Coming up on Roland Martin Unfiltered,
streaming live on the Black Start Network,
a thug, retired Kansas City, Kansas cop
arrested by the FBI for raping black women.
Folks, wait until we tell you this story.
This man has been free for a long time.
People have complained about him for years.
And finally, the FBI steps in.
Calls for the Phoenix Suns owner of the NBA to be banned for life.
The National Basketball Players Association executive director wants him gone.
PayPal has said they will
not sponsor their
name on the team's jersey
until that man is removed.
And the minority owner of the team
says it's time for him to go
as well. Lots of drama
coming out of Phoenix.
We'll be joined by Florida
Land Commissioner Nikki Freed.
She is blasting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis
for shipping migrants from that state to Martha's Vineyard.
He sent a videographer along with them.
Well, guess who was waiting for them?
Fox News.
What Republicans are doing, the governor of Texas
and now Florida, is shameful,
and frankly, it's human trafficking. Yeah, that's real. Erin Marcellala,
she's running for Attorney General of Florida. Remember, she was the first black elected
prosecutor in that state. We'll talk with her on the show as well. In addition, we've got our
Education Matters segment, which we, of course, do every single Friday. Look forward to that.
And I was in Kansas City today talking to Windsor
Barbie. She is the only black woman
and she's the only African
American, the only woman
who owns an upbeater company. They're the
ones who are building the 2.0
Robomobile. And so we'll show
you her, my interview with her as well, in our
Marketplace segment. A lot of things
we're talking about today. It is time to bring the
funk on Roland Martin Unfiltered on the Blackstar Network. Let's go. I just believe he's knowing Putting it down from sports to news to politics
With entertainment just for gigs
He's rolling
Yeah
It's Uncle Roro, yo
Yeah
It's Roland Martin
Yeah
Rolling with Roland now
Yeah
He's broke, he's fresh, he's real, the best, you know he's Roland Martel.
Now.
Martel.
Folks, a shocking story out of Kansas City, Kansas.
A longtime cop there has been terrorizing black folks in that city.
Yesterday, he was finally arrested for his heinous actions, this time by the FBI.
I'm talking about this former police detective, Roger Golubsky.
Folks, he is facing six counts of civil rights violations.
He is 69 years old, retired in 2010 after working for the Department,
for the Kansas City Police Department for 35 years.
The FBI has been investigating allegations that Golubsky, who is white,
sexually assaulted black women in the city
and exchanged drugs for information during criminal investigations.
He could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted of any of the counts.
A pretrial hearing is scheduled for October 12th.
Joining me now is Laura McDonald.
She's executive director of Moore Squared from Kansas City, Missouri.
Glad to have you on the show.
We were there in Kansas City.
This guy came up.
And let's be clear.
Was he in...
First of all, people don't understand.
They're two different Kansas cities.
Kansas City, Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri.
So he was an officer in Kansas City, Kansas, correct?
In Kansas City, Kansas, yes.
The smaller of the two cities.
Okay.
And in looking
at these stories and seeing these
allegations of him
setting people up, one
woman who came out publicly testified
that she was raped multiple
times by this guy.
And folks said, why didn't you call the
cops? And she said, because he was the
cops. Right.
So just share with folks, again, how evil this man really, really is.
Thanks for having me on the show, Mr. Martin.
Yes, Detective Roger Golubsky was with the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department for three decades. And in that time, from the 80s to 2010, when he retired,
um, he simply terrorized the Black community.
He seemed to prey upon lower income
and more vulnerable Black women,
oftentimes women who were drug addicted,
or one of the young women in the allegation
was actually a minor who was in foster care at the time
when he raped her.
Wow.
And nothing was done?
Nothing was done, Mr. M-
Not only was nothing done,
he had assigned to him at one time,
his partner in the field for many years as a detective
went on to become the police chief and continued
to deny these allegations, even though we believe that that person was one time sitting in his squad
car while one of these two victims was being raped by Golubsky inside her house. Former Chief Ziegler
was seated in the squad car in her driveway, she says. And not just with the rapes. He was setting people up.
Absolutely.
People who went to prison that he set up for crimes that they did not commit.
Absolutely. We know for a fact that Lamont McIntyre was framed by Roger Golubsky,
and he was exonerated in 2017. I was in the courtroom that wonderful day when Lamont finally
got to be free. I've known Lamont's mother for some 20 years, and she was one of his first victims,
one of Roger Golubsky's earlier victims that we know about. And he went on to frame Lamont for
a double homicide in Kansas City, Kansas, that he did things like, Mr. Martin,
he actually had three of her family members' photos in a photo lineup. So it was Lamont
and a brother and a cousin. And basically, they had no choice but to pick one of Rose McIntyre's
loved ones in the photo lineup. And then he would use
some of the women who he would coerce in the streets through drugs, like street prostitutes.
He would use them as what people call snitch witnesses to come in and testify and identify
people like Lamont in these cases. So we believe, we know of multiple men right now who are incarcerated,
who we believe that he framed in similar type situations.
Two of them, Celestra McKinney and Brian Betts, have evidentiary hearings on early October.
It's like October 4th and 5th.
And we just,
you know, pray that this helps them with their release. They've been incarcerated for
nearly two decades. Wow. Absolutely stunning. And so many folks in this community relieved
that he finally has been arrested. Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
We, you know, we celebrate on one hand.
We at More Squared, we work against mass incarceration day in and day out.
But when somebody like this has fueled the system of mass incarceration,
I've got to say it was delightful to see that man's mugshot
instead of his lovely police photo that we've been seeing for three decades in the news. Oh, Laura McDonald, we certainly appreciate it. Thanks a lot.
And we'll be watching to see what happens next in this case.
Thanks for all of your attention to Kansas City and the black community here, Mr. Martin. We
really appreciate your service to us. Thanks so much. I certainly appreciate it. Thanks very much.
Thank you. Folks, I'm going to bring my panel right now.
Matt Manning, civil rights attorney.
Also, Monique Presley, legal analyst.
Host of Make It Make Sense with Monique Presley.
Xavier Pope, host of Suit Up News, owner of the Pope Law Firm.
Glad to have all three of you here.
The thing, Matt, that jumps out with this is folks in that city,
they've been yelling, screaming for years,
this man is evil, this man needs to be arrested.
And nothing was done.
But it was the constant public pressure that kept the attention focused on the FBI,
and finally he was arrested.
Yeah, I think that's a really great point, Roland, because what
you see in these circumstances is the police policing themselves. And that's inherently a
problem, right? The fact that there were three decades of complaints against him, and then his
partner became the chief, shows you a lot of those institutional problems that people have when
they're trying to vindicate their constitutional rights and wrongful convictions
against the police,
because the police are investigating themselves.
So I'm glad that there was ultimately triumph
for the victims in this case with the indictment
and that he's gonna be held to task,
but it speaks to a larger systemic issue,
both there in Kansas City and across the country,
where police are able to close their phalanx
and make sure that their own aren't prosecuted and these instances aren't investigated.
So I'm glad that this shows that this kind of thing does happen.
And what I would hope for is that Mark Dupree's office there in Wyandotte County is going to just do a wholesale review of all of the convictions that Golubski was involved in,
because there are surely people flying under the radar who will be sitting in jail and have sat in jail for a very long time behind these kinds of heinous acts.
Monique, I have said on this show many times that the White House has failed in regards to really
giving due credit to the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. This guy was arrested on civil rights violations.
The work that Christian Clark is doing in that department is huge,
and this really jumps out in this case here.
Most people only think in terms of criminal.
They were thinking in terms of other areas,
but utilizing the civil rights statutes was a way to get this guy arrested.
Right, right. My two words were going to be Kristen Clark, and they still are.
I wouldn't couch it in that way. I don't want to start with a negative as if the White House isn't doing something, because what the White House did is appoint and get Merrick Garland in the job and get Kristen Clark in the job.
And it takes this Black woman who really, across the board, we've seen cause an entire department
of the civil, of the DOJ to pay attention to the crimes being committed against Black women that were before being
ignored. So we're seeing that happen over and over again. We saw that with what happened with
Breonna Taylor and the extent to which they dug into that department. We're seeing that happen
here. And she's not going to stop. She's causing the work to get done. So I applaud her
leadership and I applaud this administration for work that has not been done in prior administrations
for the quarter century that I've been a lawyer. So I'm thankful. Xavier, here's why I'm going to call them out. Yes, she was appointed.
But this is a perfect example of how the failure to communicate leads people to say, oh, what's not being done?
There has been a stunning number of indictments, of convictions by this DOJ. And all I'm simply saying is, if this White House
would fully embrace that and tell the story,
I dare say literally bring them to the White House podium
and talk about this here.
Because look, we talk about it,
but there's a lot of people who have no idea
what's happening with this DOJ and Civil Rights Division.
And as Ben Crump has said, arguably, this is the most active Civil Rights Division
since the days of Robert F. Kennedy in the 1960s.
Yeah, you have to be able to celebrate the wins that you have.
Yeah.
And show what's going on.
And that's why your program exists, Roland Martin.
That's why the last guest. Thank you for bringing this to the world's attention.
And so putting and showing the wins and how many things that have happened since the beginning of this administration.
And that needs to be sold to the American people, particularly to African-American communities,
who many of them have not thought that this administration has done enough to be able to address social justice issues.
Well, maybe if you be able to sell that more to the American public,
particularly the African-American public,
it would show things are actually getting done by this administration.
Yeah, and again, I just, I mean, this is a perfect example of, again, strong prosecution, not allowing these things just to continue.
And so that's absolutely, again, great news here.
And, man, I want to go back to you.
Again, we talk about this guy.
I mean, this is a walking thug.
And this reminds me of the guy in Oklahoma City who got convicted, who raped black women, who was a cop.
It's terrifying. And the fact that we're continuing to hear these stories from disparate parts of the country shows you that this is a problem institutionally.
I'm not sure if I came through earlier, but, you know, there are district attorney's offices around the country that have set up conviction integrity units for precisely these kinds of situations.
And as I was saying before, I hope Mr. Dupree's office there looks at every single conviction that was gotten by, you know,
the work of Golubsky, because there are surely people sitting in prison right now behind these kinds of acts.
To that particular point, we've seen some folks, Monique, we look at some of these Republicans and what they do.
They've been fighting this.
You saw the attorney general of Virginia dismantle their program.
The woman who became the DA in San Francisco in many ways dismantled that integrity unit.
These are needed.
And you have some of these prosecutors who believe, oh, we shouldn't be doing that.
But no.
If somebody did wrong, they should
be punished for it. But we know
for a fact that there are way too
many people who are sitting in jail right
now for crimes they did not
commit, and it is necessary
to have those units look
at those cases and study them.
And you had, you know, we had Kim Foxx who was like, yeah, we can't trust these cops.
Same thing in Maryland with Alicia Brave Boy there.
And we have these examples of progressive DAs.
Fox News calls them the Soros DAs.
But these are the folks who are going, no, double check to ensure
if the people did it, they did it. And you don't just believe these corrupt cops.
Absolutely. And when you have a police officer such as this one who now has been charged with
multiple criminal offenses that relate to conduct on the job, then it's really
an obligation at that point to do, as my colleague Manny said, and investigate all of the prior cases
because nobody just oops and uh-ohs into criminal conduct while under the color of law one time, and everything else they do
is squeaky clean. The Innocence Project, to your point, Roland, reports over 10,000 wrongfully
convicted a year. Those are disproportionately black and brown, disproportionately men,
but black and brown men. And those are the numbers for instances like we're seeing here
for times when they are coerced into convictions for fear of prosecution and for fear of time that
would be greater if they were prosecuted for other crimes. So all of these things, there's
oversight that's necessary. The federal oversight that Kristen and her team are doing is wonderful.
But I'm going to say again, because I just keep hoping that if I say it long enough, people will listen.
George Floyd Justice in Policing Act was supposed to also be a curative in that it would provide federally required oversight for actions such as these. And if we vote, y'all, in November, we can get legislation like that because we need
a real majority in the Senate and we need to hold the House to make it happen.
Xavier, this is also, again, being resolute in ensuring that there is justice and it has to
continue. And you're absolutely right. You know, who you vote for changes.
Let's be real clear. If this was a Trump DOJ, they ain't investigating cops.
Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr were very clear.
Yeah, Roland, I mean, this was something that was rolled back in terms of the Trump administration and not enforcing any consent decrees.
That was the previous Obama administration.
So this was an administration that attempted to show to its base that, hey, we're not going to do anything to harm, quote, unquote, the reputation of police officers
when we all know in African-American communities
what that reputation looks like
and the accountability the community wants to hold.
Now, we talk about the defund the police and all that.
Many African-Americans, they want to have policing.
They want to have safe policing,
and that safe policing relates to their own well-being
in the communities that they live.
Yeah, they want safe policing, and that safe policing relates to their own well-being in the communities that they live. Yeah, they want safe policing,
but they also don't want to have
thuggish cops. That is absolutely
the case. Folks, hold tight one second.
We're going to go to a break. We'll come back.
We're going to talk about, speaking of thugs,
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, what he is
doing is utterly shameful.
Sending migrants to Martha's
Vineyard.
But he sends a videographer with them to detail what's going on,
because for them, let's embarrass these liberal places.
And then Senator Ted Cruz blasts the left.
The governor of Massachusetts with Martha's Vineyard is, is a Republican. We'll talk with Florida State Official Nikki Freed next

We'll be right back. When we invest in ourselves, our glow, our vision, our vibe, we all shine.
Together, we are Black Beyond Measure.
Hatred on the streets, a horrific scene, a white nationalist rally that descended into deadly
violence white people are losing their damn lives there's an angry pro-trump mob storm to the u.s
capital we're about to see the rise of what i call white minority resistance we have seen white
folks in this country who simply cannot tolerate black folks
voting. I think what we're seeing is the inevitable result of violent denial. This is part of American
history. Every time that people of color have made progress, whether real or symbolic, there has been
what Carol Anderson at Emory University calls white rage as a backlash. This is the rise of the Proud Boys and the Boogaloo Boys.
America, there's going to be more of this.
Here's all the Proud Boys guys.
This country is getting increasingly racist
in its behaviors and its attitudes
because of the fear of white people.
The fear that they're taking our jobs,
they're taking our resources, they're taking our women.
This is white people.
When we invest in ourselves, we all shine. Together, we are black beyond measure. When you talk about blackness and what happens in black culture,
we're about covering these things that matter to us, speaking to our issues and concerns. This is a genuine people-powered movement.
There's a lot of stuff that we're not getting. You get it. And you spread the word.
We wish to plead our own cause to long have others spoken for us.
We cannot tell our own story if we can't pay for it.
This is about covering us.
Invest in black-owned media.
Your dollars matter.
We don't have to keep asking them to cover our stuff.
So please support us in what we do, folks.

We're behind $100,000. So we want to hit 2,000 people. $50 this month. Waits $100,000. We're behind $100,000.

And... Folks, if you want to see what Christianity looks like,
it is how the people in Martha's Vineyard have responded to
migrants who were flown there by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
This is the latest attempt by these so-called compassionate
conservatives, these so-called
Jesus-loving people
to own the
lives, if you will. Texas Governor
Greg Abbott has been doing that.
He has sent folks to Washington,
D.C., to New York City, to Chicago
and other places. They say, well,
they need to feel this. And these
Republicans are basking in all of this.
But what they didn't realize was how people are going to respond.
In Martha's Vineyard, they had so many volunteers
that they told people, we have enough.
They've actually been providing them with food and support.
But what DeSantis has done is heinous,
and it's actually human trafficking.
This is a video from the Miami Herald.
And if you want to understand, again, how sick and demented this man is, listen and watch this video.
Arrived last night, make it clear that they were lied to again and again.
And fraudulently induced to board.
Drive last.
Drive last night, make it clear that they were lied to again and again and fraudulently induced
to board the planes. They were told there was a surprise present for them and that there would be jobs and housing awaiting for them when they arrived
This was obviously a sadistic lie
Not only did those responsible for this stunt know that there was no housing and no employment awaiting the migrants
They also very intentionally chose not to call ahead to any single office authority on Martha's Vineyard
so that even the most basic human needs arrangements could be made.
Ensuring that no help awaited the migrants at all was the entire point.
They were provided with a cartoonishly simple map of Martha's Vineyard and the United States
and a brief brochure
containing snippets from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts website and instructions
to change their address with USCIS when they relocated.
This is especially troubling as anyone with even the most basic understanding of the immigration
proceedings knows that USCIS was not the agency with whom the migrants would have to record
their addresses and has nothing to do with their cases in any way.
It is clear that this was an intentional attempt to ensure that these migrants were removed
in absentia when they failed to change their address with the proper agency.
This was a purposeful derailment designed to prevent people from complying with federal
immigration policies.
This is problematic because the state should not be interfering with federal immigration
policy.
Before they boarded the planes, the migrants were processed by agents of the Department
of Homeland Security who listed falsified addresses on the migrants' paperwork.
Agents apparently chose random homeless shelters
all across the country, from Washington to Florida,
to list the migrants' mailing addresses,
even when told by the migrants
that they had no address in the U.S.
According to the paperwork provided to them,
the migrants are required to check in with ICE office
nearest to the fake address chosen for them by DHS or be permanently removed from the United States, with some required
to check in as early as this coming Monday.
It could not be clearer that this is an attempt to ensure that these people are ordered removed
even as they try as hard as they can to comply with the instructions provided to them.
There is no other reason to list as someone's mailing address a homeless shelter in Tacoma, Washington, when they ship him to Massachusetts.
It is sickeningly cruel, throwing obstacles in the way of people fleeing violence and oppression, some of whom walked through 10 countries in
the hopes of finding safety, it is shameful and inhuman.
Many of these victims were deprived of medical care despite clear existing injuries.
These are human beings who were deprived of basic human rights. To the people who find themselves, these wonderful people who find themselves plane wrecked on
our island, I have a message for all of them.
You are not alone.
We have your backs.
We are proud to be here for you.
And we've got you.
If the intention of those who perpetrated this horrendous
act was to create a crisis, you have failed. Their demeanor is kind, their demeanor is
grateful, and their demeanor is just that they want to be doing everything right. Their
biggest concern today is that many of them have dates to appear in San Antonio Monday
morning, Tacoma, Washington Monday
morning, Washington, D.C. Monday morning.
You tell me how that's possible.
We will be exploring all civil and criminal legal options to hold the perpetrators accountable
and to prevent this injustice from repeating itself.
Nikki Freed, she is the agriculture commissioner there in Florida.
She has sent a letter.
Sent a letter.
You're shaking your head.
I don't know where in the hell we even are in this country with these people.
She sent a letter to the Department of Justice asking them to investigate. Many others are calling on DOJ to literally pursue human trafficking
violations against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Folks, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has spent
$12 million of taxpayer funds on these ridiculous games. And Nikki, what is shameful, what is
shameful, Commissioner Freed, is that I'm looking at so-called conservative Christians,
people like Eric Erickson, gloat and make fun of this.
You have idiots.
And I'm a registered voter still in Texas.
And it shames me that Ted Cruz is one of my two United States senators.
This fool posts a tweet trying to say, oh, basically owning the libs.
He is so dumb, he didn't even realize that the governor of Massachusetts is a Republican.
And that governor has said, we're going to treat these people with dignity and respect.
These people are not Christians.
These people, if Jesus came back and we know how Jesus actually looks, they would try to deport Jesus.
Yeah.
I mean, Roland, it is just unconscionable.
I don't know where we are as Americans.
You know, this is who we are as Americans to be opening up our hearts and, you know, the beacon of freedom and light.
And these two governors, it's like they're children.
Look at me.
Look at me.
I'm not getting enough attention.
So let's, you know, send people across the country.
And so, yes, I wrote a letter to the Department of Justice asking for an investigation because this is human trafficking that the governor of Florida has paid with Florida taxpayer dollars to transport these individuals from Texas.
I think there was a stop in Florida so they can make some kind of rational, you know,
connection to money that was allocated, $12 million of Florida taxpayer dollars that was
allocated, and then send them up to Martha's Vineyard. And this is, it's not even just inhumane. This is pathetic. These two
men are using 50 individual lives to play on this game that he's having, that they're having
with the Biden administration. How about act like adults? How about act like leaders and governors and say, look, we've got a problem at the border.
Why don't we convene a convention of governors, members of Congress, people from the White House, and sit down and come up with a comprehensive immigration reform process?
This is a complete political trick and ploy that I don't even see what is the end here? What's next? And this is
just un-American. But you know what is American? What those people did in Martha's Vineyard. That
is what America looks like. And that is the beacon of freedom that we should all implicate.
Charlie Crist, who is running against Ron DeSantis for governor,
you ran against him in the Democratic primary,
he tweeted this out a few hours ago.
Because now, all of a sudden, DeSantis doesn't want to answer any questions.
And so this is the tweet.
Ron won't answer questions that we looked ourselves.
Florida paid Vertol Systems $615,000 on September 8th out of the $12 million deportation fund.
So Floridians paid $12,300 for each refugee DeSantis trafficked for his own political purposes.
Now, for the people of Florida, your state, that's literally, let me just put it in a way for my audience.
That's 612 grand he could have gave to Florida A&M University.
That's $612,000 that could have been created for scholarships for HBCU students.
Instead, he chose to spend $612,000 to ship them to Martha's Vineyard, where they're also spending money for them there.
That's what this idiot is doing.
Well, Roland, let's even take it further.
Florida has become the most unaffordable state in the nation.
We've got people who can't afford the rent that are living about to be living on the streets.
And they've held up rental assistance money. And this is where we're spending our money by doing these tricks.
And let's also on top of this. Last year, he did the same type of trick.
He spent one point six million of our taxpayer dollars and sent law enforcement and the guard out to the border.
So this is the second time that he has done this political trick. Ron, grow some and call the president of the United States
and sit down and figure this out. You were also a member of Congress. What did you do during all
of those years to talk about immigration reform? All of a sudden, this is important to you?
When we've got Floridians who can't afford to pay the rent and skyrocketing rent costs here in the state of Florida.
But instead, this is where you're taking your time.
And also, people need to know that that $12 million that was allocated was for the purposes of deporting people that were
from, that were in Florida. So I've asked for the question of one, what federal laws have been
violated, you know, as far as trafficking of these individuals. Look, you heard from that clip that
you just showed that there seems to have been a significant amount of deception and fraud of even
luring these individuals onto those planes.
And then on top of it, what Florida laws did Ron DeSantis just violate by utilizing that money, even if it was only $615 of that $12 million?
That money was not supposed to be used, first of all, it should have never been in the budget to begin with,
but should have never been utilized for deportation of individuals that weren't even in Florida.
So the amount of laws that potentially have been violated by Governor DeSantis, nobody is above the law.
And unfortunately, Ron pretends that he doesn't have to listen to the laws of Florida, doesn't have to listen to the laws of the United States.
He makes up his laws and makes up his own rules. And unfortunately, you have a Republican party here in the state of Florida that continues to prompt him up and say, you know, pat on the back,
good job, gov, keep going. And this is really where we are here in the state of Florida and in Texas.
And the fact that there are people across the nation that are cheering these two guys on,
this is the exact opposite of what and who we are as Americans.
So again, so for folks, so just so we're clear, these were not individuals who were in Florida.
Correct. These were individuals who were in Texas.
Yep. Who Abbott flew to Florida to be able to say, hey, Ron, I'm going to give you your photo op.
And then DeSantis puts a videographer on the plane to further embarrass these people.
Oh, and they give Fox News the heads up.
So when the plane lands, Fox News is waiting there to interview people. This literally is a television show for Fox News and for the right.
But, Roland, let's also not forget this, too. Three weeks ago, our lieutenant governor made similar comments about busing Cuban refugees from Florida up to Delaware and made a comment
that it was, you know,
obviously we know that President Biden's home state.
So, again, this is a show for them.
This is how they get their clicks and how they get onto Fox News
and how they stand strong.
And they find it funny.
They think this is amusing.
This is a game to them when the reality is that these individuals that were flown, from my understanding, are from Venezuela, that are trying to flee an oppressive regime.
The Cubans that were coming, you know, here in the state of Florida, that were coming from, again, a communist regime that is trying to look for political asylum.
These are who we're talking about.
The fiber of what makes Florida Florida is that so many of these individuals from Colombia,
from Venezuela, from Cuba have come and fleed those oppressive regimes to United States and
specifically into the state of Florida. So what he is doing is going to be a counter
intuitive to what he hopes as the
end result, that you're going to find Floridians that are just going to say this is enough is
enough. We are tired of the games, Ron DeSantis. We are tired of the show that you are putting on
and we're going to vote you out of office. Last question for you. You talked about
these are Venezuelans in the last In the presidential election, Democrats lost big
because Venezuelans in Florida,
Cubans and others,
they went for Trump.
Is your party ready
to target folks by saying,
hey, all of you Venezuelans
who voted for Trump
and y'all keep walking around
with your MAGA hats,
this is what these people think
of individuals from your country.
Y'all should never support these people.
Yes, and I've been saying it for three years.
I was the first one who called Ron DeSantis a dictator
for the things that he's been doing in our state,
taking away people's rights to vote,
taking away freedoms,
making it harder to have a living wage here in the state of Florida,
banning books.
I mean, the list goes on and on.
And stunts like this continue to unfortunately prove my original point correct.
And what we have been saying to a lot of our Hispanic community, especially those from the Latin Americas,
from the diaspora community in Florida that have been leaving their countries for generations for political asylum here in the
United States and specifically in Florida, is these guys are not taking care of you. They don't care
about you. They're using you consistently as a political stunt and are utilizing you for one
purpose, and that's to gain power. And you have the power to stop it. Indeed. Commissioner Nikki
Freed, we certainly appreciate you joining us. Thanks a lot.
Thank you.
Let's go to my legal panel.
I'll start with you, Monique.
We've heard a lot of legal analysts say that there's strong grounds by promising these
people different things, frankly, you know, duping them that human rights charges or human trafficking charges could be filed against DeSantis or Abbott.
You kick this started off with you. Your thoughts on this. Is that doable? Is it possible?
You're muted. You're muted. You muted yourself.
I apologize. Unfortunately, no, I don't think that this meets the rigors of the human trafficking statute. I've looked under Homeland Security, under Department of State, refreshed myself on what the legislation calls for. That's why even your last guest, Commissioner Freed, when she wrote her letter,
she called it political human trafficking, which is not what the statute requires. The statute,
it is trafficking for sure. We know that part. And even if there's fraud or deceptiveness, which it seems there was, it's for the purposes
of forced labor or for sex acts is the way those statutes run. That doesn't mean, though,
that this wasn't maybe kidnapping or that there wasn't fraudulent manner of use of funds by
the governors from the various states, especially DeSantis, in the way that the funds were used.
It doesn't mean that there haven't been other violations of their rights. The issue,
unfortunately, is what rights they have and don't have as migrants as opposed to as citizens.
And they ought to have rights as humans. But it is it's a tricky, hard sell. That's why everybody
is saying, you know, political human trafficking.
Okay.
Human trafficking for purposes of politics.
But there's no such provision under the law currently for reasons of trafficking other than sex or labor.
So, Matt, fine.
If it's not human trafficking, is it kidnapping?
It might be kidnapping if you look at it from a criminal standpoint, but I actually think there
might be something under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bans discrimination against people's
national origin. And I think it's pretty clear that if they understand that the migrants are
going to have forthcoming court dates and they ship them across the country where they're unable
to make those court dates, especially in a systemic way, there may be some meat on that bone. So I think
there are some novel legal ways to approach it. I think Monique is a thousand percent right.
I don't think the governors did this without probably vetting their potential legal issues.
And frankly, they didn't think it was human trafficking, which is why they engaged in it.
But the primary thing here is this is obviously a campaign expenditure by both Greg
Abbott and Ron DeSantis. And that is really, I think, the biggest problem, because both of them
are making a mad dash to the seventh circle to hell to see exactly how bad they can be and get
elected by their Republican bases across the country. So I think if you're looking at it as,
you know, an interesting legal way to approach it, I think if you're looking at it as an interesting legal
way to approach it, I think it might be under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, because migrants do have
civil rights as it relates to discrimination. Xavier?
Yeah, I think it's kidnapping. The trafficking element definitely is a difficult one to prove
because of the forced labor component. But these migrants were told one thing, this Perla woman that was hired, they basically said you're going to get these different benefits.
And that inducement caused them to go someplace.
And then they went on the other side not knowing where they were going or where they were free to get off the plane and how they were treated.
And so I think that's the avenue from a criminal aspect
of what it looks like.
Also, I agree that there may be some civil rights component as well.
I think this should be investigated to the fullest extent.
I think that Republicans should not be used to push this through
and move on to the next stunt.
They need to be held accountable for it and be held accountable for it now.
Here's something that I thought was very interesting,
and the JFK Library put this out now. Here's something that I thought was very interesting and the JFK
Library put this out
yesterday. Go to my iPad, please.
This was a tweet here
where they put out, they said,
To embarrass northern liberals and humiliate
black people, southern white
citizens councils started
their so-called reverse
freedom rides, giving black
people one-way tickets to northern cities
with false promises of jobs, housing, and better lives.
This is the newspaper article they actually posted.
And this morning, you see right here, this thing got 23,000 retweets, 48,000 likes. People who had no idea didn't understand this history, Monique.
And I saw some folk earlier, some black folks, when it was a white woman, she commented,
and the person was like, well, you know, it's disrespectful to black people to compare what's happened to the migrants to them.
And I had to weigh in.
I said, first of all, nonsense.
I said, there are parallels to what is happening here.
Yes, in our case, we were already citizens of the country.
But the reality is, whether you're talking to citizens or whether you're talking to people who are migrants,
it is still shameful behavior that these Republicans are engaging in. And I was glad the JFK library put that out
because people had no clue that these things had happened to black folks during Jim Crow. Monique?
Absolutely. And it shows, one, there's no new tricks. Right. The devil has the same old stuff and they regurgitate it and they put it in a little bit of a different light and they try it again.
And they are doing that with these people. And we, you know, shame on some of us sometimes because we've had it hard.
We don't want to admit the hardness of anybody else. We don't want it to be compared.
It doesn't have to be compared for us to say that it's terrible. But then also, that was done by groups that were private citizens informing councils.
To me, this is actually worse than what was done, because these are governors acting under the color
of state law. This is law enforcement. And they have these people's bodies. You know, I mean, they are responsible for them.
And, I mean, Roland, you know, from Texas on buses all the way to in front of the VP's house,
I mean, that's hours and hours of travel, flying.
They said they didn't feed them from 6 in the morning when they left until after they got to Martha's Vineyard.
All of the fraudulent behavior, all of the false promises that were given,
I'm sure that there are many claims of action. And what I was most impressed by
was that lawyer in Martha's Vineyard. I appreciate nothing more than when I see people step up and
use their education and use their expertise for good.
And I am thankful to see that there are people on the ground doing just that.
And, you know, and again, this is history does repeat itself, Matt.
And that's what we see here. And what these folks are doing, they are showing you who they are. Believe them. They're nothing else. Believe who they are. They are despicable.
These Republicans today, these MAGA Republicans, are despicable.
They're despicable.
And what's equally despicable is that there is a large contingent of people across the country who are applauding this.
I mean, to your point earlier, the fact that they fed this to Fox News before they engaged in it to try to get points. I think the way you said it was brilliant.
Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis are both seeking the White House, and they're both doing everything
they can to be in front of that base saying, hey, I'm the one who's really protecting your rights
and trying to take us back to the America you believe you are entitled to. And what they're
doing is engaging in this kind of behavior and leveraging all of the tools of the media to make sure that they get credit for it.
It is absolutely despicable and it is completely incongruent with what they spew with their morals and values and all the stuff that we know is not true.
But when they talk about the Christianity and the various moral codes that allegedly govern them, this is completely, uh, incongruent with that.
Um, and-and-and that's it here.
And, you know, people have heard me say this,
uh, Xavier, uh, and look, I got no problem.
I am, in my life, I voted for Republicans,
for Democrats, for Independents,
nonpartisan racesists in local,
in city, county,
state, federal races.
These people
must all be defeated.
If you
are a
Republican and you
stand with Donald Trump
and you stand with MAGA
and you stand with election deniers,
every
single one on every
level must be kicked
out of office. There are
no exceptions.
Yeah, and this was
propaganda too, Roland.
Using the media to be able to
advance this, and also
Republicans have shown that they're willing to,
we've talked about the criminality element of it,
to flout the law, to blur what's legal and what's not legal.
So I've tweeted this before, that it's law and order,
except our law and our order.
And so they're willing to disobey any protocol,
any system
of decency,
respecting the laws
and the personhood of the United
States to be able to
put people, these are
real people rolling with hearts
and lungs. These aren't
just animals. They treated them
like animals. And the fact that we
have over 75 million people in this country that are flat out racist, that they can play this too,
speaks to the individuals in this country just as much as it says about Abbott and as well as
the Senses. Indeed, indeed. And they are who they are, and folks, they are not going to change.
It was Adam Serr on The Atlantic when he coined the phrase,
cruelty is the point.
And that's who these people are.
Go on to a break.
We come back.
We'll talk with the sister who wants to become the next Attorney General of Florida.

Hey, I'm Antonique Smith.
What up? Lana Well, and you are watching
Roland Martin Unfiltered.
Folks, uh, we have seen the importance
of having someone as the state attorney general in Minnesota.
Keith Ellison took charge of the prosecution of George Floyd.
We see Aaron Ford.
He is attorney general in Nevada.
You have Kwame Raul, who's attorney general there in Illinois.
But it doesn't mean that you have a black attorney general that they're going to do what's right.
You have that fool Cameron, Daniel Cameron in Kentucky,
who led a shoddy investigation in the death of Breonna Taylor.
And it was the Department of Justice who had to come in and clean it up because he was so awful and pathetic.
And now that joke of a man is running for governor. Please, Kentucky,
do not elect that fool as your next governor. In Florida, my next guest, she garnered lots
of attention when she became the first black state prosecutor. But when she came out and said
she was not going to prosecute murder cases, the governor moved against her. She was targeted. She
was threatened. Now she is running
for attorney general. I'm going to say y'all are joining us right now. I'm glad to have you back
on the show. You won the Democratic primary. So look, you were actually running for Congress,
but then you switched. Why did you say, you know what, I should be the next attorney general?
So it's a couple of things. First of all, thanks for having me on your show. I really appreciate you sharing this.
You know, it's important for us to recognize that in Florida, they decimated two majority
minority congressional districts. And where I live, I was in one of those districts. So as a
result of that, I said, OK, I won't be in that district, but then I'm going to run statewide.
I looked at all the attacks that were happening in the legislature, and our attorney general was standing saying nothing. And you can't tell whether it was
incompetence or whether it's corruption, but either one, it disqualifies her from the position.
And we need someone who has the courage, the backbone, the intelligence, and the ability
to stand up to the powers and let the people get the representation and advocacy that they need. And when we talk about, again, the role of the AGs,
we see how Republicans are trying to rig elections by taking over two critical positions,
Attorney General and Secretary of State.
Yeah, that's all part of the game.
I mean, look what's happening in Florida right now.
If the governor can get the attorney general to side with him, to be silent in violations
of the law, violations of our constitutional rights, that's her job.
That's the responsibility of the attorney general.
So if the governor can get those people to do his bidding, he can cut the law, he can
totally eliminate the system, move forward and get his agenda that is in
violation of the people's rights, he can move that straight to the top. And that's not the
game that we should be playing. It is time out for politics. People are dying. People can't
afford to live. People don't have the safety that they deserve. And if we don't have a person
advocating for us and playing games with the law and setting, allowing the law
to work for us, then we're all in trouble. One of the things that jumps out here is that, look,
Democrats have been woeful statewide in Florida. You've got Congresswoman Val Demings, who is
running for the United States Senate. You've got former Congressman Charlie Chris, former governor, who is running on the Democratic side
to be the governor against DeSantis.
What is the Democratic Party in Florida doing
that has been, frankly, decimated
and a lot of self-inflicted wounds?
What are they doing to galvanize this state?
Because when you look at the most populous counties,
your blue counties,
when you had Gillumum who ran for governor,
I mean, Broward County and Miami-Dade, the turnout numbers were horrible.
And so what is your strategy to really drive black turnout, to drive Latino turnout,
but to really get Democrats and progressives in Florida focused and voting and not being run over like a freight train by these MAGA folks?
You know, I think that the party is going to do what the party is going to do.
So it's going to take candidates like me who are unafraid to be Democratic.
You know, too many times Democrats try to be better Republicans.
We try to be cold and callous and cruel instead of understanding that our value is in caring about people.
Our value is in our diversity. And that's what I stand for.
So it's the authenticity that I bring to the ticket that I am creating a level of energy and desire for people to come out.
We had, you know, in 2018, the passage of Amendment 4, which restored the voting rights to formerly incarcerated people.
As a result of that,
we have at least 192,000 of those who are ready to vote. They're registered, fines paid off,
and these are the people that we're going after. We're going to increase the vote.
In addition to that, we have a lot of angry women across the state of Florida who are frustrated
about being considered a half-human being, who are concerned about losing their privacy
rights, their bodily autonomy. That's the job of the attorney general. You know, in
the state of Florida, we have a constitutional provision that specifically identifies our
right to privacy. And unfortunately, she's acting like it doesn't exist, that it's not
a violation of the Constitution. Our voting rights, you know, you asked me about the congressional
district. When those districts were changed and the governor submitted his desired map, she should have said,
this is unconstitutional based upon the Florida Constitution. So if you don't have someone who
has energy, we're going to continue to do what we've been doing and continue to get what we got.
But what I bring is something different. It is genuine, it's authentic, and we're going to win
this race. Questions from our panel. Xavier, I'll is something different. It is genuine, it's authentic, and we're going to win this race.
Questions from our panel. Xavier, I'll start with you.
The last election in the state, the story was about how the Latino vote in that state is different than other states? And how the messaging gets turned around in that state to change the tide
and how Latinos vote in that state, to be able to increase the messaging around how the state
is being run so they can actually vote for their interests instead of against them?
So that's a really good question. And that's what we don't do a good job at. But I think we're beginning to master it with my campaign. You know, my husband's Afro-Latina. His family's from Cuban. And their mission and their desires
and their vision for justice and their histories
are very different from the countries
and islands that they come.
So we have to be able to tailor a message,
not just to the large spectrums of Latino,
but all the individual nuances.
And that takes time, energy, money, focus,
and certainly a heart for the people.
Matt.
Good evening.
Let me first say my former boss was a compatriot of yours on FJP.
So I learned about the good work you were doing in Florida, and I appreciate it.
And I appreciate your fearlessness as it relates to the death penalty.
So kind of what I wanted to ask you is, you know, when you get to that position, what are your plans on galvanizing law enforcement?
Because I would imagine in Florida, there are a lot of law enforcement groups that are, you know,
countering you saying she won't seek the death penalty. Is she a real prosecutor? And I know
that you are a progressive prosecutor and one of the strongest in the nation. So kind of what is
your approach in that respect? I think it's about leading by example. You know, too often when people
are running for offices to lead, we ask how they're going to, you know, get people to agree with them.
I don't see DeSantis getting people to agree with them. Our current attorney general is not getting people to agree with them.
They show up and they show up as the boss of the they show up as the boss of themselves, but also letting the people be the boss and working for the people, not working for law enforcement. I keep having to remind people that, you know, the attorney general is the top cop.
That's the top law enforcement officer of the state who works for the people, not other law
enforcement. So it is about addressing the culture of law enforcement to be one of service to the
people instead of lording over people, instead of, you know, thinking that mass incarceration
of black, brown, and poor people
is the way that we get to public safety.
It is about changing the culture from the top down
and allowing them to find a new way
instead of me trying to figure out
how to assimilate with them.
Monique?
Thank you so much for all the work that you do.
What I find and am most upset about
is that we see Black women,
especially prosecutors, progressive ones in this nation, attacked from the right,
but also from the left and the middle, and many times by our own people. What is it that we can
do? I never prosecuted, was always on the
defense side or working for the government, but constantly say, we need you on this wall.
What can we do to encourage, first in the community at large, an understanding of the
necessity of the work of prosecutors and why we need people of
conscience in the role, and also to encourage young want-to-be lawyers coming behind us or
ones that are in law school and making that decision to choose it as a profession.
You know, thank you for your question and for acknowledging it. Yeah, there's certain attacks.
The amount of death threats and comments that I've received, you know, it just, sadly, it comes with the turf.
Now, what can be done?
We have to remember that it is 2022.
We did not get here overnight.
It didn't take 10 years for us to get here.
This was a process of oppression.
This was years and years following slavery, following lynchings, following, you know,
even through the civil rights movement. I mean, for me, I'm 47. It's in 2017, I was the first
black state attorney in Florida. So making history isn't really, you know, anything if you're not
going to create a historical movement. But that movement requires patience. And that doesn't mean
that we're patient with people dying and patient with injustices. I mean, patience in allowing create a historical movement. But that movement requires patience. And that doesn't mean that
we're patient with people dying and patient with injustices. I mean, patience in allowing
the work that is being done to begin to trickle through the communities and for it to happen.
I wish it could happen overnight that we could stop police shootings. I wish that it could happen
that we would be able to deal with this issue of mass incarceration. But we have to start with putting us there,
allowing us to create a different type of culture
and implement policies.
We have to have room to adjust
because nothing is gonna be perfect coming in.
But it is about understanding
that we are in the middle of a process.
People often identify justice by the outcome.
Justice is also the process.
And if we are going to be given the
room to pursue justice, we also have to have room to go through that process to ultimately reach it.
All right, then. So if folks want more information on your campaign, where do they go?
My website is AramisAyalaFL.com. That's A-R-A-M-I-S-A-Y-A-L-A-F-L for Florida dot com.
You can also see me on Twitter at AramisayalaFL on Facebook and on Instagram.
And hopefully you will be seeing me in that office because right now we don't have an attorney general who even answer to her participation in this whole issue with this human trafficking.
All right. Aramisayala, it's really appreciated. Thanks a lot.
Thank you so much. I appreciate it. All right, folks.
When we come back, we'll talk about

I remember being with The View when they said,
we want to extend your contract.
And I knew God said, it's time to move.
It's time to go.
And everybody was saying, Cher, you got a great job.
You're making all of this money. And I said, no, it's time.
And they said, you ain't going to be able to.
You've been away from Hollywood.
And I said, it's time to go.
And when I didn't, that's when I realized I was about to go
through this divorce.
And I was going to need it.
It was going to be expensive.
It was going to be a lot.
And I said, I'm going to stay.
I said, I'm going to stay for a couple of years.
Make this money.
See, go ahead.
I'm going to make this money.
And then I'll get out lower.
So it was a compromise. I'm going to do what you say, but I'm going to do this money and then I'll get out lower. So I'm going to do a compromise.
I'm going to do what you say, but I'm going to do it on
my thing. And he went, really?
He went, really. And you know when he went, really?
They said that we were heavy in
contract negotiations.
And they came, my manager called. She said,
they're not going to renew your contract.
And I went, hey, wait, what?
Just yesterday, they was offering
me more money. She said, they just decided not to renew your contract.
And I remember sitting in front of the mirror at the view.
And I went, what happened?
And it was very clear.
God said, I told you it was time to go. when we invest in ourselves we're investing in what's next for all of us growing creating

Virginia since September 14th.
The 16-year-old is 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighs 149 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
Mikel has piercings in his left ear and nose.
He was last seen wearing a black hoodie with a teddy bear on the front and black jeans.
Anyone with information about Mikel West should call the Henrico County Virginia Police Department at 804-501-5000.
Folks, earlier this week, Adam Silver,
the commissioner of the NBA announced the one year suspension
of the owner of the Phoenix Suns and a $10 million dollar fine.
Now he did so as a result of an NBA investigation that detailed racist comments
made by the owner, as well as sexual comments made by him. He's on the team for 18 years.
Richard Sarver is the owner there, and it has led to a lot of drama. He initially balked at it, but he then, of course, accepted the punishment.
Now, people have been highly critical of Adam Silver, saying that he should have done more,
but the reality is, remember, Adam Silver is an employee of the NBA. He works for the owners. The owners control what's going on. Well, what this has done is
this has led to, as I
said, lots of
dissension. The
commissioner, first of all, several players
have actually commented on this.
And yesterday
one of the minority owners of the
Phoenix Suns wrote an open letter
calling on Sauber to
step down, saying he simply cannot
lead the team as a result of this investigation. Well, PayPal, they actually have a patch that
goes on the team's uniform. PayPal CEO announced today that as long as Sarver is the owner, they are suspending their partnership with the Phoenix Sun.
Now the NBA Players Association executive director, she's saying Sarver should be suspended for life.
Tamika Tremaglio is the new executive director of the NBA Players Association.
She gave an interview today where she talked about this,
and this is the ESPN story right here where she said,
we are absolutely calling for a lifetime ban.
We do not want him to be in a position where he is managing
or engaging with individuals who are engaging with our players
or the players themselves.
We are absolutely clear from the findings that are in the report that we do not want
him in that position.
She confirmed that she was speaking on behalf of players with her remarks and different
players, LeBron James, Chris Paul, who plays for the Phoenix Suns, a former president of
the Players Association, expressing their disappointment with the punishment by NBA
Commissioner Adam Silver.
It is our players' desire that while we understand that there has been a thorough investigation
and while we're very pleased that the NBA was able to follow through on that
because that's clearly something that we want to see happen,
we also want to make it very clear that we do not want him to be back in a position
where he will be impacting our players and those who serve our players on a daily basis.
The NBA confirmed allegations of abuse in the workplace, making sexual suggestive comments,
using the N-word in repeating stories that were told to him.
It was a 10-month investigation that came after ESPN did a deep dive into these allegations of racism
and sexism with the Phoenix Suns
during the 17 years
Solvers has served as owner
of the team. I'm going to bring my panel
here. The thing here, Matt,
that is hard for
people to understand. You take the NFL.
People think, Roger Goodell's commissioner
means nothing. He works for 32
owners. Adam Silver is the commissioner of the NBA.
He's an employee.
And so during the news conference, Adam Silver made a comment
that people were blasting him, but he was right.
He said, folks, the actions of an employee of an NBA team
are treated differently than that of an owner
because the owners own the league.
So it's not like there's another entity out here that's bigger than the owners.
The only thing bigger than one owner are the other 30 owners.
And so what Silver said, he said that the reason the difference between the former owner of the Clippers
getting thrown
out and banned for life is
because he expressly
had racial animus
and racial hatred.
And so
Silver sort of threaded the needle
when it came to this guy here saying
there's a difference between the two, but
people have to understand, the only people who can oust an NBA owner
are fellow NBA owners, Matt.
Yeah, that's what I was going to say.
I mean, I don't know all of the legalities of the NBA
or any professional sports organization or league, rather.
But the thing that seems to me would be the first place to start
would be the bylaws or whatever governing documents that they have. And to your point, the other 31 owners would
be the ones on whom the onus would fall to oust him. So, you know, the circumstances under which
that happens and how that happens, particularly as it relates to something that's frankly a private
property, right, as it relates to the team or your ownership in the team, I don't really know
how that works.
The larger issue, though, is, you know, if you are a part of a team and you're one of the other owners, this has a huge effect on your brand, obviously. And, you know, I know that at least
one of the minority owners in terms of ownership, who I think is also what would be considered a
racial minority, has said, look, I don't want this guy to be a part of the team. How you oust someone as it relates to their private property rights, I frankly don't know.
But that seems to me to really be the question is, what are these other owners doing? And,
you know, what do you do in a circumstance like this where you have very credible evidence?
Because they investigated, in their investigation, I think they spoke to something like 70 employees
or people with the Sons organization, and there's far more than smoke.
There's a lot of fire there.
So how do you make that an actionable thing and get him out?
I'm not sure.
And to that particular point here, that particular minority owner, Monique, is Jam Najafi, a Phoenix-based private equity investor, he released an open letter.
Go to my iPad, folks.
He released an open letter to the Suns employees and players
denouncing his conduct and calling on Sauver to resign
as the managing partner of the team.
This is what he said in his letter.
I cannot, in good judgment, sit back and allow our children
and future generations of fans to think that this behavior
is tolerated because of wealth and privilege.
Therefore, in accordance with my commitment to helping eradicate
any form of racism, sexism, and bias,
as vice chairman of the Phoenix Suns,
I am calling for the resignation of Robert Sarver.
While I have no interest in becoming the managing partner,
I will work tirelessly to ensure that the next team steward
treats all stakeholders with dignity, professionalism, and respect.
I say that only the owners can fire him.
I'll add a caveat to that, Monique.
Sponsors can also apply the pressure.
Enough sponsors say, enough sponsors say,
we ain't spending money.
And I'm talking about, and people have to understand,
there are sponsors who directly support the teams.
But then you have league-wide sponsors.
If enough, PayPal's already come out.
If all of a sudden, over the next two, three, four, five days,
more sponsors start pulling money, homie's gone.
Yeah, and I agree with everything Councilor Manning said.
Matt, you threw me a little bit when you said, very rightly so,
that a team is like personal property because, unfortunately,
I think that's the way the owners view the athletes that play on the teams. But in everything that you said at the beginning, Roland, when you talked about PayPal
not wanting their logo to be shown, that is the avenue. It's the same thing that Attorney Crump
says about the way he handles these wrongful death cases. it has to become unprofitable to continue. That is the only
surefire way that an owner will save himself or herself by stepping down and removing because
too much money is being lost. But PayPal can not just do it for that team. Nike could do it
whenever that team goes and plays another team.
Coca-Cola can do it.
It can become league-wide
such that that one team
is, you know, just like
an albatross around the net
that nobody even wants to
have in their house, nobody wants
to play against because it starts costing
the entire league money.
The owners will take issue with that.
And Sarver will take issue with that.
He doesn't own the team for yucks and giggles.
He owns it to make money.
Xavier, this is from the story as well.
The league's investigation found that Sarver used the N-word at least five times
when relaying statements from black people
to have demeaned and bullied female employees
and to have made inappropriate physical contact with male employees.
When we say banned, he literally cannot be at the facility.
He cannot attend any games.
He cannot represent the Phoenix Suns as an NBA
governor. That's what they now call them.
They now change their name. They don't call them owners.
They call them governors.
And he cannot have
any contact whatsoever.
But you're seeing the pressure
being applied. And
keep in mind,
what happened with the
LA Clippers, when their racist owner, Donald Sterling, when he was kicked out, it really was the players driving that.
Adam Silver saw what was happening.
And they were in the middle of the playoffs.
The players were moving forward.
But based, a revolt was about to happen. If Adam Silver did not move against
Donald Sterling the way
he did, you literally
could have had players
saying, we're not
showing up for playoff games.
And so when he, when
the announcement was made, a lot of people
thought he was going to do
what he did with
Sarver.
Year suspension.
Folks were shocked that he went all the way and said no.
He was forced to sell the team and was barred from ever owning a team.
And Donald Sterling cannot step foot in any NBA arena as a result.
I think what you're going to see here, don't be surprised, Xavier, if you see this thing pick up.
For Tamika to be that aggressive as executive director
of the NBA Players Association,
I think that's going to be the next wave.
That combined with sponsors pulling money,
Sarver's going to have to, he's going to have to read
the writing on the wall and realize
he is in no position to fight it.
Donald Sterling is in crime right now, Roland, by the way.
He walked away with over $2 billion.
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
And the second thing is, remember,
what turned the tide in that Sterling situation
was that there was recording
so that you could hear the ugliness of Donald Sterling.
And there were also rumors about how he treated players,
and that was witnessed by other players.
And so in this situation, you showed the graphic of what happened.
To the average fan, okay, a couple of blurbs about how he treated people
isn't necessarily enough to move the needle.
And I think if there was some sort of recording, some sort of video
about how ugly his actions were, maybe some outpouring of lawsuits
where there was some sort of discovery
that we find out a little bit more about this.
There would be something, but there isn't something there.
And even though his behavior might have been worse
than Sterling himself, but we also roll in,
this is 2013, that was a different environment
in this country.
We had President Obama, black president in office. We are living in a MAGA-inspired country right now where people
are being encouraged to be racist, to be bigoted, to be sexist. And so people may even look at this,
oh, yeah, the NBA went too far. I mean, the black athletes, they spoke up and now he's out of the
sport. This is going too far. This is cancel culture. So there's this element that's lurking there.
If this was 2013, maybe Roberts Harbor wouldn't be owner of the Suns anymore,
but we're living in a different political reality right now.
Well, we'll see what happens next.
All right, y'all.
Got to go to break.
We come back.
I was in Kansas City today for the grand opening of Sterling Luxury Auto.
They are the folks who are building our new sprinter,
Windsor Barber.
She is the only black owner of an upfitter in America,
the only woman owner.
And so we'll hear from her about that next
in our Marketplace segment right here
on Roller Martin Unfiltered.
Don't forget, download the app, y'all.
All of our content's on there.
This show, Faraji's Daily Show,
Deborah Owens' Weekly Show,
Greg Carr's Weekly Show,
Stephanie Humphrey's Weekly Show,
Rollin' with Roland,
Jackie Hood Martin's Weekly Show.
And so all that's on the show.
Right now we got in development another daily show.
We got a fitness show, a cooking show. Right now, we got in development another daily show. We got a fitness show,
a cooking show,
so we're adding pieces, slowly
but surely. And also, I got some great
news today. We're moving with
this close to making a major announcement
on the first
carrier of our 24-hour
fast streaming channel.
Can't wait to tell you about it.
But you got to get that app, folks.
Let's get those downloads up.
Apple phone, Android phone, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox One, Samsung Smart TV.
And, of course, please support us.
Trust me, your dollars make it possible.
Our OTT app costs $160,000 a year to launch this streaming channel, folks.
I'm telling you right now, the reason I'm telling you,
we need 2,000 people who give 50 bucks this month
so we can raise 100,000 this month and next month,
November and December, because the streaming channel
is going to cost about $150,000 as well.
We're building this thing, but it takes money to do so. We've got
staff we want to hire, additional producers,
additional hosts, all that sort
of stuff. And so we're out here fighting
for the ad dollars. Y'all see me calling
political campaigns out, the reproductive rights community,
the climate community,
all of the rest of these people, so we get our fair
share because this is how you build media.
Media does not exist without
money. So all the people out there who run their mouths,
talking, oh man, you sitting here begging
the white folks for money, guess what?
In the up fronts, Disney got $9 billion.
Nine.
Comcast got $7 billion.
Warner Discovery got about $6 billion.
Yeah.
$322 billion is spent every year on advertising and media.
Black-owned media gets.5 to 1%.
So now y'all understand why I've been calling out companies
who have not been supportive of this show,
of our network, and black-owned media.
That's how you actually build, folks.
And so please, join our Marina Funk fan club.

Next on A Balanced Life with me, Dr. Jackie,
the great resignation is upon us.
Yes, it's real.
People young and old are evaluating their lives and making some determinations whether to stay or to go.
But before you take the leap, you need to examine your motives and make a plan.
It's not so much about doing this thing or starting this business or, you know, leaving where you are to do something different.
It's about getting in touch with you.
How to make change while also keeping balance.
Here on the next A Balanced Life with me, Dr. Jackie, on Black Star Network.
When we invest in ourselves, we all shine.
Together, we are Black beyond measure.
Hi, I'm Vivian Green. Hi, I'm Wendell Pierce,
actor and author of The Wind
in the Reeds. Hey, yo, peace world. What's going
on? It's the love king of R&B, Raheem Devon,
and you're watching Roland Martin,
Unfiltered. Let us pray.
I'm glad we come this morning.
Thank you for your grace, mercy, and loving kindness.
We come thanking you for Sterling's luxury.
And, Lord, thank you for all of the things that they're going to be doing,
all the automobiles that we've fixed.
Now, Lord, I pray for the prosperity and the longevity of the relationship
with all those that they are coming in contact with.
Bless those that have these nice roads and let them drive down the road safely.
In Jesus' name, amen.
Amen.
Amen.
Amen.
Amen.
Amen.
All right.
Everybody, I just want to thank you all for coming out this morning.
To all of our friends, family, vendors, our customers who have come in and
gotten their vans made here at Sterling, thank you.
The team, my tribe, Jimmy, Braxton, Denny, our Mercedes guys,
Rich Groves put this together for us real quick from over at the council so we can
have something official to say we are open now and we are part of North Kansas City. Let's get the crowd. Get it, girls. One, two, three.
Oprah!
All right.
Okay.
All right, everybody, come on in.
Folks, that was today in North Kansas City.
Windsor Barbara, right next to her, was her daughter Amber.
They cut the ribbon there. And then the barber right next to her was her daughter Amber.
They cut the ribbon there.
And so, Sterling Luxury, with today's opening,
Windsor is the only African-American upfitter in the
country and the only woman upfitter in the country.
And we talk about upfitters.
What we're talking about is when you look at our sprinter,
when you look at in terms of what we were able
to do in terms of how
it's a shell, but all the different
features that are being added to it. Well, she's
the only one. And
they are. And so it's interesting.
We had gotten the sprinter in December
2020. And
Winstead called me
for something else dealing with her
daughter. Her daughter's been doing stuff in media.
She's also an actress.
She's also a choreographer.
And while we were talking, I mentioned something about the Sprinter,
and Windsor said, Roland, you know, we're the only ones.
And I was like, I had no idea.
Y'all, I've known Windsor for years, more than 20-plus years,
when I lived in Dallas.
And she took over this business, and we began to talk.
And so we were talking about literally, okay, what happens if I get a second one?
And then, of course, when we had the accident coming out of Essence,
then we began to communicate.
So her company, and again, I tell you all the time how we take advantage, how we take your dollars and how we recirculate them.
Your dollars, they are building our next sprinter.
And so a black-owned company is building our new sprinter.
I met with her, the Mercedes team, today.
Hopefully we will have it in six to eight weeks.
It will be far more special than what we had before.
This was actually one of the vans they did.
There's a fan there at Kansas City.
They wanted a customized Kansas City Chiefs van.
And so they had it outside there today.
And so it was great to be there, to be with her and the folks at Mercedes as they announced,
again, the opening of her company.
And so had an opportunity just to chat with her.
When it was all over, just about, again, this exciting venture, here's my conversation with
Windsor Barney.
Hi, Windsor.
So we're here at what is your shop, Sterling Luxury.
Tell us about it and the history you're making.
Well, Roland, this is Sterling Luxury Coaches, and we are making history today.
And I'm so excited to have you here with me.
This is the only black-owned and woman-owned final stage automotive manufacturer in the United States of America.
And we have been so fortunate, so blessed to open up here today.
We just had the ribbon cutting, had Roland here.
And guys, we are working on Roro Mobile 2 here.
Roland has been working with us so we can do the build.
And we're going to jazz it up a little bit and put some new touches on it.
And he'll be rolling in a new row pretty soon
So you'll be looking for our work with rolling on the out there on the road somewhere near you at an event near you
So y'all do a lot of stuff for professional athletes also for universities and also just for individuals who are traveling on the road
Yes, we do Roland. We do we have done several of NBA players. Thaddeus Young just got one done.
Oladipo has gotten his done. This shop has also done Tyrese's and Vin Diesel's and Ludacris's.
So we do, and we add Roland Martin to that list now. But we do a lot of executives. A lot of the
executives have gotten the mobiles so that they can now travel for their business meetings. Some
of them use them right in their own cities, just when they want to go somewhere and they don't want to
necessarily get out. Some of the municipalities, the elected officials, municipalities get them,
say, for instance, building permits. You know, they need to go out on the job site.
It helps them move faster, more efficiently, and they're effectively moving. So we're doing everything, mobility, sports teams.
We've got the Denison University van here, just finished University of Missouri,
University of Virginia, Virginia Tech.
All those vans are already out there on the road.
We just shipped out University of Virginia a few weeks ago and the University of Missouri.
So if you've got a sports team, my HBCUs,
if you're trying to get your basketball teams, your golf teams,
your tennis teams, gymnastics fests, you need to get one,
and then your teams are traveling safely,
and they're getting from point A to point B,
and they do it comfortably.
This used to be, of course, for high-income folks,
but COVID changed a lot because a lot of people, and it really blew up this business and the RV business because people didn't have to worry about being in airports and they would stand safe.
Right, and we're also doing, Roland, we also do financing through Regions Bank. So if you are, say you don't have the money to just come in and write me the check,
because it used to be a Sprinter was something that just high-end executives could afford
because they had to write that check for families. Now you can get finance and you can get RV
financing for the entire package for your actual van and the actual build on the van. So I encourage all of my black entrepreneurs,
because a lot of them, barbershops, beauty shops, pet grooming.
I mean, you've got some people who are doing mobile,
mobile barbershops, mobile pet grooming.
We've got a mobile chiropractor who has the chiropractor table there.
Some of the podiatrists are now doing it.
Massage therapists.
Massage therapists. Because if you're dealing with a lot of senior citizens, you may have high clientele,
but it helps you to be able to get around. So like if you're in a big city like Dallas or,
you know, say New York or LA, and you have clients that are all spread out, what we're finding is a
lot of the entrepreneurs
are able to schedule appointments
for certain sectors of their city.
So they may say, okay, we're going to be on the north side
this week, you know.
So each month, they're able to say north, south, east, west.
And it saves on renting office space
and everything that goes along with that.
Because eventually, the vehicle is the mobile work your
your vehicle is your mobile workplace it the brick and mortar now sometimes is just not as convenient
it's just not as affordable and cost efficient boutiques i was just talking to a young woman
this week she has a boutique she's having to close because her rent space in the
shopping village has gone up so astronomically. And so I said, listen, you can do your boutique
on wheels. So now that's what she's doing. She's building a sprinter rolling and she's going to be
on wheels. So y'all can come on. You can do it. Whatever your idea is, that vision in your mind,
and you say, I'm dreaming about this. Well, now's the time to call. So just call me,
816-569-6784. That's 816-569-6784. And that's Sterling Luxury Coaches right here in Kansas
City. We ship them all over the country. Like I said, Roland's here today working on his.
So you don't have to be here.
We ship them out.
So call me.
We'll see what we can do.
SterlingLuxury.com.
And let's see what we can make happen for you on this new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
All right, then.
So this is, first of all, again, it's Sterling Luxury.
That's the company.
And the thing that's amazing, Matt, Monique, and Xavier,
is that this was not a business that Windsor was in.
She didn't know nothing about this business, got an opportunity to buy it,
took it over, learned the business, learned the craft, learned how to do this,
and she's been able to thrive with it.
And, again, like I said, you know, she and I were just talking,
and she was like, yeah, you know, I took this thing over, had absolutely no idea,
and then was able to connect with her.
So they are, like I said, they are building our
new Sprinter. And I want people to understand, I want people to understand,
I want people to understand why we feature multiple type of businesses. Because I think
one of the problems, Matt, is when you don't know,
you don't know. And a lot of times people think, oh, we own barbecue restaurants.
We own barbershops. We own hair salons. But the idea of, no, she's not owning a car dealership,
but she is owning an upscale auto business.
And this is getting people to understand they can see themselves differently.
And when you see it, she doesn't have to be the only woman or the only African-American.
There could be others.
I think that's a great point.
In addition to that, what I think is compelling here is that she purchased an existing business, if I'm correct. So that's also important because a lot of times when we think about
entrepreneurship, I think we only think about the vertical integration, if you will, from the bottom
up. But there are obviously people like this brilliant businesswoman there in Kansas City
who saw the opportunity to purchase a business and is obviously, you know, increasing significantly
based on her expertise. She's clearly got incredible business acumen. But that's another
thing I would just say to echo your sentiments is for people out there who are interested in
entrepreneurship, there are clearly opportunities where you can buy and expand upon those businesses.
And the thing here that I think is also what's interesting,
Monique, is that she lives between New York and Dallas.
And so the shop is based,
so in fact, most of the upfitter shops,
they're actually in the Midwest.
That was the company that we got our Sprinter from is there in the Midwest.
And so
her deal wasn't like, okay, let's
move it here. She's like, no, because
I think it's Elkhart, Indiana,
if I'm correct, is like the RV
capital of the world.
So that's one of the reasons why it's there in the
Midwest. And again, this is
getting people to think just differently about
business and going
beyond just sort of where they are. That's why I think it's a great story. Absolutely. I mean,
her story and your story and supporting her, all of that is like entrepreneurship at 101,
all the way up to advanced doctorates in 401 because it's entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial spirit.
It's being enterprising. It's recognizing where the cash is flowing and getting in on the flow.
It's taking chances on different business, different business model. It's not having to
be in person where your business is in order for your business to flourish. I mean, there are a
million different things that you see. And I do hope that
the people who are watching soak all of that in because we perish for lack of knowledge.
And this is certainly knowledge that we can use that really anybody can apply in their lane.
I was a fan of Bob Proctor. He's gone on. he's, he's journeyed out of his body now. I thought he never would. But one of the things, stories he always told was about figuring out how to make
money before he knew why he was making money, because he just knew how to run business. Uh,
he started a cleaning business and the next thing you knew it was all over the world. So he
understood how to be profitable, uh, before he understood why he was being profitable. So for those of you
who just want your bills paid,
it doesn't have to be your whole
passion in life, beloved.
You can pursue that as well, but
that JLB
will give you some
securing of the bag.
Xavier,
when we were in Tulsa,
we were live streaming one of the marches here.
This is one of the videos we put together. And I was having this conversation with the folks at Mercedes as well as Windsor,
because when we sat down, we were going over how we use the vehicle.
And we we used the Sprinter totally different than how other people do it, because we use it as a live truck, as a
broadcast facility. And so it was really interesting talking with them. So as she and I were going over
what we're going to have in Road Road Mobile 2.0, it was what we learned, what was missing,
and how we use the vehicle. And again, what was great for me is, and I have no problem saying it, folks, understand, that cost us $195,000.
And so for us being able to take our resources and now working with a black-owned upfitter,
this again is another example of us utilizing black-owned drape company, lighting company, set designer, Black-owned engineers, all of that,
in terms of being able to take the Black dollar
and now being able to spread it.
As I always say, we all can eat.
It's not hard, so for us now being able,
and I've already had a couple of people,
in fact, she told me there was a woman who watches us
who saw our Sprinter on the show and on social media and has already come in and wants to get one herself.
That's how black business works.
I know that Kanye West recently criticized Kwanzaa, but one of the days is a cooperative economics. And so the marketplace segment on Roland Martin on Filter is about showcasing all the different excellence in black business, which you are doing on your show.
As I'm watching the segment, I thought to myself, what has been the economic impact on a dollar scale that the marketplace has had in the black economy?
We need more places like that. I wonder,
have you ever sat down, Roland, and thought,
what has been the economic impact
of Roland Martin?
Oh, I can tell you,
I mean, we've had,
I mean, we haven't actually
put the dollar figure together,
but I think when
Rock Deep Global came on,
they moved $20,000, $30,000 in product the next day.
The sister who flipped her alcohol company to hand sanitizer, she was like, hey, we sold out.
I mean, so we've had people hit us and say, we sold out a product after coming on your show. And this is precisely why the segment was created, to showcase Black-owned businesses and for people to see them, to hear them, and talk about the opportunities.
And that's what it's all about.
I mean, Roland, you understand this uniquely.
And that's why, in addition to giving the information, you talk about the economics of Black-owned media and its impact.
And so you're constantly educating your audience why it's important to
bring attention to these issues. Why
it's important to bring attention to Black businesses.
Why it's important to bring attention to
the building of Black wealth in our country.
And so that is an evidence of that.
The fact that we have these antidote stories
about all these businesses that have been
positively impacted by this platform.
Absolutely. And so
this is video here again.
After the accident, it took place in New Orleans where our Sprinter was totaled.
And so folks may have heard me when I said, you know, it costs $195,000.
We could only get up to $125,000.
Then I had, in terms of insurance, then I had these fools like, well, there's underinsured insurance.
Well, fools, we had that.
But you have to actually qualify for that, and we were unable to do so.
So we got back about $126,000,
but we're working through all of this right now.
And like I said, the conversation that I had with Windsor,
the unit that we're getting is actually going to be larger than that one.
And there are a lot of other features that we did not have.
So a lot like, for instance, people ask me, hey, did we see the driver?
Well, our new Sprinter is going to have 360-degree cameras
that are also recording.
So if anything like that happens again, we'll be able to capture whatever.
The accident that happened when Deshaun was driving, we'll be able to capture that.
And so there's so many other features that we'll have.
And so looking forward to that.
But I'm thankful that, again, by us ordering our next one we can utilize a black so the only black owned
upfitter in the country and the only woman upfitter in the country Windsor Barbie with
sterling luxury and so we appreciate it glad to go out today so excited for her as well as for
her daughter Amber and so I can't wait to show you all our new Sprinter,
hit the road.
We're going to be covering the campaigns.
We thought we were going to have it by the end of September,
but because of, of course, supply chain issues,
that's been an issue and because of the popularity.
And so Windsor's been really working with Mercedes to put us at the front of the line
to be able to pull a vehicle
literally off the lines
and then be able to
upfit it with all the things that we need. And so
we appreciate that. And so
I lay out to y'all. And so now
you understand, I'm going to
break, we're going to come back, we're going to do Education Matters.
But this is a perfect example
what Xavier was talking about,
what I'm constantly trying to get
our folks to understand.
We can spend lots of time
on this show talking
about police brutality, talking about voter suppression,
talking about all these critical issues.
But the fact of the matter is
if we're not having a money
conversation, then we're
not having an American conversation. If we're not... Last money conversation, then we're not having an American conversation.
If we're not, last night I was in New York for the screening of the movie Till, about Emmett Till and Mamie Till movie.
First of all, it is an unbelievable movie.
Unbelievable.
And there was a brother, and I'd never heard of his name.
His name was Theodore Howard.
And he was a rich man in maybe Tillmobile State at his home.
And dude had a mega mansion.
It was unbelievable.
And he was talking.
There was a scene, and they were going by the pool, and the kids were playing.
And she said, well, you know, Mr. Howard, thank you for what you do for black people.
And he said, let me be clear.
We need money to advance our agenda.
We need money to achieve our freedom.
And he understood that.
And so the reason we talk about money, this ain't no Creflo dollar, you know, help me buy a plane. This ain't no
this ain't no
Carol, why you dipping your head?
That's why you with the church in Atlanta, Carol?
Okay, I'm
just checking. Carol's like, oh Lord,
he gonna call out Creflo. No, this
is, Monique, why you holding your
finger up like you at church?
This is not
a situation.
This ain't no church prosperity and prosperity gospel. No.
What this is, we cannot talk about social justice
if we are not including black economic social justice.
You can't say, man, we need the lawyers suing folk
if you can't pay the lawyers.
I think Matt agrees with that.
And Monique and Zabin.
You can't sit here and say, oh, man,
we need folk covering our stuff if you can't afford media.
You can't, I mean, we can see
I mean, I think
part of the thing that drives me crazy
about a lot of us
is we
literally think this stuff
happens for free.
And it doesn't.
Next Saturday,
next Saturday, the EPA
is opening this major office in Warren County, North Carolina.
They've been sweating me for two weeks to cover it.
Michael Regan is going to be there, Reverend Barber, Derek Johnson, a load of people.
This is a critically important environmental office in North Carolina.
We don't have any sponsors for it.
That's going to cost several thousand dollars
to go cover it. And so I tell
people this. When you're paying
for equipment and staff, staff
got to eat too. They got families.
And so it takes resources. And so
what I want us as a community
to understand is that
we are talking about black
economics, black economic social
justice, as Xavier said, cooperative.
Dr. King talked about the collective.
That's what this is all about.
We have to stop having surviving conversations and have thrive conversations.
That's what's important.
And so that's why doing this segment is vital because there's somebody who's watching. There's a young brother or a young sister sitting out there saying,
you know, I thought I wanted to open a dealership one day,
but I can open that kind of business.
Or, man, the people who did our green screen,
I can open a black drape company.
If our young folk never see it,
then they'll never believe they can actually do it.
And so that's why it's important.
All right, real quick break.

All momentum we have now, we have to keep this going.
The video looks phenomenal.
See, there's a difference between Black Star Network
and Black-owned media and something like CNN.
You can't be Black-owned media and something like CNN.
You can't be Black-owned media and be scared.
It's time to be smart.
Bring your eyeballs home.
You dig?
Hey, I'm Qubit, the maker of the the Cupid Shuffle and the Wham Dance.
What's going on? This is Tobias Trevelyan.
And if you're ready, you are listening to and you are watching Roland Martin, Unfiltered. Thank you. All right, there's a new resource available for kids up to 10 years old, folks.
The Black Education Station offers educator-based content that focuses on the needs of the black community.
Black instructors from across the globe offer positive, thoroughly engaging formats
with shows like Dr. Bob's Timetables, Mr. J's Classroom,
and math moments that teach children the building blocks of STEM-related courses.
Nancy Marie Gilliam, the spokesperson and creator acquisitions of the black education,
joins me from Philadelphia.
How are you doing?
I am fine. Thank you for having us.
All right. So where does the idea come from?
So during the pandemic and all the social unrest that happened during 2020,
there was an affluent Black family that was concerned about what was going to happen to our children educationally
with all the things that were going on in the nation. So they decided to pool their resources
and to create this first ever streaming platform that was dedicated to the educational needs of
our Black children to ensure that there was a place for them to be able to acquire quality
educational content to bridge any gaps that these situations that we're facing would create.
All right. So where's it streaming? Is it the OTT channel? Is it on YouTube? Where's it streaming?
We're available on Apple TV, Roku TV, anywhere you stream, Black Education Station is and will be available.
So that's the name of the app, Black Education Station?
Yes.
Okay, got it.
And in terms of how many different shows do you have?
Oh, we have a variety of shows.
We have educational content that has actually been created by some of our children.
So we have a Kidpreneur series where two youth, Jabez and Christopher Jenkins, they actually interview youth entrepreneurs. We have Ava, the STEM princess, who does all kinds of STEM research and shows kids how to do experiments. We also have reading contents where authors of black books come on and read their books for the children. We take children on an HBCU tour where students at HBCUs actually take the children on
the tour of the campus virtually to show them what the HBCU life is like. We have another series
called My Career, where it's career day, I'm sorry, and we interview different people to show children the
different options that they have as far as choosing a career. So we offer a plethora of educational
content that is designed to develop the whole child because, you know, right now there's no
holistic education going on in the education
system because that's not what the education system was designed for. The education system
as it stands right now is designed to create people who don't think for themselves, who can
be easily made into slaves. So you have people who go from school to school to school, and then they
take all their creativity, all their talent, all their ability, and they pour that into somebody else's vision.
And at the end of 30, 40 years, they come away with a gold watch, thank you, and their dreams and vision shattered.
So we want to end that cycle and show children that they can do and what they can do and how they can do it.
That's awesome. Let's go to my panel for questions. I'll start with, well, let's see here. Monique.
Yes, the one with kids is really excited about this. Congratulations.
I don't know. This may have children as well. I was just excited to see this and excited to see all of the color, color, color of the children.
Because, you know, using black children and things these days is offensive, apparently.
Yes.
Why?
I wonder.
I wonder.
Wow.
We exist. But what what methods can we use like for children who are and I don't even know if this is what you do,
but I'm asked anyway because I have teenagers to carry on the engagement that you're getting with the the the offerings that you have now that are geared toward younger ages?
Well, eventually we do intend to expand our programming to include middle and high school students.
Because we are brand new, we decided that we were going to just encapsulate the initial content just to that age range until we can get our footing, you know, get a following,
and then we'll be able to expand the content to include those age groups. But for right now,
I would just like engage them. I mean, there's stuff when they, even though we say it stops at
10th grade, you'd be surprised. Like, okay, for example, we're going to go to Hustle Brothers and Celebrity Friends.
So this particular series deals with issues that our youth will have to face.
So there's one particular episode where the Hustle Brothers are trying to teach the youth how to best handle an encounter with the police.
Right. So it starts as a cartoon. They lay the
foundation and then all of a sudden Ice-T appears on the scene. Okay, who better to teach the youth
about how to deal with the cops? And he, I mean, full disclosure, he talks about the time where he
was that rapper that made that song F the Police. He talks about his
history with, you know, playing a cop on TV. So he offers some solid foundational information for
our youth to take away in the event that they have an encounter with a police officer. So,
you know, don't let, don't be swayed that we saying, you know, preschool to,
to, you know, age 10, there's something on that station right now for everybody.
Well, I'm, I'm excited about it. And I hope that our government gets behind you all. Um,
if they're not getting on board already, because with these latest numbers that,
uh, just came out, I believe it was the New York Times that just released the study about the amount of loss that our kids have endured because of the pandemic.
And it's especially that age group that you're targeting. So best wishes to you on that.
And the disparities that, you know, it impacts us the most. And that's why Black Education Station is important because we're losing, you know, even
with, you know, the computer situation. Now, I don't know what it was like where you are, but in
Philadelphia, it was a hot mess. The technology that was offered was not substantial for the
children to even access their classes and, you know, get to learn and they would get frustrated.
So they would log out and, you know, start playing video games because they couldn't get online to
learn. So, you know, we have to do something. I tell everybody everywhere I go, nobody's coming
to save us. We got to save ourselves. So if nobody else is going to do it, we have to bring the
village back. We have to become operators one,
help each other out. You know, if you don't have a child in the age group that we're dealing with,
and, you know, give somebody a subscription, somebody who needs it because the need is out
there. And that's why we exist. All right. Let's see here. Xavier. Congratulations on the black education station.
The question I have about. Is it curriculum focused or supportive of what's going on in the classroom of students or is it just topic content based for for for kids?
And also, is there some sort of financial literacy component program that is part of Black
Education Station? Okay. Currently, the financial literacy component is in development. We did have
a financial literacy coach express some interest. So his content is in development at this point. Most of the topics, you know, it's topic-based. So,
for example, you have the bilingual coach who's teaching children, you know, to be bilingual from
the door, you know, teaching them the English and the Spanish. You have math topics. You have
science topics. So, it's not necessarily curriculum- necessarily based, can be incorporated into an existing
lesson plan to supplement what a teacher may already be doing or what a homeschooling parent
might be doing, you know, trying to do with their children. They can find stuff on the channel
to supplement that, if that makes sense. Thank you. You're welcome.
Matt.
This is a genius idea, and we will definitely be getting subscriptions in my house.
I have young children.
The question I had for you, though, is actually as it relates to the content creators.
So do they license the content to you, or do they have some continued financial stake
as Black Education
Station continues to grow? What is your relationship with them? So they license the content to us.
It remains their content. They can do with their content whatever they please, but we're happy that
they've decided to upload it to the Black Education Station. We do have content creators who are
creating original content for the station. We also have content creators who have already had
their content published on YouTube or, you know, other streaming platforms who have decided to also
stream their content on our platform. So they license to us,
they retain all rights to their property,
and it's a win-win situation for everybody.
All right then, that's absolutely fabulous.
Again, tell everybody where they can download the app.
All right, so Apple TV, Roku TV,
visit the blackeducationstation.com for all of your needs.
We can also be found on our link tree, which has a link to if you wanted to become a content creator, you could click that link.
If you wanted to subscribe, you could click that link.
If you want to be a part of our international commercial, you can click that link.
So that particular link tree is L-I-N-K-T-R dot E-E forward slash Black Education Station.
And you can find all your needs there.
Please buy a subscription.
Give the subscription and support us because we're here to support you.
All right, then. All right.
I appreciate it. Thank you so very much,
and good luck
with that
and all that y'all are doing. Thanks a lot.
Thank you so much. All right, then.
All right, folks.
So, here we go.
You know, remember I was just telling y'all
Xavier, Monique, and Matt, again, how media works.
So Windsor, I was just texting Windsor about her Sprinter company.
This is what she just hit me.
She said, two of the black guys came over to the shop today because they heard you talking about it.
Both in their 50s, driving the Benz, and neither knew what a Sprinter was.
They are intrigued.
I keep telling people, y'all are seeing why black-owned
media matters. You're seeing
it in real
living color.
And y'all know it ain't this much color on
network television.
First of all, it ain't this much color
on this panel
because you ain't going to find
no... Y'all know
unless something major black happened, the queen died. So they ain't going to have no, no, y'all know unless something major black happened, the queen died.
So they ain't going to have no four black people on TV at one
time talking about nothing.
But you ain't going to see this level of color
even, they ain't got this much color in their studios.
And so this is how
we roll. And so
we want y'all to support us in what we do.
Let me thank Xavier. Let me thank Matt.
Let me thank Monique. Thank you so very much
for joining us on today's show.
I want to thank all of y'all as well.
Again, some phenomenal things are happening.
Again, y'all, we are this close.
I cannot wait to tell y'all the first company that wants to launch our 24-hour streaming channel, this close.
These things are happening, y'all.
You saw the announcement of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
I partnered with them with their media rights.
That thing is happening.
Again, the Sprint 2.0 is being built.
Wait until you see the new features we're going to have in that thing.
All the things are happening.
And y'all have been on the ride with us.
For four years, we launched Roller Mark Unfiltered.
We have four years.
Black Star Network for one year.
And for us to go from having this show as the only show to BSN, to having Friday's Daily Show, Debra's Show, having Jackie's Show, having Greg Carr's Show, having Stephanie's Show, having Rolling with Roland, having those shows, having three shows in development.
Y'all, these things are happening.
And listen to me clearly.
All y'all who are watching right now, a whole bunch of haters, black haters are like, yo, it couldn't happen. You're going to
fail. And it's a whole bunch of people who were like, oh no, y'all can't do this here. But I told
y'all, when you have faith in God and faith in yourself and faith in your people that they will ride with you,
or as Nehemiah said, the people said, let us rebuild,
then this thing will happen.
And so that is what is going on.
And so when I put that video out saying, hey, we want some dogs,
we want some folks who want to work hard,
Carol's shaking her head because they've been sending her to the emails,
well, that's part of your job, suck it up.
But deal with it.
She's like, Lord, people send me emails. I'm like,
yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever. But this is
about creating the opportunities,
y'all. And that's what we are
doing. And so we have some exciting
things. We're going to be hitting the road.
Campaigns are coming up. These
things are happening. We got all these different
speeches and things are happening. It is
happening because I want our
people to see we can do it. I want our people to see we can do it.
I want our people to understand that we do not have to live and operate by white validation. What I mean by that is that we have to go ask somebody else, can you please cover our story?
Okay. I got no issue with mainstream. I don't. I'm going to be on Tiffany Cross show tomorrow.
I'm cool with that. I'm fine with that. But we also have to have a place we control, we own, and we dictate what we cover.
Do y'all understand what y'all saw this week? Do you understand that we did Marketplace on Tuesday and Sheila Johnson?
She took over the Mandarin Oriental here in D.C., Black-owned hotel, luxury five-star hotel.
You got this luxury sprinter company here.
The sister was just on about education.
We had the brother who was on the other day
with his technology app, all these different things.
We are bringing you people and stories
you are not going to see on mainstream news.
Ain't going to happen. We've got a waiting list of people
who want to be on Marketplace. We've got a waiting list of people who want to be on Tech Talk
because they're seeing the opportunity. So your support absolutely matters. You downloading the app matters. Last check. I look at it right now.
You know, we've got 892,636 subscribers on YouTube.
It would be a game changer if we had 892,000 downloads of Black Star Network app.
Because we control that.
We're on YouTube, we appreciate that, but we don't control that.
We don't get all that data.
That's why we want you to download the Black Star Network app.
Apple phone, Android phone, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox One, Samsung
Smart TV.
We want that to happen.
We also want you to join our Bring the Funk fan club.
I cannot overstate this, y'all.
I cannot overstate this.
We have to raise $100,000 a month in September, in October, in November, in December, because we are behind.
We have not, these other people out here,
and I'm being transparent,
they're spending billions on political campaigns.
We've only gotten $25,000,
and that's from our DNC buy, which we appreciate.
That's it.
That's it.
Other companies, they've already put in their budgets to get several million dollars.
We have it.
So that's why we do what we do.
So if 2,000 people give an average of 50 bucks each, we hit our $100,000 goal.
Y'all, that's $4.19 a month, $0.13 a day.
So I detail to you all the content that we're giving you on a daily basis,
five hours of original content every single day for $0.13 a day.
That's it.
So see your check and money order at appeal box 57196, Washington, D.C.,

We are abundantly clear who we talk to, who we speak to.
We have white folks who watch our show,
Latinos who watch our show, others who watch our show.
This is also a learning experience.
Last thing, credit's gonna keep rolling,
people who give, don't forget, get White Fear.
Y'all, the book is out, it dropped on Tuesday. Real simple. How the Browning of America is making white folks lose their
minds.
I speak directly to the fact where every time in American
history when you've had black successes,
it's been followed by white backlash.
A lot of what you're seeing in America today is because of
white fear.
Not all white people.
But there are a number of white Americans who are fearful of
what's happening.
They're scared of losing power, of losing resources,
of losing control.
And that's what this is about. And so, if you want to read this book, I can't wait to read it. I'm going to read it. But there are a number of white Americans who are fearful of what's happening. They're scared of losing power, losing resources, or losing control.
And that's what this is about.
And so if you want to read this book, I cut to the chase.
If you don't want to read the book, you can listen to it.
Get it on Audible.
You can get it there.
But again, you can get this in all.
You see the bookstores.
Ben Bella Books is the publisher.
But again, Books a Million, Target, Barnes & Noble, Amazon.
You have Bookshop, Indie Bound, all of those places
you can get it.
Or go to your favorite black owned bookstore
and order the book through them.
Order through them, you support that black owned business.
Folks, that is it for me.
I certainly appreciate it.
Again, I'll see y'all tomorrow morning
on Tiffany Cross' show on MSNBC.
Y'all know I'm always ready to bring the funk because that's what we do. Have a fabulous weekend, folks, and I'll see you on Monday.
Y'all know how I was in the show.
Howl! I'm Martin. Thank you. This is an iHeart Podcast.
