Am I the butthole for leaving my friend in another country? So a couple of years ago, me and three other lads went on a holiday to Cyprus.
Starting point is 00:01:14 We all get along great, and we've known each other for four years since university. There's this one guy in the group, Ellis. He's the type of guy who says he'll meet us at the train station at 8 a.m. and half past eight will give him a ring and he's just hopping in the shower and leaving. He'd be late for his own graduation or wedding or funeral. So after five days of sunbathing, drinking, and eating food, it's our final day. We're all chilling in the villa and Ellis decides to go for a hike.
Starting point is 00:01:45 No stress, we have seven hours before we have to leave. He heads off and we say that we'll get all of us stuff in the car ready to go. It was all packed anyways. Three hours go by, and we give Ellis a call saying he needs to turn back now. He says, no problem, and starts his journey back. He's having a coffee at a cafe. Another two hours go by. We call Ellis, and he says he's on his way back.
Starting point is 00:02:09 He doesn't sound like he's moving. We check his location. He's at a cafe like a three-hour walk away. It's Sunday. We don't know how to call any taxis, so we give him a call saying that he needs to get a lift back to the apartment or meet us at the airports. No worries, lads, I'll run back. We try and plead for him to just get a taxi, but he's frugal and won't get a taxi. So we text him saying his suitcase is in the villa,
Starting point is 00:02:37 and we'll have to leave as our taxi was booked at the last minute anyway. He says that's fine. I'll make it back in time. He doesn't. He didn't even try to make it back quickly. Three hours later, we're all sitting on the plane, and we get a flurry of text. I'm back now. Where are you? When's the taxi coming to pick me up? We just had to say that we got on the plane and he needs to get the next one. He was fuming. His parents and girlfriend kicked off at us,
Starting point is 00:03:07 but I can't help but feel like he deserved it. Yo, is this guy nuts? O.P.'s already boarded the plane and he hasn't even left his hotel. It's a total lost cause. What is he and his parents and his girlfriend expect O.P. to do at that point. Throw himself onto the tarmac in front of the plane to stop it from lifting off and hold the plane hostage for two hours?
Starting point is 00:03:29 The dude's an adult. He needs to understand that adult actions have adult consequences. Opie, you get zero out of five buttholes. I genuinely don't know how you could have done anything more considerate than what you did in the situation. You were as thoughtful and helpful to this moron as you possibly could have been. Am I the butthole for not telling my girlfriend's parents, that I spoke their language for the past three years because they didn't ask.
Starting point is 00:03:55 My girlfriend's parents speak Russian. I also speak Russian. Nothing about me would hint at that. My great-grandpa picked it up as a prisoner of war, gave it to his children, and so did they. I took a Russian course ages ago to make the most out of my random, rudimentary Russian, and just kept listening to and watching Russian content now and then, and I kept it at what I would say is a decent conversational level.
Starting point is 00:04:18 My English is much better, and my French and Italian are better as well. Therefore, I never had any reason to show that off. Never thought much of it. I met my girlfriend, and she has Russian roots, but doesn't speak Russian. It never was a topic. Her parents are native Russian speakers, but also speak perfect German, which is my language. You couldn't tell they weren't born here. Those two do, however, have some short comments back and forth in Russian sometimes.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Nothing delicate, nothing the rest of us wouldn't be allowed to hear. We always speak German, and it's no issue for anyone. Their upbringing is almost never a topic, apart from some funny anecdotes here and there about life as a kid back then. Nothing deep. The other day, a family friend of them also Russian came by. Nice evening, as always. As older generations sometimes do,
Starting point is 00:05:07 they were mocking my generation in a lighthearted, banter joking kind of way. The conversation at one point said something about how much tougher they are compared to us. In an equally joking banter kind of way, I said, I hope you're not scared to put your money where your mouth is in Russian. Shocked silence. Rough language is normal. They wouldn't be offended over a bit of banter, I promise.
Starting point is 00:05:30 Later, my girlfriend said that they were really disturbed that I was fluent in Russian and that I just left them in the dark about it. The thing is, they never asked. It was never a topic. They knew my great-grandpa was a prisoner of war in Siberia. I told them that when it was, actually the topic. And we joked about it because some of the mother's family were locked up
Starting point is 00:05:51 there at about the same time as well. Ha ha, they were cellmates kind of thing. But the language thing never came up. And I just didn't think much about it. Nothing of any gravity ever happened in Russian in the household. Half their family doesn't speak it. We all speak German to each other. I don't see how this matters. I wasn't eavesdropping either. They never shared a secret in Russian while I was there. I wouldn't have said something if that was the case, but it only ever was some random BS. So now they're crossed because apparently I kept a major secret from them. I'm confused because nobody cared about that before. It wouldn't have changed the thing. We understood each other fine and still do. My girlfriend is stressed because she can see both sides, but also thinks the drama
Starting point is 00:06:37 is annoying and pointless. Am I guilty? Uh, I don't know, kind of in the middle. I don't know if this is like a butthole move, but it is really weird behavior. And if I were in the parent shoes, I would probably assume that you were like trying to eavesdrop on them. I think that's a logical conclusion, even if it is an incorrect conclusion. So it's just bizarre that you never mentioned it. And you kept saying, well, they didn't ask. They didn't ask. Is a pretty weak defense? Because, I mean, couldn't you say, yeah, I cheated on you, but you never asked if I cheated, so I didn't tell you. Like, you know what I mean, you kind of, there's some information that you should just automatically volunteer. So I think I'm giving you zero out of five buttholes, but you're just a bit of a weirdo. Am I the butthole for
Starting point is 00:07:20 telling my husband that paternity leave isn't a holiday? I'm a 30-year-old woman, and I gave birth to our son a few days ago. It was incredibly traumatic. I had a severe postpartum hemorrhage, lost 1.8 liters of blood, and had emergency surgery to remove my placenta. I'm still recovering. Our son was born with pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum and was admitted straight to the NICU. He'll likely need heart surgery, and we've since been told that they found another abnormality they're investigating. My husband has a son from a previous relationship. I want to be clear that I have no issue with Greg meeting his little brother or spending time with his dad. I've never asked him to choose between his children. Two days after I gave birth, I thought Greg's mom would bring him to meet the baby
Starting point is 00:08:08 before taking him home. Instead, my husband collected Greg and spent the entire day with him. They went on the London eye, had lunch, he had a beer, then went home to play Xbox until Greg was collected around 9 p.m. During that day, my husband spent around 20 minutes with our newborn in the NICU and barely saw me. My mom stayed with me on the postnatal ward, but she couldn't come into the NICU. So I was making my own way to see our son while recovering from major blood loss and surgery. When I explained that I wasn't upset Greg had visited, but that I hadn't expected to be left alone all day while our baby was critically ill, my husband became defensive. He said he enjoyed spending time with Greg and that he was being a parent. I replied that I wasn't saying he
Starting point is 00:08:57 shouldn't parent Greg. I was saying I needed him to be a husband to me and a father to our newborn during what was a medical emergency. When I later explained how serious my blood loss had been, his response was, my sister lost five. I think he means five liters of blood. The next day, I told him doctors had found another abnormality with our son's heart. He complained nobody had told him. I pointed out that he had already left because he'd only spent about 20 minutes in the NICU. I've now been discharged, but our son is still in the NICU. I'm exhausted and terrified to leave him, while my husband has again spent the morning taking Greg to the cinema.
Starting point is 00:09:39 I finally told him that paternity leave isn't supposed to be a holiday and that I don't feel supported. I said, if this is what his paternity leave looks like, I'd almost rather he went back to work, because at least then I would understand why I was doing a day, everything alone. He says I'm being unfair because he's trying to balance both children. Am I the butthole? Yo, you can't even believe his excuse. It's a lame excuse that he's trying to balance children just by itself. But even then, he's actually not balancing children.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Because 20 minutes with a hospitalized child versus two full days with the other kid is the opposite of balance. It's very imbalanced. Your husband is incredibly callous and heartless. it's a little unusual because the fact that he's spending so much time with Greg would imply to me that he does want to be an involved and caring father so it's kind of strange to see him care so much about spending time with Greg but then care so little about spending time with you and his other son I almost wonder if it has nothing to do with spending time with his kids and has everything to do with him just doing stuff that he likes
Starting point is 00:10:46 like going to the movie and playing video games and drinking beer and hanging out with his kids is just unexcused to go have fun. O.P., you get zero out of five buttholes. I'm giving your husband 3.5 out of five buttholes. Am I the butthole for telling my boyfriend's sister to help instead of criticizing me? I'm a 22-year-old woman,
Starting point is 00:11:05 and I've been with my boyfriend, who's 26, for just over three years. He has an older sister, who's 31, with two kids. We've always been civil, but we've never been close. She's one of those people who likes making little comments at other people's expense, and then says everyone is too sensitive if they don't laugh. Most of the family ignores it because that's just how she is. And I usually do too because I don't think every comment is worth arguing over.
Starting point is 00:11:33 Last weekend, my boyfriend's parents hosted a barbecue because his grandparents were visiting. There were around 20 people there between family and close friends. His mom had been cooking all day, so I helped carry food out, clear plates, and refill drinks whenever she asked. While we were bringing dessert outside, she thanked me for always helping without being asked. I told her it really wasn't a big deal. As soon as we got back outside, my boyfriend's sister laughed and said, Someone's really trying to earn those daughter-in-law points. I smiled because I thought she was joking, but then she added, you know, you don't have to audition anymore, right? I just ignored it because I didn't want to make things awkward. About half an hour later, my boyfriend's mom asked
Starting point is 00:12:17 if anyone wanted more lemonade. Since I was already getting up for another drink, I offered to refill a few glasses while I was in the kitchen. As I picked up the picture, his sister laughed again and said, See, she's campaigning. That was the point where I finally asked what her problem was. She shrugged and said she was just calling it how she sees it. Without really thinking, I replied, if helping clean up after dinner is campaigning, maybe you should run for office once in a while. The table went completely quiet. She immediately asked if I was calling her a bad daughter. I told her, no. I was saying it was strange she kept criticizing me for helping when she hadn't helped with anything all afternoon. She grabbed her husband and kids and left. Since then, she's been telling people I embarrassed her
Starting point is 00:13:05 over a harmless joke. My boyfriend agrees that she started it, but things I should have ignored her because everyone already knows what she's like. And now every family gathering is going to be awkward. His mom called me the next day and told me not to apologize because she's been putting up with comments like that for years and someone was eventually going to snap. His dad thinks his daughter was wrong, but also thinks that I should apologize for embarrassing her in front of everyone instead of pulling her aside. I don't think what I said was that bad, but I also know I could have just let it go like I usually do. God, I get so exhausted by people who can dish it out but can't take it.
Starting point is 00:13:47 Here's my witty comment that insult you a little bit. And then when you turn it back on them, Oh, boo-hoo, my feelings. Oh, my God. It's always just a joke when she's the one joking. But when you clap back, suddenly, how could you? That's so insulting. And it really bothers me that people say,
Starting point is 00:14:05 oh, that's just how she is. Let's just ignore it. But clearly, that's how O.P. is, too. So if we ignore her for throwing out insults, because that's how she is, shouldn't we also ignore O.P. for throwing out clapbacks because that's also how she is? O.P., you get zero out of five buttholes. The hypocritical sister with a glass jaw gets 0.5 out of five buttholes. Am I the butthole for calling out a coworker during a potluck? Yesterday, we had a company potluck for our department of roughly 15 people as a going away celebration for a co-worker, Tom. Most people brought something, and
Starting point is 00:14:41 including Tom. Some co-workers didn't, which isn't normally a big deal, except for one co-worker, Bob. Bob didn't bring anything. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen Bob bring anything to a potluck, and we have several a year. During our potluck, we leave the food out for a bit, then put it in the refrigerator for people to snack on or eat when they get a chance during their shift. While we're all putting food away, Bob pulled out a few Tupperware containers and started filling them with food that, other people brought. I confronted Bob about it, and he said that he didn't want to cook later after his shift, so he was bringing some food home. I told him that maybe those people who cooked that food would like to bring it home instead. Bob just shrugged and continued packing containers. He also grabbed a couple of packs of cookies left out and threw them in his back. I brought this up
Starting point is 00:15:33 to a couple of coworkers who did bring a lot of food, and they seemed reasonably upset. So am I the butthole for calling Bob out and telling others what he did? Not at all, O.P. Bob is a selfish a-hole. You get zero out of five buttholes. Bob gets 1.5 out of five buttholes. That was our slash am I the butthole.
