Wayfair, every style, every home. Welcome to R slash Am I the Butthole where O.P. skips his own
daughter's wedding. Am I the butthole for going on a motorcycle trip with my friends instead of my daughter's
wedding? Last year, I was told.
my daughter was getting married in 2025. I immediately supported this decision and I was there
every step of the way. Following tradition, I gave her 4,500 bucks to help with venue payment. During the
planning process, they changed from a local wedding to a destination wedding in Puerto Rico, and
they forwarded a timeline a year to last fall, giving me a year less to pay for the wedding. Now,
I had to pay for flights and accommodations for people. Reservations for Airbnb's were made and
purchased and tickets were bought. Then my daughter and her fiancee broke up over some petty
immature reason. I was stuck with the bill. I tried for refunds, but was told the trip was going ahead
for revenge photos to make him feel bad. So that and because my wife and stepkids are Puerto Rican,
I said fine. In total, the trip cost me $22,500. Shortly after that trip, I was invited to write
through Glacier National Park with some buddies. I figured, well, I've paid for multiple trips to
Disney as well as multiple trips for people to go to Puerto Rico, so sure, I think I earned it.
My buddies and I planned this for September. My daughter left about four months ago to go back
to her man and didn't say a word to me. We haven't talked once since she left. Zero explanation
or call. The other day, she showed up at the house and told me, matter-of-factly, that the wedding is back
on and I needed to be there. It was going to be on Thursday, September 11th. I told her I can't make it.
I had prepaid plans already. She said, you're really going to miss my wedding? I told her,
I was there for the first one. She said there wasn't a first one. I said, not according to my
bank account. She walked off and now I apparently am the butthole. O.P., it appears to me that your
daughter has a habit of making poor decisions. So even if you do miss the wedding, I wouldn't worry
too much because I doubt that marriage will last. Hey, maybe you can show up for her third wedding.
Will I be the butthole if I file a formal complaint against an international student in my master's
program? I'm a 38-year-old woman, and I'm the only American in this program. The program is in
Europe. Everyone else in the program is either from India or Africa. There are obviously a lot of
cultural differences, most of which are fine, even great. However, there's been persistent and blatant
sexist behavior from several of the guys. There's one in particular that I'm at my wits end with.
Another girl and I were appointed class representatives. The job is essentially to liaise between
staff and students. Hold forums, take feedback, and give feedback and suggestions to staff and report
back on progress. During training, we were given strict instructions on what is and is not within our
realm of what we can do. The role was communicated during orientation via email when we were
nominating class reps. However, multiple of the guys took this to mean that we were obligated to be
their stand-in mothers, party planners, and secretaries. We were getting people in our faces,
demanding to know why we hadn't sent out instructions on what they should be doing every day,
telling them when and where to be for different events, reminding them of assignment deadlines,
reading and editing their assignments, planning get together, and cooking and cleaning for everyone.
It was so shocking to me that the first time this happened, I literally had no idea what to say.
I just stood there with my mouth open for several seconds.
No amount of setting boundaries was working. It just got more aground.
aggressive demands. We spoke with staff who were horrified. Staff called a meeting where the
head of the department, a man, was very direct and said these girls are not your mothers. You are
grown men and you're expected to keep up with your own timetable and no one should be reading
and editing anyone's assignments. You should all be contributing to plans. They then sent out an
email in writing and I also personally sent a text. This stopped a great deal of it. Some of the
guys even started keeping the others in check. A couple seemed to have really grown throughout the
year. Others are still at it. One guy in particular has not stopped. Every time anyone suggests
doing anything, he tells us to plan it. We always say no and invite him to do it. During group
work, he will not keep notes, facilitate anything if there's a woman in the group even though
we're specifically instructed to rotate tasks. Again, I've directly addressed this and also
literally sat and just refused to be the one to take notes, and he's kept pushing the paper towards me.
I got up and left the room. So apparently, there have been numerous general complaints against
more than one of the guys, including by a member of staff who was apparently harassed. So the head
of the entire business school came by and spoke to the entire cohort before a study trip this week,
reminded everyone that they signed a contract before registration, dating they will not engage in certain
activities and that any complaints will start putting individuals into formal process and discipline.
Welp, the guy did it again on the trip. We were at the formal dinner the school put on, and he was
loudly complaining about his meal, which he does at every meal. And someone said something to him
about this being our last meal together, and he was like, no it's not, and he told me to plan
something for next month and make sure that he had jala frice. I said, I'm not willing to do
do anything that you aren't willing to do. He said it's my obligation. I'm a rep. And I said,
no, it's not. That's been explained to you multiple times in multiple ways. Then another guy came
and literally took a bite of my rice off my plates. I ordered fish, which came with rice,
and none of the other dinners did. I swatted his hand away and said, excuse me. And then he left,
but then came back later and saw that I'd finished my meal and said, selfish. And then
left the dinner. Some of the other students are always dismissing this behavior due to cultural differences,
but in my opinion, it's extremely unacceptable, has been addressed multiple times, and has made
the whole experience so awful and intolerable for me. I can't imagine these guys going out into
the workplace and continuing this behavior. I feel like I want to make a formal complaint,
but I know this would result in disciplinary action. Will I be the butthole? O.P., good! I hope it does
result in disciplinary action. They need to be discipline. Action needs to be taken. Disciplinary action,
therefore, sounds perfect. Also, O.P. posted an update to say that she did file a formal report.
Great. I hope they get much, much more than a slap on the wrist. Am I the butthole for telling my
mother-in-law she couldn't visit my wife in the hospital the same day our child was born?
My wife and I discussed it in the days leading up to the birth of our son, and we agreed that we
did not want any visitors the same day that he was born. My mother-in-law was notified that my wife was
going to require a C-section. And my wife told me to tell my mother-in-law when she'd be able to come and visit,
and I told my wife I'd do so. I texted our group chat from my wife's side of the family,
updating them that the procedure went well, and the mama and baby were doing perfect. My mother-in-law
replied and said, I know you didn't tell me to come, but we're in the waiting room. We're so excited
and want to be here for you too.
I texted her back saying that we appreciated her coming up, but that they should go home and that we would see them tomorrow.
My father-in-law called me shortly after and insulted me in every way imaginable,
and my mother-in-law sent me a long text saying how disrespectful it was of me to not allow them to visit their daughter.
I quickly reminded them that today wasn't about them and that it was about my wife, the baby, and I.
We haven't spoken since.
Am I the butthole? Man, picking a fight with someone the day they become a parent is kind of nutso.
It's like they're trying to speed run going no contact for their grandchild.
O.P., you get zero out of five buttholes. I totally understand why your wife didn't want to see them the day she gave birth.
Am I the butthole for involving myself in this conflict at a restaurant tonight?
I'm a woman in my 20s, and I was at a restaurant this evening.
A high school girl was there celebrating her graduation, wearing a backless,
sleeveless dress. She had a bit of an acne breakout on her back. Nothing anyone would have noticed
or cared about under normal circumstances. A young man, early 20s, was also dining there with his family.
He had some sort of intellectual disability, which was apparent from the time they arrived. At some
point, he pointed at the girl and loudly said something to the effect of,
You have pimples all over your back. That's gross. People don't want to see that while they're eating. Go home.
The girl was visibly upset. She and her party didn't say anything, but she excused herself to the
restroom and came back wearing a heavy sweatshirt in an outdoor dining area in 80-degree heat.
Not long after she returned, the young man continued making loud, negative comments about her
appearance, how his appetite was ruined by seeing her acne, how it reflects poor hygiene,
and how inconsiderate it was of her to have it visible in a restaurant.
His parents, I assume, apologized to the girl's family, but didn't actually do anything to stop him.
His mother even said to the girl, believe it or not, it actually means he likes you.
The people in the girls' party were understanding and told the other family not to worry about it,
but there was an unmistakable shift in the mood of the entire room, and it was upsetting for me to be a witness to.
One table got up abruptly and then returned.
I suspect they complained about it to the staff, but if so, it fell by the wayside on a busy night because nothing came of it.
After a few more loud, negative comments from the young man, I went to his table and said something along the lines of,
This is making me really uncomfortable, and you really need to do something. It's disruptive at this point.
The family apologized to me, but didn't actually take any action.
Not too long later, the restaurant moved the family to another area, but not before the people.
parents made it clear that they felt they shouldn't have to move since their son wasn't being
deliberately malicious and didn't intend any harm. The friends I was with at dinner were upset that I said
anything. They felt that it wasn't my place to get involved and that I only embarrassed our party and
made things worse for the girl. I was confident in my decision at the time, but I respect my
friend's opinions very highly. So I'm starting to second guess myself. Am I the butthole? Opie, there are people in
this world who are so worried about being rude or upsetting the social order or being awkward or
imposing on other people that they'll literally just allow injustice and horrible things to happen
because they don't want to mess up the vibes. Opie, your friends are a bunch of spineless wussies
and you did the right thing. That guy's parents suck. Who cares if he didn't mean anything malicious?
It still had the effect of harming the young girl's feelings. Like, which of these
is worse. You intend to harm someone, but it doesn't work. They don't mind. Or you don't intend to harm,
but it does actually cause harm and the person's feelings are hurt. I think actually it's the second
one that's worse, right? That you didn't mean to harm them, but you still hurt their feelings because
it actually caused damage. But the parents are just, uh, you know, what can we do? Nothing at all. We
haven't tried anything, but nothing's working. O.P., you get zero out of five buttholes. I'm giving
those parents two out of five buttholes. Am I the butthole for refusing to
switch hospital rooms after another patient complained about me? I'm an 18-year-old woman, and I had to stay in
the hospital for a few days due to complications. I was sharing a hospital room with a woman in her 40s or 50s.
It started off fine between us, but after the first day, she started making comments about me
being on my phone the majority of the time and looking too healthy for a hospital visit.
When my friend came to visit me, I shared some quiet conversation with him and laughed a little while he was visiting
to make me feel better. After he left, my roommate started yelling at me about how disrespectful I was to
others and how younger people have no manners these days. I apologized about her saying I was disrespectful
since I may have been loud with my friend. But she insisted that I was being loud with my phone
in the hospital while I was on the phone with family who were worried about me. Later that night,
a nurse came into my room and asked if I was willing to switch rooms with her since she complained
multiple times about me to the hospital staff. I said that I was fine in my room. My stuff was all here,
and I didn't do anything wrong in the hospital other than having one visitor while on my phone.
She then stated that it would keep the peace between us in the hospital. I refused to move rooms.
My roommate got upset at me for refusing to move rooms and started to cry. My mom says I should have
just switched rooms instead of dealing with my roommate's drama. My friends think that my roommate was
being rude to me from the start. Am I the butthole? Yeah, I'm on your side, O.P. If your roommate had such
a big problem, why didn't she move? She sounds like the type of person who wants her problem to be
everyone else's problem. I'm giving you zero out of five buttholes. Your roommate gets one out of five.
