Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, I'm Mike Berenholz. On my new show, Funny You Ask, Trivia starts the conversation, and then things immediately go off the rails. I ask a question. My guests think they know the answer. Sometimes they do. More often, they do not. And then the conversation takes a turn. One trivia question turns into stories about career highs, painful bombs, and behind-the-scenes moments
Starting point is 00:00:22 that probably should have remained private. You'll hear confidence, misplace confidence, bold guesses, wrong answers, quick laughs, and the slow realization that maybe this was a bad idea to say out loud. If you like smart comedy, sharp conversations, and trivia that exists purely to melt people's brains, this is Funny You Ask with me, Ike Barrenholz. Follow Funny You Ask with Ike Barronholz on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Welcome to R-slash, Am I the Butthole, where O.P. mocks her co-worker's terrible nose job.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Am I the Butthole for making my coworker cry because I mocked her nose. I'm a woman who's working long-term in Korea and got hired for a company that consisted of only Koreans. There's this one particular coworker that was really nice to me, until I showed her a picture of my boyfriend one day, who's also Korean. From that day onward, she low-key started being a bit snarky towards me. At first, she would comment on the type of food I would eat, like, wow, you're eating all of that? That's a lot of calories. But as time went on, the comments got nastier and nastier. There was this one time where she asked me if my great-grandparents were a certain political party from Germany around the time period of World War II because I'm
Starting point is 00:01:38 German-American. But at the time, I didn't realize she was being passive-aggressive and thought she was genuinely concerned about my health and curious about my family history. I only started to realize the shade when she started commenting on my relationship with my boyfriend, talking about how she didn't like there were so many white girls dating Korean guys nowadays, and basically the typical, racist, ethnic homogeneity is good stuff. At this point, I was just fed up with her and started ignoring her and refusing to look in her general direction. But recently, there was this one incident where she started talking trash about my looks, and I told her that at least I didn't need an obvious and terrible nose job to look decent. But I said this way too loudly, and basically
Starting point is 00:02:23 everyone on the floor heard my comments. Because everyone was standing in our direction, she started tearing up and crying. To be honest, I knew that she was insecure about her nose, because since it was a secret that she told me before the beve, how she regretted the surgery, because it didn't turn out the way she hoped. But because I was so angry and she was dissing my looks, I blurted it out. I told my boyfriend about this, and he said that I was in the right. But the general consensus among my other co-workers was that I shouldn't have said that personal secret out loud and instead talked with her privately. Am I the butthole? The comments seem to be split between Not the Butthole and Everyone Sucks Here. Personally, I'm in the Not the Butthole camp. Because the basic rule of life is that once you start something
Starting point is 00:03:09 with someone, you have to understand that they might return that energy right back to you. Like, people are saying, oh, O.P. should be professional and respect her secrets. Why, though? Why is it OP's obligation to be professional when her coworker isn't being professional? Why should OP respect her secrets when the coworker isn't respecting OPs, race, or choices, or boyfriend or whatever? If someone punches you, you're not the butthole for punching them back. That's just a fact of life. So I'm guessing because I'm seeing so many everyone sucks here, there's going to be some disagreements in the comment, but I really do think OPE was justified here. You don't always have to take the high road in life. Sometimes you can just match energy.
Starting point is 00:03:49 O.P., I'm giving you zero out of five buttholes. I'm giving her coworker 1.5 out of five buttholes. Honestly, I think people can be kind of naive. Like, talk to her privately. Oh, cruel coworker, I would appreciate it if you would please stop being cruel to me. You could try the HR route, but I read enough stories to know that HR typically just doesn't care. So, you know, sometimes them's fighting words. Am I the butthole for not bringing my kids to see my ex-wife during my time with them?
Starting point is 00:04:17 My ex-wife, Lisa and I, divorced last summer. We share two kids, ages 10 and 7. My wife currently has primary custody of them, and I get them two weekends a month with extra time during summer and holidays. I've been working very hard to change our custody agreement in order to get more time with the kids. But the main hurdle is that I live too far away from their school, so I'm looking to move closer, but that takes time. This past weekend, I had the kids, and I took them to visit my parents since they live on a lake. We spent seven to spend seven Saturday morning on the boat fishing and tubing and having a blast. When we were back at the house, getting ready for dinner, Lisa sent me a text asking if we could talk, so I gave her a call.
Starting point is 00:04:58 She said she was having a rough day and feeling very emotional and alone. She asked if she could talk to the kids for a bit, and I agreed. After a few minutes, the kids gave me my phone back because Lisa wanted to talk more. She asked if I'd be willing to bring the kids back to her for the rest of the weekend because she missed them and just wanted to be around them. I told her, no, because this is my time with them. I asked her what was going on because she usually doesn't contact me when I have the kids, except to arrange drop-offs. She kind of tiptoed around it for a bit, but eventually said that she had a date that evening, but he ghosted her, and she's feeling really emotional about it. It took every ounce of self-control I have, not to start laughing. She then said that she already asked
Starting point is 00:05:44 the kids about it and they said they were fine with it. I told her that's some manipulative BS and that I'm not going to sacrifice my limited time with the kids just because she got stood up. I reminded her that she has the kids much more often than I do and I'm going to keep them every single second that our custody agreement allows. She told me that I was being a jerk and that if the kids want to go back to her, then I should let them. I told her that the kids don't get to make that decision, and I'll be keeping them until our agreed-upon drop-off on Monday and ended the call. She sent a few texts later that night, and during Sunday basically called me a butthole, but I never responded. I figured the text might come in handy when I try to change the custody
Starting point is 00:06:28 agreement. The kids and I spent a lot more time on the Lake Sunday, and then I brought them back to Lisa on Monday. She made a comment about how much she missed them and how she wished she could have seen them sooner while giving me a weird look. I didn't respond because, it's not worth the fight. I understand feeling emotional about being stood up, but none of that is my fault, and the way she went about it felt very underhanded and manipulative. O.P., that's because it literally was underhanded and manipulative. It's your time, you have a right to spend time with her kids. Also, she's treating her kids in a kind of uncomfortable way, where she's expecting her kids to cheer her up when she's down. Nah, man, that's not how it works. Your kids aren't emotional
Starting point is 00:07:12 support animals. Also, I straight up don't believe the wife when she said that the kids wanted to be with her. What 10-year-old and 7-year-old wants to leave a lake where there's tubing to go cheer up their sad mom? Nah, man, kids want a boat and fish and tube and catch frogs and swim. So that was just a manipulative lie. O.P., you get zero out of five buttholes. Your entitled ex-wife gets two out of five buttholes. Am I the butthole for not changing my work arrangements to suit my ex-girlfriend who's taken a job 100 miles away from home and is planning on commuting? So basically, my ex-girlfriend and I separated seven years ago. We have a daughter together while I have two daughters from a previous relationship. We've both moved on with our lives, and we have shared custody of our daughter, 50-50.
Starting point is 00:08:00 On the days that I have my daughter, I have to collect and leave her to school, and my ex would organize the other days, which means I have to leave work early on days and arrive late on days. Thankfully, my employer has been very understanding and has accommodated my situation as long as the hours are compensated, which would involve me being available on weekends for emergencies. Not an ideal situation, but it works. Anyways, my ex has taken up a job a hundred miles away, and her plan is to commute daily. I have my opinions on that, but not my monkey, not my circus. She had arranged for her dad to collect her daughter on her days
Starting point is 00:08:38 and what seems like a noble idea and a great solution. However, reality has set in, and he finds his days are restricted either collecting the daughter or leaving to school. And the novelty has passed and pretty much told her that he won't be available as he promised. Now this leaves my ex stranded as she has no one else to call upon to collect and leave to school. She's asked me to work from home three to four days per week, which would allow her to continue her role 100 miles away and ensure her daughter is collected on time each day. This isn't an option for me, and in telling her that I can't accept these changes, she's accusing me of clinging to the past, being bitter about the breakup and doing my best to sabotage and stifle her career. Yo, 200 miles per day is absolutely insane. That's the craziest thing I've read all week.
Starting point is 00:09:29 If we're being super generous and assume the entire drive is interstate where you're driving 60 miles per hour, that is three hours minimum, probably closer to four, on the road every single weekday. Four times five, that's 20 hours. That's literally an entire day of your life every week driving. Crazy. Absolutely crazy. This woman is making a terrible decision and is expecting you to save her from it. Am I the butthole for telling my daughter that her money issues are not the family problem? and if she can't afford to go on vacation, then she can't go.
Starting point is 00:10:03 My middle child, Kelly, is in her early 30s. Kelly made some bad decisions in college and had to drop out, so she was in debt with no degree to show for it. She's bounced around with low-paying jobs for a while. My other two kids finish school and have stable careers. I personally will only lend money for actual emergencies. My sister has invited everyone in the family on a family vacation to a resort outside of the country.
Starting point is 00:10:28 The deal is that you need to pay for your flight and food costs. Housing will be paid for by my sister. Everyone's pretty excited for the trip, and it's going to take place at the end of this year around the holidays. My spouse and I have been saving a tonne since we learned about the trip at the beginning of the year. My spouse and I just bought our tickets, which are around $1,000 each. I got a call from Kelly asking if I could pay for her tickets. I told her, no, and I don't have the money.
Starting point is 00:10:54 I thought that was the end of it. Kelly went on to call the rest of the family asking for money so she could go. They turned her down. Kelly and I got into an argument after this. She called again asking for the money. I told her no and it started an argument. She told me it was unfair that she can't go on the family vacation and that I could make it work. I told her I can't.
Starting point is 00:11:15 I would need to go into debt to pay for that. So no. I refuse to take money out of our savings. That's for emergencies and it went on for a while. In the end, I told her that, money issues is not the family's problem, and if she can't afford it, she just can't go. She called me a jerk and claims that I'm not supporting her. I told her this isn't an emergency, it's vacation, and I'm not giving her money for vacation. Okay, this might be a hot take. I might
Starting point is 00:11:42 get some hate in the comments here, but, Opie, I think if paying for your daughter's $1,000 ticket would put you into debt, then you shouldn't be going on this vacation either. To me, vacations are luxuries that you pay for only after you're in a solid financial situation. But if an extra $1,000 makes or breaks this for you, O.P., then yeah, if I were in your situation, personally, I would skip that vacation. So, based on that, it should be very obvious how I feel about the daughter. She has no business going on this vacation either. Down in the comments, we have a post from Mirwin that actually stresses me out reading it. My middle sister floated the idea of a family vacation to Paris. My husband and I said no.
Starting point is 00:12:25 We had a very large expense last year. Even though we can technically afford it, it wouldn't be responsible. My oldest sister has four boys and literally told her husband they would mortgage the house because they are going. They'll all leave at the end of this month. All right, mortgaging your house to go to Paris is psychotic behavior to me. I know you only live once, and to some people they prefer travel over security. but, I mean, I think that's bonkers. O.B., I am solidly on your side.
Starting point is 00:12:56 You get zero out of five buttholes. Am I the butthole for yelling at an obese woman in a movie theater? Tonight, I went to the movies to see the back rooms with my partner. We arrived just as the movie started, settled in, and began watching. About 30 minutes into the movie, a couple came and sat right next to us. Usually, I wouldn't care if someone comes in late to a movie, as I know that I have before. However, this couple came in making a ridiculous amount of noise. I'm talking multiple rappers of food getting tossed around and crinkled every few seconds.
Starting point is 00:13:28 Non-stop chatter between the two of them for, I'm not even kidding, 15 minutes. The woman kept burping loudly in between them talking to each other. They were half whispering, but in a silent theater, it was incredibly noticeable and enraging. The woman also kept obnoxiously pointing at the screen and going, ooh, ooh, look at that! To her boyfriend of like completely non-eventful shots from the film, and then would loudly kiss him. After putting up with this for roughly 20 minutes,
Starting point is 00:13:56 I finally snapped. I turned to them and loudly said, Are you two going to keep talking, or can you shut the F up? It's extremely distracting. They just stared at me and then didn't talk for the rest of the movie, so I guess mission accomplished.
Starting point is 00:14:11 I know I probably shouldn't have cursed, but at a certain point, it's just ridiculous how some people don't give a single F about the people around them. The same kind of people who cut you off in traffic while drooling on their phones. Anyways, that's it. Let me know if I'm the butthole.
Starting point is 00:14:26 O.P., I'm not really sure why you brought up the woman's obesity. It has nothing to do with the story. The woman is definitely obnoxious and has no business acting like that way in a theater, her and her boyfriend. They are the scum of movie theaters, but you're just kind of attacking this woman on other merits for no real reason.
Starting point is 00:14:43 So for that, I'm going to give you 0.5 out of five buttholes, but for the obnoxious loud people, they get 1.5 out of five butholes. That was our slash am I the butthole.
