Welcome to R-slash-am I the butthole where OP ruins a wedding by selfishly giving birth.
Am I the butthole for telling my daughter-in-law to get over her wedding being overshadowed by my
daughter? Some background. My daughter-in-law, Rebecca, and my daughter, Jesse, don't have the
best relationship. Their personalities do not mesh well at all. Rebecca finds Jesse to be stuck up,
and Jesse finds Rebecca to be annoying. I also think Rebecca is jealous of Jesse because there's a
big money gap between them. So they don't like each other, but act civil in front of each other.
The issue is that Rebecca and my son's wedding was in early July. Jesse's due date for giving
birth was an early August. The wedding was going fine, until Jesse's water broke,
and she needed to be rushed off to the hospital.
I went to the hospital while my husband stayed at the wedding.
Jesse's early birth completely overshadowed Rebecca's and my son's wedding.
A lot of people were waiting on news about Jesse and the baby,
especially since this is the first grandkid between the whole family.
Jesse delivered a healthy baby boy that night.
They've been arguing about it since.
Rebecca wants Jesse to apologize for overshadowing the wedding.
And Jesse refuses to because it's not like she planned.
planned on giving birth. To get to the issue, my husband's birthday is this weekend. I called my
daughter-in-law to ask her about her allergies and whether the restaurant would be okay with her.
She asked if Jesse was coming, and I told her yes. She then told me that neither she nor her
husband, my son, would be there if Jesse was there. I asked if she was serious and she said she was.
I told her she needed to get over her wedding being overshadowed because someone went into labor. I told her
That's ridiculous. She called me a B word and told me I favor Jesse. I'm unsure if I should
apologize or if I'm the jerk here. I'm not going to uninvite Jesse to her dad's birthday.
Clearly, Rebecca is a incredibly toxic and real piece of work. Clearly, Rebecca is a real
piece of work here because you've got to keep in mind. Her husband is related to Jesse,
right? The brother and sister. So that's his nephew that's been born, his own
flesh and blood. And Rebecca is willing to destroy her husband's relationship with his family just because
her ego wasn't stroked enough on her special day. Well, okay, it was Jesse's special day too, wasn't it? In many
ways, wasn't her childbirth also overshadowed by the wedding? Because everyone couldn't be there at the
hospital waiting for the birth, they had to be at the wedding. So it kind of sucks for both of you.
Just get over yourself. O.P., you are definitely in the clear here. Rebecca,
Rebecca sucks balls. I'm giving Rebecca two out of five buttholes. Am I the butthole for telling my
coworker that he can't use autism to excuse him being a butthole? So I'm a 19-year-old woman,
and my coworker is a 22-year-old guy. We had a bit of a falling out at work today, and I was
wondering if I was the butthole and possibly ablest in this situation. So for context, I tend to
wear my hair down most of the time at work. I've never worn it up at work until today. I did a
slicked back bun, which to be honest made me look a little bald. Some of my co-workers asked why I was
wearing it up, as I usually don't, but I just explained that I had to go somewhere immediately after work.
Other than that, no rude comments. Except from my coworker. I was the register in front of him. I hadn't
seen him yet that day, and I turned around to ask him something. He saw my hair and goes,
Oh my God, ugh. This caught me off guard, and I'm a little deaf, so I said, excuse me?
At that moment, a customer appeared at my register, so I turned back around.
A few minutes later, he appears behind me, not at his register, fully standing behind me, and was like,
Hey, I just wanted to explain that I'm autistic and I don't like new things, like your hairstyle.
And your hair is just so ew to me.
Didn't even apologize.
I explained to him that I know it looks a little strange because it's a military-style button.
He made a grossed out face at this and keeps making a gagging face.
when he looks at my hair. I responded that he was still really freaking rude saying,
ooh to my face, autism or not. He responds by saying that I'm not the only one. He also freaks out
when he sees other people not wear usual hats, things like that. All throughout the day,
he keeps coming over behind me, saying that he's autistic, he's autistic, he's autistic, he's autistic,
still no apology. He keeps calling my hair gross or, ew, just talking about his autism. This goes on for like
six hours, mind you, while I have customers. Like, dude, save it for the break room at least. Eventually,
I get fed up with him in my ears. So I turned around and told him that his autism doesn't excuse being
rude to my face, and that I doubt the reason is even autism like he says, because I know for a fact
that he hasn't done this with others. He got mad and told me that I was being really insensitive,
and that I was being a butthole in front of the customers. I also got a little heated and told him that
I don't really care about his autism and that if he knows he has issues with being grossed out at
change, then that's his issue to fix. Not some BS that I have to take for six hours of my workday
just because he doesn't get social cues. He stormed off. I told this to a coworker after my shift,
and she said that I sounded really ableist because I have no idea what part of the spectrum he's on,
and that I should be more sensitive to what he's going through. I'm beginning to think there's something
I could have done different, and if I really was being a butthole, I've always been insecure. I'm
quite the hideous woman. So I may have been super dramatic about the comments. I'm going to read this
reply from Rose Reader. Not the butthole. Autistic mother of an autistic son here. If he's sufficiently
functional to work a job without constant supervision, then he can learn that we don't need to comment on people's
appearances. My son has quite high needs and won't be able to work independently. But he knows that we
don't say negative things about how other people look. True. I don't think the problem is that your
coworker is autistic. I think the problem is that he's a butthole. Am I the butthole for laughing at my
future sister-in-law's request for our wedding? My future husband is 35 and I'm a 38-year-old woman.
We just got engaged a few months ago and are deep into the wedding planning process. We were over
having dinner at his parents' house this past weekend, and his sister, who's 40, asked how the
guest list was coming together. We said fine.
And my fiancé mentioned that all of his aunts, uncles, and cousins were on the guest list.
His sister asked about Cody and Maria and their children.
Cody and Maria?
For context, Cody and Maria are the friends of my future sister-in-law and future brother-in-law.
Their kids all go to the school together, and that's how they met.
They've become close friends as a result.
They're also from the same Middle Eastern country that my fiancé's family is from.
My fiancé and I have met them twice, and they're nice people.
We just don't have a relationship with them.
Our wedding is like 120 people, and we aren't going to invite people we hardly know.
My fiancé and I looked at each other and shrugged.
No, we hadn't considered them on the guest list.
Sorry.
His sister was outraged.
Cody and Maria are family.
How could we possibly consider not inviting them?
I let out a soft laugh and put my hand over my face,
because this just seemed so absurd to me.
which is where I might be the butthole.
My future sister-in-law began to lecture me on the culture that I'm marrying into.
I'm American.
And that in their Middle Eastern culture, close friends are family,
and that our guest list should include room for at least 10 to 20 friends of the siblings.
She said that my fiancé had the same thing for her wedding some 13 years ago.
My fiancée said that he invited two friends as opposed to 10.
He invited people that his sister had known for decades,
not people that we've met only two times.
And the difference was that their parents and her in-laws were paying for her 300-plus person wedding.
Meanwhile, their parents' financial situation has changed, so my fiance and I are covering the costs.
We explain that we don't have the budget to host a wedding that large, and so we want the people closest to us for our special day,
which does not include Cody and Maria.
My future sister-in-law shouted at us for disrespecting her and her husband by not inviting
their closest friends, and that I'm not worthy of bearing the family's surname. My future mother-in-law
and father-in-law tried to de-escalate the situation and offered to pay the difference in cost to allow
for this family of five to be invited to the wedding. My fiance and I are both foregoing, inviting
several friends to our wedding to make the numbers work. This just feels like a slap in the face
to bypass them for people we've literally met twice. We left shortly thereafter, and my future mother-in-law
sent a message to us later asking us to apologize to my future sister-in-law for laughing at her
request and to consider inviting Cody and Maria. We didn't respond. This top reply, not the
butthole. Sounds like a few more people shouldn't be invited. True! Am I the butthole for getting my
co-workers in trouble over a sandwich? My co-workers threw away my lunch today and I'm still mad about it.
So here's what happened. I get to work this morning and
put my lunchbox in the fridge. About 11 a.m., I get an email that my manager is ordering
takeout if anyone is interested. I reply to the group that I brought a lunch today, but thanks
for asking. Lunch is typically 12 to 1 p.m., but I'm a health care provider and almost never
actually get a lunch break. Today was no different. Between appointments, charting, phone calls,
etc., I did not get a lunch. At 1.30, we get a team's message that the fridge is going to be
cleaned out, and anything unmarked would be thrown away, suggesting we go grab anything we don't
want tossed. I'm with patience at this point, and I don't see the message for a while, but I don't
think much of it when I do. Then, around 5 p.m., I finally finished with appointments, and I'm starving.
Most everyone has left for the day, so I go to the kitchen to grab my lunchbox so I can eat
while I write my notes. It's then I discover that whoever cleaned the fridge
opened my lunchbox and threw away my sandwich. They put my now empty bag back in the fridge
still unzipped. Now, I could have understood if my lunch was just loose. But to take my lunch bag out of the
fridge, unzip it, dig through it and take my sandwich out of it and throw it away. Plus,
the whole office was on the email that I replied to stating that I'd brought a lunch and I wouldn't
be ordering food. So it's not crazy there was a lunchbox in the fridge. Now I'm starving,
still have at least an hour of work left to do, and I'm just generally angry that someone
thought it was okay to open my lunchbox. Not to mention the cost of food, I made myself one of those
fancy sandwiches on nice bread with fixins, so it wasn't a super cheap lunch. So I text my manager
and explained what happened, and I felt that it was inappropriate for my lunch bag to have been
opened and my lunch thrown away.
She replied agreeing with me and apologized.
She said that she would talk with those that had cleaned the fridge and make it clear that
should not have happened.
Now some of my coworkers are annoyed with me because the people that cleaned the fridge were just
trying to help and I shouldn't have gotten them in trouble.
And while I can appreciate their efforts to make the fridge clean and more usable for all
of us, I really can't wrap my head around thinking it was okay to open someone's lunchbox
and throw away its contents.
I also don't know if it's an overreaction, but part of me feels like it was an invasion of my privacy to go through my lunchbox.
I finally got home a few hours later and was able to eat dinner, so I'm less hangary now,
but I honestly feel like it was just not okay that they did that.
So am I the butthole for telling my boss?
O.P., I wouldn't say the people who cleaned the fridge were just trying to help.
They were either very stupid, very mean, or they stole an ate your sandwich.
All three options, they can go screw them.
That was our slash am I the butthole.
