Starting point is 00:00:56 Find your advisor at IG PrivateWealth.com. Welcome to R. slash am I the devil where O.P. bullies his own daughter. Am I the butthole for making my daughter sing at our Cruises talent show? To be clear, we are not stage parents. Our children tell us their interests and we support them in pursuing it. So before you read the rest, this is not some effort to exploit our kid or make her a star. My wife and I are on a cruise with our two kids, a 13-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy. My daughter, Allison, is an aspiring singer and has been taking voice lessons for the past year.
Starting point is 00:01:33 One night, my wife saw they had a karaoke night and asked Allison if she wanted to try. She said yes. We went to karaoke, which was a dance floor in the middle of one of the cruises bars slash restaurants. And she chose Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, one of the songs she studied with her teacher. Instead of our advice to leave it all on the stage, she instead clammed up and mumbled her way through the song. Nothing like what she can do. I was really disappointed in her that she decided to take the cowardly route and backed out of giving a full performance. When we got back to the hotel room, I told her that. From what I remember I said, it was something like, Allison, what was that?
Starting point is 00:02:14 You know you can do better than that. The night ended on a sour note, as my wife and I more or less repeated the same and we all went to bed. The next morning, things were kind of tense in the air, and my wife and I had, a long talk with her about pushing her sound out and not shrinking away. My wife had our daughter go stand on our room's balcony and sing a song facing away from us or facing the ocean, a kind of pep talk lesson to embrace her voice and use it. A night or so later, we found out that the crews also hosts a talent show, and we recommended it for Allison to try it again, this time an opera song she's been studying. She said yes, but I want to make sure that I'm not the
Starting point is 00:02:57 butthole. You know what this is like? This is like the dad of the kid on the sports team, and every time the team loses, the dad makes the kid like run laps around the house as punishment. You call that winning. No son of mine's gonna be a loser. O.P., you straight up suck. She's 13, quite possibly the most awkward age in all of human lifespan, and she's getting up in front of a bunch of strangers, mostly adults, mind you on a cruise ship. Quite possibly her first performance ever and you're punishing her for it? Jeez, give her a break. She's 13, man. Am I the butthole for not congratulating my friend for getting a conditional offer at a top university? We have a main friend group of four people. We were in school together before this girl, Amy, dropped out. I've known her since we were 12.
Starting point is 00:03:45 She's always struggled in school. She's got mental health issues and autism, so she needed extra help. Then COVID started, and she wasn't able to do online learning, as we didn't do Zoom classes, they just sent the materials for us to teach ourselves. She's also been in care on and off, so was stressed and kind of gave up on trying. Meanwhile, the rest of the group and I have tried extremely hard. We studied for hours, but we weren't accepted to any colleges. Barely anyone did, even those with the top grades, so my friends and I were disappointed. Tuesday last week, Amy put a screenshot in the group chat of her getting a conditional offer to a top score. school. Literally the top ten. She'd been saying about wanting to go on to university, but since
Starting point is 00:04:32 she didn't complete school, it didn't seem to be possible. I asked her what the conditions are. They asked her to fill out some more forms and take an assessment thing they made, since they wanted to give her a chance due to her essay, and her interview being really good, and her work and volunteering experience, despite not meeting their typical entry requirements. I said, oh, cool. I assumed she'd wouldn't get in still. She posted about her excitement about the conditional offer. Not many people responded to her post, except a family member and one of her other friends, and a few of her followers who don't know her in real life. I thought, how embarrassing for her it would be if she didn't get in. Until Friday, it's confirmed she's accepted and will be starting there. They talked about giving her
Starting point is 00:05:19 extra support and stuff, so me and my friends are secretly thinking this is really unfair to her and other applicants if she needs extra support that she's clearly not intelligent enough to be on the course. We didn't say this to Amy's face, though. Today we were going to a party, but yesterday night she messaged that she can't come. She was really excited about the party, so I was confused, and I asked her about it. She said she's feeling quite depressed. I asked her why. She said that she's getting a bit of imposter syndrome from getting into a good school,
Starting point is 00:05:52 and she kind of just feels like being alone right now. I said, maybe she should turn it down. She said she doesn't want to because she knows it's a great opportunity to progress, and this was a one in a million chance for her. She said she just feels like everyone's not happy for her. I said, of course people are happy for her. She said barely anyone congratulated her on such a big achievement, and she feels like it's because everyone thinks she's dumb.
Starting point is 00:06:17 I said, people are probably shocked she applied in the first place. That's all. And it was a conditional offer. She said, even after it was approved, no one congratulated her. I asked her why it's so important to her to be praised for her wins. She said that everyone who got into less prestigious universities got praised, and I said they worked harder to be there. I can just feel the jealousy radiating off of this post.
Starting point is 00:06:45 Opie clearly thinks that her friend is stupid, and Opie also seems like she might be ablest if she thinks that autistic people aren't smart enough to go to school. But from what I'm seeing, she is smart enough. Sounds like she got in through her essay alone, which means she's probably an amazing writer. So clearly, this school accepts people on grades and also an alternative route, such as writing essays. Am I the butthole for telling my wife that leaving her used pad in my brother's place was inappropriate? My wife and I were invited to my brother's 31st birthday. He's single and lives alone in his apartment. So to give you the heads up, my wife and him don't get along so well, but they can be civil enough to sit at
Starting point is 00:07:29 the same table. So we went and had dinner and talked, and everything was going well. No argument, nothing, till after my wife went to use the bathroom. Later, my brother went to use the bathroom, then came back looking pissed. He kept giving me and my wife looks, but I didn't know what was going on until he pulled me aside before we left and told me that my wife had left her used pad in his bathroom. I was shocked and didn't know what to say because this felt highly inappropriate. He said he didn't appreciate what my wife did and that it was a sign of disrespect towards him. I apologized profusely and said I didn't know about it. He asked me to speak to her or she wouldn't be welcome in his place anymore. We got in the car and I asked my wife
Starting point is 00:08:13 about it. She nonchalantly said there was nothing wrong with what she did and that my brother was being ridiculous. I kind of flipped and told her it was very inappropriate for her to leave her used pad in his place, even if it was in the bathroom and in the trash can, because it made him uncomfortable. She yelled, asking what she was supposed to do, and I told her she could have taken it with her and thrown it outside, not in his bathroom. That's my brother's place, and he told me how he felt about it. She yelled at me, calling my brother an in-cell and me a butthole for getting in her face about it. She said, she needed to use the bathroom, and it's not like the pad was visible since she dumped it in the trash can. At home, we still argued about it, and she kept on calling me and my brother names. She's
Starting point is 00:09:00 currently not speaking to me and is avoiding me entirely. Regardless, I feel like it's his place, and he gets to express what makes him uncomfortable in it. The pad is too gross to be in a trash can. It exceeds the grossness of normal trash. So, O.P.'s wife is supposed to just, what, carry it around with her, stuff it in her pockets? So too gross for the trash, but not gross enough for her to carry it around in her hand? Or throw it outside? Even worse. What, is she supposed to throw it in his yard? That's so gross and trashy. I think it's pretty clear who the real villain is between the wife and the brother not liking each other. The wife seems to be just a normal person. And and the brother is indeed a whiny in-cell.
Starting point is 00:09:45 If he's this shocked about a pad in his bathroom, wait until he finds out people have been shitting in his bathroom too. Can you imagine someone coming into your house and pooping? Also, Opie posted an edit, which just makes him sound like a smug-know-it-all. I can't give info or expand on what was seen, but I can tell you that the trash can does not have a lid. It's not like one of those trash cans that have a lid on top, and you can push it. What I want to emphasize on is the fact that as guests, we should respect people's homes
Starting point is 00:10:16 and not argue about what makes them uncomfortable. He said it made him uncomfortable, and that should, in my opinion, be acknowledged. O.P., what about what makes your wife uncomfortable? Does she get any kind of say in this at all? Or is the only person who matters your brother? Am I the butthole for wanting a tenant out because their struggle is causing me anxiety? We rent out an annex attached to our house. It's a small, nice place. The rent is low compared to market price. We've had the same tenant for many years, a single person working, quiet, clean. We would chat if we met in front of our house. They would sometimes look after our pets. Good tenant, full trust. At some point, we noticed this person changed behavior, started being reclusive, quiet. It was obvious because we could hear this person live a normal life before. We would ask if everything was okay, but they avoid.
Starting point is 00:11:09 avoided giving a meaningful answer. Okay, fair enough, we're not friends nor family. At some point, we suspected work trouble. Then, a few months later, they admitted they were let go. We could see anxiety had taken over, and their mental health was declining. We offered a bit of help with rent, but ask that they take care of themselves and get some help, because it's obvious they need it. In the meantime, we found out that people close to them gave up on them because they flat out refused to get any help. Then the person had a death in the family, and this made them sink even further. A few months pass. We meet again, and they still suffer in silence, are now on unemployment benefits, applying for jobs, but they are and appear miserable. I don't see this person
Starting point is 00:11:55 being employed anytime soon. I tried talking to them several times, suggesting it's time to get help, that it's okay, they made it through tough times, and this would be difficult for anyone. That's why we have specialists, doctors, etc. But nothing's getting through. This has been going on for almost all of this year. At this point, my anxiety is really setting in. I worry every day, although I cannot be any more intrusive. My back is in knots. I need an occasional Xanax. All sorts of scenarios are going through my head. I want this person to sort their life out and get better, but it's costing me my mental health. I would like to ask them to leave. They have benefits that will. They have benefits that last several months. We helped in the past already when they had a family emergency.
Starting point is 00:12:41 We lowered the rent so they could travel, so we're really not butthole landlords. Am I the butthole for wanting them out? I would give them ample time to find something else. So your landlord is paying their bills and is not causing you any trouble, but you still want them gone because they're not happy all the time? O.P., man, get over yourself. How can you possibly make their depression about you? Am I the butthole for? for telling my girlfriend that she needs to shave her legs? Hear me out before you all throw the misogynist card. As background information, my girlfriend is very high maintenance.
Starting point is 00:13:17 She doesn't wear makeup or do fancy things with her hair, but she's always spending money on creams and oils and masks or whatever to put on her face and skin. She says it helps moisturize and keep her skin and pores healthy. Honestly, I say that anything from health stores and brands is a waste of money, But it's her money, so I don't say much. She's also very controlling when it comes to me in my apartment. My housemates and I are very busy, and we hardly have guests over to entertain them.
Starting point is 00:13:46 It's not like there's dead rats in the corners of the place, but she doesn't like the occasional sweater thrown on the floor or dishes in the sink, and she's always telling me to stop doing that. So we were invited to my friend's wedding, and because I live much closer to the venue, she stayed the night. Q complaining about dishes, paper on the floor, etc. I had a long day, so I decided not to shower, which again she complained about, but let it go since I told her I'd shower in the morning.
Starting point is 00:14:15 In the morning, when we were getting ready, I decided not to shower because I overslept and thought that washing my face and thought that putting some cologne and deodorant on would be more than sufficient. My girlfriend obviously protested saying that was gross, so I got pretty annoyed and told her that it's gross that she doesn't shave her legs because it's a huge turnoff and it's disgusting. It's bad enough that she doesn't wear makeup or heels or normal things girls are supposed to do. I know I can't force her to do anything, but it's expected, you know? We're going to a damn wedding.
Starting point is 00:14:48 Things escalated and she got mad, saying that not showering was not the same thing as not shaving, especially since guys are not expected to shave. But societies already made that call. She then changed her clothes from slacks in a blouse to a dress that went to her knee, making her legs even more obvious. My mom says that I'm the butthole and is siding with my girlfriend. This is ridiculous. Am I the butthole? All right, first off, I got to say, going, what, this is the third day without a shower, two or three days without a shower, and then going to a wedding is gross.
Starting point is 00:15:23 That's the real gross thing here. You can't mask your stinky pits and unwashed butthole with cologne, dude. Man, you can't win with this guy. He calls her high maintenance, but apparently he wants her to be even more high maintenance by shaving her legs and wearing heels and doing all that like dolled up stuff. So like, what's the deal, dude? Do you like the high maintenance stuff or do you not? Because you're asking for it and you're also complaining about it. That was our slash am I the devil.
