Welcome to R.S. Am I the Devil, where O.P. believes that he's the world's greatest writer,
when in reality he's just an insufferable butthole. Our next Reddit post is from Great American Book Club.
A couple of months ago, I, a 32-year-old man, lost my job. It was expected, and I honestly was excited about it
because my work-life balance wasn't great. And my 28-year-old girlfriend makes more than enough to support us both.
I decided I would use at least the summer to return to a passion project of mine,
a piece of genre-bending fiction that I hadn't touched in a decade.
My girlfriend knows me.
She understands that I was never happy in management,
that I have an ability and talent for language that will one day provide for us both.
But ever since June, she's been badgering me about finding a job, any job.
Again, we're not poor.
This disagreement is becoming a daily battle.
She cites saving for a house in one.
wedding, I tell her that three months dedicated to my work is more of an investment than three
months stocking shelves at Costco could ever be, and that to enter back into the workforce now at 32
would be to give up on my dreams forever. She claims to believe in me. She reads my stuff and tells me
it's brilliant, and so do many others. Yet she still insists that I must spend 40 hours a week
laboring for someone else. And now it's getting to the point where I can't even sit down to write
without her doubt intruding.
Doubt about the power of my work
and doubt about our relationship.
Am I the wrong one here?
Working on my novel,
I finally feel like myself again
for the first time in a decade.
And I don't want to give that up.
I can't write at my peak
while working a full-time job,
but I don't want to give up
on an eight-year relationship either.
I think the real problem in this post
isn't so much the butthole behavior
because taking three months off
versus the girlfriend wanting him to work
during those three months,
It's kind of like a, like, I can see the argument each side is making.
The real problem is how delusional O.P is.
He thinks he's going to transform the world.
He's going to release the next Game of Thrones.
A book more popular than the Bible.
Okay.
Man, there's more of this guy.
This dude has his head so far up his own ass.
Listen to this guys.
I'm in the midst of serializing what is the best thing I've ever written on Substack.
and I've been publishing to crickets.
For those who don't know,
Substack is just a place
where you can publish your own works online.
Meanwhile, thousands of people
who picked up a pen for the first time in their lives last summer
are accumulating thousands of followers for drivel.
Usually some thematically hollow memoir
about divorce or parenthood drowning in clichés.
No grasp of tone, cadence, or voice.
Yet these frauds are making a career off the written word.
And then there's me,
with a background and formal education in the English language,
writing in my own invented genre,
with a deep understanding of literary conventions,
and nothing.
Makes me wonder if this optimized algorithmic world
is the final nail in the coffin for art.
When the mommy memoir is making more than Morrison ever did,
we're cooked.
I'll give you guys a little bit of insight into the world of algorithms.
People think of the algorithm as some like machine,
some like really complicated thing of code.
No, the algorithm is just,
people, man. Algorithms don't really care about who you are or what you want. It just wants to know
what people like to consume. And it's like, oh, people are they like this, so I'll serve people
this. It's really that simple. So if the algorithm hates your stuff, that means people hate your
stuff. This keeps getting better. Oh my God. Okay, guys, someone dug up O.P.'s actual ride. You guys,
got to listen to this. I ended up in line behind a single girl. I couldn't see her face,
of course, but she was undeniably stylish like a brats doll. Her white pants coalesced around a
galactic ass, and her mahogany curls cascaded over her exposed shoulders like flowing water
off an edinic cliffside. Pink ribbons adorned her hair like that perfect present on Christmas
morning. I nearly collapsed from the radiance emanating before me.
A pulcritudinous brunette with contoured bronze skin and deep, dark eyes like two cups of hot chocolate.
Wearing a frown across her face, so devastating, it nearly spurred me to seize the pizza cutter and take it to the employee's throat.
Her touch alone was enough to send me back to my high school auditorium as my best friend launched into, if I only had a heart, as Sarah's delicate finger crept higher and higher up my taut thigh.
soft as a whisper in the starless night, yet powerful enough to conjure up a full moon.
This is the first time in my life I've ever heard the word pulkratudanus.
I had to look it up. It means physically beautiful.
So O.P. is definitely one of those guys who writes with thesaurus.com open on one of the tabs.
This writing sucks balls.
I think just outside of it being a really obscure word, pulkratutinus is also really just kind of like an ugly word.
As someone who's never heard it before, I assumed it has.
It had something to do with death because I do know the word sepulker, which is like a fixture of a graveyard.
So sepulchre, polkratudinist probably has something to do with, you know, dying or bones or death or
decay or something.
So, I don't know.
Does anyone else think it's a pretty word or does anyone else know that word?
Literally anyone in the comments?
The whole point of writing is to convey meaning, not to confuse people and be like, yo, I got to stop reading this terrible book so I can look up this word.
Our next Reddit post comes from potential growth.
I, a 32-year-old man, have a 28-year-old male friend who's the best-looking man.
Seriously, he makes Chris Hemsworth look ugly.
I've been struggling being his friend.
He's been undermining me for years.
Nights out, stealing all the girls.
Shopping, staff throw themselves at him.
On the street, women have asked me for a picture together with him.
Let's call him Jack.
I've been told that I'm not bad-looking, but the fact remains.
I'm a six out of ten at best. But Jack is a ten out of ten. As much as he's a bro, knowing him is a
liability. It's been eating into my life a lot, but one area where I'm doing well is the gym.
I go about four times a week, and there's someone I'm into who goes to the gym. Let's call her
Jim Cutie. She's in her mid to late 20s. I've been going to the gym for over six months.
I've seen her for a couple of months. I know her name. She and I flirt. I've spotted her and we
banter. It's gotten to the stage that I'm on the verge of asking her out. I've been trying to
keep Jack from the gym. But last week, he was staying down my way and asked if he could go with me.
Now, the time he mentioned was not my usual time, and Jim Cutie doesn't usually go, so I thought,
why not? So he went. I was having a good session. Then, suddenly, I see Jim Cutie. She's going
on a different day because she's going away for work tomorrow and she's getting a workout in.
I'm thinking things are going good. The time's good.
to ask Jim Qudy out. Fing Jack walks over and Jim Qudy is gobsmacked. Like I've gone from
mate to doesn't exist. I see them flirting so I just walk off and go to get changed. As I'm getting
changed, he comes back in and I see him sorting his phone out. I ask him what happened and he said
Jim Qudy gave him her number. I'm so speechless, I just stop talking and carry on getting
changed. I'm driving us back from the gym, and he's talking about gym cutie and them going on a date.
After a while, I just effing snap and rip into him, saying he's a prick and he's cock-blocked me and
stole my girl. He's trying to act all apologetic and say that he had no idea, and I just drop him off
home and tell him to get out. I am so down. I haven't been to the gym this week. I also haven't spoken
to Jack. A couple of days ago, Jack rings me out of the blue, asking me if I'm okay, and he hasn't
from me and Jim Cutie hasn't seen me at the gym. He's worried about me. He says that he's got a peace
offering and he says he's sending me an Instagram profile and says to look at it before I say anything.
I look at what he sent me and it's a woman. She's a little chubby, not ugly or fat, and doesn't
look like she goes to the gym. She also looks a bit nerdy. I'm like, what the F is this? And he says it's a
friend of Jim Cudy. I'm angry because it's obvious him and Jim Cudy have been talking. He says,
yeah, me and Jim Cootie went out for coffee and we spoke. She feels bad that I liked her and that she didn't
like me and she thought that I would like a friend, a 35 year old woman. Jack is trying to sell me on this
chick like, bro, she sounds nice, a nerd like you, loves cats and is a geek. If it was a few years
ago, I'd probably be interested, but I've been trying to distance myself from that sort of girl.
Apparently, him and Jim Cutie have spoken to the girl, and she's interested in me adding her and going on a date.
Apparently, Jim Cutie's been really selling me.
I effing rip into him.
I tell him he's a twat for doing this and setting me up on a pity date and sealing the girl I like.
He's all like, bro, chill and thinks it's a good thing.
That this girl is waiting for me to add her.
I tell him to leave me alone.
Am I wrong for ripping him for setting me up on a pity date?
The top comment says it best.
When girls pass over me because my friend's more attractive, that's outrageous, and I'm pissed off at my friend.
But when I pass over a girl because her friend's more attractive, that's acceptable, and everyone should understand my point of view.
Our next Reddit post is from Typical Mobile.
I, a 27-year-old woman, feel like I'm losing my mind.
My best friend just called me delusional and threatened to distance herself from me if I go through with this.
So I need an outside perspective.
For the past year, I've worked closely with David, a 38-year-old man.
He's an assistant manager at the retail pharmacy where I work as a pharmacy technician.
He's married to Sarah, and they have two toddlers.
His locker is covered in drawings from his kids, and he talks about his family constantly.
On paper, he's the ultimate family man.
But over the last six months, I feel like our relationship has changed.
It started in November when my dog passed away.
He noticed I was crying in the break room, went down the street,
and brought me a vanilla latte and a muffin.
He sat with me for 10 minutes and just listened to me, Vint.
No one else at work even noticed I was upset, but he did.
Since then, we've developed a routine.
Whenever we pass each other by the stock room,
he gives me this specific warm smile.
A few weeks ago, during a hectic Monday rush,
I made a joke to a difficult customer that fell flat,
but I looked across the pharmacy counter and David was smiling and shaking his head.
It felt like an inside joke just between us.
Then there was the team dinner last month at a packed, deafening restaurant.
Because it was crowded, David sat directly across from me.
At one point, the room got incredibly loud.
David leaned all the way across the table to hear what I was saying.
While I was talking, he looked directly at my lips, smiled, and nodded along.
A few of our coworkers at the end of the table actually stopped talking and just stared at us because it looked so intense.
It felt like the rest of the room completely melted away.
The biggest thing happened last Friday.
We were staying late to finish checking in an inventory shipment.
The store was closed.
He walked over to check my progress,
and as he leaned over my shoulder to look at the terminal,
his sleeve brushed against my arm.
He didn't pull away immediately.
He stayed...
I'm sorry.
I hope he is completely delusional.
He didn't pull away immediately.
He stayed there for at least three seconds.
Before he clocked out,
he looked at me and said, don't stay too late, Shelby, we need you around here.
I felt a physical spark.
I was convinced that he's trapped in a passionless marriage,
and his kindness is his subconscious way of crying out for a connection.
He always remembers exactly how I take my coffee.
Men don't pay that much attention to a woman unless they're deeply attracted to her.
My plan is to ask him to grab drinks after our shift this Thursday
and gently lay my cards on the table.
I want to tell him that I know he feels the connection.
too, and that I'm willing to wait for him. My best friend snapped at me, saying,
Shelby, he's a nice guy. He brought you coffee once. You're being delusional, and you're about to
ruin your job based on a sleeve brushing against your arm? Am I misreading this, or am I the
butthole for saying how I feel? Misinterpreting a sleeve brushing against your arm
honestly sounds like the kind of insane overreaction, delusional output.
that you would expect out of a like a 14-year-old dork who's never talked to a girl in his life.
And then, you know, the school cheerleader accidentally touches his arm and he's like,
oh my God, are we getting married?
Am I going to lose my virginity tonight?
Having this reaction out of a 27-year-old woman is just bonkers.
This woman's really about to blow up her job and potentially a marriage over a sleeve-brushing incident.
I will say in her defense, the one thing that does stick out as possibly showing interest
is that the guy knows how she takes her coffee.
However, I'm super into tea,
so if I worked for a person who was into tea
and liked their tea a certain way,
I'd probably remember that too.
It just is a little bit rare for guys to notice that type of thing.
But every other sign that she's interpreted
is just straight up delusional.
The reason why he was looking at her lips in the loud restaurant
was because he was trying to hear what she had to say
and he was kind of lip reading.
Our next credit post is from deleted.
I'm a 60-year-old woman,
and I left a family vacation early
and need to know if I overreacted, and if so, how bad.
I have three grown children.
Zach, his wife, Stacey, Jason, his wife Allison, and Hannah.
Zach and Stacey have three girls, ages 11, 9, and 5.
Jason and Allison have two girls, ages 2 and 15 months.
I work a lot, so I don't get to see my kids and granddaughters as much as I want.
We all live in the same area, but everyone always seems so busy.
Stacey and Allison planned and booked a two-week trip for the entire family,
And while I appreciate the work they put into it, I just wish they put more thought into it.
They didn't confirm dates with Hannah, who wasn't able to make the trip due to a promotion at work,
and the trip coincided with her birthday. They picked a two-story cabin.
I know finding a place big enough for everyone with only one level would be a challenge,
but I saw that it was an option. I have bad knees and had problems on all the stairs.
Stairs to get to the cabin, stairs to get to the bedroom, stairs on both back decks.
The kids. Now, this is where I might be overreacting. I know I don't spend as much time with my
granddaughters as I should, but like I said, everyone including me is always busy, but the kids
wanted nothing to do with me. They would need something opened, and I would go do it for them,
and they would just run off to their parents or the older girls. They would even go to their
aunt or uncle over me. Now, I do want to acknowledge that they do a lot together as a big group,
so much so that it's like they all have an extra set of parents, and I love that for all of them.
They're all very happy, well-behaved kids, but they haven't been socialized.
We got to the cabin on Friday, and I left this morning.
I just couldn't take feeling like an outsider on my own family's vacation.
My oldest son called me and asked why I left, and when I told him, he said some pretty
hurtful things and told me to get over myself.
He said the girls were sad, but I really can't imagine them even noticing.
O.P. is incredibly stupid. Little kids are like mirrors. They just reflect back all the love you put into them. If the kids want nothing to do with their grandmother, it's because the grandmother isn't really spending quality time with them. It's not hard to get a five-year-old to like you, you guys. It really isn't. You just play with them, let them talk to you about whatever they're interested in. Just, you know, spend time with them and show them love, which O.P., I guarantee you. I promise you, O.P. is not doing any of that.
