Welcome to R slash am I the devil, where Opie believes that his wife with a freshly broken spine should do more chores around the house. Am I the butthole for asking my wife to do more around the house? I'm a 45-year-old guy. My wife is 40, and we have two kids, both early teenagers, and we both work full-time. Previously, we split a lot of chores evenly. She's great
Starting point is 00:01:47 at cooking, so she did more. I enjoy cleaning, so I did that more, and we split the rest evenly and the kids pitch in too. She has not been lucky, and recently she got into a really bad car crash about 20 months ago, and she broke her spine, hip, and leg. She was on heavy-duty pain killers for a while during healing. However, four months ago, the painkillers caused her to have a series of seizures. Probably should mention that these injuries from the crash have caused long-term chronic pain for her. She's legally disabled, and she now won't take any painkillers in case they start up again. Her choice, but it's relevant. One of the long-term effects of this is that she can't drive until 12 months being seizure-free,
Starting point is 00:02:30 and she has to commute to work using public transportation. Unfortunately, this is almost two hours each way, and there's no way around this. My job is just to help pay the bills, and honestly, I'm not a career person like she is. I work much shorter hours and less stressful work than hers, but a 30-minute drive in the opposite direction. Over the last few months, I've had to pick up a lot more around the house. She leaves so early from 6 a.m. to about 6.30 p.m. She has a very high-stress job, and she's the main breadwinner, so she doesn't want to change jobs. That means a lot of the things that she used to do falls on me now. Also, when she gets back, she often falls asleep by around 8. She's also, frankly, useless on weekends, only doing the bare minimum, like meal prep and laundry. She says it's because she's tired and in a lot of pain. We live in a very cold and wet area, and now she says the weather contributes to this too,
Starting point is 00:03:30 but we can't move right now. Over the weekend, I asked her to do more around the house. I really tried having to pick up everything myself. We got into a fight. She says we just need to let things go a bit more. Called me a perfectionist. This is a bit true. But I feel that she should be doing more around the house.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Things she used to handle, like picking up medication and shopping now falls on me too. Our nearest Walmart is a 15-minute drive from us. She's tired, I get it, but everyone is tired. I also understand that she's in pain, but I feel the accident was so long ago, she can't keep using this as an excuse. She should be able to drive in nine months ago, and she says that we just need to adapt to the new normal until then.
Starting point is 00:04:14 I might be the butthole for not being understanding of her needs, but I think she's the butthole for refusing to do more, especially on evenings and weekends. T, this is her fly. She broke her spine, hip, and leg. She's the main breadwinner. I cannot imagine how much work and surgery she would have to go through. May this love never find me.
Starting point is 00:04:39 This cannot possibly be real. My heart really goes out for this woman. She got stuck with a real dud. My wife is a real lazy bones. Dude, it's not lazy bones. It's literally broken bones. Our next Reddit post is from our slash relationship advice. How can I, a 39-year-old man, win my wife back, a 40-year-old woman?
Starting point is 00:04:59 My wife, Destiny, and I are not in a traditional marriage in the sense. We're not even officially married anymore. We put a front for our daughters who are 8 and 5. We had a great marriage, but unfortunately, her friend, Shannon, someone we both trusted, took advantage of me and ruined our marriage. Six years ago, I was going through a midlife crisis. I felt my wife didn't understand me. I barely had the time, and my wife wanted another baby, but I wasn't ready. I didn't express this to my wife and was just enjoying the passionate hugging like an idiot, but then she got pregnant again.
Starting point is 00:05:35 I was extremely depressed because I didn't want another kid. I think Shannon picked up on this and saw a potential victim. My wife didn't notice I was depressed, and I felt unseen. Shannon and I began an affair, and I eventually left. my wife for Shannon. I see now how Shannon was incredibly manipulative and abusive towards me. She had us move six hours away from my little girls and because of Shannon I went almost three years without seeing my little girls. I missed my second daughter's birth and saw her once in two years. I ended things with Shannon after she ended up cheating on me. I moved back and wanted to be the father I should have been. I started seeing my kids more and I wanted my wife back. Eventually, she came up with an arrangement that would be better for the kids.
Starting point is 00:06:24 We move in together and split the bills. We're not together, so no kissing or intercourse. I can sleep around and date as I please, but she doesn't want to hear about it unless it gets serious. She will also sleep around, and that's her business. She has no interest in long-term relationships because she doesn't trust men or anyone now, but if that changes, she'll tell me. Because if she dates seriously, we've got to change our living arrangements. This is my only second chance to be in the kid's life.
Starting point is 00:06:53 She doesn't want me entering and exiting the kid's life as I please. If I enter, I stay in it and be a father. She doesn't realize the extent of Shannon's narcissistic behavior towards me because I wanted to see my daughters more than anything. No one-to-one hangouts. We can do group family hangouts, but that's it. It's been a little over a year with this arrangement, and I realize how much I love and miss her.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Just the little things when I get off work, if she worked from home that day, I have a plate already made that I just need to heat up. Her genuine kindness towards me and the children. Every day, I see the reason I fell in love with her in the first place. The other day, she was at the store, and I mentioned needing another Texan jersey, and she bought me one. I freaking love her. But when I say, let's try again, let's have a date, just the two of us, she shuts it down. Right now, she acts like that really nice co-worker in the office, whom you can tell is just a kind soul. I just want to have the privilege of being her husband again, even friend.
Starting point is 00:07:57 I love her from the bottom of my heart, and I hate that it got ruined because a narcissist prayed on me while I was going through a midlife crisis. Oh, the poor victim in this story, don't you just feel bad for O.P? He was manipulated, you guys, forced to move six hours away and a baby. abandon his kids. Yo, was he chained to the wall, handcuffed to a radiator? Apparently, when she cheated on him, he had no problem whatsoever leaving her. So theoretically, he could have also, you know, I don't know, been there for the birth of his daughter. This guy is so full of himself, and he's obviously trying to make the story sound as good as possible, but even through his own insanely filtered view, he still sounds like an insufferable butthole. It's not my fault that I cheated on my pregnant. wife, give me a break. Our next Reddit post is from R-slash, Am I the Butthole Relationships. Am I the Butthole for being jealous that a girl is sleeping with someone else? I'm a 24-year-old male, and I absolutely hate working at my job other than my coworkers. I've been there for about seven months now, and started noticing a girl that's there on our shift. Let's call her Ashley. She's 28. We work
Starting point is 00:09:09 third shift together, but never in the same area. Ashley and I have had quite a few conversations, and she has an amazing personality and is really beautiful too, on top of being sassy. She's pretty well liked by everyone. Since she started about two months ago, I and two others invited her to go to Waffle House on our lunch breaks, and she started to go with. We've exchanged socials and haven't stopped talking since. She's explained to me that she isn't looking for anything, because I've asked her if we could start talking when she gets her living situation figured out.
Starting point is 00:09:39 And while that hurt my feelings, I've tried not to let it bother me. We go out for coffee sometimes after work, but when she declines, I get a bit upset by it. And our days often don't line up, so on her days off, she completely ghosts me and won't open my messages both days. There's a reason as to why I'm a little upset by this. It's because a few nights ago, we were walking in together and started chatting before we clocked in. And I noticed a big, hickie on her neck. At first I couldn't tell because of the collar of her shirt, but when I figured it out, I said, looks like you were looking for something after all.
Starting point is 00:10:15 Ashley then seemed to get mad and told me that it's her business and not mine, then walked away. I couldn't help but feel so mad because it seemed like she lied to me in a way. I didn't really spend a lot of time talking to her, and she doesn't seem bothered by it at all. She hasn't told me any more context when I've asked if it was serious between them or just casual intercourse. I've been honest about my current situation that I'm trying to get my baby mama
Starting point is 00:10:40 to move out of the house, but let me keep my son. And she told me I need to focus on that instead of what she's doing or who she's doing. So now I'm left here wondering if I'm the butthole for being jealous. Ashley has told me that her ex was not the best and borderline abusive,
Starting point is 00:10:57 so she just wants to focus on herself and not a relationship, even though I know I can treat her better. So am I the butthole for being jealous she's sleeping with someone else? O.P., come on, man. She just friends zoned you, that's it. She lets you down easy.
Starting point is 00:11:12 She doesn't want to say, hey, I don't like your face. It's ugly to me. Or I don't like your personality. It sucks. Because that hurts people's feelings. So she threw out a, oh, well, you know, I'm not really looking for a relationship right now. To be polite. And you actually believed it.
Starting point is 00:11:28 You didn't understand that that's code for I don't want to date you, but I'm trying to be polite. Come on, O.P., are you really that dumb? Our next Reddit posts is from R slash Ask Men Advice. I found out that my girlfriend reads smut books with, sexual assault in them, a word starting with the letter R. I made a comment that she disagrees with. How do I get her to see my side? I basically said that the popularity of these books prove that women don't mind sexual assault if it comes from an attractive man. In fact, they literally get off on it. My girlfriend said that I was wrong and that obviously if she was assaulted in real life,
Starting point is 00:12:04 she would be just as traumatized by it regardless of whether the man was good looking or not. She made the argument that fantasy is separate from reality, and enjoying something in a book is different than being okay with it in real life. I asked her, in that case, why do these violent fantasies and books always have good-looking men specifically? She said it's because everyone, both men and women, want to fantasize about being with a person they find attractive. So I told her she proved my point. This stuff only becomes enjoyable when the person is good-looking. Again, she pushed back that fantasy is different from reality, and that in reality, it wouldn't matter what the person looks like, that the situation would be equally traumatic regardless.
Starting point is 00:12:46 How do I get her to see my points? Opie, I'm a big fan of video games, you know, like, the Witcher, World Warcraft, stuff like that. And the idea, the concept of like being a, you know, wizard or a warrior in a fantasy world is like really appealing. It's like sometimes I imagine what would it be like to be a wizard and like fight goblas and stuff. And it seems really cool because the fantasy is cool. But if you actually put me in that situation, and I have to fight like an orc that's charging at me with the battle axe or die, and the battle axe hits me and disembowls me and my intestines are spilling out, and I have to cast fireball or die, that's much less appealing.
Starting point is 00:13:23 I think at that point I would realize, oh yeah, okay, the reality actually sucks balls here. And let's not forget zombies and giant spiders, we've all imagined how we would fare in a zombie apocalypse. Admit it, we've all done it. While it's perfectly reasonable and okay to fantasize, oh yeah, I'd totally survive, I'd be a real badass. If you were actually in a zombie apocalypse, you would be completely miserable because it sucks balls. So what I'm trying to say here, O.P., is that the fantasy is very, very, very different from reality. You doofus. Our next Reddit post is from R slash board games.
Starting point is 00:14:02 My girlfriend just broke up with me over a board game. I'm not even joking. We were playing Settlers of Patan last night with another couple. She had the longest road. I had an oarport that she desperately needed. She offers me a deal, and I declined because it helps her more than me. She got silent. Scary silent.
Starting point is 00:14:22 After our friends left, she goes, You know what your problem is? You care more about winning an effing board game than making me happy. I laughed because I thought she was joking. She packed a bag and went to her sisters. Texted me this morning that she needs space to think. about our relationship. Over Catan. Am I insane or is she massively overreacting? We've been together three years and she's ending it over a trade in Catan. I genuinely don't know if this
Starting point is 00:14:50 is actually about the game or something deeper, but either way, what the F just happened? Okay, the only thing OP can see is the single straw and not the giant bale of hay that is about to break the camels back. Our next Reddit post comes from R-slash, Am I Wrong. Am I Wrong? Am I Wrong? for thinking it's funny that my wife just found the necklace I accused her of losing 11 years ago inside a coat that she forgot she owned. When we first got married, I bought her this necklace for our first anniversary. It wasn't super expensive, but it was really meaningful because it had our initials engraved on it and I had saved up for it. She loved it, wore it constantly. Then one day, maybe six months later, she couldn't find it. Looked everywhere. I helped her look. We
Starting point is 00:15:35 turned the house upside down. Nothing. I'll be honest, I was kind of a jerk about it. Not screaming or anything, but I made comments. Things like, I can't believe you lost it. That was a special gift. I wish you'd taken better care of it. She felt terrible. She cried about it. She even offered to pay for a replacement and I said, no, it's not about the money. It's about the sentiment. Which, in retrospect, was a pretty guilt-trippy thing to say. It became one of those things in our marriage. Every couple of years it would come up and I would make some comment about the lost necklace and she would get quiet and feel bad all over again. It was a sore spot. Last week, my wife was going through our coat closet during a seasonal clean out. She pulled out this long coat she hasn't worn in
Starting point is 00:16:22 years. She put her hand in the pocket and her face went white. She pulled out the necklace. She had put it in her coat pocket one day, probably to keep it safe while doing something with her hands and then never wore that coat again. It's been sitting in our closet for 11 years. She held it up and just looked at me. And I knew immediately that every comment I'd ever made about her losing it was about to come back at me full force. She's been wearing it every day since. And every time I look at it, she says, oh, this old thing, yeah, I had to find it myself after my husband guilt tripped me about it for over a decade. Am I wrong for thinking this isn't funny even though I was the one making her feel bad about it? And then someone found another story from O.P.'s account, which I'll read now.
Starting point is 00:17:09 Am I the jerk for what I did to a coworker 40 years ago that I still laugh about? This happened so long ago that I don't even remember why we didn't like each other. I just know that we had this low-key antagonistic thing going on. Can't even remember the co-worker's name, honestly. We were both bag boys at a supermarket, both late teens. What I did remember was that his parents were super strict about tobacco. Like absolutely no smoking allowed in that household. And as far as I knew, he didn't smoke at all. One payday, I picked up my check and bought myself two packs of cigarettes on the way out.
Starting point is 00:17:45 I quit smoking years ago, but back then I was a regular smoker. As I'm walking out, I see this guy standing in line to get his paycheck. His dad is standing right there with him. Something came over me. I stopped right next to him, held out one of the packs, and said loud enough for his dad to hear, Hey, here's that pack of cigarettes I owe you. He immediately started denying it, saying I didn't owe him anything. But his dad, the look on his dad's face.
Starting point is 00:18:12 He looked furious. I just kept walking. It was a complete dick move. Totally spur of the moment. I had no real reason to do it other than we didn't get along. But 40 years later, I still laugh when I think about the look on that kid's face. Am I the jerk? Ah, I see.
Starting point is 00:18:29 So when O.P.'s dishing it out. it's all fun in games. But when OP's on the receiving end, where's all the sympathy? Why are people being mean? That was our slash am I the devil. And if you like this content, be sure to follow my podcast
