Welcome to R-slash, Am I the Devil, where Opie's car gets vandalized and he 100% deserves it. Am I the butthole? for blasting my subwifers in my own parking spot during non-quiet hours at my apartment complex? So basically, my car is my life. I have a tuned Subaru Impreza RWX STI that is my hobby, my transportation, my life. And I'm more comfortable behind the wheel than I am in my own bed. It's not quite as fast as I want it, but it looks amazing and the sound system is seriously as good as it can be. I live in a large apartment complex in Tucson. I'm guessing probably 100 units or so. Not sure.
Starting point is 00:01:40 Anyways, the complex is really cool because a lot of places won't let you work on your car. Well, I can pay an extra premium every month to get a mechanic's spot under shade. It's an extra two bills a month, but so worth it. When I work on my car, I blast my system. It helps me think and focus. Also, important to note, our complex has quiet hours between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. I follow these to the letter, but I do need to work on my car, so some Saturdays and Sundays, I crank that from 801 a.m. to 9.59 p.m. I'm not breaking any rules at all. I moved in January, and this Sunday was apparently a major problem. I had two people ask me to turn it down.
Starting point is 00:02:26 I totally did, but one came back and said, it's not the volume. it's the base. Can I turn the base down? I said I would try to, but I guess that wasn't good enough because he came down a third time. Finally, I told him, I paid for the spot. I wasn't breaking any rules. I'd only be out there until 10 p.m. He said that his kids had to go to bed at 8.30, and the base from my car was rattling his walls. I told him I'd done my best to accommodate him, but I was done. He told me he'd call the police. He told me he'd call the police. who never showed, and talked to management. I just stopped responding to him and cranked my system to drown out his barking.
Starting point is 00:03:08 I worked on my car until 9.59 when I turned my system off. I got an email from my apartment manager asking if she should come by. She's really cool and I want to help her, but I feel like I'm paying extra for the mechanics spot. I'm not breaking any rules and that guy had no right to talk to me like that. She said that she managed a nice place and she's gotten complaint after complaint about my car. I told her I was sorry, but I was still well within my rights and not breaking rules. She asked me to please consider for her sake using headphones or earbuds if music is that important to me. I said I'd try.
Starting point is 00:03:45 I worked on my car all night last night and used earbuds and it just wasn't the same. I spent thousands of dollars and so much time to tune my system perfectly and to not use. use it when I want, sucks. I want to help her out. But am I even being a butthole in the first place? I have to point out the incredible, unbelievable hypocrisy and irony that he's willing to blast his music to the entire apartment complex for like 12 hours straight. But when some guy comes to him and says, hey, can you turn down the music for, I don't know, probably 30 seconds? He's like, he has no right to talk to me like that. Then OP posted an update. I guess since everyone thought I was the butthole, you'll be happy to know that my car got keyed. Yes, O.P., I am happy about that.
Starting point is 00:04:32 I'm so effing pissed because it wasn't even a month ago I drove it to California to get it repainted. And I came out this morning and it has key marks all up and down the side, some even down to the metal. I stopped playing bass in my mechanic spot, so no one had any right or reason to do this. This isn't a touch-up job either. This will have to be taken to metal and re-repe. primed for it to look right, and they don't value a 2001 WRX STI the same way that I do. This sucks so bad. T' this comment, technically, your neighbor's lease has no rule about not keying your car. That's karma, man.
Starting point is 00:05:12 Yeah, I always wonder when people like, I don't know, argue over parking spots in the parking lot. If you, you know, if you cut someone off in the parking lot and, ha ha, I got the spot first, what are you going to do about it? And then you walk off into the grocery store or whatever and leave your car. car behind, they know where your car is. They can just go key it or slash your tires or break your windshield or whatever. So getting into an argument with someone when you're standing in front of your car that you care a lot about is kind of asking for it. I don't want to, you know, promote crime here. But what do you expect, you dofus? I'll show you. I'll turn up my music when you're
Starting point is 00:05:48 criticizing me. Please don't do anything to my extremely important car when I leave it unattended for like 12 hours straight, sir, thank you. Our next Reddit post is from R-slash parenting. I have a daughter who's 18 and a son who's 27. He's been a creep to my daughter since she was 10. My daughter has begged me to kick him out since she was 14, but at the time I didn't see an issue, except him allegedly trying to watch her shower a few years back. At some point, I started looking for apartments for him, but there was no luck. We kicked him out around February. when my daughter called the cops on him for recording her underneath her door. We told him specifically that he's not allowed on the second floor, but he ignored my warnings.
Starting point is 00:06:35 After the cops were called, he was in the hospital for two weeks and spent a month in government housing, and after that, he spent two months back and forth in hotels while my husband and I found him a suitable apartment. My son is on the spectrum and is physically disabled, and has never worked a real job, so it was quite difficult. and expensive. My son was also picky and refused to move into one of the places we picked out for him because it was too small. My daughter nags me all the time, saying how I should stop providing for him, but I tell her it's because he's still my son. My son may not have friends or ambition in life, but he'll always be my son. She always tells me how I never protected her, and how she was
Starting point is 00:07:19 planning to run away and stay in a tent in the park or stay the night in one of her male's friends, places, but then the incident happened. She said that us paying for his apartment feels like a slap in the face to her because she was willing to go homeless, among other things. My daughter is a very bright and creative young woman, but she stopped going to school and stays cooped up in her room the entire day. Unfortunately, she doesn't have many friends. Sometimes she goes out and when I say I want to go out with her, she says she wants to go alone. Down in the comments, Limer trash really sums it up nicely. Sorry, if this is real, what the actual f*** is wrong with you? Right? I think that's what we're all thinking on this one. Am I the butthole for telling a friend that
Starting point is 00:08:07 her baby looks like an alien? My best friend of 15 years recently had a newborn baby boy. I went to visit her at the hospital. Her whole family was there, including her husband, or baby daddy, because they're not actually married. Side note, we had a fling in high school. Anyway, She asked me whether her baby was cute or not, and told me to be as honest as possible because she couldn't tell since, of course, it's her own baby. Honesty has always been a policy in our friendship. In the past, I've always been honest with her, like whether an outfit was ugly or a haircut was bad.
Starting point is 00:08:41 And she always admired that quality about me, so I thought, why not be honest about this, too? I told her that, at first, he looked kind of alien-ish, and that his head was a bit oversized. She laughed. Then my neurodivergent brain kind of got off track, and I went into detail about his bulging eyes, long arms, and double chin, among other things. I kind of lost it a bit, and by the end, she was in tears. I realized as she was holding him that she had really taken it to heart, and now I feel bad. She was pretty quiet at first, then later told me to leave the room. I felt so bad that she was literally sobbing at that point. Later that day,
Starting point is 00:09:23 I got a paragraph long text from her telling me she's never going to talk to me again, and that I went too far this time. She said that she thinks her baby is adorable, and that I was too brutal about her newborn blessing. Sure, I kind of feel bad, but she literally told me to be honest, and I did. I gave my two sins because she asked, and I don't think I should be blasted for telling the truth. Am I the butthole?
Starting point is 00:09:48 Here's two tips to give you about mothers and babies and all that type of thing. One, never ask a woman if she's pregnant or how far along she is or when her due date is or any of that stuff. Because there is a chance she is not pregnant. And in that situation, you have given this woman a core negative memory that she will never forget. So it's just not worth the risk. I have seen this happen. I've seen someone ask someone else. How far along are you?
Starting point is 00:10:13 And the woman said, oh, I'm not pregnant. And you could feel the temperature change in the room. I strongly recommend against it. Secondly, if someone shows you a picture of their baby, just say, hey, that's a cute baby. That's all you got to do, man. That's all they want from you. That's all you got to say. Just say, ah, super cute.
Starting point is 00:10:31 And you're done. Unless you want to get strangled, don't criticize someone's newborn baby. I have kind of a funny story about this. I was born naturally. And a baby's skull isn't very hard. It's kind of soft when it's born. So, when I emerged into the world, my head was rathes. cone shaped because of the squeezing out process, I suppose. And my grandmother, my mother's mother,
Starting point is 00:11:00 was in tears because her grandson, her first grandson ever had a cone head. And she was so deeply worried about her grandson growing up and being teased and made fun of for having a cone head. And my mother, who had just given birth, had to comfort her mother and say, listen, this thing happens. The head will return to its natural shape soon. Don't freak out. It's totally normal. And luckily, my mother was right, my head turned to a mostly normal shape, I like to think, and I am no longer a cone head. Am I the butthole for accidentally deleting my co-worker's account and files off the shared work computer? For context, we both work at our university's IT department, and all the student workers, about six of us,
Starting point is 00:11:44 share the same two computers. This coworker and I typically use the same better PC in the cubicle, and we work different hours. It's also happening. during our school's final week too. I was trying to get my AirPods to connect to the PC, but the Bluetooth didn't work on the PC, so I thought re-imaging the computer would do the trick, because that's what we do when something like that is broken. Reimaging is basically wiping the computer and taking it back to its original state. This, however, did not fix the Bluetooth issue and also deleted everyone's accounts and stuff downloaded onto the computer. My co-worker, who got really upset about it, complained to our manager saying, I shouldn't have done this, and all their stuff was gone off the PC,
Starting point is 00:12:28 and it took them over an hour to sign in and re-download everything again. I tried to tell my manager that it's not my fault they had stuff saved locally when it should be in the cloud. I tried to make light of the situation by putting up a picture of a meme that I made that said, me when the desktop gets re-imaged, and a guy with a grumpy face. However, this made the person even more mad, and now they won't talk to me. And I heard they brought it to someone above our manager now. I'm worried I'm going to get in trouble for this, even though I was just trying to do my job fixing the Bluetooth on our computer. Yo, this guy's in tech support?
Starting point is 00:13:06 He helps people with their computer? This reminds me of a comic I saw online recently about a woman who was carrying a bag of trash to the curb, and then trash juice dripped on the person's phone. and the next panel was them with their foot amputated. That's basically what O.P. did here. O.P. has one tiny little fixable problem and decides to nuke the entire computer. Am I the butthole for feeling bad that my marriage announcement was stolen? So for years now, I've been saying that I don't want a wedding because they're so stressful
Starting point is 00:13:40 and expensive and have so many traditions rooted in outdated beliefs. My alternative plan is to take my partner and my best friend, who's a photographer, to somewhere like Yellowstone National Park or the Redwoods, and get some really cool wedding photos. And then send out cards to everyone saying, Surprise, I'm married, come celebrate with us at a reception. Back in May, it's currently July, I was at my friend Sarah's college graduation party,
Starting point is 00:14:05 and the topic of weddings came up. For context, the friend graduating is the same best friend who's a photographer, and a mutual friend, Brittany of ours, whom we've both known for years, was part of the conversation. I told them about my idea to elope in the woods somewhere and surprise everyone with the reception and Brittany thought that it was hilarious. Fast forward to today and I opened Facebook to see a post from Brittany saying, surprise, we're married. Thank you Lord for blessing me with such a kind, loving, and gentle man. Huge thanks to Sarah for taking our pictures. P.S. We've been married for two
Starting point is 00:14:39 months now. And then there was a photo shoot done by Sarah. My first thought was WTF? Because this is exactly what I wanted to do, and I've been saying to people for years. She not only stole my idea, but used the exact same photographer and even the words that I wanted to say. I texted Sarah, whom I've been friends with for 15 years, and asked her about Brittany's situation. She said that she came up with the idea because she didn't want a big wedding and asked Sarah to take the pictures. I said, you know I've been talking about doing this exact thing for years, and that I literally mentioned it with Brittany and Sarah at Sarah's graduation party in May. Sarah said she doesn't think Brittany meant to steal anything,
Starting point is 00:15:24 and it's really not that deep, especially since I'm single right now, so it'll be a while before I'm thinking about marriage again anyways. I don't even want to talk to Brittany about it because I don't want to rain on her happy moment and make it about me when she's celebrating her marriage. I feel so dumb and upset for talking about my. plans that I was excited about. And it feels like now, if I do this thing, I've been wanting to do for years, it'll look like I'm the one copying Brittany, and that's kind of shitty to do, in my opinion. So, am I the butthole for being upset? O.P. literally thinks she invented eloping. A loping has been
Starting point is 00:16:04 around for a long time. I don't know why O.P. thinks that she has a claim to it. Also, girl, you're single. Calm down. Take it easy. Just be happy that your friend did this totally normal thing to do. This is how elopement works. You go elope and then afterwards you announce it to people. That's the only way it can be done. Because if you announce it beforehand, it's not elopement. It's just getting married in private.
Starting point is 00:16:27 I personally got married at Carnegie Mellon University, which is where me and my wife met. And they had a venue there where we got married. And I was shocked to discover that other couples had been married at that venue before us. What? You mean they didn't build that venue exclusively for me and my wife and then tear it down immediately afterwards. That was our slash am I the devil.
