Welcome to R-slash Best of Redditor updates, where OP discovers that she's living a lie.
Our next Reddit post is from R-slash-M-I-the-butthole.
So I'm a 35-year-old woman, and my husband is 39.
We've been married for five years.
Before marrying me, he was with his high school sweetheart for a decade.
Apparently, they had compatibility issues and then lost contact.
Now, his ex has kidney failure and has come to R. City for treatment,
and, according to my husband, she contacted my husband through a mutual friend.
Now my husband wants to help her. Very politely, I asked my husband, does she not have her own people to help and nurse her? Why contact him all of a sudden after years? My husband was pissed and said, How can you be so petty and immature regarding a patient? Asking such stupid questions and that he expects better from me. Then I said, if her situation is so dire, then let's get her a place in our flat in another locality. And if you're so adamant, then let's finance her nursing
facility. Let's not get personally involved like a nurse, because I don't want to get personally
involved in nursing his ex or in her medical recovery process in person, nor do I want to go see her
in a hospital with him. My husband said that he's disappointed in me that I'm showing jealousy
over a long-ended relationship and can't show maturity even with a patient. Then the next day,
O.P. posted an update. I tried to have another conversation with my husband, and my parents are
visiting my house soon, but I don't think we've made any progress. I talked pretty politely that
this is very unfair to me and my boys. I have three-year-old twins, that he's willing to be an
emotional support tool to his ex and is so hell-bent at being at her side. Caring about acquaintances
is a different thing, but becoming an emotional support tool and a caretaker, all of this should
be exclusive to someone's spouse. What my husband is proposing sounds like the foundation of some
kind of emotional affair, especially since it involves his ex. He told me that it's tragic that I don't
trust him even after being together for nine years, and that I'm accusing him of having an affair.
He says it's natural for people to care about their loved ones and acquaintances, especially when
they're sick and need emotional support or a caretaker. And being at someone's side is the bare minimum
that one can do and doesn't automatically translate into an emotional affair. He says it's sad that
I'm so narrow-minded that I'm taking offense to him being personally involved with his ex.
He thinks that ideally, I too, should have volunteered to help his ex, visited her,
consoled her, and shown her more empathy instead of me being an insecure person.
I said, I'm not negating the fact that we should help a sick person, and we can assist
financially if necessary, but you offering emotional intimacy to her is not something I can
swallow. He once again said,
Tossing just money to a sick
person is so cold-hearted
on your part. A patient needs to
see that people are available to her,
to which I said, I'm not obligated
to be available to her, nor
are you. Nobody will blame
you for not taking responsibility
of your ex's life troubles.
He cut me off and said that I was being
selfish, and how he would be selfish
to not respond properly to a
person asking for help. At that point,
one of our twins woke up and
our conversation ended. Then one week later, O.P. posted an update. It feels as though centuries
have passed in the mere seven days. A lot has happened, and I feel kind of numb and dumb. So, as most of you
expected, my husband and I are getting divorced. His ex, who has kidney failure and is on dialysis,
did not reach out only because she needed help. She reached out because she wanted him back.
Her illness is real, but her intentions were not. She eventually had not. She eventually had
admitted that to me directly. She was quite blatant in this regard. Maybe her illness has made her
irritable and scornful, but that's how it was. Right now, I feel strangely calm. It's not unexpected,
but I'm still unable to process that a man can leave a relationship of one decade with two kids
like this with zero visible regrets. My parents are with me, helping me stay steady for my twin
boys, who just turned three. They're too young to understand what's happening, but they keep me
grounded. After everything came to light, my husband admitted that his ex was the one who ended
their relationship years ago, because she thought that he lacked drive and stability. He never really
got over her. Seeing her again, fragile, vulnerable, and remorseful, reopened old feelings that he'd
never dealt with. I actually met her by coincidence three days ago. My husband had been visiting the
hospital frequently, and one afternoon, he forgot his insurance file, which also contained some of our
joint investment papers. Since I was disentangling things from him in background while waiting for
my parents to come and giving my marriage a last chance, I'd gone to collect it from the administrative
office in the dialysis unit. Outside the renal chamber waiting area, we met each other. She recognized
me right away. And before I could even introduce myself, she told the nurse to give us the room for a
moment. The nurse was hesitant in leaving an immunocompromised person, but she insisted on a couple of minutes
of privacy, and then the ex asked me,
You're his wife, right?
I said, yeah, and she asked me to sit down for a moment.
Then she said, I was planning to bring this up gradually to you, but it's better we met here.
I guess today or tomorrow you'll have to know this.
There isn't any use beating around the bush, so I'll get straight to the point.
I know you probably think I'm intruding, but I never stopped loving him.
I was the one who ended things, and I regret it deeply.
I just want to be with him again, even if it's only for whatever time.
I have left. I swear to Almighty sitting above the seven heavens, I'm not exaggerating a single word.
When I got home and told my husband what had happened, he didn't deny it. He said he couldn't help
how he felt, and that being around her made him realize he still loved her. At this point, I didn't
think I had anything else to say. I'm now a single mother of two twin boys, and honestly, I'm fine.
I earn much more than my husband, and the house we live in is entirely my property. The apartment
is in the Southern Academic District, not far from the old university campus where I teach.
When this all came to light, I asked my husband to leave, and he did. It wasn't a dramatic fight.
I told him calmly that if his heart was with her, that's where he should go. There's no legal
obstacle in it. He had contributed little to the mortgage or maintenance, and the property was always
mine. He did try to bring up that were intertwined on other financial fronts. And honestly,
even if it's partial entanglement, what complicates now are the
shared investments and educational funds that we set up for our twin boys.
This is looking exhausting in theory only, and there are a few more entanglements that will be
much to type, and not to forget the legal proceedings of divorce, which we haven't even started
yet, not to mention the custody stuff. Then five days later, O.P. posted an update.
I filed for divorce today. We dated for four years, five years of marriage, twin boys who are
three, and a husband who decided to go back to his ex.
I'm not falling apart. I'm functioning, working, raising my boys, but it's lonely. I've never been the kind of person who keeps a big circle of friends, and right now, the silence feels heavier than usual. My parents are here, but they're with kids right now, and how much can I burden them with my emotional turmoil?
Then, eight months later, OP posted an update.
A few days ago, I learned through mutual friends that his ex passed away.
I haven't had a long conversation with him since I filed for divorce, so I don't know how he's doing,
and I don't intend to find out either.
We had legal conflicts over shared financials, but it was more or less handled through solicitors,
so our personal interaction is almost nil.
Earlier, he used to check on the kids, but we didn't use to talk.
He stopped checking on kids for quite a while.
Life has settled into a new routine.
My focus is on raising my sons and moving forward.
They're growing up quickly, and they deserve stability more than anything else.
I had suicidal thoughts and self-esteem issues in the beginning,
but I guess I'm doing mentally better now.
I bet a month from now, once the guy realizes he's totally alone,
he'll come crawling back, begging for a second chance.
Our next Reddit post is from R slash off my chest.
I, a 26-year-old woman, found out that my girlfriend, who's 26,
spent over a thousand pounds on her hair. My jaw is on the floor. She got her hair dyed to
platinum blonde. It's naturally black normally. I'm not angry that she dyed her hair, but I found
out that she paid almost 850 pounds to get it done, and that's not counting the tip and the new
hair product she needs. All total, she spent over a thousand pounds. It was one appointment spread over
two days. We aren't, well, we are not wealthy, and I almost had a heart attack when I found out.
We don't watch each other spending, but I would never spend that much without talking about it with
her. She says it was so much and took so long because it takes that much to get Asian hair blonde.
She did the appointments while I was working the night shift. I'm a paramedic and I sleep
during the day when I work nights, and sometimes I don't see her before I leave for work if she's
already asleep. She also paid with cash. I think she did it when I was working nights and used cash
that she took out over a few weeks, so I wouldn't see the charges on our statement,
or know how much the appointment cost.
Plus, she apparently has to go for touch-ups often, every couple of weeks, and those are also expensive.
Then, seven months later, OP posted an update.
I was upset because she took the money from our shared bank account,
hit it from me, and then lied when I found out what she had done.
She was contributing 35% towards our rent and other expenses,
and the money for her hair appointment and products came from our shared account.
I was upset because money was tight, and her spending so much made it difficult to pay for other things we needed.
We ended up breaking up over her being irresponsible with our finances, and the fact that she lied to me.
The tipping point came when I asked her to cancel her appointment to get her roots done because our rent was due.
She told me she canceled it, however, she didn't.
In order to pay our rent, we ended up not having enough money for food and her car payment.
That was enough to end the relationship for me.
truthfully, I should have ended things immediately when I found out about the original hair appointment.
Instead, I hung on for over three months, and I feel stupid because of that.
I moved out of our flat in February a week before our lease ended.
My ex-girlfriend kept saying I was angry about her changing her hair
and completely skipped over the fact that it was the financial irresponsibility that I was upset about.
She messaged me once right after we broke up asking for money.
I've blocked her everywhere.
I haven't seen or spoken to her in months.
and I don't plan to ever again.
I just feel stupid for not ending the relationship immediately.
The ex-girlfriend reaching out to O.P.
asking for money after the breakup is simultaneously shocking and predictable.
Our next Reddit post is from R slash off my chest.
My sister really loves a Korean band called BTS.
If it wasn't for her, I never would have heard of them,
and I don't know anything about them or their music.
But my sister absolutely loves them.
A few months ago, I heard my sister talking about
how they're going on tour. I thought it'd be a long shot, but I decided to try to get tickets for one of
their UK concerts. I had my friends help me when the tickets went on sale, and by some miracle,
I was able to purchase two tickets. I'm going to take my sister to the concert for her birthday.
I know she was disappointed because she wasn't able to get tickets, and she said they were too expensive.
I realized this is a very small problem compared to what's going on in the world.
But my manager overheard my colleague and I talking about the concert and is now demanding that I hand over the tickets.
The only reason I was even talking to my colleague about it was because my colleague was telling me about the time he went to a concert at the same stadium I'm taking my sister to.
My manager is desperate for tickets and because they're sold out, she's demanding mine.
I obviously said no, but that wasn't the end of it.
My manager is getting more and more demanding and won't let it go.
I'm just posting here to vent because I'm so tired of it.
I'm going to have to make a complaint because I've told my manager to leave it alone already.
Then two and a half months later, O.P. posted an update.
I left that job. My manager's behavior was what pushed me over the edge.
There were other issues at my workplace, but they were small enough that I could tolerate things.
When my manager started demanding that I hand over the tickets, it was the last straw.
I did report my manager to the head of the department and to HR, but nothing was done,
and I was encouraged to find a compromise.
The way my manager acted made things unbearable
when I could have tolerated all the other issues.
This has been going on for a while before my first post.
My manager continued to badger me about the tickets
right up until my last day.
My sister was absolutely over the moon about the tickets.
She had the best time at the concert.
As I mentioned in my first post,
I only knew who BTS is because of my sister
and I don't listen to their music.
So the concert was me, me. But my sister was excited and had an amazing time, so that's all that matters to me.
Yo, HR is worthless. Find a compromise? What do you mean compromise? Meet in the middle, give her one ticket?
Why compromise? It's her tickets. That was our slash best of Reddeter updates. And if you like this content, be sure to follow my podcast, because I put out new Reddit podcast episodes every single day.
