Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, I'm Mike Berenholz. On my new show, Funny You Ask, Trivia starts the conversation, and then things immediately go off the rails. I ask a question. My guests think they know the answer. Sometimes they do. More often, they do not. And then the conversation takes a turn. One trivia question turns into stories about career highs, painful bombs, and behind-the-scenes moments
Starting point is 00:00:22 that probably should have remained private. You'll hear confidence, misplaced confidence, bold guesses, wrong answers, quick laughs, and the slow realization that maybe this was a bad idea to say out loud. If you like smart comedy, sharp conversations, and trivia that exists purely to melt people's brains, this is Funny You Ask with me, Ike Barronholz. Follow Funny You Ask with Ike Barronholz on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Every now and then, someone would die. Risk, true stories, no holding back.
Starting point is 00:00:56 They catch my mom poisoning my sister. People say risk makes them feel less alone and more alive. During my time in prison, I discovered a podcast called Risk. That podcast saved my life so many times. Risk. The show where people tell true stories they never thought they dare to share wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to R slash Best of Redator updates, where OP's former bullying victim starts dating his sister. Our next Reddit post is from R-slash Relationships.
Starting point is 00:01:30 I'll start this by saying, I was a dick as a teenager. I'm from the UK, and between 14 to 16, I hung around in a gang. I did it because I was popular, I would get invited to parties, girls would like me, whatever other reason a teenage kid would hang out in a gang, basically. We were a group of jerks to certain people. I don't think that we were worse to anyone more than Stewart, though. My sister's new boyfriend. We were horrible to him, and we were typical.
Starting point is 00:01:57 school bullies to the guy. Once I turned 18, I got away from all the bad influences who I'd been told for years were holding me down, and realized I'd been a dick, and most of the others in the gang were too. I still speak to a couple of the people, but most of them were cut off, and quite frankly, I'm embarrassed of my actions when I was younger. My sister Jane went to a different school, as by that point, she and my parents had seen that my school wasn't exactly the best considering the crowd that I got mixed up in. I don't know if Stewart knew that I had a sister or not, in all honesty. I've recently moved back to my hometown and met up with my sister for a drink. She told me about her new boyfriend, and I told her, when she mentioned his name, the truth that I was a dick
Starting point is 00:02:40 to him. So if she's dating him, I'll apologize because I feel bad for my actions. She agreed and told me just to message him on Facebook, and he'll be fine. So I did as she said and wrote a very long message about how I'm happy for him and my sister, how I'm very sorry for what I did in the past. Explained that I know that I'll never know how I made him feel, but I'm genuine here, and I don't want any issues with him. I thought, fair enough, I tried. I'll try again at a later date when he might be more open to the idea, because I get it, he doesn't trust me. To him, I'm the dick who bullied him for years. My sister phoned me not long after and started shouting at how horrible I was as a teenager and that she'll never forgive me for what I did to her boyfriend. She listed some
Starting point is 00:03:25 things off that he told her, some of them I admitted to doing and being there when it happened. Some of them I didn't do, but heard about them, and some accusations I'd never had anything to do with or even heard of them happening. I feel bad for Stewart, and want to sort this out with them for not only feeling bad for doing it, but also to save my relationship with my sister. Then, three days later, OP posted an update. People were asking what me and my friends did to Stewart at school. So here's some examples of what I personally did to him. I put items in the local newspaper for sale with his number as the contact number. I ordered numerous takeaway deliveries to his house. I named him after a farm animal. I told the girl that he was crushing on
Starting point is 00:04:08 all the stuff that he had written about her in his notebook. I never did anything physically to him, because at the time, I was being physically assaulted by my mother's boyfriend. This is why I started training in boxing, started lifting weights around this age to become bigger and stronger to stand up for myself. I also said that I wouldn't harm anyone physically, and I refused to take part in that as I saw it as too far. But at the same time, I didn't realize the mental aspects of bullying were just as bad, if not worse. On to the update, I saw Stewart in a local pub last night that I went to with my friends. He originally didn't say anything, and I decided to give him some space because I was advised in the original post to leave him alone. When he started getting more drunk, he started making more comments
Starting point is 00:04:53 obviously intended to be heard by me. We both smoke, and we were both outside when he started berating me for my fake apology. I told him it wasn't fake, I meant it, that I've changed as a person, and that was me as a 15-year-old kid who thought that he was cool. The 25-year-old me is embarrassed by that. He said he didn't believe me and would love to deck me right there and then. I told him, if he wants to hit me, do it. I'd probably deserve it. At this point, I'm outnumbered three to one, as my two friends are still inside. Stuart hits me. The other two guys surround me, and even though I'm a big guy who's a trained fighter, it doesn't take a genius to work out that three guys versus one usually doesn't work out for the one. Luckily, my friends had heard the noise and got involved to
Starting point is 00:05:39 break it up before I got any serious damage. The pub owners then told us to leave, or they'd be involving the police, so we waited until they left and went out the back way to my friend's house. My sister phoned me while I was there telling me that Stewart had said that I tried to start a fight with him and he put me in my place. I told her, no, Stuart tried to start a fight with me. I told him if hitting me would help things, I get hit every week in boxing practice. I'm used to it. My friends told her the story of what actually happened and she wasn't happy. She phoned me again today and told me Stuart admitted what had happened and how he wanted him and his friends to hospitalize me. She dumped him because she was scared for her and my safety. My message that I
Starting point is 00:06:21 included in my last post at the end caused some controversy. But I'll repeat it. If you're a teenager who's bullying another kid or whatever reason to look cool, to make yourself feel better or whatever else, please stop. You could be partially the reason someone's life could change for the worse. I don't know if Stewart had other problems, but the bullying we did seems to have affected him a lot more than I thought, and I hope I never make anyone feel like that again. I wasn't really certain where this story was going, because I didn't know how much Stewart hated O.P., but it's very clear from this story that he absolutely hates O.P.'s guts. So what I'm kind of surprised by is why he didn't instantaneously break up with his new girlfriends, because how can you date someone whose brother is your tormentor? I
Starting point is 00:07:08 almost wonder if he was dating the sister as some like last ditch effort to like say F you to O.P. I'm not really sure. I'm not trying to be too harsh to Stewart. He's primarily the victim here, even though he's done some kind of bad things here at the end too. I'm just saying I'm kind of having trouble understanding Stewart's viewpoint here. Her next Reddit post is from R slash Am I the Butthole? This has caused quite a stir on both sides of the family. And my niece suggested I post this here as to garner unbiased opinions. My husband and I, 37, and 35 are pregnant with our first child. We're overjoyed as we've struggled with perceived infertility and miscarriages over the last decade. We want the gender to be a surprise,
Starting point is 00:07:48 but we may have to find out to settle this dispute. I'm currently at the tail end of my second trimester. Now, my husband absolutely idolized his grandpa, who unfortunately passed away last week. My husband is devastated, especially about the notion that his children will never meet their great-grandpa, who their father adored so much. As such, my husband has suggested that we named the baby after grandpa. Theodore if it's a boy, Theodora if it's a girl. Either way, we'll call the baby Teddy or Theo or Thea. It's not that I mind the name.
Starting point is 00:08:19 The issue is that our last name is Bundy. I asked my husband, do you really see no issue in naming our kid, Teddy, Bundy? He says, no, he's just honoring his grandpa. I told him he needs to think about how we'd be perceived, how our child will be treated and the implication that that name inherently carries. I literally had to spell out why that would be a horrible idea, and he still thinks that I just hate his grandpa.
Starting point is 00:08:49 I told him, no, grandpa was named in 1930 when the name Teddy Bundy wouldn't have been a problem. However, since certain events in the 70s and 80s, there's no feasible way we can give this name to our kid and not cause issues. He kept pushing and pushing until I blew up and told him to stop with the idiotic suggestion. And that's what it is, idiotic at best, sociopathic at worst. He got extremely upset and told his family and my parents who are divided. His family is obviously on his side and wants to honor grandpa by naming the baby after him.
Starting point is 00:09:25 My parents are torn, but on my side. As they understand the social pariah we would make our child by giving them such a similar name to the person who didn't. such abhorrent and downright evil things to so many women. I mean, personally, I don't think anyone is just going to assume that we're honoring a past loved one. They're just going to think of Ted Bundy. We've got an update below. I don't know where this is going.
Starting point is 00:09:48 But I've got to ask all the lady listeners out there. If you're on, you know, some dating app and you scroll to some guy, he's handsome, he's got a good job, everything, you know, checking every box. But his name is Ted Bundy. Is that enough to make you not date a guy? Because I would have to assume yes. Then, four days later, O.P. posted an update. Essentially, my husband stayed with his brother and sister-in-law for a night, and they talked it out. His brother was also very close with their grandpa, so I think hearing the same logic from someone grieving just as much knocks some sense into him. They explained why he couldn't just name his kid Teddy Bundy, and especially because we live in the western U.S. in one of the states where the original Ted Bundy operated and was also caught, imprisoned, and escaped. I don't think it's legal to use that name.
Starting point is 00:10:36 We spoke briefly on the phone before he came home, where I apologize for how rude I was that he kept suggesting the name. I explained that I was just stressed that he was seemingly overlooking just how bad it would be to have a kid with the same name as a very notorious serial killer, and I didn't feel listened to. He apologized as well, telling me that his grief was clouding his judgment, and that he also understands why we can't give our child Grandpa's name. While we did want to keep the gender a surprise, we felt like we had to look at the ultrasound to help hash this out.
Starting point is 00:11:07 We're having a baby boy and decided to give him grandpa's middle name, Silas. Our son will have the name Silas Bundy. We've also decided to go through with marriage counseling, as well as grief counseling for my husband. He asked me to attend, and I'm sure I could learn how to be more compassionate about his loss. I was never too close with my grandparents, so I'm trying to be here for him, but I can't empathize as well as I could. All in all, this worked out. Thank you so much for everyone who gave their opinions. You really helped us out here. You know, I'm glad it ended well, you know, happy ending. Though I feel like this kind of makes a funny party story, you know, like, hey, everyone, my name's Silas Bundy, and my interesting fact is, my parents almost named me Teddy after my dead grandpa. It'd be funny, and it would probably get a few laughs.
Starting point is 00:11:51 Our next Reddit post comes from R slash am I the butthole. I'm a 16-year-old girl. My parents split up before I was born. The custody is that I live with my dad most of the time and my mom every other weekend. Recently, my dad got engaged to Hannah and she and her kids are moving in. Hannah's kids are ages 9, 7, and 2 and 2. She's widowed, so they live with her full time. This made room arrangements a bit awkward since there's only three kid bidrooms to go around. Dad and Hannah talked it over last night without consulting anybody. And Hannah came over this morning to announce with my dad what they decided.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Apparently, they want the 9 and 7-year-old to each have their own rooms, and me to share a room with the triplets because my room is significantly bigger than the others, and I don't stay there full time. I said their plan was stupid. They want me to share a room with three toddlers? They said they didn't want me to move, but it was the biggest room so other people should share. I said I didn't care if I switched rooms, because the more logical move would have been the triplets in the big room,
Starting point is 00:12:56 the seven and the nine-year-old share, and I get my own room until I move out. They said that it would be more work to move my things to another room, and their idea was more practical. Then they asked why I was so pressed since I don't even live here full-time. I said that not staying in my room only four days a month was a sorry excuse to land me with a bunch of toddlers, and if they seriously planned on doing this to me, I'd make the custody arrangement change,
Starting point is 00:13:23 and I would stay with my mom for the most part. This made Hannah cry because she just wants her family to blend together nicely, and apparently I was ruining her plans. This made Dad mad at me, and I'm not allowed to talk to Hannah until she forgives me. I didn't know this meant so much to them, but I'm still saying that I'll stay with Mom longer if I have to share with toddlers. But my dad made me feel a bit guilty, so am I the butthole? Then OP posted an update.
Starting point is 00:13:51 I'm at my mom's house, at least for the weekend, while the adults try to work things out. But my mom said that I was welcome to live with her full time, and if I really wanted, we could change the custody agreement. Yeah, all the comments are basically saying that O.P's parents want free child care for the toddlers. And yeah, I'm on board with that as well. That's exactly what they're thinking. Then O.P. posted another update three days later. Everyone talked, but dad and Hannah are sticking with their decision, and I've decided to move into my mom's long term. And we're going to switch the custody around. That way, I'll only see my dad every other weekend.
Starting point is 00:14:26 and I'm just going to sleep on the couch when I'm there. Then one and a half years later, OP posted an update. I still live with my mom and I love it here. Hannah openly dislikes me, so I don't even stay for weekends anymore at my dad's house. We call sometimes, but it's what it is, I guess. Hannah's kids are fine, but I only see them on holidays. Hannah's pregnant again,
Starting point is 00:14:49 and now her older kids, now ages 8 and 10, are going to share a room. So I guess it wasn't too much work in the first place. She just hated me, lull. I can never quite decide who's worse in these scenarios. The evil stepmother who hates her stepdaughter or the biological dad who marries and supports the evil stepmother. I think probably the dad.
Starting point is 00:15:11 That was our slash best of Redditor updates. And if you like this content, be sure to follow my podcast because I put out new Reddit podcast episodes every single day.
