Welcome to R-slash Best of Redditor updates, where OP breaks up a wedding. Our next Reddit post comes from R-slash in my butthole. I haven't spoken to my dad in years. I don't hate him. I'm not angry at him. I just don't want him in my life anymore.
Starting point is 00:01:48 There's a lot of reasons, but all around, he's just a terrible person who is never hugely involved in my life after I turned 18 anyways. He texted and called throughout the years, but it was always a half-hearted attempt, and the last time I really spoke to him, I told him I only wanted him to reach out when he was ready to genuinely apologize for how terrible he was. He was supposed to get married at the end of January, and he thought that it was really important for me to be there. He called and texted pleading for me to come, but I really just had no interest in it. I felt bad for his future wife. He's been engaged four times since my parents broke up and it never worked. And after my brother, who's still in contact with him, told me this woman was selling her house
Starting point is 00:02:35 and moving several hours away from where she lived with a small child to be with him, I felt worse. But I still didn't say anything. Yesterday, the future wife called me and left me a voicemail. She honestly sounds like a really nice lady, which just made me feel so much worse for her. So I decided to call her back, and we actually spoke for a really long time. My dad's side of the story is that our mom filled my head with lies about him, and I refused to speak to him because of that. So I told her the truth, all of it, how he was manipulative and had anger issues, how horrible of a father he was, and how he always, always lied. I mean, this man lied about stuff that didn't even matter. He lied just to lie. lie, and he wasn't even good at it, so most of the time he got caught. I told him, I'm sure it
Starting point is 00:03:28 doesn't seem like that now, but if she believed even half of all the stories I told her, she would keep her house and not marry him, because she honestly might not have a place to live in a year because he's also terrible with money. Everyone was calm during this conversation, and towards the end, she thanked me and said I gave her a lot to think about. I did not do this to be malicious and ruin his life. I did it because she asked me and I wasn't going to lie to her. Well, apparently, all hell broke loose last night. I'm currently sick, so I went to bed early and slept in today, and I woke up to my phone blowing up, and everyone in my family is angry at me. Turns out, the fiancé decided to end things and went back home. No argument, no changing her mind. She sent
Starting point is 00:04:15 me a long message around midnight last night, thanking me for opening her eyes. My dad thanks I'm being vindictive because I hate him. I don't. And everyone else in my immediate family thinks that I went sticking my nose where it didn't belong because I didn't even want to be part of the wedding anyways. I definitely don't think that I was doing anything wrong. But did I? As far as I was concerned, I kept that woman from being miserable. But everyone else says I chose not to be a part of his life and since I made that choice, whatever he does doesn't involve me. All right, there's an update. I don't know where the update's going, but that type of messaging just pisses me off so much. Because first of all, so what if OP is being vindictive? She had a terrible
Starting point is 00:04:57 father. If she wants to be vindictive and get revenge against her father, okay, more power to you, man, as far as I'm concerned. So the dad can systematically ruin O.P.'s life, but O.P. can't be mad once and seek revenge once. Give me a break. And then also the whole, you can't stick your nose into his business. Why not? The fiancee called O.P. out of the blue, so if O.P. wants to give her opinion, she can give her opinion. Part of me wonders if the entire family wanted the dad to get married because that would basically take him off of their plate and it would be this new woman's responsibility now. Then two days later, O.P. posted an update. For some context, I had my first child in October of last year. Of course, my dad didn't know that I was having a baby until after he was already born. And one of my
Starting point is 00:05:44 brothers told him the good news around Christmas. That sparked my father into insisting I come to his wedding, despite not talking to him and knowing nothing about his future wife. I told him no repeatedly, which is why he gave the ex-fiancee my phone number to try to convince me to come. I guess he was really just that dumb because it clearly didn't go his way. I called the ex-fiancee today to apologize. Not for what I did, but for what happened as a result of it. We had another long conversation that was honestly kind of heartbreaking. I think if things were different, I would have loved to have her as a stepmom. We had the same career, and she seemed like a very honest and down-to-earth person. We didn't really get into what the relationship was like, but we did talk about what happened
Starting point is 00:06:29 after we got off the phone the last time. My dad was very insistent that she only tried to convince me to bring my little family up for the wedding. Considering that the fiancé wasn't even aware I existed until recently, she didn't listen and called me at a time that he wasn't home. When he did get home, she tried to talk about the things I said with him to try to try to be fair and get his side. But he refused to talk about what our childhood was like and blew up on her. He tried to gaslight her and convince her she was in the wrong for not listening to him. And then, she just said that something inside of her clicked, and she realized she had ignored way too much for way too long. He got irritated with her and her son very quickly over minor
Starting point is 00:07:12 things. He called her dumb and stupid, joking at first. But as time went on, it stopped being funny, and started feeling cruel. He played himself up to be the family man, but was never actually that interested in interacting with her child. She found it weird that he bought three different cars within the span of their two-year relationship, but he never really had an answer for why or how he was able to afford it. He ran the restaurant that he was general manager of into the ground,
Starting point is 00:07:43 which was not the first time that's happened either, and he was out of a job for a considerable amount of time. In the end, she didn't want to risk her own child having any sort of similar childhood that I did, and she made the decision to leave. She said there were flags in every color waving at her the entire relationship, but she wanted to see the best in him. Hosting to R-slash-M-I-the-butthole made me realize something else. All of my siblings are male, and I don't think they were ever treated the same way I was.
Starting point is 00:08:11 He was a big believer in physical punishment, but he was verbally abusive to me in a way that probably damage, me more than I realized. I grew up with my fiance and he's seen firsthand how terrible he was. Everyone else on the outside of the situation probably never had any clue because my father was a master manipulator and any damage I had was all internal. I've never been all that close with anyone in my family, but I think it's best to go no contact with them for a little while. I finally blocked my dad's number after all these years and I don't really have any public social media, so this is probably the last time I'll be hearing from him. It's a little relieving. I left that line of communication
Starting point is 00:08:53 open for the sake of my siblings, but also to give him a chance to give me a genuine apology, and he never did. He never admitted any fault, and always disregarded how I felt for the sake of making himself look better. Yeah, I had a feeling that's the case. Typically, people aren't going to throw away an engagement just from one phone call, you know, unless it's like, hey, you know, I caught your guy cheating or whatever. So if she pieced out after that phone call, I had had a feeling she was probably unhappy about other stuff and this was just the straw that broke the camel's back. So Opie shouldn't even feel bad about it. She barely contributed. She just pointed the fiancee in the right direction. Our next Reddit post is from R slash relationships. I've known my
Starting point is 00:09:32 boyfriend for pretty much my whole life. We were best friends growing up and I always had the hugest mega crush on him. But I was too chicken to say anything because he was a totally hot football player with great hair who had no business being friends with a socially awkward little gremlin like me. Then, in a whirlwind series of events that read something like a terrible Taylor Swift song, about one and a half years ago, he finally confessed that he's always had a crush on me too, and we've been together ever since. It all still feels like a daydream sometimes. This guy is undoubtedly the love of my life, and I'm so incredibly lucky to have him. It was a all too good to be true. Six months ago, he was in a freak accident that left him with a severe
Starting point is 00:10:21 concussion and some brain damage. We live together, so from day one, I've been taking care of him. He's made great progress. His motor skills are back to normal. He's having a much easier time remembering things. And two months ago, his doctors declared him fully recovered. Unfortunately, the way the accident insurance works is that once the doctors have done that, he can no longer receive care. Since the accident made him unable to work for the time being and the insurance policy from the accident has run out, he currently doesn't have insurance. While all the physical signs of the brain damage have resolved themselves, emotionally and behaviorally, he's a completely different person. I'm not a mental health professional, but I've seen a lot of signs of what I think is severe depression. Since
Starting point is 00:11:07 he's not working, he spends about eight hours a day playing video games. He used to love working out. but he hasn't set foot in a gym since the accident. Even though he's physically able to now, I still cook all of his meals and do most of the cleaning. We used to split everything 50-50. Most disturbing of all is that he's become incredibly short-tempered with me. Sometimes it feels like I'm walking on eggshells because if I say or do the wrong thing, it'll cause a fight.
Starting point is 00:11:35 We'd never gotten into a single argument in our entire friendship or relationship before the accident, but now they happen almost every day. I've tried everything I can to help get him back on track. But most of the time when I suggest getting out and doing something or ask him to help with chores, he says he's not feeling well and goes to lay down in his bed and play games on his phone. If I try to push the issue, it starts a fight that ends with him saying, I need to give him more time to recover.
Starting point is 00:12:04 There are good days and bad days, but sometimes I just feel like in his head he's not fully there with me. This is not the guy that I've known in love for my entire life. We don't have access to any type of medical or mental health care for him, since he doesn't have insurance, and money is already tight without his income. We're so hit over heels in love with each other, and I absolutely refuse to lose him to this stupid accident. I can't even imagine my life without this SOB, even if it's one where I have to take care of him every day for the rest of my life.
Starting point is 00:12:37 But I'm exhausted, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Then, one month later, OP posted an update. Thanks to the resources a few people posted about, I was able to find new doctors for him to start seeing at a very low cost. It's only been a month, which isn't much time, but he's already doing a lot better. Yesterday, he had another round of neurological testing and got a normal range score in 10 of the 12 tests.
Starting point is 00:13:03 It's a huge improvement, and it's definitely boosted his confidence, too. As far as our relationship goes, We haven't had a single fight since the week or so after I posted here. Thanks to some of the outsider perspective I got, I realized that I'd been so focused on taking care of him for so long that I had completely forgotten about my own needs. I also realized that somewhere along the line,
Starting point is 00:13:25 we had totally stopped communicating. That part was my fault, just as much as it was his. So we sat down and had a long, long talk. I made it clear that I wasn't trying to invalidate his injury or recovery, but I told him how much being his caretaker had affected my life. Even though I would never take back the decision to do so, I pretty much had to give up everything except my job. We decided to each make a list of things the other could do to make it easier for us.
Starting point is 00:13:53 He also recognized that his bad moods had been causing a lot of our fights, and he admitted that recovering from the injury has gotten him into a rut that he feels like he couldn't get out of. So we made a plan together to start getting him out of it. So far, this is what we've done. We cook dinner together every night. It's a good chance for him to relearn and fine-tune some motor skills with me supervising. And it's one less responsibility I feel like I have to handle a loan. We got a new gym membership together and we've been going two to three times a week to do some light cardio and stretch together.
Starting point is 00:14:25 He enrolled in an online Italian class that requires him to do an hour of classwork each day. The biggest issue I had before was the amount of time he spent playing video games. I didn't want to try to make him stop because, one, that's unreasonable and unnecessary, and two, it would probably just make him resent me. So, I started playing with him. I've never played anything except Mario Card in my life, so I'm pretty bad, but he's teaching me stuff. It's actually been a lot more fun than I thought. It's awesome bonding time for us, and since he gets to play at night with me, he started playing a lot less during the day. The difference is huge.
Starting point is 00:15:03 This week, I got sick with the flu, and on my first day home from work, he went out to run an errand and came back with beautiful flowers for me and eggs to make for breakfast, which he did all on his own. I was just totally speechless, and it made me so happy. So yeah, sorry if this was really long and sappy, but I really am thankful for all the help and advice I got from you guys, and I wanted to express how much of a difference it made. That was our slash best of Redditor updates, and if you like this content, be sure to follow my podcast because I put out new Reddit podcast episodes every single day.
