Starting point is 00:01:45 Our next Reddit post comes from R-slash nanny. This is really weird to post, and I feel crazy for even thinking it. But so many weird things have happened over the past month that I've been working for this family. I feel like I need a second opinion, or someone to tell me if I'm going crazy. Like I said, I've worked for this family since just before the new year. They have two kids, ages two and eight. I know that they have trackers sewn into the two-year-old's diaper bag and the eight-year-old's backpack. She told me about them and I obviously have no issue with that. The kids are great, and their mom is a single mom who seemed really lovely from our first few meetings.
Starting point is 00:02:22 A few weeks ago, she sent me a text asking if I could come in now because she got called into work. I lied and said that I was in a different big city visiting my sister for the weekend. It was a dumb white lie because I didn't want to be asked during the weekend if she kept being called in. As that's happened multiple times before, and I really needed a full weekend to myself. She simply responded, you don't need to lie, I'll find a backup. It definitely gave me super weird vibes and was so, super embarrassing, but I shrugged it off and figured she may have been at Trader Joe's earlier in the day when I went, or she saw my car, or something like that. Then, this Tuesday, I came in, and she was definitely cold towards me. I'd been out celebrating a friend's birthday Monday night at a bar, but I nursed one drink the entire night and was never even tipsy.
Starting point is 00:03:14 I take showers in the morning and were clean clothes, so there's no way I smelled like alcohol. But she confronted me and accused me of being. hungover, said that I reeked of booze, and kept asking if I had a drinking problem because why would I be drinking on a Monday night? I was really put off and told her the truth that it was my friend's birthday, and I was just celebrating with her and some other friends and hadn't even drank. She paused for a super long time and just nodded and left for work like nothing happened. The mom is super religious and very vehemently anti-alcohol, but I still feel like it was a weird accusation. I asked my girlfriend when I got home if I smelled like alcohol or anything, somehow, and she couldn't smell anything. Earlier today was the final incident that really cemented
Starting point is 00:04:04 this stupid conspiracy theory in my head. I took the bus this morning when I normally take my car, because I'm extra broke right now and need to save gas. I got to her house around 10 minutes early, but sat in a little wooded curb area for a while until it was my official time to start. Five minutes before my start time, the mom text me, have you left yet? I have a meeting at 10.30. I am never late. I walked in early, and she looked confused. When I mentioned taking the bus, she literally said, oh, that makes sense. What the hell do I do? I looked all over my car, in my backpack, and in my car's car seat. I couldn't find anything. Am I overthinking this? Edit, I just looked with the help from you all, and I found an air tag duct tape to the underside of my car. So I'm very, very creeped out currently. I'm not sure what to
Starting point is 00:04:59 say or do now. Then OP posts on R slash legal advice, which I'm not going to read because it's just a recap of the exact same information and OP asks, what do I do? Then one week later, OP posted an update. So I ended up calling the police. They came to my place and checked out the car, air tag, etc. and they went and spoke with the mom. The air tag was in her name, by the way. I know some people were suggesting it could be someone else. The mom was shocked that I'd call the police over the tag and totally tried to gaslight the officers.
Starting point is 00:05:33 She said that she put it there to make sure I wasn't speeding and as a backup if I lost their bag with the trackers. She also flat out lied and said she told me, but I must not have been listening. They just gave her a warning and no further out. action was taken. I honestly don't think they really took my concern seriously. If anything, they seemed to side with her perspective. So that's awesome. I'm obviously not working for her anymore, and I've blocked her phone number because she was belittling me over calling the police
Starting point is 00:06:04 over her keeping her children safe. On to the next job, I guess. What a stupidly transparent lie. If OP really knew about the tracker, why was it duct taped under the car instead of in a glove compartment. People in the comments were suggesting taking the tracker and just mailing it to some random address in Thailand or something. Our next Reddit post is from R slash advice. I'm a 26-year-old woman and my husband is 37. My husband is not sponsoring my son despite our discussions pre-marriage. I've been genuinely distressed about this and need some advice. This is my second marriage and I have a son for my first marriage whom I have custody of. My ex-husband is not financially stable. We had eloped back then and had our son when we were still young, and later our marriage had issues.
Starting point is 00:06:53 I loved my son, and I was clear that I would fight for custody, and my ex didn't fight it. We divorced two years ago. I met my current husband through a friend of my mom's. They obviously knew that I have my son with me, and both him and his family were very understanding and loving about him. My parents were also pleased and introduced us. Back then, I brought up that my son is dear to me, and my husband said that he understood. I spent some time gently having my son come to terms with it, and we got married in February. Our marriage has been genuinely great. He's a deeply loving partner, wants to do well by me, and has also been a kind and understanding stepfather to my son.
Starting point is 00:07:33 He works for a multinational corporation, and I knew that he had to leave for work once every few months regularly. In April, he was offered a director role at his company's main branch, which he took, and he left in July. He now wants to bring me there, says he's settled into it, and he misses me. But when I brought up the paperwork for my son, he said it was best if I came alone. He said it would be a new country for the two of us, and there was already enough on his plate navigating all of this, along with our plans to have kids now that he was settled in too. And he said that it would be in everyone's interests if I left my son here, with people I trust, either his father or my parents. I was shocked. I brought up that we had discussed
Starting point is 00:08:15 this before our marriage. I'd even brought this up with my ex. I'd reached out to him after ages and told him, and he agreed to whatever he needed to agree to, if I needed to move our son abroad with me. My husband got angry, we argued about it, and ended the call. Since then, we do call, he talks about us and me moving in, and keeps making his case. He even sent me the spousal paperwork. I'm just so torn up over this. I can't hand him off to my ex. If his conditions weren't good enough for me, how can I leave him there? Some of my friends say that he's his son too. He's responsible for him too. I have to consider my happiness too, but I just don't know if I could do that. How would we share custody even? My mom suggested I at least go there and take stock of the situation and leave my son
Starting point is 00:09:03 with them for now. They're advising me to compromise for the sake of the marriage, that compromises need to be made. I'm torn about this. Please advise. People are basically begging O.P. not to pick a bad husband over a son, and the next day Opie posted an update. We spoke again today. My husband was asking whether I had taken a look at the forms, and he was just looking forward to bringing me there. I honestly told him that I hadn't, and that I can't imagine being happy there without my son. I brought up that that I hadn't hit anything, that he knew my son was with me, that he promised that he would always take that into consideration. My son is very attached to me and I love him. I can't do this. My husband tried to calm me down, told me he understood what I was saying, that when he talked
Starting point is 00:09:50 about these things, he hadn't thought that it meant life in another country would be the three of us. He wanted to do right by both of us. I told him it was a non-starter. I will not leave him behind. My husband finally relented and said that at least come for a visit right now while he sorts things out. He said for the visit at least if I could come alone, because he hadn't seen me in so long. I agreed to visit just to see him. I told him I can't stay too long because my son's school started. I also think maybe if I'm there for a couple of weeks, he can see that he's panicking, and if I'm there, I can just make him understand my POV better. Then one week later, OP posted an update. I spoke to my husband that I looked at the forms. The form from my son
Starting point is 00:10:32 can be submitted at the same time as mine. It just needs proof of sole custody. I need my husband to sponsor it. I can't leave my son behind. I just can't. And my husband promised. He promised my son would always be a part of our family. He promised. That's it. You can't back out now. He said that we'll go over a solution when I visit him. I told him I needed an answer and him submitting the forms before I do. I said that because in my mind, if he's not going to do the forms, it's over. And I can't spend two weeks trying to create domestic bliss and having marital relations with him just for him to tell me later it's still a no from him. I was going to go there to be a good and affectionate wife to him and have intercourse with him for a few weeks in the hope that softens him towards a situation. But if it's going to be
Starting point is 00:11:19 a no, then what am I going through this for? He's telling me that I'm his wife, that I agreed to visit. I should be with him. Well, he promised to never have my son be a question mark. My mom thinks being there would have worked, but I'm the one literally like putting my body on the line for this. I've told him I just need the forms to be submitted. He's been talking to my parents in depth, but I just need the application. I know I blew up my marriage by doing this. I married for love the first time and then for stability the second, and I got it wrong both times. Maybe I'm the problem. I had so many options. I keep taking the worst one and end up with less as a result. I pity my son for having me as his mom. I even gave up my job in December. It was an admin job at my best friend's dad's company that he literally carved out for me. I was able to do my diploma alongside that job. I left my job when I was getting married because I wouldn't need it. Her dad even pressed me to continue working, but I was like, oh, I don't need to anymore. Such an idiot. He literally carved out a good, easy job for me. I can't just go back now like an ingrate. I'm hoping my husband fills out the forms, but, but, he literally carved out a good, easy job for me. I can't just go back now like an ingrate. I'm hoping my husband fills out the forms, but, but,
Starting point is 00:12:32 but he doesn't want my son, clearly. And that's what makes me mad. I didn't force him to agree. I saw a lot of people, and I had to end it because I could tell they didn't want my son. My husband at least acted like it. Then OP posted an update. I called my old boss.
Starting point is 00:12:50 I told him I'm sorry for quitting last time. That I'm in trouble, and I need to make a decision, and if I could please have my job back, that would help me decide what I need to do. That I have more experience than I did last time. I have a diploma now. My son is older, and I understand if the job is no longer available, but I just needed to know to be able to make my decision. My old boss said that he was very worried for me, asked if everything was okay. I don't know if my best friend told her parents
Starting point is 00:13:18 about what I'm going through or not. He said that the job hadn't been given to anyone, that I was valuable at it, and to just give him some time to set it up again, but I can probably start soon. He asked if the pay I left at was fine, and I said yes, absolutely. I'm going to start going in again. I don't know what'll happen if my husband comes around and my son and I get sponsored to move, but for now, I need to start going in again. You know, it's kind of sad because O.P. is really, really harsh on herself.
Starting point is 00:13:46 She's obviously unlucky in love, but she's honestly a really admirable mom. She's putting her son first, she's putting her foot down, she's not giving in to temptation, be like, oh, well, maybe we'll work it out, I'll just visit for a few weeks and see. And during that time, we all know that. the husband will be pressuring her and pressuring her. Look at this great life. Your son's doing fine with the grandparents. Everything will be fine. Let's just start a life together. But now,
Starting point is 00:14:11 man, she's got integrity, she's stuck by her son, and she feels guilty for it. It's really tragic. I think this kid has a great mom. Our next Reddit post is from R slash relationships. I'm a 25-year-old woman, and my boyfriend Chris is 27. We met in college, where we spent a few years as friends, finally getting together after I graduated. We both were English majors and wrote for the student's literary paper. We definitely connected overriding, which makes me feel worse now that my feelings have changed. After dating a year, we decided to move in together, and about six months after that, Chris quit his job to write his novel series full time. It's been tough at times, but Chris is very passionate about his novels. He was working on the first novel before we started dating, so I knew
Starting point is 00:14:56 it was a big thing for him going in. His first novel is finished now, and he's shopping it around to different publishers while working on the next two, a series of six. I loved the first book and was very supportive. Chris really is a very talented writer, but maybe being closer to his writing process this time has sort of soured me to his writing. Chris uses things I say and observations I've made in his writings. I'm sometimes not sure if he remembers that I said some of these things in the first place. These almost always are coming through the protagonist. When I mentioned it while reading over one of his chapters in a, oh, that's cute, I said that sort of way. He just really shortly said, writers draw from life. He reacts kind of coldly when I point these things out. In particular,
Starting point is 00:15:44 there's this idiom that I use fairly frequently that's somewhat unique. I personally don't know anyone else who says it, except my late grandmother. The protagonist didn't use this idiom at all in his first book, but does in the second and third. Chris insists that he didn't get this from me, But I find that so hard to believe. On another occasion, one of Chris's friends who also reads his drafts commented on the main character's insight, specifically referencing a line which is very similar to something I said. Chris even confirmed when I read the chapter that it was from me. In front of his friends, he just says he writes from experience. I'm not sure why I thought that he would tell his friends that the line came from me, or if it was fair that I was annoyed, that he didn't. The biggest sticking point for me is that back in college, I wrote fan fiction, lull,
Starting point is 00:16:34 and had a particular character that was a unique subversion to a fantasy trope. I'm sure I can't be the only person who ever thought of it. But Chris read my fan fiction and was well aware that I was proud of this character. The other night, he showed me a new chapter that features my character idea with a different gender. I immediately said something, and Chris denied he'd gotten the idea from me. He said he remembered my character only when prompted. and didn't even think about it while writing this character. He got mad when I was incredulous and stormed out of our apartment.
Starting point is 00:17:06 I've dropped the subject since. I don't read or write fan fiction anymore, much less actually use this character, so it doesn't seem like something to fight over. I just don't want to read his chapters anymore, but he begs me to give him feedback and check his grammar. Sometimes restructure entire chapters to flow better. I never minded doing this before because I liked his writing. but now I see it as cheap, and I kind of feel like he's a little cheap too.
Starting point is 00:17:35 Is it worth trying to talk to him about this? Should I just forget about it and distance myself from editing his drafts? Then two months later, Opie posted an update. After my last post, I decided to approach Chris about getting a job. Your responses made me realize I was upset about the smaller issue, while kind of ignoring the glaring one. I thought we could have a conversation about my concerns, and maybe even start working on updating his resume together.
Starting point is 00:18:02 He did not respond well at all. He started by repeating that his book would be picked up any day now. I stayed firm and didn't let him drop the subject or brush me off. Once Chris realized I wasn't going to back down again, he got angry. He kept talking about his responsibility to his art and how I could never understand that. I got pissed and told him that we both have a responsibility to our household, and I was tired of him taking advantage of me. He started calling me names and telling me cruel things,
Starting point is 00:18:34 definitely trying to hit all my insecurities, basically that no one will ever love me but him. At one point, he let it slip that he's been reading my journal. I finally told him that we're done, and he needed to get out. Even if he got a job, I could never look at him the same way again. He stormed off and stayed with a friend, I think, I'm not sure. Things have gotten better now, but the breakup was very, difficult at first. He did not respect my request for no contact and was texting me from
Starting point is 00:19:03 friends' phones, asking for me back and then berating me. I just kept blocking numbers and moving on with my life. Apparently, he's still posting about me on Facebook, but whatever. He moved in with two patrons of the arts, aka his parents. In other news, I've expanded my crafting business and it's going well. I'm also considering adopting some pet rats for company. Sometimes I get lonely in this apart, by myself, and I don't have much of a social life anymore. Just keep swimming, I guess. Let me give you guys a bit of advice as someone who's been through this. Get a stable job first and then work on your, you know, creative business, whatever on the side, YouTube slash streaming slash books slash crafting business. Because there's a very good chance your idea will fail and you at least need to pay the bills. This Chris guy
Starting point is 00:19:53 was straight up deluding himself. You guys think his book is on the shelves today, right? now? Personally, I doubt it. That was our slash best of Redditor updates.
