Welcome to R slash Best of Redditor updates, where a couple of Dungeons and Dragons player
discover that the real bad guy is their dungeon master.
Our next Reddit post comes from R slash D&D Next, which is a Dungeons and Dragons subreddit
for all the cool people out there.
Detect Magic blinded my character when I used it on an apparent divine artifact.
Am I overreacting when I confronted the?
the DM at that moment? The dungeon master said that the magical aura I saw was so bright and strong
that it blinded me. I failed a DC20 constitution save, which if you don't know is a very, very
difficult save to make. But the spell doesn't say anything like that, nor can I find any rules
about this. I was confused when that happened, so I asked the DM to show me where that was in the
books. He said it's his rule, but there was no warning whatsoever, nor were we informed
about any house rules like that.
If I knew there was more to the spell
than what was written in the books,
then I wouldn't have used it.
I couldn't do anything
because I need line of sight on most of my spells.
I got downed three times
and my party exhausted all their healing on me.
After the game, I expressed my frustration
how it sucks so much
and I didn't find that fun,
only to be told,
well, maybe you shouldn't poke your nose into everything.
Now my character is blinded permanently.
I was told to take a level in a martial class and take the blind fighting feet,
or was given the option to constantly see through a familiar's eyes instead,
but I'll have one last spell slot in every slot level.
We're level 5 right now.
Or roll a new character if I want to.
Then two days later, OP posted an update.
There is no D&D game anymore.
John, the DM, left the club.
And he got banned from the community.
Why?
Well, yesterday, two fellow players, Jerry and Jack, confronted John over Discord about it, and
I'm Asian, a Filipino immigrant.
John ranted about me and my appearance.
I'm pretty short.
To be frank, have you ever seen a Filipino dude taller than 167 centimeters?
And he has a problem with me dating a white Australian woman.
He was saying that my partner could do better and find someone else in her league.
He also started ranting about Indians and Pakistanis for some reason.
He probably thought that I was one of those because of my brown skin.
Apparently, when we joined the first day, he was going to make a joke about my relationship.
But he held it in consideration for my partner.
She has a pride pin on her satchel, and John thought the joke would be too much for her
and didn't want to get cancelled or reported.
He also said some misogynistic things towards my partner about her jeans
and stuff. The thing that made him snap, making my wizard permanently blind, was when me and my
partner shared food with each other that night. We didn't feed each other or drink from the same
cup, nothing like that. All we did was split our food and shared it so that each other could
both enjoy. I got Katsu chicken, which didn't come with any rice, WTF, and she got fried rice.
John found that very cringy. It wasn't the food being an issue.
We all had our own food.
And the other players, Jerry and Jack,
thinks that John got very jealous when we did that.
Jerry and Jack called him the Aussie C-word,
then ghosted him,
then told us about it today.
That's it.
That's the update.
Well, O.P., you started the D&D game
with you and your fellow adventurers
storming an evil villain's lair.
And then, in the real world,
your fellow players helped you fight off
against an evil racist scumbag.
It's awesome that your party members have your back, O.P.
Yo, of all the crazy things racist say,
you're not allowed to share rice is a new one.
The especially crazy thing is that could be like an understandable thing to happen
even if they weren't dating.
Just like, I don't know, two guys who are buddies playing D&D together.
Oh man, my food didn't come with rice.
Hey, I've got stir-fried rice.
You want to take half my rice and I get half your chicken?
Okay, cool, sounds good.
You know, it's not even like a dating thing. What's this guy's...
Okay, I know his issue. His issue is that he's a stupid racist.
It's just like, what a weird thing to get wrapped up over.
Our next Reddit post is from R-slash relationships.
I met this guy, Justin, about a year ago.
We run in the same arts scene, and he was friends with my significant other,
so I was friendly with him at first.
After getting to know him a bit better,
I started picking up on a ton of red flags that I really try to avoid in friendships
and men in general.
He's superficially charming.
but he's got a fragile ego and short temper. He's pushy, confrontational, and misogynistic.
On top of that, he's sincerely not very good at what we do, and he does not take constructive criticism well.
He burned some bridges, and several people have spoken to him about his lack of professionalism.
I hope I'm not coming off as really B-wordy here, but I've dealt with a ton of people like him in my career, and I'm out of patience.
I was able to maintain a friendly relationship with him for a while,
but he slowly pushed me into the
This guy makes my skin crawl territory.
The first time I ran into him at a show without my significant other, he said,
Where's so-and-so?
I guess this means I can hit on you now.
I brushed it off as a bad joke at the time.
But seriously, he's a grown man who should know better than that at this point.
There's a lot of gray area in my industry,
but it's still a job, and there's so many,
layers of disrespect there. Another time at a party, I was catching up with an old friend of mine
from out of town in the hallway, away from the action, where we obviously wanted privacy.
Justin waltz is over and cuts me off to say, I just have to interrupt because your friend here
is so beautiful. Again, I chalked it up to bad game, but this time I said something about it.
I tried to have a sincere conversation with him about how his actions make me and other women feel,
and he got extremely defensive.
He said he can't help but hit on pretty girls all the time
because he's just a caveman and that's how he's wired.
There was no getting through to him.
I don't want to write a novel here,
but I've been trying to keep my distance from him for a while.
I'll say a polite hello when we run into each other,
but I don't engage him in conversation.
I really don't see a reason I should have to interact with him beyond that.
But now it seems my coldness is pissing him off.
For the past two weeks or so,
he keeps trying to have a chat with me, but the way he's going about it makes me uncomfortable.
First, he cornered me at a show and tried to invite himself over to my apartment.
He said, you're free in the afternoons, right? I can just swing by. More recently, he chased me
out of a show, shouting my name and calling me rude. He frightens me, and the thought of having to say
that to his face frightens me even more. Should I try sending him a message? What can I say that
won't just make things worse. Then two weeks later, O.P. posted an update. I got a ton of great
advice. Thank you. And I started practicing what I would say to his face the next time I ran into him.
I also considered alerting the management at the club that he chased me out of, but I didn't have to
do that. Apparently, he brought it up to the club himself and tried to rat me out for my
rudeness, but it totally backfired. One of the managers approached me a few days ago and said
Justin told her about what happened. My stomach sank at first because I thought she was going to
encourage me to talk to him, but she said just the opposite. Without even hearing my side of the story,
she told him that I don't have to talk to him if I don't want to. She also said she won't be
booking us on the same shows anymore, and that the staff knows not to allow him into the building
on nights that I'm performing. She said she wants me to feel safe at the club, and she's got my back.
What a win for sisterhood.
After that, he tried reaching out to my significant other,
who also shut him down and told him to leave us alone.
I don't know if he's let it go at this point,
but I've been making notes about everything like some people wisely suggested,
and I'm feeling validated and supported.
I'd love to hear this guy's conversation to the club owner.
She wouldn't talk to me.
Okay, so?
But I want her to talk to me.
Uh, tough luck.
So what?
You don't get that right?
Well, how can I make her talk to me?
You can't? Grow up? Stop being a baby?

My boyfriend and I both applied for an open position for undergrads at a local engineering company.
The position was very appealing.
It offered good pay, flexible hours, and was a great resume addition, since they're a pretty big company.
The application process was long and arduous and extremely competitive,
and they ended up only accepting three undergrads out of a final pool.
of 10. My boyfriend and I both go to the same school. It's a top five in the U.S., so education-wise
we were both qualified. And he majors in computer science while I major in bio with a minor in computer
science. I hate to turn this into a competition, but my boyfriend is smarter than me in a lot of areas.
He has a more analytical brain, whereas I'm more creative. I have a heftier resume than him,
and I'm better at communication. I would have loved for us both to get the job, but if
not, I was fairly sure that I would get it. Also, he only decided to apply after I told him I was
applying, but that's a whole other issue that I don't want to delve into. Anyway, we both make it
into the final pool of 10, but he ends up getting the job, and I don't. I was upset, but hid my
sadness to be happy for him. I really, really wanted that job. When he got the email,
he was ecstatic, and he was running all over his dorm, excited and screamed.
I was still in the room. At the time, he already knew that I didn't get it, so it kind of hurt that he
acted in such a dramatic way. He did apologize afterwards. Anyway, he's now been working there for
about two months, and it's going great for him. But he unintentionally rubs it in my face a lot. I'm
currently working as an intern at a computer science lab at our school, and of course, I get paid
less than him and I have less benefits, but I quite like the job. He'll say stuff like,
oh, you only get paid 15 and a half an hour? That's so little. I get paid 20 an hour. Or he'll say
stuff like, hey, we had a sushi buffet today and there was so much sashimi. Did you guys get
anything? Like, no, we didn't, obviously. Thanks for asking. Other examples are, look at all the
free stuff I got. You get any free stuff this week? I can't believe I'm getting paid this much to do
basically intro stuff. I love my job so much. I definitely understand that half of this is because he actually
likes his job and can't contain his excitement. But the other half kind of comes across as insensitive,
though he might not realize it. If I didn't apply for the job and not get it, then of course I
wouldn't mind, but he knows that I tried super hard to get the job and didn't end up getting it.
Shouldn't he know to tone it down a bit? Or am I being too insensitive? I want to tell him it makes me
sad, but I don't want to come across as selfish, like just because I didn't get the job,
he can't be happy about it? Then eight days later, O.P. posted an update. A massive thanks to everyone
who gave me advice and also opened my eyes to how big of a douche my boyfriend of eight months was being.
A day after I made the post, we were hanging out in his dorm when he began talking about his work.
He wasn't necessarily bragging this time. It was more like talking about some projects they're having him do.
After a pause in the conversation, I decided to bring up my feelings about him rubbing his job in my face and constantly comparing our positions.
I said something along the lines of, I'm really, really happy for your job, and I can tell that you really love it and have a great time there.
I'm not sure if you remember, but I was actually really disappointed that I didn't get the job,
but I've been trying to move on for my disappointment.
However, I feel that you're making it harder for me to move on by constantly comparing our two positions.
Sometimes it seems like you're trying to rub the benefits of your job in my face.
I then listed a couple examples.
I've been feeling hurt over this, and I would really love it if you could stop comparing our positions,
because that's very inconsiderate,
and maybe instead we can both share a bit about our day at work
without turning it into a contest.
After saying that, my boyfriend squinted at me and said,
Are you serious?
He then proceeded to tell me that I was, as some of you guys called it,
being way too insensitive.
He also asked, why can't I be happy about my job?
And do you want me to just never talk about anything
that you don't have then because it makes you feel bad?
He also said, to my utmost astonishment, I mean, I don't see the problem with comparing the two positions.
It's obvious that my job has better benefits and perks than yours, and I'm just pointing them out.
You don't need to see that in a negative light.
There was much more BS that came out of his mouth, but after like two minutes of hearing him rant about how I'm being too insensitive and restricting his happiness,
I said, you're an absolute piece of trash.
Everything you said was not only extremely inconsiderate, but very selfish.
I really, really wanted to just yell at him and list off the hundreds of things that was wrong
with what he said, but instead I refrained and just said, dude, we're over.
He said, what?
And I got up from his bed and bolted straight out the door.
I've been ignoring his texts, calls, and Facebook messages for the past few days.
I actually feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulder.
I'm enjoying my job more, and overall, I just feel free.
On a side note, there's this cute guy who sits two computers away from me at the lab that I currently look at, a winky face.
There's nothing wrong with toot in your own horn, but to do it at someone else's expense is the mark of a terrible person.
He should be proud about his job and celebrating and, you know, sharing about his day.
But he shouldn't put down his girlfriend and make his girlfriend feel jealous.
which he was clearly, clearly doing intentionally.
Our next Reddit post is from R-slash relationship advice.
Today is my husband's birthday.
He's 35. I'm 30.
A lot of people posted photo tributes of him to celebrate.
In one of these posts, one of his colleagues posted 10 photos.
Most of them are just him at various outings or business trips.
But one of them is him sitting on a boat, looking down and laughing, with a drink in his hand,
and a woman's leg across his lap, not just resting on his lap, completely draped over his lap.
In the photo, one of his hands is holding his drink and the other is up in the air.
I'm assuming since he was mid-lap, so I don't know where his hand was resting before.
One of his other co-workers was tagged in it, so I'm assuming those were her legs.
I saw this picture and immediately called him, asking him where and when it was taken,
and why her legs were across his lap like that.
He immediately told me I needed to relax and that I was making too big a deal of things.
He told me it was taken over the summer.
At the time, I'd been stuck in a different city, which is why I hadn't been invited to a party
his other coworker had.
He said he didn't tell me about it, because at the time, I was frustrated about being stuck
in a different city.
He said his coworker only had her legs on him for a second.
He was laughing at the dog who had just been on his lap jumping off, and right after that
happened, he got up.
He's making me feel like I'm being so ridiculous for not immediately believing him,
which makes me feel like he might be telling the truth.
I don't know, it just makes me feel strange.
Then three days later, O.P. posted an update.
When my husband came home, I asked him once again about the photo.
More specifically, if there were any other instances like this that he hadn't told me about.
He again told me I was making too big of a deal about this, that it was nothing, etc.
While he was telling me about why it wasn't a big deal, he messed up the location of the photo.
It had taken place on a boat. He mistakenly said, it was just a moment at such and such's house.
Through this lie, several others unraveled. I found out that he had hung out with her a number of
times outside of work, but swears he only slept with her once. I don't believe this, but to be
honest, it doesn't matter. Once is enough, so the discrepancy is moot. I've already
spoken to my divorce lawyer. My husband has moved into our home upstate full time. Yeah, I have to
wonder if the colleague posted that photo intentionally as a way to tip you off about what the
coworker suspected or even knew to be true. That was our slash best of Redditor updates. And if you
