My mother and father have been married for 39 years. They're amazing and supportive of all their children.
Starting point is 00:02:19 I'm the eldest at 35. My brother Ian is 32. My sister, Ashley, is 29. When I was 19, my grandmother passed away and left her house to my father who never planned to return because of past trauma. I was given the house. Legally, it's my house and my name, with the agreement that I continue paying the mortgage and utility on my own. I've since finished paying it off and began remodeling. Around the time I was 24, my brother Ian moved in for a year to be closer to his job.
Starting point is 00:02:48 During this time, he paid rent and bought food and house supplies. It was a great year of bonding for us. He eventually moved out to be with his girlfriend, now wife. So now I'm 35 living in this house alone, and I get home one day to find Ashley unpacking in the extra room saying she's moving in. I got no notice of this. I talked to my parents about this, and they said, it's temporary while she's at college.
Starting point is 00:03:15 This flustered me because she's always been very anti-college and preaches that you don't need a degree to get a job, that it just puts you more in debt, blah, blah, blah. I tell them that I'm uncomfortable with this, and they just brush it off saying, Ian stayed, it'd be rude not to help your sister. The difference is that Ian is a sweetheart and Ashley is a sour patch. But my parents agree to pay Ashley's rent
Starting point is 00:03:41 and assure me it'll only be a year and I try to let it go. The issue started literally the next day, because despite my house being closer to her school, it's still too far for her, and she doesn't have bus fare. So she demanded I take her to school. After her whining, I gave in and did it, only to find out it's fashion school. My parents gave me the impression that she was doing something
Starting point is 00:04:07 to turn her life around and find a career. I have nothing against the fashion industry, but it isn't a stable path for an unemployed, nearly 30-year-old woman. The first month goes by and it's bill time. I lay it out. I didn't include the remodeling fees because I didn't think it was fair to charge her for it. And she flips out and starts screaming and crying,
Starting point is 00:04:31 how dare I ask for money? And then calls our parents and throws the phone at me and walks away. My parents explained that they can't afford to pay for both her college and her rent. And that she's my sister and I should let it go. Not only is she living in my house, but she's eating my food. She can't buy her own. and wasting my gas for this BS class. Our parents are now giving me 200 bucks a month to cover gas.
Starting point is 00:04:59 I know I must come off as a bad person trashing my sister's career path, but I feel like she doesn't have a future in this, and her grades reflected. She's incredibly negative and rude to anyone who attempts to help her. This includes her former teacher who had her transferred to a different class after an incident that she won't tell me about. She's also incredibly racist and homophobic. There are many black gay men in her school, who, in her words, are untalented and only there because they're ethnic and gay. I should mention that I'm a lesbian and her language is beyond offensive.
Starting point is 00:05:38 She, oh, geez, she won't hold back with inwards this and F slurs that. Even when I have company over and my friends politely decline my invitation. now. She regularly, almost daily, has tantrums about how she's being discriminated against, and acts like she's more stressed than medical or law school students. She feels as though her clothing is better than the grade she's receiving. I'm not a fashion expert, but I think the criticism she receives is more than fair. Her clothes are generic and look like anything you could pull off a rack at Forever 21, which wouldn't be a bad thing if she didn't keep trying to say that it's high fashion and couture. She also thinks that she is single-handedly responsible
Starting point is 00:06:27 for bringing back chokers, pink hair, braids, etc. This has turned into a book. But wait, there's more. Even though I don't agree with her career choice, I've tried to help her with marketing by making accounts on Instagram, Deepop, Etsy, and Facebook. She deleted every account once they got so much as a single comment that says, looks cheap. Then she's said that Gucci and Versace didn't get famous off social media. What do I do, Reddit? What changes can be made? I don't mind her living with me, but she should be able to buy her own food. Would it be rude to tell her that I don't want her around when I have company? Am I just being overly judgmental? Then one week later, OP posted an update. I'll start by saying, she's gone. So after my first post,
Starting point is 00:07:17 I stayed up all night reading and replying to comments, and you all made me realize how messed up the situation was. Despite that, I still wanted to give my sister Ashley a chance, because I felt like if someone didn't tell her she was being a butt, then she would just continue thinking it was okay. I made a contract. These were the conditions. She'd have two weeks to look for a job or set up a way to sell her stuff. And starting next month, she would need to start paying rent, and I'd be making her a renter with a month to month. legal contract. Once she graduates or fails, she's out. She'd have to stop with a homophobia and hate speech,
Starting point is 00:07:55 period. She'd be responsible for her own food and transportation. I will no longer be accepting gas money to take her to school. And if our parents choose to give her that money for bus fare, then that's up to them. I also made a chore list marked with her responsibilities. So on Sunday, I sat her down and told her we needed to have a talk, then presented her with the list. As expected, she flipped out, absolutely lost it, just started crying and whining, then stormed off to her room. I was waiting for the inevitable call from my parents. When I got it, I was ready to argue with them, but to my surprise, they actually agreed with me. My father pretty much said, it's about time, you grew some balls.
Starting point is 00:08:38 They also told me that if I didn't tell her to grow the hell up, then she would never learn. I got the impression that they ponder off on me so that she would get a dose of, of reality and that instead of showing it to her, I let her walk all over me. I know that my parents' call sounded a little harsh, but it really encouraged me to stand strong. After about an hour, Ashley came out of her room and said that she was ready to negotiate. I literally laughed, yeah, me too girl, and told her that this isn't a negotiation, that she'll do it or she'll need to find a new place to live. She started crying about how unfair it was. and that I was being a butthole. I told her that if everyone she meets is a butthole,
Starting point is 00:09:22 then maybe she's the butthole. She stormed out crying and didn't come home all night. Monday, she began going to school on her own, and my parents did decide to give her the $200 for bus fare and an extra 100 for groceries. When I made the first post, we were already low on food, and I usually shop on Sunday. But this week, I decided that I wouldn't, and that I'd eat out for a while instead. There was still basic stuff for sandwiches and ramen, but that wasn't enough for her. The moment she got home, she went to the fridge and threw a fit saying I'm trying to starve her out. I left and ate with my friends and had a great night. When I got back, she was giving me the silent treatment, then randomly screamed, Why are you doing this to me? I'm your effing sister. I told her that
Starting point is 00:10:10 as long as she's living with me, she's responsible for herself. I got more silent treatment all through Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday rolls around and she calls me at work asking for a ride home. I told her to take the bus and she says she doesn't have money for it since she has to buy her own food now. It's literally been four days. I flat out asked what she spent the money on because it's ridiculous and she's been taking ubers. Ubers at rush hours. At rush hours, to restaurants. I didn't pick her up, but I transferred her $5 for the bus, and she had the nerve to be upset about it. She didn't even use the five bucks, and ended up calling our brother Ian. She threw a fit in his car and blurted out that she quit school because all of this was too much pressure,
Starting point is 00:11:00 that she hates me and can't stand living with me and my BS rules, along with homophobic slurs. My brother knows about my contract with her and immediately said, Pack your stuff and get out. When I got home, he was already putting stuff in his truck, and she was sitting on the couch, crying. The moment she sees me, she just starts screaming and cursing until she's rid in the face, and Ian told her to get in the car. She left after giving the whole,
Starting point is 00:11:29 I'm never speaking to you again, speech. It's Friday, and I'm waiting to get my locks changed. My parents did not, allow Ashley to move back in with them after finding out that she quit school. So, she's going to be staying with our cousin, Amy, who's a 38-year-old military veteran, who doesn't take flack from anyone. Very fitting for the situation. Thanks for the help, Reddit. You know, the funny thing about giving people the silent treatment is that it's only effective if the other person wants to talk to you. You know, I genuinely can't tell who's worse here.
Starting point is 00:12:03 the obnoxious sister, or the parents who raised the obnoxious sister and then pawned her off to the other kids to deal with. Our next Reddit post comes from R slash advice. My daughter just turned 16. My husband and I rented a family friend's lakehouse for the weekend. We told our daughter, April, that she could invite a handful of friends. But so far, she's only invited her boyfriend, who's 17, to spend the day with us on Saturday. I asked her about a couple of her girlfriends that she's normally close to, but she recently admitted that she hasn't even told any of them about her birthday weekend.
Starting point is 00:12:35 Whatever, that's her choice. We're also allowing her younger brother, Adam, who's 14, to bring one friend. This is how we've handled birthdays in the past. The birthday kid gets the majority of the invites, while the sibling gets one person to hang out with for the day. My husband suggested that Adam invite his best friend, Nick, before we discussed it as a family, and Adam had already invited him. The problem is that April hates Nick. The issue goes back to a heated conversation when they first met about a year ago, which, coincidentally, was during the last time we rented this lakehouse.
Starting point is 00:13:08 During that visit, April invited her best friend, and Adam invited Nick. According to April, Nick called her fat. According to Adam, April called Nick fat first, and Nick responded in kind, thinking they were teasing each other. I wasn't there for this conversation, so I can't say exactly what happened. I absolutely do not condone body shaming either way. But I will say that April has a history of fighting with Adam and reporting only what he said or did while leaving out what she said or did first. So I'm hesitant to assume that Nick was completely unprovoked. April has already said that she doesn't want Nick to come.
Starting point is 00:13:45 But this morning she sent me a slew of texts saying that if Nick goes, she won't go at all and will stay home by herself. She also complained that her invite only gets to spend the day while Adam gets to stay the weekend. but she made the decision not to include any of her girlfriends. I suggested a compromise, that Nick's still come, but if there are any problems between him and April, we take him home. She rejected that. April's compromise is that we invite their cousin, Kevin, who's 16 instead. Kevin gets along with both of my kids and has stayed over at our house before.
Starting point is 00:14:19 The problem is that my husband already gave Adam the green light to invite Nick, so bringing Kevin would mean uninviting Nick. My husband feels that giving in would essentially allow April to bully us into deciding who Adam is allowed to invite. I see his point, but at the same time, this is supposed to be April's 16th birthday weekend, and I don't want her to spend it miserable or refuse to come altogether. I also talked to a coworker about this issue, and she thought it was strange that Adam would be allowed to invite a friend at all. So I'm leaving it in the capable hands of internet strangers. What would you do? Make Adam un-invite Nick and bring Kevin instead because it's April's birthday weekend?
Starting point is 00:15:01 Obviously, there's an update because this is R-slash best of updates, but like, it's her birthday. You're really going to make a girl on her sweet 16 birthday, no less, invite someone that she hates? This isn't a 16-year-old girl bullying the parents. This is the entire family bullying a 16-year-old birthday girl. What's wrong with you people? This is the easiest, clearest moral dilemma on Reddit that I've read all week. Then, two hours later, it didn't take Reddit long, they blasted her. OP posted an update.
Starting point is 00:15:35 Okay, y'all have definitely set me straight with the situation. You're all right. I usually go with my husband on things like this to keep the peace. But it's ultimately not being fair to my daughter. I already had a conversation with my husband, and he ultimately agreed that Nick will be uninvited. Although he stressed the fact that Adam should have the same veto rights as April when it's his birthday. And he asked me if I agreed with that like four times in a 10-minute phone call. It was to the point that I asked him how many times I had to say yes before he accepted it,
Starting point is 00:16:08 and he finally backed off. I texted April with the update, but she's in school so I haven't heard back yet. I've let Adam know to tell Nick that he can no longer come. Am I detecting a bit of father-son favoritism here? a classic good old boys club where the son gets extra privileges? This comment down below. See you in two years when dad now lets the brother have a girlfriend overnight. Right, I wouldn't be surprised at all.
Starting point is 00:16:35 Our next Reddit post is from R slash relationship advice. I'm posting this on behalf of my best friend. She's 25 and the guy she's dating is 30. Basically, she's been dating this guy for two years now. They live together and things are hitting in the direction of marriage and children, but they have this one reoccurring issue that keeps coming back. They both work the exact same job. That's how they met.
Starting point is 00:16:58 They work rotating shifts, so switching from days to nights to evenings. And it's hard labor, so they're both generally very exhausted. He has this mentality that she needs to cook him dinner every night and clean the house for him. He constantly calls her lazy, childish, careless, etc. If she makes herself something quick to eat, he'll literally get offended that she didn't make him something as well. They had a conversation the other day about how he wants her to make him
Starting point is 00:17:26 some kind of liver soup. He kept saying, it's so easy, just try it. She said that she doesn't like liver, and if he wanted the soup and it was so easy to make, why won't he make it? And he basically said that if he cooks now, she'll never learn to cook for him. She's tired of the name calling
Starting point is 00:17:44 and feeling useless for not being a housewife while working a full-time job. sometimes more than 44 hours a week. I feel like it's ridiculous for him to expect this, but I don't know if this is just a normal part of living with your spouse. Then two weeks later, OP posted an update. So basically, when I wrote the last post, I knew her boyfriend was a dick and had some views he needed to change.
Starting point is 00:18:07 I never really thought about how abusive it was, though, or the extent of how bad it was. I sent her this post and told her to send it to him. He said that it was biased, and he wouldn't explain how. He said that we were plotting against him. He has read it. I welcomed him to post a reply and explain his side
Starting point is 00:18:29 and how it was biased, but he never did. There obviously isn't an explanation for it. They had a huge fight over it, where he called her childish and said he didn't want to be with her anymore. Surprise, suddenly when she's calling him out, he wants to end things. She told him that she wanted couple of. counseling and that she wanted to try to work on it because she's dumb and in love. They decided to try
Starting point is 00:18:54 and they were okay for about two days until the next fight. He basically flipped the whole thing around on how she's childish and he doesn't want to raise kids with someone so childish. And he actually said that he felt like he'd have to do all the work. He ended up breaking up with her, packing his stuff, and leaving. We walked and I heard a lot more about how abusive he really was. And I'm so glad he he broke up with her because I don't think she ever would have left him. I'm not a doctor and I can't diagnose anything, but based on a few internet searches, he seemed like a huge narcissist. She's heartbroken. But, you know, sometimes the trash really does take itself out. I'm going to read this top comment from the night terror. Man, calling her lazy, the childish one who needs to grow up,
Starting point is 00:19:42 there's projecting and then there's projecting. That was our slash best of redditor update. And if you like this content, be sure to follow my podcast because I put out new Reddit podcast episodes every single day.
