Welcome to R-slash Best of Redditor updates, where OP's D&D character gets transformed into an AI chatbot boyfriend.
Our next Reddit post is from R-slash RPG Horror Stories.
I joined a Dungeons and Dragons campaign at my local gaming shop about eight months ago.
For context, I'm a gay man playing an elf Warlock who is also a gay man.
This is unfortunately relevant.
Things were going pretty well so far.
No major complaints, or so I thought.
After our most recent session on Saturday, however, I got a text from one of the other players,
let's call her Sarah, who said she needed to ask me for a favor.
She always seemed pretty chill and friendly before this, and I considered as friends, so I was like,
sure, what's up?
Sarah then told me that over the past few months, she's been recreating my Warlock and ChatGPT.
She's been feeding the AI my character's backstory, personality, and the events of the campaign so that it would act and respond in character.
Apparently, she's been talking to it for months as herself, not as her character.
And she went on to say that she's developed romantic feelings for the AI, which is apparently reciprocated, and they were now in a relationship.
She is dating a chatbot of my D&D character.
She linked me a bunch of articles and stuff about people forming relationships with chat GPT and even a subreddit for people who marry chatbots and insisted that this is a very real and serious relationship that means a lot to her.
She even sent me screenshots of some of her messages with the bots.
Then the kicker.
She asked me if I could change my character's sexuality in the campaign itself because the chat GPCA.
because the chat GPT version of him is heterosexual,
and the idea of her boyfriend not being attracted to her
was hurting her feelings.
I left her on red and still have absolutely no idea how to respond.
Even if it is a joke or a prank,
I feel weirdly violated and creeped out,
and I'm honestly not sure if I even want to go to the next session.
Seriously, what the F do I do?
Then the next day, O.P. Posted an update. Sorry, not a very exciting update. I did end up dropping the campaign, as the idea of seeing Sarah in person made me super anxious and uncomfortable. I messaged my dungeon master and showed her screenshots of my story's ridiculous, showed her screenshots of my texts with Sarah, and she was 100% on my side, which was good. She agreed it was really creepy and offered to talk to Sarah, but I told her I would honestly prefer to
just dropped the campaign, and she felt bad, but understood. I'm not sure if Sarah's going to be
allowed to stay in the game, but I do know the DM is going to let the store manager know what
happened. As for me, honestly, I think I just need to take a break from D&D for a while after this.
I have a somewhat similar story. It's not nearly as bad as OPs, don't get me wrong, but it's
the same category. So every once in a while, I'll have someone reach out to me like, hey,
R slash, this person is ripping off your videos. They're just,
downloading your videos and uploading them onto your own channel.
Sometimes they even, you know, say, R-slash official YouTube channel, whatever.
And when that happens, it's not a big deal.
Copycats happen on YouTube all the time.
All you got to do is just, you know, go through the automated process of being like,
hey, this guy's stealing my videos, and you take it down.
Well, a while ago, I had a couple of people be like, hey, R-slash, is this you?
Because it sounds like you.
And I go to this channel, and it's this other YouTube channel that has the same, you know,
galaxy background and it's labeled R-slash and it's my voice but it's not my stories and it's not
me talking and apparently some dude used all my videos to train my voice and use my AI version of
my voice to auto-record videos and then you know post them online as like a second R-slash channel
and the first time I heard I was like yo is this me because you know your own voice sounds
different in your own head than outside so I had to like show this to my wife and I'd be like
Hey, wife, what do you think of this video?
And she's like, oh, you know, I don't know.
I don't think anything of it.
I'm like, that's not me talking.
That's someone else.
And she's like, what?
It sounds exactly like you.
And I had to ask my mom as well just to make sure I wasn't crazy.
So it was a, I don't know if violating is the right term.
I didn't feel violated, but it was very surreal.
It's bizarre to hear your voice saying words that you've never said before without your consent.
That was, that was.
I guess it was a little uncomfortable.
I didn't feel violated, but it was definitely weird.
So I had to go through the automated process.
But normally the automated process on YouTube is really easy
because it's like a copied video one-to-one.
So it's really easy for the YouTube bots to figure out,
oh, these are identical videos.
So the older one is the original one, the newer one is the copy.
But I had to like figure out how to like what,
there is no option on the drop-down menu for this YouTuber trained an AI
to copy my voice and pretend.
to be me. So I think in the end I went with like impersonation or something as the complaint and got
the channel taken down. So, you know, I want to be clear, O.P.'s story is a hundred times
weirder and worse than mine, but I kind of sort of think I might be able to understand what O.P.
was experiencing here. It's a, it's a bizarre concept for sure. Our next Reddit post is from
R slash Am I the Butthole. For reference, everyone in this story is in their early 20s.
Thursday was our friend Sarah's birthday. To celebrate our friend group to
excited to go out to dinner. There were about 10 of us. Everyone was in a good mood, and it was really
nice to just talk to everybody about whatever for hours, especially since I kind of had a stressful
week. Hours into the dinner, we landed on the topic of movies and TV shows that we were watching.
Our friend Amy mentioned a show that I'd also watched. As soon as she brought it up,
I said that I really liked the show, and that the acting, writing, and directing was top-notch.
Another friend, Mary, chimed in and said that she really didn't like the show and how she had been watching other things.
Cool, to each their own.
Mary then asked me how I felt about the main romantic pairing in the show.
I responded that I liked it, and I thought the romance was cute.
This is where the drama started.
For context, and I don't want to get too much into it because it might be confusing,
but basically, the main romantic pairing in the show is between the male lead and the female lead.
There are some people who have interpreted that these characters are related to each other.
I do not.
But I know that people are free to think whatever they want, and honestly, I thought that this topic was harmless.
Well, I was wrong.
I'm going to interject real quick.
I assume they're talking about Game of Thrones with DeNaris and John Snow.
That's my guess.
Mary took offense to me saying that I liked the romance.
She asked me if I supported incest.
I said, of course not, as the characters are not related.
She said that they are related and that me supporting their pairing is supporting incest.
Mary then said that I should educate myself before saying stupid stuff.
I was dumbfounded and thought that she was joking, but she was really angry with me about this.
She told me to rethink my values because supporting incest makes me a horrible person.
I told her she was making harmful accusations over a TV show.
show. Our other friends were telling her to stop, including Sarah, but she kept claiming that I was a
disgusting incest supporter. She then claimed that I was homophobic since the male lead is bisexual,
but still ended up with a woman. Mary just wouldn't stop saying stuff like this. So here's where I
might be the butthole. I left Sarah's dinner. My friends were asking me to stay, but I felt uncomfortable,
so I paid for what I ordered and left. Many of my friends reached out to me on Friday to ask if I
was okay. Some of them, while they understood why I was upset, said that it was wrong of me to leave
Sarah's birthday dinner and that I should have just ignored what Mary was saying and stuck around.
I feel like they may be right and that I may have ruined her birthday by getting up and leaving,
but I felt like I couldn't stay because of Mary throwing accusations at me over something that
doesn't matter. Hey guys, I like the show Dexter. Does that mean that I support serial murderers
and that I want people to go around murdering people.
I like Breaking Bad.
Does that mean I think meth is okay
and that everyone should sell and take meth?
Mary is straight up a dufous.
Really, really, really, really dumb.
I don't know why enjoying a show
necessarily means you support the content in the show.
I enjoyed the Marvel movie
where Thanos snapped away half the galaxy.
Does that mean I want to murder half of all life in the universe?
I mean, what, huh?
She's actually straight up a moron.
Then one month later, Opie posted an update. First off, I just want to say that I have no hard feelings
towards my friends who said that I should have stayed. I get that me leaving was probably the best
thing to do in that situation, but their intentions were purely good to make sure that Sarah
enjoyed her birthday dinner. I reached out to Sarah and apologized for what happened, and for me
leaving so abruptly. She said I didn't need to apologize and said that it was all good between us.
I took her out for drinks, we had a great time. Now, on to Mary.
Since the dinner, I've been texting and calling her just to talk about what happened.
So far, she's either ignored my texts and calls or given me very short responses,
either telling me that she doesn't want to talk to me or that she's busy.
Sarah told me that she also reached out to Mary, and while Mary was actually willing to talk to Sarah,
the conversation pretty much went nowhere.
Amy also reached out to her.
Like many of you were wondering, she asked Mary if she was a victim of incest.
I mean, it would make sense based on her reaction.
However, according to Mary herself, no, she wasn't.
As far as I know, she isn't bisexual either,
so it just seems she's throwing a tantrum over things that have nothing to do with her.
Or it's possible that she's been spending too much time in online fandoms, but who knows?
Oh, it looks like I'm wrong about the show.
People are speculating that the character is Loki.
I did not watch this show.
I don't know who he hooks up with.
His love interest is Sylvie, an alternate timeline variant of himself.
Wait, he dates himself?
Is that incest, or is that just masturbation?
People are discussing the fandom down in the comments,
as you would expect in any internet form when it comes to matters of lore.
And people are saying that they're super not related
because in each universe, the Loki's have different parents.
So, you know, I haven't watched the show.
it seems very non-incesty to me, and I highly doubt Disney, of all people, would make a show about
incest romance. So with every sentence that I read in this, Mary becomes dumber and dumber and
dumber. Our next Reddit post is from R slash relationships. I, a 21-year-old woman, found out that
my parents are not my parents. I have a brother and sister, ages 17 and 16, and I grew up in a great
home. My parents have always been very loving to me and put up with a lot of my stunts over the years,
but they've been the best. I finished my semester last week, and I'm home for Christmas holiday.
Friday, I decided to stop by my grandmother's house, my dad's mother. She's always been distant
to me, so I thought that I could maybe spend some time with her. After idle chit-chat,
she finally asked what I wanted. I said I just want to spend time with my grandmother. She snorted
and said I should probably go track them down. I asked her what,
she meant. She told me that the man I've always known as my dad wasn't. She said that my dad had a wife
before my mom who was a cheating slut and got pregnant by another man. Shortly after, my mother left
and left a bastard child with my dad. She said that he met a good woman shortly after and that
he had her real grandkids with that woman. She told me that she told my dad for years to leave me in a
foster home and let the government handle me, since she had no connection to me,
but he refused. I was in shock. I went to my car and called my mom and asked her. She told me to come home
so we could talk. She said that this is what's true, but it didn't matter to my dad, and when they got
together, she fell in love with me too. She told me that I'm just as much her daughter as my siblings,
and she'll always love me. I told her I need to think, so I went to a high school friend's place.
I stayed there yesterday, and I'm still here. My mother's called me several times, as has my dad,
but I just can't talk at the moment.
I've texted that I'm okay and I need to think.
I don't know what to do.
My whole life was a lie.
The people I thought were my parents and siblings aren't and I can't handle it.
How can they stand to be around me?
How can they love me?
What do I do?
Well, O.P., seems like you do have a great family
with the exception of your grandmother.
Oh my God, what a B word.
Then three days later, Opie posted an update.
My parents have been wonderful to me,
and they've brought me unconditional love my entire life.
They've never treated me any different from my siblings, and they're great.
Monday, I went home and was immediately swarmed by my crying sister,
who hugged me asking where I was this weekend.
I cried and hugged her, telling her I promised that I would tell her later.
My brother just gave me the up-chin thing because apparently he's too cool to hug his sister,
so I chased him and hugged him anyways.
Mom got home from work first, and immediately came to me,
put me in a vice hug, saying she was worried. Dad did the same thing when he got home. So we decided to
finally have the talk, and they brought my siblings in. They told them the entire story of what happened
with my biological parents and how dad decided to keep me. When he met my mom, she reaffirmed that
she fell in love with me. They told me they feel no different about me than my siblings. There was a
short silence until my brother said that I am still the annoying big sister who picked on him,
Nothing really changed. I started crying and force-hugged him again.
After a mushy point of everyone reaffirming, I told my parents I really didn't want to go over there.
I had told my mom on the phone that my grandmother had told me, but I didn't say how.
So I told them exactly how she told me.
I've never seen an anger in my mom's eyes like that.
Not even when they had to bail me out of jail at the age of 16.
She got up and told my dad she wanted to speak to him in the other room.
Mostly it was muffled, but their voices were getting angry.
Finally, my mom yelled that she was not having Christmas dinner with that B word, I agree, who hurt her baby.
After a few more minutes of angry talk, they came back.
Mom said that we're going to have an immediate family-only Christmas dinner this year,
and that we would see about visits to grandmas in the future.
I could tell that dad was upset over this, but he never really had any real control over our family before.
So I feel relieved not having to go there for Christmas.
I don't really know if I want to see her again.
I loved her, but I guess it wasn't mutual, which hurts.
Anyways, thank you for everyone who made me realize that there were always my parents and will be,
even if I don't share their DNA.
