Starting point is 00:00:22 free of charge. BetMGM operates pursuant to an operating agreement with Eye Gaming, Ontario. Welcome to R slash Choosing Beggers, where someone gets a free car and is still mad about it. Our next post is from Jim Fan. Someone saw that I needed a car and donated one to me. I do have to say that while it's extremely kind and I'm very appreciative, they didn't even think about filling it up or giving me a gas card. When I went to the gas station, luckily I had enough cash on hand to get me two days worth of gas. Just wish they would have thought about that.
Starting point is 00:00:59 But thank you to the kind person who gave me their car. They wanted to stay anonymous. Still looking for work if anyone's hiring. Thanks. Well, another cool layer to this is if OP can't even afford gas, then that definitely means they can't afford insurance, which means they're driving around illegally. Our next Reddit post is from rabid mortician,
Starting point is 00:01:19 and this comes from a post where someone was asking for $5,000 to help pay off taxes. Success! We did it! we saved the house from the taxman. We raised the money to pay the back property tax. The house is safe and the tax sale canceled. I want to give a big thank you to all my supporters and subscribers who helped out. I'm grateful for your help. I appreciate you guys so much.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Without your help, we would have lost the house. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Wow, what an emotional roller coaster ride that was. We did it. With all your help, we did it. Then he made another post. Just because we saved the house doesn't mean the bills stop. I still have a lot of work to do and lots of expenses to pay,
Starting point is 00:02:03 both for the house and my off-grid magazine and business. If this community has ever brought you value, show your support by subscribing to my magazine. Then he includes his Stripe, Venmo, Cash App, and PayPal. Then he makes another post. I need a little help. I'm down to my last $1.24. And I'm out of my BP medications.
Starting point is 00:02:24 I'm low on food. and water. All my money just went to save the house last week, and I'm broke now. I'm going to try to to reach out to the local food bank for some food and the health department for my blood pressure medication, but gas and my normal bills don't stop. I have to pay them, or I lose the business, and I can't afford that. I'm going through an extremely stressful situation right now, and my options are limited. I'd appreciate some help. I'm not asking for a handout, just a few signups for my magazine. That'll help me through this. Just a couple of signups a day, can keeps everything going. Thanks, and then he includes his Stripe, Venmo, Cash App, and PayPal. But he's not
Starting point is 00:03:01 looking for a handout, guys. Then another post. I'm about to have everything shut off if I can't pay the few bills I have. I'm down to less than $1 in my account, and all my bills are coming due now. If that happens, then everything gets shut off, and I can't keep everything going. I'm asking my supporters to help out a little. Best way to help is to grab a subscription to my magazine. If that's not your thing, use the links to donate. Thank you. I appreciate your supports. Then another post. My current mood. Seriously about to shut this group down right now. I'm disgusted by the ignorant cruelty, the stupidity, the lies, manipulation and straight up hate. It's disgusting. None of what I did for the last 15 years apparently matters. It doesn't matter that I helped
Starting point is 00:03:49 millions of people chase and achieve their off-grid dreams. The moment I hit hard times, homeless, fighting for my livelihood and inheritance, and when I dare ask for help and ban those that mock and disrespect me, suddenly I'm the villain. People love the inspiration until you're the one struggling. Then they hate it. Worse, they despise you for calling out the hypocrisy and toxic abuse. Like the selfish, narcissistic buttholes they are, they flip the script and paint you as the bad guy. Maybe it's true what they say. You either die a hero or live long enough to be the villain. I'm okay with being the villain, if it means destroying the real enemies of humanity. I don't mind this kind of villainy one bit. Fighting back against greed, corruption,
Starting point is 00:04:36 selfishness, and cruelty isn't wrong. It's necessary. In fact, it's kind of heroic to tear down the hate, corruption, greed, and hypocrisy rotting our world. I believe it's okay to hate, hate, It's okay to be intolerant of the intolerant toxic abusive buttholes that are trying desperately to destroy humanity. It's okay to hate bigotry, greed, and the corruption that jacks up the cost of living so high that independence equality and off-grade freedom become radical acts of defiance. The real villains aren't the one pushing back against genuine hate, greed, and corruption. In the comments, people are encouraging this guy to go get a job, and he says, You don't get it, nor do you want to.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Go be a good little weird. Wage slave. The thing I don't understand about this guy is he's apparently trying to make a, I guess, an off-grid living and survival magazine. So if he's off-grid, what bills does he need to pay? Electricity, internet, water? He's off-grid, dude. So he's apparently been building an off-grid life for 15 years and become a professional, and he's still not completely off-grid after all that time and all that work. Why would anyone want to read this guy's opinion on some survival off-grid magazine? Our next reply is from Signal Atlas. I listed a couch as free pickup last month because I was moving and needed it gone. Good condition, just a regular three-cushion couch. Nothing wrong with it.
Starting point is 00:06:01 Genuinely free. Photos included. First to confirm pickup gets it. Within 20 minutes, I get 11 messages. The first person confirmed Saturday morning pickup. Great, done, sort it. The second asked if I could hold it until Sunday. I said sorry, first come first served. The third asked if I could help them load it and then hold it two weeks while they found someone to help since I couldn't do heavy lifting. I said two weeks was too long with my move coming up.
Starting point is 00:06:28 Then the fourth message arrived. They asked if I would take 20 bucks less than the listing price. The couch was free. I reread my listing to confirm that I hadn't made a typo. I replied asking what they meant since the item was listed at no cost. They explained that they wanted me to pay them $20 to come collect it because gas was expensive, and they'd be doing me a favor by taking it off my hands. I genuinely sat there for a second, trying to parse this as something other than what it was.
Starting point is 00:06:59 I couldn't. I told them the item was already spoken for. The original person came Saturday, was perfectly pleasant, the couch fit in their truck without any issue. I threw in a lamp as well. They seemed happy, I was happy. The fourth person was not part of this happiness, and I think that was the right outcome. Everyone in the comments is suggesting not to list items for free, because then you filter out all the crazies. Our next Reddit post is from Atlas Vector.
Starting point is 00:07:26 I was moving to a smaller place and couldn't take one of my houseplants. She's about four years old, healthy, three big leaves coming in. Good root system. I posted her on the neighborhood app, giving her away for free to a good home and included one photo. I expected maybe three messages. I received 26. This would be fine, except that nobody said, I'll take it. Every single person submitted what I can only describe as a formal application.
Starting point is 00:07:56 The first message was four paragraphs about the woman's existing plant collection, her watering philosophy, and the fact that she has a south-facing window that gets beautiful afternoon lights. Another person sent me a photo of their apartment windowsill as evidence of their qualifications. Someone mentioned they'd recently lost a plant and were ready to love again. I want to be clear that I was giving away a house plant, not rehoming a golden retriever. By message 12, I had developed a rubric in my head without meaning to. I was actually evaluating these people. One guy just wrote,
Starting point is 00:08:36 I want it, with no further context, and I found myself feeling like he hadn't put in sufficient effort, which is an insane thing to feel about a free plant transaction. I gave it to the fourth person who messaged, a woman who said that she had a big empty corner that needed something, and that she'd always wanted to try a monstera, which is the plant. Normal answer, no essay. She came that evening, looked at the plant a second, said, Oh, she's beautiful, quietly to herself like she didn't know I could hear, and carried her out. That felt like the right ending.
Starting point is 00:09:10 25 other people would probably disagree. Our next post is from Guy Peddles. I recently moved for work and found a decent apartment listing. Rent was fair, location was perfect, and the landlord seemed normal at first. We scheduled a viewing, everything looks good, I tell him I'm interested. Then he starts explaining his conditions. He says he prefers someone, low impact. I'm like, okay, I work most of the day anyways. Then he clarifies, no cooking with strong
Starting point is 00:09:40 smells. He's specifically listed onions, garlic, and fried food. So basically cooking? Showers should be kept under five minutes to manage water usage. No guests at all. Not even just one friend stopping by. Laundry only once every two weeks. No working from home because it uses too much electricity. Light should be off by 10 p.m. unless absolutely necessary. At this point, I'm thinking he just wants an empty apartment that pays him rent. But it gets better. He says, I'm willing to be flexible on rent if you're not around too much. Ideally, someone who travels a lot. So I ask, half joking. So you basically want someone who pays rent, but doesn't live here? He looks me dead in the eye and says, Exactly. That's the perfect tenant. Ah yes, my dream home. A place where I can't eat, exist, or turn on the lights, but I can definitely pay for. I told them I'll think about it, but never showed up again. We had this interesting exchange down in the comments, Dustmopper says, this guy should own a gym instead. Their perfect customers keep paying, but never actually show up, and there are plenty of those. And then Jeremiah replies, gyms in the U.S. are built.
Starting point is 00:10:58 on this principle. I used to be a physical trainer manager for Retro. The rough stat is that 90% of the people who pay for a monthly membership do not use it regularly. Only about 10% of the gym's members use the gym on a weekly basis. If all 100% of gym memberships use the gym weekly, the cost for the gym would go way up due to wear, tear, and water usage. Not to mention it'd be too packed, so it'd be no longer profitable. And another reply from couldn't be helped. When I was looking for an apartment back in college, I peaked on Craigslist and I had no other options. There was a post from a woman who specifically wanted another female roommate who paid her rent, but who lived at her boyfriend's house. Specifically, she wanted someone to help with the rent, but the only thing you could do with this apartment was take your parents there a couple of times to prove that you weren't living with your boyfriend.
Starting point is 00:11:53 And she wanted something like $600 a month for this, back in 2000. No idea why you would keep paying her after that first time, but I hope she found what she was looking for. Our next post is from Kristen. My dad just discovered Facebook Marketplace, and I was honestly worried people were going to eat him alive because he's the nicest guy on Earth. But he just sent me this screenshot, and I think he's doing just fine. I want the free TV. I can come by next Tuesday at 11. Sorry, I need it gone today. Someone's coming at 5 p.m. That's literally so rude. I already told my kids were getting a TV. Can you tell the other person no and hold it until Tuesday?
Starting point is 00:12:34 I'll give you a five-star review. I'll hold a spot for you in my thoughts and prayers. I'm reporting you to Facebook. Lady, report him for what? For keeping you in his thoughts and prayers? Seems like a nice guy if you ask me. Our next reply is from Flux Ranger. I put up a straightforward listing for a spare bedroom on Facebook for $650 a month.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Private room, shared kitchen and bathroom, utilities included, five minutes from downtown. It's a fair price for the area. I checked comparable listings before posting. Within two hours, I had about 12 messages. Eleven of them were normal. Then there was Tyler. Tyler opened with, Would you take $400? Which, fine, people try that. I said no. He came back with $450. I said no again and explained that utilities alone run me about $120 a month, so I wasn't. really in a position to go lower. He said that he understood and then immediately asked if I would consider $500 to start with a raise after three months once he'd proven himself as a tenant.
Starting point is 00:13:38 I want to be clear that I'm renting a room, not hiring an employee on a probationary period. I said no. He then pivoted and asked if I would consider a work exchange. He said that he was a freelance photographer and could do a full professional shoot of the house, which I could use for future listings and social media content. I don't have social media from my house. I'm not a boutique hotel. I said that wasn't really something I needed. He said I was being short-sighted because quality listing photos increased booking rate significantly, and he could link me to articles about this. I said I wasn't running a booking business. I was renting a room in my own home, and I was going to go ahead and move on. He replied that he hoped I found the right fit
Starting point is 00:14:25 in a tone that somehow felt passive aggressive through text, and then left me on red when I wished him luck. The room was rented by the next morning to someone who just said, is it still available? I can move in on the first. And that was the entire conversation. That was our slash choosing beggars.
