Our next reddit post is from the music fella.
I live in Asia and just purchased a new house. Now, the previous owners were family friends who
needed cash urgently and haven't been living in my country for nearly three years. So I got it for
a great price in the middle of the capital city. The sale was finalized at the start of this month
and I moved in right after. The house was definitely a fixer-upper as the previous owners
had left mid renovation
and the main door was locked with just a padlock, not even a door lock.
The house had no gate, meaning anyone could just walk right on in.
The first day I moved in, someone's bike was parked in the garage.
I just parked it on the road the same day that I had a gate installed.
An angry man was knocking on my gate later and I didn't bother answering,
but through my window I could see him giving up and taking the bike after 15 minutes.
So already, I wasn't digging the neighborhood, but I didn't have any incidents after that.
Aside from people not knowing that this was no longer an abandoned house, so my gate was blocked
often, but a no parking sign on my gate fixed that issue. Last week I was having a shower in my bathroom and I noticed my water pressure was lower
than usual.
I also heard my next door neighbor's water pump going.
Now this neighbor, an old guy, lived in a three story house, the first story being the
lowest and the one that he lived in.
The other two floors were rented out to tenants.
This guy was not happy about the house being sold, and voiced many concerns to my friends,
the previous owners.
He was super angry about it, and my friends did warn me, but I'm a six foot tall guy
with three dogs.
No way he was doing anything, and yep, he didn't.
So with this living situation, a water pump is needed to pump water to the tanks on the
roof since the public supply pressure isn't enough to get it up three stories.
Now I heard the neighbor's water pump going and I was immediately suspicious.
Sure, it could be a coincidence, but it wouldn't hurt to check it out.
I waited till the neighbor's pump turned off, then turned on a different tap in the
house and sure enough, the pressure was back to normal.
This made me even more suspicious. But if he was stealing water from my house, it also made sense.
The water bills had been going up over the years that this house wasn't lived in.
But the house also had some water leaks. So previously, I had chalked up the increase in
water bill price to the leaks, even though the bills were too high to be caused
by just leaks. But now, it was starting to make sense. At some point in the last three years,
this old miser thought that he would save the cost of paying for water and waltzed onto my property
and started siphoning water from my lines. I couldn't find where exactly he was siphoning
water from, but after checking my pressure
multiple times, I was pretty sure.
So I sat on this for a few days, wondering if I should confront him, go the legal path
or just let it be.
Now water in my country is very cheap.
My total bill, even with washing three animals, a car every week and watering my garden only
costs like five bucks a month.
And that's even with the neighbor
stealing some of it. But it wasn't about how much I was paying or who was paying for it. It's about
entitled old people who think that they're deserving of using other people's resources
without paying for it and then getting away with it. It didn't sit right with me and I really wanted
to teach him a lesson. What I did was really simple. I just turned off my water from the mains.
I wouldn't have to break onto his property, nor would I be breaking any loss.
It was the best way of getting back at him without needing to even lift a muscle.
So on Monday, just four days ago, I waited till the pump flicked on and then I turned
off the supply.
Now the way household tanks work in my country is that there's a ball
valve in the tank which detects the level of water and turns on the pump. If the level doesn't
increase, the valve stays open which electronically sends a signal to the pump to stay on until the
level gets to a point at which the valve closes and also shuts off the pump. However, my neighbor's
water level was not increasing and anyone knows that starving a pump of water
is not a good idea.
My expectation was that I would burn out his pump and cause issues with his tenants.
What I didn't account for is that my neighbor's pump running constantly would mess up the
fuses by constantly drawing power overnight and absolutely destroying his wiring.
If he had decided to upgrade his household
wiring to a more modern standard, this would have been prevented. Clearly, his house had
90s era wiring. At around 3am, I heard all the residents in my neighbor's house waking up and
talking in hushed voices about why their house in the neighborhood doesn't have power or water.
I found out about the power part because the tenants started shouting at their
landlord. Our tenant protection laws are very important and power and water are classified
as essential even on a state level. Cutting those services are grounds for lawsuits,
unless due to weather or some unavoidable reason. In this case, the landlord is responsible for
keeping the house wiring up to date and in good condition, alongside a supply of water.
So the tenants were not happy, and one of them immediately moved out two days later
when they learned that the power and water wouldn't be returning the very same day
this happened.
Both tenants lodged a complaint with the police, and if a person is in clear breach of laws,
the police have the authority to fine or penalize
the person without a court judgment.
So now, the landlord lost both of his tenants and had to pay a fine of 500 bucks, which
is a lot of money in our country.
He also had to refund the security deposits of both tenants, and he can't rent out those
apartments until both issues are fixed, which will cost him even more money.
As of right now, he's moving out on Sunday to his daughter's place since he can't
afford to live alone.
Those tenants were his only source of income, and he's a retired mechanic so he has no
other income.
He did find out why the pump motor kept drawing power overloaded and the wiring burned out.
He came by to my gate and asked me if I turned off my water, and I said, oh yeah.
My tank had a new leak on a pipe, and I turned it off until the next day so a plumber could
come by to fix it.
Y'all, the look on this guy's face!
He tried to keep a straight face, but I just knew that he was holding back.
He just said, oh, okay, and went back inside.
I'm not sure if he knows that I know, but I don't care because he can't do anything.
I'm getting a plumber down next week to correct my plumbing and remove any pipes that
leave my property.
So I got rid of my water issue and I got rid of a neighbor who could potentially be a pain
in the butt by simply flicking a tap off.
Two birds, one stone, I'd say.
Our next Reddit post is from Friends Revenge.
Last year I started hanging out with this really fun group of girls that I met through
my master's program.
I was in a really bad place, and these girls embraced me right away.
There were about five of us in this girl group, and I loved all of them.
Well, I loved all except one.
Let's call her Karen.
Karen was mean.
Karen was catty.
She was the wildest girl in the group.
She always wanted to party.
She always showed up late at the university.
And she was just so fake.
Karen and I had the same focus in our master's program, so I, unfortunately, had to spend
a lot of time with her.
That quality time together made Karen feel very comfortable around me, to the point where
she thought that she could say anything to me.
During that time, she talked so much trash about every girl that we hung out with.
I'm talking really mean stuff.
She also continually belittled and talked down to me.
She questioned my intelligence all the time and always tried to undermine me and make
me feel less about myself.
Now I put up with Karen because I loved the other girls and they just couldn't see how
toxic she was.
Karen also rented a room from one of the girls in my group.
Let's call her Dolly.
Dolly is the sweetest girl I've ever met. I've only known her for a year, and she was already like
a sister to me. She's the typical Southern Belle type. All bubbly personality, the strong accent,
but she would literally give you everything she had if you asked for it. Karen regularly treated
Dolly terribly. She was late on rent, she would borrow and then ruin her clothes, and she never cleaned.
But Dolly didn't say anything because she knew that Karen came from a bad home life,
and she wanted her to feel safe in their apartment.
Seriously, Dolly is an angel.
Now the offense.
In my program, all the master's students are also teaching assistants or research assistants.
So one day, after submitting all of our students' midterm grades, our group decided to go out
and have a celebratory drink.
Dolly, however, didn't accompany us because she was going over to her boyfriend's house.
The rest of us headed to the Irish pub right off campus.
We all had either classes ourselves or were teaching the next day, so most of us don't
drink that much.
Except for Karen.
She gets drunk, like face on sideways rip roaring drunk.
This was not unusual.
Karen was known for getting super drunk all the time, but she'd really been struggling
with managing her teaching and her own classes, so she went for it extra hard.
Two hours after we got there, the rest of us had had one, maybe two drinks and eaten
food to help us stay sober.
Karen, on the other hand, could barely stand.
Unfortunately, I lived in the same complex as Karen, and since Dolly wasn't there,
I had to take her home.
On the way home, Karen starts talking about Dolly.
This twatsicle was so drunk that she had
no filter. Karen starts saying that Dolly is a dumb, inbred, southern bimbo and the only reason
that our faculty advisor liked Dolly so much was that she had big tits. She also let it slip that
she had been sexting Dolly's boyfriend and intended to screw him.
Apparently, they'd been sending nudes for some time, and Dolly's boyfriend had even
been sexting Karen while Dolly was over at his house that night.
After telling me all this, Karen promptly fell asleep in my passenger seat.
At this point, I'm in shock, but I know that I can't let this stand.
You could mess with me, but don't mess with my friends.
The Revenge
My first reaction was to kick Karen out of my car, but I thought better of it.
Instead, I dropped her off at her apartment, tucked her into bed, and grabbed her phone.
Using her thumb to unlock her phone, I first found all the messages between Karen and Dolly's
boyfriend.
I took screenshots and sent them to myself, deleting the screenshots and messaged myself
after.
Then, I turned off Karen's alarm for the next day.
As I mentioned, my university is very strict about the attendance of their students, and
I knew for a fact that Karen already had at least two warnings regarding missed and late
classes.
The next day, Karen didn't show up for the lab that she taught as a teaching assistant.
She called in midway through the day and said that she had the flu, but unfortunately for
Karen, an anonymous person had sent to our faculty advisor showing a video of her doing
Irish car bombs the night before.
This anonymous message also came with a short note explaining that the last couple of times
Karen had called in, she had been hungover and lying as well.
The next day, I showed Dolly the messages between Karen and Dolly's now ex-boyfriend.
Dolly freaked out.
I had never seen someone so mild-mannered lose their cool before, but Dolly snapped.
She then told me that Karen was two months late on rent and this was the last straw.
Dolly went home that night and told Karen she had a week to get the hell out of her
apartment and pay Dolly what she owed.
When Karen said that I was a liar and making stuff up to come between them, Dolly showed
Karen the messages.
According to Dolly, Karen went silent.
What more could she say?
Within the next two weeks, Karen was crashing on some friend's couch and she was placed
on academic suspension.
Apparently, her grades sucked just as much as her personality.
That combined with her lying and attendance problems caused the university to pull her
funding.
I still have to
see her every now and then, but she now knows better than to talk to me or anyone in our group.
We pretty much all cut her out of our lives. Sometimes I feel like I went too far, but then
I remember how smug she looked telling me that she was going to steal my best friend's boyfriend.
And then I feel much better.
Our next Reddit post is from shelluser.
After my girlfriend moved to her apartment closer to both her sister and myself, she
obviously wanted internet.
Although she isn't fully tech savvy, she does know her basics and thus explicitly asked
the provider if she should be worried about the admin slash admin kind of WiFi protection.
She was assured that it was fully safe out of the box.
In fact, just press a button to connect your laptop and your WiFi network should be fully
secured.
The incident.
So, a few months or years later, my girlfriend started to notice that her internet speed
went down.
This became very apparent while video chatting with some of her family members in Japan.
Like I said, my girlfriend knows her basics, so she knew that it didn't have to be the
internet connection itself.
It could also be her laptop, or maybe the network cables that eroded due to age.
She decided to cover as many options as possible before contacting her ISP support desk, so
she asked me for help.
I'm a geek, and I've worked with computers for over 30 years now, mostly as a systems admin,
but also as IT manager or co-manager. So, a visit to my girlfriend AND a chance to show off my
LEET skills? Hell yeah! It took me a moment, but I discovered the issue. Someone was LEECHING her
WiFi. I was quite angry about the ISP's incompetence as well as the
blatant disrespect for my girlfriend's privacy. Maybe a bit too pissed, but yeah. The revenge.
So I suggested that we replace this bad router for a professional device. She agreed and we
bought her a new router together. Now, even though I consider her previous router a piece of garbage,
I still have to admit that it did provide some very useful features like a syslog service. It
could also use USB storage. So I turned on Wi-Fi logging, plugged in a large USB memory stick,
and then we waited for the new router to arrive. Then I got to work. So from here,
OP kind of goes into technical IT jumbo mumbo jargon,
which I don't fully understand. So I'm guessing you're probably not going to understand it either.
But basically OP uses computer wizardry to figure out what websites this leech visits. So I did some
wizardry to figure out what their most common websites they visited were, like Reddit and YouTube. And I made it so that
whenever they went to Reddit.com or YouTube.com, they instead went to gay adult video websites.
Other websites I redirected to included one that had relationship counseling.
When you think your spouse is cheating on you, come to us!
So now, whenever the leachers would open up their favorite websites, no matter what kind
of site they asked for, they would always end up with something completely and utterly disgusting
on their screen. Then we waited. The aftermath. One day, my girlfriend got home from work and
noticed a huge moving van outside. She gave it no further mind, but when she got to her place,
she noticed that her neighbor, two doors over, was moving out.
She mentioned this with the neighbor between them, and it turns out things completely exploded
over there.
The shouting and accusations could even be heard through the walls.
Seems this happy couple got into huge arguments about their rather explicit choice of websites.
One of the couple even accused the other of hacking the internet.
So as far as we know, they broke up.
And for the record, I regret nothing.
