Our next Reddit post is from Bravo, NYC.
My wife and I have been married for about 15 years.
We have three daughters, 13, 12, and 9.
When we got married, I was 21.
I wasn't ready to have kids that young,
but my wife really wanted to have children before she turned 30.
She's six years older than me, so she would have been 27.
I agreed, and we had our first daughter when I was 23.
The same thing happened with our second and third daughters.
I wasn't really ready for either of them at that time either,
but I agreed because it was important to my wife.
Looking back, I want to be clear about something.
I love my daughters more than anything,
and I can't imagine my life without them.
I don't regret having them.
But now, we're in a completely different stage of our life.
Our kids are getting older,
and I feel like we're finally getting some independence back.
My wife recently told me she wants one more child
because she feels this is her last chance due to her age.
I told her I'm done having children.
This is the first time I firmly said no.
I feel like I've compromised on this issue before,
but I don't want to become a father again at 36.
I want to focus on raising the three kids we already have.
What really shocked me is what happened next.
She told me that if I won't agree to another child,
she'll go to a sperm bank and get pregnant anyways.
I told her that if she intentionally had another baby against my wishes,
it would fundamentally change our marriage,
and I'd likely file for divorce.
Her response was basically,
do whatever you want,
I'm having another child one way or another.
I'm honestly at a loss.
This isn't just about whether to have another baby anymore.
It feels like we're on completely different pages
about respect, major life decisions,
and what marriage means.
Am I being unreasonable for drawing a hard line here?
Is she?
Has anyone ever been through something similar?
How did it turn out?
I'd really appreciate some honest feedback from
both sides because right now I feel completely stuck. O.P., in my opinion, there are a couple of conversations
or just even sentences someone could say that is an automatic divorce territory. This is one of those
sentences. Do whatever you want. I'm going to go to a sperm bank no matter what and have another
baby against your wishes. I'd be out of the marriage. It would hurt because it sounds like you guys have a
relatively decent relationship outside of this one problem. But that's such a fundamental, like
disrespect and destruction of your boundaries that I don't see how you could possibly live alongside
that person anymore. To actually follow through with it and do it, I would never talk to her again.
So if you want hard advice, that's it. Find a divorce lawyer. Our next Reddit post is from Gucka Duck.
I'm a 32-year-old guy, and I know how this is going to sound. But I'm seeking advice because
genuinely I'm drained. My wife, who's 35, cries constantly.
It can be about small things or big things, but she cries quite a lot.
At first, I sort of dealt with it and comforted her, but there was a period of time when I was
extremely depressed. We were in a low point in our life, basically starting from scratch.
I had to work a labor-intensive job just to get us by, and she refused to work, lounged at
home, didn't even ask how I was, and when I said that I was low, she just complained about the
lack of passionate hugging.
which I had to apologize for because I was depressed and exhausted.
And I noticed that she wasn't there for me.
In fact, I noticed a pattern.
Every time I needed to lean on her or get support, it just wasn't there.
I can't discuss feelings because the moment I do, I get shut down.
Even when I ask if she has the emotional bandwidth for me to discuss.
Or she'll say things like,
We are enmeshed.
I'm not responsible for your emotions.
I need X amount of space right now.
Now I need more space or question my masculinity.
So generally, I don't share my feelings or talk about where I'm at anymore.
It's the opposite for her.
She says she feels so supported, hence why every day she'll offload and cry and I comfort her.
But I've started feeling quite resentful and just drained.
There's never a day without it.
It will range from deep crying about rehashing conversations with strangers,
It could be jealousy surrounding someone, watching a TikTok and crying if someone does something that she wants to do.
Crying about self-image to trauma.
It can be anything, really.
But I have to help her regulate quite often, nearly daily, and reassure her.
It can go as far as her asking me something about me or what I like,
and within minutes I'm comforting her and she's crying and confused as to how we got here.
It came to a point where I had to say,
please don't ask me something about myself
just as a gateway to speak about you
because it feels like my answer doesn't matter
sometimes I can't even get an answer out
because she'll start crying
it could be like do you like playing tennis
I wish I could
and I get there's times that it's overthinking
or she gets an obsessive thought she can't shake
and then that leads to crying
but there's also the element of her being quite snappy as well
saying and doing things that I would never be able to speak to her in that manner.
It can be hard when I'm going through something and I'm having to comfort someone over and over and over with no day off break.
I feel like I'm a bit bad for it starting to get to me, to be honest.
Like I know she needs a safe place.
I just feel drained and I don't know how to deal with it,
as I don't want her to feel like she has no safe space and understand some people are just criers.
So, O.P., your wife deserves a 100% safe space, but you have a 0% safe space.
Do I really need to point out to you that that's not fair?
I will say, though, her crying sounds so bad.
I don't know if this is like a personality thing, and instead maybe this is some, I don't know,
brain, hormone, biochemistry thing.
I think she needs to go see a doctor.
Crying every single day does not sound healthy.
Our next Reddit post is from Timpter.
I'm a 20-year-old guy, and I feel bad saying this, but I deeply resent my parents having so many kids.
My dad, who's 38, works, and my mom, who's 38, has never had a job and went from training to be a good wife to marrying my dad at 18.
My parents are deeply religious.
Come from religious families, and birth control, or trying to control the size of the family isn't allowed.
Even if there are medical risks, which there have been, you keep going.
That's what their church promotes. My parents and grandparents grew up going to that church.
My siblings and I, I'm the oldest, grew up there too, but I formally left the church when I turned 18.
I never really bought into their teachings, though. My dad does not make the kind of money required
to raise a family with more than 10 kids. I don't think my mom really enjoys being a mother,
so the responsibility for my siblings was pawned off on me most of the time. There were harsh,
punishments when I refused. My dad would make sure I didn't become too effeminate because of my
responsibilities to my siblings. My dad also put his foot down that I was the only boy that could be
asked to help and the five kids after me are all boys, so yeah. It was a big fight in the house
because my dad really hated me stepping in because it wasn't manly. But he also realized my mom
wasn't holding the reins tight enough. My siblings and I all developed issues from the type of
childhood we have, and to be honest, putting the responsibility on me has made me resentful of my
parents and my siblings. I don't have one single sibling I had a close relationship with,
and I moved out at 18 and refused to provide any more help, which my oldest sister won't do either.
My dad has come around now that nobody's really raising my siblings, and he calls me with my mom
to tell me to come home and help, and they tell me that I'm needed to keep the family running.
They screwed with my education by putting so much on my shoulders, and I dropped out of high school my junior year with my parents' full supports.
My grades were terrible, and I had zero hope of improving them.
My mom's pregnant again, too, and they've increased their efforts to get me back home.
Even some of the siblings have joined in, because I was the one who did stuff for them.
I do feel a little guilty for this, but I don't want to, like at all.
I don't even want a relationship with any of my family.
It doesn't bring me anything good, and it just risks me being stuck back in the cycle of helping,
which is mostly being the only parent in the house outside of discipline.
I'd like some advice because I'm not in a position for any kind of therapy right now,
and I'm not looking to go back to school right now either.
I'm close to moving to another town, but it'll still take a couple of years or more for me to be on my feet better than I am right now.
But I want to know what I should do about my family, which is why I'm looking for relationship advice.
O.P., unfortunately, the answer is to basically cut them out of your lives.
Go low contact at most.
They already destroyed your childhood.
If you come back, they'll destroy your 20s too.
And your 30s, if you'll let them.
I mean, your mom's pregnant, that's at least 18 more years of responsibilities ahead of you.
Or, alternatively, you could turn your back on them and just start living your life.
which is clearly the correct answer here.
Our next Reddit post is from Throwaway Done With This.
I'm a 26-year-old woman and my boyfriend is 30.
We've been together for almost two years.
We had the conversation about kids when we were still just dating
and both agreed that we don't want kids.
A while ago, I found out that I'm pregnant.
I will admit that I stopped taking my pill.
It was really messing me up, mentally and physically, so we talked about it.
He encouraged me to stop messing with my hormones
and that we've used condoms until I figured out,
different preventative measures. I was genuinely devastated when I found out, and I still am. I thought
we were just unlucky. He's been incredibly supportive since I found out, said it's been a blessing,
and that will be great. All positive things. I've been trying to be excited about it. A b-b-one is not
legal where we live. Yesterday, we had a horrible fight, though. Pregnancy's been miserable on me. I'm
tired and sick often, and I'm just struggling. In combination with my job, I just haven't been
worth much at home and towards him. I will admit this. He got frustrated and said he regretted
trying for a family, that I ruined it. He basically admitted that a few times when I thought we
were using protection, we weren't. He didn't give details. I know that he knows he messed up,
because he tried to act so lovingly after, apologizing for the fight and so on. I still ended up
going to a friend's place. I feel incredibly overwhelmed. He's called asking if I really want to ruin
us over this. That we'll be happy and he'll make it up to me for the rest of my life. That he wasn't
thinking and just wanted a baby with me so badly out of love. A lot of promises and apologies.
He wants to try counseling even. I'm tired and a bit of a mess. I don't want to try to get over
this, but I don't know if I'm just being too stubborn or whatever. Hey O.P. Don't base
the relationship on the fact that he was apologetic afterwards, because some guys will beat their
wives and then buy them flowers afterwards. The important part isn't the apologies and the flowers,
it's the abuse. Our next Reddit post is from Throwaway Fetit. I'm a 35-year-old woman and my husband
is 47. We've been going through a rough batch, been together almost a decade. We run a business together.
He often sends me lists or pictures of things that he finds that I messed up or forgot about,
while we're both working in different areas.
Today, he was angry at me most of the day about various things I hadn't gotten done,
and a couple of issues that I would consider misunderstandings,
who was supposed to do what task, but he considered it disrespect.
After a few hours of semi-fighting over text,
he sent me a picture of the door of our business when he stopped by to pick something up.
One of the signs was missing from it.
In the messages, he blamed me for clearly not noticing it was gone earlier.
proving his point about how he always has to be the one to notice and fix things.
It's an ongoing issue for me that I can be forgetful and oblivious to certain things.
The weather's been stormy lately, so I thought the sign must have gotten blown off.
I replied as such and said that I would check the footage from the security system to see when it went missing,
because I was certain I would have noticed it was gone when I locked up the previous night.
He told me not to waste my time digging through hours of footage.
Well, I checked anyways, and what I had,
found was him removing the sign from the door minutes before he messaged me that it had gone missing.
What? I have diagnosed ADHD. I can often be less than on top of things, but I'm trying really hard.
We've been dealing with a lot of external stressors lately. There are plenty of real-life things for him
to be frustrated about. Why make this up? And why do it in front of cameras that we both know we have?
He's a super smart guy. He knows I can and will check cameras when something's weird.
Before I checked the footage, I was feeling terrible that somehow I had been so oblivious that I didn't
notice our sign missing. Now, I feel terrible for different reasons. This person is not a
stranger to me. We built a life together, a life built on trust. I have often felt crazy over
things he's told or shown me that I remember differently, or thought that I would have or
should have taken care of. I just absorbed it as evidence of my own mental issues. Now I'm wondering if
this has happened before. People talk about gaslighting a lot nowadays, and I think a lot of people
kind of confuse it with just lying or being dishonest or being wrong, but this story is actual
gaslighting, and it shows how insidious it can be, because it slowly erodes the person's confidence
because they can't trust their own perception of reality, and they start to be. And they start to
base their understanding of reality on what the gaslighter is telling them. So it's a really just
insidious form of emotional and mental abuse. But this is like textbook definition. Our next credit
post is from Throwaway Tini Spam. My dad married my stepmom seven years ago. My dad has me, a 19 year
old guy, and my sister who's 17. My stepmom has a daughter who's 13 and a son who's 10.
I get along okay with my step siblings and things were cool until a year ago.
when my grandpa died, and in his will, it was revealed that once grandma died, me and my sister
would be left an inheritance along with our cousins on dad's side of the family. My step-siblings
were not included, and when grandma died earlier this year, that was undeniable. She named
each grandkid that she was leaving an inheritance to. My sister and I were not expecting our dad
to act like he was angry with us, when we weren't the ones who were choosing who gets an inheritance,
But he took his emotions out on us, and I moved out as a result.
And my sister spends the night at my place a lot because of it.
My stepmom was more hurt that my adopted cousins were included, so blood isn't the issue.
But her kids weren't, even though they have no other grandparents,
and she thought that my grandparents had accepted them as real grandkids too.
But they got nothing, not the money, or anything sentimental from grandma or grandpa's things.
My sister and I don't have the money yet.
There are some legal things to deal with first,
but I already know what I want to do with the money,
and it's going to be a huge help in two or three years' time.
A few weeks ago, my dad took me and my sister out for lunch,
and he told us we have to face up to reality.
He said if we want this family to work,
and if we want a relationship,
then we need to split the money four ways.
If not, then we are not the kids he raised,
and he doesn't want us to become an infection for the whole family.
He made my sister cry when he was talking like that,
and he threw our mom, who's an addict, in our faces, which really freaking hurt.
I don't know what I should do, which is why I'm asking for advice.
Right now, I just want to make sure my sister's okay
because this has all been so brutally hard for her.
Well, I'll tell you the most important thing, O.P., is to understand that
you are not responsible for your parents' hurt feelings.
They need to suck it up, sit your step siblings down, and teach them that the world doesn't give them whatever they want.
It's not the inheritance that's going to break up this family. It's your terrible dad who's going to break it up.
