At Real Canadian Superstore, when you're ready, we're ready, with a whole world and more.
From the sunny back streets of Las Vegas, a restless breeze whined, making Jet cringe.
She glanced nervously out the open doors, where body bags were laid out on the sidewalk, then up at her dad beside her.
Gain gave a subtle shrug. Across the desk, the FBI agent crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes.
Am I really supposed to believe that your twin brother invented a portal to the prehistoric past?
My brother never invented shit, unless you're counting excuses for being a total asshole.
But yeah, seems he had the scientists at his company make a sort of window to show you the past.
The quark.
It was supposed to be a window.
But it turned out to be a door."
At his side, Jet nodded.
But how exactly is that possible?
Wayne shrugged.
If you think about it, ma'am, scientists don't really know anything.
All science does is describe what happens.
It can never really understand it.
Is that right?
She cocked an eyebrow down at Jet.
You're a weird kid, grumbling.
The agent turned back to the notes she was typing on her last.
So then, an electro-emagnet pulse powered down all electronics, then a dozen of the animals jumped
out of the screen and into the audience, and everyone ran for their lives.
Not exactly. I think a lot of people just sat there, like in shock. Maybe they thought it was
still part of the presentation or something. And a few guys were so concerned that their phones
had stopped working that they hardly noticed the bloody rampage until it was too late.
To them fucks, grumbled Wayne.
May they rest in peace, added Jet.
Uh-huh.
But you two, being the cautious cowboys that you are or whatever, decided to try and wrangle the beasts, right?
Like hell we did, Wayne insisted.
The only thing I cared about was getting Jet out of there in one piece, but, well, a lot happened fast.
Yeah, it was really scary. I think I peed a little.
I definitely pissed a little myself.
Lovely.
So, if a lot happened before the chaos was finally rained in, no pun intended, what exactly did happen?
And how did you two manage to get through it with hardly a scratch?
Wayne held up his bandaged right arm, where blood had begun to seep through the gauze in the shape of a curved row of teeth.
This looked like a scratch to you?
Jet rolled her eyes.
Don't mind him. My dad's just getting cranky. The sooner I get him home to the ranch, the better.
How's about we finish our story so we can finally get out of here?
Run!
Wayne snatched Jet and pulled her to her feet, just as something large and fast, with the whipping tail and chomping jaws landed on the seats beside them.
By the only light remaining, that of the flickering primordial sunlight peeking through the quark's rectangular portal,
Wayne saw the silhouette of the great wedge-shaped reptilian head with its bony crests.
The creature reared back its head, then darted forward, clamping its mouth upon the shoulder of a young man in a gray hoodie.
The young man was wrenched out of his seat and tossed bloodily in the air.
Delete my search is!
Then the beast twisted to face Wayne and Jet, its small, amber eyes glinting.
Jet met its gaze and couldn't look away.
Come on!
Her dad yelled, tugging her beside him as he shoved his way through panicked, confused attendees,
and into the aisle. People ran and collided, crouched, and were trampled. Someone seized Wayne
by the collar. The hell is this man? Is this part of the show, or did I have too many
gummies or what? Get off! Wayne grunted, shaking the guy loose. They charged for the doors at the back
of the theater, hand in hand. Behind them, the snarls and barking yelps of the Delaphasaurus
rang out, cutting through the human screams as their claws and teeth cut through the human's flesh.
They're scared! Jet-paned.
and her dad knew which they she was referring to.
They're back hunting apex predators, he shouted back.
Let's worry about us right now.
Most of the audience remained in their seats, or else crouched on the floor,
whispering and gasping, and trying desperately to get their phones to work.
But enough had smartly run for the exits that dozens of people were pinned against the closed doors,
unable to open them as more and more bodies pressed in behind them.
Back up, morons!
Wayne screamed, but his words were unheard and unheeded.
He reached with his free hand, snatching and shoving and trying to get closer to the doors.
Jets swallowed, trying to catch her breath, and looking back over her shoulder, witnessed the full chaos of the scene.
A dozen alaphosaurus had leapt through the quark.
She could see the wiry ends of their tails wriggling above the screaming audience.
Every few seconds, one of the beasts leaped up, momentarily silhouetted against the prehistoric desert oasis on stage, and attacked, striking like the dive of a hunting falcon.
So transfixed was the girl
that she didn't register the lone Delaphasaurus
charging up the aisle and headbutting bodies to either side
until it was almost on them.
Watch out!
Jet flung her arms around her dad's side
and threw her full weight into the tackle.
Wayne stumbled to the left.
Hey, what are you?
The Delaphasaurus whisked by them,
tucking to drive its crested head against those still
crowded at the doors.
Voices gasped, bones snapped,
and the doors burst open.
As bodies tumbled into the hallway,
The dazed dinosaur let out a whine and stumbled in a circle.
Jet ducked, just as its tail whizzed by, feeling its scaly surface brushed against her hair.
She straightened up again, shaking herself.
Jeez, Louise, that critters got a lot of power behind it.
The dilaphasaurus crouched, then darted forward again, sprinting over the fallen
and through the doors, then into the sunlit hallway and out of sight,
where a fresh batch of screams rose up. Grumbling, Wayne grabbed Jett's arm, and started for the exit again.
But now most of the audience was doing the same. Hundreds jammed into the aisles, shoulder to shoulder,
stampeding over anyone unlucky enough to lose their footing. Wayne and Jet found themselves surrounded,
pressed in on all sides. Then a dark mass of claws, teeth, and tail landed right in front of them.
The creature thrashed its head left and right, jaws tearing through flesh as people screamed.
A severed hand bounced bloodily off Wayne's shoulder. Jet looked up and saw a woman with her face and chin
and bitten clean off. Her tongue, lolling in the air as her finger scraped at the gory void
on the front of her head. Then the D' Lafasaurus's tail whipped around and struck Jet in the chest,
hard. The blow flung out of the crowded aisle and into the empty seats.
Jeh!
Wayne held, ramming himself through the turmoil, not carrying who his fists or boots
slammed against as he rushed to get her. Emerging from the crowd, he squinted through
the dimness at the rows of abandoned seats and spotted one of her sneakers, sticking up
from the tattered hem of her lucky jeans.
Jeff, I'm coming, Jeff!
He jumped over a row of seats, landing a few yards from her,
and hurried forward through the cramped space.
She was moving, trying to climb upright, but there, behind her.
One of the dinosaurs had seen her, too.
It scurried awkwardly across the tops of the seats toward the girl,
its muscular legs kicking apart plastic and tearing fabric.
Wayne ran faster, his teeth clenched, his right hand squeezed into a rock-hard fist.
The beast reached Jet and snapped open its hungry jaws
for the kill.
Fuck you!
Wayne roared, punching the dinosaur in the face.
The punch knocked the creature off balance, and it staggered into the next row of seats,
but in a flash it had twisted upright, lurched, and bit down hard on Wayne's forearm.
Fiery pain shot up his arm and into his shoulder as his sleeve grew red with blood.
The dilaphasaurus whipped from side to side.
Wayne grunted, trying to copy the movement, lest the beast rip off his limb.
slamming his open left hand against the side of its head, Wayne found its beady eye with his thumb
and pressed. His thumb sank into the socket, rupturing the eyeball, and the dinosaur spasmed,
its jaws snapped open. And Wayne toppled backward into a seat, just as Jet got back on her
feet. Well, come on! she shouted, taking him by the elbow, and gently but firmly pulling him up
again. Three rows down, the injured dinosaur was up and writhing, rubbing with one short, leathery forelim
at its bleeding eye as it hissed and snarled.
I think you pissed it off.
Wayne winced, rising and following Jet toward the far aisle.
Good!
As she guided her dad, Jet looked around the auditorium again.
Some of the other De Lafasaurus were charging through the open doors and out into the hall,
while others remained by the stage, eating, or at least playing with their food.
As she watched, a man with bleeding stumps for legs tried to crawl away from his attacker,
only to be snatched back and thrashed viciously from some.
side to side before he was tossed into the air and over the stage.
To Jett's amazement, the body struck the inner edge of the corks frame and ricocheted through it,
landing among the giant ferns on the other side.
It works both ways?
Hmm, she thought to herself.
Then her attention was grabbed by a voice she recognized.
This way, sir.
Jet whipped around to see bubs, her uncle's enormous security guard,
and the only person in Randolph traverses his circle that her dad didn't despise,
hurrying up a far aisle toward a locked door in the back corner of the room with her uncle at his heels.
Jett sped up, tugging her injured dad behind her, as up ahead, Bubbs threw himself against the door,
shoulder first and popped it open. Turning, he moved aside to let his boss run through.
Hurry, Jet! Wayne grunted to his daughter.
I got to get to your uncle before the dinoes do.
Bubbs caught sight of Wayne and Jet approaching, and a nervous smile broke out of his sweaty face.
He motioned for them to hurry over.
That way I can be the one to beat his ass.
The staff at the convention center were used to handling a certain amount of excitement at these consumer electronics shows.
After all, to a specific variety of nerd, it was practically Disney World.
But the moment the quarks photonic quantum processors overloaded, causing the EMP that fried every circuit within a mile, that all changed.
In an instant, every gizmo and gadget and deep-learned, ecomorphic, hyper-seemless, synergetic, nanobionuronetic, wearable,
digital doodad in the whole damn place was reduced to a shiny paperweight. After that,
the convention became something more akin to medieval times, that is to say, the return of the
dark ages. In the glassy lobby, where the mid-morning sun continued to light the place,
true chaos didn't break out right away. The staff mumbled their apologies to complaining attendees
as they tried to reboot the computers and switch back on the lights.
Welcome to the future! Yes, yes. I know what's strange about the
this power outage. No, no, I don't know why your phone stopped working, too. If you'll just
be patient, I'm sure that... Then came the screams, echoing down the dark hallway that led to the
exhibit halls and the auditorium. Then came the squeals, savage sounds from the ancient past,
and the rapid drumming of footfalls, like the charge of some giant bird. People began to run
into the lobby, tripping over each other, shouting nonsense, about monsters. And then, of course,
the monsters came.
Look at what you've done, asshole!
Wayne shouted, shoving Randoff with his left hand as they marched into the lobby.
Hey!
Ow!
Bubbs!
Why'd you let him do that?
Come to think of it, why aren't you doing more to secure the scene?
Me?
The hell am I supposed to do about this?
Well, you're supposed to be the best.
You worked for Beaver for God's sake.
Beaver never got attacked by dinosaurs.
Wayne, clutching his bloody right forearm against his chest, grunted.
Can we get it?
out of here already. That might be hard, said Jet, pointing at the entrance where a group of young
men in fedores and anime t-shirts had just run to the doors, only to find they wouldn't budge.
Must be electronically locked, like the others. Stupid system. Her uncle Randolph puffed up his cheeks
and exhaled. Okay, well, Bubs, you run over there and do your thing. You know, knock them open.
Mumbled Bubbs, wiping sweat from his forehead as they all watched,
A dilaphasaurus charged the young men by the doors and chop off one of their fedora-wearing heads.
No thanks.
What do you mean? No thanks.
Jett stared in growing agitation as the survivors by the doors frantically backed away into a corner,
screaming for mercy as the dilaphasaurus stalked closer and closer.
We have to help these people.
She took one step forward, but her dad reached out with his left hand,
grabbed her by the collar of her overshirt, and tugged her back.
Like hell we do.
This ain't the time to be.
Be brave?
Bubbs nodded toward the corner.
Tell that's a neck beard over there.
As the Dilaphasaurus came upon them, one young man stood upright,
straightening his glasses and proudly raising his lack of a chin.
Don't worry, gents.
I've logged a thousand hours in Eldon Ring.
Cracking his pale knuckles, he marched forward.
I think I can handle one beast-type boss.
The trick is waiting for the punish window, and then...
Nope, didn't work.
That's on me.
I really should have had a weapon equipped before I tried to...
The other guys clung to each other, shaking and weeping,
while the Delophisaurus wriggled its chewing snout
deeper into the slashed open belly of their fallen comrade on the floor in front of them.
See, Jet? That's what happens when you try to be brave.
Jet?
Wayne looked down at his left hand, where Jett's plaid shirt hung limp from his fingers.
Fuck!

Jet Travers moved forward in silence, crouched low, breathing slowly.
total concentration fixed upon one goal, reaching the scaly upper back of the feasting to Lafasaurus.
Everything else, the screams, the running, the cavernous lobby, the mysterious portal back
in the auditorium, the whole world outside, they faded in her mind, blurring into obscurity
as she inched closer. She had been just six years old the first time she helped her dad
break a wild horse, and she knew even then that the term break was wrong. To do it well,
to do it right, one mustn't battle the animal.
into submission. Rather, through patient, consistent training, one strives to earn a sense of mutual
trust with their mount. Of course, that sort of thing took a long while, and right now,
Jet had only a very short while. On the floor in front of her, the Delophisaurus took a final
bite of gamer flesh and lifted its head. Jet moved a little closer, ducking as its
snaking tail wagged over her head. Reaching slowly to the badge around her own neck, she gingerly
pinched the metal clamp of the lanyard and slipped it off and held it out with one end in each hand.
Yes. No.
Jet came quietly along the dinosaur's powerful right leg, inhaled through her nostrils, held it.
The Dilaphasaurus twitched, jerking its head so that one amber eye fixed upon the girl.
But at that moment, Jett sprang.
Launching herself upward, she kicked off the dinosaur's muscular haunches and threw herself onto its back.
The creature snarled and spun.
But Jett let her body swing with the motion, using the momentum to hurl herself high onto its back,
where she landed and gripped hard with her thighs.
Her furious mount twisted its head, biting the air.
But Jette bent out of reach of the bloody teeth.
Then she flicked one end of the lanyard around the creature's neck.
Caught it and gripped both ends of the DIY reins in her right fist.
The Dilophosaurus released a long shriek of irritation and tried to buck her off,
dropping, kicking and twisting, clawing at the air and whipping its tail in a flurry of destruction.
action. Jet held on with her right hand, leaving her left arm upright and free to swing like
a counterweight as she endured the wild ride, not fighting the motions, but joining them with
her own practiced maneuvers. After several very long seconds, the Delaphasaurus huffed a breath
through its nostrils, rattled its jittery head, and began to slow its savage dance.
High on its back, Jet exhaled, and a smile broke out across her face. She looked down
at her dad, whose face had gone ashen pale.
You see that?
For a moment, Wayne stared back, unable to speak.
Then he found his voice.
I am so mad at you!
Jealous more like, she countered with a wink,
and she thought something like a twinkle came into his eyes,
though the terror on his face remained.
Two more nalophosaurus squawked nearby,
and Jett jerked around,
her prehistoric mount moving with her.
She watched as the two others stalked closer.
Their menacing snouts aimed up at her,
and she heard the people on the ground gasp
and back away, but Jet tightened her grip on the reins and kicked her heels into the dinosaur's
flank. The creature snarled, but hopped forward a step and barked a harsh note at its suspicious
companions. The two advancing dinosaurs slowed, then straightened their tails and bent their heads,
almost like a bow. I think I must be riding the alpha, she called down over her shoulder.
Still gripping the reins in one hand, she lowered the other to pat his leathery neck.
Think I'll call him Alfie. Oh, no, you don't?
her dad. You are getting off that thing this instant, or I can use Alfie to round up the others.
Jet interrupted. Then I'll get them all back under the stage. Why? The two bowing De Lafosaurus
raised their heads again, staring at Alfie. Because I can get them home. The quark works both
ways, see? In and out of the past. It does? gasped Randolph, staggering closer, though
staying safely behind Wayne. Amazing. I'm even more of a genius.
I thought. What you are is a reckless idiot, Wayne sneered back at his brother, and he jerked
as if to hit Randolph, which was enough to make the billionaire whimper and run to hide behind
bubs instead. Guess recklessness must run in the family then, said Jet, adjusting her seat on
Alfie's back and grinning. It'll be fine. Just meet me back in the auditorium. Be ready to shut off
the quark. Jet, if you think I'm just going to let you, hey-ya! She kicked her heels,
and the creature shot forward, head down, shrieking at the other two, who spun, claws gouging
the floor, then raced off after the cowgirl and her unexpected mount as they began their fateful
roundup.
A crisp Jurassic breeze fluttered the curtains beside the stage as the scent of ancient
pine and moss waffed into the auditorium, mingling with the musky odors of death.
By the stage, a dozen personal security guards stood among the carnage of their former employers,
grumbling to one another.
So like, that was weird?
Yeah, it was.
Tell me about it.
Kind of cool, though.
Hey, wait, I think there's a cryogenic thingy clause in my contract
that says I get a bonus if my guy dies
and I get his head into a freezer in under 10 minutes.
The guard leaned down to lift a barrel-chested corpse from the floor.
Hmm.
But my guy got his head eaten by the dinosaur.
You think I'll still get that bonus if I put his body in the freezer instead?
Probably not, man.
Ah, fooey, he dropped the corpse.
Besides these suddenly unemployed security guards, most everyone else in the auditorium,
who was alive and able, had already raced from the room.
So it was odd to now see three men re-enter the main doors and come running toward the stage.
The guards recognized Bubbs, of course, and his boss, the eccentric sea.
CEO who had caused all this mess.
But the third man?
His appearance caused the guards to stare in befuddlement.
Oh my God!
One of them gasped, realization crashing over him.
Guys, I think that guy next to Randolph Travers is Randolph Travers.
From the future!
He's come back in time to aid his former self and save us all.
And, eek!
Looks like the decades have been rough on him.
The future must be bleak.
I heard that, Wayne grunted, passing through their ranks.
And I'm Randolph's twin brother, you moron.
Randolph and Bubbs headed toward the stage access stairs, but Wayne ran straight and jumped onto the stage.
Sliding to a stop before the vast rectangle of the past, suspended in the corks frame,
Wayne grit his teeth.
He reached up with his uninjured left arm, pulled off his cap, and clenched it in a fist.
Randolph stumbled up beside him, squinting at his brother's hairline.
Jeez, Wayne, you know, hair restoration has come a long way.
If you want my guy's number, then,
How the hell is this machine still on?
Wayne yelled, shoving his hat back on.
When all other electronics are dead!
Oh, the quarks photonic processors were the source of the EMP,
so they weren't affected by it.
Uh-huh.
And once the creatures are back on the other side,
how do we turn the damn thing off?
Randolph pointed to the bottom right-hand corner of the frame.
Toggle switch, Wayne cocked an eyebrow.
Your time machine has a toggle switch.
What were you expecting? A big red button?
From the halls, a sound of many pounding feet and excited shrieks arose.
Oh shit! shouted a guard.
They're coming back! Hopping around the bloody remains of their employers,
the security guards hurried to the edge of the room, just as the first De Lafasaurus
appeared in the doorway, with Jet sitting on its back.
She jerked the reins, and Althe obeyed, turning into the auditorium and darting down the aisle.
An instant later, the others charged in after their pack leader, stampeding toward the stage.
That is some kid you got there, Wayne, said Bubbs, as he joined the Travers brothers on the stage.
But let's back up a tad, I think.
His advice came not a moment too soon.
For reaching the stage, Jet bent forward over Alfie's neck and kicked with her heels.
The dinosaur sprang through the air, landing on the center stage as the men there staggered backward.
Jet!
Wayne shouted, horrified that she would be carried.
threw the cork along with her ride, but Jet pulled back on the reins and Alfie jerked to a stop.
Jet straightened up, catching her breath and turned to her dad. Told you'd be fine. Twisting the
reins, she made Alfie jerk his head toward the quark. Reaching the stage, the other dinosaurs
began to jump up and, one at a time, run to the mysterious portal, crouch, and spring through.
Soon, there were only a few De Lafasaurus left on their side. Okay, Jet, now get down from there.
but the girl remained on her prehistoric mount, a worried expression on her face.
As the last of the other dilaphasaurus approached the quark and stopped,
Wayne felt his blood go cold.
As the beast turned its scaly head toward him and huffing through its nostrils,
it stared at him with one amber eye.

Oh, fuck.
He grumbled.
Oh, fuck!
Jet yelled.
What's wrong?
Wimpered Randolph.
Why won't one I hear go through like the others?
Because it hates me.
One eye turned and took a leering step toward them.
Why?
Wayne sighed.
Probably because I punched it in the face and gouged its eye out.
It pounced, but its jaws snapped in the air in front of Wayne's face as it was suddenly yanked backward.
Wayne gasped, watching his jet struggled with Alfie's reins, directing the creature,
which had one eye's tail clasped in its teeth.
One eye snarled and whirling about, head-budded Alfie.
No!
The dinosaurs clasped.
with vicious bites and slashing claws. Jet lost her balance, toppled to the stage,
and threw her hands over her head as the powerful legs of the beasts slammed down around her.
Wayne sucked in a breath. He knew what to do. Turning, he marched toward the quark.
What are you doing? Randolph hissed at him. One eye will follow me through. It's the only way.
Reaching the machine, Wayne set one foot into the frame. Then his brother's hand
snatched him by the arm and pulled him back. Not the only way! Reaching up, Randolph pulled
the old sweaty cap from Wayne's head and put it on himself.
Bubbs, get ready to flip that switch.
Wayne stared at his brother.
You?
Why, Randy?
Perhaps in a way, I sort of feel like I'm partially responsible for all this.
Uh-huh.
Besides, I've done enough for this world.
Built a business empire that helps billions of dollars go into my accounts.
But in there, in the Jurassic period, who knows what sort of empire I might build?
Wayne's brow furrowed as his brother stepped up onto the frame.
How the fuck's that supposed to work?
And hopped through.
Wayne backed away from the quark, breathing hard.
On the other side of the portal, Randolph Travers turned
and walked backward through the tall ferns,
raising a fist proudly into the air.
Do not let them call me a hero, he proclaimed.
White veneers flashing.
Instead, make sure they call me a genius and a hero.
Lowering his fist, he looked around at the ancient landscape.
Hmm, this place is actually pretty nice.
Kind of tropical.
Reminds me of Jeff's Island.
Back on the stage, Alfie crashed against one eye and sent the beast stumbling.
Then one eye looked over and noticed Randolph through the quark.
The Delophosaurus growled and prepared to charge.
Wayne couldn't wait any longer.
He ran toward Jet, who was curled up on her side.
But as one eye sprang forward, its tail whipped through the air, striking Wayne in the side.
The air was knocked from his lungs as he spun.
struck the edge of the stage and fell heavily to the floor.
Wayne groaned, his vision fading.
The last thing he heard before passing out was his brother's screams,
then the quark powered down and darkness filled the room.
The late afternoon sun made the lobby shine like gold as they finished their story.
Across the desk, the FBI agent crossed her arms.
And then what happened?
Wayne shrugged.
What do you mean? That was it.
Bubbs hit the switch.
The quark closed.
I got up and I had.
I, uh, found Jet.
He glanced down and caught his daughter's eye.
And here we are.
Jet smiled.
Yep.
So we're done, right.
Can we go?
The woman narrowed her eyes and nodded.
A minute later, they were out the front door and walking briskly through the line of ambulances
and government vehicles parked outside.
Not too fast, said Wayne, laying a hand on Jet's shoulder.
We don't want to look suspicious.
But Dad!
Don't you butt-dad me after what you pulled.
They reached the back alley that led to where they had parked,
and once in its cover broke into a jog.
It's not my fault that Bubbs got ante and hit the switch too soon.
And what else were we supposed to do afterward, hey?
The cops would have started shooting,
or later scientists would have wanted to cut him up.
Wayne grumbled in his throat.
Up ahead, the trailer attached to his truck was trembling from movement within.
You're sure nobody saw you?
Yeah, yeah.
I rode fast out of the truck.
the back end into the alleys, like I said, and any security cameras around here are dead.
They slowed as they came alongside the trailer. Wayne peered through the slats,
at the shape inside, and shook his head. Jet assured him, squinting inside the trailer,
where Amber eyes stared back at her. Alfie's a good boy, and I'll train him and feed him.
Wayne rolled his eyes and moved to the driver's side door.
This is a truly terrible idea, he muttered, as Jet climbed into the passenger seat,
But those do seem to be a Travers family specialty.
He started up the truck, then turned to Jet.
Home?
Jet suppressed a yawn and nodded.
Wayne ruffled her hair, then put the truck in gear and drove off.
