Welcome to the Scuff podcast where we talk about U.S. soccer.
Invenitos.
Our first fall mega window is almost here.
We have games in late September, early October against Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Canada.
A roster is dropping in two days, allegedly.
I'm saying this on Tuesday.
And we're here to talk about it.
This is Vince, and we have the Honorable Greg Velasquez is in the building in his war room, ready to go.
Greg, how you doing?
Doing good, Vince. How are you?
Couldn't be better. Couldn't be better.
Great to see you.
Your face.
You know, I mean,
happy to have you back, brother.
I'm glad to be here, man.
This is a fun little experiment, isn't it?
This fall window,
Pocitino has having four games to play,
and I guess we'll find out if his thoughts on friendly windows
are the same as they were last cycle,
where you just really never know what he thinks of him or how much he values him
or if he's now got one World Cup under his belt and he's like, okay, now I got this plan.
I know exactly what I'm doing.
I'm going to make the most of every window.
Well, right.
So since we're here, let's do some quick catching up, Greg.
It's been a while since the listeners of Scuff podcast.
I've heard your thoughts.
I know they're itching for him.
Let's get a few questions in there.
Well, let's start all, first of all with the man with the plan.
Maricio Pashtino brought back as,
manager.
Greg Velasquez, what says you?
Any qualms?
No, I have no qualms.
I'm all for it. Mainly because
I'm still mostly in that
boat that says, as long
as the manager isn't actively destroying
your chances, you're probably doing okay
for a national team.
And I don't think Paschino was really
out there just wrecking stuff,
making horrendous calls with setup,
with personnel.
And I find him super entertaining.
So for me, this is a guy that I
I want to be a part. Entertaining.
Like, his press conferences are fun.
Also, entertaining because is at times so difficult to parse what his objectives are for different elements of the national team coach?
From what we've become accustomed to over decades of the U.S. team and how their coaches operate.
And that's been fun, even just to kind of watch the narrative have to shift in mold and twist itself into knots because you think, oh, this is what he is now.
This is what he does.
And then he'll just do something completely different in one.
window later and it's just impossible to like really grasp the man for sure that's the whole thing
about it is like because obviously he got to the point that I think we all agree he should
have gotten to by the World Cup so I mean I mean the route was circuitous but I mean he he got there
right and so with and with the whole um cycle this time do you think he's going to be able to
unlock some extra mentality.
You know, he's very big on these, on these soft factors,
these soft skills, all these different types of things.
Maybe potentially we don't go out as meekly in the next World Cup.
Because of it, if Mauricio does stay for four years,
do you think there's any possibility in that happen?
I think it's totally possible.
I think it's a, it can be a fun job if you lean into it the way that he might.
You know, we're watching Emma do it on the women's side.
She seems to be loving it.
And, you know, she was coming from the grind of running, I mean, basically running that club, like building it from scratch at Chelsea.
And so I think there is an appeal to it.
If you kind of are over that grind, it could be a really fun, really fun career path to finish off with.
So I think it's totally possible.
I mean, it's like there's a sense where it's still a honeymoon.
You know, we lost in pretty rough fashion.
but it's not like it's not like anyone's out here demanding his head uh there it's not like he's got
everyone on his side saying we potchino is the guy out of hire but there isn't that same kind of
pressure and uh vitriol that i think you know you're going to get at the high profile clubs or if you
were gregg burholter coaching the men's right right i was about to say it helps me am irisio
postino doesn't it yeah it does and and you know whatever it i don't care what or anything about that it's
just it's fun and it's different for him, certainly on the, in the way he's covered and in the
media, or at least in our little ecosystem.
Yeah, definitely.
And having, I mean, you know, I'm a Greg Burrhalter stand, whatever, but having a coach that
it seems like a good 90%, 95% of the fan base can get behind, it's a lot more fun than
dealing with Greg Wars every single day.
I do have to say.
So, I mean, as long as Marie So I want to stay on.
we can do that. Also, moving past the manager, are there, are there any thoughts that you've been
mulling over in your head, Greg, post World Cup since we went out meekly as I, as I referenced a
little bit earlier? Is there any, is there anything stuck in there that you can't quite get out of
your head or anything you've been working around? You know, it's been a lot of like,
who's, who's going to be the guy who really makes us better? Because a lot of the, a lot of the, a lot of
discussions about what went wrong, what could have fixed it, our depth, all that stuff.
A lot of it still feels to me like kind of deck chairs where you can shift some things around
with this player pool, but there just is not, I don't think, again, super low hanging fruit.
We've got to dodge the total own goals.
I mean, we didn't technically score an own goal in the World Cup.
We got a lot in our favor of the own goals, but that Belgium loss.
sure felt like man we we we got some old goals in there uh you know the the copa exit uh in
24 but you know the big own goal with timway like we have to be able to dodge those like that
i guess is the low hegging fruit and and maybe there is an element of of mentality that can
help you do that uh but but again i don't i don't necessarily think like well potchino is definitely
the guy because he talks about all the time because he was the guy and we still had it happen
uh so it's just you just got to really light your candles and
and hope to avoid some of those.
But no, I don't know, man.
Like, it doesn't seem like we'll talk about the pool.
But for guys who maybe missed out in this last tournament,
who were really in the running,
none of them, you know, Aidan Morris was,
people wanted another backup, you know, defensive men.
It's like Aidan Morris isn't changing things.
I'm a big Tim Wea guy.
And I know he had a rough outing in his start.
And then didn't get to a chance to make any kind of
difference against Belgium, but I don't think Tim Way is necessarily going to like turn that
game on its head.
I mean, for sure.
I agreed.
Agreed like, yeah, we definitely, I don't know, I've said a lot of things post-workup at
this point, but I think one of them that I might have said is like we just got to, we got
to raise the floor, which I think is sneakily a more difficult thing to do than raising the
ceiling of a team.
Like, you know, you can raise the ceiling.
and just put a speculative 14-year-old in there.
Everybody's going to be hype.
You're like, oh, it's a ceiling razor.
It's somebody we never, you can put Diego Luna in there.
Oh, he has something different.
This is something we've never seen before.
But the actual floor of, you know, what we can expect when the U.S.
Mids national team steps on the field, can we expect a certain level of performance?
Whether it's against, I mean, Greg, you've been doing this, you know, whether it's
against El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, et cetera.
We've seen the whole gamut, and it does not matter.
who the team is.
So yeah, some floor raisers really, really would help.
But moving on to this mega window, our first mega window that we've seen that I guess will last in perpetuity.
I like it.
I'm excited for the structure of it, like the format.
I do think it's pretty cool.
Like, you know, to get the national, I mean, for us to have the national team together for a solid two weeks, two and a half weeks, I guess, I will take it each time.
So for this window specifically, as weird as it is, post World Cup and all this stuff, stuff, what do you think the objectives of the window should be?
Okay, this is going to sound ridiculous.
I think one of the objectives of the window should be to like, should be to like just entertain, like have some fun.
And you can do that with almost any combination of personnel.
But, you know, the World Cup was a lot of fun right up until it suddenly very much was not.
And I think you can, even in zero stakes competitions,
I think you can create a bit of that, that fun, that energy.
And we've got Mexico, we've got Canada,
and you've got some storylines built in there.
So there's ways that this could be a really enjoyable time.
And because of the format, I think it's huge.
It doesn't feel like not just pointless, but actively harmful to all our guys who are just starting their European seasons,
like every other fall window had been previously,
where it's like, this is so dumb, what are we doing?
The guys just got to their clubs.
A lot of them have moved, whatever they're settling in, new managers.
Our team was so young that it's always like they were all just trying to break in.
And it felt silly to play two games and then just ship them back.
So to have this bigger break feels like it's meaningful.
However Pots treats it, whoever he brings in, they'll get some good time and it won't be a total just like interruption to what they should really be focused on.
Okay, so Greg, so I'm thinking, so I guess, I'll start here.
I'm thinking about Greg Velasquez and your usual opinions on friendly matches in general versus, well, what I just heard from you there.
So I guess what is the difference between friendlies, more or less not mattering versus now this window, you should,
So I guess these things aren't mutually exclusive.
It cannot matter and you still can want to entertain.
But can you talk me through that a little bit more?
Oh, I mean, part of the entertaining for me is going to be throwing a couple of these exciting feeling razors in there.
Like, I hope we do it.
Right.
There's not like a competitive urgency in my mind whatsoever to get to get Kevin in now.
Like if he doesn't get in this window, I mean, I kind of.
of expect him to now because again, there's an excitement. It's like, why ignore it? There's no
downside when you think about, you know, opportunity costs. Whoever we leave out of a roster
in this window for a cabin Sullivan isn't an essential body. We just don't have that many
essential bodies that we can't just spare. We have so many expendable bodies still in this
pool. Respectfully. So it's like just bringing him in.
And that's already, like, it's already a fun camp.
You do that and we're having some fun here.
Fair.
Fair.
What do you think we'll see in actuality?
Do you have any sense of that?
I mean, I don't.
Just throwing shots in the dark.
Yeah, I really have no clue.
Because, again, Pachitino's first big window, you know, after sort of, after the humbling
that we had against Panama under Pachitino, we finally got like the full, full available
players in the fall after you know after a bunch of them had gold cup commitments that they
couldn't skip or just kind of chose not to then we get our full uh choices available to us
for that fall window and he still was just like don't need this guy not bringing this guy this guy
can stay at the club right right and so it's it's totally possible that we're going to see that
again now with a bunch of european players who are who are all kind of in like I don't I mean
some of them are kind of in limbo.
Who knows what Bolligan's path is at this point?
He is certainly in limbo.
It's like, do we bring him because who cares?
It's not like he's going to miss anything at Monaco,
or do we leave him because he just isn't playing any soccer?
Like, I just, I have no idea.
And I don't really think there's a right or wrong answer.
It is such a disposable window in the competitive sense.
And that's, again, why I think it's completely fine to just be like,
let's have some fun with this.
Okay, one more thing before we get off this, Greg.
Any thoughts to the fact that we need to do everything in our power to get pot one?
Oh, man.
Like, I see that and there is a real, like, ruthless logic to it.
And part of me is just like it feels like such a you got to shoot the moon kind of thing
that if you're going to commit everything to it, you could still fall short.
And that's where it's like, then you've sacrificed a lot.
And you still didn't get into that pot anyway.
But I do definitely see the math behind it where it's like nothing we do will matter as much to our likelihood of success as dodging a pot one team.
I mean, we saw how fun our group was to not have a pot one team in it with respect to ourselves.
I mean, obviously, you know, technically in this case, we would have earned that pot one.
So we would be a pot one team.
Right.
Because, I mean, I was in the, I was on the Discord
the other day.
I think Jordan put up some type of poll or something about, like,
who, how many people or something would start a World Cup game that are like non.
I don't know what the prompt was, but it was about people starting World Cup games.
And out of a certain cohort of people.
And I saw him reply to it and was like, remember, these people started a World Cup game.
And it was that, you know, the lineup from Turkey, right?
Right, like, you know, Austin trustee, et cetera, et cetera.
And I just saw that I was like, ah, that pot one life, man.
Like, you can do some freaky things, man, when you're a pot one team.
Yeah, yeah.
You can get all types of crazy.
Well, you've got to get pot one.
And then you also need the other good team in your group to totally choke it away.
Right, of course, of course.
You got to just.
You got to have, again, that's why it feels like you're really shooting the moon and putting a lot of eggs in that basket.
Well, well, also, what about this, though?
is there not a part of you that's like
it's it's
time to stop being soft on these dudes
you know what I'm saying
like so you said the point
or you said the word sacrifice
you know we sacrificed a lot
to pursue pot one
etc and I guess my question is
what exactly would we be sacrificed
yeah like how different
are we really going to treat it if we're like
no we're going to call the players to try to win this game
uh you know
again
even you could you could still rotate around the fringes because if austin trustee isn't there i'm not i'm not
saying they're going oh my god we just lost pot one neil pierre how are we're going to how are we
going to get pot one without austin trustee there and and this sounds horrific i mean this is
obviously ridiculous austin trustee is not like a bad player i'm just using him as a there's there's
20 guys we could be saying like that guy if he is the difference between pot one and not then
Again, really, it's just not a possibility.
Like, we just aren't going to do it.
That's what we're talking about.
Quite honestly, I would like to see us field mostly our strong players.
I would like to see our core players who are available,
get in here and play and look, like play slick football and look good.
And I think we would win games doing that,
and that would build us towards pot one.
It's just I also have always been
okay with the call up compromises
for long-term club health
and and sort of optimal, you know,
movement within a club.
So yeah,
that's the,
that's the,
that's the tension.
It's not necessarily like,
you can't bring in Kevin,
you can't bring in,
uh,
Mehdi,
like those guys,
they aren't ready.
Like I don't,
I don't care at all about how ready they are compared to Aiden Morris or
Burrhalter.
Understood.
Well, we're going to get into the
player pool.
Leave it there.
We're going to get into the player pool
position by position
right after this break.
We're back.
All right, Greg,
since you're here,
you know we got to start off
with the keepers, baby.
Incumbents, we're looking at
what, Matt Freeze, Matt Turner,
Chris Brady.
Feels expendable.
New blood.
Insert random MLSer, respectfully.
Also, Diego coaching.
Well, first of all, I guess I'll start here.
Do we need to make a change?
You said everybody's expendable.
I continue to just feel bad for Matt Freeze.
Yeah.
Just because that just seems like,
I feel like anybody could have made that mistake.
I don't know.
Well, this is what it is.
we were so ass in that match.
Like I've said many times before,
we still had zero shots leading up to the Matt Freeze blunder
in the second half.
Yeah.
That I just hate that he's become the go to this whole situation.
Well, I do appreciate that.
Well, he has the biggest sort of punchline moment.
Nobody at any point is unscathed.
Like you compare this to Netherlands 2022.
too. And it was really easy to just Ferreira, right? Ferreira was bad and he was bad. And so everything
was Ferreira. A lot of other guys were bad too, like real, real bad. Like, worst games of the tournament
by far. But they kind of got off easy. Burr-Alter helps too because you can just focus everything. Laser
beams on those two. He's a lightning rod. Yeah. Fries gets the big punchline moment,
but no one is escaping that game. Like, no one's getting out of their.
unscathed. Like everyone's
took a huge hit from
their status. After being
as high as they have ever been
going into that game where suddenly
all the talk about mentality had totally shifted.
And even the old school
vets who had been so hard on these guys
and their mentality and their toughness
were all now singing their praises. And then
it all just disappeared like that.
But yes,
Fries doesn't need to be there.
I understood.
Yeah, so Matt Freeze, we couldn't thank you for your service, brother.
Thank you for your service.
So I've done, well, I didn't really do anything.
I just looked at foot mob and just really quick, just looked at goals allowed versus post shot XG.
Yeah.
For the MLS keepers that we have stats on.
The only ones that truly stick out, like Freeze, not that great.
He's okay.
If I remember correctly.
Shulte, Patrick Shulte,
I think he's allowed maybe one more goal than post-shot XG scene.
And I know this is a flawed stat, everybody.
But we have two standouts.
Matt Turner, who's about seven goals under his post-shot XG-Faced,
and Nashville goalkeeper.
I think his name's Brian Schwacki.
Bring him.
Bring him.
Because, again, it basically doesn't matter.
I still think Turner should have been the guy in the World Cup.
And I think you keep leaning on him because he has consistently hit really good numbers on measurables.
He has had a long spell of being a real liability, like a general liability, not like, oh, he's just limited when the ball's at his feet.
He has gifted other teams scoring chances, the same way, you know, did in the World Cup.
So you can't really ever escape that now as a goalkeeper.
That will be tied to him for the rest of his career.
It's like, you know, that lack of confidence.
And it will affect managers trusted in starting him in tournament games.
Like one mistake and that's it.
But I think you still at this point lean on his shot stopping.
You just get comfortable with him until you just can't be anymore or get as comfortable as you can't.
And you just hope that a.
a Diego coaching or somebody else steps up and can, again,
hit that same level of competence at Turner's display.
But shot stopping wise, like, it just isn't that likely.
Like, we've been excited about other young keepers coming up,
and most of them found their way into MLS,
and none of them have been able to really hit what Turner's shot-stopping numbers
have been pretty consistently for his career.
Yeah.
Like I said, only one of the closest, Mr. Schwaqui,
that is playing for top of the table
Nashville SC
and Mr. B.J. Callahan, of course.
Yeah.
And so I've seen some calls from him.
I have not watched one bit.
I'm sorry, Keepers.
No disrespect, Greg.
But I'm just kind of out.
They're all,
they kind of seem replaceable to me,
which brings me to my question for you.
Like, what, what,
when can we see?
Like, because even with Turner,
when he was playing for me
outside of maybe the gold cup
all I'm seeing are
replacement level performances
in my eyes
what's the
what's the delta here like when can we
like I understand maybe we don't have it
in the in the pike
don't have an elite goalkeeper
in the something but
when will we know
is it just you know when you see it kind of thing
but like and and
whatever
we missing by not having a traditional league goalkeeper.
I mean, I don't know, man.
Like it's, even the numbers that we're using that we know are flawed.
Like Turner had been outstanding, you know, in that battle with Stefan last time in Burr-Alters, I go, right?
And even then, I was trying to, you know, make it clear.
You're not just going to be like, Turner has a shutout in game, Stefan, where he giving up four goals in?
Like, that's not how it happened.
over a full league season of 30 games,
like Turner might save you five or six goals over Stefan,
which is still really good.
It matters a lot in a league.
I mean, maybe more than that even for Turner versus.
Stephan, because Stefan was never that good of a shot stop.
Stefan just looked like a Hollywood goalkeeper.
So you just don't see it on a save-by-save basis,
and you'll even say, like, you get caught in that,
like, would someone else have saved this?
and you're breaking down these goals in super slow motion.
And it's like maybe.
Sometimes they would have.
And it kind of becomes the same thing as would he have,
would this striker have finished it?
Like, yeah, you would have.
But then the next weekend, that striker has a miss just as bad because everyone misses.
Strikers all miss shots.
And keepers all make outrageous saves and give up goals where a save is definitely possible.
And it's right on the line of like, you know, he got a fingertip or he was a little late or his footwork was sloppy.
So no, there isn't going to be a super clean way.
And that's why managers will, you know, lock into one.
And it will take a lot to replace them, either an amazing run of form right when you're evaluating,
which is what Matt Turner delivered in 2021 in that Gold Cup, combined with the other keeper making some high profile mistakes,
which Zach Steffen did for both Man City and a little bit for the U.S.
but that's it really takes like that much to to overtake a goalkeeper because you're right
they're mostly all just pretty close at our level in our pool fair well the the one kid we
have or at least the one that's abroad in europe with high potential i don't want to disrespect
anybody on these shores uh diego coaching has been in between the sticks for lingby
is it Lingby?
Yeah, I don't know.
That's what I'm saying.
Okay, okay.
For Lingby, all of this season over in Scandinavia,
Greg, how does he look to you?
He looks solid.
Like he's making routine saves look routine.
He's not, I mean, he's not flapping at anything.
When he gets scored on, you're like, okay, that's a goal you get scored on.
Like, there wasn't like a big mistake there, you know?
Right.
So that's, for me, it's like, that's solid enough.
And he's got a real good pedigree coming from Barcelona, like, for whatever else, I feel like that that can matter.
And I assume it does matter to Pachitino, quite honestly.
I mean, this is somebody who before he was playing first team senior soccer that was called up by Paj.
Yeah, exactly.
So we've got that, we've got that history in.
So I kind of I'm expecting to see his name on the list
Yeah
Me too me too
He just put some great tape together a couple weeks ago
Like he had one of those games
Yeah yeah
You're talking about the OB
Yeah
It was just a crazy club name
I did not know there was a soccer team that exists called OB
But it's Odin's bold club right
That's the
I got real familiar with the Danish Super League
And back in the early days
It was scoffed. Fair enough. Oh, this bowl club it is. But Diego put up a bold performance.
I really, I would like to see him in between the sticks. I mean, so far, there hasn't been much to see with his feet.
I don't think Lingby aspires a play out of the back whatsoever as far as I can tell. But, you know, I guess we can lean back on his Lamazia training and just maybe know that he has a certain amount of comfort with the
ball at his feet and you combine that with the saves that I've seen to make so far in this
in this season um yeah sign me up sign me up so he's he's got a perfect situation like this is
the perfect time to be a promising young goalkeeper for the u.s national team because uh i mean we
literally i mean we almost can't run with our you can run with freeze don't give you wrong you
can call him up and essentially give him this chance to sort of redeem himself in these months but
but you know the leash on him is non-existent if that is potches
plan. Like this, he has no, he has sort of no standing to be like, I'm the guy and that he
won't have that with the players either where it's like, oh, we, we need Matt Fries back there.
We got to have Fries. What are we doing trying out other guys? Like, that just isn't going to be
anybody's mentality. So this is the perfect time for coaching to just not screw up, not have a huge
howler and you can take this job over. That's it. Simple as that. That's been the bar for six years
now.
All right, on to the centerbacks, our incumbents.
Of course, we got Chris Richards, Mark McKenzie, Tim Rine, Austin Trustee, Miles Robinson.
As I was writing this out from the World Cup roster, I truly forgot how many centerbacks we brought to the record.
I was like, oh, man.
You know, like I wrote the first four down, and then I was going back over the list.
I'm like, oh, Miles Robinson.
But anyway.
So the age old question, we've been.
been asking for at this point four years now.
Greg, is it time for Tim Riem testimonial?
Man, it's been seven years.
He got cooked by Diego Linus in the First Nations League, I feel like.
And he was like, well, that's it.
He can't keep playing back in 2021.
But he was kind of put out to the wilderness at that point.
Yeah, yeah.
I don't think you have to retire him.
I hope he isn't an every match starter.
But for me, there's plenty of spots again to have the 45-year-old player coach.
Like, that's totally fine to have on the roster.
These rosters are 26 players.
Like, you don't use anyone.
Like, we just saw we've got five guys and would rather not play four of them at all.
So we're not itching to get all these guys on the field.
But, I mean, if Pottcher thinks Ream adds value,
in the locker room.
I'm all for it.
I hope he is not a 90-minute a game player for four games in September and October.
Yeah.
That's what it comes down to.
Agreed.
One start.
I hope Tim Rine gets one start.
Testimonial, man.
I just feel like, because, I mean, do you want to talk about somebody else who maybe comes out of that Belgium game with more egg on face than others, especially, like, publicly.
and as far as optics
optics wise
you know
getting dunked on
by just a
very regular striker
it was not Lukaku
you give him a pat on the back
like you know if it's prime
Lukaku Tim Reed
you're like ah
we'll get him next time bro
yeah I mean that was the Matt Beasler
in 2014 in 2014
yeah
CDK
I can't I can't take that in the same way
but it is what it is
Once again, centerback is just, I mean, looking at these names on the screen, it's tough.
So which might make it easier for New Blood, we got Neil Pierre and a little sneaky Justin Chee, too.
Justin Che has come back from the wilderness, Greg.
Playing centerback from New York Red Bulls, or four New York Red Bulls.
I watched, they played L-AFC in the midweek, and I think they were behind or something.
and basically Red Bull were just going like kind of all out and attack
and which left them accountable to the L-AFC counterattack
with Denny Bawanga,
son, etc.
Just running at the Red Bull backline consistently.
And Justin Chey held up quite,
quite well, quite well.
Like, you know, I'm seeing,
we've talked a lot about Neil Pierre on the show.
But at this point, once again,
looking at these names,
I'm looking at.
I would say in this window, we need to go ahead and blood in a Justin Chey and a Niel Pierre for sure.
Yeah.
And again, I think it's totally fine to just throw some stuff at the wall here.
I don't particularly know that I feel like these guys are beyond the deck chairs.
For sure.
But these deck chairs that we're talking about, when you get to a Tim Ream, a Mark McKenzie,
Miles Robinson
You know what?
I might even throw a little bit of respect
on Austin Trustee.
I'm going to keep him out of this.
Just slightly.
Because for these deck chairs,
man, we're talking about
the floppy plastic ones.
You know what I'm saying?
That's been through a lot.
You know, kept them out.
All different types of weather,
et cetera.
The plastic is wearing out.
Like, it's like,
these things are on that last.
Like, you would be reticent,
like especially a man like me of my size.
I would be reticent to sit on these chairs.
That's not.
thing you got to do when you're a big dude you got to you got to really survey the chair is this a
crumpling chair you're just he's just some you're some crumpling chairs out here man so i it's like
yes but if you take the crumpling chair route and swap it out for the exact 20 dollar
replacement that's still an improvement that's what we're hoping and that's the thing here is
these guys might not even be at that level like these guys might not ever be marked
McKenzie, which is discouraging to think about.
Almost cry it.
But that's, you know, respectfully.
Like, Matt Miosga was a deck chair.
And he came in and he's a, you know, are any of them, you know, prime MLS Matt Miosga level?
Like, that's sort of like the, what you got to get to.
He just got let go by his club in the middle of a season.
So, so we need them to get to that.
We need them to get and surpass that.
level and we're just again we're kind of pre you can pre select them for the national team
hoping that they are there one day I don't know that any of them are there yet but I also think
again I also think it's fine to run them out for some minutes in these friendlies and I still think
we can get pot one yeah yeah so that's the thing I don't think we're sacrificing too much as far
as pot one pursuance to throw in a maybe I'd be probably a little bit more comfortable with Justin
Justin Chey right now just because he can handle the ball
a little bit better than Neil Pierre currently.
But Neil Pierre,
as a, I've said it multiple times,
but as a business handler,
he has the upside,
he has a higher upside than by on this list,
I would say.
Chris Richards,
still,
well, let me ask you this, Greg.
Are there any more steps for Chris to take?
Or do you think he's probably about fully baked?
I think he can,
I think he can season a little bit.
I think business handling is something you improve on as you get older.
So I do think he'll handle things a little cleaner with more authority.
Because I think that's still kind of a weakness for him, to be honest.
Certainly at the international game where we really need him to be that guy specifically.
He did it in the Gold Cup for six games.
But again, that level of competition is some of the easiest business you can handle.
Yeah.
For sure.
All right, well, that's the centerbacks.
Bring them all.
On to the fullbacks.
Incumbents.
Of course, we got Alex Freeman, Joe Scali, Jedi Robinson, and Max, A million Arfston.
Alex Freeman, I think has one start so far this year for Villarreal.
Still sitting behind Marino there and right out.
side of, well, I didn't want to say
Villary All again, but I was going to say
right outside of Valencia.
Joe Scali was,
they tried to put him out to wilderness.
Glabok did.
But look who's back in the starting lineup.
You could never get rid of Joe Scali.
Right back in the starting lineup,
Joe is doing the same simple Joe things.
Jedi, back in the Fulham lineup,
playing every week to
mix results.
Maximilian Arston looks to be mostly a bit player for Middlesboro as it stands right now
and really as a winger.
Not, I have not seen him play fullback.
He might have, but I've only seen him play on the wing for Middlesbrough so far this season.
Basically, I think we just, I think we just roll with our two guys until the wills fall off,
but.
Yeah, I think so too.
And I still think that if you're going to go beyond those two,
would be moving desk back or moving Timway on,
because I just think they're better soccer players than are for Scali.
Scali's amazing, isn't he?
Like, you literally can look up floor in the dictionary,
and it'll just say, like, Joe Scali, like, this is just where he lives.
Yeah, where we're, this is the first that I'm aware of the Bundes,
you know, the Bundesliga, we're going to talk about one here soon in this episode,
but they always have the midfield jobbers, right?
You know, Leonard, Leonard Maloney, you know, James Sands when he was in the Bundesliga.
Guys are just run around, kick people.
Patermore has got it.
Our American guy playing for Patermore.
That's exactly who we're about to talk about here soon.
But Joe Scali is the fullback version of that.
You know, just a solid Bundesliga jobber physically fit, can do the job, gets up and down responsible.
responsibility is probably the core
tenet of being a bundlesly good jobber.
But yeah, it just is what it is.
And you know, it's okay.
But it's not going to entertain.
It's not going to entertain us in this window.
That's why I want Waya or surge to like get some minutes back there for it
if we need to rotate.
Because those guys will at least get the crowd going.
Right.
And Alex Freeman.
I guess Arf would try to do that from the last side.
Yeah.
But Alex Freeman, I'm always entertained watching him like kind of
kind of get and give the ball,
just the different things that he can do
on the ball.
While not
he's not immune
from a mistake, obviously.
There's just so much
there's just so much more comfort on the ball
and ability to do things with the ball
than, I mean, if you,
then a Joe Scala. You know, it's like 5x.
Alex Freeman, man, if we hadn't already
coined little brother in such a derisive way for certain players in the pool.
I feel like Freeman would be, we could call him the little brother, but in that incredibly
affectionate way, like he was the baby of the World Cup roster, but it was like, everyone loved
that he was out there.
And it was just like everyone kind of embraced him, took him under their way.
And like, you can see them directing him around on the field.
Like, they're helping him learn because they know he's got something.
Right, right.
He's that little brother that's like, oh man, we're so glad we got.
you know like this guy coming in this is awesome once he
once he gets his feet under him he's going to be cooking and I feel like that's
what you see the dynamic with the with the team with him yeah I was thinking about
because that's exactly what I was thinking about like my little brother
like when I would bring him around like my sporting teams or whatever
like growing up and like everybody kind of knew whether it's basketball
football whatever I was like man
red he's like everyone every at that point once people realize you got it
Like, everybody wants to take you under the wing.
You know, everybody wants to teach you a little something.
You know, looked out for you in a different way.
But, yeah, that's definitely Alex.
So, new blood, fullback position.
Hey, we got a throwback.
He got a throwback, Greg.
Brian Reynolds, he's starting to get some minutes at Stad Renan.
Renée Renaud.
He played 22 over the weekend to close out a 1-0 win versus Marseille.
And he actually looked all right.
he looked all right.
I got some clips in the clip notes.
Anybody wants to check it out.
You know, one thing that kind of struck me is that, you know, you can tell that he's
been a professional soccer player playing a lot of minutes for a while now.
Because, like, I mean, there wasn't a ton of business for him to handle, but he handled
anything that came to him.
And then also, you just see him out there as a person who's come to a new team.
and who has been tasked with, you know, come in and lock this thing down, make sure Marseilles
doesn't score so we can get out here with a win.
And he's directing traffic on the back line.
Like, he's pointing out runners, like who's tracking who, when, where.
And that was, it was good to see.
It was good to see.
Like, he's, our boy has turned into a man now.
Hopefully he can get some more minutes for, for Ren.
But he's currently playing behind former Chicago Fire.
player of premise law
Brankowski.
Awesome name.
That's who plays
right back and he's been
starting every game so far and has
seemingly started the season well.
So we'll see
when and if Brian is able to crack
that starting lineup and really get some minutes
because so far right now it's the 22
against Marseille and I think he got four
against PSG. Yeah,
against PSG.
Other
other blood,
Chris Lund.
He's in the championship.
Caleb Wiley also in the championship.
George Bello in the Champions League.
Yes, sir.
George Campbell.
I put a question mark here.
He could also be in the centerback bucket
also in the championship for West Brom
and Frankie Westfield.
Philadelphia Union fullback.
Anybody stick out to you, Greg.
No, and I think that's the whole thing.
Like, we don't have, we don't have a phenom in waiting here in this group for this window,
is that we don't have somebody who's going to, like, get you super excited.
The sickos would, I would, I'm sure love to see the Chris Lund smile.
Like, you can find a reason to be happy for any of them if they get called up.
But there's nothing about any of them that you're going to be like, this guy could be the answer for us.
Like, even to the point where it's like, I just stick.
Joe Scali back there.
I think we don't have to have Chris Lund at left back because we can just stick Scali there.
So there's that little sort of excitement over any of them.
Again, from a competitive standpoint, from a narrative standpoint, they would all be wonderful.
George Bello getting back into the mix.
We'd be pretty sick.
Yeah, so I guess this is the mark that we're going to make with all these position groups.
Any of these new blood players getting stuck into the line?
lineup would be a loss in our in our pursuit of pot one understood understood so so centerbacks
we can sub anybody out put somebody in not losing not losing that much uh fullbacks we will be losing
something mostly because of the floor um set by set by joe scally as like that you know you can't
get in the club unless you unless you're joe scow yeah and you can't be more fun than sir gino
desks like no one's going to be more entertaining than what we got for the desk no one's going to be
reliable and responsible.
Right, the built-in backups that we have as well, understood.
On to the midfield.
Midfield's where it gets a little, I mean,
we got some people having some stopping starts to this season.
Weston McKinney has not started whatsoever yet to play this season.
I'm willing to say that he will not be here.
He will not be on this roster that comes out in two days.
Yeah, does anything like what he's been for these callups,
yeah, there's no way Weston McKinney's coming.
Uvei did say that they expect him to play in the midweek
in the Europa League.
Yeah, he should be available to play the Europa League fixture this week.
So that's cool.
Malik Tillman, as we mentioned yesterday on the Monday Review,
got a lucky assist but has not played well.
He has gotten minutes, but has not really played well so far for Levikusen.
We still expect him to be there.
Or at least I do.
Tyler Adams, after starting the first few games on the bench,
I started the last two Premier League games for Bournemouth,
who has yet to get a win so far this season.
Sebastian Burrhalter doing fine in the championship.
Christiane Rodon.
Greg, it has to be time to salute his serve.
It has to.
I mean, I'd say no, and only because, again,
his age isn't a factor for him.
if anything, it could be, it could help to have him in the role that he plays for us,
which is show up to training and treat every training like it, like it is the World Cup final
and hope that that is contagious.
So in that sense, Raldon's a job until someone else comes in and does that would probably
still exist.
I don't know if Potsch will, I mean, that was a job for Burrhalter too.
And Burrhalter said, hey, thanks, that was great this cycle.
We've got it from here.
and then our mentality took a huge dip, Vince.
It didn't actually recover until World Dawn came in
because he played against Leon on TV and Pach brought him in
and then our mentality came back and it also coincided with the Florida Valley.
You might have cracked the cold, Greg.
Because think about it, that was the South Korea-Japan window
when Christian came back and he got that start against Japan.
Japan kind of kicked the whole thing off.
we started,
we started seeing
some intelligent design,
you know,
from Potch,
from then on.
You know what?
Greg, you might really be on to something.
Well, I mean,
Potch said it.
Potch said,
you know,
we're missing something in camp.
And Christian Roddon provides that.
So,
so for his age,
whether he's,
you know,
past it,
whatever he had at his prime,
whether he's still in that or not,
it probably doesn't matter
for what his role would be
in these windows.
It would be to show up,
help the atmosphere,
help the environment,
and you can keep doing that forever.
Fair enough.
You know what?
I've been convinced.
Christian Rodon, come right down.
Next, Mr. Giovanni Raina.
That started three consecutive games.
The effectiveness has been less than desired.
Less than desire for me.
But he started three consecutive games, Greg.
I know.
It's fun because we can take any victory with Gio Raina.
We do.
We do take any victory.
And him playing three consecutive games starting,
which means, you know, he's going to play 60 minutes or so.
Huge win in my mind.
Because we essentially just, at least here at scuffed HQ,
we basically just take for granted that for the national team,
he'll give us something.
and probably something that only four or five other guys are going to give us in any
they won't give us the same thing as geo but they might give us some attack that that at least
approximates it so so for geo to be playing at all and healthy answers a question for us that
is sort of always on the table and so that means i sure expect to see him in this camp
Yep, he's going to be there
I have another category
These people aren't incumbents
They were not on the World Cup roster
But they're also not new blood
And also their club situation is kind of weird right now
They're in the wilderness
Johnny and Tanner Testament
We can move on new blood
We got
What are you bringing?
Are you bringing either? I'm bringing Johnny
I'm bringing Johnny in
I'm bringing Tencent Testament every camp
Okay.
Available, brother.
But I'll take a Johnny, too.
And so we got new blood.
Eunice Musa.
Unis Musa at this point,
feels like new blood, feels like a new signing, et cetera.
Audrey Mehdi, as we talked about earlier,
and this is a special one, Greg.
This is, as far as I know,
this is the first alum of the high school champions.
League.
Everyone shout out Jim Hart, a friend of the podcast, been on the podcast multiple times.
The first alum of the high school champions league to play in a European top five league,
Mr. Santiago Castaneda from Tampa Bay.
That's awesome.
It is pretty cool and a pretty underreported fact, as far as I know.
John Luca Bousio, who isn't quite new, famously started the first two games under
Maricio Paschino, and Nico Securis.
Is there any, I guess this is our best position group, but is there any, any shiny deck chairs in here?
Wicker, wicker furniture.
I mean, I still have Musa.
I still have Eunice Musa.
I'm so excited about the fact that he's playing.
I'm trying to even temper my optimism here because early season, early in the year, you get weird starting players.
You get players who play a big role as other guys are, you know,
coming back from whether it's World Cup offseason stuff, whatever.
Teams are incomplete for a while.
So I'm like, I don't want to get my hopes up that Eunice is like this manager's guy,
but he's still the guy for now, and it's been a while.
And he's doing good.
So I'm hopeful.
But then I also have no idea if that matters to Pachino,
because I don't know if Eunice Musa was a soccer decision to be left out or not.
His soccer didn't demand a spot in a World Cup roster at all.
But certain players are good enough, Giorina, that they're going to get in regardless
because the national team needs that player.
And I thought Eunice Musa should have been one of those guys, even though he's not amazing.
He can be very steady, and I thought he would help our team.
But now he's playing soccer.
And the question is, does Paschitino just have a, basically have a personal issue with him?
Yeah, yeah, I guess we'll be able to tell after this camp because, I mean, at this point, it's a no-brainer for me playing and playing very well.
Eunice Musa is, let's get him back.
And once again, just one of the crazy facts of the Marisa Pachino tenure so far,
Eunice Moussa, zero minutes in the midfield for Maricio Pachino in his tenure.
You know, we talked about the route it took to get us to what we did in the world,
Cup.
We didn't look at, in my opinion, one of our best midfielers in the midfield.
But anyway, we'll move on.
Just to be clear, Mr. Castaneda, Santiago, Cassiata, does play for Pataborn in the
Bundesliga was key for them in their promotion bid to get up to the Bundesliga last season.
And there's Vita Bundesliga.
And now
And now he's in the big show
And he is starting every week for Paderborn
I cannot lie
I have not watched him play
But all descriptions for me
It's just typical Bundesliga jobber
Who's a dude from a
Was it Dusseldorf?
Oh man
Geez
I'm blanking but I love that guy
The guy who kept yo-yoing with him
He had a Latin
He has a Latin kind of name too, if I remember.
Morales, right?
Marales, right? Afraido?
Morales.
Yeah.
Alfredo?
I think so.
Yeah.
It's a long lineage.
It's a long lineage at this point of guys that's like, oh, he's playing in a Bundesliga.
Then you come in and it's like, oh, yeah.
You're just there to kind of run around and lift some weights and look good coming off the bus kind of thing.
But look, I'm going to check in on them soon.
I have not yet.
I can't lie.
But I'm going to check in and see if there's something there.
We could always use a little bit of steel sometimes.
You know what?
I guess I left out Aidan Morrison here.
Like you said, Greg, Ata Morris, not moving the needle for you.
But Greg, let me tell you something.
Adjee Mehmeti, who came out in the midweek in that game that I referenced early when I was watching Justin Che.
He came out in the 33rd minute with what seemed to be an end.
injury and he started this weekend.
So it wasn't that much, that much of an injury.
Bring him down. Bring him down.
Because I'm telling you what, this, Adjimametti, that's a floor raiser for me.
That's a floor raiser.
His ability and build up, his ability.
He's a sixth, Greg, who is, he's a buildup general.
And then also, he's shown a lot in the final third as well.
Like, he has some, he has some ingenuity, some creativity in the,
final third when he does find
itself there and has shown
his self to be more than capable
playing as a single pivot under Michael
Bradley of facilitating
you know in ambitious
expansive possession
based team so
Audrey get him in there
so he's again one of those call-ups that adds to the fun
you call him up because he does things
that we don't have players in our pool that
do those things
we don't know that he'll be able to do him at that level
And I think part of, you know, spending time with the national team is knowing that getting excited about these players doesn't mean you're saying he's got it. He's the guy. It's saying he might be. And if he is, it's going to be awesome. And why not have him in?
That's right. That's right. And Greg, you know, I don't have that many. I was going to make a joke about this being, this is an MLS 4.0, Greg. You know, if they're performing an MLS now, then then.
They got it, damn it.
You know.
All right.
So that's the midfield.
Well, what, so what will we do?
Right?
No Wes McKinney.
Malik and Tyler are going to be there.
Again, unless Pachitino is literally just like, no, we punt this window for the World Cup guys.
And they just don't need to be here.
They got the time off.
I don't see why he would do that.
Then, yeah, Malik and Tyler are going to be there.
I got to assume
Sebastian or Roldon would be there
I got to assume Raina's going to be there
and so then
I mean I don't know he's got spots to play with
so if he's
if everything is good and forgiven
with Eunice Musa then he's got to be there too
and then you still can bring in
a testament in a Mehdi
I feel like or a Johnny in a
him a medic
yeah
yeah I mean as much as I'm a troubadour
I am totally fine
leaving Tanner
Leon for
Adjima Medi.
Adjima Medi has jumped to the top of my
priority list for this window
along with a couple of the kids.
But so
and I
would say we could put
Eunice for sure.
I mean we know this.
We can put Eunice in and we will still be
on our path to pursuing pot one.
And I'm willing to bet
we could put Audrey in as well.
That's where you're at?
I love it.
I think so.
I would like to see him against Mexico or Canada.
If he accepts a call-up, you know,
we got some dual-night panic with us in Albania.
On to the attackers.
Incumbents.
We got Flo Baligan,
Timothy Wea, Alejandro Zendahas,
Rico Pepe,
Ozzie Wright,
who is hurt,
Brendan Aronson and Christian Pulisicicic.
Christian Play 45.
against Lacio look good.
Everything should be fine there.
But I guess it still is kind of a question
whether or not we bring him or not.
Yeah, whether he needs that,
whether that's what's best for his ramp up
to full speed and full availability.
I'm kind of skeptical.
Again, I feel like Pachitino has been the coach
who's aired on the side of leave injured guys B.
So I feel like Pulsick is,
I don't know,
I'm not getting my hopes up that I'll be there.
And if Pulsick's not there and Bolligan's not there, our attack is going to need some new fog.
So that's when we just put in the ceiling raisers, the theoretical ceiling raisers.
You know, Jack McGlynn, can you curl one in from 30, you know, etc.
New blood, of course, the superstar in the making, they want to crowd them too early.
once again get the ire of the barbecue king uh cabin sullivan um Greg
Greg what have you seen for Kevin uh I've seen I mean I've watched this highlight reel and
I'm really glad that he's got a highlight reel like it's it's a really good it's a really
good thing when every time you go out there you're you're putting up a highlight reel like it's
not like we were like oh but remember this goal he scored in the in the U-20s or like having to
dial back to you know a month ago and just replay that one over and
over again.
We've done that so long
for so many people.
It was like,
you know,
when Tim Wayo was struggling
for time at Leo,
I'm like,
remember Nigeria,
though.
Nigeria in the Hube 20 world.
Like,
Gavin's doing it against grownups
and he just,
he will do it again
the next time you play.
So,
uh,
that's really good.
Um,
it is still a small sample size,
but he's a baby and
to be doing what he's doing as a baby,
uh,
with that sample size.
is still what you call up for a window like this.
I don't think there's any way around it.
I think you definitely call him off.
Yeah, and I was, after I released clip notes last night,
I went back and watched it.
As I usually do, I just go through and watch it once
to see how my music is mixed.
And just to watch the highlights and stuff.
And I thought about writing this all the way out,
but, listener, if you go through and watch these clip notes
from this past week, this man, Kavan,
It's like he brings the something different.
You know, when we all going through this Diego Luna psychosis,
not we all, when y'all were going through that Diego Luna psychosis,
you know, the things that I kind of push back on always about, you know,
he brings a different flavor, he's a streetballer,
and all these different types of things.
When you actually looked at him on the field,
it kind of looked like a regular, just kind of attacking soccer player trying to,
Kevin is on a different level.
Like in this game that he just played against San Diego FC,
he,
okay, we got the goal.
He scored a goal off a Croy's back heel, right, in the box.
He also took a snapshot with the outside of his boot on his left foot
from the right side of the box,
just because he felt like it from kind of the top of the box,
the corner, just because he felt like it.
He also from the right side served across,
and with the outs he's on the left side left wing started across him with the outside of his left
boot to try to fade it enough to where he could get to an attacker that's kind of has more depth
from the goal like further away from the goal than him he he kind of he did like a little rainbow
on the sideline to get by somebody on on the touchline he it's like the amount of flicks and tricks
and stuff that he is trying to do on a daily bit.
Like there was a, he got a short hop pass from somebody kind of in the midfield.
And he just takes it and takes his input and catches it right off the short hop
and dinks it over a defender to Frankie Westfield who's on the touchline.
It's like, he is having a damn good time.
Every time he's stepping on the soccer pitch.
And it's just like, I was watching that.
Obviously I put it together, but rewatching it again.
And it's just like, man, this dude is much.
watch TV. It's not just because he is good and effective. He is having as much fun on a soccer
pitch right now as like anybody, anybody in the world that you could just turn on and see.
Like, you know, this is, you could cut it up. You would think it's Ronald Dino.
Like, of course he doesn't have like the Macy runs, you know, the crazy close control
and stuff. But you see the stuff he's doing, man. It is.
I'm in awe.
And Ronaldino, you know, jumps in as a baby and he's doing it for Barcelona.
Right.
And Gavin's doing it from Philly.
But, you know, when you're talking about having this much fun, the guy we left off of our incumbent list because he doesn't fit in any position anymore is Sergino desks.
And what is he?
He's just fun.
He's just a fun player.
And that's what I think of is like when you have somebody trying all that stuff, if he's on the field with like a Sergenio desk.
for friendly windows.
Like, for my money, like, that's what, that's what I'm after.
I want that in a friendly.
I want it to look like, you know,
even when we were kind of ineffectively trying to clown people against Australia
in the World Cup, like, that was, that was fun.
That's entertaining.
It might not be, we might not be carving them up over and over and getting to the goal,
but you can just tell there's something about the way that the guys are playing in that sense.
And I think that's, I think that's where Gavin was going to add,
not just like kind of be like, oh, he could fit in here.
he could add and actually help create that that environment where guys are starting to do that stuff.
Yeah, and it's like, yeah.
I mean, when you put them on the theoretical fun side,
which is anywhere the Sergenio does operates, basically, we've seen it exist.
With and without Tim Wea, West McKinney, et cetera.
Anywhere Sergenio is, that's a fun side.
Like, it's because the dudes on Philly,
don't necessarily
they're not marching to the same beat
of the drum that Kevin is.
Like, they're good soccer players.
Like, they're able to get on the end
of whatever Kevin's trying to do
and they're able to, you know,
play the little one-toos and facilitate with them.
But it's not, like, to the level that it's going to be
when it's Kevin and Sergenio Deaths just absolutely,
because then it will be clowning.
Like, it doesn't matter who it's against
at this point, I think he's going to be able to pull out
because first of all, he's just willing to try it.
He's just willing to try any and everything.
And yeah, the more I see it, the more
I spend time watching them play,
and the more you spend time watching the other soccer,
it's like there's not a lot of dudes doing this stuff.
So, Kevin, let's see him immediately
because we're going to have some stuff.
You talk about growing the game.
Kevin Sullivan.
All right.
Let's move on.
Cole Campbell, doing his thing at Elversburg,
Zabria Gozo,
Crystal Palace, obviously. Julian Hall, New York Red Bulls,
Justin Ellis of Orlando City,
Peyton Miller of the New England Revolution,
and Jack McGlynn, Stoke City.
Anybody else side of the other than Kevin, Greg?
So any of them would be okay,
especially, you know, if we, if we're lightball,
if we're not bringing pool is sick.
McKenny's been more of an attacker for the U.S.,
so if he's not there,
we've got starting spots that we could fill
with some of the players who we already know about.
And then the minutes after those guys
could be taken by any of these guys.
You know, like, you're just,
you're battling allies and dejas,
who's also been hurt. I doubt he'd make it either.
Brenda, I mean, he hasn't been in the wilderness.
He's playing.
a little. He's got like 200 minutes in the league for leads. I don't think he's, I think he has
taken one shot and I think he's created one shot for a teammate. Yeah. So his, his attacking hasn't
been like spectacular and it's not ever been like his outside of, sort of outside the peak
Brando Systems. I'm basically saying Bruno's a system guy. It's basically what I'm going to say.
He backs up a lot of numbers as a system guy and he's a decent fit for that system. But he's even getting
forced out of his own system.
So I think there's minutes.
I think there's minutes you can give to some of these kids.
But again, no urgency.
And other than Cabin, none of them are like,
oh, this guy's going to blow everything away.
So it goes on there.
So out of this list,
people that are above the pot one line, essentially,
people that I think we can throw in
and we are not sacrificing anything.
Cabin, for sure.
Cole Campbell, I got time.
The speed, right?
You just wanted to run?
The speed and there's a little bit more than the speed, man.
He has some, he got some stuff to him.
He roasted up in McConnell this weekend on the touchline,
and it wasn't speed related necessarily.
It wasn't pure straight line speed.
He got the ball on the wing.
and, you know, it was close control.
It was his ability to start and stop that got him.
I mean, he absolutely dusted Dale up in McConnell to the point to where
when Cole got to the spot in the box where he took the curling attempt,
like, he did not have a play on the ball.
He was beat that bad.
You know, he could not make a sliding challenge to try and deflect the shot or anything.
Like Cole Campbell had a clear shot on goal because he roasted him to that point.
So that impresses
Like you combine that with the pure raw speed
Yeah
Which he showed that
I don't know if he caught his disallow goal Greg
He missed him
He had a disallow goal this weekend against Bayern Munich
Where he just
I mean he turned on the burners
And once again it was up from Kano
And just
He probably started about three yards behind him
And he just had a straight line run
To collect the ball and shoot
It was disgusting
Like there was only ever going to be one runner in that race.
Well, and that's why that speed alone, not alone, but like you said, the fact that he's good and has that speed makes him a really safe call up in my mind, like because it is sort of that floor.
It's kind of like what I thought of Jedi back in 2018, 19.
Like he gives you this, you know this will be a problem that teams will have to deal with, even if it's not super, super clean once he's got the ball.
Like this is, this is an issue.
and you have to sort of be above the
Cade Cowell threshold of like
how dangerous you are with it
but
but like if you've got
if you've got if you're above you know
certain level
and you bring that level of threat
you're a safe call for some friendly windows
you're not you're not hurting the pot one
pot one business it's like
it's like Alyssa Thompson when she was 17
right exactly
exactly
and I'm going to throw
you know
know what, I'm, I'm, I'm a fan of Justin Ellis, fan of Julian
Hall, Gozo, I'm still, I still need to figure out some more about Xavier Gozo, but,
but if he's on, let's say he's on the roster and it's, it's one-one against, against Peru,
and we're in the 70th minute.
Throw him on.
If you saw Gozo going up to the line or you saw Brendan Aronson.
are you like are you like hey what are you doing throwing goes out there we're not going to get pot one
you got come on potch like get brendo get brendo up and moving so we can get our way our goal
stop kidding around we need our goal fair and MTV's so mad right now it's a it's a there is a lower
threshold here so yeah we we do got some spots and some minutes to play with for sure um
I still got time for Tim Way on the right, of course.
Absolutely.
Other than that, yeah.
Yeah, you know what?
You put it like that, Greg.
Any of these dudes will be fine.
Any of these dudes will be fine.
Even McGlynn has that, like, again,
just has a totally different thing that he brings.
Where for a friendly win, I'm like, all right, this will be something.
And we've seen it.
I mean, against a team.
that we will have to pass to get pot one.
I don't know if we'll have to pass them,
but a team we will be competing with for pot one.
Turkey.
Turkey, you know, he did this thing.
Got a curler?
And that's the thing.
You know, you talk about sealing.
It's like, yeah, Jack McGlynn can do that.
A curler, you know.
You can always get that off to say nothing of the floor of performances
that you'll get from week to week.
But anyway, that's the attackers.
We have covered all the position groups.
roster comes out Thursday
and I guess we'll see
Greg any final words
I can't wait like it's been a
it's been a long time it feels like the World Cup
ended a long time ago
the women haven't been playing either
like we need we need a roster
yeah let's reset the discourse
let's get it up and going
the games are great too but the roster
release is the real
right
yes and especially as so many youngsters
have started to stamp their ground, truly in MLS.
And they truly, a lot of them look truly viable as potential difference makers on this team.
So from Vince, that's Greg.
We'll see you.
