This is a podcast from Rover.
Please welcome to the Edge Nights for the first time in two years.
Bruce.
Welcome, guys.
There we go.
So excited.
You're back.
You're a new single out.
It's called Like a Woman.
This one's pretty different.
If you've seen the music video for it, it's like part of this trilogy, right?
Space Island.
Where did this concept come from?
I think it started off as like a sonic theme.
Yeah.
We just randomly were making one of the songs on the album,
if you fall in love, we put slide guitars and lasers all through it.
So it just, we're like, man, this sounds like an island and space.
Then we're like, Space Island.
Hang on, Space Island.
It started gathering all these other meanings for the album and stuff, so.
Yeah.
And the music videos are especially cool.
Like, where did you guys shoot those?
You're out in a desert somewhere.
Yeah, the first one was all around the South Island.
Oh, it's in New Zealand.
Yeah, the first one.
The first chapter is in the South Island.
The second chapter is like...
In cartoon world.
In cartoon world.
And then the third chapter is shot over in the States in Death Valley, Nevada, which is one of the hottest places on her.
I can tell you're first hand.
Yeah.
There's the full body Lycra.
Is that making it appearance on a neoprene?
It is a wetsuit.
And I was wearing it at the peak, like noon in the desert.
40 to 50 degrees.
I was dying.
But, you know, it's all about the shirt.
shot. Yeah, how did you get out of that one, Caleb? I was in New Zealand.
It wasn't prison. I couldn't get there in time. And what is the song about,
like a woman? Obviously, there's a lot of meaning to it. It's quite an emotional song.
Yeah, I think it was just kind of like, um, there's no way around saying how, like,
after my breakup, like, how to be myself again, basically. Wow. Well, I appreciate you being so
honest in your song. Okay, so I don't know if you guys have seen, um, are you guys on TikTok?
a lot? I'm on TikTok.
Never.
But I know the concept.
I know what happens on there.
Okay. That's good. That's important for this next segment.
I've heard about the concept.
I've heard about it. I've read about it.
So I'm going to make you guys do a dance. No, I'm not going to go that.
So obviously, TikTok's a platform for people to discover music.
And it's also a way for people to alter music. So a lot of songs are going viral with
slowed down views.
of their original song.
So I thought since you guys,
especially you Caleb,
are a very talented music producer,
I would jump in the studio
and mess with a bunch of your songs
and slow them down
in progressive increments.
And you guys have to decide
which song of yours I've slowed down.
I love it.
Okay.
Okay, this is the first.
How slow are we going?
So it gets progressively slower.
Okay.
So you'll see,
and I haven't chosen the choruses either.
Okay.
Because I want it to be difficult for you guys.
I can't even remember some of the songs, I reckon.
That's it.
There's some throwbacks in there.
Yeah, cool.
I'm excited
Broods
Which song is this
Oh this one's easy
It's bridges
Correct
Okay see that's the easiest one
Yeah that's the easiest one
Appreciate you starting us off easy
We still play that one
Big hat
Alright next one
I like it
I like it
Peace of my mind
Yeah that's true
I love slowing down songs
I like it slow
I love slowing down songs
If you use any of these, you need to credit me as a producer.
I want my cut.
All right, next one.
I'll just slow it down, like it.
Four walls.
You guys are good.
It's almost like, we wrote these songs.
I really should have chosen more B-side songs,
like ones that you haven't played in a long time.
I think I just like, because I'm the lyric person, like,
I just hear the lyric and I'm like, yeah.
Whereas I'm like, that drum sounds,
I've never heard that before.
Like, what?
Next one I'm just going to leave for Caleb to do all on time.
I might just be sitting here for an hour.
I don't know.
Okay, this one should be not only the most intolerable to listen to,
but the hardest to guess.
I'm hoping.
Caleb, this one's up to you.
Guess what that song is?
It's got quite a lot of claps in it.
I don't even listen to the lyrics.
I can't hear the lyrics.
I don't even know what that one is.
L-A-F?
Oh, my God.
Wow, that was impressive.
Wow.
Four for four.
That's amazing.
We know our own song.
There's a lot of claps in that song.
And we still play that one.
So you guys have performed some of the biggest stages in the world, right?
Like Coachella, Splendor in the Grass.
You've performed on Seth Myers, James Corden.
What's been your favorite show ever that you guys have done?
You look back on, you're like, man, if I could relive that moment.
That is such a hard question.
Do you know what?
I really prefer small venues.
I feel like the last small venue we played in.
Salt Lake City was maybe one of the best shows. I don't know if it's because they don't drink or
it's like a dry state. They're all Mormons. Yeah. They just like, I love live music.
Get me out of no. Suppressed. I don't know. But they're always so. But they live for it.
Yeah. There's one guy that always turns up and he's like seven feet tall. And an all black's jersey.
And he always wears his all blacks jersey and he knows every single lyric of every song.
He's not even from New Zealand though. He just wears.
New Zealand.
The jersey.
And it's so good.
And he's there every single time.
Sometimes his brother, who's also seven foot, is there too.
Wow.
Shout out to the seven foot all-black swearing.
You guys, we were talking just before this interview, and I want to get it on
mic because I thought it was really interesting about you guys being on James Corden's
show.
And I asked if it was fun, and you were like, oh, it's so stressful.
Yeah.
The last time I think we did it was, and I was singing.
For the first time in front of anybody ever.
Yeah, that was the first time I'd sung in front of anybody that wasn't in my band.
Wow.
James caught a bigger stage in the world.
And there was pins and needles going up my arm slowly throughout the whole performance
and they'd got up to just pass my shoulders by the end of it,
and I thought it was just going to pass out, but I didn't.
That's so scary.
I took my hand off the mic for like two seconds, and it's just like shaking furiously.
Those things are so scary, though.
Like what a place to do your first, like, song from the people.
I've never sung since.
Because you're just, like, preparing all day for it.
And it's just like, and then you go and you black out for the short amount of time that you're actually doing the song.
And then you're like, did it happen?
I was just like, afterwards I was like, thanks Georgia for singing all the gigs.
Because you said you're there all day, eh?
All day.
And then you do your three minute performance.
And then you're like.
And everybody's coming in like, you're excited?
And I'm like, no, what?
You guys wrote heartlines with Lord, right?
I mean, this is throwing it back right now.
So you've teamed up with Kiwi artists in the past.
You're obviously open to saying she is the biggest Kiwi artist in the world.
If you guys had to right now decide on a current Kiwi artist who's out there that you guys have seen,
you've enjoyed listening to the music that you'd be interested in jumping in studio with.
Who do you reckon you'd choose?
Oh, there's so many.
There's so many.
Yeah, I think there's like just...
I really want to work with this band called Lips.
Shout out to Lips.
Where are they from?
Yeah.
Auckland?
Auckland, really?
Yeah.
Been to a couple of their shows and they are freaking awesome.
My fav is Rita May.
She's only released one song but I'm really obsessed with it and...
We've heard of demos and they've got to be amazing.
Yeah.
It's really exciting.
I think since Caleb's moved back to New Zealand, he's like been putting me on all the new Kiwi artists and like, man, there is so much awesome stuff coming out in New Zealand.
It's just so exciting.
It's the only reason why I'm coming to town, eh?
gigs and people's birthdays
and to talk to the edge
thanks man
appreciate
so you guys did live
the LA life for so long right
and you've been to the parties
you've seen the celebrities
I just want to delve into that
for a second
who is the person
you've been most nervous meeting
if you guys have
Fred Armisen
for sure
I don't know if people know who he is here
who's Fred Armisen
he's like Office and L
in Portlandia
and he drums for
Seth Mike
He's my favorite American comedian.
And he came out and told us how much he liked Peach when we played it on Seth Myers.
And I was just standing there.
And I had my like, and ears in my hand.
And I was just going, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack.
Because they're shaking so much.
I was just like, hey.
So what we've got from this interview is that Kayla gets the shakes a lot.
Kayle gets really nervous.
What about you, Georgia?
I'm trying to think, like, usually when we'd, like, go to these parties, I'd go with, like,
my three best friends in L.A. who are like, none of them are in the music industry and would all
just go to hang out with one another because it was so awkward. So if you're at a party, right,
and you see a really, like, who's the most famous person you've been at the same party with?
Assuming you probably haven't even talked to them there? Oh, like Lady Gaga.
Okay, so you're at a party with Lady Gaga. Do you guys, in your head being like Kiwis who are kind of like
tall poppy, you're like, I'm not going to talk to Gaga in a way. Absolutely not.
Unless we're in like the line to the bathroom together. Not when she walks in with Sam Smith and Mark
Gronson, you're not going to go say hi. I walked into this party and there's just so many famous people
and I just didn't really want or need to be there. And then I just see Jared James sitting at the
bottom of the garden just by himself and that he sees me and we just like only hang out with each other
for the whole night. Most Kiwi thing you ever are. It's way too daunting, eh? And we didn't
talk to anyone until Alisa from a naked and famous walked out. And we're like, oh, another person
we know. You just trying to find the Kiwis wherever we go.
honestly, we're just like, anybody got a Kiwi accent? Can we be friends?
We'll settle for an Aussie.
Exactly. Who's the nicest person you've met? You said earlier that James Gordon was actually
really friendly. Have you met any people? You've met any people? You've been like, wow,
because I suppose celebrities. Sam's the nicest person. Sam Smith is... Sam Smith, really?
Insanely sweet. Like, when we did that tour a while back, that was, I mean, one, because he was just
so kind and, like, as soon as we arrived on the tour, he, like, was sound checking and he just
jumped off stage to, like, give us hugs and be like, welcome to the tour.
And when we released the last record, Pop Monster, and he was like here for some reason on holiday.
And I was just like in a restaurant, he just walks past and he's just like waving through the window and just like comes into the restaurant.
And he's just like, hi, how are you?
I just want to say that all your music's awesome.
And I was just like, oh, thanks, man.
That's a cool moment.
That were very nice.
It was a fun tour.
Hey, well, thanks so much for coming in, guys.
Really appreciate it.
