Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a podcast from Rover. Mr. Gravy, welcome to New Zealand. Thank you. Does anyone call you that? Mr. Gravy? Mr. Gravy, occasionally, yeah. How are you finding New Zealand? This is your second time here?
Starting point is 00:00:12 Yes. How would you rank it in terms of countries you've visited? Is it in the top 10%? Would you move here? Good question. I've been to a lot of... Central America. I was thinking, I mean, I maybe would go...
Starting point is 00:00:30 with Australia, just because I really liked Melbourne. But I think after the U.S., this would be one of my next choices, yeah. Nice. I'd be here a lot, you know. Yeah, man. I feel like we've got that pool. You know, artists come here and they don't want to leave. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:00:45 A few of them who are like... It's a good energy out here, and the weather's cool, and I can just go back and forth, you know, have it always be summer. Yeah, yeah. Between the States and here. That's the nicest thing you've ever said, because the weather's been so shit this week. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, we got some good weather out in like Perth and Brisbane and stuff.
Starting point is 00:01:04 All right, I'm just going to jump. I'm going to jump in the deep end, man. We did the thing with older women start. In high school. In high school. Really? I had a cool experience with an older woman. And it's not like it's a like a fetish or anything.
Starting point is 00:01:18 I just thought. The preference. Yeah, I mean, a preference, but I'm not, you know, I'm not loyal to only. Let me load this down a little. Loyal to only older women. I just thought. You know, when I started making music, I was like, you know, this is like a little part of me that I want to, you know, get to the people and sort of show some love to the underappreciated community of older women. So I think I really have had a bit of an impact.
Starting point is 00:01:46 I see a lot of messages from people that are like, yo, I got with the milk because of you. Yeah, man, you planted your flag there. Yeah. No, I'm known. Yeah. It's like almost, there'll be a lot of times where people will see me and they'll be like, yo, you're at the milf guy. who don't know my music to be, oh, that's the milf guy. Like, I'll just get that all the time.
Starting point is 00:02:03 Which is okay. You've taken, like, other artists' appearance to award shows. Yes. And then you've dated adult stars. Are you dating anyone at the moment? No. No. I'm not.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Yeah. And those were, like, dates, you know? Like, we went on dates, but I'm more of a single type boy. Indeed. Did you ever date any of your friend's parents in high school? No. No, no, no. Well, the woman, uh, the woman, uh,
Starting point is 00:02:30 that I'm speaking up from high school was an associate's, I guess, sort of, they were, someone that was in a lot of my classes that I knew sort of well, and I sold weed to them once. It was their mom. But I don't think they know. I named a song after, but I have like 10 songs named after women, so I don't know if you see this. I don't think they're going to figure it out.
Starting point is 00:02:58 You got a one in ten chance. Yeah. Everyone's like looking through your back catalog to find their mom's names in there. All right, we're going to play a game of true or false Young Gravy. I'm going to quick fire some questions at you, things that I've read, things that I've possibly made up, and you tell me whether these are true or fictitious. Your first rap name was actually Mr. Butter. Yes, true.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Well, actually, a little steamer before Mr. Butter. And then I realized that people associated it with shit. Yeah, it sounds like it. Yeah, I thought it was tight, but, oh, man, Mr. Butter and then Young Gravy. Why did you move from Mr. Butter? I guess more people would call me Gravy just as a nickname even before I really wrapped and I just kind of felt more right. Mr. Butter, there's the period in there and I was like, oh, it's going to be, it's going to
Starting point is 00:03:45 cause problems, having a period of my name. I don't know why I thought that, but I did. Is it true you paid a kid $150,000 for the name? Yeah, yeah, a kid was a dick. He just, he'd trade. Both were making music going to the same name, but I started to pop off and he trademarked the name first. And then we had this whole long legal battle and I decided to get my 150K. Is it true that your dream co-lab is Chennai Twain?
Starting point is 00:04:12 It is not. I mean, as of late, yeah, because I met her and she invited me to late Geneva. She's way up your alley. To go, yeah, she invited me out there to go record for a week in Switzerland. And I'm like, I sadly have shows during that window, but we're going to try to make it work. She, before that, I mean, shit, my dream collab, probably Frank Sinatra, RIP. But, but yeah, I think that that's the current. I notice these are all people out of your lane of genre.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Is that intentional? You just like getting in it. Yeah, I like to kind of mix it up. And also, I mean, I had a list of dream rappers to collab with them that I got them all. Juicy J, young Dolph and Lowell Wayne. Yeah. That does happen. Check them.
Starting point is 00:04:54 And, of course, baby no money. They had a money, yeah. I mean, we came up together from the very start. He's such a funny dude, man. Yeah, he's great. He's great. We have our third album together, almost done. That's so exciting.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Is it true that you died in 2018? No, it was cap. Somebody just changed my Wikipedia to saying that I was dead, and everyone freaked out. And then I was posting things like, yo, I'm alive. I swear. And people were replying, like, this is so messed up. why would you say this? Like, they thought it was someone on my account pretending.
Starting point is 00:05:30 Like, they believed Wikipedia over me. They were like, I had to make a video and, like, everything. Video apology? People are dumb. Not an apology. I was just like, yeah, I'm alive, man. Video surprise. Someone posts this was taken a week ago.
Starting point is 00:05:43 Yeah, I was like, man. Is it true that Gordon Ramsey's a big fan? Yeah, well, his daughters are, so then I guess they just played around him a lot. But I've seen a lot of videos with him in it. with my music playing. Yeah. So, yeah, that's kind of forced out of him,
Starting point is 00:05:58 I think. But, you know, I like how he, you know, he judges food so hard. I'd like to have him review like an album of mine. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:06:05 that'd be quite cool. Yeah. And, like, reviewing something completely different. Yeah, and just like pitching me out.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Speaking of food, have you had a chance to try many New Zealand snacks? I think so. I had a lot of Australian ones, which I know was some crossover. Here I've had...
Starting point is 00:06:19 We are the exact same people. Pretty similar. In a lot of ways, yeah, I've had a lot of the old stuff. and last time I was here at some, but, you know, there was something I'm forgetting. Can I get your review?
Starting point is 00:06:32 Have you tried the Toffee Pop? No, I haven't tried Toffi Pop. Here you go, man. I bought us two bags. Cheers me up. Cheers, brother. Yeah, these are Toffee Pop bites because... This sounds good.
Starting point is 00:06:43 Simplicity. Okay. Yeah, man. These are in New Zealand delicacy. Mm-hmm. That's good. Yeah. I think a lot of things I wasn't super into.
Starting point is 00:06:56 Obviously, vegamite sucks. Well, sorry. I don't like begumite. What else? The meat pies you'll have. All right. This? This is it.
Starting point is 00:07:08 Tip top. I like tip top. I'll have really good sandwiches here, you know? And Asian food. Which I'd order ordering Mexican and Cuban. It was not... Nah, it's not the one, man. The Asian food hits.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Yeah, you just have a lot of Asians, but... Yeah, I'd say avoid... They would closer geographically. Exactly, yeah, no, it makes sense. So, so... Central America. We've been just playing it safe now with Asian food. Your track, Betty, huge.
Starting point is 00:07:34 First song to go into the Billboard Hot 100. I actually caught up with Dylan Francis when he was here in New Zealand, and I talked to him because he worked with you on the track, right? And he said, as soon as he knew the sample was cleared, and he knew it was you, he knew it was going to go. Did you feel the same way? I thought it was me big, but I didn't think it was That big.
Starting point is 00:07:53 Yeah. I thought it was going to end up being like, I don't know, maybe my top five, but I'd say it's on track to be my biggest. Do you think he had more confidence than you about it, or? I guess, yeah, sounds like it. Yeah, we're getting sued for it now. By Rick Astley. Didn't you clear the sample?
Starting point is 00:08:14 Mm-hmm. We could have a sample, but... Just can't talk that much about it, but... Yeah, that's right. Um, he's trying to find a little loophole. It's kind of lame, but... Damn it, Rick Astley. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:08:26 Which is good. I got to beat that. Such a high approval rating. Oh, well. If you were gonna, you know, sample another iconic track and do another song with it, is there anything that's top of the list? You know, I'd love to hear a rapper try and do something with The Killers, Mr. Brightside.
Starting point is 00:08:41 I think it's probably really difficult song to do anything with. Yeah, that'd be hard. But that song's, like, been in the charts forever. There's a lot of songs that. that I've tried sampling. I have a lot in my catalog, too. It's just like the clearance processes of pain
Starting point is 00:08:56 and there's some artists that just won't clear it. I'm trying to have a good one that's coming up. I'm sampling out of the walls of the flowers. It's like the Nutcracker theme. It's like, nah, nah, nah, nah, da-da-dun-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da. That shit's coming out soon. What else have I sampled recently?
Starting point is 00:09:18 What else did I want to? I don't know. There's a lot of songs like you said, Mr. Brightside, where like you want to hear it as a sample, and everyone's always like, oh, you got to sample Stacey's mom, you gotta try this. But it's like sometimes it just doesn't work. And you've got to make the track right before you get the sample cleared, like so you can send it to them. Yeah, it's just a waste of time. Yeah, exactly, and it's not likely.
Starting point is 00:09:34 And then like, yeah, I mean, if a song has drums on it already and you can't get the stems, like, it's just going to sound like ass. Yeah, everything would kind of clash. Well, um, welcome back to New Zealand, man. I hope the show goes well tonight. And thanks so much for catching up with me, bro. Thank you, man. You should come. It's gonna be lit. Our last Laughlin show was crazy. Next day, I was in Wellington. I broke my hand.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Doing what? Crowdsurfing. I didn't get dropped for anything. I just got punched in the hand really hard. Why do you guys do it to yourself? I talked to Flum yesterday. He dislocated his shoulder crowd surfing. Yeah, I haven't done it in a while now. I've done it in a while. I used to do it at every show. But yeah, it was in Wellington.
Starting point is 00:10:08 And that was like the beginning. Last time we started in New Zealand and came to Australia after. Yeah. And yeah, I had a broken hand the whole time. It's pretty trash. Any chance you'll stage drive tonight? No. Probably not.
Starting point is 00:10:20 Especially not in New Zealand. I just like, I'm sorry, but I can't. Too many animals. Maybe when I heard Dunedin goes really crazy, we're there tomorrow. No, I'm not going to crowdsurf there. Yeah, man. They're known for like, it's like a student town. And the biggest problem the police have in Dunedon is that the students burn couches.
Starting point is 00:10:36 Okay, I heard that. I heard that. Oh, sorry, that's your way. I'm a little moment there. It was cute. All right. All right. Cheers, man.
Starting point is 00:10:42 When we get a quick back before we are. Okay, perfect.
