Hello, this is The Secret Mum Club. I'm Safina.
And I'm Emma.
And welcome to your Thursday's episode, where we're getting into the summer holiday show and tell.
Each week, Emma and I will be bringing in one new activity that we'll be doing with the children.
So you can give it a go or tell us what you've been doing instead.
And we'll be joined by a special expert guest today.
Shall we jump on in?
And we'll be joined by a special expert guest today. Shall we jump on in?
So Emma, last week I spoke about the genius activity that Stacey Solomon shared on her socials. Do you remember?
I do.
The chalk and the salt to make the coloured sand.
Yeah, dyeing salt different colours.
Yes. But I want to know, what have you been doing this week?
Well.
What have you got for us this week, actually?
I'm not really an arts and crafter.
Shock.
Shock horror.
Mummy doesn't like the mess.
But we have been going swimming a lot.
You have.
I need to know, how is she taking to the pool?
So Sadie loves it because I'm basically getting her in there so young that she doesn't have an opinion great what we messed up with joseph was we left it too late
yes and then he was like no what time did you start with joseph because i started with colby
about probably about 10 months well we went on holiday when he was like four months and then
six months and he was like not a fan but couldn't really fight it. But then I started swimming lessons with him when he was like,
I want to say like 15 months.
And he was willing to just not like it.
Sit on the pool and paddle his toes.
Yeah, it was really hard work.
So I did it for like a couple of weeks and I was like, nah.
But with Sadie, I'm going to get her in there.
And they start their lessons from three months.
Hold on, you're full blown putting her into Olympic breaststroke?
Well, no.
Also, have you been watching the olympics
don't you just feel like you could i could do an olympian yeah i know i keep seeing all this stuff
on social media it's like just watching the olympic gymnastics and thinking that i thought
the other day i can do a vault i can i can do this yeah i couldn't even get up the fucking stairs of
the tree without blowing out my ass so i don't think i like to keep in my mind that i could be
a professional athlete yeah Yeah, me too.
Or you could.
No disrespect to the athletes.
No, they're phenomenal.
I feel like I could do the high bars, you know?
Yeah.
Anyways, so they start lessons at three months, but I was just taking her for a free swim in the pool.
Nice.
Unbeknownst to me, there were only two people in the lesson that day.
So she was like, are you here for the lesson?
I was like, no, we're just having a free swim.
She was like, come in, have a free taster.
I was like, well, she's only four months. I think she might be a bit young. She said, no, we're just having a free swim. She was like, come in, have a free taster. I was like,
well,
she's only four months.
I think she might be a bit young.
She said,
no,
we start at three months.
Stop it.
In you come,
immediately starts throwing water
all over her head.
Sadie's like,
what the hell?
Dunk her in.
Dunking her in.
They didn't dunk her.
When they go,
ah,
how?
How?
Honestly,
the other kids,
the other kids are basically
Tom Daley,
Olympic diving.
Fucking hell,
I can't.
I was terrified for her.
They don't do that on the first one,
but she did say we'll be doing that next week.
Don't come back next week.
So I didn't go back.
Good.
I am planning to though, because I want her,
I do want her to do it.
And seeing how young the other kids are in there doing it
is actually amazing.
Do you know what?
I actually might do it with Renly.
Do you think you will?
Yeah, I didn't do it with the other two.
Colby's great at swimming now. Dotsie's I'm going to just have a floaty for the rest of my
life right you can't be 46 with a floaty i mean you can you can you can there won't be many other
46 i just said it's a life skill we need to know bubba like proper proper swim yeah but she's not
having but i do think because you had all your dramas over your swimming lessons
and I do think too stressful even just taking them for the free swim is getting them so used
to like being in the pool building confidence in the water like even we have taken Joseph and I
was thinking like god he'll absolutely hate it but they change all the time like they're so fickle
aren't they and he actually was quite into it so I do think you can just so was he there for the
free swim or just you and Sadie?
So it's been just me and Sadie mostly because I do it on a day where he goes to nursery.
Because taking two kids swimming is not the one.
But we have taken him there once.
And he liked it.
He was pretty keen.
Like he's not.
He's very tentative.
Maybe he'll like it a bit more if like he sees Sadie there.
Yeah, exactly.
Like a family swim.
You could go for a family swim.
Stefan would love that. I just need to pin down my husband first. go for a family swim. Stefan would love that.
I just need to pin down my husband first.
I was about to say.
Stefan will love it once you get in there.
Yeah, he's never there.
But I think every time we go, he gets a little bit more confident,
a little bit more bold in the water.
So, yeah, it's been a really nice thing to do.
And also, it's been glorious weather.
It has.
And they've got an outside pool.
All the three outside pools are open near us. Are they near you? Yeah, it's been glorious weather. It has. And we've been, they've got an outside pool. So we've been swimming outside.
All the free outside pools are open near us.
Are they near you?
Yeah.
The Lido's.
Mine's actually, I've been going to the one at the gym, but the Lido's are open as well.
Yeah.
And there's a little splash pad in the park around the corner from us.
So we've been doing that as well.
That's adorable.
So it's nice.
Summer's finally arrived and, you know, we're making the most of it.
Hold on.
I'll pack the fuck up.
It's only here till Saturday.
I know.
And then we're off for a...
And then it's miserable again.
Yeah.
Yeah. We're back to reality. Yeah. I know. And then we're off for a... And then it's miserable again. Yeah, yeah.
We're back to reality.
Yeah.
Put your winter clothes out.
Put your winter clothes...
Put your swimsuits away.
Yeah.
Pack it all up.
Yeah, well, that's why we're making the most of it.
We've been going basically every day.
Love that for you.
Love that for us.
So we've also had a couple of show and tell messages in from our listeners.
Stop it.
Are you ready?
This one.
Isn't it really funny?
Do you never think people have actually listened?
Yeah. They put in their own... People are listening to her. Yeah. Yeah. Garbage. Right. This one. Isn't it really funny? Do you never think people have actually listened? They put in their own.
People are listening to her.
Yeah.
Garbage.
Right, this one's from Abby.
She says, hey girls, I'm a step mum to two boys.
We've just had a glorious weekend.
So in between their football games, we lived at the park.
Blanket, picnic, sun cream, snacks and drinks.
It's the cheapest weekend and the best.
That's honestly a dream.
We've done that too.
I love it.
I love it so much.
Do you know what I actually have been doing recently?
Searching to renovate a caravan.
You know, like a mobile.
Never not looking for a project, do you?
No, no.
I just think that would be quite fun.
And then imagine all the possibilities.
What, you just pitch up somewhere?
Just pitch up.
Go away every weekend.
School holidays just pop off and go.
Yeah.
No worry about catching a flight because I'm...
That would be perfect for you actually because you don't like flying.
Tour the UK.
Tour the UK in your caravan.
Honestly.
Yeah.
I think it'd be such a riot.
Although I did find one, like a drivey one.
Yeah.
I feel like we would be like the Brady Bunch.
An RV.
Yeah.
They call it, don't they?
Yeah.
Camper van.
Yeah.
Do you think we could drive to America?
I've done it in America, but I didn't drive there.van. Do you think we could drive to America? I've done it in America, but I didn't drive
there. Do you think we could get there
from here? Do you think there's a possibility
of us driving? On a
ferry? It'd be long though,
wouldn't it? But six weeks holiday,
we've got all six weeks. You've got all the time
in the world. We've got all
the time in the world.
I actually love the idea of that because
I would not sleep in a tent.
No.
But I would sleep in a caravan.
Or do you get scared that someone's going to steal me from a tent?
Oh, just horrible.
Like cold and then sweaty and then small and cramped.
I did it when we were little, but I just feel like someone would steal us.
No.
And also, you put all your worldly belongings in a piece of fabric.
Yeah.
Someone could just slice it open.
You just walk.
There's a zip.
You don't even need to
cut it they'll just what yeah pop on in or an animal or anything bears it's not safe it's not
safe but if you do it i'm all here for it honestly good for you you're you're braver for me but yeah
that's that's wonderful isn't it i love that so easy we did that the other day with two of joseph's
little friends and it was just so cute out in the sun all day but that fresh air in your lungs just hits different doesn't it yeah well our
park is actually next to a major road in london but yeah if you've got the green space then that's
lovely for you i'm near the new you're lucky you're near an area of outstanding natural
we haven't actually is that what it's called i't want to say. I look in the mirror every day and I try and tell myself.
I try to be humble, you know.
No, you're lucky you've got that on your doorstep.
There's loads of greenery round by us.
Yeah.
We are really lucky.
I know near the sea.
Am I?
Southampton.
I don't think I have any sea near me.
What?
You can't go in that sea though.
That's for the boats.
No, but isn't there a beach?
No.
What?
Not in Southampton.
Hang on, I've been misled my whole life. Is there beach so i don't know about no there's like there's a port there's
a port obviously yeah but there's like where do you have to go to the beach not far leon solon
bournemouth is that close high cliff new milton no they're probably like an hour wow from us
southampton's been having this got. You can have like a little bay.
And in the forest, they've got like little ponds you can go in.
You can swim in?
Yeah, if you want to swim with a cow.
There's cows in them.
Joseph would love that.
There is a cow, isn't there, Colbs?
Colby's here today.
We went to the one down.
Colby's looking at you like, no, mum.
Canada Common.
Was it Canada Common?
No.
What's the other one?
The other lake that we went to.
And there was just three cows swimming in the lake.
Oh.
Do you remember that?
Yeah, see?
I'm not crazy.
I'll pay you a fiver.
So no, the beach.
He's shaking his head at me.
That's what she's talking about.
I can't remember the name of the beach that's in the forest.
I can't for the life of me. That sounds like Joseph's dream come true, though.
Swimming with cows.
He would swim with the cows.
He would.
He'd be loving it.
But no, we don't have beaches near us.
Wow.
About an hour from us.
Wow.
But yeah, just get outside.
Little picnic.
Can't go wrong.
Yeah.
Just sit in a field.
Even if it's just a field, a green near your house.
Yeah.
Just go and sit in it.
It's like a whole change
children don't get it they don't understand yeah we can go to the the park at the top of the road
near us and the babies love it yeah love a little bit outside and like we say make the most of it
before it starts raining again yes so thank you abby appreciate you hope you had the best time
this one yes hi soph and emma i have a show and tell suggestion make bath bombs with the children
It says, hi, Soph and Emma.
I have a show and tell suggestion.
Make bath bombs with the children.
This is a bit up your street.
Yes, it is.
My two, six and eight.
Love it.
You only need bicarbonate of soda, citric acid, corn flour, any food colouring and essential oils.
Do you have all that stuff in your house?
Probably have most of it.
If you're baking.
I'm not really a baker.
Yeah, I've got it all apart from citric acid.
Yeah, I don't have citric acid Also I don't have essential oils
I actually do have some essential oils
Do you?
I think it was from when I did hypnobirthing
You casually just massaging each other you two
I was doing all that like breathing the lavender in off the hanky
And everything you know until the emergency C section
I think they're quite easy to get them though aren't they?
Yeah easy to get hold of
She says they love making their little creations and then using them at bath time.
Lots of love from Amy.
Yeah, I won't be using them in all that thrush.
Crumbs.
It's just a thrush waiting to happen, isn't it?
Babies love them though, don't they?
They do, yeah.
Even if you did them in the garden and then did them in the...
In the little water table.
Yeah, that would still be fun to watch them dissolve, wouldn't it?
Yeah.
Some parents are so crafty.
So creative.
Honestly, it blows my mind where they get it from.
I know.
I've been promising Colby egg muffins all week.
We haven't made them.
We need to make some egg muffins.
That's as crafty as I get.
I'm like, oh, let's just make some lunch.
Yeah, mine are food related because I like the reward at the end of it.
To eat.
To eat. To eat.
Apples and bananas.
Oh my God, we watched that on YouTube.
Stop it.
Wiggly, wiggly.
And then it's like,
ooples and bananas.
And it changes the pronunciation every time.
The wriggle, the wiggle.
I don't know, it's just one of those random ones
that comes up.
And they wear like the coloured outfits.
It's just a man, isn't it?
Eat, eat, eat.
Apples and bananas.
Oh my God, I can't believe we've got an internet thing in common.
I actually know what you're talking about.
That's not the internet.
That's Netflix.
YouTube.
No, it's on Netflix.
All right.
Thank you so much, Amy.
We'll have to give it a go.
Yeah.
I'll do it if you do it.
You do it first.
And if it's a success, I'll do it.
If you have a fun summer holidays show and tell activity idea
why not get in touch yeah you can email us hello at secret mom pod.com or with secret mom pod on
tiktok and instagram and next we'll welcome our special guest Welcome back to The Secret Mum Club.
Over the school holidays, we're focusing on sharing all the fun
and the engaging activities that you can do with your children.
After all, we all need some inspiration on how to keep our little ones occupied.
And it's time to introduce our guest for our show and tell.
Are you ready?
It's Jack Plummer!
I'm here.
I've made it.
I have made it.
Finally, the man, the myth, the legend.
I feel like there is a person behind the name.
Yes.
We talk about you all the time.
I hear quite a lot, don't I?
So just doesn't stop going on about you.
Honestly.
Fantastic.
That makes it sound very weird.
Fantastic. I'm excited to finally meet you. Put a face on about you. Fantastic. That makes it sound very weird. Fantastic.
I'm excited to finally meet you.
Put a face to the name.
Yes.
It is lovely to meet you both and lovely to be on here.
And also, because I sing your praises all the time,
it's nice for people to actually see,
because I always say how funny you are,
and people generally from your socials don't see how fucking hilarious you are.
We spend far too much time just laughing, don't we?
100%.
Honestly, when I'm at football, I'm like
you better go and train the kids. Sometimes I think
I'm actually wasted as a football coach. I should be
a comedian. You should be on here. I should be
on here. This is
full time now, yeah? Yeah, you're
in. This is it. This is your moment.
You've got your own muff, yeah?
I'm enjoying this muff.
This is a nice muff. Loves a muff.
Should we explain who you are?
We haven't got into that. I'm sure they all know who I a nice muff. Loves a muff. Should we explain who you are? I don't know if we actually said it.
We haven't got into that.
I'm sure they all know who I am.
They should know.
Safina's followers will definitely know
that you're Colby's football coach.
I am.
Okay.
Yeah, it's basically I coach players individually
away from, say, whatever club or grassroots team they're on
to get the extras.
Yeah, and you do a range of children, don't you?
Yep.
That's today in compliance.
Ages.
Age range, yeah.
There's all different ages.
What age do you start?
Well, they get younger.
From about five to six years old, all the way up to professional, yeah.
Yeah.
Can I ask you a question?
Yes, go on.
It's the journalist in me, itching to get out.
Oh, here we go.
What's your football background?
This actually really excited me because I only found this out not too long ago.
Okay.
Yeah, so I started football probably when I was about seven.
By eight years old, I got picked up by Portsmouth Football Club.
From there, I went through the whole academy system
until I was 16.
At 16, I then did my apprenticeship with Portsmouth
when they were in the Premier League.
So basically what that does is like a two-year,
basically learning the trade of being a professional.
You start getting paid, you move out,
and you move to Portsmouth.
And then at 18, I got released from Portsmouth uh and then at 18 I got released
from Portsmouth and then I had a few options from there I decided that my option was I got a
scholarship in California oh wow so I went to California did a four-year degree played out there
after there uh I then got a contract in Germany went and played there for a bit and then from
Germany I went to Australia oh my god yeah traveled traveled um uh went out to Australia and played after that picked up a bit
of an injury uh and then decided you know what um I could carry on but I wanted a little bit more
stability I'd say and and get back home yeah and started coaching wow isn't it fascinating because
I think sometimes you just see
like football coaches i think for the teams like the team that colby plays in it tends to be like
a parent coaches the team doesn't it or there's a parent manager so it doesn't tend to necessarily
be somebody that has of a football background yeah so when we yeah so when we obviously met
you didn't we and we were like, we'll go to this football coach
who's been recommended by a few people.
We'll go over to you.
And then we were like, oh, he's actually, you know, he's good.
I just assumed it would just be like a dad.
You assumed he'd be rubbish.
Yeah, I did what?
He nicks me.
He actually knows what he's talking about.
You just automatically assume, oh, it's just a dad.
He's just running a little football club.
Oh, this is great.
And then when we were obviously actually doing it, it was like, shit, no, he's actually, yeah, he's just running he's just running a little football club oh this is great and then when we were obviously actually doing it it was like shit no he's actually yeah he's professional
legit yeah wow how exciting right jack we know you're an expert at keeping our children active
and interested in exercise but we do need to know do you have a few show and tell summer holiday
activity ideas for us um yes i do so i have an academy uh it's an online academy
and basically what this does is you log into it and it shows a whole library of exercises that
kids can do football players can do but also i've got a section where it's just exercise as well
um where basically the parent and the player or the parent and the child will watch
the library and do it together um and what these are is a whole library of strength conditioning
ball work drills uh and there's also some real active circuit stuff now what i've tried to
encourage is i've looked at a few libraries that people have made before.
And the problem is with it is that I feel it would be maybe two footballers that can pass back to each other.
The problem is that if there's a mum out there or a dad out there that has never played football,
it's going to be very hard for them to serve that ball or do it the way that a player needs it. So what I've done is I've constructed a full library
where mums or dads can actually serve to them.
And I've taught them how to serve,
not teach them how to play football,
but whether it's rolling it in, throwing it in.
And what the biggest thing for me as a coach
is I'll make it hard.
I'll make it tough.
I'll make it challenging.
Because in my opinion, I don't treat them like kids.
I treat them as footballers.
So for me, I want to work them.
I want to challenge them.
I want to make it hard.
I want to make them hungry for it.
And I believe they're stronger than what we think they are.
I think sometimes we can be a bit soft and they actually love being challenged.
And every day we can get out and work them harder.
And there's things to compete
on can you get it quicker can you work on this can you get stronger um but what i said to you
didn't i is that you're paying for you to do the private coaching so not only are you paying the
service i want to know that i'm doing it correctly because then i don't want through the six weeks
holiday now for colby to get lazy or me not passing to him correctly. Yes, I understand.
And then it all kind of goes out the window
because you're investing so much time
as well as your money into doing it.
And especially you
because I've seen you pass the ball back
and you are useless.
You are useless.
You back the fuck up.
I've got unbelievable techers, Jeff.
You can't keep up with me, Jack.
No, to be fair, you're not too bad.
You say, listen, sit down on the bench.
You're showing me up.
Good passing.
You done a video on it the other day on your gram and I was like, look, he be fair, you're not too bad. You say, listen, sit down on the bench, you're showing me up. Lock the ankle, good passing. You done a video on it
the other day on your gram
and I was like,
look, he's saying
that the mums are great.
Her take is alright.
He's basically talking about me.
What's Chris like?
He's alright.
He's alright, Chris.
He's good.
Yeah, he is good.
Yeah, in step pass,
locked his ankle,
passes it back,
good confidence.
That's what I do.
Lock it in.
Lock it in.
Lock it in.
Strong.
Lock it like a jam.
Bam, bam.
I'm sitting, when you're saying like mums and dads that can't do it, I Lock it in. Strong. Lock it like a jam. Pow. Badda. Badda.
When you're saying like mums and dads that can't do it,
I'm sitting there thinking I'd smash it.
Again.
I love that.
That's what we want.
It's like saying I could be an Olympic athlete.
I just think I could do everything better than I actually could. I feel like your possibilities are endless.
Yeah.
She'll be a pro.
Well, when you walked in this morning, I thought,
is this an ex-footballer?
That's what I thought.
And I didn't want to ask that in case, do you know what I mean? It's a bit awkward that in case do you know what I mean yeah we just met yeah yeah so I just sort of played it cool but
I did think that yeah ex-pro yeah not a lot of people know that about me yeah yeah she's an ex-pro
yeah yeah sure okay shall we go in with another one what other activities have you got for our show and tell okay so my my
philosophy around with the kids is i believe that when you challenge them they want to do it more
but what we've got to do is i think a parent child relationship obviously i'm a coach it's
slightly different so it needs to be rather than the parent be in a coach's level,
the parent needs to be with the child, with the player,
and they need to compete against them.
That's what I think.
So, for instance, say you're going to do a circuit of such
where you've got to run to the first cone, do 10 press-ups,
second cone, eight press-ups, six, and then run back.
Don't just watch them. Don't just watch them.
Don't just watch them.
Do it.
Nice.
Do it.
And also-
It's like a personal trainer.
Yeah.
Also, what I would say with this is a lot of people
doubt themselves, right?
Yeah.
And I think a lot of parents will actually not do activities
since they were young.
And then they'll stand there on the side and go,
cool, I can do that.
Then all of a sudden, you are forced into a situation
where you do it with your child
and then maybe you go,
I'll tell you what,
I can actually do that.
I want to do it more.
Then all of a sudden,
what a great bonding for you and your child
to go,
Dad, can I...
Can we go do them circuits?
Can I go do them circuits?
I'll beat you this time.
Yeah, yeah.
But don't all be, you know,
wet wipes and let them just win beat
them make them tough and then right i'm not saying smash them to pieces i'll smash colby all the time
and every run every press up you know but what i would say is don't be too it's a really good
life lesson yeah let's be tough you're not always always going to win. No. And they've got to learn that. No problem.
Cry.
Not a problem.
Because let's go again tomorrow.
Are you going to turn up?
Are you going to work harder?
And let's get to it.
I love it though.
Because I just think through life,
you're not always going to just win at everything.
And I think it's such a good lesson
to teach them so little.
Yeah.
But that sounds like we're being mean,
but in a nice way, you know. Yeah, and then they win sometimes, but not all the time. No. See, my daughter's two and we're being mean but in a nice way you know
yeah
sometimes
but not all the time
no
see my daughter's two
and she's never beat me
in a race yet
she has not beat me
in a race
at the moment
we're only training
about two to three hours
a day
because she's two
so I do want to up that
if she wants to be
the greatest footballer
of all time
and I said
at the end of the day
we haven't got time
to be messing around
we're nearly two
it's about time you grow up yeah if you're going to be pro by 16 it was the other day when we were down at the end of the day, we haven't got time to be messing around. No. We're nearly two. Yeah. It's about time you grow up.
Yeah, if you're going to be pro by 16.
It was the other day when we were down at the training
and there was a lady with her little girl and she was kicking the ball around.
You were like, I need to just ask, not being weird,
how old is she?
Because my daughter cannot kick a ball like that.
Cannot kick a ball like that, but lucky.
She's three.
My daughter was about 18 months.
She was at three.
So I was panicking.
I was coaching.
I'm thinking, that little girl might be ahead of my little girl
because she's kicking.
My little girl still handballs it.
She still picks it up.
I know what you're thinking.
Is she behind because she's picking the ball up?
Why does she not know the rules?
Why is she not the rule?
We go over the rules probably about three hours a night.
She's not taking it in.
She's not listening.
She's not taking it in.
She's nearly two. And it's a bit like when I go in the not taking it in she's not taking it in she's nearly two
and it's a bit like
when I go in the park
I don't want people
looking over
and seeing that
my daughter's
picking that ball up
it's gone
how embarrassing
but
there's still time
there is still
there is still time
but in all seriousness
it is great to teach them
at such a young age
too
that we can't always
win at everything
and we've got to work hard.
It's refreshing to hear someone say that
because we were talking about how Sports Day is all about,
like there's no winners now.
But sometimes, and sometimes they are going to win
and it's going to feel great.
Yes.
But they're not always going to win.
And they need to learn that.
Yeah, but also what I would say on that
is there is a child out there,
I probably was one of them,
that maybe in class you weren't the best.
No.
I wasn't the best at maths, English.
I wasn't the best, yeah.
People getting A stars and everything.
But I'll tell you what I was the best at is athletics, as running, as football.
When it got to sports day, I was the king.
Yeah.
That was my day.
That was your day to shine.
So I won.
I represented our school.
But if you get me back in the classroom, I wasn't.
So give me my day.
Yeah.
Right?
I've got my day. These kids. You can't have your day now. So give me my day. Yeah. Right? I've got my day.
These kids,
there's kids out there.
Sorry.
Can we bring that back?
Yeah.
With kids now,
it's okay to say,
hey,
you come third.
Right?
Guess what?
There's a second and third.
Let's go to work.
Yeah.
If you want to get quicker,
if you want to get stronger,
if you don't want to come last,
you have to work harder.
Not go, everyone everyone wins because guess what
not everyone does win
no
so true
so what an absolute
life advice today
absolutely
I'm full of it
you literally are
six hours
six hours
I'll book this in
for about six
and then tomorrow
we're on another six
yeah
I'm scared
and do we have another one
what's our third one
third activity third one what's our third one third activity uh third
one is a very important one and it actually doesn't matter what age the child is and this
is about individuality so it's the players that will train and have a library to be able to do
drills or strength or speed work on their own okay Now, let's say your child is six,
seven, eight. They're not going to jump on, read it, go down a park on their own. I understand that.
But what it does, what they can do is you can guide them by showing them. They can watch it.
And I don't want the parent to actually set up the drill themselves. I want them to do it
themselves. They might get it wrong. That's no problem.
But the process is they watch something,
they learn the drill,
so they put the cones out or they put the ball out or whatever the drill is,
and they go complete it themselves.
So then they've got to learn
how to start doing things on their own.
Because what I find of coaching is it's easier to turn up
and I say, look, this is the drill.
This is what we're doing.
This is what we're working on.
And really, they're just doing the motions.
They're not thinking.
We need to get them thinking, why am I doing this?
And when I set this up, am I setting up correctly?
Why am I setting up?
How far?
And we just want a little bit more thought process from them
so we're not teaching robots.
We're actually giving them a little bit of license to go out there.
And guess what?
They'll get it wrong.
Of course they will.
But then they're going to come back to me.
We guide them, but we don't do it for them.
That's our biggest thing.
But get them to learn.
And trust me, once again, my six, seven, eight-year-olds are unbelievable.
Their intelligence, their speed, how they think.
And it's just because I give them the licence
to do it
and they're all capable
of so much more
than what we think
I'm all about that
independent play as well
because parents don't
always have the time
to be doing it with you
they might have other
children to look after
or jobs to be doing
so the fact that you
can do it by yourself
yeah and this is what
I was saying
because we were talking
about that you know
Colby does the
Watches Jack
well I say watches
because obviously
the academy is an
online based system so obviously you do your classes don i say watches because obviously the academy is an online based
yes system so obviously you do your classes don't you you also have the academy which is online which
just allows people all over the world to be able to to um to yeah to tune in and do it and i think
it's so good now right in the school holidays being that one we don't have all the money in
all the world to go out and spend money on expensive
days out but to have something at home that they can watch they can do independently we can get
involved with them but also to be out in the garden out in the fresh air and exercising i just
think it's phenomenal and i think the big the biggest thing is what what i try and do with a
lot of my staff is to get them to work hard
without them knowing they're working hard.
It's got to be fun.
It's got to be challenging.
You've got to be thinking.
If I just said run there, run back 100 times, how boring.
And I'm thinking about every breath, every step,
where you've got to create something for them that is, tell you what,
there's got to be a reward here.
And actually the reward isn't a reward, a reward is slightly different. The reward is, oh my,
how good does this feel that I've beat my time? That feels, I've improved. Guess what that does
to me? Smashes my motivation. I then go, I want to do it more. The worst is when you sit there and
everything's the same, same, same same you have to change them harder another step
another step another step and that's how you become fitter stronger in the best possible way
and it gets them off of sitting there watching tv yeah you can even set yourself a little dick
and set themselves a little chart couldn't they yeah where you like put it on the fridge like if
you were to do it so you could record and yeah it's actually on the academy a lot of it will log how fast you've done it yeah yeah 100 and and i think the biggest thing
to have that success with it is it's not just giving your child it it's about you don't want
to force them to do anything but you've got you've got to push them to a certain level to be like
we've done it today yeah hey, remember yesterday how you felt?
Yeah.
When you felt incredible because you got quicker.
And then when they walk in, I do it to my kids all the time,
I say, God, you're looking stronger.
And I tell you what.
They love it.
Honestly, they just, their little eyes just,
and you can tell after that, run as fast as they can.
And that's what you want to build in them.
We don't want to just say, look, everything's great.
You want to be like, look, if you work hard,
you can be whatever you want to be.
And with the football, with the coaching,
there's so much more to it.
Not everyone's going to be a footballer.
I understand that.
But you've got to treat them professional.
You've got to treat them like they can be.
Because A, they can be.
But also, they're going to use all these work ethics
in every part of their lives.
Yeah, in whatever they do.
A hundred percent.
About working hard.
It doesn't just go into that.
It will go into everything.
So, yeah, that's what I'd like to keep on.
This has changed Colby's confidence massively.
And it's not just about playing football.
And this is what I was trying to explain on my Instagram the other day, is that's not just about playing football it's literally shaping them as a tiny person yeah how they're
going to deal with challenges through not only school but going obviously to bigger school and
then going on like this is their whole this is the start of their whole life and to shape them
and to have something that's not only teaching them something but it's well teaching them to
play football but it's also teaching them really strong life lessons
and I think
that's huge
and Colby's
grown so much
like when did
Colby start
with you
October
was it
October
November
October last year
wasn't it
October last year
hasn't even been
that long
yeah
and he's changed
so much
you're always saying
that how much
he's done for him
he's honestly
grown so much
from a lad
that would never
go anywhere
wouldn't want
to do parties
wouldn't want
to go out
he'd be happy just plodding at home and play his tablet or play his playstation or things
like that would never he'd go to the park and things but was a little bit of a shell of himself
he wouldn't wouldn't now he talks to everybody he walks into a session every week some weeks the
boys are completely different yeah some weeks not everyone can do the same session every week but it's always different it literally never phases him it doesn't matter if
they're younger than him older than him he just throws himself in that in you know september last
year he would have never done that never in a million years and i think i think it's important
to um with how we how we treat them i do not baby these kids i do not see them as we treat them. I do not baby these kids. I do not see them as kids.
You treat them generally like your friends.
Yeah.
And I will talk to them, I'll banter them,
and they'll banter back.
And what that does, it breaks the ice.
Any new player I get, give away my secrets now,
every new player I get, when they walk over,
they're nervous, right?
I've got a bit of a reputation.
I've trained very good players.
I've trained Premier League players.
And they'll walk over and I can tell they're scared. the first thing i'll say is are you rubbish are you any good or are you rubbish and straight away they're like oh i'm good
and we laugh breaks it done yeah all that intimidation all that whereas if i just go
right this what we're going to do but you've got to break it up and then the power of having banter with a kid
really gets them to go i'll tell you what they'll banter me back now yeah they start having that
that a little bit no well what are you here then yeah yeah what are you this is for the good group
yeah yeah which brings out again a great character yeah yeah and they and it's not too serious but when it's time to work
it's time to work yeah and and i will light them up if they they start messing around and and no
one will come to a session and work harder than at my sessions but i'll tell you what not not one
kid leaves going oh this is oh this is too tough or they turn up and they are focused and i am hot
on them yeah from the minute they're there.
And now I've started pushing with the academy that next level.
I say to players, look, the training session doesn't start,
if your session's at six, it doesn't start at six.
It starts on the car journey on the way.
So now I've said that to the parents.
You've got to be thinking about it.
You've got to be talking about it.
What am I about to go into?
So I've got to be mentally focused. I've got to be talking about it what am i about to go into so i've got to be mentally focused i've got to be driven so when i turn up i am ready to
go and the parents are amazing they're just like yep he did it on the car journey he was focusing
he had his music he was stretching when he got there he and then it's like getting ready for a
big game honestly that is but then what i, that is what's taking everything into life
is you can,
if you have them character traits,
you think more detailed,
you push them.
And we're talking about six or seven year olds at times.
Do you know what I mean?
I'm not going,
oh,
I wait till they're 14.
No,
I treat everyone the same.
But I think having that mantra though,
of being like,
right,
it's football time.
We've got to go.
We've got to take it seriously.
Again,
because you are, we, you know, we are, you know, you're paying to go.
You're investing a lot into it.
Yeah, yeah.
Because you want them to have the best experience and do what they want to do.
And Colby generally really loves it.
And we do it not because we want him to play football great.
We do it because, one, it makes him happy, but two, it makes him confident.
And being that what we do now, that just sets him up for school.
Like in the mornings for school, he has his own little routine,
what he likes to get up and what he gets up and does.
And I think that's down to what you do.
It's like, right, we get in the car, football starts in the car, let's stretch.
There's so much in the game and so much around doing the fitness
that it sets them up like a day,
morning before they go to school,
you know?
Yeah, you can apply it to anything.
Yeah, anything.
I'm wondering how I can get Joseph on it.
What about four months?
Too young?
You haven't started joining yet.
I'll get Sadie on it before long.
Sadie and Renly,
they're coming to GIO.
Yeah.
