Starting point is 00:00:00 Well, my audio is recording now, and if you're just joining us, I am Jacques, and we have... Oh, you have Sweet Palma, yeah. Sweet Palma and... Sensitive Jacques. Sensitive Jacques. Oh my god, first time together back-to-back. How are you doing today, Jacques? I'm doing pretty good. I have a lot to do. I am moving in one and a half days, basically tomorrow. Yes. And I have not packed the most, not a box, but I have a lot of faith in pulling through. I always packed the day before, so couldn't fail me now.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Yeah, what's the worst that could happen uh you know getting a whole apartment together in 24 hours and putting it in boxes it's been done before you can do it again i've done it three times yeah see easy peasy i only needed an hour to pack from uh when i moved to saint paul only needed an hour okay well getting everything together into your bindle and making sure you have a you know you're brushed up on your uh you know hobo symbols or whatever yeah i got my little uh what do you call it my bandana with the stick behind me can of beans in one hand, Thunderbird in the other. A toe sticking out of your shoe. Exactly. One big toe that's red. So today we're going to be bringing you our pseudo-movie soundtracks.
Starting point is 00:01:37 We've broken down our themes, our little progress throughout the movie, pivotal movie points. Yes, we've looked through both of our extensive collections and we found, let's see, six tracks each, Jacques, does that sound fair? Six tracks of the best stuff for each? That was it? Oh, yes. So you guys are in for a goddamn treat um we're gonna start off with uh you know a good intro track from each then you know a nice you know going through the motion of the story the hero's journey um you know going to the great beyond and back again this took me back to high school in the worst way trying to write the rubric for this movie theme. For the hero's journey. God.
Starting point is 00:02:27 I was like, ugh, not again. Well, I had a good high school English teacher, but I was a terrible high school English student. So consider this a makeup assignment, people. We are going to take off in a few seconds. Jacques, any parting words before we start our first track? Jock, any parting words before we start our first track? So we have Miro Miro, the classic Italo disco band, playing their 1982 hit Do Androids Dream,
Starting point is 00:02:55 named, obviously, after the Philip K. Dick novel. It's just bright, it's cheerful, and it just sets you up for the beginning of a story. Can't get enough. Thank you. Thank you. So So this is Kalinga T'ilayn by the orchestra Baobab out of Senegal. This was released in the early 70s, back in the time when Senegal kind of had its own very idiosyncratic mixture, right, of African and indigenous African and indigenous african and uh cuban rhythms that were brought over by sailors in the 50s wow very vibrant uh cuban soul music scene uh going on and i think this track kind of uh is a perfect emblem of that it's also you know very nice and uplifting and very groovy i really really like it i would watch this
Starting point is 00:06:26 definitely i'd stick around for this movie if this was like the oh yeah track i mean there's not a lot to say about it it's just you know it's just good very swaggery instrumental you know walk and talk uh type of uh yeah talk and walk type of shot you know we're establishing the protagonist's way of life we're meeting the side characters you get the overview of the setting you see yes all of that but up next we have
Starting point is 00:06:57 one of yours right Jack? I believe so yes this is one of my favorite songs too like when I was 16, 17 i i could not imagine a world in which orange juice did not exist oh i just am so late to the party laughing and falling blue boy lean period i mean all these songs just have this like vibrant like oh but rip it up i mean there's nothing more joyful it's just banging there's the yeah i can't describe the noises collins has this
Starting point is 00:07:33 has this excellent you know like very deep but the very caring voice it's like uh morrissey kind of had that at the very beginning you know very vulnerable affect to his voice and his recording. Before he became a total loser. I mean, he was a total loser at the very beginning too, but people liked him for it. And now he's still a total loser, but people realize, okay, this shtick got old and kicked Morrissey to the curb.
Starting point is 00:08:05 But yeah, no,, people realize, OK, this shtick got old and kicked Morrissey to the curb. But yeah, no, Edwin Collins is the vocalist for for Orange Juice is such a such a cool guy. When I first saw you Something stood within me You were standing Seltzy in the rain If I could have held you I would have held you Rip it up and start again Rip it up and start again
Starting point is 00:08:56 Rip it up and start again I hope to God you're not as loud as you make out I hope to God. to go and when I next saw you my heart reached out for you my arms stuck like glue to my sides if I could have
Starting point is 00:09:41 held you I would have held you, I would have held you. It's no problem, swallow my pride. Rip it up and start again. Rip it up and start again. I hope to God you're not as down as you may come. I hope to God. I hope to God. orange juice as well like one of the most uh well-known scottish bands from the 80s i think uh you know that's not a hot take i don't think i mean no not at all about orange juice i mean again
Starting point is 00:10:46 i'm late i'm just picking all of this up they all they're hot looking too oh absolutely you have uh edwin collins zeke manika uh the the drummer at the time uh let's see uh some mcdonald guy i think who was the uh who was the guitarist who also has a really, really good LP out. I'll remember the name. I'm going to need this whole thing. Oh my god. Super, super good. Man, I don't know. I ran through this shit when I was a teenager.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Did all the research. What's the second song on the soundtrack that you've... I ain't done this in high school. I don't know what's your problem. I wish I could have a cigarette right now. I need that. Uh, so the next one is, is Now That I Have You by, uh, Tommy McGee.
Starting point is 00:11:35 This is kind of an unknown, or it was an unknown track. It, it was very under the radar when it came out in the early 80s, uh, late 70s. This epic five minute disco track. I don't think we're going to play all of it. Yeah, late 70s. This epic five-minute disco track. I don't think we're going to play all of it. Yeah, slap that on. Excuse me. Throw that Hot Mama on in a second. It's so good.
Starting point is 00:11:52 I'm thirsty for it. It's one of those tracks where it feels like if you come into it with a half-pill-a-moly, like micro-dose or a candy flip, just the very beginning is just so central i mean this sounds makes you feel like you're gonna nut immediately i just want to have a nice single neat whiskey and just yes or on the rocks rocks. I'm gonna hold on and let my love grow strong Your expression left a breath of life Brighter than a shining light
Starting point is 00:12:56 Like heaven, heaven, oh my delight You're the sweetest girl I ever knew And you give my life something new, girl There's someone for everybody Darling, my someone is loving you. My song, my melody, I'm so glad you belong to me. Now that I have you, I'm gonna hold on and let my love grow strong. Now that I have you, I'm gonna hold on and let my love grow strong You make passion after love
Starting point is 00:14:12 Brighter than a shining light Like hope in heaven Oh, my delight You're the sweetest girl I ever knew And you give my life something new There's someone for everybody Darling, my soul is longing you. Now that I have you.
Starting point is 00:14:55 I want to hold on and let my love grow strong. Now that I have you I'm gonna hold on And let my love go strong Now that I have you Girl I'm to hold on and let my love grow strong. Sugar, sugar.
Starting point is 00:16:11 I love this song so much. Sugar You know, like not even like bell-bottom jeans, but just like a nice set of bootcut pants, a collarless shirt, and a big, fat, nasty fur. Like one of those synthetic ones. Like the one I own. Like the one you own, yeah. Like something real trashy. Like you're going out to the neighborhood joint, you find yourself a very hot date, and this is the song you play to get them on the dance floor it's sexy it's smooth yeah it oozes oozes it oozes but not in a nasty way in a really cool way you sound like you're trying to make cum sound cool well i mean it is i mean i did it is i did get in an argument with someone yesterday about how you're not gay you don't like cum oh that's not that's neither here nor soundtrack
Starting point is 00:16:57 that's that's beyond the scope of this conversation but if you want to uh hear more about that uh listen to seeking derangements uh and uh i'm sure we'll talk about that, listen to Seeking Derangements. And I'm sure we'll talk about that eventually. We'll have that roundtable discussion about Nut. Okay. So this next track is unforgettable, undeniable, pain, change, everything all at once heartbreak yeah we were talking about this earlier and i don't know like i've seen this uh like wendy bernie uh like being posted about her whatever by other record collectors and i just i guess at the time when she was on my radar i wasn't really into this kind of sound like these ballads and stuff.
Starting point is 00:17:47 But now I guess. I mean, this is just like the love pain. Every feeling is so crisp. Scorned lover to the max. Yeah. And I'll have to say I did plug this song because I am moving away tomorrow. Yes, she is moving away. Go check out this After Laughter Comes Tears by Wendy Rene.
Starting point is 00:18:14 I mean, every song on it is just a classic. I'm moving away Away Yeah Lover, I think you should know That the girl next door Won't live there no more She's moving away And that's good Oh yes it is
Starting point is 00:19:04 She'll be gone to space Then I'll have you, whoa, yeah Now you'll cry for a while Cause I think you love her But with all of my little strength I bet you won't think of her She's moving away Oh, what news, mighty good news She'll be gone to stay
Starting point is 00:19:46 Then I'll have you, whoa-oh, now I wish the moving van would hurry And take, take that old girl from here Oh, it gets so late, too early And the looking time is almost near. Whoa, oh. Then I'll be all that you have left. And then you'll have me all to yourself.
Starting point is 00:20:46 You'll have me all to yourself She's moving away What news? I declare that to him She'll be gone to stay Again I'll have you Away Away Away Away
Starting point is 00:21:15 Away Away Away Away Away Away Away Away
Starting point is 00:21:23 Away Away Away Away Away Away I want my man Yeah, yeah My man My man Save me Save me Somebody Save me
Starting point is 00:21:42 I'm crawling around in a cloud Save me, somebody. Save me, save me. Save me. I'm crawling around and oh, I can't get off the ground. Oh, no. Help me now. I've tried so hard to rid myself of this pain deep inside of me. But every time I pull myself to my feet, something pulls me back down to my knees. I've tried my best, I really did, to help myself. I really did, but I need some help I need help I need somebody's help
Starting point is 00:22:36 So won't you save me? Somebody save me I'm crawling around Can't get off the ground Oh no Help me now I've tried my best, I really did To rid myself of this misery But I need some help I need help I need somebody's help
Starting point is 00:23:34 Somebody's help So won't you Save me Save me you Save me Save me Somebody Save me Save me I'm calling around
Starting point is 00:23:52 All right. This is my favorite song you chose for this. Oh, it's so sweet. I love it. I love it. I mean, it's very rare. It was on this really tiny New York label. This is Ray Alexander's technique, Let's Talk.
Starting point is 00:24:09 What a terrific sound. It feels like you're just out there on your inner tube, just chilling. It is very tubing. It's very tubing. It's very, you know, like you're sitting out in the backyard uh on your recliner chair with your sunglasses on and a fat you know a roach on on its clip in your hand you're just chilling lemonade you're drinking lemonade lemonade have you ever had one of those no i i'm kind of scared of the mango
Starting point is 00:24:45 micheladas too that's a little bit too oh no no i don't touch those no i mean i i call it a michelada because technically that's what it is but it's just it's a german drink it's called a radler and it's just uh yeah one part lemonade one part uh you know beer i thought you were saying oh no i'm totally familiar i thought you were saying... No, I'm totally familiar. I thought you were saying like, okay, it's a michelada. You just add lemonade to it. I'm like... Oh, no. Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:25:14 I was like, sweet. Oh, no, I'm not trying to crack an egg into my beer or whatever. I feel like I've been tricked. Tomato juice and oysters. Tomato. This song doesn't make me feel like I've been tricked. Tomato juice, an oysters, tomato. This song doesn't make me feel like I've been tricked, but if you served me a lemonade gelato,
Starting point is 00:25:31 I'd feel immediately tricked. Oh no, that's a tier one betrayal right there. No more friendship after that. If I'm ordering that drink, it's to impress you because I have a crush on you. I would never order that in a normal situation. Look how many ingredients this has.
Starting point is 00:25:47 This costs $20. Trying to pick someone up with a bloody Mary with a hamburger on top. Have you ever seen those? No. Oh my God. Even for me, that sounds fucked up. I mean, it's just insane. Like, some people just pay to buy literally anything.
Starting point is 00:26:10 They drink literally whatever. Oh, I know. They're like, excuse me, I need another artisanal gin cocktail with basil. Screw that. Yeah, I know. I'm over artisanal cocktails. Anyone? Yeah. No, no cocktails anyone yeah no no no no uh that's that's all by the wayside just be normal and drink a fucking bottle of jim beam oh my god on its own warm yeah like god intended but drink a bottle of tequila uh from the bottle within the hour
Starting point is 00:26:41 all right jock so what's this what's this next track let's see uh oh my god wardah your classic staple and i want to say maybe just arabic music jock is jock is we're both waffling here because we can't read the label. It's all in Arabic. Is this Egyptian? I don't think it's Egyptian. Either way, it's funky fresh. Certified fresh.
Starting point is 00:27:17 100%. It is funky fresh. I used to not like belly dancing music. There's a couple of good belly dance LPs floating around out there like You know like if you have something with a good guitar or whatever It's the crazy synth in the background of the song that really drives the entire mood. Oh yeah, just little light notes that just kind of
Starting point is 00:27:44 Turn you on exactly how to feel I love you. I missed my eyes and I thought of what was I missed my eyes and I thought of what was And you returned me, my love, for days that time has given I returned to you, here among you, to sing to you And you missed me, and you missed me, and you missed me, and you missed me And you missed me miss you You made me miss the time Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome to the show of love Welcome
Starting point is 00:29:14 Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome to the life I have Welcome You made us miss you, you lit our way And you made love, you've always been with us And you've eaten us, you've eaten us You've eaten us, you've eaten us © transcript Emily Beynon so Waxashtouni, balko zaman, waxashtouni Waxashtouni, walesa hati waxashtouni kaman, kaman Oh yeah, this sounds a lot like, I don't know a lot about Egyptian and Arab music per se, but this sounds a lot like another Egyptian queen,
Starting point is 00:31:11 Om Kulthum, who's really good. I'm sure people have heard of her. If we have any Arab listeners right now, I'm certain, you know, if they haven't heard of her, then they should ask their mother or their grandmother about her. Yeah, I feel like water's favored by everyone's grandmother this is definitely like a mom yes it's like one of those one of those uh like grandparent artists i mean not this one in particular but like every culture i guess has like their sort of this is what grandma likes you know and for me like for me it
Starting point is 00:31:46 was like uh kumbia or whatever and for a lot of egyptians i guess it's it's this like this sort of uh like ballad-esque um you know incredibly soulful oh it's like earth shattering her oh yeah the blood runs deep for this heartbreak Where is my love? Samba Where is my love? Samba Where is my love? Samba Where is my love?
Starting point is 00:32:55 Samba Samba Continue to ask Where is my love? Because I don't know if it was samba Or to get someone else Where is my love? Samba Where is my love?
Starting point is 00:33:22 Samba No. Thank you. Where is my love? Samba Where is my love? Samba Samba No. 1 Samba and do Ondi and mewamo Samba and do Alright, so this guy This is Ondi and mewamo
Starting point is 00:35:02 By Orlan Divo This guy is insane. He was big in the Boston over years in Brazil and then kind of like faded into obscurity you know, closer to the 70s. Moved to France, out of nowhere put out this incredible
Starting point is 00:35:18 LP in the middle of the 70s and then disappeared again. I guess he did a few live shows and then, you know, fucked off for good. This sounds like liquid Velvet Ecstasy. Yeah, no, I mean, I love this track, if only because of the entire album. It sounds like it was made with a very particular
Starting point is 00:35:36 sound in mind. I really respect that. It's very adventurous. A desired composition. Yes. A lot of the album, like this one in particular, is an older track. He recorded this as well in the 60s when he was in the Bossa Nova style. And I mean, it sounds like a Muzak track in a good way. You know, it has a very poppy sound and everything.
Starting point is 00:36:00 It sounds cool. We're getting closer to the climax of the mix here uh jacques what's the song called so this is jam cities how to relate to the body the 12 inch mix um i mean the album that this is off of is called classical club it just has the sound of classic house. It's just like simple, rhythmic, just... Yeah, I can feel it, man. I can feel the repressed trauma of, you know, shitting in a porta potty in 85 degree weather at night. Gone off my tits, off dodgy powders and such.
Starting point is 00:36:49 It's good. Yeah, yeah i mean it's just when it when it kicks off i mean it's just like oh it's a victory it's a victory you immediately hear it and you're like wow things have gotten better you yeah it sounds like you're at the pearly gates when it you know when the setting stage finally opens up and the beat really starts dropping. It's also a similar feeling of when the waiter finally brings the food. All right, all right. Let's not get too pornographic here. Thank you. I'm going to go I can do it. I'm not sure if I can do it. I'm not sure if I can do it.
Starting point is 00:38:26 I'm not sure if I can do it. I'm not sure if I can do it. I'm not sure if I can do it. I'm not sure if I can do it. I'm not sure if I can do it. I'm not sure if I can do it. I'm not sure if I can do it. I'm not sure if I can do it.
Starting point is 00:38:42 I'm not sure if I can do it. I'm not sure if I can do it. I'm not sure if I can do it. Bye. I'm going to go to the bathroom. Thank you. I'm going to go to the bathroom. Thank you. guitar solo Girl, it's not your smile I'm sure That makes me love you More, more, more It's not the way You look at me Oh, no, baby
Starting point is 00:42:01 It just couldn't be Well, well, well, well, I knew, I knew I knew at the moment baby It's not your kiss, not your smile Driven me wild, it's everything about you baby I love, I love, oh I love, I love, I love, I love, I love It's not your sweet, sexy talk It's not the cool, cool way you walk
Starting point is 00:42:36 It's not the way you hold me tight Oh, when you're with the baby, everything's alright Well, well, well, I knew, I knew I love you, baby I love, I love, I love I love, I love, I love I love, I love, I love You know I need you, baby You know I want you, sugar You know I love you, honey Got to have you, can't live without you, call me It's every little thing
Starting point is 00:43:24 Well, well, well, well It's every little thing. Well. All about you, baby. Well, well, well, well. It's every little thing. Every little thing. All about you, baby. Well. Ooh, sugar. Ooh, mama.
Starting point is 00:43:35 Ooh. Sugar. Oh, my angel face. My cupcake. Cupcake. Ooh cupcake, cupcake. Sweetness. Oh, my lovely one. My sweetheart.
Starting point is 00:43:55 In love we're gonna stay. In love we're gonna stay It's not your kiss, not your smile Driving me wild It's everything about you, baby I love, I love, I love, I love I love, I love, I love I love, I love, I love, I love I need you, baby All right. That's The Pretenders.
Starting point is 00:44:49 It's everything about you. Not the New Wave band. That's what I thought when I originally read that. And I was like, oh. I was really excited. I love The Pretenders. Oh, no, no, no. No, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:45:01 Not me. My parents really like New Wave. I think I had my fill like throughout my childhood yeah no um this is much better than the pretenders honestly no i mean obviously this is a a million times better than the regular pretenders but i mean i got a soft five for them yeah uh i first found this this track a Family Groove Records reissue. It's really, really good. That, you know, like lo-fi, kind of like, you know,
Starting point is 00:45:33 it sounds like it was recorded straight to cassette. You know, that feeling is so good. I love it. It's crunchy. Yes, I love a nice crunchy disco track. Really can't be beat. Also, the vocals just have this crazy effect on them just from the game oh yeah yeah i mean it sounds like they're clipping and
Starting point is 00:45:53 like they just like turned every single knob up up to 11 in the studio and that's how i record every time of course i mean i know i have to produce everything for Seeking Derangement. Is that to rescue your audio every time? Oh, my God. Well, if you're just tuning in, I've just been canceled yet again. If you've just tuned in, we are listening to a movie soundtrack. Isn't that right? We're almost at the end of the movie. This is pseudo movie soundtrack we have our intro we have our bright beautiful happy no problems then the problems come and then you get sad and then resolution we're we're at and now
Starting point is 00:46:41 we're back we're back at the beginning we're you know the beginning. Let's roll the credits with a little tune called Time by this very, very obscure, I guess, disco songstress from Britain. This is Rajan's Time. Time is the master But time can bring disaster If you don't care Watch what you're doing with time Time For hard times
Starting point is 00:47:37 We've been brought on Hard times Both you and me Ain't got no money For the spending spree Come out in the cold, girl Actors at the door Want some, get some, find some, make some Everybody needs some money I'm out. You didn't catch me in time
Starting point is 00:48:28 Time, time, time, time, time Freshest time Time, time, time, time, time Freshest time Time, time, time, time, time Freshers' time Keep away from the empty situation Between all the brand new frustration We're in time Freshers' time
Starting point is 00:49:15 Time is a master, and time can bring disaster Watch what you're doing with time Time, time, time, time, time, time Precious time just is I'm so excited to be here tonight. To everything that I see. I can find, for for every purpose under the heaven A time to be born And a time to die A time to weep
Starting point is 00:50:23 And a time to laugh A time to mourn And a time to dance A time to embrace And a time to refrain from embracing No time for hate A time to move No time to walk A time to dance
Starting point is 00:51:02 A time to keep silence And a time to speak We need to know Every last word We need to know Every last word I this okay I changed my mind this was actually my favorite thing you put on the soundtrack isn't it so good it goes insane yeah you you are still in your fur from uh that you were wearing back in the Tommy McGee song and you're going out of the town going to the other bar because you just closed this one they just kicked you out for uh for you know also crazy crazy vocal effects i don't know how to describe
Starting point is 00:52:08 that weird voice box oh yeah yeah like this is all vocoder uh effects and everything yeah it's so good i mean we consider that this was made in in 84 like it sounds like it sounds older like a daft punk version you know or or like a very modern production. Oh, totally. You know, for a very 80s sound. I like it a lot. It's kooky. It's wacky.
Starting point is 00:52:36 So what was the other track that we listened to here? Okay. MD, The Romance of the telescope, orchestral maneuvers in the dark with their last song on the album, architecture and morality romance in the telescope. See these arms That were broken How they held you so Never once Did they fail I love you. We're just waiting Looking skyward
Starting point is 00:53:54 As the days come by Someone promised That we'd answer Someone promised that he answers if we stayed around Over decades Now this romance Has sustained us all Never questioned Only given What it made us for Thank you. I mean, it's just like the conclusion of all of my feelings.
Starting point is 00:56:14 All year. At once. Yes. If Rajan was the credits music, this is the post-credits, you know, soundtrack. People are walking out of the theater. They just watched a great movie. It's a great soundtrack. They have a great feeling.
Starting point is 00:56:31 Yep. And all that's left now is get back in your car. Finish your fountain drink and go home. Finish your triple XL Diet Dr. Pepper and your massive, massive bag of extra butter popcorn. I love that part. And, you know, you leave the sticky floors of the theater room, the projection room. You walk out, light a cigarette, get in your car, drive home. And that, as they say, is that.
Starting point is 00:57:08 That's that, baby. That is that. Well, thank you very much for coming on this journey with me. And thanks, Jacques, for inviting me on. Oh, you're welcome. I've been waiting to go on a journey today since I haven't left my bed. Yes. I mean, especially now, we haven't gotten out of the house
Starting point is 00:57:25 in the past six or so months. We're overdue for a journey, if I say so myself. And namaste to you. And I begin my journey tonight of packing my entire life up one VHS at a time. That's right, folks.
Starting point is 00:57:41 One VHS at a time. Have a nice one. Stay safe. And we'll try to put another one of these out soon, right? that's right folks one VHS at a time have a nice one stay safe and we'll try to put another one of these out soon right yes we're gonna do another one within a week actually wink if you
Starting point is 00:57:56 like this send us a comment seeking derangements at gmail.com subscribe to our patreon TTYL talk to you later love you when we were strangers in the world We both be looking for someone Can't see beyond you now If you can see what I've been through

Starting point is 00:58:44 It's so hard to leave It's so hard to leave When we were standing at the door Knowing we couldn't talk no more I wanted to hold you there But when it turned to say goodbye More than tear was in my eye Don't understand it all So hard to leave So hard to leave
