Starting point is 00:00:00 There are some scenes in this documentary where she is speaking a gibberish language. And the language that she's speaking is Kearney. And the language that she's speaking is Kearney. Hey true crime besties. Welcome back to an all new episode of Serialisly. Hello, hello, hello, and welcome back to an all new episode of Serialistly with me, your host, Annie Elise. And today's Thursday, which usually would mean headline highlights, where I walk you through everything happening this week in true crime. However, I have a very special episode for you today. It's going to be a focus on one particular case slash situation rather than going into all of the different cases that we normally talk about.
Starting point is 00:01:15 I also do not have Amy O'Brien with me today. So I apologize for all of you who are waiting for me to say hello to her. But here, let me break down what we're going to be talking about together today because it's something that has been, I don't know, I've been working on this behind the scenes for quite a few weeks now. It's been very difficult to find someone who speaks this language. And maybe you already know where I'm going with this based on past cases that we've covered, but let me break it down.
Starting point is 00:01:43 when I released my last McKenzie Shirilla episode, I truly believed that we were going to be done with that girl, that we would never talk about her again, we could leave her behind in the dust, and never revisit it. However, there was this like nagging feeling that I just could not shake, and I know a lot of you were wondering, too, why do her and her mom speak in this secret language? Not only in some of the body cam footage that we saw,
Starting point is 00:02:11 but in the jail calls. and it's, you know, a sect off of Pig Latin. It's carny language because her mom grew up in the carnival circuit and taught McKenzie the language. But like, why are they speaking to each other this way? And more importantly, what the hell are they even saying? So while I thought that we were leaving the charilla of it all behind, today we are going to revisit it very briefly. And I think that this will be the last time.
Starting point is 00:02:37 And the reason why is because I was able to track down someone who speaks that language fluently. So you know, my nosy ass had to get in there, decode these calls, translate these calls, and figure out just what the hell they were saying. So what I'm going to do is actually go through all of those old prison calls, clip out the part where they are speaking in this language, and then be joined by someone who speaks the language fluently themselves and translate everything for you. Now before we jump in, I did want to share some exciting news with you guys because it's that time of year. I've already seen the messages start trickling in, but our annual subscription sale is officially here. So if you've been on the fence or you've been thinking about joining our true

Sounds pretty good, right? So, go sign up. It's ending soon. You're welcome. Now, after listening to over 100 jail calls between McKenzie and her friends and her mom and, you know, all of the people, two things really stuck out to me. One, McKenzie is always irritated, just always on 99 level of like spoiled brat mode. And two, when McKenzie talks with her mom, she does almost every single time start talking in code. God, another girl just got moved on our pod. She looks slow as folks.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Well, she may be distraught. No, she looks retarded. But please call visitation and see if you can get our video calls to move to the other terminal. Oh, yeah, video call and commissary. Girl, now she's banging out the door, like, girl, you just got here. who just got here shut the fuck up how old is she
Starting point is 00:05:49 I don't know probably old as fuck like everyone else in here oh my god see so we didn't need to be the excuse me I was like asking her like I was like why are you in here
Starting point is 00:06:01 she's like oh I do crack I'm like what she's like yeah she don't look like it at all oh my gosh Kese after court when we were sitting there waiting a guy came out with his
Starting point is 00:06:12 client right the lawyer came out with his client right the lawyer came out with his client and he goes man you just did me 30 you know what you were doing you just did me 30 and he goes I just saved your life like I literally just saved your life right and he goes you know what you did I don't even want to get into it and his lawyer was like well you can't you can't smoke crack you can't sell crack and he's like you don't care you don't know me and you don't consider that I said as fuck yes I was like you don't look like you do that at all like you she's pretty
Starting point is 00:06:43 as fuck. Like, she doesn't look like it. Maybe they got her early. And you know what I found out? Hmm. But I'm about to see. Oh. Do you know, like, cocaine is crack?
Starting point is 00:06:57 I didn't know that. Crack cocaine? I didn't know that, though. I thought it was. So people are snorting crack? Yes. So I'm a... What?
Starting point is 00:07:10 That means dumb. Didn't crack before. Oh, I don't like that. I always was like I would never do crack. I never did crack. No. That's crazy. I don't like that. That is crazy. But like it's like you have to smoke it like in a pipe for it to be cracked.
Starting point is 00:07:28 Yeah, I know. Right. But like why? What's the difference? Why is it a different name if it is what it is? Because it's like hard and soft apparently. I was asking her about it and then she told me like she like burnt like she had a hole in her nose because of it. Noording too much. Oh my God. here. What the hell? She's pretty as fuck, though.
Starting point is 00:07:53 She's like 43 or something like that. She's so pretty. Like, I like her. Oh, I hope she gets saved. So like I said, the language that they're speaking is called Carney. And I'm not saying that to be disrespectful or anything like that because I have seen a lot of people say that it's Pig Latin, it's this and that. It's a version of that.
Starting point is 00:08:09 But technically, it is called the Carney language, which is short for Carnival. So first what I did is I checked the case files to see if any of the investigators had any of these calls translated. But all I could find was a single photo. So then I scoured the internet, started making some calls, talking to, you know, carnival workers, Irish travelers. I don't want to say the G word, but maybe you know what I'm talking about. And when I started looking into it further, I did come across a couple of social media
Starting point is 00:08:39 posts that suggested that McKenzie and her family were part of the gypsy culture. Now, is that totally politically political? politically correct. Maybe not. I've had mixed things slide in my DM, but I'm just relaying to you what it is being called out there. So if there's a better term I can use, absolutely. Feel free to educate me on that. But I went back into the files, and I want you to listen to this clip that I found. I'm irritated that my messages aren't working. So what was she saying about a gypsy? Oh, she was, so you know that show on TLC where like they wear the big ass dresses and like you have to get married by like 15 and shit like she thought
Starting point is 00:09:20 who was that oh my goodness and i was like no we're like the we're like the dancing one right yes we're like that like like stevie nix just phone like stevie nix i don't know what that is and i don't think they know what that is either everybody knows stevie nix is like a really famous singer who dresses like a gypsy we're just a theatrical musical type you can say that we're not like the Yeah, because she was like, I could tell. I was like, you know what I'm saying? I was like, oh, no. And then she was like, no.
Starting point is 00:09:51 She was like, no, I just could tell you talking shit. And I was like, I'm dead as fuck. Like GIFT's, musicians, and actors. I mean, I'm sorry, actors, musicians and theater. That's weird. I feel like all GIFTs are just like creative too. Right. Now, I don't know anybody on the planet who personally doesn't know who Stevie Nix is, but that's okay.
Starting point is 00:10:11 So anyway, now that we have connected the dots between the Shirillah's, and the Carney talk. It's time to translate the calls. So like I said, in my quest to find the most accurate Carney translator, I found somebody even better. And her name is Kate Lincoln Goldfinch. Now, Kate is not only fluent in Carney, but she is also an attorney who can help answer some questions that I personally have had about these phone calls. So with that, we are going to get into this interview with Kate. My name's Kate Lincoln, Goldfinch, and I'm actually an immigration lawyer. I'm based in Texas. And for the last 20 years, I have been working with immigrant families in Texas. So I bring families together, keep them together, work on helping people get visas, green card, citizenship.
Starting point is 00:10:57 And then, of course, recently have done a lot of detained work. I have a ton of clients who are in detention, and I file federal lawsuits to get them out. So now that you've met Kate, if you're anything like me, you probably need the answer to one of the hard-hitting questions, which is, how the heck did she even learn to speak Carney? I recently learned that I spoke an actual language called Carney. All I knew for 20 years is that my best friend taught me a language that her mom and her aunt used to speak. And when I was, you know, in my early 20s, she taught me this language and we used it to, you know, talk about things that were private in public.
Starting point is 00:11:40 And over the years, we've just always, we'll revert to this language when we're on. the phone and like our husbands are around there or whatever we just had this secret language and then it came in my attention about a year ago that there's there's actually a carny language that the people who work in carnivals I guess this is how it began develop this language and it's like a it's like a type of pig latin you know which is just add the sound before a vowel and so I learned that I did carny and I did a little video on finding out that I spoke carny. and really didn't think anything of it. And that video started picking up steam
Starting point is 00:12:18 when this documentary came out about McKinsey Sherella. And so people are all of a sudden talking about Carney again because it's what she speaks with her mom in some of her jailhouse calls. So I wanted to pick Kate's brain a little bit about McKenzie's call and figure out why she's choosing to use this secret language with her mom in so many of these jail calls.
Starting point is 00:12:39 And here's what she had to say. McKenzie uses the language in her jailhouse calls is really kind of silly because the way that she uses it is to talk about people who are annoying her. She's talking about people who are, you know, in her like cell block area or she's talking, she talks about a certain guard who really annoys her. And so she's basically gossiping about people and just switching to the language. It's clear that like probably she's just in the habit of switching to the language when she's gossiping about people. She's not discussing anything about her case. She's not revealing any details. I think that would also be rather foolish because it's
Starting point is 00:13:20 so easy to defy for this particular language. But I don't know. I mean, I don't know if she had the expectation that people, that the guards would be listening to these calls, which very much may be the case. I mean, generally every jailhouse phone call is recorded. And who has access to the recordings can really differ, whether it's going to be the investigators or the prosecutors or the guards, you know, that's going to be different at every facility. And so people who are detained, unless they are on a privileged confidential call with a lawyer, which you have to schedule differently, should be under notice that their calls are being recorded and could be listened to by anyone, including the people who are trying to go after them. So now that we have a little bit of
Starting point is 00:14:07 background information, let's jump right into the calls. And I think the easiest way to do this and to follow along is for me to play the clip and then as soon as that clip finishes, we're going to cut back to Kate translating. Oh, bad. Hey. Hold on. Your eyes are so pretty. Yes, pretty is fun.
Starting point is 00:14:26 Hey, my name is fun. Hey, Mom. Hey, so. Um, do you have face on the car? Hey. So. So. You have face in the car?
Starting point is 00:14:39 Uh-huh. Um. Um, hey face. Hold on a second. Go ahead, take again. Kenji, say it again. Hey, Faith. I love you so much.
Starting point is 00:14:54 I tried to draw you a little heart so you all can see that I love y'all, but I couldn't like... We've seen it, don't worry. Okay, good. You all seen it. I'll be there tomorrow, too. All right, I love you guys so much. Like, tell everyone I said I love them and thank them for coming to court. Because you're coming too.
Starting point is 00:15:11 Um, thank you both of them. I need to tell you. I need to tell you. something though. Well, okay. Cizzo, Yuzzo, Yuzzo, these, please, please, so Riza, Nita, Nita, Piza, me, the Iza, Miza, Miza, Miza, Miza, Tizzo, Gwee, Flizor.
Starting point is 00:15:24 Is that where you been? Yiz. Okay, that's what I thought. And I was talking to my buddy, and she said that's probably the best possible place you can be. Anyway, hold on, Mom. She said I only get one call, and I got to go in my room, or I would do.
Starting point is 00:15:41 I would, but let me finish this call, and if you give me another one, I got you. I got you. I got you. I, I guess, I'm, Skiy, Wither, Yida, Yizah, I'm skeezer, me then. Uh-oh. Mizam. I'm Skiyzer, this is Fizzo.
Starting point is 00:15:57 This is Giza, Kizzo, Meeze, Wiza, Wither, Tizzo, Tizzo, Wither, Wither, Tizzo, Wiede, Witt, Witt, Witt, Witt, Witt, Witt. Witt, Bid, I, and, he, Jiz, Jiz, Kizu. Okay, okay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:16:14 Yizam Skiy, Jizu Mizi, Tizu Mizi, Jizu, Mizi, Please or. Honey, I can't make it, you're an adult. I can't be a... You do P-Zan. Fiji, C-ZA, V-ZE-P-Z-E-O-P-Z-E-O-P-ZE-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-OPS. I'll try.
Starting point is 00:16:28 I did, I did. You do key-O. Okay. You do He-D-E-E-E-W-D-E. All right. Okay. But they say, that's okay, because that's where you'll have access to mental health. It's on that floor.
Starting point is 00:16:41 I mean, like, you know, you know, that's a therapist. I was a duvenile facility. I was a duvenile facility. I'm Quincy? Mm-hmm. Yeah. I just came here the other day. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:16:57 What, uh, what'd you say, Mom? Guess who called me for you? Who called? C-C. No way. She did. Oh, hell, no, I hope not. What did she say?
Starting point is 00:17:09 I miss her. Everybody's thinking about you and shrewing up and stay strong. Yeah. What did you say to her? My phone number. I just said, oh my God, you're so sweet. I love you so much for this. That's so nice.
Starting point is 00:17:23 And she goes, yep, I got to go. You just tell her that everybody's thinking about her and it's safe strong and we love her. Oh. She said, so you need to call this place right now because they put me on the psych ward floor. Not the most damning translation, obviously, but still, is it just that they spoke in this language so regularly that it just comes out that way? Sometimes when people even speak foreign languages, sometimes, you know, sometimes, you know, know, what's that term like Spanglish, when it goes from English to Spanish, and it's just easy, possibly. Here's the next clip. Starting something new is exciting, but also terrifying.
Starting point is 00:18:04 Now, when I first left my corporate job and decided to build this business full time, I remember constantly wondering, what if this doesn't work, what if nobody listens, what if I take this huge leap and completely fall on my face? Now, obviously, I'm very glad that I didn't listen to that fear. But one thing that I've learned is that building a business is so much easier when you have the right tools supporting you. And that's one reason that Shopify has become the commerce platform behind millions of businesses around the world and 10% of all e-commerce in the U.S. Whether you're launching something brand new or scaling an existing brand, Shopify gives you the tools to do it all in one place. Do you need help creating a beautiful storefront? Shopify has
Starting point is 00:18:41 hundreds of ready-to-use templates. Do you need help marketing? They make it easy to create email and social campaigns. Need help managing inventory, payments, analytics, or customer orders? It's all built right in. That's the reason I trust them to not only power my website, but also my merch store. And what I love is that Shopify is constantly evolving. They have AI tools that can help write product descriptions, generate content, even improve product photography. Saving business owners, a lot of their time where it matters the most.

Starting point is 00:22:05 But do not... Don't. She's our staff all fucking day. Okay, then just wait until tomorrow. Okay, well, you're going to call again. And you really need to set up video visitation, like right now. Honey, it's pending. I can't. I can't even get in there yet. What's pending?
Starting point is 00:22:22 My login and stuff. You don't have any video calls yet, right? No, but this one other girl has two, and I'm looking at them, and I want a video call. I know. You do. We have to wait. It's pending. Okay? It takes a little time to set stuff out. Okay? But leave the polite thing alone. All right. I'm really annoyed, so please call again. I will. But you got to just chill.
Starting point is 00:22:45 Okay. Yeah, I am, but like, oh, and I found cotton swabs. I made a little order for myself, like, cotton swabs. I did, um, underwear. Good. I did, like, the salted peanuts. I did two pickles. Some more shabangs, because I like them.
Starting point is 00:23:05 Good. And I just let you, like, do everything else. You can just take everything. But I already, I got rid of my pen, like all the stuff that we kind of both added. All right. Okay. Well, let me, I'm on a phone call right now. So let's, call me again, you know, in a little bit.
Starting point is 00:23:24 Call the line. Because I don't want to blow my whole hour first thing in the morning. I know. I'm saying, keys all these a weas already isn't. Please. I will, I'll follow up. Like, right after I get off the phone with you. I will, I will follow up. I have daddy go do it in person, okay?
Starting point is 00:23:36 All right, please do it. I don't want to, I don't have an hour to talk to you. All right. I love you so much, Mom. I love you, too, ma'am. I love you, bye, bye. Bye. Bye, I love you.
Starting point is 00:23:45 Bye, I love you. The caller has hung up. I'm so mad right now. This bitch, she pisses me the fuck off. I asked her for the form and she was like, you are not getting one. You are not. You're not getting a form. I don't give a fuck.
Starting point is 00:24:14 I don't care if your mom talked to the sheriff or what. You are not getting one. I'm not giving you the form. Here, she obviously sounded a little more aggressive. Maybe she's trying to mask that she feels entitled, brady, angry, I don't know, all of the above, but definitely seems more irritated. Let's roll into the next one. You're weirded out by all your messages?
Starting point is 00:24:41 Yeah, well, so weird the men. Yeah, that's weird. Cynthia and Ms. Kent are going to come and visit you as soon as they can't. Really? So he wanted me to tell you. Yep. And she said, you tell my little sugarboga. I know she did not do what everybody is saying.
Starting point is 00:25:01 She said, I got to meet the real, I got to meet her. I know who she is. Oh my God. Do you hear her like fucking gagging and throwing up? And tell me somebody I said I love her. Why is she doing it? She just been fucking gagging all day. Stop.
Starting point is 00:25:20 This bitch. Is that you saying that? I heard you. Did you hear me? She's blowing me. Like, imagine being in the. room next to that like you're like like shut up been begging on the wall yes I'm like I'm like shut up

Starting point is 00:26:11 when you're ready to call me. Hold on. I got to write that shit down. Yep. Why are you not messaging me? Mom, I go in order. Okay. Because I have hell of shit in my bra. We never get searched here, too, which kind of weirds me to fuck out, because I'm used to getting searched.
Starting point is 00:26:39 That is kind of weird. Yeah. I just want Monday to do. I just want Monday to come and go so we can move on, like, let's go. Yes, me too. Right. She said, do you want me to send you the old letters or wait? Either way, I'll hold on to them if you want to wait.
Starting point is 00:27:03 I'm very sorry for going through what you're going through. I know you're probably scared and that is normal. I was too not knowing what was ahead for me going to do. I promise I'll be here for you. I'm glad I got to meet your family. They made me so comfortable around them. More than my family does the two times I've been around them since my son passed. I'm going to take your mom later and ask her to ask your lawyer if I can write you a character letter.
Starting point is 00:27:23 I love it, miss you, girl. Keep your head up and stay strong. She said she's like American horror story. So once again, not the kindest remarks, but not necessarily like she's trying to speak in code to cover something up or to quiet some of the information about the case or possibly even lie about something. It's more almost as though she's trying to mask
Starting point is 00:27:51 what I believe to be her true personality, which is like entitled bitch through. and through. Let me play the next one. Diamond gave me, like, all her shit, like, when I left, and her deodorant and shit. Oh, good. A hamburger. Because you're eating. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:28:11 She should talk, though. Not that I did. I could have gone up on the way home. But what else did you give you? What do you mean? Oh, hella noodles juice. What? Yeah, I have noodles juice.
Starting point is 00:28:25 I have, like, Helicom right now. Hell and noodle juice? Hell and noodles. Hell and noodles. A lot of noodles and juice. Okay. I thought that was like the name of the juice. Oh.
Starting point is 00:28:37 Oh. Good. That's good. She's easy. Wea, Tizu, we ask me to eat, and giza, whizzi, does she have a problem with him?
Starting point is 00:28:49 What do you mean? Like mental. Diza. She's or, Eza, she's or, EZ, whiz or, she's, like, Sez and teasing,
Starting point is 00:28:57 Riza, Tezing, Riza, Tezing, Reza, Tezing, It's like, Fisa, Fizi, Ezer, Seizing. Ezo, like, Feesor-D-E-R-E-E-Z-E-E-Z-E-A-E-E-N-E-E-E-E-V-E-E-E-E-E-V-E-E-E-E-V-E-E-E-V-E-E-E-E-E-V-E-E-E-E-V-E-E-E-E-E-E-V-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-Z-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-L-E-E-E-A-E-E-E-D-A-... Yeah, I'm just... Issa Rizam, Chizam, Chizam, Chizam, Dizam, Dizzo, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza, Giza,
Starting point is 00:29:45 and it's not even up to you anyway. So it was the person you're on the phone with. Oh, and make sure Sammy's blocked on all my social media, please. I did. You're not with her anyway. No, she's not even on there. Well, on Snapchat and stuff and TikTok? Oh, that I got to check.
Starting point is 00:29:59 She's definitely on Snapchat. You need to block her on Snapchat. Okay. Because that's weirdest folk. And make sure everyone... What? You just need to make, like, a list of people that, like, need to be, like, washed and blocked, like, that are, like, weird as fuck. And, like, if any of my friends that are supposedly, like, ride or die for kids are with them.
Starting point is 00:30:21 Mm-hmm. That's true. What? What did Danny get from the ice cream truck, an ice cream sandwich? You got it. That's so silly. Oh, what are they texting? Me's his birthday tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:30:44 And then Daddy's not here, so they're actually going to come over Friday. But they have one last day. But they love you so much. And they're with you until the end, all, every day and every day. I have weird feelings about them right now, but I'm gonna call you back again if I can. Are you still working? Well, can we try and do our 7.30? What time is it?
Starting point is 00:31:06 724. Oh. Well, call me again, and then we'll just hang up and try and do our 730. Oh, no, it says this terminal will be stopped in one minute. Please finish your use. So I'm about to get on and see if I can get on the call with you. Okay, I'm gonna do it too. She says she's talking about her age.
Starting point is 00:31:23 She's 50 or she's 40. She has her whole butt out every day. She thinks I'm talking about that. Every time she comes over here, she thinks I'm talking about something important. I know. I will have some of that one again. Something about, okay, this gal is coming over, wants to know what she's talking about, and she's saying something like, I got you. I mean, the sense I'm getting is that this is like someone in her cell block that's
Starting point is 00:32:32 that acts very bizarre and is coming over and is asking McKenzie for something. the phone. Let me listen to this whole on social media. How are noodle juice? I want noodle. Oh, good. Good. Good.
Starting point is 00:33:03 Did it be good. We're looking at least in use and we're lucky the news all we're still always doing. Is there a father? What do you mean? But it's mental. She's her shoes. She's off.
Starting point is 00:33:14 She's amazing. She's amazing. She's like she's like she's in freezing. She's in, she's on facing. Okay. You know, he's already. Okay. This is about a girl who's walking over to her.
Starting point is 00:33:30 Sleez-Lulia, I think she says, she says she's off. Something she's off or something. She's like 50 or 40. She wears me the first. buck out she's your he's all you know he's not even he's everything her her butt is out and everything he's not really she thinks i need to be every time she comes over here she's like and i didn't kiss the last he's like he's confusing she thinks i'm talking about something important
Starting point is 00:34:16 you know, read that, me, that, treat I, and keep you, a little bit of a kiddry. So, you know, we're talking about, I've got you, and I'm like, no. So the first time you're on the phone. I'm sorry. I think that's it. I think that. Yeah, I think that.
Starting point is 00:34:31 So there you heard another clip. Now, again, these aren't, like, damning things where they were speaking in code and trying to talk about the case or dropping a bombshell relating to the case. But still, I was curious enough about this, I know many of you have been as well. You've been DMing me. I've seen it on social media. So because I love you guys and I'm your true crime bestie, I had to go the extra mile, get these calls translated and let you know what the heck she was saying. And if there's anything else you want me to have translated by Kate, just feel free to let me know. I thought that the jail calls were, you know, that was a good place to start. So let me know what you think. Let me know what you think it means. If it means anything, if she was trying to mask her true personality and that's why she was speaking in code language. or what. But curious to know your thoughts. All right, guys, thank you so much for tuning in to another episode with me today. Until the next one, you know the drill. Thanks, bizar tizzer, tizzen using isn't gizade. Don't fizzar gizet to zo. Lizaikism sus.
Starting point is 00:35:30 Be nice. Don't kill people. And let's be done with McKenzie Shurilla once and for all. All right. Thanks.
