Let's get on to that tale of the tape.
He's an award-winning journalist or maybe podcast host, one of the two.
Yeah, I'm talking about the co-host of the mashup.
You know him as twos.
I'm talking about 222 minutes.
So buckle up.
Here we go.
Fine.
It's just recording.
We're walking around the kitchen.
I'm at twos' place.
He just cooked me an amazing breakfast.
He's an amazing host.
In his 44 years, he's learned a few things, folks.
And if you hadn't heard, it was just his birthday.
Double deuce times two.
That is 2-2-2.
And this wonderful thing with numbers creates 4.
Yeah
So you grabbed the wrong passport
Yeah, so I was just showing twos. Yes, so I got up to the I was checking in my book at my bank
Let's let's rewind a real quick sec here. Okay, how did you end up after unceremoniously vacating the province a couple months ago? How is it you find yourself back here?
Okay, so we're gonna start
You want me to tell you the story
You told me we're sticking this at the end.
No, like us just chatting and shit that it's been going on for the past few minutes.
Okay.
Is this us going?
Is this us going?
Are we starting?
You do this for a living?
Welcome.
Not like this.
Welcome to the Sean Newman podcast.
I'm strolling around Toos's host.
Okay, you can start again.
Ask your question.
Okay.
So I think probably the pertinent thing to lead off with here is how did you find yourself
back in my vicinity after two months of making your way as far from here as possible without a
boat although i guess you did have boats at some point um i just feel like lemony snickett's a series
of unfortunate events is probably the best analogy uh so what happened was okay is
it's a story that kind of weaves in and out and timelines get skewed but I'll start this
this air is Monday so two Mondays ago we're supposed to be driving to get on the ferry so we're
leaving our campground got everything packed up we're driving to Argentia to get on the ferry
and as we're doing that we're in the middle of nowhere in Newfoundland going up a hill
Mm-hmm.
And it starts to slip.
Okay?
The vehicle.
All right.
Not your patience or sanity.
Nope.
No.
And what happens is the transmission goes.
Okay.
And so...
You hit a button and now...
Oh.
It seems to be working now.
I'm...
Okay.
Maybe I'm just...
My voice is picking up on your mic.
That's what's happening.
So I'm going to sit further away.
That way I don't pick up in Jack.
so mad at me. Yes, we're having fun on the road trip.
Yeah. So,
we're going up a hill, it starts to slip.
I look at it and I go, what the heck is that?
Pull over, call Zane,
Zane watched me through a bunch of things.
Transmission's got. And so
it's Monday, we're supposed to be going to a ferry,
and you're sitting there and you're like,
transmission's gone where I'm like thankful we had service
because if it had happened at the bottom of the hill
or like, you don't, like we're in the middle of the first.
You have to climb up the hill.
Mm-hmm.
Would it be catastrophic?
So, get a tow truck comes, they come pick us up, or they come to get us.
Then he realizes there's five of us, and he goes, I can't haul you.
So we sit there and wait with the tow truck driver while they get another vehicle to come get Melon the kids.
Once the other vehicle shows up, we put the truck on the trailer.
They hook up the trailer to the truck, and we start driving, okay?
All right.
So we got a blown transmission.
we're driving.
It's now raining.
I'm raining pretty good.
It's a downpour.
Yeah.
And we get somewhere about four minutes from the next campground.
Mel's got us booked in so we can figure out the vehicle and everything.
And the transmission line on the tow truck goes.
So this is in Newfoundland.
Correct.
Okay.
So you're on your way to go get on top of a ferry.
And while on route, you blow two trannies.
If I say, is that, is that, is that, I'm careful how I answer this.
Is that, is that a fair assessment of what happened?
I feel like I'm on trial right now, folks.
We blew a transmission and then we blew a second transmission on our way to a boat that could be, yes, inferred it.
It is a ferry that has taken us from one island to the other.
To his, yes.
Okay.
So, the tradition in Newfoundland, when outsiders go there.
Okay.
So here's the problem with Newfoundland.
is that they've got the local dialect and the accent's a little bit hard to understand.
But what you were supposed to do was kiss a cod.
Not blow two trannies?
Yeah, which you might have heard them say cod wrong.
You know, when I was on my way here, I'm like, I know that dude is going to try.
You know when you're sitting on, well, actually, I don't know.
But you watch a TV show.
Okay.
And they get to cross-examine the witness.
That's exactly what you're doing right now.
I'm like, I'm going to be very precise in my words.
If I say tranny, you're going to do exactly what you're doing.
Yes.
So we blew two trends.
And then you said tranny.
Yeah.
Multiple times.
You're like, if I say tranny, he's going to make a joke about me blowing it.
Well.
So anyways, there we are near the bottom of the hill, and I'm blowing a tranny.
Well, the nice thing is, I'm not on trial for anything.
So yes, we blow two transmissions.
the owner of the tow truck comes out
he's beside himself
Brad, wonderful guy, wonderful man
he ends up
towing our trailer
to the campground
he's just like
this shouldn't happen
blah blah I'm like man I come from Alberta
my family runs a trucking company
like stuff breaks
stuff breaks you have nothing to apologize for
but he's beside himself
hauls us in
his entire group comes and sets our camper up for us
and now it is officially a downboard
It is just raining a crazy amount.
Okay, so monsoon season in Argentia.
Yep.
Actually, it was a boat.
How close was this to Dildo?
Actually pretty close.
Yeah, it was.
Dildo brewing was very close.
I bet it was very nearly Dildo.
So that night.
So that night at Come by Chance.
Mm-hmm.
Which we did drive-by too.
Regardless.
You gave it a gander?
Okay, let me talk.
Oh, man.
That night was bad, but it ended worse because I ended up slamming Mila's...
I slammed Mila's finger in the door.
Oh, no!
So, like, I mean, when things were going wrong, I just need to sit in a padded room.
Yeah, yeah, you just...
Because you get in your own head and everything just compounded.
Oh man. So it's it's the transmission line or the transmission then the transmission line
Then we finally get there now it's raining like you wouldn't believe and you're just like I don't know what's gonna happen
Then you slam your kids finger in the door and you just you know because because you're just
You're you're you're in a different head space this I don't know I should ask Chuck about this that one episode where you had him on and he was talking about like the the flow of life or I can't remember what he called it
Patterns of life patterns of life yeah
and you just kind of pick up on the way things are going.
Yes, he's talking about enemies, but regardless.
But this is, this is, yeah, I'm fully aware of that.
But this is kind of the same thing where you can see when people are in that headspace
and things start to go wrong.
Like you can, I swear to God, you can sense when a big incident's going to happen
sometimes on a rig.
Like you just feel it building towards it 20 minutes before it happened.
And you're like, oh, that was that gut feeling I had.
Well, when you're in it, you can't see it.
Everything just turns to crap right in front of you.
Yep.
You're just like, I don't even know what's going on right now.
Like, I literally could just take a step back and I'd fall off a cliff.
Like that's, that's even trying to get out of the way, I seem to get more in the way.
It was just a strange day.
So Brad from Newfoundland towing and recovery is watching me.
And at this time, I'd talk to Zane and Brian.
And he's like, I heard over here your conversation.
It sounds like you might have a mechanic coming.
We'll take the vehicle to our shop and you can use our shop.
And I was sitting there going like...
That's awesome.
That's awesome.
But I actually don't even know how to thank you at this point because I just slammed my
kid's finger in the door.
I don't know if I've got to go to the hospital now, right?
Like her finger looked pretty gnarly.
Fast forward.
Her finger's fine.
But at the time, you're just kind of like, I don't know what's happening anymore.
And I'm sure that's how I looked.
Plus it's pouring rain.
So the next day,
of all the bad things that went on a whole bunch of like beautiful things happened one is i wake up to
zane texting me and brian's on a red-eye flight those of you don't know brian southgate he's 73 shout out to
brian he goes drives they're in the middle of driving from sastatoon to calgary they book a flight
on the drive get him to the airport he flies a red eye to st johns now while he's in the air a listener
who I'd missed the text,
Kate, showed out to Kate,
shows up at the campground
because I'd text her saying,
well, we're here.
So she drives like 40 minutes
and comes for a coffee.
While I'm sitting there,
I talk to Zane,
and I look at her and I go,
could you drive me in the St. John's?
Because I got to figure out a vehicle
to pick up Brian with,
and like, we just,
and she said, oh yeah.
So she drives me in the St. Johns.
We pick up a vehicle.
I go pick up Brian.
In an under 24 hours of the transmission blowing,
Brian Southgate is already working on it.
Okay.
And like, so from Alberta to Newfoundland
to,
to, you know.
Saskatoon to Alberta to Newfoundland.
Correct.
And it's hard.
He's got there and he's going to start it the next day.
He's already working on it.
No, he walks in, he starts working on it.
And when he walks in to this shop,
I don't know Brad from a hole in the ground.
This guy who owns Newfoundland's gone.
He's already got it on a hoist.
He goes to Brian, use wherever you need in here.
And they got a full shop of tools, everything.
Yep.
So like, we didn't have to go buy anything.
Really.
I mean, a little bit of this and that, but like overall, like nothing.
The new fee hospitality man.
Is insane.
When I lived in Lloyd, it was like, you'd show up at some random house party.
You know, you'd get invited to some house party.
We're like, where are we going?
Oh, it's my buddy, Patrick.
Because they're always named Patrick or Chris.
Yes.
Right?
Except for the ones I meant.
Well, actually, there was a Chris.
See?
And so anyways.
The guy who picked us up, the first tow truck.
driver was Chris.
Shout up to Chris.
Shout up to all the newbies.
Okay, so anyway, back to Toos talking.
How did you miss me, too?
You want me to go to some random house party?
Like, you want me to go to somebody's house?
I don't even know them.
Oh, that'll be fine.
You'd walk in.
Hey, how's it going?
Oh, hey, I'm Tews.
Oh, here.
You want a beer?
they'd hand you a Coors light
and away you go.
Right?
Like just incredible hospitality
anytime you cross past with them.
So it doesn't surprise me in the least
that you would get something so over the top
when you're there on their home turf.
Well, that's where it starts.
Okay?
I got to make sure I give all these people
the proper ado they get that they deserve.
So we walk in Tuesday, less than 20th.
24 hours after I broke down.
The truck is already on a lift, and Brian walks underneath it and starts going to town.
Yeah.
Pulls the transmission out, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Then I drop Brian off at where he's spent in the night.
I go back to the campsite.
And I wake up the next morning, and I call Brian.
Well, actually, I go pick Brian up because he doesn't have any wheels.
I take him back to the shop because now he has to pull apart the entire transmission and see what's wrong with it.
Yeah.
And I say, how can I help you?
He goes, well, we don't know what's wrong with it, but we know something's wrong with it, so we're going to need parts.
So I drive into St. John's to a place called Mr. Transmission.
And there is a man named Sean Lee there.
Okay.
And by the time I'm there, Brian's giving me a list of like, I have no idea how to pronounce any of these things.
I had no idea what any of them were.
Now I understand what rear planetary is, but at the time, I was like, okay.
And Sean Lee tours me around his shop.
in St. John's and he's like ah we just don't have anything blah but we'll take a look here we'll take a look
we go into the sea can twos and it's just full of odds and ends of transmissions and the very back
is a complete transmission old but a complete transmission and he goes well I mean there's what you
need but I don't know how you're getting out of here and I said well you're telling me I could
take that he's like yeah and that's what we need yeah I'm like you mind if I'm
move like all I'm like I can't do much but heavy lifting and moving things I'll figure it out
so Sean Lee gives me one of his like you know young guys to come help me with a forklift
we pull everything out of the C can get this transmission in the back of the van we'd rented
and I go what do you need for you know you need my license my drop of blood some money
but no no man you're in such troubles right now you just take it and so a guy that I just met
just gave you a free transmission after he got his hired guy to use a four
for probably an hour or two to help you get it out of that sea can.
And then went around his entire shop looking for a special tool that you need to get
certain bolts out of a transmission, drove to his house, came back, so this is the best I can do.
These are the only ones.
And I'm like, you don't need, like, Brian's figured, he's like, I know, but you're trying
to get a transmission working.
He's like, you need this special tool.
So then he gives me four different pieces from his shop to take with me.
And I drive like, you know, the 50 minutes back, right?
I'm like, the level of kindness was insane.
Was insane.
Brian's act and Zane flying there is insane.
Yeah.
Brad from Newfoundland towing and recovery giving me their shop to use and every piece of tool they had in there is insane.
Sean Lee giving me a full on transmission.
And then some.
Yep.
Is insane.
And so we drove back.
This is why I'm not only going to start businesses.
You know what was crazy is they
I thought Brad had a pretty good
Well, it does have a really good group
And it seemed like, you know, like they had enough men to do the job
I'm sure if he's listening, he's like
I could use three more good men type thing
The transmission shop was insane how busy it was
And he was turned to me it looked like
He was turning work away left right and center
Because he was just run off his feet
And he was saying
So if you're looking for a job in Newfoundland
100%.
100%.
Everybody's got the same problem.
It seems like not enough people want to show up and work.
Yep.
I mean, heck, you haven't been with the mashup.
Well, yeah, because the place Howard gas been short-handed for the past month.
Between the two of us over the last month, people are like, what's going on with the mash-up?
Like, the work I do that pays for my podcasting,
habit.
Yeah, they're shorthanded.
They're having trouble getting guys.
And so then
twos is working a lot.
Which is a good thing
and a bad thing all the same time.
But it just seems like it's constant.
Anywhere you go, there's not enough
competent people.
And I don't mean competent as like
they're rocket scientists and they can run a
whatever. I mean like people who
show up on time and tie their boots.
I get dirty hands for a living.
You don't got to be a rocket scientist to do it.
I don't know.
Some of the guys I've run into are super smart.
Oh, absolutely.
And then especially when they get into their niche.
You know, you see him.
Watching Brian put together a transmission, I was insane.
Was insane.
I did not know how many parts went into a transmission.
And he's just taking them out, set him off to the side, put it back together.
like it's Lego, I imagine.
Yeah.
And at one point, he's like, what's that stupid Marvel show where it's a movie, I think,
where the guy has the rings on his arm?
Shang-Chi.
Brian had all the rings of the transmission on his arms, and he was just throwing him in.
And he had like three or four grown men watch him going like, you just see him like,
how do you remember this?
Right?
Like, it was just, it was a thing to behold.
Yep.
Now, going back to the story.
Now, just to be clear, though, the only reason why that Marvel movie was dumb
was because the whole thing with Aquafino was garbage.
It was a decent premise.
It had some good action stuff at the start of it.
But, yeah, just trying to make some random chick.
Who isn't funny, by the way, the main hero of a movie that she's not even in the name of.
Why? Why, Marvel?
I'm walking, me and the kids have started.
We went and saw the newest spy.
Spider-Man?
Yeah.
In theater.
Just me and the three kids, Mel, they don't want to come.
I think she needed a break from us.
And I'm like, yeah.
Well, I'll take the kids to a movie.
I'm like, new Spider-Man's out.
And then I started watching the new Spider-Man.
I'm like, they don't know who that is.
They don't know who that is.
They've never watched any of them.
I'm like, there's just so much going on.
It's so, I'm going to have to watch the Marvel universe with them for them to even.
So we just started watching the start of the market.
Marvel.
Like Iron Man.
Iron Man is the second movie.
What's the first movie?
The Incredible Hulk.
Oh yeah, we watch that too.
The way the MCD universe has it laid out, the Incredible Hulk comes after it.
I understand.
I understand what you're saying.
The way it has it laid out in timeline, the Hulk comes after it.
That's why it's like that.
You know, it's really neat when you go back and you watch
one like from the middle where like the character development over the years like um when i think it
was in uh in winter soldier where uh where black widows like trying to tell them they're on that boat
with uh gsp and uh and they're just beating the crap out of people and she's like oh what about
this girl i don't what about that girl he's like oh like the one with the nose ring no i'm not
ready for that yet right you know or like in in the first Avengers movie where they say
something about Thor being a god and then and then Captain America's like there's only
one god ma'am and I'm pretty sure he doesn't wear drapes or something like that and you know
you just kind of watch him you know get more and more use to the present day you know the
yeah everybody likes to talk about how great Tony Stark
character evolution was, you know, but, you know, stuff like that.
And then you got Mark Rufflow who basically just, does he actually really?
Actually, the kids were really frustrated because they got to see Edward Norton and the development.
Edward Norton was in the Spider-Man movie?
No, no, no, was in the Incredible Hulk.
Yeah, oh, and then all of a sudden when he shows up and Avengers.
And they, they didn't understand it.
They're like, why would they do that?
And we had to try and explain it to them because obviously Edward Norton was,
in it for very, you know.
So a perfect way to segue,
to point out is
when you get to
Iron Man 2, where
Rody. Oh yeah, that's
another one. And that was another, man,
that sucked. They had,
the original guy was better.
Yeah, but he's also fucking
insane. Sure. I don't
care about what he's doing off-screen.
Yeah, but the point is, is that it makes it difficult
to make that movie.
Maybe.
Anyways, okay, I got it.
Somehow we got on the marble.
You brought it up.
I did.
So the transmission in 36 hours goes from being broke to running.
So there's like day, I don't know, I've been putting a post out of every day.
We've been on the road trip on Twitter, right?
Or on X.
And so there's video of us driving the suburban out of the shop because we did.
Yep.
Me and Brian took it for like a 25 minute kind of just test drive, make sure everything's
working fine sounded awesome we're all pumped we're driving back starts making a sound and a sound i've
never heard before and so i was saying brown like that's that sound he's like i don't know so we put it up
on the hoist and we go to work trying to figure out what it is now you got to understand we just
clean the shop we're all pumped the guys at the toe truck they're all everybody's happy
everything's working and then the sound and so we start is it a belt is it this is that
wish i had brian sitting beside me because you can tell the sound coming from
right beside the flywheel.
Okay.
So we thought maybe it was a cracked flywheel, something like that.
But there was movement in the shaft.
Does that sound about right?
And he's like, that ain't good.
So then Brian is beside himself.
So now you're thinking Bushix.
So he drains some of the oil to check it to see if there's metal shavings.
Yep.
There's metal shavings in the oil.
And then we drain all the oil.
And they start looking at the oil and they go,
when was your last oil change?
Because the first thing you're like,
you haven't changed your oil. I'm like, no. I changed my oil before I got on the rock.
Like I had a flat tire. I picked up a nail. So I went and got that, you know, change.
So you got nailed right before you blew the two trannies on your way to get on the ferry.
And so. And it left you deflated.
I was saying to the shop, I said, if you could change the tire or fix the tire and give me an oil change, I really appreciate it if you can squeeze it in.
and so they're like yeah we'll see what we can do and in my brain i you know i should i should have
said the oil i should have said exactly what it needed all the things but it was compressed time
you know i just i don't know i gave what old they put it like 530 or something like zero 30
okay like not good yeah i don't anyways so we drain the oil and now i got brian just he's
himself. Yeah, because they're looking at the oil and they're probably like thinking it's
been a while because first off, the metal shavings and also it's way thinner than it's supposed to be.
Correct. And like for people listening, it's a brand new engine. Like they built the engine, right?
Yeah.
Thing purred like a, like it just sounded, it's on, man, anyways, I miss the vehicle.
Sitting on the rock, I hope, I hope Sean from the transmission shop finds a way to just make that thing the greatest thing ever, regardless.
get to that in a second. So we put new oil in, we put Lucas in, the sound goes away almost
immediately. Yeah. And so they go, okay, I think we got it cased. There's some problems, but as long as
you know... Were you doing Lucas with every oil change? I wasn't. I didn't even know that was
a thing. Honestly, too, I didn't even know what Lucas was at the time. Okay. I was just like,
I have no idea. Then they show it to me and I'm like, okay. So I'm getting my mind ready.
I'm going to be checking this and this and this and this. Because when I left, I left, I was just like,
when I left, although I come from the farm, I'm a moron when it comes to like all the
inner workings of a vehicle. Of course you are. Look at, you spent like your, your expertise in
oil is basically limited to hair styling. Okay. You should actually, um, the fuel additive,
Lucas, and then Motomaster makes a good cheaper version too. For somebody who's going to be putting
a lot of miles on, uh-huh. You put a little bit of that.
in every time you fill up and it improves your mileage to the point where it more than covers the cost of it.
And it keeps everything running smoother.
Okay, fair enough.
Fair enough.
Listen, I've learned a ton in the last couple months.
Write that one down.
All right, no, just relax.
All right.
Anyways.
Oh, it'll be fine.
The next morning, okay, so it's Friday.
Mm-hmm.
There's a, now, by this time, we've got an alert that our ferry, we were supposed to be on Monday, gets bumped to Saturday.
We rebook it in for Saturday.
Then Nor Easter or Norwester comes through, whatever it is.
It shuts down the ferry.
Okay.
So now we're not getting off the rock for another.
This is why we get pushed to Thursday.
So the ferry is not going to be doing anything for you and can't get your rocks off.
And so I still have to meet Brian the next morning at the transmission shop to drop off the parts that we'd had.
So Mel and I load up the kids and we go, we're going to go.
Um, get a hotel room for the weekend because it sounds like the wind's going to be pretty bad.
And we've been stuck in a camper with no vehicle, et cetera, et cetera for some time.
So what we do is we go to drive to meet Brian.
And a mile from that shop, the oil pressure goes, it starts making a wild sound.
I limp it into the transmission shop.
This one.
What do you do?
Oh.
Oh my goodness.
You can't even.
No.
Can't even figure out.
You're giving all these jokes and everything.
else yeah sit sit right there dude okay all right fine I'm doing these
mics the wonderful thing about them is you can walk wherever yeah yeah so so
twos is tuesday is topping up everybody's coffee and and mrs. Tuz had left her
cup of coffee on the coffee table this morning and I was about to fill it up
without even looking closely a mile from the transmission shop it starts making the
sound so I limp it into the transmission shop park it walk in Brian the look
on his face when I tell him what's going on.
Brian, if you're listening, you did everything you possibly could
to get us back on the road.
And because of an oil change,
I don't even know how to, twos probably understands better than I ever will.
Regardless, we get it there and she's toast.
Now it needs a new engine.
A thinner oil doesn't have enough specific heat capacity
to absorb the high temperatures
of these small moving parts in an engine,
which causes them to get too hot,
and then they lose their strength,
and also have a tendency to warp,
which is a bad thing in high precision parts.
Correct.
So we load Brian up.
We send him home because I said he was going to stay,
he's going to find a way to change his flight,
and I'm like,
I don't like this is the thing about the South Gates that I admire so much is you know it was Kevin saying like nobody has customer service like Zeebs and like nobody no it flew across a country fixed the transmission in 36 hours
and then when it went wrong they didn't go well see you later they were trying to figure out a way to stay and I was like we
you just can't like you you got to go
like I mean you can but you can't like we we tried finding an engine we tried finding all the things to try and like hobble it together and the reason why I'm back in Alberta actually maybe the funny thing is is you know I almost made Brian piss himself laughing because the part I didn't tell about the story is Pat the fisherman and PI right we were talking about the roundtable yeah Pat have been texting me the weather for the ferry crossing and saying you know you got to be careful with this
And I kept telling that, it's above my pay grade, but I know somebody I can ask.
So I pray about it every morning.
So, God, if you don't want me to get on this ferry, you know how to shut it down.
And when I was telling Brian is, I didn't mean blow a transmission, blow a second transmission, blow an engine.
I'm like, okay.
The monkey's fist, the monkey's hand curls a finger.
Literally, Eddie Newphy, that heard the story is like, you weren't supposed to be on that ferry.
I'm like, no kidding.
I mean, it's not like it got blown up.
Who knows where it was supposed to go?
But regardless, we got delayed.
And so then I went to work on, okay, let's just get a new vehicle.
Just buy a vehicle on the rock or wherever, and life will go on.
Well, then you talk to Alberta registrations.
You've got to have an out of province.
You've got to come back to Alberta.
So expand on that a little bit.
Because for anybody, for anybody under the impression that this is a well-functioning democracy
of 13 different provinces and territories that communicate well between each other and don't set up
artificial barriers.
This would be a perfect point to say the fuck they do, and here's why.
So when I talk to Alberta Registries, if you buy a vehicle out of province, you have to
come back to the province and have it inspected, right?
You have to go through it, so then you can bring it in an out-of-province inspection just to show
that it's a functioning vehicle.
Is there any difference between the qualifications of a mechanic in Newfoundland versus one in Alberta?
And I know the answer to that.
But yeah.
So what made it even more frustrating to us is.
So I was talking to insurance and they said, well, time to time, you can buy a vehicle in like the last five years and they might waive it.
And so I called Alberta Registries with that in mind.
Like, what if I went and bought a 2025?
You know, or whatever.
I'm like looking at the price tags of these going.
Yeah.
Wanting to vomit.
But like, what if I went down?
I'm just wanting to create myself.
I come back to Brian Burke's interview all the time because I replayed it probably a year ago.
And in there, he says if you give yourself good options, you'll make good choices.
So I was just trying to create a series of options.
None of them were the best.
But I was like, what if I bought this?
What if I bought that?
What if I bought this?
You got to whiteboard everything.
Right.
And they said, yeah, we'll give you.
be like two weeks come back. Maybe we could extend it, you know, what do you need, three weeks?
Like, but I'm buying, I'm about to buy relatively a brand new vehicle. You tell me you can't
waive the out of province? I'm like, what? That doesn't make any sense. It's because if they
start doing that, then there's less paperwork for them and then they don't have a job anymore.
Well, I tell you what, that's why I'm back in Alberta. Because when I put it through all the things,
I went, okay, you know, sure I could buy a $3,000 thing and get off, you know,
but then I still got to come all the way back.
Then I got to turn around and go all the way back.
So why Alberta?
Why am I here?
I flew all the way back.
Because of bureaucracy.
Bought a vehicle, and now I'm about to drive all the way back across to pick Mel and the family up and we're going to continue on.
You know, Mel and I had at a moment where she's like, do you want to keep going?
And I'm like, yeah.
When I asked for adventure, I wasn't sure this is how it was going to go, but yes, I'm going to keep going.
I'm going to drive across the country again.
I'm going to meet up with Melanie Kids.
I got like six to eight interviews in Nova Scotia that I want to do, and then we're in a kid south.
Probably the biggest thing this is screwed up for me is I was planning to fly back for October 19th.
And I just go, I just eat my brain.
Yeah, too bad you couldn't go an extra two weeks out of it.
Yeah.
Like I just, at this point, I'm like, when,
What am I spending more money to come back just to cast a vote?
I'm going to get registered.
I'm going to cast my vote from afar.
Me and you have already working on,
which is probably not news,
but we should start talking about it,
is we're going to do an election live coverage,
although it's going to be a referendum live coverage.
And we're going to do what we do very well.
And instead of us being here in Alberta side by side,
we're going to do it from one's going to be a one,
Washington, D.C. and one's going to be here in Alberta. And we're going to knock it out of the park.
And we're going to have something for everybody to tune into live on the referendum day.
And we're going to have some people from all over Alberta talking about it. And we're going to cover it.
And we've specifically talked about how we want people who don't agree with us as well.
Yeah, well, we want to have live coverage that doesn't suck.
And that exactly. This is what we do. So for everybody wondering what the heck,
is doing I'm back in Alberta for this short window to interview twos or sit and chat
with twos so that I can turn around and drive all the way back I had to come by a
vehicle and then we're carrying on on our trip so I landed in I land in yeah okay
no I'm not quite done dissecting this whole out-of-providence thing yet so the
out-of-providence inspection there's a checklist of this has to be within this
tolerance this has to be this has to be that do these lights work yes or not
know. And so I don't know if every provincial inspection sheet is exactly the same. I'm guessing
there's some slight differences. But if you've got a competent mechanic in Newfoundland,
I get the fact that the checklist isn't in Newfoundees, but he can probably still figure it out.
Correct. And so, so the rule isn't, is this form filled out and does this vehicle match these
specifications, it is, is this form filled out and was it filled out in Alberta, which has absolutely
no bearing on the safety or, or viability of a vehicle? And just so everybody who's sitting there
going, why didn't Sean go down this route, this or this or this or, there's lots of different
creative outside the box thinking that I thought about doing, but buying a vehicle out in the
Maritimes, specifically, comes with a lot of tax that almost takes away some of the affordability,
if you would.
Yep.
And I thought, I went, you know, I even went as far as I'm like, I wonder if I could register
the Sean Newman podcast in Newfoundland and have like a second headquarters.
And like, I did a lot of like outside the box thing.
Yeah, it would have been.
Yeah.
Shows that Sean Newman has got a mailman.
box out in Newfoundland, right? Like 5-790 Newfoundland Limited, headquartered in Gildo, Newfoundland.
Believe me, I worked through a lot, and I don't know if this is the best plan, but it was my plan.
And so be it. I'm acting it out. So it's been, you know, we're supposed to be on Newfoundland,
I think, you know, with the fairies and everything, like basically nine days it was supposed to
take from getting on a ferry to getting off the ferry back on Cape Britain.
Well, that's some stamina.
And instead we, I think we...
So the ferry from Cape Breton to Newfoundland takes over a week?
Fairy from, no, the ferry from Cape Britain to Argentia is about 12 to 15 hours, something like that.
All right.
But from getting on the ferry to going and seeing Newfoundland and getting back on.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
It was supposed to take us about nine days.
Yeah, because I'm like, you could cross the Atlantic at that time.
Did you see Sable Island?
No.
Well, I mean, you're heading back to Halifax.
You might still get a chance to do it.
I don't know anymore.
The last...
That's the one with all the horses.
No.
The last two weeks is a blur.
I don't know.
Okay.
All right.
Did you see a small island with a lot of horses on it?
No.
Okay.
There is a small island.
I know this.
We drove by the Cabot Trail.
We were supposed to be the first thing we did getting off the ferry.
We were going to go drive it one day.
And 20 years ago when we biked me and Dust, sat and Lori, looked at that and contemplated biking the Cabot Trail.
And then we're like, we just got a whole country to bike.
So we decided against it.
So I was really excited to go see this famous Cavett Trail.
And I drove by it again.
So that'll be for a later, Sean, to go deal with.
But everybody's healthy.
Everybody's happy.
Kids are doing great.
They've now done homeschool on a ferry in the vehicle at campgrounds.
And they're probably further ahead than the kids.
I mean, Shea got to help Brian and watch him put together transmission.
Yeah.
He was there the full day of us.
I'm like...
That's a big upgrade from changing out tires.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
And he was like drinking it up, man.
It was cool to see him like...
That is neat.
Yeah.
Yeah. So lots of wonderful people. Brad and Newfoundlandtowing, his whole group was unreal.
They also helped us out with the ferry, which is unreal.
They helped us out with giving us a shot to work on for as many days as we needed.
Brian came, him and Zane were unreal, right?
Sean at the transmission shop was an absolute beauty.
That's who I ended up selling the suburban too.
He just basically bought it for nothing
Because I'm like to get it hauled off to scrap here by the time I'm into it
So he's got a vehicle there for the tires and everything else
I hope he does something with it but the old
Black
I was struggling with a name for it because I'm like is it the beauty is it the beast
Is it whatever
But she sits on the rock so her final resting place is sitting at a
Spot in St. John's
Yeah
Well, I'd like to think it would enjoy the view.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, everybody was great.
The amount of people, whether it was in P.E.I.
Or Newfoundland that was looking at the frame of it going, this is unbelievable.
Because they talk about the salt and how it just eats everything.
Eats everything.
And they were looking at it.
And it's like, this thing's 20 years old and it's got a better frame than a new vehicle coming off the lot in Newfoundland.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
So that was cool.
Now, let's talk about this.
October 19th, me and you are doing referendum live covers.
Yep.
So mark your calendar, folks.
You already had it marked when you're done casting your ballot.
You know where to tune into.
And if you're not from here, if you're listening to this from another place,
like Saskatchewan or Manitoba.
You know what?
Manitoba was freaking awesome.
I can't speak bad about Manitoba anymore.
You can.
You can.
I believe in you.
You can, but I was like, of all the provinces that shocked me, it was spending time in Manitoba.
Manitoba is probably got some of the best potential there that is being squandered, in my opinion.
That's probably a good way to put it.
I have spent a day in Manitoba, aside.
from the airport.
Yeah, but that, and it was, and it was like, I was a couple hundred yards into the
province, literally just in the bottom corner, there was some oil well, and I'm like,
I'm technically in Manitoba right now.
And it was so close to the corner that when I got back, my cell phone bill, I was picking up
a U.S. tower, and my cell phone bill was insane for like one day.
I'm like, this is brutal.
I wasn't even in the States.
I was in Manitoba.
And it was still stupidly expensive.
So I had one bad experience there.
Well, it's beautiful.
And I never thought to equate.
Because I've driven through it.
You know, and I played hockey and tried,
and I drove it every year.
Played with guys from Manitoba.
So I spent a amount of weekends living it up in Manitoba.
I've known a bunch of people from like the Swan River, Flynn, Flon,
up around there.
And then they're fucking beauties.
then um but like we went to grand beach yeah and i've been hearing about this i'm the one who told
you about it you tell me about everything hey hey i i i you know what i'm glad is that uh no matter
how time many days him away from twos he has told me about life folks he's told me about everything
every spot known to man twos was the first to do it so i got a buddy who played for the
bombers back in the day okay he doesn't anymore because we're all
old, you know.
You're getting old, yeah.
Yeah.
And I remember, I was just chatting with him like, well, how's Manitoba?
And he's like, dude, you would not believe this beach.
I'm like, a beach.
He's like, yeah, dude, it's like a world-class beach.
Like, is it a Manitoba class beach?
And you just don't know the difference?
He's like, no, dude.
And so that's when you said you were going to Manitoba.
I'm like, well, there's some beach.
I don't know the name of it's like a half hour away from Winnipeg.
It's a little farther and half hour.
But regardless, it's not much further.
And Grand Beach was what it was built to be.
They built the beach.
I had it built.
Build.
Oh.
Like, I've been told about this beach and we were at Winnipeg Beach, which was on the other side of the lake.
And I was like, yeah, this is nice.
but like, I don't know.
I feel like I've been sold a promise
that doesn't quite live up to expectation.
And then we went around the lake to Grand Beach
and stayed there.
And that was something.
They had sand dunes that were just massive.
Kids went and played in the sand dunes all day.
And then like the actual beach, the water, everything.
It was great.
Like, it was really nice.
Like, I, you know, it was really nice.
And now for those people who are wondering,
Tuse is on call, so who knows?
Maybe...
No, that wasn't...
That was just my buddy, Dave.
Sorry, Dave.
That's all right.
It'll be fine.
October 19th, me and Tuse are planning something special.
We'd love you to join us.
Yeah, make sure you join us.
And you're going to want to join us.
You're going to want to join us.
We're going to have a little bit of fun.
Just think back to the federal election coverage.
There was some people who did it really well,
but I don't know if there's anybody who did it.
better than us?
No.
Nobody did better than us.
Like sure, CBC had more production value,
but you've got a whole bunch of people sitting there looking bored
trying to come up with some way to fill the time
before the results start coming in.
Our biggest problem was how do we find a nice, polite way
to cut this segment off and go to the next one?
Correct. And that'll be the problem with this too.
Mm-hmm.
That'll be the problem we have with, uh,
Man, Alberta referendum coverage is going to be allowing people to get what they want out in a time frame.
Because when you bring on some of the people we've got lined up, yeah, it's going to be interesting.
And so the other thing is, is I'm planning on giving away some Cornerstone Forum tickets.
They haven't gone on sale yet.
Newsflash, that's coming soon.
So there's going to be some tickets giveaway on the forum.
we're going to have a little bit of fun
or on the referendum coverage
we're going to give away some tickets on the forum
to the forum
which reminds me
Tuse are you hosting next year's cornerstone form
I don't know do you want me to
yeah okay did you know
newsflash
just announced Tews is hosting
Cornerstone Forum 2027
yeah I mean it'll be
roughly like it was last time
which for those of you
who didn't get to
peek behind the curtain. Two's came in, fully prepared notes on each one of the guests.
And Sean pulled them aside and said, everything you have planned is not going to work,
light it on fire. And while everybody is having interesting conversations up on the stage,
you're going to spend the whole damn day scribbling furiously. Did you learn anything?
I learned that I have an infinite amount of patience for you. But I didn't really get to listen
anybody because I spent I spent pretty much the whole time like people come up and they were saying
I was going to come talk to you before but you were really busy in the middle of something.
I'm like yeah and I kind of want to murder Sean.
Well that's funny because I want to murder twos because your cadence you're going to take seven minutes
to introduce somebody you don't have that we have short amount of time dues.
Yeah so anyway Sean and I are going to be having
a rehash of that.
Yeah, well, I mean, I think that's what we've come to expect, haven't we?
This is what we do.
And so anyways, underneath the water, this little duck is trying to kick that little
duck in the duck dick.
And everything looks calm on the surface.
Okay, I've been going from Alberta two months.
Okay.
Walk me through Alberta right now because, like, you know, in the last week, you've had
Daniel Smith crying and like being very emotional.
Yep.
And then people saying it's acting.
And I'm like, listen, folks, we can, we can sit here and say that, you know,
Daniel Smith just overnight became a great actor and that she's not feeling the pressure
of trying to walk an insanely fine line of things.
I don't think that's true, but maybe I'm wrong because I'm far, you know, like,
this is what happens when you leave Alberta.
Everywhere I go,
they love Daniel Smith.
Love her.
Really?
Oh.
But you have to remember,
if you're,
not that I went to BC,
but if you're in PC right now,
you're watching Eby,
and you're like,
how on earth is that guy still in power?
You know, in Manitoba?
It's in, in BC,
it's because everybody's a crackhead.
Sure.
In Manitoba, you got canoe,
you know?
and I mean, you get Doug Ford.
You just keep going and people admire Daniel Smith
and wish they were, you know, she was their premier.
That's what I see from other provinces and hear from people.
I mean, you're walking around on foot
and seeing a guy with roller skates and thinking, wow, that would be nice.
Meanwhile, you could get a full fucking bicycle.
if you really just dream big enough.
But the Daniel Smith crying thing,
we didn't get into it on the mashup,
but I looked at it
and if you compare it to
other politicians
when they cry in front of the camera,
sure.
It's, they get to a certain spot in the speech
and then it's a,
and then they pause,
and it just so happens that they,
They've got a handkerchief and they dab their eyes.
And then they'll take a deep breath and continue.
And if you compare what Danielle Smith was doing and saying to how, I mentioned this before,
is it looks like when someone's giving a difficult eulogy, you know, they're there to speak.
They're there to say their peace and they're powering through the emotions rather than making them the focal point.
And it read a lot more like that to me.
And I know somebody really well who has done all sorts of interrogation training, like all over the world.
Like literally gone to Langley, not British Columbia, Langley, Virginia.
CIA headquarters for interrogation training.
And I was talking to that person about it.
And they were like, there is no way that was faked.
Now, the only question is, so now you've got the Premier of Alberta
visibly upset about the direction that this referendum is going.
But keep in mind that she can see a lot of pieces on the board that we can't.
Correct.
So she's upset about the direction of the referendum.
We know she wants to stay in Canada.
You know that she's publicly said that.
And it's,
she's done a bunch of dumb stuff that doesn't make sense in either direction.
And so is it,
is it because she's being forced in some direction
the same way that the floor crossing came out of nowhere
and she has a secret desire for Alberta to separate
that someone's holding something over her?
Or what?
I don't know. All I know is that whatever direction things are going, she doesn't like it.
And she's got a full view of the board, even if she doesn't always understand what she's looking at.
And so does she want Alberta to stay in Canada? I mean, that would make sense given how nonsensical
things like the MOUs are. And if she's looking visibly upset about how all the rest of Canada really had to do all Ottawa,
all Ottawa had to do at really just any point was, you know, you can stop the trolley at any point.
You've just got to admit that you were wrong.
You know, a little bit of an apology.
And if you thank you, here and there.
And it probably wouldn't be at this point.
Instead of, we're paying for everything, well, fuck you, you ungrateful bastards.
Why are you so ungrateful for the fact that you get to pay for all of our shit?
Compare that to.
the hospitality that you were talking about in Newfoundland.
Because that hospitality is exactly what people classically think about Canadians.
And I would say especially Newfoundland and Saskatchewan.
But I'm definitely biased in that.
And then you compare that to the sham that is presented as cooperation within Confederation.
You know, like, the people, the people are great.
But easy buddy.
So you compare that to the way the politicians act, the way they and the politicians
who get voted in by these people and the lack of cooperation or just humanity.
This is just a transaction.
We're just an ATM.
And it's interesting to think about how it's how it's been going.
But as far as Danielle goes, this is probably the toughest that any, well, I don't know, I don't know how it was in fucking Quebec back in the day.
But the perspective from the rest of Canada is decidedly different here than it was in 95.
I'll tell you that.
There's no love in for Alberta.
There's no, please stay.
We value you.
We think you're important.
because if they say, presumably, because if they say that they value us and they think we're important,
then they have to acknowledge the contributions that we've made.
And that's not something that it appears the rest of Canada is prepared to do.
Yeah, and when you're saying the rest of Canada, you're talking specifically about the political class.
And the people who keep voting them in.
Has anything changed on...
You know, like, I get asked being, obviously, from here, you know, like my thoughts on it all the time.
What do you think is coming in the fall on?
They tell us 30%.
I'm like, everything, the way they're acting would tell me you have 70%.
I mean, the media, you know, the fact that Kenny and Notley have teamed.
I'm like, Kenny and Notley teamed up.
Like, in my brain, I'm like, did they want Albertans?
state when I saw that like if anything that's like that is the strangest group of people working
together to try and keep Alberta from from leaving I've ever seen no no you've got you've got
one person who made their career supporting big governments and out of touch institutions
and having entire industries supported on government largesse and
then on the other side of it, you've got a person who made their career with big government
and large institutions and who spent their career developing industries who are supported
by government large S.
They're the same fucking thing, Sean.
They're the same fucking thing.
Jason Kenny spent what, 15, 14, 16 years in Ottawa as an MP.
He brought up equalization.
if I'm remembering this correctly, twice.
Once was he was worried that there was a mistake in the math
and that he wanted to make sure that the have-not provinces
weren't going to get screwed over by an accounting error.
And the second time, it was an offhand jab at some MP from fucking Quebec.
You're there to represent not the whole country,
not even the whole province, the people in your specific riding.
And those are the only times in over a decade that you brought up equalization.
And I guarantee you, I guarantee you that he heard about that on a constant basis,
especially after it was his government who set the current equalization formula.
And he just quietly went along with it.
because it doesn't survive the in-party filter.
See, because for the party, the main concern is not the individual ridings or the individual provinces.
The main concern is how do we either get into power or stay into power or consolidate that power or whatever else, right?
And so an Albertan MP saying, well, it just, I live in a, like,
Michelle Remple is an MP for urban Alberta in Calgary.
I think Calgary knows Hill, if I remember correctly.
I think I can confidently say that she has exactly zero dairy farms in her riding because it's part of the city.
She voted for Bill C202, which for those of you don't know was the bill that got passed unanimous.
that the block Quebec
put forward to protect the dairy cartel
from being considered in any international trade negotiations.
So not even just, you know, like my guy here
and his office is right around the corner.
He could make a weak fucking argument
that there's a few dairy farmers around here.
And the argument would suck
because if there's a half dozen,
dairy farms in this riding because it's a big riding there's a half dozen dairy farms here and you know
the other 90 actually because there's probably like 110,000 people in this riding so the 1009,000
94 people got out weighed by the 6th he could make that argument but for michel remple there's zero
cattle farms in Calgary-O's Hill.
So why did you vote for something supporting the cattle farms or protecting the dairy industry?
You literally have zero constituents with an interest in that.
Does it make Canada stronger?
No, it makes Canada fucking weaker.
Because you've got these artificially propped up industries that just inherently get inefficient
and are able to charge a premium to all of the people in your fucking riding.
because it's a cartel.
If there's one thing that gets to wound up, it's the Derry cartel.
Speaking on Calgary, since I've been away, the NDP won a by-election.
Yep.
Thoughts?
Well, everybody's got, everybody's got a thought on this.
Okay.
And they're all equally unprovable, is the problem.
So you could say that the UCP lost touch with the...
Voting base.
Yes.
and in whatever different way you want.
Sure.
You could say that the NDP are becoming more relevant
and that people are seeing them as a viable alternative.
I don't think that's a reasonable argument, but it's...
It's another thing put out there that...
Yeah.
Yeah.
You could make an argument that given the UCP's incredibly soft stance on separation
and given how many people in this province seem to be supporting it,
that if they're going to hamstring our worst,
one opportunity to get under the boot of Ottawa, then no, I'm not going to support that party.
And again, you could think the thing that would settle it is if you had some polling done
in that specific writing, who did you vote for? And what were your top three major
considerations in that decision? Sure. And yet, so we've got this multi-million dollar
our industry of polling in Canada.
And they never ask the interesting and obvious questions.
That thing about, like, let's say you get paid stupid amounts of money to, I don't know,
it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter.
But then the easiest way to get the best results, you never do that.
So you're a gold miner, right?
And there's a whole bunch of shiny nuggets in the river.
but you decide to just go digging over there instead.
Dude, there's shiny nuggets in the river.
Just go fucking pick them up.
No, no, I'm going to go dig over here.
Why are you digging over here?
Well, it's probably because you get paid more to dig over there
than you do to pick up the shiny gold nuggets.
And that begs the question why.
So at the end of the day, you don't know
because at the end of the day,
you're like they haven't really done the work
to figure out why they voted that way.
This multi-million dollar industry is faced with, they've got the means to do it.
They could very easily put it together and it's a valid question.
But if you get the wrong answer on it, oh, that doesn't look good for the people who pay your paycheck.
Hmm.
If you don't want to, if you don't want to hear an answer you don't like, don't ask the question.
That's polling in Canada.
Don't ask a question you don't want to hear the answer.
answer to. That's a better way to put it. That's literally the modus operandi for this industry in Canada.
Everywhere I go out east. Yeah. It's interesting because you can kind of like,
the big thing out there isn't Alberta referendum.
What's the big thing? Trump. Oh, for fuck sakes.
Oh, you know, like being around.
I sit there and I even think of the transmission.
shop the one morning and we were having a conversation and four different elderly gentlemen.
I don't want to put them at 70 or 80.
I would think like 60, like maybe recently retired or right in that range.
And lots of them, you know, talking about Canada, had some really interesting thoughts.
And you know, okay.
And then somewhere Trump would come up and the elbows would come out, you know, almost.
Yep.
I mean, they actually didn't go up, but it's funny on it.
It's just, I'm like, oh, this is interesting, right?
They look at Trump as the reason for all the problems right now.
Well, I mean, since Trump came into power and in the several years before that,
a trillion dollars has left the Alberta economy in investment.
Here's the thing, is it all happened before Trump.
but you could say it like that.
I wonder, do you talk to people about where they get their news and their information from?
Yeah, the people who I thought were the most well-balanced, they brought up actually Western Standard.
Oh.
Which was interesting.
Yeah.
But I would say that was in the lower category.
The next category was Juno.
Okay.
Maybe elevate.
And then the...
And then the...
And well, there was a few that brought up Josh Udall.
Yeah.
But the most talked about TikTok.
Like videos on TikTok.
And would you say that they're better informed or worse informed?
I thought they had some interesting takes, but when it came to Trump, it was like
whatever the Liberal Party is doing by creating Orange Man Bad, right?
Like everything he did.
does. He's the aggressor. He's lost his mind. Like all the things. However they've positioned that,
it's been very effective. Because they look at, and I'm painting a lot of Canadians with a
wide brush right now. But it's just people who voted conservative are speaking about Kearney
in very kind terms, if you would. Oh. Of like, you know what? He's doing a pretty good job.
of having to deal with Trump.
And I'm like, really?
We'll walk me through that.
And they look at what Trump is doing as being erratic, as being aggressive, as openly hostile to Canada, like all these things.
I'm like, that's interesting.
Because without Trump, there is no Carney.
I mean, Carney needs Trump to be in there and have his.
the Joker that made Batman. Right.
You made me. I made you.
Correct.
Now, would you say that those people are getting most of their information from TikTok?
Like, the people who get a lot of their information from TikTok, where do they land on this whole?
They would say Trump is bad. I'm not...
It's interesting that a Chinese-owned platform...
Once again, I'm painting a lot of people with a wide brush.
right but like I haven't talked to I have I personally haven't talked to a thousand people since I left
but at the same time it's been a lot right like I remember in Manitoba lots of different people
who definitely don't share the same views as I do yep they're frustrated if I take if I didn't
bring anything if I didn't insert anything to do with the US anything like that they're very upset
with how Canada's going they all feel the danger they
all of witness the health care system falling apart.
Like those two things, they can see, like in Winnipeg that the people I was sitting around
with the one night definitely voted for Wapkado, definitely were MDP, definitely lean liberal
in everything.
They talked about how dangerous Winnipeg was.
They talked about how there was six or seven different gangs that have centered around
that because we talked about Winnipeg.
And I could be butchering this about.
bit and somebody will be like that isn't exactly right fair enough but they were talking about
winnipeg being a hub of just distribution uh we're talking i mean from a logistical standpoint
it makes sense given that it's kind of in the middle different criminal networks are operating
there and how a guy who's our age who didn't look like yeah i'm not saying i want to go uh one-on-one with
them but at the same time he wasn't uh tanner ablegate for instance like he wasn't like this
behemoth of a man but he was he was a formal guy
he talked about how dangerous Montague was
and he's like I don't feel comfortable walk around
the end of the streets
and so I said
I'm like so what are you going to
you know and he's like I'm just one guy
what am I going to do about it and that
that mindset I've found a lot
just one person there's just no fixing it
and I'm like well that's different about Alberta
like when I come to Alberta
and when I get further away from it
and you know what everybody tries to point to
is all the infighting and how
nobody can get along and I'm like yeah that's a beauty of it
The people are upset and they're talking about things and they're actively discussion.
It's heated and it's on each other all the time.
But that's what happens when people actually get to discuss and are engaged in it.
They see the things.
Then you say something like, I don't agree with that.
And then they go at it.
What I see the further I went east was people had come to terms with,
I'm just one guy.
What can I do about it?
I just, I'm thinking like, did you ever read different seasons?
Different seasons, no.
Okay.
It's the Stephen King.
It's the anthology book.
It's got...
Did it get?
The other ones...
Well, one of the books is apt pupil.
Got made into a movie with Brad Renfroni and McKellar.
And one of the other books in there...
So are you saying they're good enough that they got made into motion pictures?
That's what you're saying?
Let me finish the sentence.
I don't know.
One of the other short stories in this was Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.
Okay.
So yeah.
To answer your question.
You could have just said they were good.
No, too, just got to make a just hammer point down.
They've been turned into, well, it's Shoshank for Temption on people's list.
Is it in the top five of everybody's list?
I think it is.
Yeah.
If you watch that movie, you're like, that was a masterpiece.
So, okay, fair enough.
It's a masterpiece.
Okay.
We could have just, if you had just, for like two seconds, we would have got there on her own.
This is on me.
I'm the one.
I've been sitting here listening.
the entire time.
Somehow I got, man, you know
what? I get to talk to it and it's okay.
Fine, it's your show.
It is my show. All right.
So anyway. I'm going to deal with you all the time.
Anyway, Andy Dufrein,
they talked about how there's two kinds of people in the world.
There's the people who see a tornado coming
and they're like, well, shit.
And then there's the people who batten down the hatches and get
into the root cellar and bolt it shut and
all that stuff and how Andy Dufran.
was definitely the kind of person who planned for the eventualities.
And so when he got into prison, he had something like $5,000 shoved up his prison wallet,
which was how he was able to afford to get all the things from red,
like the rock hammer and, you know, the fancy rocks that he carved with and, you know, all that stuff.
And so it was probably pretty hard to translate onto a screen.
I feel like the people in Manitoba are the ones who just look at the tornado coming and go, well, fuck it.
Hopefully it moves out of the way.
Hopefully it moves.
And the people in Alberta are the ones who start shoving $20 bills up their butt.
That's funny because I look at Alberta and I have a different view.
I just think they're the tornado.
And they're like, get the heck out of the way.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's actually, do you want to be a tornado?
I'll be a tornado.
Yeah, you think you can.
No, this is what we're going to do.
And it looks messy from the outside.
Because people talk about, I don't know,
take your pick of whoever you want and infighting and this and that.
And you can see the different things going on an X and it just looks messy.
It does look very messy.
And when you're in it, you're like, yeah, okay, all right, that's what's, okay.
The further you get, people look at it and they're just like, I don't know what's going over in Alberta.
I'm like, I know exactly what's going on.
freedom of speech,
democracy.
They're trying to exercise their rights
because they're upset.
Nobody will listen to them
because if they listen to them,
they'd hear some points.
They'd like,
actually,
that's a pretty valid argument.
Well,
I mean,
we talked about it before.
There was that video clip
of that lady
holding a Forever Canada sign
getting interviewed
and talking about
how weird it is
that they're being explicitly told
not to engage
with the people on the other side.
Which is interesting
because presumably you've got that sign because you want to sway opinions.
And when someone has the competing opinion,
you're told to just not even try and go near them.
It's like, did you ever play Diablo?
Any of them?
I know what you're talking about.
I want to say yes.
Okay.
But obviously not enough to know exactly what you're going to talk about.
All right.
So you start off and you're level one.
And it always occurred to me that, you know,
because you get out of it.
of the first town
your interest room
or whatever it is
and then
there's just a whole
bunch of level one
stuff
and then you fight
it and you can
barely beat it
Yeah
yeah
and I'm like
so
if Diablo
this devil
from hell
had
taken over
like this whole
world except
for the towns
you'd think
that he could have
just been like
we'll just
we'll spread ourselves
out a little bit more
but everybody
all the demons
and the animals
and stuff who were levels one through four,
just stay back. Just stay back.
Because if you'd have just left that town
and been level five, and everything's
level five, you'd never gotten anywhere.
You'd just get out, get killed by the first thing you saw,
and that would have been the end of the game.
It's huge oversight on the...
That's most games, though.
Yeah, well, it is. It is.
It always starts you with comparable so you can grow.
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
And you're always just like, you know what,
if they just told that first guy
to just stay home that day,
and let the other ones jump in, this game would have been over in five seconds.
And you would have been taken over the world and everything would have been fine from your perspective.
But as you get going, every once in a while, you'll go into an area where you're like, oh shit, I cannot handle this.
I'm not equipped for this.
And that's kind of what Lukazek is trying to stop, I imagine.
Is the newbies going in and being converted over to the other side?
Yeah, because you can't withstand that.
So just go over here, talk to some people who are neutral.
Go talk to the level ones.
Go talk to the level ones who don't know any better.
And your dinky little bronze sword can win them over to your side.
But don't go over here where everybody's got the legendary gear.
It's kind of what it is.
You hear that, Albertans?
You got the legendary gear on.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, you know, how many different debates have you heard where Stockwell Day had basically the best argument I've heard yet,
where he was saying more or less that Canada is going to make it really difficult,
and it's going to be a long-drawn-out process, and also Canada's a bureaucratic dumpster fire
where nothing gets done in a timely fashion.
I'm like, okay, to be fair, that is the best argument that anybody's presented.
It's not an argument to stay, but it is the best argument I've heard so far.
Jason Kennedy is just saying, well, there's a lot of finer points you guys haven't figured out yet.
No, no, no, no, no.
You need to make an argument for why we should want to stay here in this country.
And saying that you haven't figured out step 526 of the path is not a good argument for not going down that path.
and that's where the debates haven't been particularly strong on the one side because they aren't
the talking points aren't strong.
Well, we can change this.
You know, we can...
Yeah, well, anyone's staring at Canada knows we can change this or whatever is like, no,
you aren't looking at the problem of Canada or you're omitting the fact that like we are
Everything stock all day said.
When they said, well, if you leave Alberta, you'll be landlocked.
The best answer I heard, whether it was Keith Wilson or twos who said it first.
It's twos.
We're already landlocked.
When you just take a step back, you're like, that's so true.
Yep.
And we're bureaucratically landlocked.
That specifically was Keith.
But the other best argument I've heard is also one that I made.
You know in the watchman where Rorschach, he's in the prison, right?
And he's like, you don't understand.
I'm not locked in here with you.
You're locked in here with me.
So, yeah, the rest of Canada has Alberta landlocked.
But a sovereign Alberta is also a choke point because everything goes through it.
And so now you've got a situation.
where you're like, look, you guys could be dicks if you wanted to about this,
but it would be better for everybody to just be cooperative.
Because we don't really have the opportunity to,
we have that weapon in our arsenal.
We have that weapon, but it's locked away in a vault.
And we're not allowed to take it out.
Whereas the sovereign Alberta, you just set it up on the front lawn.
I'm not going to go anywhere near it.
but you guys do realize that your two rail lines and your two highways go through our country.
Well, I think if you're realistic with yourself, like at the highest levels, they know if Alberta goes, Quebec goes.
And if those two go, you don't have a country anymore.
Well, Alberta goes, Saskatchewan goes.
Me and Jews were talking, right?
Sorry, I'm acting like I'm talking to the audience, because which I am.
With the referendum coming up in our live coverage, I was saying,
it's the Super Bowl for us.
You know, like we have to approach this as like, you know,
we're going to do the best we can and we've been building towards it.
Although we didn't start.
We started with building towards the federal election, right?
That's why we were doing all the little elections to get better for this.
And you're like, no, this isn't the Super Bowl.
This is like Marvel's end game, right?
Like, and you're not wrong.
So I don't think anyone else that is paying attention this
and has done the math and has looked at it,
and takes all the emotions out of it,
even if they want Alberta to remain.
They know what this means for Canada.
Yeah.
This isn't a referendum on Alberta separation.
This is a referendum on this second largest country in the world,
becoming six different countries.
Yeah.
Any final thoughts before I shut this off
and hop in a vehicle and begin to drive like a madman?
I don't know. What do you...
I mean, I'm looking...
I was looking forward to coming back to Alberta.
This is the weirdest circumstance of I've had to come back.
But now that we've made a plan on...
Or starting to make the plan, I should say,
and hopefully more details to come on the mashups coming forward, you know?
Like, I'm excited for the 19th for a whole different type of reason now.
Like, I was excited to be back and be around everybody
and, you know, probably come stay with you
and go cast a ballot and carry on.
And go up to Edmonton on the 17th for the rally.
Yeah, and like, and do some things.
Now I'm like, oh, yeah, but this gives us,
we've been building, you know,
when I look at what we've done with the mashup,
you know, like, this is kind of what it's been built for.
Not purpose built for, but.
Not purpose built for, but like when you get here,
it's like, oh, yeah, we already have the aircraft carrier
that's sitting here and let's just,
carry on.
It's a perfectly fitted piece to the puzzle.
And we kind of accidentally stumbled on it.
Yeah.
You know, and over the course of over 222 episodes,
gradually, you know, hone this little edge of it here and that part of it over there.
I'm very much looking forward to the referendum.
I'm optimistic.
I'm not looking at it.
Like, I hope we get 35% to send Ottawa a message.
Like, I think it's going to be tight.
But you look at places around here, I figure it's probably about 80% leave.
And we're still pretty close to the urban center of Calgary.
You go to like Sundry.
The petition people said that like over 90% of the possible signatures in that area signed the petition to leave.
that's going to be a blowout and that's well if i go you know you con strong had a post on x i forget
what that was a week ago maybe maybe it's a little less just talking about he'd reached out to
all his family members in alberta and he's convinced them all he's done his part good and you go well i mean
if you're listening to this and you haven't talked to a few people about it probably should
just talk to a few people about it there's gonna be there's there's going to be questions you can't
possibly answer, but there should be, there should be low-hanging fruit to at least talk about.
Yep.
Because going east, I brought this question up with so many people, and I was very curious to hear
what their thoughts were going to be.
And I have ran into a few that think we're spoiled brats, and I chuckle about that.
It's the, who's the singer?
Jan Arden.
Jan Arden, and it's almost verbatim.
They'd watch that video, and that's what they think.
And I'm like, really?
We should see if Jan Arden wants to come on.
I'm, oh man,
if I need,
sure,
sure.
Why not?
Yep.
I mean, at the end of the day,
I look at the referendum.
I'm like,
I,
you know,
I think it was Chess Crosby
in my last interview
or maybe the interview
before that.
He's like,
well, it's not even a,
you know,
it's basically a referendum
see if you have a referendum.
Mm-hmm.
Right?
Like, when you,
when you take that out of it,
you're just like,
listen, folks.
You got nothing to lose by saying.
You got nothing to lose by
saying, yeah, we want a referendum.
I mean, that's what
300 plus 1,000
Albertans signed on to in the beginning.
700,000. Wow.
Sure. 700,000.
Albertans have said
they want this. So go out and allow
them to have it.
And then maybe some things can actually
start to change. Because I
you know, like
there's a lot of
there's just a lot of
strange things going on in Canada right now.
look at the hassle you had to do to get a new vehicle.
Yeah.
And I guarantee you that isn't the first time something like that's happened.
Guaranteed not.
And the fact that there's a really simple solution,
and it's just get a copy of the Alberta inspection
and get a mechanic in Newfoundland to do it,
that's the solution,
is you just have to give them a PDF.
Fuck, you could even probably send them with fax.
I bet you everybody in Newfoundland still has fax machines.
You just fact.
them the form that's it the hardest part about that is going to be to find a fax
machine in Alberta but if you can find a fax machine in Alberta you have solved
that entire problem that put you out days and the flight and all the fuel to drive
back and all of that and all you have to do is just get somebody from Newfoundland
to fill out the Alberta form and that's it that's it and it goes away and
that is just the most Canadian thing I can imagine.
A simple solution looking you dead in the eye and a bureaucrat telling you to fuck off at the same
time.
I know how we're going to end this.
We're going to flip over to Substack.
Even though we don't have any video, we could still do Jack's bonus questions.
So what we're going to do is the 10 bonus questions on Substacks.
We'll pause.
And if you want to hear Tews' answers, because I didn't do this with you.
I don't think I had these when I left.
No.
And so...
You just started doing them as you got on the road.
So we'll pause and we'll go over to Substack if you want to hear 10 bonus questions with Mr. Toos.
Have you figured out these bonus questions ahead of time?
Like are you just going off the cuff?
No, I got the list.
Okay.
Where did you get the list from?
Me and Jack made them?
Okay.
All right.
So if you're still listening, Substack, where Toos will probably interrupt some more on the 10 bonus questions.
I just wanted to know.
Whatever.
