This is Viva Fry.
You're listening to the Sean Newman podcast.
Welcome to a Brothers Roundtable minus J.
This has been so impromptu.
You know?
So first, we're going to do this.
Okay?
Another Brothers Roundtable, I got Dustin and Harley sitting in here with me.
They've been both laughing at me because I've been messing around with lights as we get this thing going.
Because the work never stops folks in the studio.
We're trying to get it just picture perfect.
So that when we do get video on absolutely everything, we'll all look our.
best selves but we're going to start with be able to see my third coin going on the talk do you see
there's no video proof hey harold okay so people at home if you're not listening i'm about to get my
third coin and for the record the brothers outside of dustin have two coins combined that's correct
we've done this five weeks now and the silver coin to dustin silver gold bowl one ounce silver coin
to dust harles how many you got of those i plead the fifth hmm hmm harold's with a big whopping zero
Jay, Sean, each with one.
And Dustin for the third time.
I think Harley's got as many coins as the playoff games for the flames this year.
Big old goose egg.
Okay.
So this is where we're going to start because we only got about 20 minutes today.
We're going to be nice, quick, to the point for all you lovely listeners.
This is not going to be the Newman brothers going on and on and on and on.
So we're going to start here, okay?
I'm going to play the phone call I had with Jay.
He is going to take his prediction on who he wants.
and just so people realize what the bet is this week.
The bet this week is game ones.
We're each going to take one team to win,
which is obviously going to get him as two winners.
Nobody can take the same team twice.
And then whoever scores more, that's the same.
Whoever gives up the least amount,
if that's the same, then who scores the game winner first.
So here's Jay.
I'm going New York Rangers.
Why are you going New York Rangers?
Because they've been hot coming out at the start of both their first two series.
Okay, and what's the score you're taking?
It doesn't matter, right?
No, because it tie break.
No, no, no.
The tie break is, so let's say the Rangers win and the orders win and you take the order, Sean,
so then whoever scored the most goals between the two teams.
Okay.
So my team 1-5-1 and your team won 4-3, I scored one more goal I win.
If they both scored four, then it's at least they give up.
And then if they both tied that, then whoever got the game winner first.
First.
Okay, sounds good.
So Jay's got the Rangers.
Jay's got the Rangers.
All right, boys, there you have it.
Jay has the Rangers.
What say you?
Who gets to go next?
Oh, I guess that would be me.
That would be me.
And, oh, man, I can't believe I'm going to do this, but I'm going to take Dallas at home.
Wow.
Da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
I am going to go with a hot Bobrovsky.
so I am going the Florida Panthers.
So I get the oil?
Wow, this is perfect for me.
Emmington Oilers to Dust, Jay with the Ranger, Sean with Dallas,
and Harley with the Florida Panthers.
This should be an interesting week.
I'm still going to be cheering my heart out for the Emmettiners.
Let's talk about the Emmettin Oilers.
They go back to Skinner after Pickard played very, very well.
What were your thoughts?
I know this is kind of beaten a dead horse,
but the last time we talked
we were saying they had to start Pickard
which they did which we were all impressed with
they go in they win game four
he plays game five the only reason they're even in the
conversation is because of
Calvin Pickard and yeah
and then of course we all know
what happened in
in game
I put it out on the group text that I understood
why they went back to Skinner
and it doesn't surprise me
and maybe it was the right move in the end
but he did not look good at the start of game six
I didn't think he looked sharp
all and his comments after game seven I was like uh sounds like he's trying to you know
convince himself prove to himself that I look I can balance I'm a bounce back goalie and he
he still makes me nervous and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Pickard again at some point
yeah I agree I agree yeah they I know why they had to go with Pickard and I'm happy that they
went back with Skinner because long term Pickard isn't your goalie so you're going back with
the guy that hopefully he can find it and regain it himself.
And I mean, for now, anyways, this is the goalie that you're running with right now.
So I would like to point out the Clonnie, we've done the Pink Cup two weeks in a row,
but the Clonnie Pink Cup guy didn't show up.
So Jay didn't show up.
Isn't that the second time he's had the Pink Cup?
It is the second time he's had the Pink Cup.
Starting to see a trend there.
Starting to see a trend.
You know, I got to bring up.
I feel bad for Vancouver fans, you know, on this side of things.
Brock Besser, not being in the lineup, not being in the lineup because of blood clots.
And the audience can't see me, but I'm leaning across the table here because I'm going...
Blood clots?
Blood clots?
We're talking about blood clots?
Yeah, we're talking about blood clots.
Nothing to see here.
Nothing to see.
I felt bad for him.
I mean, you know, good on the others for winning, but to lose arguably your number one of your top.
Yeah, top two players on the team, right?
Top three.
That's tough.
And then to be blood clots of all things.
You know, we were talking about, like, what the heck?
You come off the ice and they're like, we got to check you.
Like, you wonder what?
Obviously, there's something there.
Something he came off.
Who was it that had blood clots a few years ago?
Played with Crosby.
There was another guy.
It was one of his wingers.
And he missed a bunch of time because of that as well.
I can't remember his name, though.
It was before Gensel, winger for Crosby.
Pascal Dupuy?
De Pui.
Retirement because of blood clot?
condition.
Yep.
I didn't realize it.
That was in,
but that's a while back.
That's 2015.
Yes.
I just remember that one off the top of my head because he was,
like he was a decent player,
played on Crosby's wing and ended up retiring because of it.
Yeah,
obviously they must have some protocol.
Like something must have been off.
You know,
when I texted Scott Marsland,
who's been on the podcast lots,
he said,
oh, it's going to be shortness of breath,
pain, swelling.
And he listed off like six or seven things.
He's like,
it's going to be one of these things.
And in the playoffs,
especially with the high performance,
athletes, they're going to be monitoring a whole bunch of things.
But, I mean, that to come out right before game seven, holy crow.
Well, and quite honestly, what was funny is Vancouver played so well in game five.
Like, they played unbelievably well.
The Oilers had nothing.
But if you look in Game Six and Game Seven, the Oilers flipped it totally on them and totally
dominated all.
That was surprising to me because I watched Game 5.
I'm like, holy crap, we're going to lose in six.
I mean, they just dominate.
And I knew going into Game 6, you're going to be back home, your backs against the wall.
I know you're going to play better, but man, they looked like a beat dog.
But the final two games, other than the little run Vancouver had in game seven,
Oilers absolutely dominated them.
So I think there's one thing about game seven that I noticed that changed things on their bottom two lines.
And that was Corey Perry's in a lineup.
And I like Corey Perry.
The problem is that you need guys who get to the puck fast and battle for the puck.
And Corey Perry's isn't that fast anymore.
And so they brought in a guy, a younger guy that battles for the puck more.
Carrick played.
I'm not sure exactly.
You know, they were kind of moving guys around a little bit,
but Perry was out and they had someone who was battling for the Paw Carter.
It's all the dependent on who you're playing, right?
Could I see Perry coming back in against Dallas?
Yes, Dallas is going to be a very physical team.
And to have Perry back in there, do you need the same kind of speed?
You're looking for an agitator?
I could see them putting him back in probably on a bit of a shorter lease flow as well.
I liked Carrick.
Carrick was a nice addition.
Because he's the guy who drew in for Perry.
There's two guys on the Oilers that have troubles getting to the puck quick enough.
And that one is Perry and the other is Kane.
Although Kane's probably a little bit quicker getting there.
He's slow to get moving fast.
And when he gets there, he run over guys.
But Perry is just the age where he's having troubles keeping up in my books.
And that's the problem with him.
And I think that's why going with a younger guy like Carrick,
who just gets in there and battles.
That's all you're looking for in going to do.
The only way that Eminton has won in this series is if they get some five-on-five scoring
and they got to find it from somewhere, whether that's Hyman, whether that's Kane.
Well, Dylan Holloway's here looking good.
Like he slotted in with dry-siddle and...
Fogel?
No, cane.
Dricedil and Kane.
And like he looks good.
And the Oilers did something that I talked about in the last podcast where they put
two of their speedier guys together, which is Fogel and McLeod on the third line.
And that line was tough to deal with because they were so bloody fast.
the biggest thing I think is you're not winning if you don't start scoring on five on five
power plays rate like Dallas has got a good penalty kill so I mean that is going to nullify
a little bit there for sure but I mean if you're not scoring five on five and Dallas is one of
the top five on five scoring teams so it's whether there's a lot of penalties or there's not
really, and that's going to be pretty much the tail of it.
I'll go the other way on you.
Game six, they scored all five, five on five.
Didn't score a power play goal for two straight.
They finally got back on the board in game.
The game winner was a power play goal in game seven.
And I go, in order to beat Dallas, their power plays got to get back to what it was doing,
and that was scoring goals.
And saying that, five on five, 100%.
But you got to make it so, because what's Dallas going to do?
They're going to come in and bully you.
Like, they're a big team.
And if the Oilers play like they can,
that takes some of the teeth out of them
because you don't want to step across the line
because then they only go on the power play, they do it, they do.
So if you've got a team that wants to lean on you,
how do you combat that speed?
When I look at the Oilers, though,
like everyone's talking about, oh, Dallas Deep, all this, that.
And I go, yeah, but if you got a line with McDavid on it
and a line with dry saddle on it,
you're talking about two players that are two of the top scoring players
of all time in the playoffs.
You've got two lines like that,
and now you've got a third line with fast guys
that cause chaos.
on a fourth line that works hard.
That is a tough team to play against in general.
Don't matter which way you slice this,
this is going to be a good series.
Okay.
So let's flip gears here for a second
because we only got about 10 minutes
and then we'll let everybody on with their day.
We'll let you guys on with your day.
Florida, New York Rangers, A,
just before we get to that,
I thought Carolina, you're like, oh,
what a heartbreaker.
To be up 3-1 going into the third chance
to push it and...
Carolina just resigned Brindamore too,
there is that.
He's been a good coach.
He's made it to the second or third round
like the last, what, five, six years in a row?
And they're a good team.
They are a good team.
Like, I don't know if they got enough firepower
to go over the top is the only problem,
but they're a really good team.
Well managed, well coached.
Which pushes you to the Rangers, Florida.
That should be, should be a great series.
Should it not?
Absolutely.
I think it's going to be a short series.
You think?
Really?
You think Rangers are going to dust them up or you think Florida?
I think Florida is winning him five.
Wow.
Interesting.
That is interesting.
I think Florida is an absolute juggernaut, and I think that the Rangers aren't as good as what they appear to be.
So I think Florida is going to roll.
Well, the thing with the Rangers is they rely heavily on Chesterucan.
Yes.
I mean, Carolina proved that all through the games, right?
I think both teams rely on their goaltending quite a lot.
But Rovsky is well.
Yeah.
I just look at the Rangers top the bottom.
like out of all the teams in the playoffs they're they're the one that scared me the most
I think they're like their defense is great their forwards are great their gold
or Florida sorry I don't know who I said defense and goaltending are great and their forwards are
great so I'm I eat my words because I picked the Tampa Bay Lightning to knock Florida off and I
watched that series and I went oh oh this is this isn't the same Florida team I remember so my
son was very disappointed because he picked Sean's team for him this year for the first time
ever and he was all Tampa Bay and I'm like but this isn't going to go well for you he's like
No, no, they could win.
I'm like, they could win.
They're a good team.
They're just.
They're just not a great team anymore.
Well, like I've been saying this, Florida is a great team.
Florida is a wrecking ball.
Here's the thing.
Florida two years ago won the President's trophy, and last year they went to the Stanley Cup
finals.
There are a really, really good team.
Well, and you look at the Emmetton Oilers on the flip side.
Been to the Western Conference finals now twice in three years.
Well, and two years ago, they lost to Colorado, the Cup champs.
And last year, they lost the Vegas Cup champs.
So Eminton's a really good team as well.
And then you guys.
Dallas who went to a cup finals not that long ago.
Rangers that are the President's trophy winner.
Right. So you got four teams?
They're also one of the best power play units right behind the Oilers, right?
Like, you look at that power play.
No one's just behind the Oilers.
What are the Oilers running out in the playoffs for God's sake?
Can you look that up?
I want everybody to pick their Stanley Cup finalists because mine are still alive.
I went three for four out of the last round,
and my Stanley Cup finalists are alive.
Right now, the four teams that I had picked to be here are all still here.
Okay.
So my two teams that I had originally moving on were Eminton and the Rangers.
All right.
Sean, are you still alive?
I'm still live with my cup winner.
I had the Eminton Oilers playing Carolina.
And so now on the other side, I'm pulling for the New York Rangers because Vance Crow has been chirping me nonstop about the New York Rangers.
and I want nothing more that it would be
Eminton, New York, so the Emmington Oilers
can roast them and I can
just rub it in his face. In fairness, to
Vance Curl, he texted me saying
they were sitting at a family supper
before family supper at his in-laws
and they had the Rangers game on, and he said that would
never ever happen except for the
draft. And you know, speaking of that, I'm going to bring up
the NHL
bracket here and see who's
leading because we do have
Harley's got to be right up there if he picked
all four conference final
Yeah.
For the record, I picked Eminton, Florida, was my two teams right from the beginning, so.
So in other words, what you're saying is, is you've got to be right there.
Yeah, but I picked Carolina beat the Rangers, so I picked three out of four because I picked Dallas.
Okay, here we go.
And I don't know if anyone's watching the Don's Cup, but...
JR is in first.
I'm in second.
And I'm not too far behind.
Croft is tied for second.
Kobe is in fourth.
Number one is Brent.
Jay is in fifth.
Dave is in sixth.
There's a bunch of those guys that are toast.
You're in seventh.
Harles, there's a bunch of guys that are toast.
Number one is Wien's 19, so Brent or Brian, not sure.
And he has, and he picked all four right.
He's got Emmington beating Dallas, New York Rangers, beating Florida.
And his champion is the Amminton Oilers over the New York Rangers.
That's who's in first in the bracket.
In number two, Mr. Iceman, that'd be Harald.
and you have Emmington.
You picked all four correct in the Amminton Oilers over the Rangers as well.
Where do I sit?
Dust.
I can't be too far down.
Three for four.
Dust you were sitting in ninth.
With Emmington over the...
Eminton over Florida.
You got three of four still in.
I pull up in eighth is AMC.
That's Drew McKay.
He has got Emmenton over Florida as well.
He's got the same bracket roughly as you.
A few extra points on the board.
Dead last.
because I know we all care if we go to the bottom.
It's looking like Amanda Cupa is going to run away with it.
Although she's still got the Emmett's Noilers, if they were to win the cup,
which means who's right above her?
Come on, computer, come on, computer.
Get me down there.
Amanda Cooper sitting just above her is Joseph Morningwood's bracket.
And here, let's take a look and see who could get dead last.
The only team he had left was Florida.
he had Vegas, Carolina, and the finals.
He had a Vegas in Nashville in the semifinals.
So there is a chance that the others win.
We could have a different second or dead last player.
So there you go.
That's the brackets with three minutes to go here before I let you out of here.
A nice quick Brothers roundtable today to make sure we got one in.
Any other final thoughts on anything going on in the leagues?
Are we going to get Adam Henrique back?
I don't know.
I haven't heard about him.
Haven't.
Haven't heard.
His ankle, right?
Has anybody been paying attention to the World Cup, like the hockey?
Wait a minute.
If Henry comes back, who does he take out?
Does he go back with McDavid?
I think you got to.
But who you're bumping down that?
But who you, well, the problem is, is Holloway's been playing so good.
That's right.
I don't think you move Holloway off your icetles line.
So maybe that's why he hasn't come back in.
Well, trying to get him time.
He's healthy.
You bring him back in.
You're bringing him back in.
It's just a question of where do you put them?
Maybe your third line with the two speedy guys.
The thing about speed is it covers up for a lot of mistakes or it just papers over everything.
Because if you get to the puck fast or you get back fast, you can cover up anything that goes wrong.
Here, we were talking about, while you guys looked that up, here we were talking about top power play percentages in the playoffs.
Oh, this is season though.
This says season.
Here's the season.
Can't find the...
Because what are the Oilers running in the playoffs?
They've got to be like 40% or something.
Well, 37.5, 36.7 was the Colorado Avalanche.
31.4 is the Rangers.
That's got to be playoffs because...
It has to be, right?
Regular season, no one was 37%.
So 37.5 is the Oilers.
36.7 was Colorado.
They're toast.
The Rangers at 31.4.
Dallas stars at 29.
So Dallas is at a solid.
And then you've got to go down, down.
Panthers, 22.
to, uh, Henrique practiced Wednesday, uh, due to an ankle injury.
The sustaining game seven of, of L.A. He hasn't, didn't play all the last series.
They are expecting him back in, at some point in the Dallas series.
Well, you think what, at what point do you put him in? Probably when you're down a game or two.
Well, yeah, you're, yeah. Well, it's, it's like, if he's not, if they're saying that, he isn't healthy, right?
So you're not going to put him in game once. You're going to give him as much time.
You went, you sweep it. He ain't playing in game.
Series 3. If you're in a battle and you need a guy,
inslide, Henrik. Either way, boys,
I look forward to seeing the game 1s now. Excited tonight,
game one of Rangers, Florida, Tomorrow, Oilers, Stars.
Owen and I are heading to Game 4.
Just thought I'd let you guys know.
Look at you go. That'll be exciting.
All right, fellas, get out of here.
To all you lovely folks, we'll catch up to you next week.
