This is Viva Fry.
I'm Dr. Peter McCullough.
This is Tom Lomago.
This is Chuck Pradnik.
This is Alex Krenner.
Hey, this is Brad Wall.
This is J.P. Sears.
Hi, this is Frank Paredi.
This is Tammy Peterson.
This is Danielle Smith.
This is James Lindsay.
Hey, this is Brett Kessel, and you're listening to the Sean Newman podcast.
Welcome to the Sean Newman podcast.
I'm waiting for Dustin.
I keep smacking his left.
We just jammed in lunch here before we start the first Brothers Roundtable of the new, well, of 2025.
We did two months, basically last year of these kind of impromptus, get the brothers together, talk some sports, and with the NHL playoffs coming, you know, what is it?
Next week it starts, next weekend.
Well, Thursday here, so what do we do?
Or is it this weekend?
On Thursday, tomorrow is the last day of the regular season.
So I'm guessing Saturday, I would imagine.
I'm just really glad this year that we get to add Calgary Flames talk into the playoff discussion.
Sorry, flames.
I would pick the flames to go all the way if it meant it silver dollar.
But the problem is I can't get them to get there.
So it's a real tough one.
They go down 3-1 last night to Vegas and then found a way to claw their way back to a 5-4 win.
You know what I thought, though, is it's got to be tough because you're battling there.
It is a good young team in it.
And you know what?
To give them some kudos with Dustin Wolf and the Net, they're going to be a good team next year.
I think he's legit.
I do got to give a shout out to Marty Bose who was talking about all the soft Oilers who were injured and not playing right now.
And I might have made the comment that I didn't think most Flames players would be playing game one of the playoffs either.
But, uh,
you know what's funny though?
In the past,
I can remember this with the Oilers.
There's the same Blackhawks beat the Canadians the other day, right?
The teams that are out of it have the young guys playing.
And the young guys are playing for jobs and contracts and they're playing hard.
So they got all the skills stuff and everything.
The guys that have made it, they're ready.
vets it's no big deal and so everybody gets excited about their team oh look at the
black hawks the black hawks are rolling the flames are coming right and then next year starts
and it's the same old sad sack buffalo sabers and flames did have a hot start this year remember
you're like oh god the oilers are going to make flames are going to be the prison's trophy
winners nope not quite i think the sabers are 14 years now so it's been a while it's been
longest in sport history not in sport major major sports 14 years is
the oilers miss.
10.
It's been close to that.
It's 10.
Maybe it's the NHL then.
Maybe.
I feel like Harley's going to look it up.
I feel like I'm going to look it up.
How many years did the Browns not make it?
Like it feels like they went a long time as well.
14 years long time.
We're talking about not making the playoffs, not winning the Cup, not making the playoffs.
How many years the Maple Leafs not make it past the first round now?
Well, didn't they make it pass the first round here the other day?
Yeah, they made it pass first round.
Last year, two years ago or something?
They made it second round.
Welcome to the Brothers Roundtable where we say a bunch of things.
We're like,
we've got to be last year.
Right on the other year,
everybody will be on their phones and there will be just constant silence here.
This is all memory.
Yeah, this is right.
I'm picking the Arizona guys to go all the way.
Well, and in fairness, Jay probably does know the answer
because out of any of the brothers, he stumped the Schwab.
He could have went on there and actually won, I think.
It's funny because people ask me a year-round.
When's the Brothers Roundtable coming back?
When's the Brothers Roundtable coming back?
Because out of all the episodes I do, as you can imagine, with the election coming and everything and talking a ton of politics.
Yet, so with all the episodes I do, it has the smallest share of people who listen, but the most active all year round.
The people who listen to this show will be yelling at the radio the entire time, you bunch of idiots.
And the flames chat really started off.
Is it going to set a whole bunch of people off?
I could already hear the phone, starting a ding, you know?
And the Leafs, right?
The Leafs fan are going to be dire, the Leafs fans.
The Flays fan are always kind of a little bit of winers.
I mean, if Montreal squeaks.
I mean, how is it?
The French debate is tonight.
And because of the Montreal Canadiens game, they moved the debate earlier.
That's the power of the Montreal Canadians have right now.
That's a big game.
Are they going to make it?
Just a side note.
Just a side note.
Buffalo Sabers have the longest active playoff series win drought at 17 seasons
and also the longest active postseason appearance road at 13 seasons.
A league record.
A league record.
League record.
So who was in major sports in North America?
Who has the record?
I haven't got that far.
One thing at a time here.
Are we going to talk playoffs?
We're going to talk?
No, we're going to talk for...
Let's talk Ovetchen breaks the record.
Last year we talked about this, whether we thought he was going to do it.
And then he, you know, and then he comes on this year, he's like, lights out.
Then he gets hurt.
And everyone's like, ah, maybe another.
air and then he gets healthy and then he just like I don't ask me the other day do you think
he's taking steroids I would hope he turned he turns 40 here in September I would hope so
he has a break broken leg that he comes back from in like what was it six weeks he scores 42
this year I don't know turning it's 30 this year he scores 42 would you put it past the Russians
well and I'm just like he's you you look at his last few goals you know because I was watching
for the end. Everybody wants to go. It's empty netters.
And it's, you know, his goals
have been legit, shoot the puck through
the goalie, like he's done his whole career.
It's unbelievable. He has not faded
one bit. No. Well, if you watch him, though,
he does this, like,
loop, goes to the same spot,
waits for the puck, he doesn't get it.
He goes, sits on the bench.
They pretty much have a chair for him there where he just sits.
Right at the door. Right. Right. Okay.
He looks like a great, actually, he looks like a
great rec hockey player. He really
does. You know,
where he goes out for a shift,
kind of doodles around the neutral zone,
gets into his spot in the offensive zone,
either gets his chance or not,
comes off the ice, like Sean says,
just right at the door, sits down, right?
Waits, as soon as his turn, goes up.
Like, I don't know if he really sees his own zone that much.
Like, he looks like a wreck hockey,
like a really,
what I consider a really top-end wreck hockey player
who kind of hangs around that red line
and gets the puck and makes things happen.
He waits for four guys to do the work on the ice,
and then he sets himself up,
and when they give it to him, he hammers that thing.
But he's not a small guy.
Like, you're talking to 45, I think, is what they say.
He weighs, right?
Oh, yeah, he's a big man.
So there's a lot of power behind the shots.
So the craziest stat, other than him breaking the record for goals,
is that by the end of it all, he might have the all-time goal record plus the all-time hit record and then HL, which is absolutely crazy.
It is crazy.
The ultimate definition of a power forward.
I will point out that the game he was breaking, I can't.
I can't remember who one of the announcers was, but it was a former goaltender.
And he said that one of the things about a vetchkin shot, though, is that it's not flat.
So when a vetch can shoot, it's heavy and it's hard, and it has this little bit of a movement to the puck.
And that's why it always seems to be going through goalies is it seems to weevil through there.
It's how I score most of my goals.
There's a little wobble when it comes off my stick.
I don't think it's quite as hard, Dost.
You know, Dustin scores all of his goals with his speed.
If he ever slows down, he's in real trouble.
That's totally true.
Mark Andre Fleury.
Retires.
Retiring.
Retiring.
It's just been cool to watch, actually, the last few weeks here.
You know, they're playing in Washington.
OV pulls all the people that are walking down the hallway to come back out to make sure that they're shaking hands.
Last night, they throw them out there in the third period and doing a double pad stack.
Not needed.
still pulling one out, right?
They end up going overtime.
They win in overtime and everybody's super happy for him.
Just like one of those guys in the league that everybody just feels good about, right?
All the other teams, the top players from everywhere else, you know, he was obviously beloved around the league.
And it's a really cool just to watch, right?
Some guys don't get that whatsoever, right?
My daughter's favorite hockey player because he's called the flower.
She knows no other hockey player
He'll go down
He's a really good goaltender
That won a couple cups
I find it's interesting in his career
Because
You know
If Pittsburgh would do everything over again
When they just keep
Mark Andre?
You know what I mean?
Probably
And he goes to Vegas
And he has some great
You know
They go the finals with him
And everything else
And then he shipped out
And then Vegas wins a cup
Like he had a couple of tough moments
There for how good of a guy
And a teammate he is
And everybody loves him
My only regret, not regret, because I have no control over it,
is when bag is shipped them out and they were giving them away,
the Oilers should have snapped that up.
And everyone will go, oh, they can't because the same division, blah, blah,
I'm like, come on, they were begging for somebody to take them,
and you would have just had to, you know, make the deal a little sweeter to give them to you.
I bet you if you go back on a round table, you can bring that out.
Well, to me, he would have been great in the locker room for the Oilers,
young team, McDavid, dry sidle.
They needed a goalie who could battle.
instead they got Mike Smith, right?
Like, yeah.
Logan Kachir.
Yeah, great career, 36 years old,
hurt his hip, and he's done.
And there's another guy that he played his whole career with San Jose.
Went to the finals once.
Had all them good teams, could never get a cup.
Just funny.
And we talk about this as the brothers, right?
You just never know when that time comes, right?
And you hope we all sit here and play with each other
until we're, you know, until Jay's 80s and Sean 70, right?
But all it takes is one bad fall.
God, we'll be hacking each other bad by then.
And you go back to Coachura played for a bunch of good teams.
Never did win a cup.
And that's the way it works.
You think of like some of that Vancouver team that was good all those years,
you go back to Ottawa being good for all those years and never won a cup.
No, and then you take the Newman team that goes in the charity event.
They win all three games and beat Bucky's team.
So, I mean, anything, you know.
Some guys are just born to win.
He's had that tournament for, what is it? Play it forward?
This is the fourth year, I think.
For the fourth year, for the listener in Lloyd, there's a charity tournament.
Aaron Buckingham helps, well, runs it.
They've raised lots of money.
I think he's over 300 grand he's raised.
So it's been a great.
They put together, they buy vans and vehicles to take people to have medical appointments that.
Hamilton, Saskatoon, all over the place.
I think he said last year they put on 300 and some thousand kilometers.
They've ran four turns.
tournaments and the newmans have played in three and the newmans have won three and the best part
about it is though is we played the rogers in all of those three and we beat them every time
that's probably you know only missing this year i was like you guys win yeah we won
rogers on the other side yep perfect perfect sorry rogers it's great um but before we get into
playoffs blue jays i i had my thoughts
on what the Blue Jays are going to be
and look like everything else.
I watch them right now and I'm like
I don't know who half their team is.
Doesn't I feel like and yet they're fun to watch?
But doesn't feel like last year
they have all these high expectations
they're carrying it around all year
and they just, you know, it's not like they were terrible
last year but it just and this year there's just
no expectations.
Oh, it's the Yankees, it's the Dodgers,
it's the Mets, it's all these other teams
it's whatever with the Js
and all of a sudden they get Vladdy signed
and they have that their core piece
locked in.
they've slowly built their pitching over the last few years
and there's no pressure on it and here they are.
You know, if someone offered me a half a billion,
I think I might hold out for a little more.
I actually like some of their new guys
that they've brought in and the pitching.
Like, I'm not going to say that they're one in the MLB,
but they're silently good.
this year, I think, compared to...
Well, just think, after they trade away,
what's the catcher that I can't think of right now?
Marino.
Which was one of the worst trades they've ever made.
Just think of how hard we've been on the Jays.
And it's early, but you watch them,
and now they get Vladdy signed, and they've just been, I don't know.
But why can't they win at Harls?
You know, when you look at this team...
They're a fun team.
They're a fun team.
They now have that two, three, four, five hitters that can actually hit.
They got some power down in the middle with Bixirles.
up San Tanner.
San tender.
Right?
Their pitching is so much better than it was three or four years ago.
Very consistent.
Like they can throw at stars.
Berrios used to be the starting pitcher, like number one pitcher in Minnesota.
Gosman used to be number one in San Fran.
Like you're starting.
Right?
Scherzer now is there.
If he can get help.
Like you go, but why can't these guys all of a sudden get into the playoffs and beat the Yankees or beat some of these guys?
Like, I don't know.
They're there.
Maybe pick up a deadline deal, right?
Relievers is my only concern.
But yeah, really.
That's the hole in their team.
I don't know.
But they'll be fun.
This is the most Blue Jays ball I've watched.
It's just nice.
I don't know what it is with the kids, but they're really in the ball.
So, you know, the Blue Jays games on.
We sit and watch Blue Jays.
They're asking a thousand questions.
And so you get to sit and watch them Blue Jays games.
And I don't know, so far, even their relievers have impressed me.
Their closer impresses me.
Like, you know.
They're just a fun team to watch.
I think of last year, last year there was a lot of expectation.
This year they're coming in where there's not the same expectation.
No, they're not expected to do anything.
Right.
It's not to be awful.
And so I think that's why I enjoy it more right now is because it's, the expectation isn't there.
So now they're feeling like they're trying to find themselves here and it's fun to watch.
Tell they trade Kirk, though, the marino thing sits there in your stuff.
Still stings.
They once they trade Kirk and everybody kind of forgets about it,
because they picked Kirk over Marino in my mind, right?
Once Kirk's gone, everybody else start to forget about it.
But it kind of just sticks in your crow.
It's funny.
We were talking with Talibir, Bert, and we were talking about baseball players
and how him and his son were running to get in shape for baseball trouts.
And I kind of laughed.
I'm like, Bert running?
I know.
Told Nash, son.
I'm like, go watch the Blue Jays in Alejandro Kirk and tell me you need to be in shape to play baseball.
That guy is my size, but has what?
Like, how heavy is he?
I think he's listed at 5-8-2-60.
The ball made a pass him the other night,
and I'm like, like, that guy, 260?
How does that ball get past?
He's 260?
That's what he's listed out.
I don't know.
Maybe he's lost a couple of LBs.
I don't think so.
I watch him running around, and I'm like,
why aren't you?
Like, really?
Well, the problem you got with him a little bit is he's a decent hitter,
but he needs to hit 300 to be in the lineup,
because if he gets,
on bag, it's like now one.
Yeah.
He is a munchkin.
Like that guy, you watch him and you're like,
that's why people think baseball's not a serious sport.
So what you're saying is there's still a chance.
There's still a chance.
Holy mack it off.
Can we get to playoffs already?
Jets.
They win the president's trophy.
Thoughts on the Jets quickly.
They had a good year.
They've been solid all year.
Honestly, there is, like Dallas just has gone on a
Sixth game losing streak.
Oilers obviously had a setback there.
Same with Colorado.
A lot of the top teams, Florida, went through their struggles for parts of the season.
Winnipeg didn't.
Winnipeg was very consistent all year round.
Kind of that boring team at a where nobody wants to be.
But they do have the best goal tender to league from the net out again.
And maybe the most unharalded top line score.
Did you have on your bingo card or your predictions?
Winopeg Jets being at 114 points with a game to go so they could get to 116.
And number two, behind them, the Washington Capitals.
I'll guarantee you I did not have Washington anywhere close to that.
I didn't think Washington would make the playoffs.
Neither did I.
No, no, no, did I.
Like, they have been a great story.
I think, quite honestly, both those teams overachieved in the regular season,
and I don't see them going that far in the playoffs.
But I'm happy for them.
They had great regular seasons.
You know, the only thing is, it's so.
hard going in the playoffs because one of the thing is Winnipeg's big and they've been around and they got a
really good goal tender and if Halibach decides to step up and play really well they are going to be a
tough out and if you look at Washington they're a very big team and their defense is really good
and we talk about at noon hour hey usually the team with the better defense wins and not to mention
goaltending and right they've got the Washington's got good goaltending and they got a really good
defense and you go
and they're big up front
like they're big that pro tosses is six six
they got Tom Wilson like they're not
Ovechkin I mean
and Ovechkin at 39
will be running around that place
like he's 22 really not this could be his last playoffs
I'm not sitting here saying Washington and Winnipeger
meeting in the finals I'm just saying they're just
not easy outs yeah yeah the other thing is
like Logan Thompson like and this still
bothers me why Canada
never throws Logan Thompson
but 31, 6 and 6,
249 goals against average, 9-10, save percentage.
Like, you've got to have a good goalie in playoffs, right?
Okay, well, Dustin keeps saying playoffs.
Not going to playoffs, we're going to talk to playoffs.
All right, we'll talk to playoffs.
Oilers health then.
Before we do predictions, you go,
Oilers get within a game winning the Stanley Cup to go down 3-0,
they come all the way back, they lose it in game seven,
So you go, next year is going to be our year.
They, you know, let Broberg and Holloway, and then they got Skinner and they got, you know, all these different.
Warren Fogeloft.
And then they, you know, they trade for some guys and, you know, and on and on and on.
And here we are looking at the playoffs against L.A. again.
So here, let's, I want to break it down a little bit for you.
Sure.
So compared to last year, because like you say, they went to game seven of the finals, right?
They have the exact same goaltending.
Skinner's a year older.
So in reality, your goaltending should be the same.
same they had last year in playoffs. On defense, they actually have replaced Echholm with, or sorry,
they replaced Broberg with Walman, but Echholm's out the first round. So that's the big miss there.
But in reality for that defense, they're the same group. They replaced Broberg with Walman.
Now, you can be upset because Broberg's, you know, they let him go as a young guy and this and that,
but that's who, essentially it's the same D, right? And then on forwards, I mean, they, they, they,
Yeah, they let Holloway and Fogel go, and they added Skinner and Arvetson,
but they still have Adam Henrique as their number 3C.
They still got Hyman and Eugene Hopkins.
They, you know, they picked up Pekolzin.
Where is this team at?
Does a Vander Cain come back?
They picked up Frederick.
Is he going to be healthy?
Losing the number 1D is going to hurt Emmington,
but you also can't replace McDavid and Dry Settle.
And so, like, L.A. does have some good scores, but they're not elite like those two.
And so how much of a difference is Dry Sidal and McDavid versus...
Drag Settle played on one leg and put up like 12 points in a series.
Right.
And are they actually really hurt right now?
No.
Because you can't come out and say, yeah, no, we're just resting in the last five games.
So they're going to say, well, no, you know what?
They're just recovering.
This whole injury thing doesn't bother me.
The only one that bothers me is at home because that's a huge loss.
And he's actually hurt and he's not coming back.
Yeah.
The whole, the rest of them resting and being hurt or whatever it is,
they're all going to be playing in the first round.
You know, if Redrick comes back, whatever, it doesn't matter.
I'd like to have him, sure.
But he's not a big part of this.
But is Hyman and Nuge and McDavid and Dryside all going to be back?
Yeah, they're all going to be back and they're going to be resting and ready to roll.
So I'm not worried about that at all.
Echo missing, that hurts because...
So in reality, that's it, though.
Yeah.
You know, when you really slice and dice it from last year to this year, you go, yeah, okay, they lost Fogel who skates fast and bangs and scores 20 goals.
Okay.
Yeah, but he wasn't even playing that.
They don't play us anyhow.
Like David came out and said, guys are healthier than it may seem.
I think we kind of have this aura around us that we're walking around wounded,
but we're just fine.
Everybody's going to be ready to roll.
Except for echo.
It might be the best way to go into playoffs.
Everybody's looking at them like they're about to get trouts and get beat by the LA Kings five nothing, right?
That's the perfect way you want it, right?
An overconfident LA team that just won't.
I don't think LA's overconfident.
Fair enough.
They've got beat how many years in row by the Oilers in the playoffs?
They're not going to be overcomps.
And they know.
They know Dry Saddle and McDavid aren't in the lineup.
They know.
Emmethin's a very veteran-laden lineup.
I'm not saying they're going to win or not.
You're not going to scare them or run them out of the building.
No.
You're just not.
They've been around way to them.
After last year at how dominant they were playing the L.A. King's style a game, too.
I like last year really, I think they're fine this year.
Man, I'd hate to be L.A.
Oh, yeah.
It's like Winnipeg back in the day in the Oilers.
You knew you had to beat the oilers.
Oilers, right?
They never could.
But it's not even the second round.
It's in the first bloody round every year.
You meet the Oilers, and it's got to be groundhog day for them over and over again.
Well, it's just like you like to go in with the best goalie or the best defense.
You like to go in with kind of two of the top five scores in the league, you know, like, McDavid and Drysell, you're walking into a fight with them.
Like, I like my chances.
Yep.
You have predictions?
Sure.
All right.
Let's do first round.
We're going to start with Oilers in L.A.
Since we started talking about it.
Sure.
I suppose I'm supposed to be the one keeping track.
at this though, yeah? Who gets in? Columbus and Montreal? God, I hope Montreal does, but
I'm going to go with Montreal. I want to see a Canadian team in. That's what I want. I agree.
I think Montreal gets into. If they're both tied, who gets the tie break? Well, Columbus will,
because I think Columbus is two points back right now. Columbus has got to win tonight, Montreal's
got to lose tonight, and Columbus will get in. But I'm going to go Montreal because it's a
Montreal's at 89 and Columbus is at 87.
And if Columbus wins, Montreal loses their tie for points.
Columbus gets in.
That has to be it.
Otherwise, Montreal.
Oh, yeah, because they got more wins.
Don't worry, folks.
He'll come along here.
Yeah. You'll get it soon enough.
Actually, I don't think it matters who wins that because I don't think either teams
win in the first round.
All right.
I think Columbus is more dangerous than Montreal in reality.
Yeah, I'd agree with that.
I can't name five players off.
I can't name five players off Columbus, but I'm sure they're more dangerous than Montreal.
Well, Werensky is the second-leaning defense-man score in the league this year.
Wrensky's been great for a long time.
Montreal, just to get that Russian guy out of the KHL there.
Demadoff.
Number five.
Number five, Sean.
That's what number he's wearing.
Who's this?
Demadoff off from Montreal.
Yeah, they had a kid.
Well, he heard Sean Newman wore five, so he threw on time.
Yeah, that's...
If going into playoffs, you're like, we got a shot because we're getting the
top KHL guy to come over to help us, you're probably not winning the first round.
Really?
Well, the winner gets to play Washington.
Yeah.
No, no, I said Washington isn't going far, but they're beating Montreal.
Are they beaten Columbus?
Yeah, probably.
Okay, okay.
Dust, do you want to start?
West, West.
Just the West first round winners.
Are we going to go series by series here and have a discussion as we're going or no?
Yeah, let's do series by series.
All right.
Well, let's start with Emmington because we've already discussed them.
I'm going to go Oilers.
Let's go six games because they're missing at home this year.
I'm also going to go Oilers.
The only thing for me is LA is good at home,
and I believe that Darcy Kemper is playing extremely well for them.
So I too am also going to go six games.
I hate it because I cheer for the O'Hillard.
So you just, is it me wanting them to win?
Do you know what I mean?
When I look at it, I'm going to,
You know, we always talk about the Oilers
and are missing at Kome and their defense.
I'm not huge on the King's defense.
You know, Doughty's okay,
and I like Doughty and everything.
He's facing McDavid and Dry Settle.
That's a big task.
So I'm going to go,
I'm going to go Oilers in five.
That's funny.
That's what I wrote down.
I think Emmerton's going to take the first two in L.A.
That's what I think.
And so you're going to Oilers in Five.
Oilers and F.
Bold prediction cut.
Yeah.
Wow.
Let's all argue.
about it.
Man, isn't that the criticism we get?
If this is your first time listening to our Brothers Roundtable, we despise the Flames,
sorry Flames fans, and we're die-hardt Oilers fans.
So welcome to Oilers talk until they win or lose, you know?
Okay, so what's the other one?
Vegas versus Minnesota.
Minnesota.
I'll go Vegas in this one.
That's probably not a huge surprise.
No, no, no.
What, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Are you sure?
Well, it depends on Minnesota St. Louis are both right there.
No, but the season, they're over.
They're done.
Let me just bring it up here.
No, I got it sitting right here.
Minnesota.
Minnesota plays Vegas.
Yeah.
Minnesota.
Oh, yeah.
Minnesota plays a bit.
They finished at 97 points, Jay.
And St. Louis finished at 96.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So Jets will play St. Louis.
Jets will play St. Louis.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, so Vegas plays Minnesota guys.
No, no worries, folks.
He'll catch up here.
He'll catch up here.
Vegas is really good.
I'm going to go Vegas in five.
Call the upset, Harles.
Vegas and four then.
I was going to go Vegas and five.
I think sometimes everybody thinks this.
I think I'm going to go, I'll go Vegas in 5 too.
I got nothing.
I got no arguments.
And I had Vegas in four.
There we go.
Okay, well, this is really entertaining.
Yeah, we're doing real entertaining.
Okay, Winnipeg versus the St. Louis Blues.
Someone else start this time.
Harley.
Winnipeg and four.
Oh, my God.
I think St. Louis will give him a little more of a push.
I'm going to go Winnipeg and six.
Is Winnipeg banged?
Sorry, is St. Louis banged up?
They're missing Holloway, or is he back?
Holloway they've been missing,
and Thomas left with a small injury.
But I think for the most part, St. Louis is healthy.
And St. Louis does have a very deep death.
They're a bigger team.
A veteran-laden defense.
They're bigger.
And if Bington decides to show up,
it could be a little tougher series and everybody thinks.
I'm going to go Winnipeg and 7.
I'll also go Winnipeg and 7.
I think it's actually going to be a closer series.
and what people think.
There you go.
So now we've picked the same, the same.
Can't wait until we all get a silver coin for being perfectly right.
Okay, now, but this next series is actually where you separate the men from the boys
because Dallas, Colorado, in my mind, is probably the best first round series.
They're awfully close to it in the whole league.
Oh, I agree.
It's a must watch.
Yeah.
Jay, why don't you start then?
Well, I feel like with this that everybody got really excited when Colorado Tradeway
They're ranting and they got neckish,
Nekash, and they picked up
Brock Nelson and them guys.
And so...
Does Landisg play a factor in this?
Is he going to be like a big enough
factor after being gone for so long or not?
You know, it's hard to say.
He's going to come in.
He's still a smart hockey player and he's a leader, right?
I just feel like the only question mark
I have with Dallas, like is Heiskenen gone for
the year?
Or has he come back in the playoffs here?
Because I look at Dallas and I go, that is a deep team.
And so I'm picking Dallas and six.
Myself, I'm going to go Colorado on this one.
And I'll go Colorado in seven.
You've got the best defenseman in the league, one of the top forwards in the league.
One of the top five, for sure.
Yeah.
Well, absolutely.
He might get the heart this year.
Yeah, he'll have a dry saddle.
Sure.
That's what they're talking.
Yeah.
So in my mind, that's a lot to handle.
But at the same time, like Dallas is a freaking good team.
And either of those teams are kind of sewer than they're going to play in the first round.
Very possible, He's going to misses the first round versus the ups.
That's tough for Dallas.
That's tough for Dallas.
But Dallas does have a very deep team for sure.
And who else?
There was some, say again.
Say again, I don't know if he's back or not.
I don't know if he's back either.
I do like Audinger.
I think he gets forgot about.
You know, everybody talked about Hellebuck or Vaseleski or Bobroski.
And I just think Audinger is going to show up here one playoffs and just be the guy.
And why not now?
It's going to be a very emotional series because Rattin and started the year with Colorado's won a cup with Colorado.
And somehow all of a sudden, manage to wind up on Dallas's team.
And everybody says, oh, it's not kind of meshing in that well.
You know what?
We're going to hit the playoffs.
And you got guys like Jamie Benn and.
guys that have been around, you know, they're going to be ready to go.
It's going to be a fun series to watch.
It is.
It's pretty much in my own mind to pick them, but I think I'm going to go with Colorado in seven.
John, what did you pick?
I picked Dallas in seven.
There we are.
I hope that that series goes seven because, like, you look at two teams and you're like, that should be a fun, fun series to watch.
both very talent-rich teams with guys who've been around and won cups and everything else.
Well, in Dallas hasn't won a cup lately, but they did go to the finals.
They went to the finals, right?
And a healthy chunk of that team still intact from then.
They know what it takes.
Yeah.
But they don't have Cory Perry.
That's true.
Okay.
In the east, we'll start with Toronto, Ottawa.
Back to you, Dust, I believe.
I'm going to go with the upset in Ottawa and six.
Wow.
Toronto is the
Toronto Maple Leafs.
I have zero faith in them
that they're all going to show up
and actually put it together.
I think Brady Kachuk
actually messes everything up for them
and his cocky, brash way.
I don't think Ottawa is making it past the second round,
but I'll take Ottawa over Toronto.
And Toronto will do some serious soul searching
after this year,
or naval gazing like they do every year.
I'm going to say Toronto wins this
and six
I
you know
as much as it pains me to say
but to me
I think Toronto has figured a few things out
do I like them long term like you were saying to us
no I do not
but to get past Ottawa
I think they'll manage to
do it this year
Toronto reminds me a little bit of my junior B team
my last year
where in the first
coach
they have better coaching
their coaching's better
they just
Toronto's ready
you know
everybody talks about
how soft they are
and they can't do anything
they can't get it done
I think they walk into Ottawa
and I'm going to say
they sweep them in four straight
and she's a done deal
Ottawa wanted to make the playoffs
they're so happy to make the playoffs
they're a bunch of young guys
and everybody oh you know
Chuck's going to
make a huge difference and they're all going to make a difference.
I think Toronto comes out and just is ready to go.
How much do you think Matthews looks back on the Canada U.S. series and it just still irks them.
And I think there's a be in the bonnet.
If they would have won that, I think it would have deflated them for the playoffs a little
bit, but there's a little bit of added of the shirt.
I think they're tickled pink.
They aren't playing Boston, Tampa.
Somebody, like they're playing the Ottawa,
And I really want Ottawa to win.
I do, because I'm like, that'd be fun to watch Ottawa upset Toronto.
I just look at Toronto.
Like, they don't do it this year.
Like, I mean, you got a team that you don't have to play one of the big boys in the first round.
Yeah.
You should come in a win.
I got them in five.
Because I think actually the longer the series goes favors Ottawa, because then the demons are going to come out for Toronto.
So I think they're going to roll in the first two games, blow them out of the water.
Ottawa wins one at home.
They're happy.
and it finishes up game five in Toronto,
would be my guess.
But that's what I got.
Next series is the Tampa Bay, Florida.
Battle of Florida.
Harley, I guess you get to go first.
I'll pull some of the oldest brother's words out of his mouth.
Until you beat the champ, you are the champ.
So I'm going Florida to beat Florida to beat Tampa.
Florida to beat Florida.
Florida to beat Tampa.
He's not wrong.
He's not wrong.
In six games.
I'm going to be paying attention to this one though because it'll be another fun series to watch.
I agree with Harles.
I think it's a great series.
And you know what it is?
Because there's so many guys left over on Tampa, it's kind of like the champs playing the champs.
Yeah.
You know, and I don't know.
Man, you could see this one go either way.
Would you be surprised to see Florida come out of it?
No.
Would you be surprised to see Tampa come?
No.
No.
So Florida's been resting guys here for the last 10 days.
They have been, neckblads had a long rest.
Is Kachuk and everything back and ready to roll?
It's so hard to know, isn't it?
Like if Kachuk, like you look at Kachuk-Bannett, Marshand,
Barkoff down the middle, Ryan Harser's their score,
a very tough team.
And yet you look at Tampa Bay, and they got a big defense.
And if Bazalowski comes to play,
it is going to be a tight series.
So, well, gold-tending on either side,
You got great goaltending on either side
with Bob Roski on the other side, right?
Yeah, I'm just, I'm going to pick
Tampa Bay and 7.
T Bay and 7.
I look at this series as a team
that used to be really good in Tampa Bay,
and I don't think they're a contender anymore
versus the team that is the absolute best in the NHL,
and I'm going Florida in 5,
because they're the real deal.
I like how you said it best.
A lot of conviction there.
For sure.
You look at the Florida team that won the cup last year.
I learned my lesson for last year.
In the off season.
Anybody remember my Don's Cup from last year?
What I told, Duss's son, Owen?
Shut up telling him.
Thanks for draft my team.
What did you say to them?
We picked Tampa Bay and we went hard on them.
And then they got absolutely shellacked by Florida.
And, oh, the first series they went, Florida went on to win the cup.
So I'm not, I'm going with the champs.
I'm going Florida.
and I'm going to say Florida in,
I think the Tampa Bay Lightning are going to push them,
so I'm going to say Florida in six.
So I do got something to bring up
because the hockey drafts got brought up.
I went three for three on the drafts last year.
I won the kinsman on the back of Florida.
I won the kids got he dropped on the back of Florida,
and I won the Don's Cup on the back of the Emmetton Wethers.
Three for three,
I probably should just.
Heart to be humble. Great.
So you're done with hockey drafts.
Perfect.
So what I'm saying is this year with his picks,
do the opposite.
it. That's what he's saying.
Probably.
There was the stars aligned last year.
Washington versus Montreal or Columbus.
I guess I'm starting.
I just, I'm just going with Washington.
I think Columbus and Montreal are putting in a huge push to make the playoffs.
I think if it's Montreal, it's a bunch of young guys.
They're going to be a hard out.
But I just feel like Washington's built from the net out.
And they're going to, so Washington beats them in five.
I do not love Washington, but I got no faith in Columbus or Monter.
Montreal at all. So I think Washington walks away with this one. I'll go in six games. If it's Columbus, I'll go five of it's Montreal.
Oh, you can go in difference. I'm going five either way, does it. Yeah, I'm going five. I'm going five either way, and that's Washington.
Look at that. All of us, Washington and five. One of the best goaltenders in the league.
Enough said. Which leaves you with your final series boys, the Carolina Hurricanes versus the New Jersey Devils.
Dustin's team.
Oh, it totally is.
And they finally went away from Carolina and finally won a draft.
Hey?
Like, isn't it kind of funny?
You know what's funny about Carolina?
Yeah.
Is they went to the, they've been successful with outwinning the cup for a number of years
where they made the conference final.
So you want to make fun of me?
Yeah, I didn't win drafts of them, but every year we're in the mix, they just can make it
over the hump in the conference final.
Everybody remembers the guy in the mix, eh?
Yep.
Anyhow, with saying all that, I'm going Carolina because I have no faith in the devil's.
And I'll go.
Who's the devil's goaling right now?
Markstrom.
Jacob Markstrom
Hey look
Calgary Flams
Flame fans
We got some reason to talk
Jacob Markstrom
Old Goley of the Flames
Comes over
Does a good job in Jersey
Makes the playoffs
I hate this series honestly
I'm looking at both teams
And I'm going
Like I have no interest
In really watching this series whatsoever
But is New Jersey healthy?
No because they're missing
Jack Hughes
They're missing their number one day
They're number one centerman
And Dougie Helm, Hamilton has been off and on injured.
I don't know if he's back for the playoffs.
But that's why I hate it.
Harley's doppelganger.
No, but have you ever, remember when the Lightning won the cup?
They didn't have a stamp coast the whole time.
Remember that?
Well, remember when Lightning won the Cup?
They didn't have Stamp Coast the whole way.
Yeah.
I'm not saying Jersey's going to win the Cup, but they come in here.
Oh, they don't have Jack Hughes.
Everybody just writes me off.
Well, wasn't it last year they didn't have the goaltending?
Yes.
And they were going through like 18 goaltenders.
Now they got Markstrom.
They're a fun team.
They got a ton of speed.
They're hard to play against, aren't there?
But I feel like Rod the Baud.
He'll get the Carolina boys going.
He's really a good coach.
He's a good coach.
He's a good coach.
And again, you know, when I was talking about it
with a couple different guys,
and they're concerned with Carolina as a goaltending.
Anderson hasn't been great this year.
Again, we talk about the older's goaltitting.
Where's Carolina's goaltending?
And so that's the concern with Carolina.
right now. What did they get back for rantin?
I can't remember. Oh, they got Logan Stan Colvin.
Right? He was the big kid, like the big score of the dub.
He's highly thought of. I see what you say. Anderson was 13, 7, and 1.
Cachecov? Yeah. 27, 15, and 3.
What was his? So that'll be the, so that's the guy that they started?
897 save percentage.
So upon saying that,
I'm picking Carolina in seven.
I really can't go against my mom who would totally want me to pick Carolina,
so I'll go Carolina in six.
Shout out to you.
Shout out to you,
mom.
Go with your gut Harles.
The better goal attending,
you just explained it all the way.
Yeah,
I just live for the moment,
Harles.
Are you just going to follow your two older brothers around or what?
For the rest of your life?
Like Jacob Markstrom, though, is 2616 with a 900 saved.
So he's a couple points better.
I mean, it just...
Has anybody want to win this series?
All right.
I'm going to go with
Columbus in...
Carolina.
Carolina in six.
This reminds me like a dad moment.
Carolina and...
I'll take Rosby.
I'll take Crosby.
Dad, it's the 10th round of the draft.
He's...
Don't you remember in the very first...
The very first year we had the draft was in 06,
the Don's Cup.
And so back then, Detroit was fairly big name.
And I think Federoff went in the first round.
Second round, dad goes, I'll take Federoff.
He went last round.
Okay.
Third round comes?
Maybe I'll take Federer.
Dad, Federoff's been gone since first round.
You wonder if he was just playing with us now, though?
And in the sixth round, he goes, is Federoff still around?
And I think at that point he was playing, but he asked for Federoff three times.
I'm going to take New Jersey.
I'm going to take New Jersey in six.
I think, you know, the only thing when you,
you're missing here is you go, oh, did they get enough?
But you, like, I watched them last year, and I thought they were fantastic.
They just didn't have the goaltending.
My worry with Markstrom is when he got destroyed by the Emmets and Oilers, and they absolutely made him look.
He was never the same after that.
Yeah.
I just think Carolina's got that old vet team that are going to be hard to play against.
With great coaching, with a really good coaching.
I just, I don't know.
What do we always talk about, goaltending?
But another side really has.
Wait a little.
Sean's bigger on Mark's.
Wait a minute.
It was the last time that Calgary Flames made the playoffs
when the Oilers destroyed them?
Yes.
And ruined their whole confidence.
They never recovered from that.
Right, because Kachuk left.
Right after that.
But to be honest, they've almost revamped that entire team.
There's hardly anybody left.
Well, they had to because they had no confidence left.
Rasmus Anderson would be still there.
Still can't make the playoffs.
Somewhere Nick is throwing things at the wall right now.
I'm going to text him when this is done and be like,
hey, you should really turn in the road table?
We talked about the flames a little bit.
I will see.
somewhere is like swerving the work truck
Marty Bowles? Yeah they're just
all like grab her. I will say
I will say that they probably have one of the best
young goalies coming up with Dustin Wolf.
So they've got
something, I always love starting with a good
goaltender because you can work your way out from that.
They've got some nice young forwards.
But they're not huge, although that
one guy's huge.
Oh yeah, that one guy.
Hey Flames fans. I just got a badge.
He's so memorable.
I don't even remember.
His name is, you know what?
His name, I believe, is Adam Klapka.
I think he's like six, seven, or six.
I can't imagine building a team around one of the most hated guys in the league,
Nazim Kodry.
I just can't do it.
You had to truck.
You had to truck.
Final prediction for a silver coin.
Who's in the final?
And who wins the Stanley Cup this year?
And who's your MVP?
That's three.
Yeah.
You're going to do three?
Is that the tie break?
I mean, think about the tie break.
All right.
Fine, fine, fine, fine.
Fine, Jay.
The first one is Stanley Cup winner.
or second one is.
No, Stanley Cup finalists.
Stanley Cup finals.
MVP.
Sean goes first.
I go first.
Well, you've been going on.
That's because I'm writing it all that.
You've been able to sit here and look at what we're saying and make your picks.
Let's see you go first.
Well, we're going to watch two older brothers.
Hey, Harles, dude, who do you think I'm going to pick to make the Stanley Cup finals this year?
I've picked them every year for...
Emitting in Florida?
I'm going to pick Emmington Oilers.
Verses the Toronto Mapleys.
Oh, God.
No.
All Canadian.
Same prediction.
If he doesn't for the next 100 years,
he might get it right here.
Same prediction as last year, I believe.
Yes.
And who wins the cup?
Emmett's no other.
And who's your MVP?
Connor McDavid.
There you go.
No, that's a lie.
Actually, it's going to be Leon Dreisdil.
You know why you did that now?
Because then if Connor wins, you go, well, see, I said
Connor first.
Right now it's kind of like I've said two guys.
I'm going to name off 17 guys off the team.
It could be Hyman.
It says, oh, yeah, sure, sure.
Emmington versus Toronto
Emmington, Leon.
Charles?
Just going through it here.
I think Florida is going to be back.
We're going to three Pete to the finals.
I think so.
Wow.
Toronto making it to the finals?
No.
The only thing is
Tampa Bay, Florida.
I picked Florida to beat Tampa,
so then that's out.
I don't think the
capitals, like maybe they might get to the semis, I guess, is where I'm saying.
Florida and the capitals, I'm picking Florida over.
So then you go to the other side.
I mean, Jet Stars have lunch.
There's a lot of good teams.
Ted Turner's a lot of good teams.
This is why I'm just taking my time.
I'm thinking it through here.
I'll say.
That turtles halfway across the border.
In game three, the second round, I think Florida's going to score four.
Turn the series around and turn the series around.
Yeah.
Okay, Florida versus who in the finals.
You know, it would be funny.
Oh, my goodness.
If he forgot who he picked and then took one of the teasies.
Florida versus who, Harold.
Well, I'd love to say Edmonton, but I can't because you've already said Emmington.
No, no, no.
He took Emmettton Toronto.
You go to Emmetton, Florida.
Right?
I think Emmington.
Eminton, Florida.
Emmington finally does it.
Eminton wins.
Eminton wins?
M v.
Mbitton.
McDavid.
Conner, McDavid.
Connor McDavid.
All right.
Dust?
Emerton in the finals, Dust.
So painful.
I'm going to go Florida in the finals.
I think they're just too good.
And on the other side, I'm going to go Colorado.
And I'm going to go...
Who wins it?
The D-Man.
No, no, who wins the Cup?
So you're saying Colorado.
Colorado win the Cup.
Macar is the NBA.
Interesting pick.
All right, Jay.
With the final thoughts here.
Well, I hate to do it, but I am going to go Toronto in the finals.
Oh, all that, all that, and then you're going to go Toronto in the finals.
Interesting.
I feel like if Toronto's ever going to get to the finals, it's this year.
Interesting.
Boston's not in.
Tampa Bay, like you say, isn't what they used to be.
Your top team in Washington is maybe not that team.
Who's going to see them in the finals, Jay?
Who's going to see them in the finals?
Oh, it's just pain you.
Well, it's not going to be Emmerton.
Interesting.
And it's not going to be Colorado.
So I just, I picked Dallas and Vegas to meet in the semis.
And so I think that's a tough one, but I'm going to go, I'm going to go Dallas, Toronto in the finals.
And.
Is the curse over.
Is the curse over?
This is what everybody's wondering right now.
I know.
Everybody's sitting here waiting.
I'm holding, you know, this is how you make good radio guys.
And I'm going to pick Dallas to win the cup.
So the Canadian curse continues.
You know, if the upset happens in the first round,
I'm going to be dancing a jig in here.
Yes.
And my MVP off of Dallas is going to be,
I'm going to say, Audinger.
There.
Now at least I get it did something different.
than you guys.
Realistically, though,
you look at the West,
whoever's coming out of the West,
like you got Jet Stars,
Avalanche, Kings, Oilers.
The same could be said about the East.
No, I don't think so.
Jay's taken, after I take
all the Toronto.
Okay, maybe Toronto all the way.
Toronto, Florida.
Interesting.
Now I understand why you like to go first.
Hey?
Everyone goes, oh, you gotta go first.
I don't think hurricanes are making it.
I don't think devils are making it.
I don't think the lightning are making it.
The Senators are making it.
The Canadians or Columbus,
I don't, I don't,
I don't see the same strength out of the east
as I do the west.
Here's something that we should put our, you know,
let's say in the first two rounds,
everybody agree.
Nobody sees St. Louis or Minnesota getting to the Western final.
Agreed.
It's hard to envision it.
Is there anybody else?
So you got Winnipeg?
Could you see Winnipeg?
Yes.
Dallas, Colorado, Hamilton, Vegas, L.A.
Could you see all six, seven teams in the Western Final?
Yes.
Right?
And on the other side, you got Montreal or Columbus and...
Ottawa?
Ottawa?
For the most part, none of us.
Do you see Carolina or Jersey?
No.
I can see Carolina.
Well, here's the thing with Carolina Jersey,
which is interesting, is their top teams, Washington.
So if you don't see Carolina or Jersey,
and you don't see Montreal or Columbus,
then you see Washington in the semifinals.
No, no, I don't.
I can see Carolina going.
See what I mean?
Like that, that east is wide open on that side.
In reality, you say, well, I can't see Ottawa doing it.
Well, if they get by them and they end up facing,
no, Ottawa plays Toronto.
That division is a different side.
So it would be Montreal, Columbus, Jersey, Carolina, Washington.
That's wide open, actually, though.
That's the weakest division.
Right?
That's wide open.
And on the flip side, though, Toronto, Florida, Tampa,
you can probably see all three of them teams.
Gentlemen, it'll be a fun couple of months here.
We'll be doing this once a week,
and they come out kind of sporadically.
We work around everybody's work schedule.
We aim and the Oilers schedule until they're either winning it all or they're out.
but normally Wednesday, Thursday
afternoons you're going to see a Brothers Roundtable
come out and this is what it's going to be
so if you enjoyed it, make sure
to pay attention for it. Brothers Roundtables
from here till essentially
playoffs end, right? I think we went
right till the end of June last year. Wasn't it?
Something like that. We do it once a week
during playoffs. So we're back.
The brothers are back in the studio.
Toronto-Eminton Final and
it's funny you all laugh at me but two of us
picked Eminton to make the final. Two of us
picked Toronto to make the final. So I'm
not so wild.
And two of us pick Florida.
That's right.
And one of us picked neither of them.
Last year, I feel like there were some silver coins flying around the room here,
and we were keeping track of stacks.
Were we not?
Yes, we were.
That's right.
Whoever got the most right for each round.
Okay, well, I tell you what.
Like I said to Nick, like I would pick Calgary for him if I could.
I just can't get there.
Wait, wait, wait.
What we did last year on the first podcast, right?
Will have every team played by next week?
Yes, right?
Game one.
That's right.
We pick game one winners.
All right.
Game one winners first.
Well, we all want a silver coin.
Here it is, if you're looking for precious metals, silver gold pole.
You got two ways of getting a silver coin.
You either come on the Brothers Roundtable and win a round, or you get a whole silver gold bowl and get one on a Calgary.
That's right.
Or Vegas.
Hey, Nick, if you want to come join us for a...
Hey, maybe he should.
Maybe he should for another round.
Hey?
I mean, at least he...
I mean, the team, they've got to have a team in the playoffs, though, right?
So, I mean, I don't want to argue with the play games as well, we're doing a playoff podcast here.
I look at the opposite way.
He has an advantage over us because he's got nobody left in the playoffs he's cheering for.
So he can be very...
That's right.
So he can be very practical about this.
Okay, I got Emmington winning the first game, Vegas winning the first game,
Winnipeg winning the first game.
Florida.
No, you get to pick a...
Yep.
You're picking first right off the first.
Washington, and I'm going to pick, I'm going to actually take, no, I'm going to do it this way, Toronto, New Jersey, and Dallas. There you go. I'm picking my series winners all winning the first game. I'll do the same. That's how you're doing. Dust is doing the same. I'm going to pick, are you keeping track of this now? Yes. And you've got five minutes left. Florida. Washington, Jersey.
On the West, Jets, Avalanche, Vegas, Oilers.
So you have one out of there.
You pick Carolina to win, but you're taking New Jersey in game one.
Got you.
Okay.
Which leaves Jay.
Okay.
So I'm going to pick L.A., Vegas.
Winnipeg and Dallas.
And on the other side, I'm going to pick Toronto.
I'm going to pick Tampa Bay.
I'm going to pick Washington and Carolina.
So you picked the L.A. Kings as your only one,
not to, Emmington win the series.
So L.A. is going to win one game,
and then the Oilers are going to rattle off four in a row.
That's your prediction.
Interesting.
All right.
We'll be back here next week.
