Sheikh Uthman Hadi - To Believe without being Tested? | Friday Khutbah
Episode Date: April 3, 2026The journey of faith is not devoid of tests. As Allah reminds us in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:2), belief must be accompanied by trials. These tests are not meant to break us but to build us, to refine our ...faith, and to draw us closer to Allah. and I shudu an Muhammad and Abduhu and Rasmu.
Assalamu alaqmah and barakitam with your brothers and sisters.
I pray that everyone is doing well and I ask Allah,
to forgive us for our sins and shortcomings
and grant us to special mercy not only in this life,
but mainly in the next.
We are back for another Friday again.
Inshallah, we ask Allah,
to grant us Berga within the rest of our days.
And we also ask Allah,
Sufānau'lla to accept our fast from us,
by fast from us. And I mentioned that point as well
to stud off because these
are the three white days in which you should have fast
which are the
13th, the 14th, and the 15th,
which was Wednesday, Thursday, and today is
Friday. So, inshallah, for anyone
who is fasting today, I ask Allah to
accept your fast from you,
forgive you for your sins of your shortcomings and grant
all of us, especially mercy
not only in this life, the meaning the next.
My brothers and sisters, I want to discuss
a very profound aspect of our faith.
Right? And especially as we come out of
Ramadan, a lot of us have this high of maybe I wasn't tested enough during Ramadan,
maybe I wasn't tested like that.
And one of the questions that we have to ask ourselves as well is, are we like those who
are going to believe without being tested?
Are we going to be like those who believe without being tested?
There's actually an ayah from Surah al-Haj that I want to mention as well in which Allah
subpoena huta a word says what?
He says that there are some who say that they worship Allah and they believe in Allah.
But when they are tested with, sorry, actually, if I quote it the right way, when good comes to them, they are content with it.
But when a hardship afflicts them, then they deny.
They deny the faith and they turn away from Allah supanahua-Tal.
And that's truly is the clearest loss.
That's the first ay I want to mention.
And the second ayah is from Surah al-Kavut, which Allah-Supon-Hu-Tal-Tal says,
do you think it's sufficient enough for you to believe without being tested?
right so
Allah suhpaniahua taa tells us
specifically in these two ayas I'm mentioning
that every single believer
is going to be tested
and I want you to bring this back
to the time of the Prophet of Allah
Allah a He waslam
even all of the challenges he faced
bringing this religion
to the way it is now
by the sake of Allah sufanahu
and also all the prophets
who came before him
all the tests they had to go through
you imagine Nooh a lae salam
preaching Islam to the people
for all the years
that he did. You imagine how many trials he went through. You imagine the trials of Yusuf
a. Salaam and Yonis Al-Salaam. You imagine the trials of Yaquou and you imagine the trials
of of the Prophetus of Allah and all of the trials of the Prophet's that they went through.
And when it comes to those tests, we spoke about this in a journey to the divine as well.
That these tests are tests that help build your al-Qaqlap. These are tests that help build your
connection with Allah suhpaniahu isa and they help build your relationship with
Allah safana huaata and it's a very it's a very important part of our lives
especially as believers now I also spoke about this as well in another talk I did in the past
which was why does Allah suhpana huata allow hardship and suffering and when it comes to
those tests the reasoning why is to gain closeness to Allah and also one of the other ones is
to distinguish between the true believer which means that Allah is going to test us
He's going to test us between those who are sincere in their faith and those who are not.
And he's going to distinguish between the two.
And, you know, it's also a means of strengthening our faith and strengthening our amen.
When it comes to those trials that we face, they serve as a means of deepening our tawakub or reliance on Allah,
and when faced with those difficulties, we turn to him in those dua, we turn to him in our prayers.
And most importantly, we turn to Allah, Sufano, Heu, T'a, with sincerity.
which helps strengthen our connection with Allah supranahua.
And the third thing I want to mention is that it helps purify our hearts.
It helps purify our period, right?
As those tests cleanse our hearts from arrogance and from pride.
And it grants us that humility.
And it reminds us of our vulnerability and our dependence upon Allah subhpanohu.
And our dependence upon Allah suhpanohoea solely.
So when it comes to this point, I want to tie this into something else as well.
when it comes to your tests and those purpose of those trials,
one of the first things I would like to mention is the reflection upon your actions, right?
And the reflection upon the things that you once did,
which is why Umur Ibn al-Katabri Allaho-en-Hu said,
bring yourself to account before you are taken to account and weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you.
So when it comes to this, these tests actually grant us the ability to
turn back to Allah to seek forgiveness, to try our absolute hardest to return back to Allah, right?
And we spoke about this before in turning back to Allah, not only in, you know, the event that
we did, but also in the series.
When it comes to these tests, they are a means of alleviation of our sins.
There are a means of closeness to Allah.
And they're also a means of maybe sometimes even granting us the ability to recognize what we
didn't recognize about ourselves in the first place, right?
Whether that is a sin that we may be committing that we didn't recognize, maybe it's something that we could be saying or something that we could be doing that's bringing us away from Allah supano huatala.
And when it comes to those tests, a lot of us think of these tests of big, grand things, right?
But sometimes tests can be something very small.
It can be how you are in a situation that makes you upset.
It can be how you are when you get sick, when you fall ill.
It can be how you are with your health and how you are with your time.
And also it can be your wealth.
It can be your religion because many of us are tested with our religion, especially on public, right?
But many of us are tested with our religion.
And nowadays, of course, we can say internally as well due to social media and things like this where it also tests our religion.
But when it comes here, tests are not just always going to be big grand things that are going to be demolishing our lives.
But sometimes there are things that slowly take us to a certain path.
And this is exactly why I mentioned in the beginning to distinguish between two true believers.
Right. So when it comes to these tests that we face, it helps distinguish between a true believer, one who is sincere in their faith and sincere with their connection with Allah and one who is not. Right. So this is also why my dear brothers and sisters, it also comes to the point of increasing in your gratitude or increasing in your sugar. Right. And when you overcome those challenges, you have to learn to appreciate those blessings that you actually have and become more grateful for them. Some of us don't realize that. In the very moment we may be going through.
certain things and maybe it's just how life is and it's working and we're going through our daily lives
and all of a sudden something is taken away from us and now it's like man i wish i had that thing again
and then when you somehow maybe by allah saanahua i granting that back to you for a specific reason
so you can be more grateful and even just being granted back that thing is actually attested in any of
itself but when you get it back you have to be more grateful with it because if you turn back to what you
used to do, then you are exactly like the first ayah I mentioned in which I mentioned how
Allah, Sufana-Hu-Talah says that there are some who say that we believe, but when they're
afflicted with something bad, they turn away. And when something good happens to them, they come,
and they say, oh, we're content. But when something bad happens to them, they falter in their
faith and in their closeness to Allah, subana-hu-ta-a-a-a-a-a-ha. And test can also be your
closest to Allah. You know, some of us, and most of us, honestly, I'm going to say most of us,
because pretty much the hardest prayer to wake up before is fudjah.
When it comes to those tests,
sometimes you can tell your connection to Allah sufana hua'adda
by your perseverance, by your resilience,
and by your commitment to actually waking up for that prayer.
Some people do some of the craziest things just to wake up for that prayer,
but it ends up working, right?
And some people don't have to do that,
and it's due to their closeness to Allah Safanahua'u'u'a'u'a'a'a'a.
You have a lot of people smiling right now, okay?
I'm seeing somebody smiling, okay?
But when it comes to that,
I want you to think about how much
how much closeness you have to Allah
even if it may seem as man
I must have one of the worst relationships
with Allah because I can't even wake up for Fajar
but actually you have a close relationship with
Allah if you're trying your absolute hardest
no matter what to try and wake up for Fadjur
even if it is stripping you of all these different things
and this is something that I want you to think of as well
a lot of us
sometimes go through these challenges
and through these difficulties in our lives
what is one of the things that you have to remember during those trials,
which is why the Prophet of Allah, Allah, Alyi-u-Salam taught us the importance of
dua and seeking guidance throughout those times.
And also, as we should engage in Quran, we should engage in, you know, reciting it,
we should gauge in sala.
And we should also engage in trying to support others who are going through those trials as well.
Do not think that this is just a one-man show.
It's just, oh, I'm only going through it.
Everybody just come to flock to me, help me.
Help others as well, if you have the ability to.
And this is exactly why the Prophet of Allah a.
He waslelam also taught us to take care of those five before they're gone, right?
And this is exactly why my brothers and sisters.
It's very important that you try your absolute hardest to remember the ayah I mentioned in the beginning in which Allah,
subhanna huazada says that we will test every believer.
Whether or not they are strong in faith, whether or not they are the most pious,
whether or not they are the weakest believer, we are still going to test him.
because Allah, Sufanahu is Allah loves those whom we test.
And also these tests, my brothers and sisters,
are not meant to break us, but they're meant to build us.
They're not meant to, you know, destroy our iman
and destroy our character and destroy our relationship with Allah,
subhpana hua'u, but they are a means of refining our iman
and drawing us closer to Allah, suhpanohu,ta a.
So, my brothers and sisters,
ensure that you are trying your absolute hardest
to remember Allah every single day.
You're trying to be grateful to Allah every single day.
And like I mentioned before, from Umar, Ibn Hakata, by allah and whom, he said,
bring yourself to account before you are taken to account and weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you.
Ensure, my dear brothers and sisters, that while you have this opportunity, especially on the blessed day of Friday,
you are bringing yourself to account for the things that you might have gone wrong with.
You are seeking forgiveness from others.
And also, my dear brothers and sisters, ensure that you are weighing your deeds before they are weighed for you.
Ensure that you are saying, is my scale heavy enough?
Am I just going to say, oh, I think I've done it?
enough deeds and I think that'll be it or you're going to try your absolute hardest
my brothers and sisters in every moment you have to try and better your deeds to try and make the
scale heavier and we ask Allah suhpanihuita to make all of our scales heavier I mean
my brothers and sisters we ask Allah suhpana hua Tala to strengthen our faith and
guide us through our trials to help us to remain steadfast in our imman to help us remain
steadfast in this religion and to allow for us to turn back to him in times of
difficulty in times of ease I mean we're a good at one alham
