My voice just broke a little bit. apologies that's really nice yep now we all love the idea of a side hustle a little extra coin to help free up your cash flow sounds like the dream and it certainly is the dream georgia it can be but as you would know for busy people which we also know a lot of our listeners are it can be

really hard to keep up with your primary job and then also hustle on the weekend after hours get it done it's hard especially with like set hours like that makes it extra struggly so to help you out if you are wanting a little side hustle but you are stretched for time we've rounded up our top apps and websites for making money so you can get on the hustle with minimal effort and in some cases from the comfort of your couch or someone else's we'll explain that later but like it could be your couch or someone else's couch. Exactly right. My name is Georgia King and joining me today is financial advisor, Victoria Devine. V, what are your thoughts on apps that help us hustle? What's your take on it? I love it. It's literally so exciting. And I think let's preface this,

right? So G, we've gone away. We've done our research. We have come up with our top five favorite apps to help make you money that don't require you to have money to begin with. So obviously that out a little more. What do you mean? Yeah. So we've done top five, but then we've also done some honorable mentions. So like they get a mention, but I think you guys would have guessed those ones. So like, we're not going to make them one of our top ones because otherwise why are we a podcast with content? But when we say you don't have to have money to make money, we obviously adore our app friends like shop back and our friends at shares is, but those apps, not a bad thing, do require you to spend money to make

money. So as a prerequisite for this episode, we have made the decision to only review apps and recommend apps that you do not need any cash to start with. So obviously our friends at Shopback give you a cashback reward for shopping online, which is a money win if you've got something that you wanted to buy. And Sharesies, they're our investment app friends that we've been talking all over the podcasts about more recently, and they're a great investing platform. But again, you're going to need money to put on the platform to start making money all of which is great but gee what if we have no money to begin with here's five top apps that don't require much skill that are going to help you boost your income this financial year love it money win so excited we

should also say up the top here that none of these apps or websites are sponsoring this episode oh no they're just the ones that we thought were pretty rad can you imagine that would be nice that would do get in touch if you if you want to hear yourself on the show let us know and we are happy to chat um georgia does sponsored posts over on her instagram i think she's got nearly a thousand followers for my yeah for my 800 followers oh sorry um okay v let's get straight into it fiverr is the first app on our list today i've never used fiverr oh i have it's an epic little platform tell me all about it shouldn't call it little though it's actually massive it the world's largest marketplace for digital services that gives employers the opportunity

to hire people like freelance writers or graphic designers or people who can do copy via their platform. And it also allows freelancers the opportunity to use the platform to connect with potential clients. Now, there are a number of reasons why you would use this. It could be good for people who are creatives, writers, designers, people in video or animation or marketing or audio, all of which I do not have any skill in, but you could also advertise your administrative skills or have a look on the platform and see what there is. Because honestly, it is endless. I have used it a number of times. It is honestly such a good platform and it's really great for people who want to make the most of having access to clients without branding or

marketing themselves. So you don't need to have a website set up. You don't need to go and, you know create a whole business for yourself you can just pop your skills on this platform fill out a little bio about you and what you do and over time you might have to start at a lower entry rate because obviously to get your first few jobs without any reviews is going to be a bit of a challenge but i don't think it would be too bad yeah but once you build up those good reviews you can increase your prices and i actually know someone in our community who just checks copy like literally just fact checks copy and English because she has clients that are English as a second language and wants like essays and stuff proofread so that it is grammatically correct

because English isn't something that absolutely everyone is always perfect at I feel like a lot of people could do that role even if they don't have like video and animation design and you're not a graphic designer like I think this platform could absolutely tick a few boxes and as I said you've got the opportunity to use it as much or as little as you want and gee in fact when we were doing some research for this episode we found out that there is a freelancer in the US her name's Alexandra and she says that she has made $378,000 US as a freelance writer on Fiverr. Dude she said she makes that per year. Oh my gosh not total. Not total that's per year that's not real most writers earn like 50k a year um literally but she says it's not that hard and to be honest with

numbers like that i really want to believe her i know i'm really intrigued by that story alexandra if you're listening call in that's not really a thing that we do i mean it's probably not the norm i would love alexandra's money story so if anyone knows her let us know we'd love to slide into her DMs, but it's one of those things where even if you've got some free time at home, maybe reading essays or reading copy or doing something that you have skill in could actually make you some money. And G, as we promised, guess what? You can do it from your couch. Yeah, exactly right. And this one's really handy for freelancers because, you know, I freelance and it can be really hard to connect with clients. Sometimes you just don't have the energy. You don't have the passion maybe

to like go out and pursue leads and try and network it's hard in this day and age as well so this just having like a pool of clients there that you can work with i think is really helpful and not having to invest in marketing and branding is really handy as well yeah so good and their fees are quite reasonable as well we've done the research into that fiverr's service fees are 5.5 percent of the purchase amount which is i think pretty good especially because marketing and branding and websites and stuff would absolutely cost you a little bit more than that to establish in the first instance. And then there's an additional $2 small fee order applied to purchases that are under $50, which I don't know, that all seems quite reasonable for how easy they

make the process. Again, not sponsored, we're just fans. Yeah. And we should say as well that we will link to all of these apps and websites in the show bios. So you don't need to be writing them down as we go. We will leave them there for you. Gee, what's next on our list? Okay, the next one here is Airtasker V. I know you have used Airtasker a couple of times quite recently. I have. Tell me all about it. Do love Airtasker. I feel like it makes my life really easy. So when we moved offices, I used Airtasker and some really strong boys. Jess was a fan. And they helped us move all of our furniture into our new office, which arguably was only the level down, but like it was quite heavy. So that was really helpful. And the task got done in like an hour, as in I posted

it and the hour after we had people turn up, which was epic. But AirTasker, not dissimilar to Fiverr, only the tasks are usually more hands-on. So Fiverr you could do anywhere in the world, whereas AirTasker is more location-based. I mean, people can do copywriting jobs and stuff like that on there as well, but again, more location-based usually. So essentially as a user, I can go onto the app, post a task, and then users of the app can bid for the task. And they might say, all right, well, V, I could do that for a hundred dollars. And someone else might come in and be like, yep, cool. I can do that. And it's 110. And then you can read through their reviews and work out who you want to go with and pick the person that you think is right for the job. As a hustler,

like you can literally go on that app and keep an eye out for tasks that are within your scope of capability and you can just put your hand up for the price that you're willing to do it for so like it might be rubbish removal which I have used airtasker for before because I didn't have the tools and resources to get a trailer and get all the rubbish that I had from moving house a little while ago in a trailer and get it done it was just easier to get an airtasker but also I might have like a day's worth of admin I know actually I've got a couple of girlfriends who have online product businesses where they have to pack boxes and a couple of them have had days where their businesses have been so busy that they actually needed a few more hands on

deck to pack their product boxes and drop things to the post office. So there are even jobs like that, which are essentially just labor-based jobs where it's like, hey, cool, 200 bucks for half a day's work. Please come down and help me pack my orders for my online business. So it's actually quite cool what they have on that platform. And especially if you're in lockdown, jobs like that, because they're essential they'll give you an essential workers permit so that you can one get out of the house and do something if that's what you're up to but two it's absolutely legal and absolutely fine because you're doing work that needs to be done kind of cool right absolutely and does this work in a similar way to fiverr in that you like create a profile and people

approach you or is it like review based as well it's kind of like the flip so like i as somebody who needs something done will post a job and then you will bid for that job by saying, I can do that job for this job. I think it's quite easy. So it's split up into different categories. So like removals, assembly, so you can get people to assemble all your Ikea furniture, which is quite cool. IT, cooking, handyman, design and business. So it's usable for a lot of people with a wide range of skills, which we like. And again, G, we think it's really good because you can make money on there that you otherwise wouldn't have made. And even if you just do like one $100 task each week in a year's time, gee, that's $5,200, like five grand. Nice. That is nothing to be sneezed

at, VD. I know. What I love about this one as well, because I know when we did our side hustling episode way back when, people were like, yeah, great, but not all of us know how to make candles or are good at writing. And I don't know what skills I have. Yeah, you don't have to be. Exactly. So this is a way of making that cash without having necessarily like the fanciest skill set, you know? Exactly. And it's also a way of boosting your income without having to start like a business and brand yourself and have like a skill that you're marketing. Like you can literally go on there and some people are like, cool, I can't cook. Can you do my meal prep? Cause I'm on a diet. And maybe they'll let you know what to do. And I've got friends that have

done that too. So I think it's really interesting. And even if you're like, oh, I really don't think that there's going to be anything for me. What are you going to lose from downloading the app while you're already on the couch and scrolling through what kinds of jobs are on there? Because you might say something, you're like, oh, I didn't even know that was a thing and give it a crack. Easy. Because if it's not for you, don't do it again. Also, like if you're saving for something, I have my eye on this blanket at the moment and it's like way too much money. Like I should not, I should not be buying that blanket. But if I did like a few little tasks and set that money aside for that blanket. I could justify that blanket. Say blanket again, George. But yeah, I feel like

that's a nice kind of little way of saving as well. I think it's really cool as well. And I actually know a couple of mums that do that on the side and then they use that money for family holidays each year because family holidays weren't in the initial budget. So like that's kind of cool that they can create the lifestyle that they want to live by doing some extra stuff that they otherwise wouldn't have been able to do. And I know that a lot of us just hadn't considered it, which is why we've done this entire episode. Love. In terms of fees, V, do they take a cut of what we're making? How does that work? So we found an article on Finder because I couldn't find anything on their website. And it says that Airtasker automatically

deducts a service fee of around 15 to 20% of the total price of the job. So pretty clean, pretty clear. At the end of the day, they need to make their money. But the good thing about Airtasker is, that fee pays for insurance and maintenance costs, which I think is a pretty good deal. Absolutely. All right. Next one here, V. Now, we tossed up whether or not to include Facebook Marketplace on this list. It's kind of a given. The community knows how much we love Facebook Marketplace. We talk about it all the time. We've done it on drinks, Friday drinks. Jessica Ritchie is always talking about it. She's a big fan of the manifesting. Exactly. She can manifest anything on Facebook Marketplace. So we're not just talking about

saving money though and going shopping. That's definitely not the recommendation, which it usually is, isn't it? Well, it's more about selling our stuff here. So the platform that we want to talk about is Depop, which Jess is also a big fan of. Tell us more about Depop, Vee, because I am not hip enough to be across it. Oh, gee, I don't think either of us are. And that's why we had to turn to the good Jessica Ritchie to tell us how it works and what's going on because I was overwhelmed. I downloaded the app and I was like, I am not cool enough to be here. And there seems to be like strategy and stuff behind it. Anyway, how it works, get to the crux of it. There are a lot of people who use Depop. If you haven't heard of it,

same, but there are 30 million users of Depop, which is wild. And it's essentially a peer-to-peer marketplace that's laid out in a very similar format to Instagram. So you can kind of like scroll through lots of different pictures and then you can buy and sell clothes and items from those pictures, which I think is quite cool. And as a seller, you can set up your profile with like a photo or a logo if you want to get really fancy and a site description, and you can connect your social media and stuff to it, which is actually kind of cool. I don't know how that works and why having your Instagram attached to your Depop account is going to sell more, but I'll just leave that there. But our very own Jessica, she adores Depop. And she said that

the main selling points here for her to use Depop is that it's super convenient that you don't have to wait around for someone to pick up things like you do on Facebook marketplace. And you can negotiate with someone via the inside messenger that they have, and then they can buy and pay for it before you ship it or meet up to pick it up. And it's something that we like, right? Because there was recent research, again, none of this is sponsored, but also how cool that we are at a point, G, where we have to disclaimer that. That's true. So special. That is true. Anyway, there was recent research by Gumtree that actually said that the average Australian has $5,200 worth of stuff sitting around their house that they don't use and could sell. So that's pretty good if we're

talking about making money. And obviously, gee, we love the secondhand economy and the fact that, you know, fast fashion exists. This is one way of getting some fashion items into your wardrobe or out of your wardrobe in this particular case in a really good way. Apparently, it's easier to use than Facebook Marketplace. According to Jessica, we're putting it in the pros. I like that. And people are using the app in their own way by setting up little online stores and stuff for their brand. So people are like making scrunchies and stuff and putting it on there without having to set up a whole social media profile in an online business for their kind of small business, especially during lockdown. I just think this is a really cool option. Yeah. So it's kind of like

a step beyond marketplace in that, like if I was selling, I'm still selling my formal dress guys, if anyone remembers that ordeal. No one's bought it yet. Not surprisingly. So if you had a profile on Depop, it would be much more personalized. You'd have like multiple things on there that like true to your style and people would then probably return to you i'm imagining because does that make sense that's always your formal dress on depop i'm gonna put it on there george's i was gonna say it's probably why it hasn't sold yeah um yeah i'll uh head head out and do that right after this episode um fees for depop fee so depop charges a 10 fee for all sales that are made through the buy button and this automatically is charged on the total transaction amount

including shipping costs, which I think is kind of cool. So you don't have to worry about transferring money or paying for things that just happens and then you'll get the profits. Bob's your uncle. All right. That one is for Jessica Ricci. Okay. Let's head to a little break here, guys. But on the other side, we will be chatting surveys, dog sitting and potential flaws that we need to be mindful of when it comes to using the apps as a side hustle. Stick around, guys girl now we are talking about pure profile so you haven't heard of that one before i hadn't until we researched this and then i set up a little profile guess how much money i've made since we chatted this morning 85 cents but oh she is rich super easy that was a two minute job

that i did wait you made 85 cents in two minutes yes not bad that's pretty good thank you not bad so hey if we extrapolate that out g i don't know if you did this but i did because hold on let me use my brain quick not so quick maths that is 25 and 50 cents per hour see that's pretty good money that's the thing so 85 cents it sounds like nothing but then when you when you do your quick maths like you just did it's actually heaps um we should explain i think that's good i mean you do have to pay tax so that's actual income but at the same time 25 bucks did you do it from your couch yeah i did money win now let's let's explain what it is for anyone who's like what are the girls talking about they've lost the plot um we have lockdowns really got to them this is

actually a really cool not app so it's not strictly an app but this could be just another easy way to make some cashola on the side pure profile pays you cash to do surveys which we love basically you complete surveys and the more surveys you take the more money you make a nice time do their marketing for them you reckon that could be their slogan yeah so you can redeem the money in cash which is obviously ideal or you can redeem it via various gift cards or via paypal or in discounts or even in movie tickets probably not pretty cool probably not gonna do it in movie tickets but i like the sentiment not at this point in time but it's nice to know we've got absolutely so as we said before v i was literally doing it from the comfort of my couch i was sitting there doing

nothing anyway i was waiting for harps to do something so that we could go on our daily lockdown walk um so i have five minutes to kill so what else are you gonna do may as well do make 85 cents that's what you're gonna do um i really like that because at the end of the day i think a lot of us, especially in Melbourne and Sydney, we have reached the point in lockdown where we are now bored enough to watch all of Oprah, all of Dr. Phil, and then whatever cooking show comes on at 3pm. Like that's what point we are at. And I think that this could be an engaging way of just, you know, even if you do like an hour or two, I'm not promising this will be the amount that you make each and every single hour. But as you said before, George, you made 85 cents for two minutes

of time it's 25 bucks an hour exactly and the surveys they all differ in what they pay you so apparently with a lot of these survey sites a lot of them do points for like how many surveys you complete oh yeah whereas on this platform it's it's a set price so you know what you're getting as you go into it if that makes sense right like you're not just going i get three points for this and then three points ends up being exactly right flyby's points and they're worth nothing i like that. Yes. And I should say that it was also really fun. So just a little fun activity. If you're bored on the toilet, have fun with it. Do it. You know what I mean? Fees, things to consider, go VD. All right. So you could only cash out a maximum of $70 at a time and a minimum of $20.

So G, I'm sorry to let you know, but you can't cash your 85 cents out yet. You're going to have to do some more work. And then once you get to 20 bucks, you can cash it out. That's all right. your redemption can't exceed more than 70 bucks within a 60 day period so you know it's not going to be do 40 hours of this a week and actually have this job as a full-time job but 70 bucks is definitely not something that we should sneeze at but again also it's not instant cash it could take up to 30 business days to be processed and land in your account so i wouldn't be doing this if you need some quick cash different surveys again are going to earn you different amounts of money. And there are lots of different survey platforms online. I know that there's another one

called Octopus, which seems to be really popular in our community. But moving on, G, from things that we can do on our own couches to things we could potentially do on other people's couches. Yes. I knew this would be the one that you were the most excited about. So it's called- Obviously, that's why I suggested this first and you put it last. I know. Well, I wanted to build the anticipation for you, my girl. So kind. So it's called Pawshake. I love it.

Why don't you sell it to me? Because I have already tried to sell it to you prior to this episode. I think it's great. So Pawshake basically is the dream dog sitting app. I feel like it's the dream for people like you, V, who don't really need to be paid to look after other people's dogs anyway. Me, on the other hand, I'm not as kind. I love dogs, but you know. So if I go away, I can't call you and be like, hey, will you look after Lucy?

No, Lucy is different. I have a connection with certain dogs, but. Oh, okay. So Lucy's all right, but my parents' dog Sunday probably not. No, remember Sunday stayed at our house and she broke her leg and she was like four weeks old. Yeah, I know. I had to come and rescue her from your house because you and my sister broke my parents'

dog leg. It jumped off a ledge. No. Yeah, it did. Anyway, moving on. so yeah this probably isn't the app for me but the app connects dog sitters with the people with dogs it just makes sense basically you sign up to the app you choose your prices you set up a profile and then you're good to go um you can dog sit overnight or during the day you know a lot of

people don't like to have their dogs at home their puppies can be menaces so it's better if they're with someone if you have to go into the office um so it works in that way as well and it works really well in that you can meet up with the dog owners the dog sitter and the dog owner can meet up prior to uh the exchange taking place if you will so so that you can be comfortable that your dog is going to someone that you trust um and are happy with so it's quite a cool little app i like that my best friend steph actually uses this app a lot because she's got two beautiful dogs augie and archie and one's a french bulldog and one is a pomeranian cross chihuahua and looks like a fox fox boy anyway when i'm unable to help out and look after fox boy and archie she goes on

paw shake and has had nothing but good experiences and that kind of makes sense because the things we like about it is that paw shake actually only accepts 15 of pet sitter applications because you actually have to apply to be on this platform because obviously if you have a bad pet sitting history like georgia king having broken my parents dog's leg just one time probably not going to make it we should just a disclaimer that georgia did not break the dog's leg she did it in the backyard all by herself and then i had to come and pick her up and do all the vet stuff because i'm the only responsible person please don't cancel me the other thing v that we should add is that it's not just dogs it's all pets pets with paws that's why it's called paw shake my cats have paws bunnies

have paws. It's literally for any pet that you need looking after. In fact, you could add your chickens and get them looked after. And I think it's actually really cool because I know a fair few uni students do it and they just like take their uni work to somebody else's house, look after the dog, use their internet, study, make sure that they're doing well at uni while being paid for it, which I think is quite cool. And at the end of the day, like let's be really brutal. Looking after pets is definitely a commitment. It is definitely hard work. It's not something where you just turn up and fill their bowls. Like they do need engagement and it's not for everybody, but I think it's a pretty good option, especially if you've got a few free hours and

it's flexible. So like you could only accept jobs where you just have to go feed the cat once a day, or you could accept a dog where you actually come and get the dog from somebody else's house and bring it to yours and look after it for an extended period of time. So different horses, the different courses, Georgia King. Love it. And we'll finish off this one with a little chat about the fees, what are they doing, Vy? So, Poor Shake take a 19% cut of your earnings. So, make sure if you're on that platform, you are factoring that into whatever you are going to charge. It seems like 10% to 20% seems the norm for most of the apps that we've chatted about today, which is interesting. Not really. Seems quite reasonable, I feel, especially because you

don't need to do any marketing or branding yourself and there's no business costs that you're going to incur to set yourself up okay um the that actually rounds up all of our apps for today we did want to give honorable mentions to doordash and uber which are also really great ideas make sure if you are on uber and the the cycling delivery options that you're staying safe though i know that's been a point of controversy over the last year or so um so stay safe but they're, of course, always good options as well. Is there anything we should be mindful of when it comes to these apps? Yes. And we've gone through the fees that you need to be mindful of. And I don't think that you need to be wary of them and be like, oh my gosh, they take X amount. I think

it's just making sure that you're making enough money, but also making sure that you've accounted for those fees because there's nothing more heartbreaking than being like, okay, cool. Like I'm going to get a hundred bucks from this. And then they take a 19% cut and you're like, cool. I only get X amount. So I think that that's really important to remember. The next is my friend, all of these are income. All of these are taxable. It's not just a little hobby. I mean, arguably you could ask your accountant. I feel like the survey ones are potentially classified as a hobby because they're so capped and tax says that you can earn up to a certain amount without having to pay tax on it if it's a hobby. In saying that, we know that Uber

and DoorDash and things like that are absolutely not hobbies. They are jobs. So, I would be treating them as such and do not forget to set aside money for these earnings so you're not left with a really rude shock when it comes to tax time. Perfect. All right. So, just to quickly recap, we have PawShake, the dog sitting extravaganza app. We have Pure Profile, the survey website to die for. I don't know why I'm giving them all these little explanations. Who am I? I know. They are going to be very happy with the free promo, though, G. We've got Depop, the one for the hip kids.

We have Airtasker for the manual labour as well as, you know, intellectual labour as well. And then Fiverr, which is great for our freelancers. VD, I think that is all we have time for.
