She's On The Money - Are Your Parents Risking Their Retirement? And a Spicy Wedding Bill Drama

Episode Date: January 22, 2026

Do you ever worry your parents are making bad money decisions… or heading toward retirement totally unprepared? This week’s Friday Drinks starts with the situation where you love your par...ents, they’re adults, and you’re still lying awake wondering whether someone is taking them for a ride. We talk about how to raise money concerns without lecturing or burying your head in the sand. And how to live with the reality that sometimes, even when you say everything right, the decision still isn’t yours. Then there ain't no drama like a wedding money drama, and this one is no exception. A bridal party agreed to pay for $1k for hens and bucks accommodation, and now the story is we can’t afford to pay you back. We get into where responsibility sits, how resentment builds when you absorb costs you didn’t agree to carry, and when being “understanding” just means being out of pocket. Plus we've got money wins, broke tips, and community chaos to finish the week properly. Starting point is 00:01:47 accommodation that they opted into knowing it was at their own cost and are now saying that they can't afford to pay you back oh no oh do you know what my favorite type of drama is wedding drama yeah I was gonna say drama that's not ours any that I'm not involved in yeah and I don't want you involved like if you're going to tell me the drama I don't want it to be like your drama yeah I want you to be telling me the gossip from like John down the street like third hand oh my god is that really what he did I don't even know him that's crazy like that's what I want but before we get into that because like we can talk about wedding drama gossip later would you like to set the tone. Would you like a five-star review? I would love. All right. This review came from our
Starting point is 00:02:28 friend Tamara, who slid into our DMs and said, hi, I wanted to leave a five-star review, but I actually couldn't figure out how to do so. So I've just decided to send you guys a message. I am truly grateful to have come across this powerful community. I've learned so much, so much so that I now share it with the people around me, which feels incredible. V, you've taught me how to understand my finances, how to speak up at work and how to ask for what I deserve. Jess, you've taught me how to see things from other people's perspectives, how to be genuinely kinder and how to recognize my worth in the workplace. And Beck, you've shown me that staying in a job that doesn't value me is not worth it and that no matter what, I'll be fine.
Starting point is 00:03:11 I've recently resigned from my job and I've decided to visit family overseas before I even start looking for a new role i could not be more relaxed about it i know i'm capable i have financial security and i truly believe good things happen to good people yes tomorrow tomorrow you angel i want to be like you it sounds like you are living your best empowered life as you deserve i just love people i love our community i just love that you were like oh i tried to leave a review couldn't work it out but like let's just message you girl we listen and we read every single message that comes through. We reply to every single one of them. It's my favorite thing ever. Takes a lot of time, but I think it's worth it because we love you. Thank you, Tamara. That
Starting point is 00:03:56 is so nice. Isn't it so sweet? Yeah. If you do want to leave a review and you're trying to figure it out, it is on the Apple Podcasts app. You just go to the Apple Podcasts app, you search up the She's The Money podcast, scroll down to the bottom and that's, you can leave your review there. Or you can leave a comment on Spotify. We read those too. Or you can DM us. We'll take what we can get. you could just tell all your friends like in fact my favorite isn't reviews it's when you say oh i've been telling all my friends because like we're just spreading the financial literacies the culture is growing oh my god we need to get better at running a cult because it's not benefiting us in the way that a cult should you know we'll work on that maybe 20 27 goals but
Starting point is 00:04:33 question of the week are you ready ready this is my favorite part of the week you guys get to ask ask us one question you are dying to know it could be literally anything and this one is from Carly who wants to know if you could instantly master any skill what would you choose oh yeah that's so random for me I have this I grew up with a lot of Filipino friends I don't know what it is in the blood of these people every single one of them can sing yes voice of an angel I just I don't know what it is but in my head people who can sing or even just like vaguely carry a tune are good humans like they live better lives I don't know what it is I've always wanted to and I you guys sound like a dying cat like I can't not a single bar actually I want to hear it you
Starting point is 00:05:18 and I sing a lot of Taylor Swift in the car and I've never noticed your voice like we're just in the moment but I get that yeah if I just for no good reason other than I just think it would be really fun how about you yeah well I don't want to say the same thing but just really quickly you really reminded me of Paris Hilton you know how she's talking about how she grew up with a lot of Filipino friends and she's like oh really randomly her her words where she was like talking about Filipino specific things and her words would switch to having like a Filipino accent that's hilarious my friends are the same they would drop in and out because hilarious so I have absolutely the same vein as you because first of all I love the limelight
Starting point is 00:05:56 and so I feel like what better way to capture attention and something that I've always wanted to do is just like just like it's so cool to be able to sing it is just so cool so because you've taken that one I'm gonna say it's really boring but honestly it's like an instrument I think drums there's something about drums that's like so hot you know and so you are up there but you're still a little bit sheltered there's not a lot of pressure on you there's more pressure on the people at the front yeah so I think drums I'm gonna say drums that's a fun one we can start a guys i do i grew up singing a lot of sing star with my sister yes so i could be in the band i'm not very good but i was very good at sing star and sometimes that meant humming at the
Starting point is 00:06:41 right tone to get the backup and i bet you did a great job of it i bet thank you we hacked the system my lad too can i have two of course so my first year is just delusion i would love to master delusion of confidence. I would like to just be so wildly confident, like that I never questioned myself. And I think that that would be really cool. Can you imagine just like mastering confidence? But there's a point where you... No, I don't want arrogance. No, I just want to be confident. Yeah. I want to be so self-aware, but like so confident that like when I'm like, no, I'm putting this out or no, I'm starting this. Cause like I get such bad analysis paralysis. I think that would be cool. And then I also want to master the art of putting things away where I actually meant to put
Starting point is 00:07:23 them away. Is that a skill? It's going to be a skill. I want to be able to put things back where I got them from. Oh, did you get the scissors out of the drawer to do one thing, Victoria? They didn't need to go down the hallway and end up in your office. Where did you leave your keys? I always would know. God bless the AirTag is all I can say. I would always know. So yeah, it's just being able to put things in their place. Yeah. Those are two very good ones. Yeah, very good. the delusional confidence that's the winner yeah I don't want it to like teeter into arrogance that's not what we want but like I just want to be like no I've got this like imagine not even questioning yourself that would be so slay I can't imagine but again I can't imagine all right
Starting point is 00:08:03 absolutely good job guys we're starting a band and we're going to be really confident about it if you've got a question you are dying for us to answer leave it in the comments we want to know and also DM us your questions so that we can answer them maybe on the show. So fun. Miss Jess Gritchy. Yes. Community money wins and confessions, what have you got?
Starting point is 00:08:23 Firstly this week I've got one from Rachel who said, huge win for me. I finally reached $1,000 saved. Living on Centrelink is hard, but I have done it. And I just wanted to say big snaps for you. That's very exciting. Every little bit counts and incredible that you've hit $1,000 now. Next goal, keep going.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Absolutely. That's so good. Next, I've got a money win from Jess, great name, who said she finally had the time, space and energy to do a deep dive into learning about investing, shares and ETFs, and she set herself up with a Vanguard portfolio and budgeted a weekly amount to contribute. Then she said, thank you, She's In The Money, for your incredible podcast and resources to make it all feel less overwhelming. Beautiful.
Starting point is 00:09:02 So cute. Well done, Jess. That's really exciting. Rihanna said, money win, she did a favor for some friends on the weekend and she dog sat and then as a thank you they baked her the most delicious fresh sourdough bread it was so soft and so yummy and she said what goes around really does come around beautiful sweet i've said this before i'm pro favor for favor when did we stop doing favors you know i know just to help people out and it does it comes back around you need to be a villager absolutely i literally could not
Starting point is 00:09:31 agree with that more that's it and then lastly this week i have money mean from me i'm taking a leaf out of beck's book if that's all right i saw that one pass have a really good deal on right now and you guys all know how we feel about one when don't they have a good deal though sorry all of my shipping is free i saved so much actually i did pull it up to share with you we'll get to that we'll get to that so for anyone who's doing like back to school shopping getting ready to go back to work anything like that at the moment if you get a one pass annual membership which is 40 that lasts you the whole year you get a 20 one pass reward to spend it Officeworks so I feel like we're all buying bits and pieces for the office for school whatever at
Starting point is 00:10:09 this time of year so it's perfect to redeem for that yes if you haven't heard of one pass a quick recap for everybody it's a program that has a whole bunch of rewards that ties into places that we all love to shop Kmart Target Bunnings Officeworks the whole the list goes on and so now price lines included and also wildly instant scripts which is so good yeah so the online yeah very cool right? That's so good. Bet you didn't see that coming. No I certainly didn't. The perks include free shipping on eligible online orders from all of your favorite stores and also five times fly by points on eligible orders as well which is crazy. Uncapped. Uncapped. This is insane. Yep that is crazy. Like I've done not a lot of maths on this but a little bit of mental maths and that
Starting point is 00:10:52 doesn't make financial sense for them. But it does for me. It does for me. I'm like I don't know why you're offering this but I'm gonna take it absolutely over Christmas I saved $80.80 on your free delivery just on free delivery alone great and I collected 30,752 bonus points thanks to the five times stop it you've obviously spent a lot more than me because I got my app up as well because I was like you're getting your app up I'm getting my app up I've got 14,406 points from mine and i've saved 60 bucks with free shipping literally how good that for me that's worth 153 flybys dollars that i could redeem for like groceries mine's 72 that's crazy 72 dollars just by making sure that i'm signed up yeah so i paid my my 40 for the year and then i've basically
Starting point is 00:11:45 made 150 dollars not exactly how it works but shopping but we're making money literally no totally there's it's a great time if you want to sign up get that 20 one pass reward to spend to Officeworks. I'll pop a link in the show notes if anyone wants to go check it out. I will say it is humbling because you do go to the app and it does tell you what your recent activity was. And I was like, I do like an online game. I don't know, don't I? I do though. I really do. You're allowed. She's literally just a girl. Yep. Just a girl. Broke tips. Okay. This first one comes from Bea who says that she does a beauty trade-off with her friends, similar to what you were saying jess um she says that they go to one home to do each other's brows and lashes one week
Starting point is 00:12:25 and then the following they go to another person's house and do glamour nails does this this makes sense to you guys yeah she also says if you're not a beauty girl they also do it with plant cuttings and trade them with their friends so they play and cut propagation and all that kind of stuff with each other they're so cute and so beautiful it literally is it feels like this episode's all about being a villager i agree and honestly that's all we need community and village so this next one comes from madeline who says every time i do groceries whatever the receipt says i've saved i transfer that amount into my savings account i don't miss it as i would have spent it on groceries regardless even if it's only a little bit it still adds up very quickly
Starting point is 00:13:06 that's such a great idea that's actually so smart it's such a good idea because like you didn't know what was going to be on sale at the grocery store unless you're like really really good at it and that's why you went different story. But like, what a little hack. Yeah, that's great. And so my one, when you get a new puppy, as we all do all the time, I cannot relate. But for those of you who have ever had a new puppy or you plan on, you can join Pet Barns Puppy Club and every new puppy club member gets a welcome bag packed with hundreds of dollars in discount vouchers for everything puppy related. After you sign up, you just have to pop in store to pick up your bag. that's so good sorry is there a kitten club justice you and i can make a kitten club yeah
Starting point is 00:13:49 everyone can join that's fine you do need prerequisite likes kittens likes kittens or cats cats too yes that's true who's like what nearly 17 i'm like kitten yeah that's still a baby they don't age they do not age that's so true they don't have kitten well i don't have baby club or kitten club and we need to we need to get on that i think yeah fine exactly do you know what other pet related hack tell me my sister got a puppy last year she was cutting her puppy pads in half like you know you get the little puppy pads she's like no i'll cut them in half and i was like you're a genius genius because the dog just goes on the pad right yeah and like usually it's just like during puppy training like he doesn't have them now but like to make sure
Starting point is 00:14:34 that he's not having accidents inside. He had like a little puppy pad, but the puppy pad was so big and the dog was so small that if he peed on it one time, like you'd throw the whole thing away. So she just cut it in half and then two for one deal. Genius. Yeah. Why did I not think about that when I had them for Lucy? Anyway, let's go to a really quick break because on the flip side, we're going to be talking about a dilemma that is all about stressing about your parents' money situation in retirement. And then we're going to get onto something a little bit juicier. What do you do when a couple in your bridal party owe you money for a hens and bucks accommodation. They opted in, they said they'd pay, and now they say that they can't afford to pay you back.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Ah, that would be so frustrating. So don't go anywhere. Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's Money Dilemma. Hi there. Have you got a money dilemma you just can't solve? The She's on the Money team is here to help. Every week, we tackle your dilemmas, both big and small, to answer your most burning money, career and life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website and leave us a short voice recording and you might just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma. Hi, she's on the money. I'm really worried about my parents. They're close to retirement age, but I don't think they'll be able to retire anytime soon.
Starting point is 00:15:59 And over the years, they've fallen for a lot of get-rich-quick schemes and attended all these conferences where people try to sell them coaching packages or seminars that promise wealth. Now they're planning to go to Italy for another one with money they don't have. I don't know how to tell them they should be probably seeing a financial advisor instead of spending what little they have on people who only seem to take advantage of them. has anyone else dealt with something like this and how do you talk to loved ones about this kind of thing without pushing them away i would appreciate some advice thank you bye but there's something so sorry this is really insensitive there's something so cute about the thought of these these two best friends and and and they've probably been married for a long time or like maybe together for a long time and they're both like oh my gosh this sounds exciting and then
Starting point is 00:16:51 they're going to that together and they're they're both together being scammed and then it's really cute from under them because some awful person is trying to take them for all their work i know it's not cute it's not cute but the fact that they're together is kind of cute but they they still they i assume they're kind of like doing this thing where they're talking each other into it because they keep doing it it sounds like and so it's like i don't know how to be very helpful in the situation all i do know is i'm glad they have each other i think you need to get in one person's ear. No, I'm not because they're just perpetuating each other. No, but this is the thing. If you, if you, it sounds like they kind of, I mean, I don't know this for sure, but it
Starting point is 00:17:25 sounds like they, you know, when you have someone who is like talking you into something and you're talking each other into something, I think if you can at least convince one of them, it's not a good idea. Then, then the other will follow. It sounds like, but yeah, I don't know, really know how to be helpful here. It doesn't sound like they are learning their lesson and that's very sad and hard to watch, I imagine. Yeah. Jess, what are you doing? I, if it was me, I'd be saying, oh, can I come with you to the conference like can I come like not the not the internet we're not going to the international conference like the local conference like you don't want to are you going because you like the idea of getting scammed too uh no I'm going because brainwash me as well yeah
Starting point is 00:17:59 let me join the cult no I think if you go with them you can kind of understand what it is maybe that's appealing to them because like typically in these things I think I've been to them because it's fun yeah just for a good time I think like they typically there'll be something specific whether it's the financial security or whether it's the sense of urgency, like invest in this thing. Like if you invest now, you're going to get the most money. They use psychology and they say all the right things. Correct. You've worked so hard your whole life. You deserve this. And they go, yeah, yeah, yeah, do. So if you're there with them, you can kind of figure out what it is that's resonating with them and then undermine that. It would be doing a little bit of tough
Starting point is 00:18:39 love reality check. I would definitely be trying to discourage them from traveling internationally because I think people especially people who are more trusting or more gullible are already at higher risk when traveling internationally there are a lot of it's so scary yeah there's just lots of things that can go wrong even for the most you know seasoned travelers you can be scammed or sucked into things so I just would be really trying to talk them down from that yeah it's so hard because obviously they can do what they want with their money at the end of the day but also if they're not really aware of what's happening to them and you are like it would just be so hard to be a bystander and watch. Yeah. I would be asking for as much information as possible. So
Starting point is 00:19:18 I'd be like, Hey, I'm really scared about this for you. Like my, my policy is just blunt honesty and it's not being rude, blunt honesty. Like we're not going, you're idiots. How did you get caught up in this? Be like, I feel sick in my stomach about this. Totally get that you guys are on board. Can you just send me all the information that you have about it? I'm going to go do a deep dive just to get really comfy with it. Then I'm going to go do a deep dive, going to look into the company going to look into all of this like scammy stuff work it out and then I'm just going to go back to my parents and be like you guys are adults you can make your own decision but it would be a miss of me to not point all of this out there's so much information
Starting point is 00:19:56 online about the like this particular company being a scam this is how that scam works this is what that looks like again you guys can do whatever you want but I think that you are going to seriously compromise your future. I think you're being taken for a ride. If you're willing to invest that amount in this, like, can we maybe find a logical financial advisor? Can we maybe put it into something else? Like, it's not just scaring me, but like, I think you're going to be taken advantage of. And scams these days, they look and feel so real. Like in 2026, that is exactly what happens. It's been happening for ages. Like people are replicating the ATO mum, people are replicating ASIC people are being taken for a ride because they genuinely believe in it
Starting point is 00:20:39 and I get it it's not because you're silly it's because they are playing to your emotions yeah like this has nothing to do with anybody in the room being dumb yeah nobody is silly but you are being taken advantage of and it's literally making me so angry like I want to call this company and tell them off I think that's where I would go with it because like yeah I'm not trying to breadcrumb sorry if I think you're being scammed I'm not like oh I kind of spoke up and I said that I wasn't comfortable with it when your parents are like hey we got scammed this is so crazy like I wish someone had told us though I'm being so aggressive like and in a kind way like mum I'm saying this with kindness it's not because you've been you know taken advantage of because you're
Starting point is 00:21:21 silly it's literally because this is their game like they have spent probably years planning this to make sure that they get enough money out of it. So like, mum, please don't do this for the love of God. And then you can at least live with the peace that you very clearly outlined why it was a scam, how it was a scam, what that looked like. You don't have to go, oh, let me come to the event and I'll see what it's like.
Starting point is 00:21:44 Like, we already know it's a scam. I've told you, now do with that information what you will. Because again, like you don't want to hear this when you're like the daughter or the son and you're trying to protect your parents. but they are also adults that are free to make any decision they want. You can lead a horse or whatever. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:22:03 So can we please get into the DM? Yes, please. All right. So I got a DM this week. Hi, she's on the money. Our wedding is in three months. We asked our bridal party over a year ago and we were really clear that we'd cover almost everything, including accommodation, since the wedding was out of town.
Starting point is 00:22:22 All we asked was that they cover their outfits and bring their own shoes because the dresses the girls chose ended up being way outside our original budget. For the bucks and the hens, we kept everything super low cost, under $50 per head, and said people could stay with us in local accommodation for that if they wanted to, but that part would be at their expense if they wanted to do that. One bridesmaid and one groomsman couple agreed to all of this and chose to stay with us for both events, which was so nice. We paid up front and just asked if everyone could pay us back when they could. Now between them, they owe us a thousand dollars and have told us, yeah, we can't afford to pay that. We won't be doing that. What should
Starting point is 00:23:04 we be doing? Oh my goodness. This makes me so angry. I know. It feels like they've been so clear. Yeah. And they've like done everything they can. We talk a lot about like, you should keep the costs low for people participating in a wedding. They've done that. And then it's just the optional thing. And they're like, for the wedding, we'll pay for your accommodation. Don't worry but for this other thing like you can stay with us in the accommodation will cost you more or you don't have to I feel like that's really thoughtful that's very reasonable too so I can imagine if you are not fully across because I kind of got confused there I was like are they so they're paying for everything except for the you know the clothes obviously you have to help
Starting point is 00:23:42 pay for the accommodation that you're all staying in together so they had to pay for the clothes that was it. No, but there's accommodation. So to participate in the wedding, they covered all the costs of like accommodation for the wedding. When they went for the hens, they said, you can stay with us if you want to. I'm assuming what's happened is the bride and groom gone. Well, we're going to have a big night out and then we want to stay in a hotel or something afterwards. If anyone wants to stay with us, like you can grab a room at the same place. You'll just have to pay for your own room. And so it sounds like the majority of people said, oh, like not in my budget or like I just want to go home. And only one bridesmaid and one groomsman which were a
Starting point is 00:24:16 couple said yeah we will and it might have been like an Airbnb situation. I feel like this is how it would have worked because like otherwise we would have been like staying at this hotel and then Jess you would have booked your own room. True. True. So like I'm assuming that they're like oh do you want to stay with a great no worries we'll book accommodation we're going to pick this Airbnb you've got the extra room or it's coming to a thousand dollars and they're like yep yep yep but like you can't split Airbnb booking so I put it all on my card you agreed to pay me because it was a separate event. Yeah. I just, I'm like, how, how would it come to that much? But anyway, I guess it's a story for another time, but that's like, that still feels like
Starting point is 00:24:50 weekend. Yeah. It still feels exorbitant for like a weekend, but I like, I guess maybe if you like going somewhere that's really, really lovely, I can, I can see how that would come to that much. So it really, it's completely obviously not on you that someone else hasn't like taken the time to look into how much it's actually going to cost. No, they knew, they knew. So if I said to you, Beck, hey, I'm going away with my husband for the weekend. Do you and Jess want to come? You go, yeah, that sounds lit. And I go, well, accommodation is going to be a thousand dollars. Let's pretend that's completely fair with you. And you go, yeah, Jess and I happy to pay 500 bucks each because that's $250 a night or whatever. Happy to pay this. And then we go, we have a great weekend.
Starting point is 00:25:29 And then I go, hey, Beck, can you just transfer me? Because like I already told you that you were paying for your own accommodation. There's no question about that. And you go, we can't afford it. Totally. That is not at all on you guys. I think that it, on the one hand, I understand the anxiety of realizing that I can't actually afford something later on down the track, but that's not at all on you guys. It is entirely on the person who agreed to do this. I think that if, and it seems like you are quite close if they just, if they agreed to stay with you both times, it's like, oh, they seem like good friends. So you don't want to lose this friendship. I would say, you know and I've borrowed money from friends millennia millions of times for my whole life and
Starting point is 00:26:07 so I know the feeling of like being like oh god I don't know when I can pay this back so I think just having a very honest and transparent and like money doesn't have to be so taboo money doesn't have to be so like a thing you know just be like you can just be talking about it as though you would be like hey can I borrow your pants this weekend because I like the way they're sewn or something like it doesn't have to be so big but if you can afford it letting them know that a payment plan or a payment structure would work for you. Just that way you don't have to like ruin your whole friendship over it. But I think if you're like, what about like, how about 50 bucks a week? Does that work for you guys? And they're like, maybe that'd be like,
Starting point is 00:26:42 yeah, that would be great. And then you don't have to worry. If they don't, it probably is a friendship that you have to like, always resentment will build. You just can't be friends with someone who's like literally refusing to pay you. You know, you have more grace than I do. Jess, what would you do? I agree. The thing that I'm not understanding is them turning around and just saying, oh, well, we're not going to pay that because you've agreed to pay it. And like, that is to me deeply unfair. Like it was an optional thing you elected to join. My understanding is that you knew what the cost would be upfront, different story if the cost was not communicated, but based on what we've been told, my assumption is that you have been told the cost. It's just
Starting point is 00:27:17 nuts to me that you would then go, I agree. Like if something had happened, Bec, and as you said, like someone had lost their job or some extenuating circumstance, understand that things happen and a payment plan is a good option but I think like you do kind of have to turn around and be like hey no it's not fair for me to pay for this cost that you chose to participate in like lots of other people had the option they said no because they didn't want to or they didn't have the money or whatever the reason was you wanted to participate like I am not fronting the cost for you for that like it no I don't see how there's any really room to be delicate with it if I'm honest no no and I I feel maybe I'm in a blunt mood who knows but like if I said hey Jess
Starting point is 00:28:00 and this is a different story but like hey Jess I'm buying myself a Dyson Airwrap I'm gonna put it through the order yeah and you go oh my god I'd love a Dyson Airwrap too what a coincidence I would that's crazy um we both love Dyson Airwraps I'll put it in my order like to save shipping or something yeah and so you're purchasing a product and you go I'll transfer you and I go thanks Jess no worries and then I come home got my package give you Dyson Airwrap and then a couple of weeks goes by and I go hey can you just transfer me for the Airwrap and you go oh I can't afford it anymore yeah like that's unacceptable like I'm really sorry but you agreed to the cost and like this is assuming that what our and it you know there's three sides to every story there's your
Starting point is 00:28:40 side my side and the truth but we've only been given our community members side of the story and she says she was really clear about that cost I was really clear with you Jess that the Airwrap that you wanted to purchase and just save some money on shipping was a thousand dollars yeah you do not get to come back to me that's not my problem no like you did a nice thing you owe me a thousand dollars yeah same thing happens if I go hey I'm going away for the weekend I'm getting accommodation you guys go go ahead I'm not spending a thousand dollars on accommodation great don't yeah don't but don't say yeah great no worries Jess I'd love to spend a thousand dollars on accommodation you use that service and then come back to me and go oh I can't afford it
Starting point is 00:29:24 so why did you say yes and why is this now my cost yeah why is this mine now it's not like you went into debt for it because if you'd put that thousand dollars for the air wrap or a thousand dollars for the accommodation on your credit card you don't get to call up the credit card company and say hey like oh I can't afford that full stop no you owe somebody money yeah if you don't want to incur that expense you were given the option to not incur it yeah what did everybody else think okay so first I asked them some questions because I need to know the juice um what would you do if you were our community member 51% of you said organize a payment plan or adjust the amount which I think is crazy interesting I just think if I if I owe you a thousand dollars Jess I don't
Starting point is 00:30:09 not owe you a thousand dollars just because i've decided i don't yeah the only thing i would say is like if your friend couldn't pay you because they're like oh my god i've just like defaulted on my mortgage i'm homeless whatever it's a different story yeah 23 said no i'm just staying firm on you repaying me 15 said you'd let it go and 11 said i'm reassessing the whole friendship i then asked would you give someone more grace for money they owed you if it was for your wedding 49 said yes but only to avoid drama 33 said no they made a commitment and 18 said yeah it's my wedding well it's kind of awkward because it's like well what are they going to mean the bridal party and then you're gonna it's in three months yeah but it's all good i just think it's so wild
Starting point is 00:30:53 and don't get me wrong i have a whole different opinion about weddings and maybe we can do another wedding episode because i just feel like wedding costs have gone through the roof i'm like looking at all these people making like tiktok content and they're saying like i'm a 2026 bride or i'm a 2027 bride and I'm just like looking at these costs being like I spend a lot on my wedding but those are astronomical what are you talking about like it is so stressful so maybe that content needs to come and we need more wedding drama but they then said what is your two cents so first cab off the rank nothing to add just got engaged recently and I'm just really hoping to avoid any type of drama like this understandable next person said unless something significant
Starting point is 00:31:32 happened you need to stay firm agree someone else said did they say why like did some expected thing come up that they had to pay for another person said just be honest tell them you also can't afford to lose a thousand dollars and that they need to pay back the money I think that's a great perspective another person said it's very poor etiquette from the couple who owe money but also making people pay for their own outfits isn't ideal but I also don't think that comes into it yeah i was gonna say that's a whole other that's like a different part of the wedding conversation i think and like i'm trying to be really segmented another person said how is it low cost if they owe a thousand dollars same as you beck which is fair totally but like every other wedding i'm not like
Starting point is 00:32:16 just justifying it from message we got every other wedding expense was low cost this was like probably some bougie accommodation that they're like you guys don't have to come we're gonna go and stay at this particular place, but I'm assuming that instead of just getting the one-bedroom villa, they got like a two-bedroom villa and then like that would have increased the cost significantly, right? Which again is why it was optional. Yeah. Yeah, we're not talking about like, oh, you have to come to my hands,
Starting point is 00:32:41 you have to stay the night because she said the rest of the wedding party didn't. Yeah. Yeah. Next said, people are unreliable. If they can't give you the money at the time, usually they can't commit to it later either. It's a very pessimistic take.
Starting point is 00:32:55 And I'll give you the last one. It's shit like this that made me glad I eloped. Fair. Honestly. Absolutely. I think that's really funny and probably a great place to leave it. So, guys, we will see you bright and early on Monday morning for a money diary.
