Starting point is 00:00:00 She's on the money. She's on the money. Hello and welcome to a very special bonus episode of She's on the money, the podcast for millennials who want financial freedom. My name's Joanna Fleming, the beauty editor and co-host of Adore Beauty's podcast, Beauty IQ Uncensored, and I'm joined today by my co-host Hannah First and your finance friends victoria divine and georgia king now we're experts on all things beauty and you may have heard us before on our beauty iq uncensored podcast and today we're
Starting point is 00:00:37 joining forces with she's on the money to answer your burning beauty on a budget questions so we can hopefully come away with a greater understanding of where we should be spending more money when it comes to beauty and where we can afford to save some money it'll be a little bit of a relaxed q and a we might go a little bit rogue here who really knows in traditional she's on the money style georgia king will ask our questions today and we will do our best to answer them now i'm going to hand the mic over to victoria divine victoria hello joanna hello for those of you who haven't met joanna she started her career working in marketing and admin with plastic and cosmetic surgeons while studying journalism like our friend georgia king so she has a very deep
Starting point is 00:01:17 understanding of skincare and of professional treatment she's been in the beauty industry for almost eight years and has been with Adore for almost four years. Now, our other friend here is Hannah and she is the glorious co-host of Adore Beauty's podcast. And Hannah is Adore's resident beauty newbie. Before working with Adore, Hannah was traveling the world with just one tube of Jolique moisturizer, washed her face with water and used olive oil as a deep conditioning treatment, which I'm sure we can all relate to. And how times have changed friends now, just like me she's an absolute serum addict and again just like me is probably aspect skincare's number one fan as joe said before these legends are joining us to help make sense of the beauty messes you
Starting point is 00:01:58 guys may have found yourselves in so without further ado let's jump straight into our questions georgia king it is your time to shine hello thank you um joe you did way too good a job of that intro i feel like i may be out of a job now but uh i would love to be able to say that i took someone from adore beauty yet i just don't think my tiny podcast is up for that so i'm not very good at numbers no that's fine that's fine but let's like get into the questions so we can learn a little bit more and be a little bit more beauty savvy i'm so excited for this yeah so all of these questions came from our community as well and there are quite a few here so we will dive straight in ladies the first one we have is what skincare items should you invest in and which
Starting point is 00:02:46 ones should we choose the cheaper option for? Okay. It's a good question. I like this question. I get this a lot actually. And the truth is that the things that you can save on are generally the basics. So your cleanser, your moisturiser and your SPF. There's always cheaper options of those things. Your cleanser is on your face for the least amount of time. You can find some pretty good cheap moisturisers to be honest. And with your SPFs, even your SunSense ones are great. you don't necessarily have to spend 60 bucks on a tube of sunscreen for it to be effective as long as it's an SPF 50. And then the things that you probably want to invest in, Hannah, I think you'll agree is your active serums. So your retinols, your vitamin C's, things that probably take a
Starting point is 00:03:29 little bit more science to formulate. That's probably where I'd be spending the big bucks. Yeah. I said the exact same thing was I said that you could spend less on a cleanser and a moisturizer. But the two things that I would definitely invest in are a good quality vitamin C serum. The other thing I was going to say, Jo, was do you remember when I bought that over the counter prescription retinoid that was really cheap? In Thailand. Yes. So the reason I think the number one ingredient that I would spend more on is retinol because retinol can be really, really irritating on the skin. And as I found out, my skin just went completely red. but you can get you know good quality retinols that are formulated for sensitive skin and i
Starting point is 00:04:15 would say that's where i want to invest my money in so that my skin doesn't have a complete freak out when i'm using a more irritating ingredient so we're on the same page joe yeah i'm actually so excited to hear that because i've been on the podcast and i don't know if you guys have heard it but i keep talking about my cancer council sunscreen and it is spf 50 but i'm obsessed with it because I just really like the texture of it under my makeup and I was really worried that you guys were gonna say you have to spend a lot of money on sun cream no as long as it's broad spectrum you're good okay all right I'm very very excited to hear that and also on cleanser I'm very good at spending a lot of money on that I just feel like it's a really lux item I mean I
Starting point is 00:04:57 spend a fair bit of money on cleanser I buy like a $50 cleanser but the truth is you could get the ordinary one for what like $12.90 and that's still a great cleanser I really like that as well I've got that at the moment and I found that like I can't complain at the end of the day you do wash it down with the sink so maybe exactly it does make sense to save a bit of money there but Georgia King given we have a number of questions to get through what is our next one yeah let's keep it moving I feel like we've got lots we do there's a lot to this episode okay so second question ladies do we really need a separate moisturizer for our face body hands nails or is that just marketing at its finest I don't think you necessarily need a different moisturizer for
Starting point is 00:05:36 your body and your hands or nails, but definitely for your face, I would say your face has the highest concentration of sebaceous glands or oil glands and your body has less. So your body tends to get drier. So you'll find that body moisturizers or lotions are a mixture of like humectant, emollient and occlusive ingredients. So that might be nourishing oils, or it might have a balmy texture that'll be too thick for the skin on our face. And often you'll find that in cosmeceutical moisturizers like one of our favorites aspect phytostat 9 that there are lots of beautiful active ingredients that can target different skin concerns and different skin types and a lot of moisturizers will be made for certain skin types and concerns
Starting point is 00:06:19 joanna we were talking the other day and you know you will have to pry my phytostat 9 from my cold dead body like it is my favorite thing in this whole entire world and i know you said that you can save on moisturizer and you definitely can but like that is one of my splurge items that you cannot stop me buying finding a moisturizer that you love is actually quite challenging so if you do find one that you love and it's a bit more expensive go for it but like yeah I mean I'm I'm not gonna stop using phytostatinine no no no neither don't you worry but you and I both also you said something that a skincare junkie like me understands and that's cosmeceutical but for those of us listening who maybe still use olive oil as a conditioning
Starting point is 00:07:01 treatment. Could you please explain what that actually means and why it's important? So for anyone who isn't sure what a cosmeceutical is, basically the name comes from a blend of pharmaceutical and cosmetic. So essentially a cosmeceutical is something that you would find ranged in a clinic that's used in a clinic setting or has a high concentration of active ingredients. And often these brands spend a lot of money on scientific research. It's all about getting results in the skin so they do differ quite a lot from the things that you can buy at the chemist or the supermarket and obviously that's reflected in the price point as well which we kind of touched on with the aspect moisturizer it's very pricey but it's awesome
Starting point is 00:07:41 absolutely would you say joe like if you had to choose between a serum or a cosmeceutical moisturizer if like you were on a budget and you had to pick one or the other where are you spending your money theorem i can answer for her yeah thanks anna yeah there you go that's my answer i'm and i'm the same i'm the same yeah all right so next question for you ladies is it really necessary to replace products at their used by dates so like when a mascara or moisturizer says used by three months after opening i was actually gonna let joe answer this one because she's much more down on the sciencey stuff what do you reckon And I know that mascara, because if you're using something around your eyes, you don't
Starting point is 00:08:26 want to keep using the same thing over and over, particularly on an area like your eyes. But Joelle, I'll hand over to you for this one. Yeah, so we recently did an episode with Dr. Michelle Squire on product storage and something that I taught Hannah very early on was the little icon on your beauty products. So there's a little icon on the back of your beauty products under where all of the instructions are and all of the ingredients are. and it'll generally say like 12 months, three months, six months. And that gives you a guide of how long that product will last once it's opened. So that's once you've like pulled the
Starting point is 00:08:59 seal off, you started using it from then is how long that product is tested to be safe for use. So if it does start to go over that time, I would be monitoring changes in the smell, in the texture, in the color of the product. And if that stuff does start to change, that's probably a sign that that product is starting to go off but particularly with ingredients like vitamin c's they oxidize really quickly which means they're affected by exposure to air so often those kind of products will only last or be effective for three months anyway so there's no point in you using it after that really because you're putting something on your skin that isn't really able to do much but when it comes to mascara hannah as you said like
Starting point is 00:09:41 there's a build-up of bacteria with mascara but also they dry out very quickly because you're pulling the wand out and a lot of people pump their mascara as well and you're just pumping more air in so they get clumpy and they start to not look as good as they did when you first opened it joe and i both say this is that mascara is one of those things that you can kind of go more affordable on so both of us use mascaras from l'oreal paris and maybelline and they're both i think maybelline they're like classic mascaras maybe 12 or 13 dollars i think yeah probably around that yeah it's it's if you if you if you want to go more affordable on the mascara there's some awesome mascaras that won't break the bank I'm obsessed with designer brands for
Starting point is 00:10:22 anyone that is like into pharmacy stuff I love designer brands obsessed with their foundation love all of their like eyeshadow palettes and all of that stuff they're so good oh my gosh like completely off topic and not on the question list but have you guys recently used that flower beauty range no but we've heard about it one of our guests was saying that their lipstick is amazing oh my gosh I'm obsessed with it like I went I think it was chemist warehouse had like a 50% off sale and I was like why not we love a chemist warehouse shout out we always we do we we talk about them all the time so there was a 50% sale on it and I ended up just being like you know what I'm in isolation I'm playing with new makeup their foundation is
Starting point is 00:11:07 flawless the reason I bought it is because there was a lot of talk on the beauty forums that I I frequent which is probably a little known fact about me that it is a dupe for the Armani silk foundation and I am telling you right now I own both and I adore both it is so good their concealer is really good albeit it does oxidize slightly and their lip treatments oh my gosh the lip treatments like I think it's like 10 bucks or less like money win the ordinary is obviously the budget skincare brand but is it as good as we think it is i am because you said here about what are the pros and cons so for me like the biggest con is the biggest pro so because you're gonna have to read up on ingredients so if you want to use the ordinary and you want to like use it
Starting point is 00:11:56 properly you're gonna have to get really skincare savvy because each of their serums is a different ingredient and you may need to layer multiple serums so if you're a minimalist um you may end up with more more i guess steps in your routine because instead of getting one serum that has niacinamide and you know all the different ingredients that you want you just have the niacinamide as a serum on its own so i personally think that that is a good thing because i love learning about skincare so that's just me but um i remember when i first discovered it i was like what is niacinamide like i don't even know where to begin so you've got to start reading up on it doesn't say like hydration okay hannah but what is niacinamide yes joel hand that one over to you
Starting point is 00:12:44 i trust you back yourself in hannah you know it it's b3 so it's vitamin b3 not b5 that's right joe yeah panthenols yeah so vitamin b3 it helps um with oil production and soothes the skin and protects your skin's barrier i feel like i got that right you did well done gold star gold star for hammer i'm really impressed but i'm definitely not in a position to correct you with you either so niacinamide great the ordinary great but like why are they so much cheaper than every other skincare brand and, you know, how are they able to be so cheap in comparison? Is everybody else just taking us for a bit of a ride? Yeah, that is a really good question. That's something that comes up a lot. And just to touch on Hannah's point as well, I think a mistake that
Starting point is 00:13:34 a lot of people make is just buying the entire range because it's cheap without checking that the products they're buying are actually suitable for their skin type or are going to target their concerns. You're just, even if it is cheap, you are wasting money buying unnecessary products that you probably don't need. You might need five products from their range to see good results, but you probably don't need 14. But I think that's a mistake a lot of people make. But when it comes to the affordability of the brand, they save money by saving on marketing, saving on packaging, and by using formulas that are tried and tested formulas. They're things that they're combinations of ingredients that we know work well together, or they're isolated ingredients that don't require
Starting point is 00:14:15 a lot of scientific research to go into them to be able to formulate them into an effective formula we had an episode with one of the co-founders and she explained it really well she likened it to your generic aspirin so aspirin's been around for a really really long time so when you think about that single ingredient you know it's been around and it's tried and tested as joe said so they haven't you know the amount of scientific research that needs to go into it it doesn't need it because it's tried and tested yeah yeah and the reason that your cosmeceutical ranges are more expensive is because it takes a lot of scientific research and that's very expensive when they're formulating brand new products and um you know formulas that
Starting point is 00:14:58 have never been used before an ingredient combination that have never been used before exactly in the delivery systems there you go hannah you pick everything up you act like you don't know that you know that you do well well it's interesting because Deciem who own the ordinary have a sister brand called Neod and Neod is at that like a higher price point and that's because they've got a lot of scientific research going into these formulations and the delivery systems of their serums so yeah even Deciem have their own their own kind of sister brand that's at that higher price oh I kind of love that because that's like a money win you guys are essentially saying it's like buying you know the home brand because you don't get so caught up on
Starting point is 00:15:40 you know the branding and the marketing you just want the job to do the job like you're going to go buy paracetamol it's going to be the same active ingredients it's going to do the same job it'll get rid of your headache but what you're saying is there's a skincare brand for that and that's kind of awesome especially for our community who are young they are us and you know we don't have endless amounts of money to just spend on serum after serum. Like everybody knows this already, but I'm obsessed with skincare. So the amount of time I spend looking at it, but some serums can be like hundreds of dollars. And at the end of the day, that's actually not reasonable to expect that everybody in our community is actually able to afford to, you know, spend hundreds of
Starting point is 00:16:19 dollars on 10 different serums to have on their nightstand. Like it just doesn't make sense. So I love that. I love that so much. But Georgia King, do we have another question? I bet we do. So sidestepping a little bit here, do eye serums and masks actually do anything? Are they worth spending our money on? Or are they just like really fancy things that we can do and take photos of and put them on Facebook and Instagram? Is that a thing? I mean, Jo, you would be able to reference that episode that we did on eye serums, that they're not actually 100% necessary it's a nice to have but I would say for this question is any beauty necessary like I don't feel like any beauty is actually necessary but I love a sheet mask I just love them and there's
Starting point is 00:17:07 even affordable ones and I was going to say the L'Oreal Paris Revitalift filler re-plumping and smoothing sheet masks they're really affordable and it's just it really gives your skin such a big drink of water when it needs it. So that's my view. Jo? Yeah, I definitely second your comments around the eye cream slash serum. I do have an eye serum that I absolutely love though. And it's that Murad dark circle corrector. And that actually made a difference for me and nothing that ever targets dark circles really makes a difference. So that was amazing. But we did speak to a dermatologist that said that pretty much you can take your active serums as long as they're not resurfacing under the eyes and still get that nice hydration and plumping effect that you would get
Starting point is 00:17:50 from using an eye serum. But when it comes to masks, I always get asked what my favorite clay or mud masks are. And I don't have a skin type for a clay or mud mask because I'm not oily, I'm not congested. So I think a lot of people expect the mask that they see advertised on Instagram to fix 10 years worth of acne. And it's just not going to. Don't fall for marketing all the time always do your own research and see if that product is actually suitable for your skin type and your concerns because if i used a clay mask my skin would dry the f out so um i just prefer to use something really hydrating but i do love a mask victoria i am obsessed with the aspect probiotic mask so i'm sure you can back that one up i literally have it sitting beside
Starting point is 00:18:38 me because my friends at aspect were so kind and sent me a few gifts and that is one of them and I opened it and I saw it and I was stoked honestly I was so excited to see another tub because I'm nearly out of my first one but I also think guys we missed a massive opportunity here all of us are Melbourne based all of us are currently podcasting from home and we totally could have all be wearing face masks doing this I just feel like we missed that opportunity I turn up to meetings with sheet masks I turned up um with this Estee Lauder do this power foil mask which is just oh it's like so luxe and beautiful and I turned up to a meeting wearing it and I was like hey sorry but like I've got something on later I need to wear I need to put a sheet mask on oh my gosh we don't we don't
Starting point is 00:19:26 do that I mean I send my team skincare but I've never actually said to them let's turn up to the meetings with our sheet masks on Georgia I just feel like next week's podcast recording is gonna to look a little bit different could be a thing I'm so here for that just on the masks guys I I actually don't think I've ever done one like are you okay have you have you sorry um have you even been in lockdown you're not living your best life but also just call something out here Georgia I've literally gifted you sheet masks it's still in my room um but so how regularly are we doing though is that like a once a week once a day once a year never um I think once a week I mean I've overdone the masks and ended up with like you know you don't want to overdo any of your skincare
Starting point is 00:20:22 because I've been in that situation and you end up with an impaired barrier so I would say once a week that's enough for me especially if you've got not that you do at the moment but if you've got a big event on sheet mask the night before to prep your skin I would agree with that great recommendation great recommendation because I also want to give myself more permission to do more sheet masks this is your permission thank you my friend but also the idea that we'll have events one day again soon maybe so just to really attract you love it okay moving on now to budget friendly sunscreens that don't feel greasy or heavy? We mentioned earlier, there's quite a few that are affordable, but what are your go-tos? Well, my personal go-tos aren't necessarily what
Starting point is 00:21:06 we'd say are affordable, I don't think. Hannah and I both- I want to hear them all though. I want to hear them all. And we'll talk about affordable and not affordable. Like, do you have a favorite though? Yeah, spill the beans. Come on. I'm sorry, but this is the one thing that I can't go budget on is my sunscreen. Because I'm like, like you said, Victoria, I'm super fussy about texture and finish i've tried pretty much every sunscreen under the sun and it's such a um personal thing sunscreen so i actually think instead of saving on the spf why don't you have your spf for your moisturizer and your primer as well ultraviolet do skin screens which have skincare benefits and they work well with your makeup too so i think that is like a good option
Starting point is 00:21:48 i think they're 40 they're 42 but that's your moisturizer and your spf and your primer all in one so um i use their supreme screen yeah so i win that's like 15 bucks per product that's pretty much price line prices yeah and you're getting the quality you will i assure you like if you haven't used ultraviolet supreme screen like it is everyone that i speak to that's tried it like can't go back once you go i've seen yeah once i've seen all of the reviews online i think i'm gonna have to order some because the people that do use it it's like a cult item yeah i swear when it first came out i tried to order it and it was sold out on their website and now i think the hype hasn't died down but they've probably been able to uh provide more product i should actually order
Starting point is 00:22:39 it because i'm such an advocate of wearing sunscreen 24 7 or when you're even going near a window um so no i think that's gonna be one of my you won't well with this one you won't feel like wearing sunscreen you'll feel like you're wearing a really nice moisturizer it's beautiful yeah and it smells nice as well so this is the thing for me i don't want smell i don't want taste i don't want it to smell or feel or look like sunscreen i just want it to be like a moisturizer and this one feels like a really nice moisturizer this is my aspect fighter stuff this is my version i feel like you guys are going to make my skincare routine incredibly expensive because i've got my spider stat and I've also got my budget cancer council sunscreen which I currently like and I'm
Starting point is 00:23:22 going to try a more expensive sunscreen and we're just like slowly upping the ante and having a little bit of lifestyle creep within my beauty skincare range so look I'm not mad about it but like I probably need to control myself there's nothing like an investment in skincare though at least when you're investing in skincare you know it's a long-term investment just to put a little finance talk in there i love that i love that this is so relevant no i love it or joe and i always talk about because we we're like always conscious of i guess prices when we talk about things on the podcast we always say cost per cost per use so like if you invest in it if you invest in like a really good electrical item and it's going to cause less damage on your hair like it's
Starting point is 00:24:05 a cost per use i always think about it like that just like a cost per wear i think that that is absolutely fair I'm gonna take it and I'm gonna run with that question before we justify ourselves out of it I do okay so which products are essential in a typical beauty routine which order do we put them on in and what does a morning versus nighttime routine look like so quite a big question that is a pretty big question but I think it really needs to come down to what your needs are for your skin um I tend to avoid posting my exact skincare routines because I don't want people to go out and purchase everything that I use thinking that their skin is going to need the same stuff that mine does because it's not always the case I'm never going to look like you
Starting point is 00:24:50 like I would buy every product under the sun to look like you and like if you posted your skincare routine promise I'd go buy it I just I get a lot of people saying like oh can you post more of your routines because they want to buy everything that I'm using. And I'm sure the same goes for you, Hannah. A lot of people want to know exactly what you're using, but they may not necessarily have the same skin type or concerns that you do. So the products that you use really should come down to what your concerns are and what your skin type is. And you can be as basic or as complex as you want to be depending on your budget. As we said earlier, like with The Ordinary, you can buy six products from their range, and that'll probably cost you under 50 bucks. And you'll still see
Starting point is 00:25:31 some really, really good results and be taking care of your skin. Or you can spend $500 on a cosmeceutical routine and still have amazing results on your skin. And it just really is personal preference as to what you use. In a general sense with ingredients or products, I would be using your antioxidants and vitamin Cs in the morning with your SBS. And then in the evening using your resurfacing acids like your AHAs and glycolic acids and retinols at night because they tend to make you a bit more sensitive to the sun. So keep those at night, put your vitamin Cs in the morning with your SPF and anything else can kind of be relatively flexible like your hyaluronic acids and your vitamin Bs can be used at both times of the day.
Starting point is 00:26:12 I also have a question to just like weasel in here. I've heard, and I know this is true, but I don't know which one of it is. But what skincare products can't we mix together? Are there like some nightmare matches made in hell? I don't know. It's more just around what's going to cause irritation on the skin. So mixing your acids like AHAs with retinol in most skin types will cause a little bit of irritation. However, in some skins that are a bit thicker or they're really accustomed to active ingredients, you could probably get away with using those two together and then probably avoiding your vitamin Cs with your retinols as well, because they are both highly stimulating ingredients on the skin so using your vitamin c in the morning is that's a
Starting point is 00:26:53 better time to use your vitamin c anyway but splitting those up at different times of the day but there really isn't much else that you can't use together to be honest all right we're getting to the end now guys uh so question eight what are the best value for money brands that are also cruelty free because that did come up quite a bit in the thread on our facebook group yeah so obviously the ordinary are up there you'd actually be surprised by how many brands are cruelty free now a lot of our favorite cosmeceutical brands are cruelty free alpha h asap aspect a lot of our australian brands are and then you've got brands like walida which i love their skin food um dr bronner's i use to wash my brushes but that's like a multi-use um castile soap um
Starting point is 00:27:38 grown alchemist is great as well hannah did you have any i was gonna say yeah i had salt by Hendrix was one that's another Aussie brand but one that I was going to say that's actually look it's not it's not like the ordinary price point but biology is a really good one because their whole philosophy is you only need their one serum this is a really foreign concept for me when I first heard it but you just need one serum and you don't actually put a moisturizer over the top you just use your SPF so if you're looking to pare back your routine I think biology is a really good one that is also cruelty free I love that idea but you could not convince me to get rid of my yeah that's what we said we spoke to one of the founders and we were like yeah no that's not
Starting point is 00:28:24 gonna happen yeah like I love that I love that no I use it for travel for travel it's really good because you only need to take one serum when you travel that's actually quite yeah I like that maybe it does fit into my routine in some which way but yeah again cold dead hands pride out so i feel like we know the answer to this next question but is it worth spending money on cosmeceutical brands like victoria joe and hannah's favorite aspect in my opinion yes it is but that's the background that i've come from and i've been using cosmeceutical since i was 18 i'm 27 now so i still looks 18 guys if the results don't speak for themselves and now joe looks 12 um i really do believe in cosmeceuticals and some of these brands just put so much effort
Starting point is 00:29:16 into formulating these amazing products that have such an amazing impact on the skin i think when it comes to price point though cosmeceuticals aren't in reach for everybody and that's a real shame because they are amazing products but that's where brands like the ordinary come in and can kind of meet you halfway but as we said before about the ordinary they're isolated ingredients. So you might be having to buy five of their serums for one cosmeceutical serum to get the same kind of ingredient mix. So that's kind of how I would frame my answer to that without saying how much I really love cosmeceuticals. Hannah, what do you reckon? I was going to say it's personal preference. Just for myself, I've seen incredible results
Starting point is 00:29:58 using brands like ASAP and Aspect. And I think for me, I find that I get less irritation from using those products and I also did skin scans pre and post starting on like a whole new aspect routine because I had very very bad sun damage and I was really blown away by the results but what I would say is the best ingredient that you can use for anything like sun damage or anti-aging is SPF so I think the thing that we've reached yeah I think the thing that Jo and I have learned or the thing I learned is that of all the ingredients that you should be using you need SPF is your number one. So there's absolutely no point at all in using cosmeceuticals. If you're not using an SPF daily, there's zero point. You're just throwing money down the drain.
Starting point is 00:30:41 You're not protecting your face from the harsh Australian sun. Yeah. We're on the same page. Georgia, you're looking a little bit guilty over there. Prevention is better than having a cure for it. But Joanna, I actually do want to go back to a point that you made before that was really important to me and probably to the greater she's on the money community and that is that this stuff is sometimes not accessible by everybody and this is such a luxury to have and whilst we're talking about you know loving our moisturizer and stuff like that does not mean it is expected that absolutely everybody goes out and has a beauty routine like if you're interested in this then fantastic but if you're not it is actually
Starting point is 00:31:18 a really privileged position for us to be in to be able to you know spend our income on beauty in skincare when that's a privilege denied to a lot of people. So I just wanted to point out that we are, you know, we're all on this page together and like Hannah, Joanna, Georgia, and I have had this conversation before where we just know that we are so lucky to be able to have these conversations and buy these products. But I would hate for anyone in our community to think that it is an essential to have this. It's not, it's such a luxury. But yeah, that's just my little side rant because what's a she's on the money podcast without a victoria rant classic okay so i don't know half of the words in this question so wish me luck um are products the way to go or in order
Starting point is 00:32:02 to best take care of our skin should we be getting certain facials done at intervals as well i'm wondering if the fuss behind led light therapy microcurrent facials and microdermabrasion are legit and something we should be looking into if taking out if taking care of our skin on a budget is a priority for us great job reading that question out that was quite a challenge that one um my answer to this one is that if you have a serious concern that you're trying to treat and nothing topically is treating that for example if you have like um pitted scarring from acne for example you've got quite serious pigmentation or you suffer from rosacea like myself sometimes topical ingredients just can't effectively treat those concerns so it would
Starting point is 00:32:48 be worth going and spending your money on treatments as opposed to buying all these topical products hoping they're going to do something when in reality they may not achieve the result that you're looking for but I don't think that it's necessary if you're keeping up and maintaining a great routine and a consistent routine and you're using your skincare daily or using your SPF daily, you can really maintain quite healthy skin. But it is nice to have a treatment every once in a while. Everyone loves getting a facial occasionally, I'm sure. I'm sure it's not just us, but it really isn't something that's absolutely necessary in a skincare routine. And a lot of dermal clinicians and dermatologists will also say that a professional treatment is
Starting point is 00:33:29 nothing without the home care. Yeah. I would also say that there's also a ritual aspect of all of this because I think something that I've learned in lockdown is that I don't need a manicure and pedicure but I really effing want one and I really miss it and so it's not like and a massage like I don't need a massage I've got nothing physically wrong with my back but I want one so badly and I've had you know chemical peels and and facials and it's for me it's like the experience and like that the experience part of it and I really believe in spending money on experiences that's why I travel so much so I don't know whether that's against the advice of this podcast but that's just me I spend no no no it aligns to the value everybody on this podcast will know that
Starting point is 00:34:19 I'll say if it aligns to your goals and values like heck yes get it done yeah so my one of my values is definitely that yeah I love to spend my money on experiences so whether that's you know going to get a massage or going on a trip whatever it is like i think there's like a ritual aspect to going to get a facial so i mean it's a yeah it's a yes from me but you're right it's everyone's got goals and different values so and you can learn a lot about your skin by just going and having a facial with a dermal clinician um like you often they have these observed scanners or visia scanners and hannah and i have both had these skin scans done it tells you a lot about your skin that you maybe didn't know because you can't see that stuff on the surface. So it does help inform
Starting point is 00:35:02 your decisions on products that you might buy that are going to be effective on your skin instead of wasting money on stuff that you don't need. Georgia, do we have any other questions or do you think that Jo and Hannah are going to leave us? We have one more and I'm actually pretty keen to know the answer as well. So don't leave us yet, ladies. What is your suggestion for fine lines and wrinkles to people who don't want Botox? Is there a mystical, magical serum or cream out there to rescue us I think I should answer this Jo yeah as someone that gets Botox I'm gonna say that there is no mystical magical serum or cream and what I would say about Botox is that oh I don't I just want to be honest and I and that actually does work in a way that is magical does that make I
Starting point is 00:35:48 don't know how to say that like because because what Botox does is it actually um relaxes the muscles so the lines will like magically disappear what I always say to people that message me on Instagram and they're like oh my god what are you using you've got like no wrinkles on your forehead and I'm like well I get Botox so I wouldn't want someone to look at me and think that that's a serum doing it what serums can do is really help up what I've noticed and and we always go back to JLo is JLo yes she might get whatever she gets we don't know but she has beautiful skin texture and like I think that that beautiful skin texture and the health of your skin mine in particular has been improved by the use of high quality skincare so I thought Botox
Starting point is 00:36:34 actually just like stopped you moving but you're saying it actually changes your skin texture as well like no no no Botox doesn't change the texture of your skin Jo do you sort of know the technical it relaxes the muscle yeah so anything any anti-wrinkle product will it's designed to relax the area so any um dynamic lines or static lines that are there when you're resting it helps to soften the appearance of them by relaxing the muscle but hannah's saying in terms of texture that's where your skincare comes in and when you're seeing someone like jlo who's in her 50s and she's got this amazing beautiful skin texture that's that can't be from botox or fillers which everyone loves to throw around.
Starting point is 00:37:17 Like, oh, JLo must get Botox and fillers. So what? If she wants to get Botox or fillers, she looks amazing. Who cares? Yeah, I never understand why that's something people say. I know. It's like, oh, cool. Like, is she happy?
Starting point is 00:37:30 Fantastic. Does she look amazing? Yes. Yeah, great. Do I want to look like JLo at 50? Yes. And if you keep listening to these She's On The Money and Adore Beauty IQ podcasts, you're going to, one,
Starting point is 00:37:41 look like JLo, but two, be as rich as her. It's going to be fantastic. What I would say the big magic though, just really quickly, just finish off with the biggest, biggest magic, stay out of the sun and use SPF 50. I was going to say exactly the same thing. I was going to say my answer to that question was going to be SPF. Oh my gosh. So is that our number one takeaway?
Starting point is 00:38:02 Yeah. Yeah. Honestly, there is nothing. So our number one takeaway. There's nothing else we can recommend more. Yeah. Sun is the biggest cause of damage, I believe, for your skin. And is that like a money win?
Starting point is 00:38:12 because we won't have to spend heaps and heaps on skincare and repairing treatments when we're older if we just wear sun cream now. If you just stay out of the sun and wear your SPF in your 20s, yes. Exactly. I guess that's it. That's all we have time for today, guys. So, Hannah, it's over to you. You're right, Georgia.
