Hello and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast for millennials who want financial
freedom. Today is, of course, Friday. Happy Friday to everyone listening. My name is Georgia
King. I'm a copywriter and journalism student. And joining me today, it's just Jess Riggie.
Hey! It's the dream team. How are you, doll? Oh, I'm good. How are you? Good. It feels a little weird. It does. It's different. It's different, but I'm excited. I feel like maybe not you probably, but I'm not the person that people come here for. So this is a lot of pressure. I don't think anyone comes here for me either, doll. Let's be real. Do you want to explain where Ryan and Victoria are today?
They both got sick the same week. What are the chances?
Mysterious.
You better believe that I'm debt-holing everything within a five-metre radius of me in the office at the moment.
COVID negative, of course, we love, but both of them have no voice.
So today you're getting our dulcet tones.
Exactly right. So you're very welcome, everyone.
I was also away last week, which everyone's probably forgotten.
I'm the last man standing, aren't I?
Yeah, so Jess may not be with us next week, but who knows?
We'll see how we go.
So how does this podcast usually start?
Because it's usually Victoria and then we go around the table.
Money, wins and confessions.
Talk to me.
Across the table.
Can you guys tell that we don't know what we're doing?
We're flying by the seat of our seats.
We're making it up as we go.
We're going rogue and that is fine.
We're going to start with money, wins and confessions.
Do you want to kick us off?
But it's fine.
Yeah, it's fine.
My one this week is something that I've seen in the group before.
It's a little life hack.
petrol went up to $1.70 from $1.20.
Gee whiz.
That's too many dollars.
Rough on the bank account.
Absolutely.
Very rough on the bank account.
So as soon as I saw that it went up, I jumped on the 7-Eleven app
and you can lock the fuel price.
People have always been big fans of that in the Facebook group.
It's so good.
Once upon a time you used to have to upload or like put money onto it
and it would lock it and then you would use that money to pay
and I wasn't into that.
But now you can just lock the fuel price.
So locked it in $1.20.
A week later when I went to fill up, everyone else is paying $1.70
and I'm paying $1.20.
That is genius.
Huge.
How does that actually work though?
Do you go to the cashier and you're like, hello, sir.
Yeah, you just show them.
I think there's a barcode and they scan it and it just locks the price.
Yeah.
But it scans everywhere.
And top tip, if you're like us and you maybe work in the city
and live, you know, a little further out, check in both places
because sometimes it's cheaper like further out or in the city
because it does it like based on a geo location.
Gotcha.
Yeah.
Big money win.
Money win from you as well, thank you.
Money win from me.
Look, it's kind of a money win and you're going to laugh at me
because as Jess knows, as everyone listening probably knows,
the internet and George, not the best of friends.
So TikTok pasta.
You would be on TikTok pasta.
So I'm about eight weeks late but it's this gorgeous feta dish
and basically you will all know what I'm talking about but I made it
And it was cost-effective and delicious.
So are we calling that a money win?
I'm calling that a money win.
Is it cheaper than like a normal pasta dish?
Well, I mean, it depends.
If you're making like lobster pasta.
Cheaper than going to a restaurant.
It looks really good too.
I feel like if you pull that out at a dinner,
especially with older people who maybe haven't seen it on TikTok before,
that's a crowd pleaser.
Yeah.
I would have been impressed because.
Because we're easily impressed apparently, the two of us.
So it's been a big week here at She's On The Money HQ, G King.
We on Monday had a money diary from a student saver who saved 60 grand, which as someone
who's been a student, you are still technically currently a student.
Yeah, yeah, I am.
You're getting close to the end, but like povo student feels like that's pretty impressive.
Wednesday's episode, we had Rebecca Pritchard come on.
We did.
Who is an angel in her own right, but also is a mother and currently expecting bub number
too. And she was perfectly placed to talk all things baby with us. We've had so many requests
about pregnancy, the cost of having a baby, mat leave, all those good things. So part one of that
two part, I guess you could call it a mini series, went up on Wednesday all about the costs of having
a baby. And the much awaited mat leave episode is coming soon. We get regular DMs about it.
We heard you, we're listening, it's coming. Get excited. That was such a fun episode to record.
It was so nice having a guest in the studio because usually it is just V and I, but Beck,
yeah, she was just a little ray of sunshine in the studio and so articulate and she just
had so many hot tips for saving.
So if you are planning.
Yeah, she did that really interesting, what do you call it, an experiment or like a recording
of every dollar, right?
Yeah, yeah.
So she recorded literally every cent she spent throughout her pregnancy and the first three
months i think of having the bubba um and she ended up spending about 17 grand not cheap not
cheap but also a couple hundred yeah there's like no statistics on that really like you google it
and the estimations like they give you a range on like how much it costs and they it's a pretty big
difference i think the stat we threw out was between 3 000 and 17 000 so that is a huge that's
not helpful at all not helpful not helpful uh but our chat with beck definitely was helpful so if
you are planning a family or you're just interested, as I am, in how much that actually costs, then that
is a really good episode to have a listen to. Moving on here, Jessica, should we talk about
money wins and confessions from the community that stood out to us this week? Oh, absolutely.
There's no Ryan John here to play us the funky background music. We didn't really plan for this.
We didn't. Do you want to kick us off, J. King, with your first money win? Sure. Okay, what have
i got here i've taken down a few okay this one was my favorite this is from sarah who has a money
loss but it kind of turns into a money win so she broke her wrist roller skating on friday
so sad for you sarah hope you're okay um but that cost her 430 in unexpected medical expenses and
she also lost her weekend of wages obviously obviously she worked casually and couldn't go
into work yeah so that sucks but the money win of that is that she's saving money on petrol for the
next six weeks uh because she can't drive so yeah it's kind of silver lining money win yeah you gotta
be positive in those times oh sarah i hope you get back on the skate soon bloody oh legend um
my first win is from hannah and she said not so much a win as a temptation win but i'm gonna count
this as a money win because i recently did this for victoria um she said she unsubscribed from a
whole bunch of promotional emails to stop her inbox from getting so cluttered but the side
benefit is that she's not going to be bombarded by emails making her want to purchase things which
such a smart pro tip i've done this for myself like i said i did it for v recently because her
inbox you guys a nightmare um and like just removing that temptation those sale things like
the targeted marketing that you get these days there's a really good docker on netflix called
the social dilemma which talks a lot about the psychology of marketing and how companies are
kind of, I don't want to use the word exploiting, but like utilizing that to get us to buy and get
us to spend. So unsubscribing is a really great way to remove temptation. Oh, 100%. It is like
anytime I'm in my emails, there's always that promotions tab and it's all of these spreads and
I always click on them and I'm like, gee, what are you doing? And then you want things that five
minutes ago you didn't want. Correct. Because they're not in your face when you don't subscribe
to them 100 so recommend that great tip there from hannah next one from you g king okay so this one
is from jazz who has some amazing friends get this jess so she went out for breakfast with some
girlfriends she ordered something little to keep the cost down she was trying to be frugal
uh the cafe didn't split bills so her friend paid for hers and she wouldn't let her pay her
back oh that's so nice that's the first one and then the second part of this is that she caught
up with another friend on sunday at a distillery gorgeous love a bit of gin uh she happened to
know the bartender and got a free cocktail and then her friend paid for their tasting flights
that's like a flight of all of the variations of gin wow um and then she was invited back to
her parents place for dinner so free meals and drinks galore i love that for her i know i feel
like it's a really nice thing too like sometimes you're not in the position to afford to catch up
with friends and sometimes you might be in the position where you are a little bit more free
with your money you're in a slightly better financial place and i think it's really nice
sometimes to just be like hey like i've got it if you're in the position to do so like it's just
like a little pay it forward 100 it yeah it leaves you with such a nice feeling um and you're exactly
right jazz was stressing out about those social events because she was strapped for cash so yeah
really nice from the girls beautiful over to you my friend all right my next one is from
Marnie who has two big moving money wins moving is expensive I did it not that long ago and it
is not cheap what are we talking um so moving house specifically and she instead of hiring a
truck borrowed a ute so she said it added three or four hours to the move because she had to do
multiple trips instead of just the one load you do in a big truck but it saved her a couple hundred
bucks good girl and the stress I feel like as well driving a truck can be stressful have you
gotten behind the big wheels I attempted it once and I used to drive a Nissan Micra so
the jump from a Micra to a truck is kind of significant wow but then the second part of
that is that instead of paying $300 for an end of lease clean they did it all themselves and
they did it better than they feel like the cleaners would have and that saved them another
300 well done so huge big money wins there from Marnie um just to make it about Georgia once again
we my old housemates and I spent two days cleaning our house yeah scrubbing getting down on those
knees and scrubbing um as I said we thought we'd nailed it yeah and then we get a call from our
grumpy agent saying guys you have not cleaned this appropriately um just yelling your ears
but we had to pay 450 to clean the whole place it's so expensive so here's a fun fact for you
guys did you know at least in victoria the rental laws state that you're only required to leave it
in a reasonable cleanly condition like they can't actually penalize you from having like
a few streaks on the shower or whatever like the law states that it just has has to be in like
reasonable condition and cleanliness oh my god ours definitely was reasonable real estate and
like rental property managers will sometimes like obviously they want to do the best they can for
their you know investment owners um leave your rental property clean don't be rude clean up
after yourself but it doesn't have to be you speak in span and you don't have to spend all
of those hundreds of dollars legally speaking anyway i've got a few here so i'll choose just
one last one uh so this one is from jane who was inspired by victoria's call on the podcast to get
cheaper phone plan remember that a few weeks ago oh my gosh not even for a dollar not even for a
dollar that was the best he was great and the little nursery rhymes in the background playing
on the tv it was yeah it was gorgeous anyway jane called up optus she got them to give her
the 39 10 gigabyte plan for 19 with an extra 5 gigabyte all she said was she wanted a cheaper
plan as she could see better deals elsewhere and that's what they gave to her amazing if you
haven't there's a script on the website check it out get yourself a better deal i know we plug it
a lot but the amount of money you can save on just like your recurring general bills read in the
facebook group people are saving hundreds yeah yeah exactly right just finish us off with our
final money win of the week all right my last win is a goodie from natalie she says they scored a
baby tag along which is one of those cute little um like a tricycle but enclosed that you put a
baby in on the back of the bike so it's like a trailer oh yeah yeah put the baby in the trailer
put the trailer on your bike and you pedal around and they get to sit in the back amazing much more
safe than a trailer obviously specifically designed to hold children um but she got a tag along for
free because they noticed their neighbors had it sitting in their yard and they stole it
look i mean potential money mean perhaps a legal loss no but they asked if they could
purchase it and then the neighbor gave it to them for free stop that i feel like that's
such a nice thing to do again the pay it forward yeah mentality yep very into that and there's a
really cute pic of um yeah let me turn it around so you can understand my poor description look
how cute that is yeah those things there's like three kids in there as well that's a decent
riding in the passenger side of their best friend's ride amazing stuff
all right well now normally we'd have a bit more back and forth and discussion because
there'd be double the people there'd be double the people so i thought let's just chat some
fun stuff from the group okay one of my favorite parts of my job is the fact that i'm in the group
every day like reading things and commenting on things and we just have so many fantastic
discussion so like not at all subtle plug if you're listening to the pod and not in the facebook
group get amongst it there's a lot going on um i wanted to kick it off with something that popped
off we had a thread posted just kind of asking a few general questions about the gender pay gap
yep um and a lot of people expectedly talking about what they had experienced the fact that
they feel like it's real i just want to ask george like what do you feel like there is a gender pay
gap what is your personal experience in this area I know it's a big it's a big one to tackle but I
feel like it's it's worth talking about oh definitely definitely see it's it's hard to
know because you and I just we're still quite young um so it's hard to know because we oh it's
hard to say this because we're talking about she's on the money like we're in a privileged position
where we work for a business that really values its employees there are very open discussions
around money yeah like it's all very transparent but most people aren't that fortunate yes um which
makes it tricky i feel like no 100 so obviously you and digest have it pretty good at cheese on
the money so this isn't something that i've been directly affected by um yeah we're very lucky that
our boss is a financial advisor and we're having these discussions every single day absolutely and
we're seeing them in the community and we can engage with them but at the same time it is still
such a huge issue and it's something that kind of needs to be addressed but I don't really know
what the answer is like it's a tough one isn't it yeah it was an interesting along the same lines
there was an interesting post on some proposed laws that would mandate pay transparency and
things like that so at the moment it's legal for there to be a clause in your contract that says
you cannot discuss your salary with another employee which I think is an absolute joke
because that's how businesses leverage you know secrecy if you don't know what if I don't know
what you're earning and you don't know what I'm earning then how can you ever find out the
difference exactly right and that's where I guess that gender pay gap comes in if there are males
that are earning more maybe you're not aware of it or you're not confident enough to discuss it
have you ever had this in a past workplace yes and no so I don't want to get too specific here
um but in a role that I worked previously I was doing something very comparable to a male
counterpart um and it was in an industry that is definitely I would say male dominated we were
really good friends and I knew that he was earning more than me um and there were a few nuances to it
like it wasn't super clear cut but I just remember thinking that like I didn't know how to address it
I didn't really know how to bring up that feeling of oh like I think I'm working just as hard as you
and I'm doing just as much as you but you're earning you know fifteen thousand dollars more
than me I it's just it can be very overwhelming I think and I feel like what we were seeing on
this thread in the group is a lot of people talking about times that they had been given
really poor reasons for why they were perhaps earning less like women are less confident or
women are doing less in the workplace or they have less ambition and that's why your male
counterpart is earning more um and to be honest I never got to that point because I never felt
comfortable to have that conversation and that's on me 100% but um yeah it's a really tough one
and I think like having those conversations like what happened in the group opening up people's
eyes and just being more open in general which is what we talk about so much on the pod
um is a really good step forward to kind of challenging those ideals have you ever spoken
with your mates at she's on the money or in previous workplaces about your pay because that
is a really difficult thing to bring up as well how do you yeah not so much at other workplaces
um at she's on the money like i'm pretty across it and like we're all very open and that's like
a huge change for me but even strangely in my close friendship group like it's never really
been a conversation that's been had which I was speaking to a friend recently and it came up kind
of organically and I was very happy and open to share my salary because like I said like we have
such an open environment here that it's kind of just second nature now yeah and I like I did it
and then there was this brief second where I was like oh my god like what did I just do and then
obviously everything was fine like we just continued on the conversation but yeah I don't
know how are you are your are your friends the same uh yeah similarly it's not something that
we really discuss like I think for a few of them money is still something that makes them quite
anxious yeah and it's just not an area they feel comfortable wandering into yeah which of course
if you're not comfortable we're not saying you need to be screaming things absolutely no you do
you make sure that you're comfortable but if you are able to facilitate those conversations or if
maybe shiz on the money is a good you know a nice opening or a nice segue for you to kind of start
having those discussions I think it's really powerful because knowledge is power 100 percent
did any other posts kind of stand out to you this week I know that there was one about sugar daddies
that kind of popped up about face but yeah that one was so popular random super random we actually
it was interesting because i do a lot of the moderation as i'm sure a lot of people know
in the group and that particular post was reported several times lots of times um and we kept it up
because in case you weren't aware like we are very sex work can i say sex or is it gonna get
like does that make us sex is fine yeah we are very sex work positive here at this podcast um
we believe all work is relevant work we are supportive of you as long as you are safe and
you are happy that is all that we care about and so it was just a really kind of fun conversation
really it was a few people jumped in with their opinions on what they thought was and wasn't
right at the end of the day i personally think it's a personal decision that only you can make
for yourself um but it's also kind of crazy to hear how much money people have spent on what
like one guy dropped a couple of grand for pictures of someone's feet and like no judgment
no judgment if someone said to me i'll send you three grad for a photo of your foot i'd be like
have 10 photos yeah yeah are you kidding me you can have both feet you know double the price that
is crazy yeah it's wild look to each their own no judgment from me um but it was a really
interesting thread to kind of read and see what some people's experiences were so just search
sugar daddy in the group friends and it will come up and you can have a little troll of what everyone
had to say my favorite comment on that thread jess was from anne who wrote i am a 72 year old
woman and this has been the most interesting thread i followed all year oh my god queen
yes girl love that she's in the community oh welcome welcome to anne
