She's on the money.
She's on the money.
Hello and welcome to She's on the money, the podcast for millennials who want financial
freedom.
Welcome back to another one of our Friday Drinks episodes, where our team get together
every single week and have a drink and talk about the successes of our community.
This week, we had a very exciting week.
It was the start of Accountability August, and we're going to dive into chatting about
that because I know Jess is super excited.
Pumped.
I know you are.
You literally haven't stopped talking about it.
But Tony, before we do that, what happened in our money diary this week?
Our money diary this week was someone who is still living at home, and she acknowledged
that she was very lucky to do that and planned to backpack around Europe over the last two years
but hashtag COVID so she's got all this money saved and she was like you know what I really
want to work for an agency a creative agency so she started one herself um as you do like as you
do you just oh I want to work in that field I'm gonna just do it just create it problem solving
yeah create our own opportunities and our money diarist has started that with a few friends which
was really really cool and it was nice hearing somebody you know killing it yeah yeah I love
that she was like oh no we just decided it was a good idea so we went for it yeah like it's creative
like it's one of those things where I think people always assume that to start your own business you
need a million years of experience and then you dive out and do it but sometimes especially in
those creative fields you can just say well actually I'm a really creative person or I'm
really funny or i'm really talented and you just start from the bottom there and i think that
there's a lot of merit to that as well yeah she's doing well and don't you worry ryan i uh steered
her right on over to the business bible she said she's listening to all the episodes very exciting
yeah we tried to introduce it to her but she was like oh i can already do it for you and we're like
oh okay can we help at all nah okay thanks for your time she's like i'm gonna be able to give
You guys are some pointers, though.
Send them through.
Send them through.
All right.
And Jess, what happened in our deep dive this week?
So, on Wednesday, you and G spoke all about debt consolidation.
Which I had a lot of fun with.
Yeah.
And for those who don't know, debt consolidation is essentially when you have a whole bunch
of debts at different places or to different businesses or on different cards.
You bundle them all on up into one more manageable debt repayment.
You should clearly listen to the episode.
You know I did.
However, there are a whole bunch of different considerations that you need to think about
when you're doing that because you may have to declare bankruptcy or there are a whole
bunch of different things.
And so, you spoke about that, the how, the why.
I mean, I'd say that you may have to declare bankruptcy as maybe the most dramatic of those
things that you might have to consider when consolidating your-
I was going to say, you said that really casually.
I was like, okay, well, that's your main takeaway.
But maybe a little lighter, but in the next few weeks, we're going to have an entire episode
on bankruptcy coming up.
I think it'll be more of an education piece than a how-to piece.
And that'll be, I believe, in two weeks.
So stick around for that one if you're interested.
I think it'll be really interesting to learn about.
Yeah, absolutely.
Getting off bankruptcy, though, because it's not this week's topic, Jessica.
Let's talk to Ryan, who seems to be really impressed with the drink that we've got.
Well, we've got Brookvale Union Vodka and Peach Iced Tea.
How do we rate it?
So stoked with this one.
Everyone seems pretty chuffed with it.
I like Brookvale Union, the brand, because they make a ginger beer that I like.
So when I saw Brookvale Union come out, they do a bunch of funky stuff.
I know Tony's over there nodding, saying bad words that won't make the on-air edition of
this podcast, but are you happy with it, Tony?
I really like it.
I'm a big fan of iced tea and a full stop, so yeah.
I can definitely see this one over a tall glass of ice in the middle of summer being
an absolute winner, for sure.
As we're here in the first week of August and it's freezing cold.
I'm planning for the future, guys.
It's the future me.
We're looking ahead.
We're feeling good.
Speaking of feeling good, can you run us through the money wins of the week?
All right, Yelena, 11 months ago, she hit her savings goal of $10,000.
And she said, I want to buy a house, so I'm setting some new goals.
11 months on, from $10,000, she now has $35,000.
That is really impressive.
Well done, Yelena.
She's saving for a house.
Hayley just reached-
Now, I think this might be a She's On The Money record.
Hayley, I've just reached my goal of an emergency fund of $10,000.
Heck yes.
Why is it a She's On The Money?
I don't think I've heard, I just, most emergency funds, not that there's rules, but like they're
always like two grand, five.
I don't think I've heard a 10 grand emergency fund before.
I haven't heard one in a while, but I feel like that's a pretty solid number for a lot
of people.
I'd feel very secure.
I hear that a lot in my budget and cashflow masterclasses, kind of like people feel really
secure because it's like the first number that's five figures.
They're like, no, if I've got five figures in the bank, I'm fine.
And it definitely is a really confidence boosting piece.
but maybe unrelatable for some but like a massive goal for her and just to know she's got that
financial freedom like i'm envious she said though 10 000 is all i want for my emergency fund so all
my savings from now on are going straight into investments that's awesome that's awesome well
done felicity and can i just say a silver lining felicity just the great mindset here uh because
not so fun in sydney at the moment with lockdown but felicity says not working as much because of
lockdown in sydney but i'm saving a fortune on child care fees because usually i'll be going to
work and then be paying all these fees so expensive too oh unbelievable like some people i mean there's
we could do an episode on that people go to work and end up earning 10 bucks for the day by the
time they've paid for the fees just break even yeah i have colorful opinions on that that sometimes
it's worth still doing even though you're taking home ten dollars like i think we've covered it in
a podcast before because i remember this rant but i definitely believe in still going to work even
if you do come out with only $10 in profit each week, because, you know, obviously childcare is
expensive, but the benefit of staying in the job market and keeping your skills relevant and keeping
your mental health in check. For your confidence. Yeah. I think it's really important. And just
having adult conversations. Yeah. There's actually another win related to that coming up, but
Felicity said double win. I obviously get to spend more time with my little ones because we're all
home together during the day. She's like, oh, by the way, also spending time with my kids.
oh by the way i felt the same way in lockdown with my cat oh my gosh i was gonna say the same
thing about my dog but i was like oh people won't like me comparing it to a child but they're our
children aren't they jess literally now danica another silver lining story from what could have
been not such a great tale she's just broken up with her partner and the partners moved out sorry
about that danica they were probably really sucky anyway i agree um she's better off she's won that
one now she said on the plus side though they contributed the fridge to our relationship and
i kept it oh that's good i like that the ultimate power move she said i didn't really need it so i
sold it on the weekend on facebook marketplace for 160 dollars thank you woman after jess's heart
all right mandy said she found some real louis batons in an op shop in a small tiny farm town
in outback western australia wow between v and jess who was our shoes correspondent
how much are we looking at for a pair of louboutins victoria divine oh between 800 and
1200 i would say on average want to have a guess about the op shop in this small tiny farming town
12 i'm gonna say oh do they know the value of it um hold on hold on 25 inkling do they think they
like have they priced it in line with the value or did they just think they're another pair of
op shop shoes as much as i'm proud of the research i do i didn't actually call the op shop just to
get a vibe of what the owner said.
No, no, no.
Not what they said.
You're going to know from the pricing that they knew what that item was or they didn't.
Well, the person who bought it knew it was worth a lot more because she was bragging
about it hard in the She's On The Money Facebook group and put some photos in and stuff as
well.
I'm going to say $30.
The winner.
If my math is right, and I can't remember what Jess said, she paid $20.
Jess is the winner.
Well done.
$20.
$20 as good as new for brand new Louis Vuittons.
That's crazy.
Emily Jane.
My parents bought me a large pumpkin from their garden.
How good is that when the parents turn up?
I cut it, boiled it, added garlic, cumin, salt, and some lemon,
and now I have one kilo of really yummy spiced pumpkin dip.
It cost me $0.30.
Oh, my God.
That's so good.
Pumpkin is delicious.
Also, being sent produce is literally the best thing.
Like, when people send you home with, like, lemons,
or I recently raided one of my girlfriend's gardens.
She has this massive rosemary bush, and I was just like,
I'm going to do a little bit of clipping before I leave.
Thank you.
Well played.
$0.30 in total.
jamie i needed to restock my expensive foundation which was going to be about 60 bucks plus 12
shipping from sephora the worst yeah sounds awful um i mean like expensive awful sounds awful
i mean if you're not getting your moisturizer from kohl's and paying a couple of dollars you're
doing it wrong foundation's not moisturizer yeah but i said different but ryan how much would you
spend on skincare well i used to have that subscription with lumen remember yeah that's
right that was i was building up to the wedding trying to like freshen up a little bit oh cute
And then I tried to cancel the subscription
as I've vented many times about this exact story
and they made me click a button that said,
yes, I do hate my skin
and I don't want the subscription anymore.
Triggering.
Oh, bullying.
I think that was $35 a month for three different things.
It was like a charcoal paste and a moisturizer
and something else.
Guys, beauty product compared to female,
the price for the exact same product.
Pink tax.
We hate it.
All right.
So she found out that Sephora was having 20% off
plus free shipping,
which brought it down to $48.
But then Shopback had an upsized cashback of 25% with a balance of $36.
Then it got even better because Shopback are giving bonus mystery cashback
if you download the browser extension.
I don't even know what that means.
So after all that, from $72 originally, just $28 for Jamie for the month of July.
Jamie.
You're welcome.
Our friends at Shopback will love hearing that story, I think.
If you don't get the emails, not to be like, sign up for the emails,
but i love them because they do those super cashbacks and i love the iconic and i always
get stuff when it's like 20 cashback and when you're buying a hundred dollar dress like that's
a lot of money yeah this is why she didn't do the accountability august oh yeah i'm hearing you
our office deliveries will also attest to that now these could be some awkward conversations
to have but i feel like there's some great results out of new zealand here kaylee has
sat down with her husband to discuss their finances because congratulations kaylee she's
about to have a baby how exciting right um so the husband is going to contribute to her kiwi saver
which is the same as superannuation get it girl while she's not working so she's like you know
you're not working i'm gonna top you up so he's gonna pay that and there's also some um tax
advantages if he's putting more in all that kind of thing um so she's not disadvantaged uh she also
has one placement left to complete her uni degree i don't know if it's nursing but i just always
assume nursing when i hear nursing or teaching yeah something like that placement so she said
when i'm back on my feet after the baby we're not putting time pressure but eventually i just
need to knock this last little thing off and then i'm qualified so her husband went into his
workplace and he has negotiated a combination of paternity leave annual leave and leave without pay
so he's going to stay home with the baby so she can go and do her prac so she doesn't have to
fall behind with her career and her retirement savings they've got it all lined up what a king
yeah so not even just a money win a life win that sounds like a really great partnership a win for
equality and like you're saying before of course it's in new zealand though they also have jacinda
ardern rude pavlova they've got all the good things i know is this a shizzy's ad
but as you're saying before the uh so many people put their careers on hold for so long and they get
nerves about going back the fact that she's going to keep chipping away and the fact they haven't
even had the baby yet and they're having the chat beforehand i guess a lot of people would
the baby's three months old they're like oh we probably should have thought about this and not
and like so great work for being ahead but this is my favorite money win of the week
that wasn't your favorite no okay share share go oh it better not be another big pumpkin
it might include pumpkin beck said it was my birthday this week and i got a free pizza from
crossed well done all right jess we are back and i'm gonna throw to you in a hot second about
accountability august but for those of you who haven't heard about it yet we are running an
accountability challenge in our community this month to keep us accountable for the goals that
we're setting for ourselves so the team have all set different goals for themselves because
obviously if you don't drink coffee it seems silly to say oh this month i'm not gonna drink
take away coffee no challenge genius because you passed so jess has already won that because she
doesn't drink coffee but it's been going really well and jess you're really excited about it so
why don't you tell everybody this week's update so it has been so much fun we have a really fun
template on our stories that people have been filling out to set their goals for themselves and
it's real cute it's really fun and it's so cool on our first check-in that we posted on facebook
we had a bunch of people being like oh my gosh i'm team tony i'm doing the same challenge as you
I'm team Ryan so it's so fun to be doing this with you guys and literally like helping each
other out and sharing tips my goal this month was that I wanted to side hustle up an extra
$500 which was very ambitious um by selling you're going to do well though I hope so by selling
things that I already have in the house clothes and just other bits and pieces that have accumulated
and I'm a tenth of the way there I've made $45 so it's only the start of August very true
Which is very exciting, and it's not even the weekend yet,
and I'm assuming that's when most of your sales happen
because that's when you get to post your stuff.
Yeah, exactly right.
But that is, of course, just me,
and everybody's been checking in with us on Facebook.
Ryan, have you been having a squiz at those?
So this is an –
We know he has.
I've had a big squiz,
and there's some great ideas in there as well, by the way.
Amy said, I'm not going to drive to work.
I'm going to walk to work.
Oh, that's so good.
She said, I don't live that far away.
parking's a bit expensive and then obviously petrol and all that kind of things and she also
said as much as it's a money challenge for her at the sustainability of it not putting any more
in it so she's going to walk every time she's got a shift for the whole month of august wow
that's huge good luck for her fitness too you'll feel great after this month and her mental health
i love how i feel after i go for a walk well i've started walking to work because i don't have a car
um but it's a bit different it actually does you get to work and you're a bit a bit more
refreshed and you've got some fresh air and you don't just like your blood's pumping already yeah
i'm liking it so good luck amy with that i won't be doing that though so good luck
now casey said she's gonna go meat free for a month oh i love that that's a that's a good
challenge because meat i mean as well as the v's up to a 30th year but no not even it's like 30th
month maybe i haven't always been meat for really no no no i just haven't loved it and then i cut it
out completely she's gone full meal prep and has already made four yummy meals with lentils and
done a vegetarian lasagna and stuff like that so as much as the health benefits like money's expensive
right yeah for sure and dal is so yummy obviously biased but dal is so yummy and so cheap to make
because you can buy dried lentils for next to nothing and then make a really yummy dal that
you can take to work and you can have for dinner and it's just it stretches so far i'm always so
impressed when i make one and then i keep telling myself i'll make it again and then it's like three
months before i make things um and jess lots of people we're gonna follow you in and say i'm also
gonna try and flip some stuff online a rose said that she is trying to fill up her emergency fund
with stuff from around the house i went on to her so smart and finally kate said she said it's tough
for me guys no after pay for august yes and hopefully that continues into the rest of your
life we have strong thoughts on this as everybody knows so i am in full support well after pay was
purchased by the guy that owns twitter for 39 billion during the week um after he hears the
news about kate quitting yeah reconsider yeah no kate kate you need to actually hold off on
quitting because that was actually a very part of the deal but like everybody's celebrating how
impressive that is and all i see is men getting rich off uh financial disadvantage of women but
whatever nobody's calling that out lots of people in a group have made a full stack as well my
favorite story from last year was the girl who said all the money i've wasted on after pay i
earned back by investing in after pay and i used the profits i remember that it was so good i love
that that is big brain she gamed the system well done how are you going ryan with no uber eats all
right so here i have a question for the team oh here we go he's gonna try and palm it off by not
answering the question directly you make a good politician i have not used uber eats however
downloaded door dash yeah my question is where's the legality besides getting the same food via
a different someone commented on the thread and was like ryan i hope that you know that door dash
and deliveroo and everything else also counts okay well i haven't used any of those but i went
directly to my favorite pizza place you ordered takeaway that's still not on but i got it from
the place i what if i drink have a drink at the venue while i'm picking it up that's our favorite
thing to do about them i don't care if it's your favorite thing to do you committed no uber
the distinction here is did you go to pick up the food i did well then i would say that i think
jessica i mean you still had but i had it there sometimes i mean if you've gone out for dinner
which is what you said yeah because you guys go and have a wine right and you have a wine and then
you pick up your pizza i'm assuming that's the story yeah creature of habit but i think it's a
different story than ordering uber eats because uber eats is a convenience thing there was no
convenience it was not convenient i was forced to go to a bar and have a drink and it was very
tough for ryan guys hashtag pray for ryan i mean how can he get through the day pizza funding will
be in the show notes it's also better for the business because the money i'm pretty sure uber
eats takes a pretty big cut from the business it's very hefty so if you're going direct to them i
also feel like you're supporting your local just a man of the people supporting small business
we will never be as good as you right someone finally
tony lodge how are you going with your challenge um so i decided that for the month of august i
wouldn't do any discretionary spending so basically no spending except for obviously
rent and all of those things and um i've quickly realized how long a month is
it's now the 6th of august um so i i've got a bit of a query about it so i booked in dinner
with a friend for tonight actually and i thought like weeks ago you booked it in before yeah and
then i'm like oh does that count because it's technically you know i think it i think it
doesn't count because it was pre-planned but also is that bad or am i just giving you a get
out of jail free card because i know that i'm about to tell you i booked uber eats for two
weeks in advance it's fine no i wonder because it's mindful like i'm not you know sitting on
my phone and ordering clothes or whatever i'm you know actually going out not ordering a reach
which is what normally my boyfriend and i would do but we're going out we're doing something and
it's a bit you know this is a bit of rule bending here sorry but and that's fine but what i would
like to say is that anybody that is in this no discretionary spending boat it's okay if you make
a mistake i'm gonna ask you next week how how big that financial mistake okay well don't ask me then
because i've also got a hair appointment well in that case maybe we segue on to me and i'm in the
same boat so i'm glad that you said that mistakes are acceptable because on monday which was my
first day in the office that was august and taking my lunch to work which is the goal i set for
myself um i forgot my lunch and had to buy it so you didn't last a single day no but like the
intention was there and i had all of ryan out that going to the pizza place wasn't okay
so at least i'm not trying to twist it into something else tony lodge and being like oh
like i don't know if it actually fits can i just can i just say i feel like also i tried to lie
about it and i got caught yeah i literally found her bag in the office like oh did you get lunch
this week and she was like no and then she's like did you have sushi and i was like maybe well she
called me that night on monday night and i said oh did you bring lunch to work today and she said
yes and i said did you go to sushi hub and she went
you've got a new handbag yeah it's this new brand called sombrero
that's literally me but i did have some uh veggie sushi and it was very good i'll have you know
According to Charlotte, who's on our team, it's actually the best sushi in Melbourne.
It's a massive call for takeaway sushi.
I do just want to say anybody who is doing Accountability August, as you've probably
picked up, we're human beings and you are too.
And I feel like something that's really important when you set goals is to not beat
yourself up or hold yourself down if you slip back a little bit.
That's not what this challenge is about.
Like, as you were saying, Toni, it's very much about being mindful of what you're doing
a hundred percent cutting back on things that you maybe were doing a bit excessively like all of us
and so you know if sometimes something comes up and you're like actually like that fits into what
i want to do and for my lifestyle right now and i'm okay with that that is so fine like we're not
here to be like you're the worst because you bought sushi live your life we're just trying
to like be our best selves for this month oh jess you beautiful starfish inspiration
beautiful stuff that's different yeah that's good for you that's unusual well i'm not allowed to buy
any new compliments so well in that case tony i think that's all we have time for today but just
before we head off we'd like to acknowledge and pay respect to australia's aboriginal and
