She's on the money.
She's on the money.
Hello and welcome to She's on the money, the podcast for millennials who want financial
freedom.
Welcome to another one of our Friday drinks episodes from lockdown where we celebrate the money wins from our She's On The Money community and hype each other up significantly because there are so many great wins and confessions that are shared in our community each and every single week on our Facebook group and even through lockdown, our team share them all in our group chat.
So it only feels fair to extend that opportunity to you guys to talk about our group, what's been
going on and update you on what's been happening on the pod if you missed it. So to jump straight
in, Toni Lodge, what happened this week on Money Diaries? So this week, and with all due respect
to our Money Diarist, was a very normal episode and very relatable, which I think was, it's a
great time to have a normal one when there's enough going on in the world that you know a bit
of normality is good when she moved out of home to go to uni she got a credit card kind of snowballed
her own debt which is super relatable for everybody same girl and talked about how she's she then read
the first three chapters of the barefoot investor book and is now you know putting a deposit on a
house and she's killing it she's got a great job and yeah it was just a really nice one for someone
to kind of say i had debt and i had to pay it off and figure it out and also if i may say myself
one of the best quotes ever was shared by me that oh okay yeah i'm glad it's been um you know
researched and uh gone through general consensus to make sure that we're all on board with the fact
that this is according to tony one of the best she's on the money quotes hey you said it in the
episode as well okay but you shouldn't just quote people I'm quoting myself um note that I um I
shared that a thousand dollars is not a lot of money to have but it is a lot of money to owe
yes we had a few people sorry I take everything back and we had a few people saying that was like
a nice little outlook so yeah I think it was a good episode I loved that episode actually as
much as it was quote normal I think it was nice to have one that I related to and I'm sure everybody
best way yeah like everybody can relate to that so that was really good jess what happened this
week on our deep dive so this week you and g spoke about five apps that can make you money
right now today if you picked up your phone this very second um they could make you money i know
it sounds a little scammy a little click baby it's not scammy i promise we aren't a scam correct um
but if you sign up right now you get a 10 discount guys use the code jessica is the best
um but a few different things from like reselling items to picking up odd jobs like pet sitting
different bits and pieces that you can do and we know that a lot of people in our community
are doing it tough right now with lockdown and might need a little bit of extra wiggle room in
their cash flow so hopefully that episode helped you out and gave you some suggestions on what you
might be able to do yeah because we always talk about our friends from shopback and our friends
at sharesies which are arguably two of our favorite apps that make us money but those two
apps require you to have money, to make money and the apps that we recommended, you don't need
anything. You just need to sign up and start doing it, which I really liked. And Georgia and I
promised that you could do most of them from your couch or from someone else's couch in the case of
pet sitting. Jess, we were incredibly complimentary of you, your Facebook manifestation skills,
and the fact that you are essentially the queen of Depop. We'll get to that later. We'll wrap up
our accountability august challenge because i want to know exactly how you've gone on depop
but before we get to all of that because i'm actually really excited about it ryan john what
has been going on in the facebook community this week and what do you want to share all right there
are some great wins this week uh some are very small but i think sometimes the smallest wins
can often be the most hilarious so there's a couple of good ones in here mighty including
Michelle who when she ordered fish and chips got an extra flake hashtag money win well done Michelle
that's even bigger than getting an extra dimmy like flake that's like eight bucks that's a big
deal I feel like you always get an extra potato cake or an extra dim sim but a flake that's big
that's big and I reckon that they're not a good fish and chip shop unless they give you bonus
potato cakes yeah I agree with that now just talking about making money from the couch
Nikki has been listening to she's on the money she's been using spaceship and automating some
some investment each month she just gave her husband her referral code and earned five dollars
without leaving the cast well done uh danielle has been looking for a do i say a faux leather
blazer perfect yep so you're gonna say fox yeah because that's how it's spelled
uh but she was struggling to justify the 90 spend so she jessica ricketed and manifested
a Facebook Marketplace one and picked up the exact same blazer
for $10 instead of $90.
The exact same one?
Yep.
She said it had barely been worn.
Someone wore it once.
It wasn't for them.
She picked it up.
They only live two streets away, so when she did her daily exercise
for the day and went for a walk, she just literally walked
down the street, picked it up, gave them $10 and was on her way.
Well done.
I love that.
Natalie, and I know you've already seen this one, V,
Natalie said, I just re-listened to the Nailing Job Interview 101 episode,
which also lucy's listened to as well apparently i listened to it because i had a job interview
and i just got my dream job signed sealed and delivered so well done that literally made my
heart so happy i saw that but did you see that someone replied and said same so it was two people
who got new jobs because they'd listened to the episode and had implemented our tips and tricks
which i think obviously i'm taking full credit for them getting their new jobs when we had probably
absolutely nothing to do with it that's good don't say yourself sure there's some really good tips in
the interview episode and some of them seem like until someone mentions it you go oh of course but
it's really easy to implement so i'm happy for natalie and she graduates uni at the end of this
year and the job starts in february so imagine you're halfway you're halfway through last year
and you've already got a job ready to go it's such a nice feeling so dreamy i love that for her
jessica got offered a new position at work she's only been there for two months good job
Ryan, you outed me.
A different Jessica has got offered a new position at her work.
She's only been there for two months, and she said,
I had imposter syndrome.
I didn't think I could do it.
Two months in, I've got a promotion, an extra $20,000 a year.
Oh, my gosh.
Plus 12% super as well, if you don't mind on top of that.
Well done, Jess.
I don't mind if I do, my friends.
Rhianna, now here's a big one.
I just got pre-approval for a home loan to buy my first house
all on my own. I've been listening to She's On The Money for years. I've been saving hard
and now I've got pre-approval. We're signed off. I just need to find a place.
Oh my gosh, yes. How good is it when people that have been in our community for ages
finally achieve their goals? It's so exciting. It's literally my favorite part of She's On
The Money is you guys sharing what you're achieving with us. We love to share.
And if you want to go check out the property playbook, because I know if she's going to
start doing inspections and looking around there's a whole bunch of tips and tricks and
little things to look out for and hidden costs you might want to avoid so the property playbook
for rihanna um so from rihanna to brianna from re to brie um brie says i haven't spent a single
dollar on petrol all month because of lockdown i guess there is a silver lining that is a pretty
good win that is a win i would love everybody who's potentially in a position where they
were spending money on petrol to transfer that money to savings
so it doesn't get spent on something else during lockdown, though.
It's aggressive language from Victoria Devine, but very smart.
I'm just an aggressive kind of person, guys.
It's just who I am.
And finally, Rachel said,
I've been wanting to buy an outdoor furniture set for my backyard for ages.
Ooh, expensive.
I had no idea how expensive they could be.
I was looking at her a year ago and we just didn't bother
because they were like thousands and thousands of dollars.
Yeah.
so rachel said on sunday morning i went for a run and someone had put a full outdoor setting
on the side of the road in excellent condition it turns out they've upgraded so i just knocked
on the door i said hey mate like did you mean to leave that out yeah or are you just moving in and
you let it out the front i love that she checked though that's so respectful imagine rachel at
money win i robbed these people so uh no it was in excellent condition they had just upgraded so
So she quickly ran home and got the in-laws to, hey, guys, come follow me.
You've got to help me out.
And they carried it down the street on the table and chairs and stuff.
So she said she was looking at spending about $500 minimum,
and that's really minimum.
That's really cheap.
Yeah, I know.
She's like, that was the real bottom end.
But now we've spent $0 and we are set.
So well done, Rachel.
Huge win.
Huge win.
Money win.
Torbs and I did that with a microwave once.
uh we got a um a free microwave and we had to walk it all the way home it was like three blocks
away and we didn't have a car at the time so we just carried it all the way home a microwave is
a lot heavier than you would expect i can imagine good question though did you just find it on the
side of the road no no no okay all right yeah it was a it was a rescue i was about to say did you
literally carry a microwave for three blocks with the hope that it was working
can you imagine if you got it home and they were like that's the reason it was on the side of the
road take it back i feel like that's an interesting thread maybe for friday let us know what's the
best thing you've picked up on the side of the road because i've seen a few i've seen a few good
ones and i've never been so lucky i'm quite envious of the people who find really fantastic
things so i'd love to know what it was i want to know your hard rubbish wins all right let's put
that in the group and i just want to add for hard rubbish when i was really little like probably
grade six grade five i always used to take a bicycle helmet as i walked there's a couple of
kilometers to school because i didn't know what i was going to find on the way but i knew i'd find
something whether it was an old scooter or an old bike or a trolley i just knew there'd be something
rideable on the way to school and i did that every year during hard rubbish and all our friends rock
up like oh we found a scooter oh what'd you find oh we found this but you cared enough to but you
cared enough about your safety you're so sweet my mum told me to and uh and i can tell you that
one day i rode someone's desk chair down the hill to my house towards school oh i'm glad that you
did have a helmet for that that sounds like it could be pretty dangerous yeah it was it really
was we don't condone this to those yeah we don't condone that type of behavior but if you are
going to do it, please take your helmet, my friend. Absolutely. Safety first. Please go to
the She's On The Money Facebook group. Join the 190,000 people in there and tell us your hard
rubbish wins and we'll share them on this podcast next week. All right. Whipping back into this
episode, guys, it is the end of Accountability August. We have been sharing our accountability
tips in the community we've seen you guys all over instagram sharing our little instagram story
posts that you could fill in and share your goals and what you're going to achieve i know that i
definitely haven't stuck to my goal but i've learned a thing or two along the way ryan john
why do you always have to start with me because you know i failed miserably because i just feel
we can only go up from after you how did you go on a little bit fair how did you go during
accountability august so my goal was to not spend any money on uber eats for the entirety of august
and two days after i said that we went into a lockdown and as we've discussed many times if
there's one thing in lockdown you can actually look forward to in your day to give you a little
spark of joy it's food it's food it's food maybe living with my wife is also great but food
generally is great and so i the first few weeks i pushed hard and i i tried to you know use door
dash or use bridget's account but that is cheating it is it really is um and by the last week i've
just really bombed out hard and just to be honest but i just wanted to share two things quickly
I did post a thing on TikTok this week.
I was about to say.
Do you want to describe it, Bea?
You literally posted a TikTok during Accountability August
how the thing you're best at cooking in the kitchen
is actually cooking up excuses to order Uber Eats.
It's my best thing I can cook up.
Now, I posted this.
Alicia Grace commented on TikTok and said,
Ryan, there's still two days left of Accountability August.
Alicia, it's long gone, babe.
It is not wrong.
And I replied to Alicia.
I was like, mate, like you said, Jess,
weeks and weeks have gone past before that was a reality.
But can I just point out, I was adamant that out of the hundreds
of thousands of people in the group that I was not last
and I think I've found someone worse than me.
Well, not worse than me, but just maybe who didn't succeed.
I don't want to be aggressive because I love this.
But Catherine says, I was supposed to go around the house
and sell a whole bunch of things on Facebook Marketplace
and I was going to make a huge profit.
Instead, I accidentally bought a puppy and sold nothing.
Oh, my gosh, that's not failing, that's winning.
That is brilliant.
That is one way to get off doing the challenge, though.
Oh, sorry, accidentally got a puppy.
Accidentally got a puppy, she goes, but don't worry,
September will be my month.
So, nice work, Catherine.
September will also be my month.
Let's not check back on this one, though.
Let's go to Tony.
Can you remind us what you are attempting?
okay so my accountability august challenge was for no discretionary spending so only spending
on things like rent and food and bills anything legally binding i anything legally binding yeah
i didn't buy anything that wasn't like we bought takeaway a couple of times and i i think during
lockdown that's completely excusable everybody is going to say yep she deserves that you gotta
to eat you know yeah it's true girls gotta eat um and i didn't buy anything like any clothes or
anything for the whole month um until saturday i bought a tv so
i didn't buy like a ten dollar top on asos you literally went and bought an entire television
set but i would just like to preface this or not preface because i'm saying it after i would just
like to stick up for myself defend myself thank you um didn't spend money on language apparently
um i've become so much more mindful about things and i haven't sat down and just scrolled through
and added things to my cart which is so easy to do especially when like everybody i've got you
know my cash hub my fund money and i've got all these different accounts so if i know that there's
money in my fun money i don't just go oh i might as well or i like that enough to buy it i was
actually thinking you know what no i don't need that and the tv was a big purchase that we that
my boyfriend and i talked about for a while and we went halves from our fun money instead of being
like oh this is a necessity so i feel like we've come a long way besides the tv tony if you could
put a dollar amount on your discretionary spending for the month do you think oh well i've actually
yeah i can tell you because i um put all of my money into my up saver well you do that tony i
just want to say i'm so impressed that you made it through the whole like that is it not a small
feat do you know especially in lockdown where we're really scrounging around for like a drip
of joy or serotonin um i feel like you've done such a good job yeah i'm so proud of you but i
mean don't get it wrong on wednesday when it hits september 1st i got that serotonin back
so all of the money that i didn't spend or put aside when i went to spend it and by put aside
i mean uh money from my fun money that when i got new fun money like my allowance kicked in
I just put all of that money into like my overflow. Um, and that account has $576 in it.
Oh, that's huge. That is so good. Yep. So I'm going to go and spend that now if we could wrap
this up. Okay. So we'll wrap this up really quickly, but I do have another question for
you, Tony. You mentioned before that it made you feel a little bit more mindful. Do you think
that's going to carry on? Do you think that your spending habits will change because you did this
challenge I think that they will because I feel you know how what's that thing it takes 20 days
to break a habit 28 days to create a habit yeah so I feel like not actually sitting on my phone
and just mindlessly adding things to my cart I feel like actually will make a difference I know
it sounds really silly but it's so easy as well to just spend like you said that ten dollars on
that top on asos or you know just a little bit of money on something when it adds up so quickly but
because i didn't do that at all none of those cheeky ten dollars were ever leaving my account
and it's like when you've done it for a month and you've seen the impact it can actually make
it makes you feel really good i could feel this self-righteous all the time oh my gosh i love that
for you definitely do that more so if you need to raise yourself in the pecking order of your
friends or family just do that you just want to feel better than everybody else take advice from
tony lodge um but i know that i saved quite a bit but i know that jess made quite a bit i did i am
so excited i wasn't sure when we went into lockdown i thought oh that's it like i'm not
going to be able to sell anything because my plan was originally to sell a bunch of stuff on
marketplace what was the goal there was a money goal aiming for 500 um yeah which was a little
spicy but i actually ended up making 837 dollars who is she yes i sold a heap of stuff on depop
including to some beautiful community members many of whom said i've put 24 hours between me
and this purchase and i really want it it aligns with my values and let me tell you that made me
so happy um but i got really lucky and i had an appliance that i had listed on marketplace
ages ago for 150 bucks sell to someone um who lives in my estate and we did just like danielle
i did contactless pickup they just transferred me the money there was no contact and i left it out
the front for them which was awesome and really boosted that money up you know that is so cool
jess that is such a huge effort eight hundred dollars and that's only so proud of you look at
her go my big takeaway I think was that you really don't need the things that you think you do like
I did a big clear out pre-lockdown and had a bunch of stuff to sell and then because I was at home
and bored I went through all my stuff that I'd already been through and I found so much more
stuff that I was like oh like I obviously wasn't ruthless enough the first time I don't need that
I haven't used it in a year or whatever so I feel like yeah just holding on to things that you're
not using is really not serving you when you could sell them and have that money do something
for you, especially if you were to invest it or something like that.
Well, what are you going to do with the $800, Jess?
Is this going into your KitchenAid fund?
No, it's not. It's going into my emergency fund because my emergency fund was pretty
much non-existent. So I had been dipping into it and it had gone down. So I wanted to get
it back up to $1,000 and that almost gets me there, which is amazing.
Nice.
I love that.
Really nice.
That is literally so good, and I love how easy it is to sell things
on Depop and Facebook Marketplace, even during this time.
It's also really easy to buy things on Facebook Marketplace,
and shout out to Alyssa, who I tried to purchase something
from the other day, and she replied to me and said,
Victoria Devine, is this in line with your values?
And I was like, whoa.
Her line, yes.
Called out.
Yes, it is.
Please give me the dress.
Alyssa, are you trying to make a sale or are you not, mate?
Yeah, do you want the money for my money?
Could you imagine if Alyssa worked in retail?
You're going to buy some clothes and they're like,
do you really need this?
Do you really need this?
The answer was yes.
She was a delight to deal with.
I transferred her the money.
She sent me the dress, perfect condition, very happy,
love her Facebook marketplace, win.
But didn't appreciate the sass, but it made good content for our podcast,
so thank you so much, Alyssa, for coming.
V, how was your lunch purchasing or their lack of through the month of August?
Do you know what? I feel like I've been able to stick to this, but I also feel like I've missed
out a bit. Like I've, everybody's had these really good outcomes by you, Ryan. Like Jess
has made 800 bucks. Tony saved like $500 and I'm here ordering rice noodles on Uber Eats at 2 PM
because I forgot to eat lunch because lockdown life just feels like you're on a 17 hour international
flight in your own home um so i feel like i have not done as well as i could have but in saying
that i wasn't in the office so i often did just eat at home because the food was literally right
there in the fridge i didn't have to forethink about taking it to work i'll probably try and
pick the challenge up again when i get back to work and we're back in the office more full time
Shout-out to 2024 when we're back, guys.
Yeah, looking forward to seeing you,
but I think that I'll have to pick it up again
and pick another challenge because I feel like as much
as I love Accountability August,
I'm really looking forward to saving September, guys.
Well, I'll tell you who we are.
I can't do another one.
Yeah, no.
I need to spend some money.
And then blow out October, which will be one of the great months.
Can I just send a shout-out to Talia, who, like Tony,
wanted to do a no-spend month.
Her total of unnecessary spending for the entire month was $61.
She just spent $61 for the whole month.
Whoa.
That self-control is a massive flex.
I thought you were going to say that's what she saved.
I was like, Talia, you didn't do as well as me.
She only spent $60.
$61 spent, which is unbelievable.
I reckon I spent that today in Uber Eats.
I spent that at lunch.
So well done.
Well done.
Oh, so Ryan's rich, rich, guys.
Yeah.
You're not just spending $61 on lunch.
Here I am being like, what's the cheapest with free delivery on Uber?
I don't even know what that is.
Yeah, I just click the buttons.
I like it.
Jess's takeaway was there's way more stuff in your house than you actually need.
And my takeaway was.
Takeaway.
Beers.
Takeaway.
Burgers.
thank you very much thank you for coming ryan um i i really liked this challenge i feel like
accountability august is definitely something we'll pick up again as a community next year if
you guys have any ideas that you want to share with us for other monthly challenges that we
could do or the community could participate in we want to hear about them comment on our instagram
or post them in our facebook group we would adore hearing about them but as always guys i think that
is all we have time for today. So just before we head off, we'd like to acknowledge and pay
respect to Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They're the traditional
custodians of the lands, the waterways and the skies all across Australia. We thank you for
sharing and for caring for the land on which we are able to learn. We pay our respects to elders
past and present and we share our friendship and our kindness. The advice shared on She's on the
money is generally nature and does not consider your individual circumstances she's on the money
exists purely for educational purposes and should not be relied upon to make an investment or any
financial decision and we promise that victoria divine is an authorized representative of
australia pacific funds management proprietary limited abn 34132463257 afsl 339151 i've got a
recommendation just before we leave oh fun go and buy two copies of victoria divine's book she's on
the money the first one you buy purposely for yourself and the second one you buy passively
aggressively for your friend who's terrible with money and give that to them as a gift
oh passive aggressive book sales i love it yeah um she actually gets more money out of the passive
aggressive yeah she charges more for those and the satisfaction really it just does a better deal
hey how's your saviour going along
mmm interesting
try reading this maybe
bought you one for a present
go and enjoy that
it's gonna make a really good
Christmas gift for some people
I feel like it might become
that gift that you get people
and then they're low-key mad
at you about it on Christmas day
but then next year they're like
oh hey Tony remember that present
you got that I didn't love
so good changed my life
yeah and now I've got so much money
I've bought you six playstations
for Christmas
oh my gosh
genius
I've always wanted six playstations
see you next week guys
Bye.
Bye.
