She's on the money.
She's on the money.
Hello and welcome to the last episode of She's on the money,
the podcast for millennials who want financial freedom. Now, that sounded pretty dramatic. I
didn't mean the last ever episode of She's on the Money. I meant the last episode for the year of
2021. Not ever, but you know, drama is my thing. We'll keep it there. I'm not going to re-record
that. This is our Friday drinks episode where we get to celebrate the money wins from our She's
on the Money community. There are so many great money wins and confessions shared each and every
single week in our Facebook group. And Jess, George and I spent a very big part of our week
having a chat about all that you guys achieve. This week, we are celebrating you. We are
celebrating the end of the year and we are so excited to dive right in. But first cab off the
rank, Miss Jessica Ricci, what happened in Money Diaries this week? So, this week's diarist chatted
to us about, I guess, her youth. She grew up in a low-income household. There was a history of
abuse there, which was obviously really tough. And her mom had a history of mental illness. So
there were a lot of factors in her kind of early childhood that really shaped her and her habits
as an adult. She's had a bit of a rough go of it after the last few years. She split with her
partner who she had bought land with. It was a whole thing. And it was just a really insightful
discussion around, I guess, how your childhood and how your money story really can shape your
direction as an adult. She's worked incredibly hard to put herself in a different position and
change that story, which was really inspiring. But I guess we don't always delve too deeply
into childhood. Obviously, we just chat about whatever the diarist is comfortable sharing and
wherever that journey takes us, no two are the same. So, it was just really interesting and
I'm so grateful that she was happy to share such a personal story with us.
I'm always honestly so grateful for the stories that the money diarists are willing to share with
us so next year we are obviously going to be sharing so so many more money diaries so if
you've ever thought oh my gosh like I want to be on it but I'm really nervous please don't be
we definitely make sure that every piece of information that you give to us is de-identified
and that you are all safe and sound and I would love to think that we are a very safe space to
share that story and we love it like we literally adore having chats with you guys so if you've
ever wondered, I should be a money diarist, now's the time to slide into our DMs as we start booking
up money diaries for 2022. And when we say slide into our DMs, we mean fill out the form on our
website because that's what we mean. That's what we mean because too many times have we lost good
money stories in our DMs because as you guys can imagine, people reply to our stories and they just
get all messy. So, if you want to be on the show, please jump on the website, fill out the form and
we will get back to you George getting back to you though hello my friend what happened on Wednesday
on the show hello team uh so Wednesday was our final Wednesday deep dive episode of the year
which was a dream it was exciting it was fun we spoke about how to improve our credit scores and
also what credit scores are that was very exciting I mean it doesn't sound that exciting but it was
really interesting and I feel like the main takeaway from the episode was that credit scores
well improving credit scores rather takes a really long time there's no like not get rich
quick scheme but there's no quick way of doing it fixed quick get fixed yes well done well done that
was that was well said there's a few kind of scammy like companies out there that we should
all be really mindful of so yeah and I know that we've done it if you didn't listen to it I get it
if you were like, look, V, I thought you already did an episode on this before. But yes, it is
different content, can promise you that. But the reason we thought it was so important to talk
about credit scores again is because there's just so much misinformation flying around the internet
at this point in time about credit scores. And I'm seeing in our community, so many people talk
about very American ways of approaching credit scores. And I just don't want that to be our
narrative. Like our money system, as much as we both function in dollars, is not the same as the
US system. And the same requirements that exist to have a good credit score in the US are not
the requirements to have a good credit score in Australia. So, I think we really need to be privy
to what the Australian expectations are so that we can do the best thing by us. But summary from
all of that is you do not need a credit card to have a good credit score here in Australia.
I feel like the really good thing about that episode as well as compared to the original
credit score ep is that this one had some really great actionable steps, whereas the first ep was
more about what is a credit score? Why might you need it? So, if you're wanting to improve your
score, it's a question we see all the time on Facebook. It's the ep for you.
Yeah, I loved it. But I also love talking about money. I love talking about credit scores. I love
talking about fixing our finances. And it was a pretty good ep in my opinion, but I'm going to
just call it out here and say that I'm quite biased and always have been about the She's
on the Money episode. So, I'll let you guys make your own decisions and we will move on
to arguably my favorite and the most fun part of this show. And that is when Georgia tells us her
favorite money wins and confessions from the She's on the Money community from this week.
Georgia, throw them at us. What have you got this week?
Ladies, we have some absolute belters coming your way. So, strap yourselves in. It's going
be a good time we are scrapped in and ready jess have you got your buckle on buckle and helmet i'm
excited oh my gosh so our first win is from samantha jones i know we don't usually do surnames
but i couldn't help myself because of sex in the city oh sorry sex and the city who am i
so samantha bought a handbag for 50 a couple of months ago very sj of her isn't it precisely and
guess what happened? What? She found 50 bucks in it. She sold it recently for $400. What? Naughty
girl. How? I'd love to know. I want to see the bag. I'm very excited about this. Yeah. Well done,
Samantha. What a genius. I thought she was going to tell us that cute story where, you know,
you go to the op shop, you buy a bag and then you find the money in the bag. Like that would
also be a good money win. I wonder how many times that happens to people and whether we should start
a business purchasing secondhand handbags to find the cash inside.
I imagine it would be very profitable.
Yeah, maybe I'll just stick in my own financial advice lane.
Maybe. Our next win here, guys, is from Riley. So, sadly, she was scammed out of $410
three years ago after making a purchase on Facebook Marketplace. Maybe she bought the
handbag. Am I right? The 10 was the shipping. So, she made the purchase on Facebook marketplace
and paid via a bank transfer, which can be a little risky. She contacted her bank, their bank
and the police to try and recover the funds. But in the end, she chalked it up to an expensive
but valuable lesson. Fast forward to last Thursday, she got an email from her bank saying
they'd recovered the full amount wow that took forever it did take a while but it paid off in
the end she's got the 410 back in her account and it's a christmas miracle she's written so
and you know what those money wins are the sweetest ones because you had written that off
like you didn't expect that that was going to be a win it wasn't like look i've been waiting
ages and i finally got that 400 bucks she'd written that off thought it didn't exist and
then bam, it popped back into her life. Thank you, Santa Claus. Renee is our next win. So,
she received a letter from Vic Rhodes offering her a free three-year license as she's coming
off her P's because she hasn't had any fines or lost any points. She gets it for free on
relatable content. That never happened to me. It's also extremely expensive. So, that is a huge
win. That's actually a thing. If you don't get any points or you don't get any fines or lose
anything during your beginning of your car driving journey, they do offer that to you. But sadly,
that was never extended to me because I'm not responsible enough. Naughty. I don't hear you
guys being like, yeah, okay, I got that offered to me, Jess, George. I would like to plead the
remember yeah our next win here is from anna so she went clothes shopping for the first time in
over 12 months in melbourne over the weekend she lives regionally she went from shop to shop tried
on all of the clothes and then worked out what she wanted to buy then she checked for them on
shop back went home let herself think on what she actually wanted culled out what she didn't need
and then purchase it all through ShopBag. You are a she's on the money dream child.
You are the poster child for what we want everybody to do in 2022.
Very impressed. Well done, Anna.
Yeah, I don't have that level of self-control. If I'm going out shopping and I've made the
decision to purchase something and I've headed out and made the trip, especially if I was regional,
I don't have the self-control to then not purchase it in the moment.
All the more impressive.
No, no, that's why it's so impressive. I love her.
Our next win here is from Crystal.
Well, it's not a win yet, but she hopes it will be.
She's turned her book addiction into a side hustle
and is selling her pre-loved books online.
Little biz.
Oh, my gosh, I love that.
Do you reckon she sold the She's On The Money book?
Oh.
Do you reckon she got a good return on her investment?
No?
Okay, that's falling short.
Crickets.
Crickets.
George, what else have you got to share with the community this week?
So, our final win slash loss here, ladies, comes from Natasha.
So, she decided she did not want to go into the new year with any debt.
So, she dipped into her emergency fund to pay off her credit card.
Now, she can focus on building her savings for the new year ahead.
Yes, queen.
Is this a good idea, V?
I wanted to know what you thought.
Do you know what?
I don't believe that you have savings if you have debt.
If you have savings sitting in your account and then you also have a debt that you are
paying interest on, you really need to be prioritizing getting rid of that debt. In saying
that, I do also vehemently believe that you need an emergency fund while you're in debt as well.
So, I wouldn't say, if you've got an emergency fund, spend that. No, we have our base. But if
you have additional wiggle room in your emergency fund, or you've got some savings to get rid of
debt, I would absolutely be prioritizing that. Because the rule is, if you have debt, you do
not have savings. And at the end of the day, you're just putting off and actually costing
yourself more over the long term because any debt is going to be accruing interest and those
savings are sitting there not actually working for you. So, make them work for you. Get rid of
your debt. I completely get it. If you're like, but Vee, I've saved up so hard and that money
sitting there and I don't want to pay it off because then I'll have nothing. No, no, that's
not how it works. You are already behind if that is the mindset we are approaching it with.
find your clean slate if you've got the potential to do that. But again, always make sure you do
have that emergency fund. I'm not saying spend your emergency funds on getting out of debt,
because I do think that regardless of where we are, we need to always have access to cash to
get out of any circumstance, situation or money related anything. And that's where your emergency
fund comes into play. And Natasha said that she only dipped into her emergency fund. She didn't
drain it all. So, that's a great outcome. There you go. Good outcome. Love that for you. And
starting the new year with no debt, what a better way. How exciting. All righty. So, I thought that
we could have a little chat. It's the last episode of the year. The vibes are high. We're just kind
of reflecting a little bit and we've been doing this as a team anyway. Chatting about the year
that was, it's been a hectic one to say the very least. Shit show. Oh, wait, what? Yes, that is
garbage fire uh but there has been a lot of really fun good things that have come out of
our community specifically as well so i thought let's be a little self-indulgent and take a moment
just to celebrate us and everything that we've done oh you're so cute and just to say thank you
as well because we've had an epic year and we could not have done it without the community
without the people listening the reason we get to do what we do and help people and share their
stories and touch all of these lives am I being incredibly dramatic right now I am I'm sorry
no you're not we get to do what we love every day because you guys exist and that is so special and
so lucky and I don't think that we even comprehend the gravity of that situation until we get to
sit down and be like how cool is that like we've done some really epic things and I mean
Jess you've officially been with us more than a year you joined last December which is
so, so exciting. So, happy anniversary, babe. Thank you. Happy to be here. So, that was a great
acquisition to the community. We have moved offices, which was also really fun. We grew
and we got a bigger office and then we promptly had to go straight back home and work from home,
which is fine, but we can tell everybody else that we've got cute office space. What else have
we done g we have done three episodes a week and there's been no weeks off so three times 52 that's
150 plus some more episodes we have a lot of episodes we have pumped out the content and i'm
just so proud of our team for doing that because it's one of those things that i remember last year
sitting down it was december and we're talking about what could we do to enhance the she's on
the Money community, enhance the podcast. Like how do we make it better? We love Money Diaries.
We love the deep dives. We love our banter. And that's how we've broken them into those three
episodes. And so breaking it into the three episodes felt incredibly overwhelming. And the
fact that the She's on the Money team has not only done those three episodes each and every single
week, but we've also brought to the table two brand new shows. We've got the Property Playbook
and the business bible during that time at one stage this year we were doing an episode a day
every single day of every single week for a few months there so jess george the she's on the money
team you guys have been absolutely stellar like could not be more proud to call you my little
she's on the money fam oh stop it i mean in other news not to take a complete segue but i mean i
don't even know if we're going chronologically at this point, but are we going to talk about the
book? Oh, yes. We finally got the She's on the Money book published. We've been talking about
it for years since before I worked here. Since before you worked here, I have been writing this
book. It took a good two years to get off the ground because turns out writing a book is
actually a lot bigger of a project than I had anticipated. And honestly, getting that first
book in the mail was one of the best days of my entire life. Jess, I remember, followed me down
the hall when we were told that it had been delivered and I was just crying and I was so
excited. But we got that book done. We got it published. My Penguin Random House family have
been nothing but supportive. They are honestly such an incredible publisher to have gone through.
But not only did we get that book up and running, we became a best-selling book in the country.
Like we were number one in Dimex. We were number one on Booktopia. We were number one on Bookdepository. Like what? Who would have even seen that coming? But that's not because of me. That's not because of the content. And sadly, it's not because of Jess or George. It's actually because of the She's On The Money community and the support that you guys showed us through that period of time when we launched it. You guys were incredible. But then also you continue to purchase it.
And, you know, even through this festive period, we've seen so many people purchasing it for
their friends and their family.
And oh, my gosh, my heart, like knowing that that book is out there and the impact that
it is having on people's lives literally is the coolest thing ever.
I don't know if I can do this, but unofficially off the record, could there possibly be another
book on the way?
Look, there could possibly be another book on the way.
And for those of you who have been following my social media and going, Victoria, are you ever
going to stop working? The answer is no, because I'm actually in the middle of writing my second
book and the manuscript, guys, is due in March. So that book is apparently, who knows, because
timeframes can sometimes get pushed out, but you might find another She's on the Money book on the
shelves by September 2022, which is, oh my gosh, my wildest dreams are literally coming true.
Can you give us any indication, Vee, or is it too early to tell us a little bit about what maybe-
Oh, no. No.
I can tell you.
Oh, you can?
I can tell you. Are you ready? Sit down. It's my favorite topic, guys. She's on the money
was written because I wanted to give you a solid foundational understanding of your money story,
and of budgeting, and cash flow, and of what investment is, and what insurance is,
and what you need when it comes to protecting yourself and how to plan for things and how to
actually manage money in a way that's responsible, but really reflects your lifestyle and doesn't
make you compromise everything or sacrifice the life that you want to have. And that is so
important to have as those foundational blocks before you begin investing. So, the She's on the
Money second book doesn't have a name yet because I'm not sassy or punny in any way, shape or form.
So I've thrown it back to my publishers at Penguin and said, can you guys have a little
bit of a brainstorm around what this book could potentially be called?
But the book is going to be on the A to Z of investing so that you guys can take it
to the next level and really understand investing to the degree that you guys are demanding
at the moment.
So obviously in She's on the Money, we covered it.
There was a chapter on investing and it introduced you to everything that I needed you to know
as a foundational level.
But this will be taking those foundations to the next level to really understand what a long-term
strategy is going to look like and how that works and what that means and what different products
look like and how they work. And I'm just really excited while I'm pulling this together because
this book is not just me talking about investment. It's literally the thing that I do every day with
my clients. And I'm just like, oh my gosh, and we could talk about this. Oh, and we really need to
talk about that and oh I wouldn't want to miss out on this so it's been an absolute joy to be
pulling together and doing the research for and that's just it gets me so excited and I cannot
believe that this is my job like what crazy crazy the other little little thing that happened this
year V was that you were listed in Forbes's 30 under 30 just before you turned 30 you just smack
in there doll by the skin of my teeth guys i i didn't even know i was gonna slide in there that
was an absolute shock how strange what a flex that's legit forbes baby oh my gosh incredible
um for me because i'm the little content queen we hit 200 000 members in our facebook group
my little brain can't even begin to comprehend what that number looks like that's so many people
like that is so many people who are excited about creating financial freedom and talking about money
and oh my god like I cannot begin to tell you how exciting that is like I remember and you guys
have probably heard this story if you've listened to a few of our podcasts but the she's on the
Money podcast was born after the Facebook group existed. So the Facebook group existed because I
used to run these workshops called She's on the Money to empower people to understand finances
and understand super and investment and insurance. And I used to run these workshops so that we could
empower people. And I wanted to take that conversation further and have more open,
honest chats about things. I was like, you know what I'll do? I'll start a Facebook group.
And at the time I felt like I was the lamest person in the entire world. Like I remember
being like to my sister, hey, I just posted something in my Facebook group with four
friends. Can you like it? And my sister would like it. And I would ask my girlfriends to do
the same. I'd be like, oh, hey, I'm feeling a bit nervous, but I just posted this tip in
She's On The Money. And they'd be like, what's that? And I'd be like, oh, it's like this Facebook
group that I've started. And they'd be like, oh, cool V, like, what are you doing? And that slowly
grew and I remember it grew by me adding friends and family and people that went to my workshops
and it was very exciting and then people started joining and I'd be like I don't know you and then
I'd get a message from someone being like oh hey um V I know this is really strange I went to one
of your workshops but I think my sister would love your Facebook group can I add her and I'd be like
oh yeah the more the merrier and I remember when it tipped over a thousand people and I thought
that was the most people that I'd ever I could fathom in the entire world I was like how do all
these people how have they found it to my facebook group and jess for you to then be like hey like
three years later we're at 200 000 i'm like what like where have you all come from and how how are
you so excited about this because i felt so lame when i started she's on the money but now it's
like a thing now it's a book it's a podcast it's a whole community what absolutely wild to put that
into some perspective for all my fellow visual people out there that is over double the capacity
of the mcg so we have two mcgs worth of humans sharing their tips and tricks who all want to
be financially free oh my heart can you imagine it's next level we also ticked over 100k on
instagram we got to work with some of our favorite brands we got to give away so many fantastic
things. And we're hoping that that's going to be bigger and better. We're going to get someone a
Dyson Airwrap. It's my personal mission to get someone an Airwrap in 2022. Dyson, if you are
listening, Jess would like to work more closely with you. And we would really like a Dyson Airwrap
to give away to our community. A thousand percent. Okay. So, that's everything that has happened,
ladies. But what's ahead in 2022? What's on the agenda with Shiz and the Money? I mean,
A lot also happened like every single week, just to like go back to what happened.
Every single week, guys, Jess has been posting in the community about the money wins and
confessions people have been having.
And the amount of times I've seen people say, I got out of debt this year.
I have changed my money story.
I got out of an abusive relationship.
I'm finally on top of my credit card.
I finally have an emergency fund.
Oh my gosh, I could pay vet bills without being stressed.
I didn't have to worry about having money for groceries this week.
Guys, I cannot tell you how proud I am of every single person's personal journey over the last
12 months in the She's On The Money community. It is not only cool that you guys have done that
for yourselves, but you've shared it with us and known how important it is to us that that is
vocalized because for every money win that is shared, I guarantee you there's 10 that haven't
been because people don't always want to, you know, talk about money on the internet. But every
single time you do that, you're giving permission to somebody else to talk about money more openly.
And how cool is it that we are now at a stage where every single week it has gone from me having
what I thought was a lame Facebook group where I used to ask my sister to like and comment on my
posts to just having to turn comments off on old threads because there are literally thousands of
comments of people sharing their money wins and sharing their confessions and every single week
Jess posts a new thread and says right guys what are your wins this week and we get to learn from
them we get to celebrate them and share them and I cannot begin to tell you how special that is and
I promise you it will not go anywhere it will happen again all next year but George your question
what's coming next year what have we got in store look we won't be getting rid of any of the episodes
we will still be here with our bells on but the beautiful thing about 2022 is that we are going
to have a bit more freedom we're going to be able to travel g not personally but she's on the money
is going to be able to travel touch would be able to do yeah look knock on wood but we're going to
be able to do events we're going to be able to do a tour we are going to be able to meet you guys
which for me has been one of the hardest parts of growing she's on the money you know we just
was celebrating before we launched the book and I'm so proud of that. But one of the most
heartbreaking parts of that was I wanted to share that with the community. I wanted to meet you guys.
I wanted to hug people and, you know, share that in person. But unfortunately, because 2021 was
the year that was, that wasn't an option. So our priority next year is getting out and sharing
content with you and doing events. And I'm pretty sure the first event we'll do next year is for
International Women's Day. So keep your eyes peeled because we will be doing that in a couple
of locations, not just Melbourne. That's in March, isn't it? Or May? It is in March. It is in March
and those are coming and we are already in the background pulling that together. So keep your
eyes peeled because unfortunately we will have limited tickets. So if you're interested in that,
definitely be on our EDM and sign up to our newsletter on our website to make sure that you
are in the know because that is who we will tell first. Our email list and our Facebook group and
then we'll launch it to the public. So, if you're interested in coming to that, please make sure you
are keeping your eyes peeled and checking out what we're up to because that will be announced early
next year. Exciting stuff. I know, right? Like, imagine real live events. Before we wrap this
episode, the last one of the year, normally we put a listener question here but I've been thinking to
myself. And I actually have a little question that I would like to ask. I can pretend to be
a listener if you would like me to. I do know that when you come into the
office in the mornings, Jess, sometimes you do put your phone down and she's on the money is
on your phone. I'm like, geez, Louise, are you not sick of our voices? Like you get them 24-7
in the office and then you listen to the episodes as well. Who are you? So, technically you are a
listener. It could be a listener question. A thousand percent. So, with the silly season
being here, I've been thinking a lot about clothes. The whole having a dress or an outfit
for an event that you then perhaps don't want to wear for a while and it sits in your closet while
you wait for some time to re-wear it at a later occasion with different people.
How do we feel about renting out your dresses? Because I've seen people doing it on Depop and
Instagram. I know there's some websites out there and maybe this is something that the community can
chime in on if any of them do it. But I just have some beautiful dresses that maybe cost me a little
bit of money, if we're being honest, that I would love to see doing something. But then I got
thinking, oh, the tax implications and I mean, the sending and the posting and the, is it even
worth it? So, I wanted to see the, have you ever thought about it? Have you heard of anyone doing
it? Is it a good idea? I have heard of lots of people doing it. I have pondered the idea
historically, but at the same time, I think the administration would actually be a lot of time,
energy, and effort. And unfortunately, I don't know, maybe this isn't the truth, but from my
opinion, I don't think it's like lending a dress to a girlfriend. Like, I know that if I lent you
a dress, Jess, it would come back in the same or better condition. Like, you're not going to not
look after my things. Whereas I don't think that that is true for people who just hire dresses and
you don't know them. Like who knows how they're going to treat them or if they're going to wear
it to their uni ball and it's going to come back with questionable things all over the dress and
you're going to have to dry clean it. I just, I don't know if I have time to facilitate that. I
mean, my friends and my family know that my wardrobe is completely open for borrowing and
sharing and I really love that, but I don't know if I'd ever do it on the internet, but it could
be a good little side hustle. Well, that's what I was thinking. I see these girls and they're
renting dresses for, I mean, obviously depending on where you purchase it from, a couple of hundred
bucks. And I'm like, rent a dress out. Oh my God, what? Yeah, rent a dress out a couple of times
and it's paid for itself, which is what I found so appealing. And you're absolutely right. I guess
the backend admin of it, the posting and the dry cleaning and all of that stuff probably is
something that I need to think about. In terms of tax, I'm assuming that money that I would earn,
I'd have to be declaring. Yes, you would. It is taxable income. But in saying that,
it depends on whether you're making that a business or it's just a bit of a hobby on the
side. You could potentially talk to your accountant about deeming it as income derived from a hobby,
which is not taxable up until a certain point. So, I think you can make up to $5,000 from a hobby
without having it taxed, but that is quite fickle. And before you make that decision and go, well,
well, I'll just claim it as a hobby. Like do talk to your accountant because I know a lot of people
have gotten in a bit of trouble for being like, oh, it's a hobby. So, for example, I know someone
who claimed Uber as a hobby just because they did it a couple of times and they were like,
oh, it was just for fun. But Uber is definitely not a hobby. It is definitely a business and
because you have to register, et cetera, et cetera, it wasn't. So, have a chat with your
accountant. But if you're only doing it here, there and everywhere, maybe it could be categorized as
a hobby yeah good way of like paying off a dress I like that that's what I thought like self-paying
so maybe if anyone's ever done it and has any feedback let me know I'm open to it I'm content
it's also a really good point that you bring up like we have so many beautiful clothes and I'm a
really big fan of re-wearing dresses like I didn't buy a dress to wear once I wore it because I put
it on and it made me feel good and I really liked it and therefore I'm very likely to want to wear
it to a lot of different events. Like I have this blue striped dress. And if you're an OG Facebook
group member from like three years ago, you would have seen it a million times. But it's like the
sisterhood of the traveling dress. Like I've worn it to multiple weddings, multiple events. I'm
pretty sure every single one of my friends at some point or another has worn it. My sister has worn
it. Like everybody has worn this dress. And I just think there's something really nice about a dress
that carries a level of sentimental value. So, maybe in 2022, if you've got events, because I
feel like weddings and big events are back on, see if you could maybe borrow a dress from a friend
before going shopping for a brand new one and create a money win for yourself and create a
good memory with a beautiful dress that you saw on a friend one time.
