Welcome back to another one of our Friday Drinks episodes where we get to celebrate the money wins from our community and have a chat about the week that was. Let's jump straight in. We have Tony.

Tony, what was on this week's Money Diaries? So we talked to a lovely young woman who talked us through how her finances have been impacted by losing her mum at only 18 years old. And she talked to us about how she had to move out of home. She had no furniture, didn't have anything with her little sister, and they had to move into like a share house flat um so they were paying rent and all these things for the first suddenly at 18 in their life yeah after their mum passed away which is really really horrible as if you don't have enough to deal with right exactly yeah and um obviously like i lost my

mom around the same age and i was saying you know you just feel so out of control at that time as well and she said yeah it's only feels like i'm only just kind of coming around to really getting past it and because it's just so much to take on let alone like thinking about how you're going to eat and where you're going to live you know which would just be awful um so it was a really insightful chat and i hope that if you listen to it that you liked it and you got like a bit of a different perspective and and understand that no one chooses to get into debt and if people are in debt it's not because they chose it it's because they were probably in a bit of a crappy situation and they didn't have another option yeah and if it's debt or eight i mean exactly exactly but we were

having this conversation earlier today Tony where you just never know you just never know someone's circumstances whether that's you looking at their resume and wondering what their jobs were and why they chose those or you know why they are in so much debt like it's not your position to judge them and by judging them you're assuming a lot about their circumstance which you don't have the information on so I just think it's you know a good reminder that you never know anything about somebody unless you've walked a mile in their shoes so that story was definitely you know thankfully not something i could relate to yeah but was such a special story to have shared you know with the community but also with me like i felt so grateful that someone was willing to

have that conversation and even that you were willing to open up about your experience having gone through something similar and you know i'm just really proud of the space that we have where people are comfortable doing that um and if you were listening to that and that's something you've been through or you need some support if you've lost your mom you can contact our friends at Motherless Daughters Australia. Jess, what did we go over with George? So you and George had a chat about credit scores and particularly all of the myths that surround

them, because I feel like we have this misunderstanding from TV and movies that, you know, we need a credit card to have credit and all of these other things, which actually aren't necessarily true. So, UNG went through, busted a few myths, spoke about how to improve your credit score as well if that's something you want to do. So, definitely well worth a listen. And how to do a soft check,

the difference between a soft and a hard check. Yeah, and what can impact your credit score versus not. Checking is not bad, you just don't want it officially inquired on, like when you apply for a credit card or a car loan. Yeah. Question.

Yes. Of all the topics in finance, a credit scores is credit scores the topic that has the most misconceptions myths untruths so i feel like in australia and all the questions we get that sometimes don't even make it into the group but it just feels like no one gets it because the us is so different to us as well but can you think of a more misinformed area of finance than credit yeah what investing investing it's so risky you're gonna lose all your money um so yeah i'd probably say investing but credit scores everyone's just like you do need a credit card to get a good credit score to get a home loan

and to me that just it's wild and get that information in the bin because it's you subscribing to an American methodology but I also think that there's a lot of misconception around what investing is and to be honest over the long term good investment is relatively safe and it is you know if we look at the performance and I was having a chat today with Charlotte who's someone in our office about historical performance of the share market and different assets over time and if you look at the share market over the last 30 years nobody has lost money if they've stayed invested the people who have lost money are the ones who have exited because they're worried or had to leave or you know haven't had the benefit of time on their side and I think that there's probably a

lot of misconception around that topic because you know everyone has a credit score and it's not I guess that consequential it is when it comes to getting loans but not investing can literally ruin your entire future and we just don't have enough education on the fact that you can do it safely and in line with your risk profile and you can pick stocks that over the long term grow and benefit you and i'll stop harping on about investment but we all know how i feel about that go listen to our entire investing series on it um but all the stuff about credit scores was actually really really interesting and it's one of our most requested things yeah in our facebook group people are always like so what's the deal with a credit score and a credit check and all

of that so if you've ever found yourself wondering about that or you watched american pie so you think you need to get a credit card to get a credit rating you're wrong and you need to listen to the episode that is not what i got from american pie but okay i was gonna say of all the scenes from that movie that is not the one that comes to mind straight away let's go straight into jessica we actually have a very exciting announcement to make about property playbook don't we oh my gosh yes and firstly if you don't know property playbook is our property based podcast we still get people being like hey can you recommend a podcast about property and we have one Spoiler alert, we have one.

much i'm very grateful for the opportunity you you better all right moving on ryan what is going on in the community this week all right there's some fun ones this week but this one is just such a good piece of advice that everyone should take on board jemma invest it's uh it's get credit cards if you want a house guys just go watch american jokes jokes yeah um jemma says after years of just renewing my car insurance just out of convenience it might have been a direct debit it or just yep same again this year she said i actually bothered to shop around this year and just see what's going on genius i managed to secure a better policy for 350 cheaper than the one i was with so she was getting more coverage money win for 350 cheaper and because they're

always incentivizing she got a hundred dollar gift card just for signing up so i'll say 450 worth of value yeah and like i said it seems like an easy thing and i'm guilty of it yeah just free news same again next year but shop around don't do it a good deal don't do it our friends that get reminded actually help you make sure that you always know what last year's fees were as well so they put it front of mind so you can put a reminder in your app so that if you want to go and check it you've actually got all the resources that you need to call them up and be like well actually i know that it was this last year because car insurance in particular is pretty sneaky they don't tell you what you paid last year they just send you the new bill and the invoice

for what it's going to cost this year. And you're like, oh, like, I think it was around $700, but they've sent you an invoice for like $780. And you're like, oh, yeah, that feels right. But it wasn't and it creeped up. And so, yeah, that would be my sneaky hot tip for today. That's awesome. Now, Bronte's done something really well, but I don't like her.

She said, I didn't feel like going for a run this morning because it was too cold. And I'm like, talk to me, sister. It could be 50 degrees and it's too hot for me. Wait, that doesn't make sense. i'm just coming up with any excuse i can i didn't go on a run because but good on you bronte well and then bronte's bronte and i was like yeah i'm with you bronte i get it she goes but i forced myself and got out there anyway oh yeah not relatable

she says i'm glad i did because when i was running i found 50 bucks on the ground that's a good enough incentive for me to start running i'm gonna find 50 bucks maybe one day way to just rub it in bronte that you're better than all of us well done 50 bucks now nikki was prepared to spend 1 250 bucks on bedside tables that feels like a lot that's a lot right that's a lot maybe like wood or like yeah they'd be delicious come on over to my house i have ikea once and have done since first year university can't stop won't stop will not change maybe i will one day when i grow up so nikki was ready to spend the money then she saw a kmart diy hack on tiktok was it jessica's tiktok about a bedside table hack no we hacked um a kmart table for the

you thought that lash extensions were reappliable so lily and her sister fake eyelashes are they hired a rack at a pre-loved fashion boutique yep i understand that what does that mean so it means that you get like a rack in a shop and it's kind of like if you went to like a flea market you get to resell all your stuff but you're in a shop so people can like go and look at it and try it on and stuff and the shop takes a cut or whatever however yeah or you pay a fee to have the rack actually yeah well she paid 80 for two weeks which is pretty cheap considering they made two thousand three hundred and six dollars is this place in melbourne because we should definitely do that can we have a shit on the money rack like i mean clothing

i don't have any clothes that are worth that much you do you're wearing a bing jumper right now you're like i'm not gonna sell it rich rich well well done to lily and her sister that's really impressive now i asked in the slack today uh which is a lot of the group chat of us here at isn't the money who is the best fashion correspondent between jessica tony and victoria what did we come up with tony just said not her i said either of these girls jess used to work at glassons so i feel like i vote jess yeah okay um our fashion correspondent jess crossing live now god dream job jess i've just texted you can you describe the item oh there it is glad you found d.o.i sound effects um i'm gonna say the style is gorman s it is gorman okay so it's a gorman

s i can't tell if it's a jumpsuit from the way that it's folding potentially a jumpsuit maybe a dress um like mid-thigh fluttery sleeves it's pink with like a yellow black white and turquoise pattern on it and a v-neck that would be so expensive has it got a collar no collar v-neck Yeah, okay. Well, I wasn't sure if it's V-neck collar. V-neck and it's like a crossover. Oh, like a little wrapping thing going on. So, considering it is, in fact, from Gorman,

if you were to throw a number out, what would that be worth? $200. Yeah, that's Spenner. I'd say like $240. Introducing June, who's a member of the She's On The Money community. Intra-June-sing. Intra-June-sing. She paid $1 for that item at an op shop because she realised it was valuable.

Then she went home, flipped it on Facebook Marketplace for $90. making an $89 profit from the shops. Here's the photo for you guys. That is exactly what I thought that would look like. And that picture is actually in the thread of Money Wins this week. So if everyone else wants to go check it out. But for a dollar? She's cute. That's a bargain. What is that op shop thinking? Lift. I feel like it's normally the other way around.

Normally op shops have been marking up in recent years. Look, I haven't been recently, but the last time I went to an op shop, I was genuinely surprised by how expensive the stuff there was. Really expensive. I was like, hold up, hold up. What do you mean? $40. It's because people troll through it. And I'm not being aggressive towards you, June, but people troll through, get all of the good stuff and then resell it.

So I feel like op shops have had to. I mean, it's genius, but yeah, they have to. Yeah, but then when you go to like have a bit of a scalp, you can't get anything good because they're reselling it all for $100 like on Chapel Street. and it's shitty because for some people like it's a really great way to access quality clothing at an affordable price point um so i mean i mean this is a hot topic debate debate debate move on move on before it happens belinda started a new job they have a full coffee machine so she's no longer buying a coffee every day belinda says i make my own and i finally got around to setting up a five dollar a day amount yes into my raise account she did a ryan john well i said i have

also done that and Belinda said Ryan you are my inspiration oh so cute I baited her to say that I said am I your inspiration she's like yes but five dollars a day is going to her raise account to make up for the coffee she's not buying so great now Tanya recently had and also Tanya describes herself as a long-time lurker first time post I love that I recently had breast reduction surgery and i had some beautiful lingerie pieces that no longer fit which is a bit of a shame she's really happy she's got the surgery but she's like i've got these pieces and they're so expensive lingerie is so much money i had no idea fabric don't you wear them to work like i buy money because it bombs to know about you

jesse was like one minute max well some people come in i look cute i take it off please don't put that in the podcast no it's going in the podcast it's stuck no i also had no idea the price until i read some of the comments because it is wild so comments or started buying it yeah he's like oh i've started reading victoria's secret for the articles though yeah i just needed to find out research um but tanya said i didn't want these to go to waste so i found a buy swap and sell page that does specific like for this area for lingerie and pieces and stuff like that and she got 562 dollars selling all the pieces and she's going to use that money to buy stuff that fits her now yeah that's so fun i mean on the

surface that's really wholesome and really cute but like i'm pretty sure there are people on the internet that would definitely buy your underwear oh yeah for more than that and after you've done the one minute wear like jess could be sitting on a goldmine jess that's why she wears it only for a minute don't wear it too long i've got to sell this later um all right two more ali says that's a good side hustle lovely yes ali says i rented out my second bedroom to my to a nursing student she lives in a small town a nursing student is doing their prac or whatever at the local hospital so she rented out the place she's just bought her first house and was a bit really on the edge of her mortgage repayments every month she said now i've got a renter i'm helping a

student and a lot of people are talking now about how expensive property prices are becoming and sometimes you need to make a sacrifice are you gonna go a few more suburbs out are you gonna have one less bedroom something to keep in mind this is actually what i did when i first bought a house i was like single and not with bridget so that would have been nice hmm oh buying a house while you're single oh right i know you meant having a crack at ryan when he was single oh my i was like are we on yeah i mean god you need to have that lingerie to wear for a minute not a chance what's the rating of this episode wow um but one of my mates actually at least pg guys yeah one of my mates rented the spare room and that's the only way i could afford to buy a

house and that was my way of going oh i can't quite afford it but here's a sacrifice and again when i was single it wasn't really a sacrifice it was great to have some company to be honest but uh great idea ali she's uh so she's getting ahead on her mortgage so nice and finally kate uh she bought a house in december and she recently had a valuation done because she's going to remortgage and refinance their house is now worth two hundred and fifty thousand dollars more than when they bought it six months ago six months six months they bought it in december it's now july what's that six or seven months yep yeah we now have over 50 equity in our house and we're 23 years old could i be more annoyed and jealous and annoyed at you kate oh so jealous but that's so good yeah

All right, Jess, so this week is quite a special week and we have decided to share in lieu of our money win or confessions this week what? We're going to talk about NAIDOC Week, which, if you didn't know, stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee

and the NAIDOC committee is basically tasked with increasing awareness in the wider community for the status and treatment of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander friends. And so this week has a theme every year. They do something different. It's really fun and there's so many great activities. Obviously, we're at the end of the week now.

Hopefully, you guys are able to... It's Friday, but hopefully you've seen it on our platform already and interacted with it and supported it and it won't come as a surprise that we're talking about. Yeah, we popped it up on Monday with the link to the website which had a heap of really great resources for different events that they were throwing and things like that. The theme this year is Healing Country, meaning embracing

the First Nations' cultural knowledge and understanding of country as a part of our national heritage because it is such a rich culture and there's genuinely so much fantastic history and art that it's really great to absorb and it's not necessarily really prevalent in the – Yeah, you just don't see it often enough, I think. And so we popped a thread in on Monday and said, hey like share some of your favorite first nations creators and artists and um i thought

maybe we could just share some of our favorites i popped a couple of mine on the thread definitely go have a look at it it's under our announcements and there's so many great artisans there um if you're looking for something to purchase i also saw like on the news and on the weather and stuff instead of the western names for all the capital cities they were using the traditional names and i thought that was really really cool because you know australia post does that too you can elect to send your post with i just saw that recently it's really cool what are you talking about they've adjusted the uh way you would write your address on anything that you're sending yeah which is super duper cool so now instead of sending it to she's on the money 162 collins

street you would send it to she's on the money warringery country 162 collins street melbourne which i think is such a beautiful way to acknowledge the lands that we are existing on and start to use those names that i think have been really lost over however many many many many centuries yeah literally decades is not long enough and add it into our vocab exactly right and there's a really great um link on the ozpost website to help you find the traditional name place of the country that you are living on or sending to if you need that oh cool i love that so easy to add in as well yeah absolutely i really like that that's actually such a special way of starting to reintroduce things that have arguably been lost and you know i didn't know

about this stuff way back in school i wouldn't have had a clue and now learning about it it It just feels so special to be able to reconnect with stuff like that and actually just respect that culture because you know how much it means to the people that really connect with it. And I feel like I can't say that I have any relations who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, but like I just really feel for them having lost such a significant piece of their culture that I go, no, you deserve that respect. Like, I'd love that.

Like, maybe we should update it on their website and put it there and people can, you know, send their parcels that way. And, you know, it's just a really nice reminder when you get a piece of mail that, you know, this country has a history and it's very special. I was recently in New Zealand. New Zealand? Yeah, and was really surprised to see how much Maori they use, like on all their signs and stuff. Yeah, so my wife, Bridget, is from New Zealand and she was shocked at the opposite way that how little Australia did. Yeah, and she's like, oh, because back home it's like we learned languages at school and it was just really common and in the workplace.

and here she's like, oh, it was like a don't talk about it for decades and it's like finally we're doing the smallest of first steps to try and, I don't know. There's a lot more to do, but I think NAIDOC week and there's a number of other celebrations throughout the year that are super special and really great to get around. But I thought we could go around the table and all share our favourites, either from the thread or I know we all have some businesses

that we personally love to support as well. Tony, do you want to go? Yeah, so I recently started following Worime Collective, which is an aboriginal owned and family operated art body and bath business and um for anyone that knows me i love a bath oh really i have no idea um and my boyfriend and i are about to move into a house with a bath so it's so exciting um so it was a really great uh we'll keep everybody updated on the bath update the bath situation um so it was a great excuse for me to um you know go out and buy bath stuff um and it's all aboriginal owned and they've got some amazing like shower

gels and um and bath bombs and bubble bath and stuff and it's all like traditional scents and it's all handmade and it's really really gorgeous um but i also have a sneaky other one my best friend ayton is an aboriginal woman and she's an artist um and if you have a look at her instagram at dartbreaker underscore you can find her she does some cheeky pictures yeah she does like these like nudie girls and it's it's really really cool but um yeah as an aboriginal woman i love to support her i buy her art a lot so if it's something that you might be into you should have a look pick up a little cheeky piece it's definitely on the theme of this episode speaking about lingerie all right v who's your fave so i've got a couple so the first one both of these

weren't in the thread which i was really surprised about which is why i'm bringing them up the first one is a guy called brad turner and he's an aboriginal artist and i know this is she's on the money but like he's just such a special human and does such beautiful pieces of work that I wanted to share it I've been creeping on his art for a very long time and one day I might be able to afford an original piece like he I guess he would know me like just through Instagram like if you're always liking yeah do you know Victoria Devine like it wouldn't be like oh yeah she's so nice it would be like oh yeah she replies to so many of my stories with love heart eyes like kind of weird but that that's our relationship so I'm assuming he knows who I am you know

hopefully and then the second is actually a friend of mine and that's alira potter so alira is a gosh i follow her on instagram yeah she's so beautiful and i met her at a keep it cleaner event earlier this year and she's a creator a writer and a speaker and just a glowy human like literally a glowy you know those people that you meet and you're like wow i want your energy around energy yeah like she was just a glowy human and alira is an aboriginal woman who spreads so much love across the internet. And I just think everybody should go and follow her because I just feel like I learned so much from even just having her Instagram stories pop up and like she will share other black owned businesses and she will share really beautiful content that educates. And I

think that it's really special because it's not actually her job to educate us. It's nobody's job to educate us except for ourselves. And if you want to learn more about it, great. Go to the NAIDOC website and learn more there's an entire page on history that you can go and learn from but she's so giving with her time and so giving with her energy and her content I just feel like we can learn so much from absorbing it and like as much as nobody owes us anything when it comes to education like reading is one thing but seeing somebody's beautiful interpretation of what that means for her culture and what that means for you know how she interprets it it just it's so nice to see anyway she doesn't have a specific product to sell but i just wanted to share it because

i just feel like it was the right place to do that and also something as simple as following someone on instagram you know if you if you can't afford to to buy from a black owned business you can donate if you don't have the money to do that please just educate yourselves about what you can do and yeah and support like content creators 100 following liking sharing is a big one saving absolutely like that get the algorithm get them out there get them in front of your eyes it's such a great way to support people for free yep all right ash's she also has a really really cute dog so if we haven't convinced you yet she has an incredibly cute dog and like that's worth it in itself i agree yeah all right ash's message through this is her own business it's little

black duck teapots and i've been onto the instagram page and the facebook they're incredible Have you seen the photos in the thread? So, they're Aboriginal art, like, painted over the teapots and stuff, but they're really bright and colourful. They're beautiful. And it just reminds me of something that's going to need to go into my mum's house because my mum has colours everywhere. She loves Aboriginal art.

So, the combination of the two. Oh, they're so stunning. Right? And that's her own business. So, Little Black Duck teapots. Go and check them out. Oh, thanks for reaching out, Ash. That's so fun.

My favourite is, I popped a couple in the thread, But an artist in particular I followed on Instagram for, I reckon, over two years now is Nardurna. And she does. I know. And I didn't say them because I knew that was going to be your special share. I'm so excited because she does beautiful artwork. Her color, it's a really traditional style. And her colors in particular really speak to me personally.

And they're very on brand for She's On The Money with a lot of pinks and warms. And it just, it genuinely makes me feel warm and happy looking at them. and victoria i'm so excited let us order a piece for the office a couple of weeks ago and it should be with us really soon it's gonna be so stunning i cannot wait for everyone to see it it's true it's so excited we're currently having arguments over whose desk it's going to be closest to um yeah but her stuff is really beautiful and there are a number of other artists on that thread and if you can't afford to buy original artworks prints are a really great option that's what we went with and you can get all different custom sizes and it's just a really fun way to spruce

up your space. Agreed. That was really special. I love that. We should do this more. I just feel like there's so many great things in our community that we can share and people doing cool things. And like, even just looking through that thread, like how creative are people? Like this is coming from someone who can't draw stick figures. I'm just like, what do you mean? Like, how are you guys that creative? I know. I even look at you guys because you guys are all creatives and I'm the financial advisor. And I'm like, oh, I wish I was just so much cooler. But, you know, got you guys to stand behind to make me look cool so so far so good so with that i think it is time to head off but as always just before we head off we'd like to acknowledge and pay respect to
