She's on the money.
She's on the money.
Hello and welcome to She's On The Money,
the podcast for millennials who want financial freedom welcome back to another one of our friday
drinks episodes where we get to celebrate the money wins and confessions from our she's on
the money community the she's on the money team are all here and as you can probably tell from
the quality of this audio we're remote once again hello team but as you guys just sound so excited
full of lockdown enthusiasm yeah yay but in true friday drink style like nothing's gonna stop us
from doing this episode tony what happened on monday's money diary so we chatted to a young
woman who is absolutely killing it she never went to uni and she's now making over two hundred
thousand dollars a year as a real estate agent legit um and which was really cool just to show
like there's different ways of, you know, getting into a high paying job. You don't have to have
gone to university. You don't have to have done any higher education. You know, if you just like
work really hard, you can get there, which was a really cool insight. And it was awesome to hear
about how busy she is really. Just also her passion. Like I think the one thing I really
took from that episode was she wasn't just like a hard worker. She had such a vision of her future
and a vision of what she wanted to achieve, which I was like, um, you're amazing because we're like,
oh, how did you know? Cause she was quite intelligent at school, which I think a lot
of people just assume, well, if you've got a good ATAR or you've got a good score, obviously you'll
go to university. And she was like, um, no, my drive was always to earn a killer amount of money
and I made it happen. It was like, oh, that's very cool. So she was like super switched on,
but also knew what she wanted and what she didn't need to achieve that. I just really liked hearing
that and just knowing that while it's the minority like anyone can do it if you really want to do it
all right jess what happened this week on our wednesday deep dive um so this week ung spoke
about something that we get questions on all the time which is seeing a financial advisor when do
you do it how do you find one how much does it cost because i think sometimes people are a little
bit taken aback by how much it actually does cost to see an advisor which is why we talk about all
the different options and platforms that are out there and all of the different things that you can
really expect because seeing an advisor is a very personal experience but I think a lot of people
are also a little bit put off because they feel like it's overwhelming or confronting so you guys
really broke it down so that people can have a little bit of an overview of what they might chat
about if they do see an advisor. Yeah and when you don't need to see an advisor as well I think was
a really important piece on that because so many times people will be like oh my gosh I need
financial advice and you'll be like oh you don't actually like you actually just need to go away
and do your budget like that's what you're asking for help on and if you want help great but a
financial advisor is going to be a very expensive way to get some budgeting help so I really liked
that episode I'm biased because I am a financial advisor but I really liked the clarity we could
provide and in all honesty I kind of wish we'd done that episode like a year ago I just feel like
once we finished recording it I said to Georgia why didn't why don't we do that earlier like that
was so necessary so embarrassing from us but we learn and we grow friends we learn and we grow
i learned how to spell financial advisor with an e which i didn't know before i took this job
impressive did you just think it was like advise or no i thought it was oh yeah there's a lot of
um i guess misconception i guess it doesn't actually matter at all when it comes down to
it but the American way of spelling advisor is with an OR at the end and the Australian way is
ER at the end so I'll always correct content that has OR because like I'm not American but anybody
else wouldn't even blink twice um it's just me being pedantic can confirm my copy has been
corrected previously guys it's as if I'm pedantic and really annoying to work with
you're so welcome all right i think it is time to move on from victoria being pedantic
into ryan's money wins and confessions from the community this week so last week i made the bold
claim that we had the facebook marketplace money win of the year six months early mind you in july
i've said we cannot be beaten it was lauren who made not only a sale of a car on facebook
marketplace but a profit on a car and as we know cars usually decrease in value so we said
who can beat that tell us your best second hand money wins and my lord the people delivered they
really did they always do you never disappoint is this gonna be the best she's on the money
podcast of the year because it's the episode where ryan says he's wrong is that what's gonna go on
i'm wrong all the time and i can take it at least you can best podcast i'm wrong and i'll get to the
The key winner, Barbara, has blown us out of the water from last week.
Oh, okay.
But let's start with Annika.
She said 95% of her wardrobe is thrifted, and people always ask,
oh, where do you get your clothes?
And they're always shocked when I say, oh, they're secondhand.
So during lockdown last year, Annika started a vintage website
because she was basically just cleaning out her wardrobe and thought,
oh, if the stuff's good, I won't just throw it out.
I'll try and sell it.
and she has made $10,000 from selling stuff from her own wardrobe.
From her own wardrobe?
That is insanity.
So she knows the places to go and she goes and picks up the good stuff
and apparently there's a bit of a scene where you're like,
oh, yeah, that place in that suburb, you go on a Tuesday morning,
that's when they get the new stuff.
How do you find that information out?
How do you find when they get their latest drop?
People know when the drops are and they become really good at knowing.
Yeah, but how do I get in on that?
Because, like, I want to go to the Brighton ones.
You have to be in the know.
Yeah, well, you've got to contact Annika.
And then over the years, she's been...
Annika's slide into my DMs.
I'm very interested.
Yeah, she's been accumulating stuff and has made $10,000.
And she said it was just a bit of a hobby,
but now I guess it's a legit side hustle.
It is.
It definitely is.
All right, Holly said that she has just furnished a unit
that she's planning on selling.
She's selling a unit that she's been living in.
And she, instead of spending $2,500
to get it professionally staged that's a lot of money yeah well i think that's normal and
staging standard yeah staging is quite expensive and i'm a sting so and you pay by week as well
so like you'll pay that amount for like an eight week run if you're lucky maybe yes but with staging
it is i guess an investment because it you know it works you get a higher price because people
look at the house it looks lived in you can picture yourself there but holly said you know
what that does feel a bit expensive so she went on to facebook marketplace and spent six hundred
dollars instead of two thousand five hundred to kind of stage it and make it look nice herself
then sold the house then sold all the stuff for the same amount of money she paid for it so
essentially got staging for free and she sold her place well done genius that's epic and six hundred
bucks is honestly like it's still a lot of money but it's next to nothing in comparison
and when she got it all back so yeah like yeah can i give you a sneaky staging real estate tip
yeah we want to hear it um if you are staging on the cheap instead of getting a bed frame and
mattress you just get one of those um bed height air mattresses and dress that you can put a
headboard behind it and with all of the correct like bedding on it you wouldn't even know well
can i also share a story i once jumped on a bed in an open house and it was a wooden box with a
on it and yeah but like of course he did ryan doesn't care for yourself guys i was just about
to say no one sits on it so who would know well i would and i was just like hey i'm gonna go jump
on the bed oh that hurt all right allison got a five dollar pair of doc martens in her size great
condition and broken in five dollars for doc broken in as well tony wears doc martens and
looks so sassy in them tony they're expensive aren't they yeah they are um generally like
anywhere from two to four hundred dollars depending on what type yeah and she got some
for five bucks where do you get five dollar at a second-hand store like at a yeah just
let's go to liz she recently bought her first home congratulations liz well done
she completely furnished the entire house for under one thousand dollars what how well obviously
buying a house you need a deposit you don't have a lot of money left over and she thought hey if i
get the best stuff later that's fine i'm just going to get the basics so i went on to facebook
marketplace got heaps of secondhand stuff she said it's more than fine we feel really great in our
new house and i spent less than one thousand dollars on everything combined which is unbelievable
bargain now we cross to our shoes slash heels reporter victoria divine hello yeah reporting
for judy how much would we pay oh i'm just gonna embarrass myself trying to pronounce this
tony bianco is that how i pronounce the shoes yeah tony bianco okay um i don't know what sort
they were but just ballpark how much could you pay for a pair of those between a hundred and
300 on average i reckon is that right tony and jess yeah depends on like if it's a boot or like
yeah a boot would be more expensive you should have honestly she's far more fashion than i am
okay i would say about 200 okay there you go danielle paid 10 at an op shop
yep wears them everywhere she said and why wouldn't you for 10 bucks and you got a nice
brand like that that's five dollars per shoe tony is that good cost per wear yeah that's
it's not a joke that was legit i was laughing because ryan said and why wouldn't you wear them
every day or with a brand like that he's got no idea but i love the commitment and here i am with
my heels lingo ladies welcome to shoes on the footwear all right now we get shoes on the money
shoes on the money oh ryan you missed an opportunity the shoot investor
you guys don't think i'm funny well i don't usually wear heels so i could be like the
barefoot investor that doesn't work either all right let's go to investor the greatest money
win not just from marketplace but any money win of the entire year oh my god is from barbara
My mate Barb, what a legend.
In 2001, is that 20 years ago?
Barbara bought a car for $5,000.
Hey, guys, Carbra.
The lockdown is getting to me.
Someone send help.
Yeah, you're about to say bravo to this story about a Prado.
It is a year and two.
She bought it for $5,000.
She drove it for nine years.
and last year sold it for $14,000 on Marketplace,
making a $10,000 profit, over $10,000 profit on a car.
Having driven it for nearly 10 years.
Barbara, take the wheel.
Are you serious?
Barbara.
Barbara.
Atlanta.
What?
How do you even do that?
But in saying that, SUVs have gone up insane amounts over COVID.
so she's making hay while the sun really does shine yeah so barbara and i mean if anyone can
top making profit on a car that they've driven for years and years is ludicrous car bra to steal
tony's pun you are the winner of the year what does she win give her a car no she doesn't win
a car stop committing to that we can't afford that kind of budget ryan she can all right well
she can buy her own car money or him all right so we are back without energy which obviously
tony jess and ryan are dwindling on i would say this week but that how offensive yeah sorry but
that is because we're in lockdown again and we've been talking in the team about how hard this
lockdown is mentally and it's funny because we have a new person in our team Catherine who I'm
sure we'll introduce to you guys at some point but Catherine's from Canberra and because Catherine's
from Canberra she's never been through a lockdown so she's like oh that's fine I'll just stay home
and how exciting yeah like it it's funny seeing the difference between the rest of the team who
are slightly traumatized and I would genuinely say have a level of PTSD from it and Tony this
morning we were on zoom and you summarized it perfectly it's not for us day one it's like day
200 and it is really hard and it just feels really overwhelming so i thought i would ask the team
how you're going what's going on because i think that this is something we should talk about more
often because you know it can't just be all sunshine and roses and beautiful peach posts
on instagram like for me this has been really hard and i really don't enjoy it and you know
and very privileged in that I can still work throughout but like it doesn't make it any less
of a mental load for me to be stuck at home and feeling like I'm on a route wheel yeah and like
you said um yeah it's it's cumulative and it just feels like so heavy and for us in Victoria
obviously there's been 200 days or something in the last two years that we've been locked down
um that's a lot of days it's yeah when and when you think about it like that you know it was this
time last year for us that we got locked down for what two three months or whatever it was
and we had no idea what was gonna happen or where it was going it's really difficult and I guess
it's just about keeping it real like you said about how we're all feeling and um for me over
the weekend I've been trying to you know boost up my Instagram and post a bit more and I was like
cool I've got all this time I'm gonna come up with all of these things to make and all of these
reels or TikToks to post and then I sat down and I just was bashing my head against the wall trying
to be creative and i was like you know what i actually just like zapped of my creative juices
sorry we are out we are fresh out over here in tony's house well not being able to leave the
house and change your surrounds is for creative when i'm in a rut and i would say this to anyone
like creatively just go for a walk change the scenery like look at something different that'll
just you know get your juices flowing but when you know it's literally the opposite of that you're
staring at the same blank wall you've been staring at for 200 days straight and you're like oh where
will the spark of inspiration come from well spoiler alert probably not this apartment
yeah surprise surprise but it does all roll into one and i think it's really worthy of note that
it is hard and i know that so many people are struggling financially and i've had so many dms
from people being like hey like i'm about to go into lockdown for the first time i'm in adelaide
or, you know, the people in Sydney, their lockdowns have been getting significantly
harsher over the last couple of weeks. And that's, to me, that feels really cruel in a way,
because they're having it slowly taken off them instead of like, all right, stay home. Like,
we're just going to fix this. It's kind of like, well, what are the rules today? Are they moving?
Are they like, are they different? Like, how long are we going to be here? And I just feel like,
yeah, it's not easy for any of us, but, you know, we're all trying our best. And we,
you know I was talking on Instagram about this earlier this week like whilst some of us might
be financially stable and some of us might you know not be at all and be really stressing like
we're all in the same situation and we're all in this storm and it's all impacting us
significantly regardless of what kind of ship we're sailing but I guess as a team something
that's been really helping us Jess which I think you've been loving is our lockdown Pilates which
we have been doing as a team every single morning yes it's been so fun I yeah my mental health has
not been great this particular lockdown like a lot of people um and I've been finding it really
hard to connect like with the team and even just with my partner I'm really lucky that I do live
with someone but I've been finding it really tricky to kind of get into the day and start
off right and so Victoria I think it was you who suggested we all do a little Pilates session in
the morning so we get on zoom and we do a little keep it clean to work out but yeah it's been so
fun it's literally 20 minutes out of our day and it's so nice that we can do it all together and
feel a little bit connected and for people like me who are having a little bit of a hard time
mentally that small amount of exercise and we do ones that do not require any equipment because i
am not a sporty gal i don't have the weights i don't have the resistance bands i have nothing
so we've been doing the ones with no equipment and it is genuinely they don't lie those endorphins
they do not lie you feel so much better afterwards and it's been really nice for us to just do
something as a team yeah and we're not sponsored by keep it cleaner but we do love steph and laura
but also they do have a youtube channel where they have a couple of workouts that you can do
with them for free and the thing i like about them is that it feels like you're in a class like
they're actually talking to you like a person instead of just like working out and you're
trying to keep up but also i know they have like a one week free trial so that you can give it a
crack and see if you like it and that's a money win like that's a good thing to do and i just
genuinely really like the platform because it's bringing my team together and we've got something
to do and you best believe that every single morning i'm like hey zoom link guys it's pilates
time and you kind of get to go at your own pace because like tony's screen and jess's screen and
my screen they're all teeny tiny so you can't really see what the other person is doing but
you know they're there keeping you accountable and you can just hear each other breathing or
going nah or me being like what push-ups no i said pilates the grunts of support
so in the group chat today uh was it deliberate that when someone said is it time for pilates
it was instead written it's time for pies and lattes was that a deliberate joke or was that
just what you guys were doing no we're actually just eating and drinking coffee on zoom yeah
That's actually what we do.
And you could have joined.
I haven't seen you sign in.
Well, you guys start it when my shift on radio starts.
Well, that's a you problem.
The exact same minute.
It's a you problem.
You can multitask, right?
Yeah, you could do radio Pilates.
Could you just imagine doing Pilates whilst on the radio?
Like, and here's Justin Bieber.
That does not sound like Pilates.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong.
I've got a lockdown win.
Yeah, what is that?
So obviously a bit more time at home and we just sort of did that.
Oh, were they meaning to clean out that spare cupboard for ages?
Let's just, you know,
those kinds of jobs that you can just end up putting off for years.
My wardrobe is clean for that reason.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I actually found this bag full of coins.
Money.
A bag full of money.
Ryan, John.
Imagine having a bag full of money that you didn't know you had.
and then and then literally broadcasting that on a national money podcast and expecting people to
not think you're a drug dealer no it wasn't like wads of notes it was more like you know five cent
coins yeah like where you put the coins and i used to just like keep them in a bowl by my desk at the
end of the day and i must have just tipped it into this bag when we moved house and then i found it
and i did find some like american notes and stuff and i reckon that's about 50 or 60 bucks
so i mean if anyone ever used coins ever again i'm gonna have a win there but having said that
i can't even remember the last time i used like a physical currency so um yeah that's a win that's
a win and i've actually done that before and i thought that finding it would be really hard to
deal with because i don't use coins anymore but most big bank branches now have the coin sorters
and you can kind of just go and tip all the coins in and then it tells you how much is there and
they say do you want to just put directly into your bank account and you're like yeah
that's awesome yeah so google like the coin sorter because i know they're not at every single branch
but you literally can tip the money into a coin sorter and then it'll be like oh that's 112 20
ryan john how do you want that converted and you'll be like put it in my bank account and
then it's in your bank account hey it's so satisfying remember when we were in um like
say primary school and there was like guess how many jelly beans in the jar yeah do you reckon
if i take a photo of the just wad of coins whoever in the she's on the money group guesses
the closest gets the money oh my gosh yes that is the funnest thing i've ever heard it's like
jelly beans but better and a lockdown activity everybody can participate all right well by the
time she's on the money has all of their shrapnel and they are willing to gift it to you by the way
just a disclaimer this i will not be paying postage because i was just happy we'll send a
bank transfer but yeah we'll make ryan go to the bank and film himself putting it through the coin
sorter and then by the time this goes out by the time this podcast goes out friday morning there
will be a photo in the facebook group where you can see the coins so that'll be in the facebook
group uh speaking of wins jess win or confession in lockdown this week win car park win off the
back of my car park lost last night um jess you've got to get a life literally like my life is
driving in and out of this car park no yeah that's exactly what it is it's that i'm not driving to
work because we're working remotely so i'm saving myself like 75 on parking that's so much money
it's so much money and normally i do catch the train but with covid i've just been trying to
reduce the opportunities for myself to come into contact needlessly and i'm in a very privileged
position where i can afford to drive to work and i obviously have a car and stuff so i'm very
fortunate um but like the money and the cost of parking and i'm really lucky that i can afford
to come in um but like that 75 i can tell you that's a money win that's very good tony how
about you how'd you go um i've got a confession um so being in lockdown obviously is uh played
on the emotions a little bit and my boyfriend torbs and i have been like oh yeah let's order
something naughty let's order some naughty food let's you know uh indulge in uber eats and we've
actually so actually this might be a future money win we've actually deleted all of the uber eats
and deliveroo apps off of our phones so that we how did you do that in lockdown honestly we were
just ordering so much food and i was like this is getting ridiculous it's costing a fortune we're
ordering really naughty food so we're eating like not very well and it doesn't make you feel better
you think that eating like crappy food's gonna make you feel so good and like indulgent but it
just makes you feel awful the next day so um we've deleted them all i don't know how long it's gonna
last but hopefully it's a future money win that we're no longer ordering food on uber eats do you
think it'll last longer than the time ryan said he won't have takeaway coffees that long that's a
challenge that's a great challenge you know what i'm gonna last longer than ryan did that is
aggressive and that is the last time i hear stories on a podcast about how long i last thank
you very much sorry not sorry let's move on to me um so victoria so i actually have a confession
and it's oh it's actually a bad confession it's like not thousands of dollars or anything it's
just like the pinnacle of lazy lockdown life right so everybody knows i'm slightly addicted
to the mochis that you get at cole's on a good day they are seven dollars a box if they go on sale
you get them for four dollars a box i'm obsessed they are coconut milk the coconut milk chocolate
ones are the ones that i die for how many in a box six so it's like not exactly a great investment
but like i love them they make my diet trees they are delicious so you've got to let them
defrost a little bit because then they are peak performing amazing anyway the other night
in lockdown we just announced lockdown so i was a bit frustrated i'd had two glasses of wine
realized there weren't any mochis in my freezer couldn't drive because two glasses of wine and
also during lockdown that would be a bit irresponsible we've only been going to the
grocery store once a week very very questionable i paid for uber eats to bring me one box of
chocolate mochis and it must be nice so expensive and i just in the moment i was like i don't even
care this is what i want i'm gonna look after myself and it was like close to 20 and i literally
regret it like it's obviously not gonna cripple me it's not like i'm in crippling debt but like
what a bad money decision from me that just highlights the fact that i have literally no
self-control how were they though so good and do you know why they were good guys because they came
from a random 7-eleven like four suburbs across and so in the time it came from there to my house
they're defrosted the perfect amount that's very good now i mean you bring it to the the table and
say it's a confession but victoria divine do you regret your decision at all yeah kind of kind of
because i knew i'd have to tell you i knew i'd have to tell you but i enjoyed all of the mochis
the only thing i regretted was not buying two boxes because that transport fee was really
expensive cost per delivery yeah and when they arrived steve wanted to share them and i was like
I didn't sign up for this.
Oh, I hate that.
Yeah, and so I...
Everybody eats your own box, Steve.
God.
Exactly.
And so I ended up, instead of being able to be a garbage guts
and have all six mochis, I got three,
which is probably what I deserved, given I paid for them on Uber Eats.
All right, and I think that's probably enough from me, guys.
But just before we head off, we'd like to acknowledge
