Starting point is 00:00:00 She's on the money. She's on the money. Hello and welcome to She's on the Money's Friday Drinks, the podcast for millennials who want to wind down after a long week of learning about finance. Today on this show, we are going to be jumping straight into talking about money wins the community and some sweet sweet cash money this week though i am joined by georgia king hello our favorite friend who helps us every single wednesday bring our pod to life and jessica who happens to be our absolute content wizard here at she's on the money jessica welcome back for another episode hello friends so last week georgia i introduced you guys to one of my true loves from when i was 16 not that i would
Starting point is 00:00:59 have drunk them at 16 for those of you playing along at home the guava cruiser and uh how did we write that we walked away from that feeling how oh like a solid 10 yeah i felt young again i felt 16 ready to go uh tori's 16th that was a big night for me on the cruises anyway that's a real flashback but i loved them and you were right guava really was the best flavor it is the supreme flavor i do believe i feel like everyone's like fast free i'm like no no friend you have not lived guava's where it's at but this week georgia you've got a flashback for us i do okay what have you introduced us to today i haven't i haven't tried it yet i've i've drunk them before but this will be the first time in more than 10 years so what we're drinking tonight my friends is the old
Starting point is 00:01:47 lemon rusky so the classic stolly drink tastes like solo but a bit of fun and that tastes like solo that's a really good way of explaining it that's the best it's the only way and you've never had one have you jess no i'm very excited last week was also my first guava cruiser so i feel like the pot is really just opening up my eyes to a whole new world of beverages responsible drinking as always friends but uh my mum loves ruskies as well shout out i feel like it's a mum drink i feel like my mum used to drink ruskies as well but you know what i'm really liking about this bottle it says imported rush it says imported vodka but then in brackets it says not russian don't it's not russian stuff why did you have to stipulate that like what about this
Starting point is 00:02:32 makes anybody think that it was going to be russian because vodka is obviously always russian and maybe a rusky i don't know maybe maybe it used to be maybe it used to be i don't know but let's move on. This has been a really fun time. I'm going to continue to drink my drink, but you know what? We're going to start this week off with money wins. Georgia, you get to kick us off. We have each and every single week now a thread in our Facebook group of people's money wins. And every single week we go through and pick out our favorites. What was yours this week? Okay. So mine is from the lovely Kelsey who's written after years of manually transferring my dollary dues to their allocated accounts after each payday i finally have automated this process this is
Starting point is 00:03:14 already tapped into my relationship with money i've been less tempted to dip into other accounts i have hidden most accounts which has minimized the temptation to dip and she says she used to spend so much money on food and now she's way more mindful of what she's eating and what she's spending and i think that is brilliant i also think that's brilliant do you see a lot of people doing this is this like a tried and true way of managing your money on a daily basis everything works for different people but I think that's a great way of doing it and to be honest that's what I love about our community you get so many different options and so many different views from different people and even if it doesn't work for you that's cool you just learn a different way
Starting point is 00:03:49 of doing something that might work for a friend or a family member or even future you maybe it's also kind of pervy I feel like everyone always enjoys listening to how other people manage their everyday spending right yes you know how people do on Instagram day in the life videos like they're like oh today i'm gonna do a day in the life vlog content creator jumping in here do we want a day in the life of victoria divine in the office please let us know i will counter offer that and say a day in the life of lucy the golden sheep doodle um mainly it's sleeping under desks and then going to the park at lunchtime 10 out of 10 life but that's not what i'm talking about imagine if you got to do on the she's on the money instagram stories a day in the life like
Starting point is 00:04:30 spending edition and you have like takeovers and stuff of different people like and people would record stories for us and then we could share them of them being like this is what i've been spending today here's my tracker i don't know that's a wild idea but that could be so fun and so pervy well it's like an intense version of a money diary it's just like a smaller version i guess like people love our money diaries and i feel like that is actually a brilliant i love our money diaries that's why i bring them to you every single week i'm obsessed anyway on your kelsey uh thank you for sharing your money win and sorry for saying on ya now i think it's jessica's turn to share a money win from the group what have you got jess uh mine is from our friend milana
Starting point is 00:05:12 which firstly gorgeous name but she got a merino wool coat for winter originally 1400 down to 320 which means she saved over a grand which is massive especially for merino like i'm a bit of a fabric snob um i'm all about you know a little bit more money a little bit nicer quality um and i think that's huge a merino coat for 320 like that's a hot deal that's a hot deal that's still a really bloody expensive coat bye i feel like 300 is what i would spend for like a nice coat i yeah like i feel like i have coats that i bought literally a decade ago so i think like If you think about your cost per wear, it's a little bit more reasonable. Yes, it's a big outlay, but I mean, girl, get that sale.
Starting point is 00:05:56 I'm all about it. I'm an enabler, though, as Victoria knows. I don't think I want to weigh in on this because as much as I just said that the coat was really expensive, I'm a fiend for shoes and they have less practical application than a coat. So, yeah, let's move on. I love that, though, and it looks gorgeous. You've just shown us a photo of it.
Starting point is 00:06:14 10 out of 10, I'd wear that. Oh, that is chic. Yeah, very nice. Very Melbourne-ish. For those of you wondering if I have a favourite, which you're not, but I'm going to share anyway, I do. And it is from our friend Priscilla. And Priscilla says, and you guys are going to know instantly
Starting point is 00:06:29 why I've chosen this one. She says, oat milk queen. Oh, there you go. See, we started off on the best of feet. She said, I went to cancel my vegan goodness me box subscription to save money, but realised I've been racking up points for the past year or so. Managed to get a case of six minor figures oat milks for free.
Starting point is 00:06:47 she says she is pretty happy about that and i would be too my friend that's good and we all know i stan minor figures like i am obsessed with them it has absolutely nothing like they've never even sponsored us i don't need to be sponsored no talk about them every i'm gonna stop talking about them i love you i was just gonna say we get dms about minor figures now i love that oat milk is so on brand for us that the community when they see it on sale or um someone saw a really cool like refillable minor figures machine like you take like sustainable you take your your little milk bottle and minor figures will refill it for you and they dm'd us a photo and I was like that's that's outstanding I can't even I want to I'm gonna look that up later I am obviously
Starting point is 00:07:33 obsessed with them but like can oat milk become a part of my personality I think it already is but maybe you could look into getting like a milk tap for the office and oat milk minor figures let's look into it it's kind of just get in touch won't we do you know what you know what i'm gonna do i'm just gonna get you a bar fridge and put a sticker of minor figures on the front how about that that'll do that's a good settlement compromise you're not getting a milk tap all right well we never promised we would have our stuff together on the friday episodes but you know what we do promise we do promise some level of structure and given that we have that structure we are actually going to start talking about our money wins or confessions from this week which is arguably one
Starting point is 00:08:12 of my favourite parts of the week because it makes me feel a little bit better about my spending habits most of the time. So let's just throw Jess straight under the bus. Jess, what is yours this week? Mine is a bit of a team money win this week. We have, you may have seen on the IG stories if you've been tuning in, redecorating the office a little bit, just kind of sprucing things up and obviously the plants we all we love a plant we really do quite close to our office I would say within like very reasonable proximity there is a beautiful wall of devil's ivy like the ivy has grown to be like a literal room divider stun so what we did was um are you literally going to throw us under the table for borrowing no no no we may have walked past and liberated
Starting point is 00:09:06 a few pieces of this plant and brought them home to the office and pop them in some water to propagate and then georgia learned about propagation this week too don't throw me under the bus guy it was a learning experience for everyone and then you came and we showed you and then we went back to the plant wall and we collected some for george took them home on the trend um no but money win free plants and then you can just they're not free Jess they are not free plants you stole those plants I much prefer the term liberated it wasn't from like the botanical gardens or anything like that so don't at Jess um no it was all above like it was all very above board and we did take small clippings of it so
Starting point is 00:09:56 that we could propagate and grow and you know maybe enhance our space a little bit in a very frugal way frugal queens I would say but thanks Jess for joining the team and letting everybody know that we're thieves Georgia have you got something to back that up or are you also going to talk about stealing something mine is so boring but it doesn't involve theft which I think we can all agrees great um so I'm back at the office actually I have not stopped working for a long time what was me anyway point is um I've been buying lunch a hell of a lot because I haven't had time to go to the supermarket I mean boohoo I probably have had time I just this is she had I know that you have been doing this this could have been your money loss and you chose to say
Starting point is 00:10:43 that we were thieves it adds up though doesn't it Jess and it's one of the things that we talk about on the podcast all the time is like pack your lunch don't buy coffee it's like my go-to it's the only advice I have and I've just butted against it what were you gonna say Jessa oh I was just gonna say do as we say not as we do oh well that's it I mean yeah and buying your lunch is delicious but not so delicious on your wallet anyway what a boring money confession from George Victoria money wins or confessions take it away okay so this week if you follow me on Instagram you'd actually already know this money loss um and it has everything to do with being my own fault so this week i left half a block of chocolate um really good chocolate dark chocolate the
Starting point is 00:11:25 expensive kind of dark chocolate that you really try to stretch because you don't want to buy another block of it but you really enjoy it i left it on the couch um and this could go badly if you sat on it or something it melted but it got worse because my dog my new dog lucy puppy really small found it on the couch and she consumed the entire block and there's there's two parts to this she's absolutely fine guys got her to the vet in time and we got her stomach pumped which was really fun but I walked out of there with a $350 bill or $335 to be more exact I'm sorry and also my couch needs a professional steam clean because turns out a puppy is not that clean at eating and she's rubbed it into my couch so yeah that's and you probably lost an
Starting point is 00:12:13 eight dollar block of chocolate don't forget that as well at least an eight dollar block of chocolate i don't know what it's worth but to be honest i adore dark chocolate but i do try to limit myself but lucy's stopped me having it all together she's worth it though she's definitely worth it she's been a very good lady in the office this week she greets everybody she's the chief engagement officer CEO for short and uh yeah all our clients love her given the topic of this week's episode I thought it would be a little bit of fun while having our Ruskies to talk about sweet sweet cash money now I know Jess you and I were talking before about some fun questions related to cash and the first one I've actually got for
Starting point is 00:13:04 you guys and maybe if you're listening you can think about when the last time you did this was was when was the last time you spent enough money for you to feel slightly ill with it leaving your account oh if it's more than $20 like quite often I'll be like do I need it I think truthfully the last time I spent a significant amount of money was when I paid off my credit card which was a while ago now but that was several thousand dollars more than I would care to admit it was I had that initial feeling of just like oh my god like that's so much money that just left my account that I'm never gonna see again but it was immediately followed by like just complete relief I actually adore that and I know that you would have felt a little bit sick but something that
Starting point is 00:13:48 I'm going to point out there if you're in credit card debt and you have savings like my friend you don't actually have savings. You just have an amount of money sitting to the side that could make you completely debt-free that you're choosing not to use that for. Now, I've always said that having an emergency account is really, really important even if you have debt. Don't use that to extinguish your credit card debt but if you are trying to save while having credit card debt or personal loan or any other form of, you know, bad debt as we classify it here at She's On The Money, like you need to get rid of that before you start saving because if you're saving at the same time as having personal debt. It's actually working against you because you're paying interest
Starting point is 00:14:25 on your credit card at probably an exorbitant amount between like 17 and 22 percent or whatever your credit card is. So that's technically how much money your savings is losing you by having savings. Like if you had an investment portfolio that was consistently losing like let's call it 19 percent like you would change it ASAP and so we should really start seeing saving while being in debt that way i think um we get that question in our group so so often is people saying i have you know ten thousand dollars set aside and i want to buy a new car but i also have a credit card debt or a personal loan so i feel like you've just answered all of those questions we usually get and just to clarify you're saying if you have debt that should be your priority
Starting point is 00:15:07 right a hundred percent debt is always your priority and that's something that really needs to be prioritized and i think it i think it's really hard because you've got these goals and you've got these things in mind that you really want to achieve right like you want to save for home and you just have come into a bigger salary so you're putting all of your money into an account so that you can save your first home but you've got a ten thousand or eleven thousand dollar credit card or personal debt so you're just pretending it's not there while feeling like you're achieving something else it's actually going to put you further behind and you're not going to get as far forward what we should be doing is using that debt to teach ourselves that we actually can create
Starting point is 00:15:46 really good savings habit so maybe not seeing that as oh my gosh i lost all of that money we didn't you already spent it you're just paying it back but what you should be doing is going oh my gosh if i could pay off ten thousand dollars worth of credit card debt i sure can save ten thousand dollars in that same period of time so try and prove that to yourself instead dave that was good that was not just your average little chat was it when friday drinks with victoria goes off friends I'm the cool kid usually like on a Friday night with me yeah welcome welcome Georgia when was the last time you spent enough money that it made your eyes kind of water um look I am similar to Jess here spending more than $20 at a time makes me throw up a little in my mouth
Starting point is 00:16:33 so I think probably more than $20 that surprises me from both of you I'm not gonna lie I'm not a frivolous spender i think about everything i purchased to the point where no you are literally one of the savviest savers i know actually and obviously you wouldn't share on the pod what you've got in your savings but uh she's pretty good at saving friends yeah but i would say probably most recently would have been the purchases that i made for the apartment that i'm now living in so i had to buy a washing machine and a fridge so things like that boring but you need them yeah so just those i guess 100 do you have any savvy savings tips on those items or did you just just marketplace yeah nice yeah complete side note I'm 100%
Starting point is 00:17:16 convinced that I can manifest anything that I want onto Facebook marketplace it happened to me five or six times where I've seen something like quite expensive and pretty specific and I've managed within I would say like two months or so to find it on Facebook marketplace for at least half of the retail price so back for another episode next week with life coaching from Jessica richie okay so finally fee you're the only one that hasn't answered this question and you have had quite a few that is true that is true i actually feel a little bit embarrassed now about mine because you guys are saying that you're so worried about 20 leaving your account and mine was the house deposit that left my account and what did that feel like oh it felt
Starting point is 00:18:02 like i got kicked in the guts really yeah absolutely it was it wasn't that it was leaving I was very glad that I was finally achieving this goal and I really saw that transfer as like, you know, the seal on signing a contract, I suppose. But it was the waiting period between me transferring it and getting a receipt from the real estate agent to say I've transferred it. Saying, oh my gosh, where's my money gone? Like that was a lot of money and now it's gone. Or maybe it's because I'm just genuinely not used to having that larger sums of money. But you actually have to head down to the bank to get that transferred. so it felt a little bit more legitimate but knowing some people had gotten caught up in
Starting point is 00:18:41 scams historically transferring large amounts of money and it being lost like I didn't sleep well that night I'm not gonna lie how long did it take oh it took 24 hours so it's really quick from bank to bank and I got the confirmation that it was there but when you transfer your home deposit you'll get the receipt that you know it was transferred from the bank and they'll say yep we've done our job we in their account in 24 hours and you go great no problems but you also get like a written up receipt from the real estate agent to say, yes, we've confirmed this and it is here. And they kind of hold it in limbo before the actual owners of the house get it. So it goes to the real estate agent, not the other owners, just for those of you who don't understand
Starting point is 00:19:20 that process. Because to be honest, there was a lot that I needed to learn about property when going through that. How are you feeling about that now? Oh my gosh, I'm so proud. Yeah. I'm so proud. We achieved this epic goal and we achieved something that I arguably didn't think would happen as fast as it did so I'm not mad about it but I'm not gonna lie every time I log into my bank and I'm like oh oh yeah that's that that's not what that used to look like and yeah I had the privilege of saving up with a partner as well so it always looked like it compounded much faster than what I was contributing to it so that was super motivating and now we're not doing that it's going into a mortgage and an offset and like that's okay but I don't have
Starting point is 00:20:02 the same visibility over that as I did in my personal bank account when we just had a joint account. Going on from that, actually, I saw a post in the Facebook group the other day that gave me a little bit of a giggle as someone who used to work in real estate. And I'm really sorry, I can't remember your name, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who may have had the same train of thought. And she was basically just asking how people felt carrying the cash for their house deposits when they went to pay. So I think she was under the impression that people were taking their you know 60 to 70 000 deposit to the auction to put on the table like when you buy a house in cash that's not what they mean they don't actually make cash and i money that's in
Starting point is 00:20:42 your bank account that pays for it like if you're saying oh they bought the house in cash they don't just turn up with a briefcase of money and that's not a thing that's exactly the image i got was like some shady person like opening up their coat and just having a big suitcase full of money but it got me thinking like what's the most cash you've ever seen in person physical physical cash like yeah holding it in your hands at any one time well throwing daddy-o under the bus oh my gosh green boys in the wallet from time to time oh you must be like rich rich nah i think he had like two when i was i was like dad you got any money you don't want or that you're done with and he was like george go away um so yeah it was worth a crack it was definitely worth a crack
Starting point is 00:21:26 you've got to shoot your shot if you don't get your shot that is okay but at least you tried how about you be i don't think i've ever held do you know what actually i have a story way back when i just started my grad role and i bought a new car and this is the thing that put me in personal debt in the first place for those of you playing along on my life story um but i went and purchased a car it was a secondhand car at the time it is the car i still drive friends which happens to be a 2006 model so very recent very updated very chic I still love her dearly you guys know that pride and joy but the person I bought it off was out in Broadmeadows and they wanted to sell it in cash and now that's not a bad thing but like does that mean it was
Starting point is 00:22:15 stolen no it's not a bad thing but it did feel slightly weird them being like no no it has to be in cash and then my dad was like we really should look into these we like looked up the VIN number and stuff and it was it was actually legit they did own it it was fine there was no loan on the car or anything like that so yeah that that was probably then I had a hot $14,500 in a cash in my hot little mitts were you not afraid that it was a setup I would have been so scared that I was gonna get mugged I can't even remember the full story if I'm being honest I just remember that was probably the only time I've held a lot of money in my hands and do you know what I was so disappointed seeing it in person it looked like nothing like I thought
Starting point is 00:23:01 we were gonna go down to the bank and get this cash out and it would be this massive wad and I'd have to like hold it up or something but actually it was just like this small pile of cash and I was like oh couldn't you have given it to me in like fives now given that story was so lackluster that was good it was lackluster let's be honest I reckon given Georgia King as always has finished her rusky before everybody else um it is time to wrap the show which is actually how we manage shows nowadays it is the time in which it takes Georgia to consume the drink which we have picked that week about 20 minutes exactly if you guys have any suggestions for next week's drink we are absolutely open to it post it in the group send us a message we need to know
Starting point is 00:23:46 is there a throwback drink we should be consuming because we want to hear about it i'm going to pitch wicked drinks if those of you playing along at home remember those energy drinks they're blue they're energy drinks i'm not talking about i'm way older on this side of the table remember that you're way older than us wow okay well it is time to wrap the show it is time to the wrap the show But just before we head off, we'd like to acknowledge and pay respects to Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the traditional custodians of the lands, the waterways and the skies all across Australia. We thank you for sharing and for caring on the land which we are able to learn. We pay our respects to elders past and present and we share our friendship and our kindness. And remember that the advice shared on She's on the Money is general in nature and does not consider your individual circumstances.
Starting point is 00:24:35 She's on the money exists purely for educational purposes and should not be relied upon to make an investment or a financial decision. And we promise Vikos Devine is an... Vikos. Vikos, Vicky D. I mean, it's arguably higher in rank than Vicky D. Do you like Vikos?
Starting point is 00:24:53 Are you calling me Vikos? Are you calling me Vikos because you call my cat Henos? I think it's a thing I've started doing. I just had Os to everyone's name, like Jess before. I was like, Jess Os. Bec, producer Bec, Becos. Rhinos wouldn't work. It sounds like a dinosaur.
Starting point is 00:25:10 Carry on with your disclaimer. Anyway, Victoria Devine is an authorised representative of Australia Pacific Funds Management, Propriety Limited, ABN 34132463257, AFSL 339151. And a big thank you, of course, to Brian and Bec, our producer, for putting it all together. And also, hot shout out to Jess for reminding me that I couldn't go home early and needed to stay back to record this podcast.
