Starting point is 00:00:00 She's on the money. She's on the money. Hello and welcome to She's on the money, the podcast for millennials who want financial freedom. Today's money diarist is called 27 and not conforming V. You've got the email there. I don't want to buy a house or get married or have kids or anything they told us to want as a woman approaching 30 same girl I am also approaching 30 very quickly maybe one day I'll want those things they sound lovely but I've always felt a little different to everybody else my savings goals were and still are towards a life of travel and adventure not a house deposit
Starting point is 00:00:48 I live in a world where the normal thing to do is throw thousands of dollars at a house that you're locked into paying for over at least the next 20 years. I've worked in hospitality ever since I was 15, I've tried uni courses, I've tried regular sales jobs, I've tried to be normal in quotation marks but it doesn't seem to last. I'm a creative, I'm an aspiring photographer and I'm perfectly happy pouring beers for $26 to $36 an hour and learning to become financially literate after years of living paycheck to paycheck. Over 2020 I reassessed my goals and values to be really more responsible with money and true to myself with travel as a goal in mind i've really turned around my bank accounts and flippancy towards money now i have a greater
Starting point is 00:01:32 understanding of how to make my money work for me and understanding my limits instead of the constant stress of falling behind everybody else how cool is that real cool i love that all right 27 and not conforming welcome to she's on the money hello does that sound about right have we um when you hear that back that's her email she wrote that hits an L on the head I reckon all right well we've got our questions that we always go to so we'll quickly go through those and then we have lots more questions but I feel like a lot of people will be nodding along being like I feel that I feel that and I just think it's about time we had a money diarist that wasn't saving for a house deposit whilst it is definitely something that lots of people in our community
Starting point is 00:02:16 you want I also just really want to know about your travel goals and where you want to do but I'll ask the questions first all right okay okay first question first what is your attitude towards money and how has it changed recently oh it was a little bit too flippant um I was very privileged to grow up not really having to worry about money but now obviously as I've like lived in a share house for the last few years and obviously being you know much more of an adult um I'm much more stingy to be honest I really understand the value of money and what things can get you and you know the value of buying $200 boots compared to a $10 piece of crap that's just gonna fall apart every season you know really understood the value of money over everything else I really love
Starting point is 00:03:02 that and you mentioned it in your email but what do you do for work and how much do you earn I'm a bartender I work at a craft brewery she's a fancy bartender right um yeah and i get uh basically 26 an hour um it's like award rates so it like changes if you're on nights and stuff um and you get more for weekends public holidays and stuff so i just got a really nice paycheck having worked the easter weekend i was just about to say a big long juicy long weekend thank you very much thank you time and a half yes how do you feel about investing do you currently invest i do and it's all your fault yes i love when people blame me for stuff so i had no idea probably still have no idea about investing in the stock market and all that
Starting point is 00:03:49 sort of stuff it's all still gibberish to me numbers make no sense to my brain but uh after all like the investment episodes and raising spaceship and stuff that you guys talk about i ended up just like opening a raise account because i'm like what's the harm it's like only a small amount of money and yeah now i have a pretty decent amount in there that i wouldn't have had had I not have just like opened it so yeah oh how cool I love that people blaming me for their investment journeys I'll take all the blame thank you guys my next question is do you currently have any debts and if you do what are they and I'd also like to know how you feel about debt in general I have a hex debt and no like degree to make it worth it yeah so I have about
Starting point is 00:04:35 like i think it's probably like 13 or 15 thousand dollars i think last i looked arguably not the worst hex debt but still frustrating but it's literally just like an amount that i have to pay back for something that i never finished which sounds really like just bad but like i went to uni straight out of school because like that's what you had to do right and i didn't want to continue it and now i just have a hex from like a couple of units that i you know just failed on essentially oh but that's okay i feel like that's actually a really relatable thing to have right like so many people are in that exact situation my wife bridget is one not even subject one report short of her degree and just never handed in that one report so much what are you doing ridge
Starting point is 00:05:24 well she already had a job and she's like it didn't matter i'm like yeah but would you just do it and then you've got it it irks me 10 years on since she hasn't handed that thing in wait so she could go hand it in and get it well a few years later she like followed up and they're like yeah as long as you do your assessment and pass it in like and she's then started and then didn't finish it oh gosh kind of love that for her anyway let's get back to our money dyrus sorry bridge just a short intermission about just throwing under a quick bus yeah quick bus now we back on the road what is your best money habit oh I'm not very well behaved I don't really I don't shop like I op shop and I have to really love it to buy it you know like to the point of there were
Starting point is 00:06:08 these pair of boots that I wanted like oh months ago and I kept looking at them and I kept getting like um my ads and everything on my side of Facebook and everything about these boots it took me months and then I finally bought them so I'll sit on something for a very long time you definitely put more than 24 hours between you and your spending good on that what is your worst money habit food i love food really and i love like going out like i'm hospitality for on through so like i will there's a beautiful cafe down the road and i spend way too much money there um you take your money from hospitality you give your money to hospitality and that is the circle of hospital life exactly i love that though because good
Starting point is 00:06:50 food it just makes you happy like food is life anyway what is your big money goal that you're currently working towards just life i guess i've always saved um when i was younger it was always like saving for like my euro trips and stuff that makes me sound like really bougie but i literally like saved up to go on a big euro trip when i was like 21 and it was amazing um questions yeah like just always like have a chunk of money put away like i can do something if i want to sort of thing yeah that is cool that is really cool yeah so when it comes to giving yourself a grade what would you give yourself as a grade if I forced you to give yourself one maybe considering where I was maybe like a c minus oh yeah oh yeah not bad look I don't think it's that bad but I
Starting point is 00:07:43 feel like you kind of have a lot of your goals and values in line and you genuinely know what you want which makes me think that you're probably a little bit better off at that than you're giving yourself credit for my friend thank you how would you describe the contrast between where you were a few years ago to where you are now massive i was very much living paycheck to paycheck i was like freaking out about trying to make my rent and everything i had like no money to like play with um and now you know i've got like a raised investing account i've got you know a large chunk of money put away I am contributing to my super every week I yeah I'm a lot more switched on and how does that make you feel like do you feel two inches
Starting point is 00:08:29 taller and your shoulders are a bit broader and you you know like you can I feel like I can hear it in your voice yeah it's it's nice I I'm not like drowning I'm not like lost I I know what i'm doing kind of and then she gave herself a c minus what are you doing my friend c minus or b minus didn't you say oh bridget b for bridget i heard c and i was just like wow that's so harsh like that's a bit rough like i i thought you were so much better than that but b minus that's pretty good got some room to grow but if my kids or my future kids came home with that i'd be like yeah it's pretty good pretty good not bad all right so we have so many questions for you but we will get to those in a very quick second. I love your money diary because I just feel like it's a little bit
Starting point is 00:09:21 more relatable to a lot of the people in our community that have been saying things like, oh, like I actually don't want a house, like I just want to travel. How did you decide that that wasn't a priority for you given society's pressures that really feel like they do weigh down on you? I think it probably has a lot to do with my upbringing um I remember as a kid you know getting my hands on my dad's passport and it was every page was filled it was stamped everywhere um we traveled a lot for work and stuff like that and always had a lot of stories and you know I just always wanted to travel like it sounded amazing and it looked amazing um um and i guess like from a family point of view like we didn't have to well at least in my later
Starting point is 00:10:09 teen years i feel like we didn't have to worry about money and stuff like we had a house and it was an house and it was just like it was it wasn't a thing that i felt like i needed to aspire to because it's just a thing that was there you know what i mean can i throw a curveball and i feel like i'm in a similar boat to you uh in terms of like there's a lot of stuff that like oh you're supposed to want this and i'm like nah i don't care uh do you think we don't care about it because we haven't had to care about it because we had it yeah i think definitely um i was in a relationship with a guy that um he his family had very little um and he they rented forever and all he ever wanted was to just buy a house and have that stability and have the security and i i was
Starting point is 00:10:56 kind of another boat of being incredibly fortunate and lucky to I guess not have to feel like that I guess which is yeah it's a bit weird but it's a bit great but it's it's a funny one it's a really nice position of privilege and it's kind of nice that we can talk about it in that way that it's just a part of our money stories essentially it's part of our journey and our money stories really do shape the thoughts the values the beliefs what we actually want when it comes to money so it makes a lot of sense that these types of things and i'm not trying to stereotype it but these types of things are the things that millennials now want because you know our boomer parents that was the dream for them own the house you know bring up the kids do all of that and we now have had that
Starting point is 00:11:40 experience well yeah cool like see what that's like it's you know travel sounds a little bit more interesting yeah i don't really know if the three of us can answer this question okay well you should definitely ask it on the podcast the society says we should do this this this this it's like who is society and are they actually saying that they're not saying that society is or we decide are we in our minds just assuming like you know are we deciding that that's what society wants you know what i mean because i'm guessing no one's knocking at your door and saying what are you doing with your life but i think it's what the majority of people when we say society we mean the majority of people that we experience in our everyday lives they want houses
Starting point is 00:12:22 they want you know a car they want stability they do really want to get married and kind of do all of those things that we might deem traditional in a sense so i think it's not really like society it's just majority of people still want that and that's not a bad thing right like that's not a hey i can't believe they still want the traditional but i think it's worthy of celebration when people We're like, oh, yeah, I don't really want that. Sick. Tell me about it. What are your goals?
Starting point is 00:12:48 Why are they different to mine? But, like, so beautiful that we can have this conversation and it is so different. What's your thoughts, Money Diarist? Is it sometimes just that annoying question at a family gathering that you have to kind of go and explain yourself? Yeah, what's that like? I honestly, I blame Instagram.
Starting point is 00:13:05 I actually had to, I deleted Instagram for a chunk of time last year because the algorithm did this thing where all it was giving me was, you know, everyone getting pregnant. everyone getting married, everyone doing all of these things and, you know, everything looks nice and shiny and, you know, the Instagram look, right? Yeah, I get that. And it's just sort of like the only reason I then was like,
Starting point is 00:13:26 oh, having a baby would be really nice, oh, getting married would be really nice. The only reason I was thinking that was because of Instagram. So when you take social media out of the mix, it's just sort of like you're living your own life and, you know, only really affected by the people around you immediately as opposed to like, you know, old mate from England is you know doing this flashy wedding you know like so when you deleted instagram say like a
Starting point is 00:13:50 few weeks later did you suddenly feel significantly less pressure to do all those things like did it actually have a direct impact like that yeah so much better oh man i need to get off it i really worked it out ryan yeah society is instagram yeah this is there's the answer to my unanswerable question quote victoria divine 2021 yeah far out it's really hard because it all looks really nice and pretty but like oh it's just a look it is totally just a look and i was reading something today i think it was just like a quote on twitter which i don't frequent often because twitter can be a really toxic space if you're talking about toxic when it comes to social media the sewer rats of society yeah they live on twitter i'm one of them you're one of them yeah okay why are we
Starting point is 00:14:35 not surprised at this but one of the quotes i read was just about how abundant debt is like you see it you feel it but you don't really get to see the financial freedom side of things because you don't get to see in people's bank accounts but you can see their flashy new cars you can see the houses they've just bought you can see the weddings they've arguably financed their engagement rings that they couldn't arguably afford but then when you're you know living a bit more low-key you're saving for bigger goals and stashing it all away like that's not as shiny or as pretty but it should be celebrated even more i think than you know actually achieving a shiny goal that looks beautiful on instagram yeah yeah um random question they're all random because i feel
Starting point is 00:15:20 like there's a bit of a more of a personal philosopher what's what am i trying to say there you go thank you there you go i can leave the podcast now someone once said to me are we can all feel a bit lost until we find our spot and we find our people and i guess my question is do you think maybe one day you'll be traveling and there'll be some random job or you'll meet a partner and you'll be in this beautiful spot in the world and you go oh actually i want all those settled down things now because i've found my spot and i've found my people or is it a purely i just want to be traveling until the day i die like could there be a chance that your circumstances will change and you'll go oh actually maybe i've i've found yeah that's
Starting point is 00:16:03 interesting my settle down spot maybe are you pervy but are you single at the moment we didn't ask that before i am recently single do you think your current wants are reflective of your current personal situation yeah i the guy was with absolutely beautiful person but we were on different pages like he hadn't traveled and he grew up a lot differently like financially and all this sort of stuff we're all very very different um but it was just sort of like i just felt like i needed someone that was kind of on my level in terms of life experience you know yeah i was with someone when i was 24 who was like babies get a job forever nine to five and i was like i'm a long way from that yeah i need like some sense of adventure you know i like that and
Starting point is 00:16:55 i think it's actually a really interesting concept because for a very long time i wasn't sure if i wanted children no i don't want them right now just because turns out i have a lot of work to do and i feel like you might try and kill me i will i will but i think it wasn't until i met my current partner that i was like want your baby's friend i'm happy to put that on was that on the first tinder message you sent him totally was yeah no but i think it's like you want your babies yeah but it kind of comes down to what you were saying before like once you meet your people because i was always feeling a little bit lost and like not that a relationship is something that you should be defined by or even you know be searching for to be a whole person right but i
Starting point is 00:17:35 remember just being like no i actually want this thing now i wasn't sure now i found someone i really want to do that with that's pretty cool i think a lot of the money diaries there's been a theme of like when you and your partner are on the same page in terms of values it seems to work and a lot of the stories we hear uh when they're not and uh for today's money diaries i'm sure if the person they're with was i want to travel i want to do this and whatever you'd be like oh like it's meant to be and and off we go and i don't mean marriage i just mean you're on the same page in terms of you don't want to buy a house and and lock it down for 25 years or how long's the mortgage these days be 30 30 years it's a lot of time yeah a lot of time that's a lot
Starting point is 00:18:14 of time um yeah he didn't value travel like i did that was kind of one of the killers but if that's your number one value i mean that that's sort of that's it right but you can't go into a relationship and literally be asked to compromise your number one value yeah like that's never gonna work out in my humble opinion yeah should we take relationship callers for next we definitely sure next next on christian the love god victoria will give more relationship advice here's what i'm suggesting just ask i want your babies yeah here's what i'm suggesting for the the three of us yeah okay victoria myself ryan today's money diarist should we pencil in a calendar thing for this time next year because i feel like oh my gosh yes can we do your money
Starting point is 00:19:00 diary in 12 months yeah i feel like you're in a space where you've got your finances turned around you're saving a little bit obviously overseas travel isn't huge at the moment with covid but i would just be fascinated to see where this pans out do you feel like you're in a similar spot like you're ready for your next adventure yeah sure man i am actually i actually wrote down the other day i was like april 2022 you're moving overseas no excuses no excuses well given me doing this via zoom slash phone call doesn't matter where you are we'll get that money diary money diarist 27 and not conforming thank you very much for sharing some of your story and like they were saying there's a big theme and trend in the group of i want the house and i want this and i want
Starting point is 00:19:45 that and i think it's refreshing to hear someone goes oh happy for you guys but actually i'm about all of this over here where do you want to travel next to obviously covid has put us in a position where we're not able to leave the country. Oh, we can go to New Zealand as of, I think, next week. But where are you planning on traveling? What is your number one travel goal at this point? I have been to a lot of places, but I actually haven't been to New Zealand. Really? It is beautiful.
Starting point is 00:20:14 We were going to rent a van and drive around. So I think that might be it. Either that or take my sister's stuff over there with COVID. Yes, we all love New Zealand, I promise. It is stunning. Sweet. Can't wait to hear about it in a year. Oh, I thank you.
