Starting point is 00:00:00 On air and iHeartRadio, Money, Money, Money, She's on the Money Radio Show, Money, Money, Money, with Victoria Devine, starts now. Hello and welcome to the She's on the Money podcast, the podcast for millennials who want financial freedom. How did I do that? Oh, it's still not right. Oh mate, that was better than last week. Yeah, look Mitch, do you reckon you'd do better? I reckon I'd do better. I'll give you a turn next week.
Starting point is 00:00:25 All right, next week, if I nail it, I get Trav's salary and I also get Trav's full family and all his... Actually, his cat that's really nice, so you might want to take the cat. Oh, God. I'm a dog person. Oh, okay. Sorry, sorry. All right, well, I'm both.
Starting point is 00:00:40 So I don't want Trav's disgusting cat. I'm joking, Trav. Sorry, I'm trying to make fun jokes here. I'm trying to be friendly. I'm trying to be kind and you guys are just being... Oh, I'm sorry. You're the one who just absolutely shit-canned me. Because I want to go because it's my hen's day today
Starting point is 00:00:57 and all my friends are waiting. Do you know what, though? I've actually got another little money tidbit. Remember last week I gave you two really cool fun facts about money? No. Remember the cents and the notes? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. But did we put those on the podcast?
Starting point is 00:01:10 Oh, we did put those on the podcast. Oh, that was actually really good. That was smart. I've got another one. Oh, money facts from Trav. Do you know in like 20 cent pieces and 10 cents, actually any coin, they've got a ridge around the edge, right? so there's ridges around the edge.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Yeah. Do you know why they are? So they make nice sounds when they roll. That's all I've got. No. Because. You've put a lot of thought into that. Hey, what have you got, Mitch?
Starting point is 00:01:36 Why do they have ridges around the edge? Because they're for blind people. Oh, no, because they're all got the same ridges, mate. No, they're not because 50 cent pieces, they're smooth. They feel different to 20 cent pieces. Thank you. Because back in the day, right, people actually would clip off little parts of the silver coins because the silver it was made from was a little filing.
Starting point is 00:02:00 They'd collect them from every coin, go snip, snip, snip, snip, snip, and then they'd go and take those to the bank and get more money for them, still spend the coins, so they put ridges around the outside so people couldn't do it because if they cut it off and there was no ridges, they'd be like, somebody's messed with this coin. I'd still mess with the coin. You would, anyway. I'd still mess with the coin.
Starting point is 00:02:18 I think that's great. Do you know what? It took me a really long time to realize that our silver coins and our gold coins were not made of silver and they were not made of gold. I remember finding that out and I was like, oh, like here I am thinking that, wow, I have a gold coin. It's not gold. They're lying. You know what isn't depressing? What isn't depressing?
Starting point is 00:02:35 Free bloody chickens. I can't wait to see where you go with this. Free bloody chickens. Yes, free chickens. I love this. That's what we're talking about today. We've really taken the Victoria's Hens Day theme and run with it. I know.
Starting point is 00:02:46 So people think, how can I save money? I bet when you go, I'm going to listen to the She's On The Money radio show, I'm not going to learn how to get me a free chicken. Well, you are wrong because you are this week. Look, this week I'm very excited. Pet or pot is what happens. And I actually couldn't believe it. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:03:04 That's unethical. We can't say that again. We're going to say it again and we're going to put it in the radio show. I hope it makes the final edit. I'm going to make sure. You just played music really loud over that segment in the radio, right? Yeah, no, no, no, no. It's fine.
Starting point is 00:03:17 And also, you're going to give some sneaky little tips about how we can get some more money in our bank accounts. But also, get yourself into the lounge of your favourite airline very quickly. Yeah, well, I like to go to the lounge when I'm flying because it makes me feel fancy. And then I go straight to the back of the plane when I get on it. So, you know, the lounge is good. Free wine makes the flight more bearable. It's good. It's great.
Starting point is 00:03:41 Yeah, amen. There's no turbulence. There's no turbulence when you've had a wine. Yeah, exactly. You are the turbulence. It's all turbulence, that's it. What are you going to do on your hands night before we go? I don't actually know.
Starting point is 00:03:52 What are you hoping to do? What do you know? I don't have any. Oh, no, I do. I did say no strippers. I know that's probably a little bit bland. Boring. Yeah, like you guys can be a bit more creative than that.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Hey, Mitch, you've got to cancel that stripper, mate. Cancel it, cancel it. I've got three of them, all three. Yeah. I'll call Braxton and you call Stella. Yeah, okay. Those are good stripper names. Very good stripper names.
Starting point is 00:04:15 Call Magic Mike. Oh, actually, if it's Magic Mike, we can absolutely have him. That's all right. I've got some rules. The only thing I know about my hens is that it is tennis themed. Oh, that's kind of fun. Yeah, like Wimbledon whites. Wow.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Yeah. Love all for all. I am kind of hoping it just means we drink a lot of Pimms. Yeah, good. Or what's that other one that they drink all the time? Aperol? Yeah, Spritzies. I love an Aperol Spritz.
Starting point is 00:04:42 A bit of a Spritzie. Spritz it up. All right, well, the reason why Mitch and I are half naked is because we are your surprise strippers. I am so lucky. I'm basically a female stripper. I've got a B cup. Oh, nice.
Starting point is 00:04:57 If you need to borrow a bra, let me know. The rest of you cannot see the show. You have to listen to the show, which is She's On The Money radio show happening right now. Let's get into it, Mitchie. This is She's On The Money radio show. Coming up a little bit later on, we're going to do a money dilemma. where Maddie's actually asked whether or not pet insurance is a scam.
Starting point is 00:05:18 Budget Director, amazing pet insurance. I believe your dog Lucy is with her. Lucky Lucy. Honestly, thank God I haven't had to claim on it, so you won't get any experience there. But you know what I have done? Read their PDS. We love a PDS in this house.
Starting point is 00:05:30 And you know what? I'm going to ask Mitch. Mitch, what's a PDS? Listen, I grew up with sisters. PDS is that time of month when, you know, it hits. And I don't want to say mood swings, but, you know, the temperament sort of kicks in. Okay, let's do this. Let's get out of this real quick.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Gumtree, trash or treasure, Mitch? This is a brand new game that we've got for Victoria. Tell us what it is. So it's that feeling you get when you look through Gumtree and you think, oh, my God, I found a piece of treasure or that's a piece of trash. But we all have an item that we've got off Gumtree. We'll bring it to each other.
Starting point is 00:06:07 And I think I'm going to go first because this was actually sent in to me, guys. Oh, really? He sent me this. So it's a limited edition Mario milk. Mario milk? I don't know if you can see this. So the best by date on the milk is March 10th, but it actually spells out Mario.
Starting point is 00:06:22 Oh, wow. M-A-R 10. It looks like Mario. They're asking for $69,000. Is it empty? Is it just the bottle? Has it been cleaned? It is full, so I don't think you'd be able to drink the Mario milk.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Oh, it's vintage. Yeah, that's trash for me. Trash. All right, is this a gum tree, trash, or treasure? A big blue yacht, 23 foot, French to four, 1,300 fin keel. I don't even know what the hell that is. I don't know what that is. Someone's trying to sell their boat.
Starting point is 00:06:52 He says, I know with all of my projects, I won't get around to this one. The buyer will need to pick up. Lots of work, I imagine, but it looks like it could end up being a great project located in Daylesford. Remember, you're going to have to go pick it up. What would you pay for that? I don't think I'd pay anything because I live quite close to the city. and there's, like, permitted parking outside my house and there's actually not a lot of opportunity to store a boat.
Starting point is 00:07:16 So I'm probably going to shy away from this one. Too many Range Rovers in the driveway there, mate. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's definitely it. No, this is trash for me. This is absolute trash. I'm not a boat boy. Look at me. Do I look like a boat boy?
Starting point is 00:07:27 No, you could be a boat boy. I think you look pretty good in little boat shoes. Yeah, I've been watching Below Deck. You definitely look like you fit in all of them. You think? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'd have to be the captain, though. I couldn't be, like, a drink wench.
Starting point is 00:07:38 I'd have to be the captain. All right, mate. No, no, no, you'd definitely be like a deckhand. It'd be good. I think we're flirting very close for a Saturday morning to a certain amount of things here. No, okay, so it was $2,500. Oh, that's pretty cheap for a boat.
Starting point is 00:07:53 It was, because now, Victoria Devine, it is free. Oh, free boat. Oh, shit, Victoria, put your life jacket on. We're picking it up this summer. So, trash or treasure? Trash. Like, honestly, what am I going to do with that? Fits perfectly in line with your persona.
Starting point is 00:08:08 And my values. All right, well, guys, I have one for you, and I want to know if you guys think that it is trash or treasure, but I also want to know what you pay for this. This one I've picked up for you, Mitchie Mitch. All right, so we've got three roosters. So three of us? This one's for you.
Starting point is 00:08:23 Yeah, three roosters. I can't wait to hear how this ties in. It's from Honeywood in Tasmania. It says pet or pot, free to a good home, humane killing, or add to your own flock. I'm done with all the cockle doodle deuce. They're about six months old. You better not be a cockfighter.
Starting point is 00:08:40 Bad karma to you. Okay. But the thing that really got me here was pet or pot? Yeah, you know what? You can keep it as pets. You can keep it or you could just cook it. Yeah. Either or.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Or just add some Maggi, yeah, curry flavouring and you've got yourself tea. Yeah, babe, have you got some mesel stock? Chuck that in there. Throw a bay leaf. I don't know. What else do they put in there? I'm going to get these three roosters. I'm going to get them for free.
Starting point is 00:09:00 They're coming straight to your house and you are going to cook us up a nice little feast, Victoria. I don't even eat chicken, guys. This makes me so uncomfortable. All right. So I want to know. Treasure. Cash or treasure?
Starting point is 00:09:12 You reckon treasure. Hey, let's get back into the money stuff. It is time to do this. Yeah, each week we bring somebody's financial story on air. That's how we make sure that we're a legit money finance show. Yeah, we've got to do some work. It's just legitimate. Yeah, kicked off the radio or something.
Starting point is 00:09:29 I don't want that to happen. And that's already almost happened. God, remember that meeting? That was awkward. Please don't talk about it. I'll get PTSD, honestly. We've still got two more strikes. It's fine.
Starting point is 00:09:37 We can do all of them. Yeah, but if you don't acknowledge what happened, it's not true. Exactly. Hey, if you've got a question, hit us up on socials. Just search She's On The Money. Maddie's actually posted in our She's On The Money Facebook community. She's asking Mitch about pet insurance. Yeah, so this is what Maddie says.
Starting point is 00:09:50 She says, first of all, I love the show and Mitch is very handsome. Maddie, that's so kind. She also says, does anyone have any thoughts and experiences with pet insurance? We are getting a puppy in a few weeks. We live semi-rurally and ticks can be a problem around here. I just want to make sure I'm doing the best by her and make sure she's covered if anything happens. Looking for reasons against and for good and bad experiences
Starting point is 00:10:12 with specific companies and things to watch out for in the contracts, et cetera. Victoria, this is your domain. You've got a dog and you know contracts. This is perfect for you. I do. So we're going to go back to the contract part of this because you thought it was PMS, not PDS.
Starting point is 00:10:26 Oh, that's it. I thought we'd move past that. No, we haven't. That's what the meeting was about, guys. But we're going to start the conversation there, right? So, PDS is a product disclosure statement, and that's actually going to tell you the terms and conditions of any type of insurance policy. And it seems to be the part that a lot of people get a little bit stuck on when they're picking insurance because you go to the website, you read all their beautiful marketing and see what they say, and you go, all right, well, that sounds good, sign up. And then, unfortunately, something might happen to a pet, and you go to claim, and you're like, oh, I thought I could claim I had pet insurance.
Starting point is 00:10:58 But the PDS is the nitty-gritty details of the insurance policy. So you really need to actually have a bit of a flick through that to make sure it covers all the things that you're looking for. So Maddie said there's a bit of a tick problem. So what I'd do is go to the pet insurance policy that you're looking at and even just Control-F tick, look if it's covered or not because you don't want to get a pet insurance policy. Pay for it because they can be expensive these days.
Starting point is 00:11:24 Then if something happens, you find you're not actually covered for what you thought you were covered for. And that advice goes to any type of insurance, any type of policy that you take out but when it comes to pet insurance it's really up to you so yes I have pet insurance on Lucy and the reason I do is because dogs are little nightmares I would never want someone to be in the financial situation where they're like I have to pick between getting a loan or spending money I don't have in my pet's life because nowadays pets are such big parts of the family that I do think that insurance serves a really important role
Starting point is 00:11:59 However, I think a lot of the criticism around pet insurance comes from people not doing their research properly. Whereas Maddie has said, there's tick issues where I live and I want to make sure that's all good. And if you look at, you know, budget directs policy, because they're our best friends at the moment. Yeah, there is a tick policy included. So tick paralysis is something they cover. There's a bit of a waiting period, but it's really important to understand what is and isn't included and have a look at those things. I promise a PDS can feel really overwhelming because you're like oh what the hell it's like the terms and conditions but when you start to break it down the entire purpose of a PDS is that it's written in a way that lay people
Starting point is 00:12:39 i.e you and me can read it properly. From my perspective pet insurance is definitely not a scam but it's up to you and your values but it's actually really important when you're looking at any type of policy to take out, that it actually covers the things you think it will because those scammy stories, they come from people who didn't read the PDS and then tried to claim something that wasn't included and go, oh my God, I don't understand why they're doing so hard by me. And the reality of the circumstances are, well, it was never included. So read the PDS.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Read the PDS. Dogs actually do some of the craziest stuff. Yeah, they do. A good friend of mine has two dogs. He left his little boy's jumper hanging over a chair Covered in yogurt Came back Found a dog had eaten one of the sleeves
Starting point is 00:13:26 Oh no Had to take both of them Because he wasn't sure which one it was Double money Oh no, that is literally the worst So let's do this right now 31065 Why'd you have to take your pet to the vet?
Starting point is 00:13:39 How much did it cost? We want to hear some crazy stories And hopefully, please keep it to ones where they're okay We don't want to hear any grim stories Happy endings only, please. Today's meant to be happy. Careful. This is She's on the Money Radio Show.
Starting point is 00:13:52 I love this episode. We've talked about chickens. We've talked about my hens. We get to talk about people's pet insurance. We get to talk about pets now. We've got some callers. I don't know what it's about. It's all because Maddie hit us up.
Starting point is 00:14:04 She wants to know whether or not she should get pet insurance and she wanted real-life examples. So, Trav opened the lines, 131065. Why did you have to take your pet to the vet? And do we want to know how much it costs? We do. We do. Yes, yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:14:16 Who have we got, Trav? We've got Geordie right now. Geordie, what did your Jack Russell do, mate? She licked a cane toad up in Darwin. What? Like, what are you doing licking a cane toad, sir? Did she have a good time, though? Yeah, she was loving it until she collapsed and started frosting at the mouth.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Oh, honey. What happened? So you had to take her to bed? She's okay now? Yeah, yeah, just took her to bed and got her some D1VM. And then, yeah, she'd come good, but it was looking a bit hairy there at one stage. Oh, and how much did it cost you? I think it was over $5,000, $500.
Starting point is 00:14:47 Oh, I thought you said $5,000. I was like, wow. $500 because your dog licked a frog. Like what? She was just out there looking for her Prince Charming. She'd heard the news. She found a cane toad, got confused. Sounds like your story.
Starting point is 00:15:01 $500 for a good trip. Yeah. That's good value to me. Thanks for sharing that. Thanks, Geordie. No worries. All right, on 131065, we are taking your calls right now. Why did you have to take your pet to the vet
Starting point is 00:15:12 and how much did it cost you? Jess, your staffie has been causing you a bit of trouble, mate. What happened? Yes, our dog, Cody, had excessive drooling. Like, I've never seen so much drool in my life. We thought he'd been bitten by a snake or had a toothache or something. So we got the vet out on a Sunday night. Oh, Sunday night.
Starting point is 00:15:34 You're feeling expensive already, Jess. Already a surcharge. Ka-ching, ka-ching. Yeah, I think it was a $200 call-out fee. Jeez. Oh, ew, no, thank you. Yeah. So it turns out he was perfectly fine.
Starting point is 00:15:48 He'd watched me prep and start cooking a lamb roast. Oh, no! Your dog was just hungry. Yeah, it was too much for him. It was so much drool. Well, you know what, mate? That's your own bloody fault. You brought it on yourself.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Stop being such a great cook. And look, let's be honest. Low-key flex from Jess there. Yeah, she's cooking a lamb roast. Do you know what she could do, though, if that's an issue? No more vet call-outs if she goes and buys those three roosters. Oh, God. Yeah, she could just have chicken instead.
Starting point is 00:16:17 You need to let go of the roosters. They're already there. They're already someone's cutlets. It's my hen's weekend, guys. Let me carry on the chicken info. It's been a very cock-themed show. Yeah, always is. Hey, thanks, Jess.
Starting point is 00:16:31 Awesome, thank you. I would love to hear more pet stories, only nice ones, though. So if you want to leave your story, just hit us up on She's On The Money on our socials. But coming up next, we're going to save you some money with some little sneaky tips, Victoria. You're going to tell us how we can keep more bucks in our bank accounts.
Starting point is 00:16:50 I'm good at this. You are. I'm going to run out of stuff, though. No, you really can't. So you guys are going to have to start helping me out because I don't want us to get fired. No, mate. It's not called he's on the money.
Starting point is 00:16:59 That's why it's called she's on the money. It's not they're on the money. No. It's not they're on the money. It's true. It's true. Guys, let's do this. Victoria, you are literally minutes away from jumping out into your little hen's night
Starting point is 00:17:17 Whatever is going to happen, I don't know I don't know either, I'm kind of scared We're going to make you do a little bit more work Look at me, because you need to give us some sneak I wrote down my tips on my phone and I didn't want to forget them Because I want you guys to think I'm really smart But do you remember playing The Sims when you were young? Of course
Starting point is 00:17:32 I wish I had a money hack as good as that Rosebud hack where you'd put in, like, the cheat code and then write Rosebud and then it'd give you, like, $1,000. Yeah, or Motherlode, yeah. Yeah, Motherlode, that was the other one. There were a few others. I remember Googling them and thinking I was, like, a hacker. Turns out I'm not.
Starting point is 00:17:47 That was just how the game works. I'm just going to walk into Commonwealth Bank and be like, Motherlode, and if you don't give me millions of dollars. Do you reckon there's a hack for that? And they just, like, start shooting cash at you? No, all right, let's do some real actual money hacks. All right, so I've got three for you today. One is an actual money hack.
Starting point is 00:18:03 One is a mindset hack because we're a little bit fluffy in this house. And another one's about points. I'm not really a credit card kind of gal, but I do travel a lot for work, as you guys know. I'm always between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane because, you know, I'm just really popular. But I always fly with Virgin. One, I will have a very long conversation with you if you'd like to about how their buffet is much better if you get to the lounge than the Qantas one. You're preaching to the choir. I agree there.
Starting point is 00:18:30 Yeah, right. Much better. but I'm not getting into the lounge because I you know I'm flying business class that's not in the budget I'm getting into the lounge because I've flown so much but the perk here is actually me giving a shameless plug to Virgin Australia at the moment they actually have double points at the moment so like if you've got a plan to book a holiday you'll get double points on eligible flights at the moment that's a bit fluffy but it'll get you into the lounge quicker because who doesn't want to travel domestically and be bougie enough to go into the lounge and put it
Starting point is 00:18:59 on Instagram and make it look like you're rich. Yeah, you've got to look like you're fancy. So anyway, I thought that that was a pretty good little hack. The next one is the money hack, I promised. Or do you want the mindset hack first? Like what one do you want? Mindset. You want the mindset.
Starting point is 00:19:12 Yeah, do mindset. Let's end on the money. Let's end on the money. This issue's on the money after. Yeah, all right, all right. So I think a lot of us are really good at frivolous spending. And one thing in this day and age, I'm looking directly at you, Mitch Turi. Me?
Starting point is 00:19:25 Yeah, you with your theremin. Have you touched that since you bought it? I forgot about the theremin. Yeah, the theremin. Come on. He's looking at me like he forgot he owned the theremin. What's a theremin? Oh, yes.
Starting point is 00:19:38 The thing you spend $800 on, mate. That's enough. Move on. Move on. But I think in this day and age where money is less tangible, I'm not like handing over a crisp 50 and feeling like I'm getting less back. We tap our debit cards, right, and it just doesn't feel like we're losing that much. So, I sometimes like to think of my hours worked as the price of things.
Starting point is 00:19:58 So, if you're making like 15 bucks an hour and something costs $45, I think you need to start reframing it and going, is that worth me working for three whole hours? Yeah, good point. Like, I think that puts things in context a little bit that makes you reframe it. And for me, that's a lot of money. Like, have a think about your money in that context before making a purchase that you didn't necessarily need to make. because I think a lot of you expect me to come on here and be like, don't buy your $5 coffees, like you'll become a millionaire. Unfortunately, that's not the case. But little money habits and little mindset shifts over time are what's going to create a solid money mindset that puts you in
Starting point is 00:20:38 the best position to make bank. So the next money in our back pocket tip comes for people who get paid. So that's nice. I feel like it will work for all of us around this table. Doesn't matter if you get paid monthly weekly fortnightly doesn't matter however the day before you get paid i want you to go in there into your bank account and transfer all the money in there out to your savings so whatever's left over from your last pay pop that into a separate savings account and start fresh obviously make sure that you're covering your bills and expenses and rent and stuff but so many of us frivolously spend and go oh well that was from last pay doesn't matter You're right.
Starting point is 00:21:15 I see it left over. I'm like, that's a little bonus. Yeah, that's leftover money. I'm going to buy myself a little prezzy. Exactly. I've got more money this week. Absolutely not. We are transferring that to our savings.
Starting point is 00:21:24 You would be doing that. Yeah, you would. You would look at it and go, all right, well, that's free money. Free money. Now I have my pay in my account, but that's such a common mindset, right? So let's shift it out to our savings and actually start propping up our savings a bit more. And then, Mitch, maybe you'll buy another theremin. No, no, I did buy $500 aftershave this week.
Starting point is 00:21:42 But it's the end of the show. Do you smell good? Yeah. Because, like, I haven't noticed it, so it must not be that worth it. Hey, Victoria, you've got to get out of here because you are going – are you going to have eyebrows next week? That's what I'm worried about. Do you know what?
Starting point is 00:21:55 I definitely will because my eyebrows are actually tattoos. Good luck shaving those off. Wow, that is something I did not need to know. Anyway, until next week, you can catch up with us anytime on socials. Just search She's On The Money. Mitch, you've got to stick around. And you are on with Britt and Laura with the Life Uncut radio show. That's coming up next.
Starting point is 00:22:16 But this has been She's On The Money for you Saturday morning. See you next week.
