I survived nine months in captivity
and I've spent my life exploring
how other people survive what should have destroyed them.
I'm Elizabeth Smart and these are the Survivor Files.
Every week I'm with survivors who live through
the unthinkable abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced. These are stories about what it
takes to make it out alive. Listen to The Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the IHeart Radio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey there, everybody, Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes here
from the Amy and T.J. podcast. Yes, we cover the biggest news stories of the day every day,
but we also love diving into relationships and the conversations everyone's
seems to be having around them.
Yes, sometimes the biggest news stories of the day are about relationships.
But folks, stick with us at the Amy and T.J.
podcast. Listen to us on Amy and T.J. on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen
to your podcasts.
On Big Lives, we take a single cultural icon.
People like Jane Fonda, George Michael, Little Richard.
And we pull apart the story behind the image.
Discovering forgotten interviews that changed exactly how we see these.
giants of our culture. We're here for the messy, the brilliant, the human version of our heroes.
I'm Emmanuel Jochi. I'm Kai Wright. And this is Big Lives. Listen to Big Lives on the IHeart Radio
Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. In February of 2024, celebrated illustrator and
children's book author Patra Mathers and her husband Michael mailed letters to dozens of friends and
family members to let them know they had died by suicide. Dear honies, this is goodbye. By the time
get the Schleader both Petra and I will be dead.
Next stop, Wonderland.
Why did they do it?
And what did it do to the people they left behind?
Listen to Death of an Artist on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Hi, I'm Kate Hudson.
And my name is Oliver Hudson.
We wanted to do something that highlighted our relationship.
And what it's like to be siblings.
We are a sibling rivalry.
No, no.
Sibling rivalry.
Oliver.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
No, I was going in a different way.
I was going to go up.
I was going to go a more depressing minor.
Yeah.
I was going to be.
I was going to, hello.
Oh, hey.
I, oh.
Sing.
Sing a song about me.
Emma Robert.
I'm a Robert.
She's a scream queen.
I'm dead.
My mom and I always watch your singing videos multiple times.
Oh my God.
Colleen is losing my mind.
I like the coffee one.
Yeah.
That was the big hit.
That was the smash success hit.
I know.
That was the hit.
I know.
I got to do it again.
And you know why?
Because it was just so off the cuff.
I know.
I got to do that more.
I want to create a coffee brand, I think.
Okay.
centered around this.
I'm obsessed.
I can't wait to talk to you about books.
We're always going.
We're always going.
I know you guys are always going.
I love it.
Always rolling.
We don't even like have real starts.
We just like kind of start.
Well, we almost started our interview in the other room.
We had to stop speaking to each other.
No, I know.
Every time someone comes, I haven't seen them for a second.
I'm like, oh my God, what do you do?
And they're like, no.
Emma, welcome to sibling revelry.
I know.
I'm so happy to be here.
Two of my favorite people.
I love.
On screen and off screen.
Yes.
I know.
And by the way, Emma sister.
in there.
My sister's in the other room.
I know.
She doesn't want to.
Hi, Grace.
I know.
I'm kind of like, why isn't your sister in on show?
She doesn't want to be.
She doesn't want to be on the.
She's mysterious.
She's the mysterious cool one and I am the non-misterious.
Then let's talk all about her.
Yes.
Well, I did.
It was funny because I was like coming by myself today.
And I said, do you want to come with me?
I'm going on a podcast.
I'll pick you up.
And she's like, fine.
And I was like, yes.
And then she gets in the car.
And I was like, I didn't tell you we were going to Brent.
went so we have a long car ride ahead.
And she was like, oh.
Because then we ended up just like having the best car ride and being alone together,
which is, I don't know about you guys, but that's my favorite sibling pastime,
is just being alone together.
We were just talking about that, how it's so funny,
every time we have a moment where all of us siblings are together,
which is, well, we don't really have all of us in a picture.
We should get one with all of us.
But we need more photos of all the siblings.
I know.
It's a work in progress.
Well, we have like seven siblings, which is a whole other conversation.
And by like, Kate painted this.
stunning. Did you actually be lying? Are you mess it? I was like, wow, paint.
Probably, I could. I feel like I could paint. I mean, it's such a fine thing to Fibb about. I feel like you painted that.
Oliver, if I painted that, I'd be so sad.
Really? I think it's good. I'm like, that's my painting. No, I know. It's very expressive of how you feel.
It's colorful. It's like, you know, it's fall. I'm glad I didn't diss on it.
No, I know. No, it's, it's good. It's kind of shady. Can you imagine?
Maybe work on your arts goals.
But we were saying that all the siblings, we never,
we always say we're going to like have, like make time for each other.
Go to dinner.
Let's have sibling dinners, just us.
Yeah.
And it never happened.
It's impossible.
See, I have the opposite problem.
I'm with my mom and my sister so much that it's, it's turning into Grey Gardens.
Oh, oh, really?
I mean, not really.
And by the way, Grey Gardens is a compliment.
But we're, I find myself with them so much that I'm like,
we're so lucky we need to be together this much.
I'm like, is this unhealthy?
Yeah.
She's seriously codependent.
How, what's the age difference between your nurses?
10 years.
10 years.
Yeah.
You're older.
I'm older.
Yeah.
Yes.
And half sister.
Half sister.
Yeah.
What is your age gap?
Three?
Almost three.
Almost three.
And then Wyatt is 10.
Oh, so you have the 10 age gap.
We're half.
Wyatt and I have Kate and I have full.
And then we're full.
We're full.
And then Boston is our step.
But we all grew up.
I mean, we don't really, yeah.
It's not even a thing.
Yeah.
It's a weird thing, isn't it?
When you're so close with your sibling and then you have to say like, oh, we don't have the same biological.
I know.
We don't worry about it.
It doesn't even matter.
Yeah.
You don't do that.
I'm like, you've seen it all.
Yeah.
So you've seen things no one else has seen.
So you just get the stamp of sibling.
Yeah.
That's how I feel.
And then you just get to be grateful you didn't get certain genes.
Right.
Well, you got that gene.
You're like that because of it.
But having that 10-year age gap, when did that relationship truly sort of blossom into just like amazing connection, amazing friends?
Oh my God, cute question.
I'm like, Grace, are you listening?
I mean, we were always so close.
Like, my whole life growing up, I was like, I want a baby sister.
I want a baby sister.
And my mom raised me the majority of like my kid life as a single mom.
And she's like, I don't know where the sister's coming from, you know?
And I was like, would be like manifesting a sister.
And then she met my sister's dad.
And she was in her 40s and she's like, I'm pregnant.
And then everyone's like, it's a boy.
And I'm like, she's pregnant.
And it's the sister I've been asking for.
Like, no one messed this up for me.
And I mean, it was like crazy.
I would feel like, and she was like my little doll.
And I just like loved her more than anything in the world.
And I still do.
And now, and then I would say, you know, when she was like a teenager, you know, I was like in my 20s.
So there was like separation.
And then I don't know.
In the last like, you know, five, six years,
you become incredibly, incredibly close.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And you just spend so much time together.
Because you know, like, I mean, you have a small age gap,
but with your younger brother, the age gap,
it's always 10 years, but it gets smaller and smaller,
the more you enter like similar stages of life.
I was just about to say that.
I'm 50 and why it's 40 and we're basically, obviously the same.
But I remember hoping and waiting and wanting him
to get older.
Yeah, totally.
could hang out and have beers together.
And, like, you know what I mean?
No, I mean, that's the best.
Because also when me and my sister, like, used to argue and she'd be 15 and I was 25,
it's not a good look for me.
No.
Like, I'm arguing with a 15-year-old.
Like, you know, now our age gap, I can argue and it's not.
Right.
I feel better about leaning into how wrong you are right now.
My mom would be like, really?
You're 25 years old.
Right, right.
Exactly.
Like, mom.
Like, wait a minute.
You're an adult.
You grew up in L.A.
I grew up in L.A.
And you were born in L.
I was born in Rinebeck.
New York. And then my mom always says she came out to L.A. for a long weekend and then 20 years went
by. And now she's back in New York. But grew up out here, went to school right near here.
I know. And you're still here. I'm back and forth now because I feel, I feel like that. Are you
NYU? I'm NYNCA. Yeah. NYCA. Do you have to pay the piettaire tax? I do not own an apartment in
New York. Luckily and unluckily. The piediare.
Do you?
No.
Anyone in this room?
No.
All right.
I just like saying,
Pietre.
It sounds so chic and ominous.
It is.
I know.
It sounds like a fake crime in a movie.
Exactly.
How is Mr. Murphy?
You're doing it.
Oh, yeah, you're doing your, right?
It comes out soon.
We're doing American Horror Story season 13.
Oh my gosh.
Crazy.
So trippy.
Yeah.
Like beyond trippy because here, it's weird.
So we shot, I shot my first season of American Horror Story, Coven, in 2013, which was 13 years ago.
And now it's season 13.
So like the number 13 has taken on this like life of its own for me.
That's so weird.
No, it's really weird.
But that was 13 years.
Like, well, also.
How was 2013 13 years ago?
Well, don't.
I mean, that's.
Because of math.
Do we want to start to.
Oh, I was going to say because of portals and.
Yeah, portals.
Other dimensions.
But I guess we can talk about math.
You know.
No, but what's.
weird is that last year they had like skipped doing a season. So it's just weird that it wouldn't
be the 13 years since I did it for the 13th season if they hadn't skipped last year if you
want to get non-mathy about it, you know, and get woo-woo about it. How does this, how does he
can't believe it? I know. Yeah. It's so long. What's crazy is Ryan, everything he touches works.
Yeah. It's insane. He doesn't have any failures. Well, he also just, I feel like he's like a
like a trend predictor without even realizing it.
Like you go back and watch, I mean, Glee, you were on Glee.
I love to Glee.
Yeah.
But even Glee, like, some of it's more relevant now.
Yeah.
And there's certain, like, I don't know, jokes that were said that, you know,
it's like, on The Simpsons, when people are like, oh, it's like, I don't know,
I feel like Ryan's very predictive in that way.
And then he's also sort of leaned in more as it's like as his career has gone on,
like to the camp of it all, which is just so fun.
And even if, even if like, you know, what was the thing that, you know, All's Fair or whatever, was it the one with Kardashian?
All's fair.
And then an episode of American Horror Story was with Kim as well, Delicate.
I watched that with my daughter.
Like, you can't not watch that and have so much fun watching everybody just having a great time.
It doesn't matter what anybody says about it.
It's like, this is fun to digest and to watch.
I'm obsessed.
I mean, I've always, like, been a fan.
I mean, I was a fan from Glee.
I remember watching the pilot of American Horror Story live on TV,
and I was like, I want to be on the show.
And like years and years went by.
And I remember when they asked me to come onto the show,
it was like originally for a couple episodes.
And I was like, yes, of course, whatever.
Like, I'll be there.
And, you know, went to New Orleans and like got to play a witch,
my lifelong dream and had the best time.
And then we rolled into scream queens together.
Yeah.
Oh, so fun.
Yeah.
And that was another one that was so fun.
Oh, my God.
That was crazy.
People come up to me now.
about it who are like,
we're five years old when it came out,
which was like,
that trips,
that trips me out.
You know,
it's crazy?
I just dropped my son off at Boulder.
I moved him in, Colorado.
Cute.
It was amazing.
But he,
I was staying at this hotel with Aaron,
and there's frat parties,
like going off and everything.
I was like,
let's just go walk and check this out
because I went to Boulder.
And I was like,
I feel weird.
I'm like,
fuck it, let's just go.
And so we're walking up the street
and this huge frat party
and there's girls everywhere outside
and guys and these girls like, are you from scream queens?
And I'm like, yeah.
And I'm like, guys, look.
And I'm like, are you fuck, dude, you're from screen queens?
Because it's college and it's just, you know, everywhere now.
So I felt like the man.
And I was like, wilder my son couldn't get in.
I was like, but I could get in.
You still got it.
I still got it.
I still got it.
I still got a guy.
That was also the wildest time in New Orleans.
That time was like, that time was crazy because I was working there.
Kurt was working there.
I was so fun.
My dad and I were doing Deepwater Horizon.
So fun.
You were doing scream queens.
I was doing scream queens drinking my face off.
Oh, I was eating so much eating.
Oh, my God.
Eating and drinking.
Smoking.
Smoking everything.
It was so wild and fun.
I miss New Orleans.
I know.
I do too.
I mean, it was just so fun because it felt like summer camp.
You know what I mean?
Like I feel like, I know, L.A. and New York, to me feel like overwhelming to film in
because like you also have your like real life running in any of your work
life and it's like so hard to get anywhere.
And then like New Orleans, it's this like big city, small town.
You just feel like you're in like an alternate universe.
So great.
We just have the best time.
It was so much fun.
Okay.
So you grew up in L.A.
And you went to, you went to school here, but like, you didn't have traditional,
like a traditional upbringing.
I would say no.
Yeah.
Did you?
Did you guys?
No.
No.
But you didn't go.
No.
You were homeschooled and.
We went to school, but then work.
We were working.
I went to school.
I went to Wonderland, which was like the best time of my life at school in Laurel Canyon.
Like loved that.
Then I went to Turning Point, which was also amazing.
And then I went to Archer as a last hurrah to like try to finish school.
And then I started working regularly on a TV show on Nickelodeon on Fabulous.
This show I was on from like 12 to 15 years old.
And so I did homeschooling.
And then I've always loved reading and like I love learning, but I'd never really like
school setting. So homeschooling, I was like, I get to read all day and, like, write and just kind of,
you know, like check in every so often. I was like, this is amazing. So, and I get to work. So that
worked for me. And that's, I graduated, uh, doing that. My mom was like very, she was like, she was like,
she was just very strict. And, you know, like I had to, you know, I had to do chores. I had to do my
school work. I had to, I remember being like, why do I have to wake up if I'm homeschooled? She's like,
you need to get up and get dressed. And I was like, I don't want to do that.
She's like, well, she's like, you need to, you know, you need to do all these things.
And I was, I was held to, you know, certain rules if I wanted to keep acting.
Because, like, the acting was what I loved.
But my mom and her mind, that was like a reward for doing all the things I was supposed to be doing.
It wasn't like, you know, I couldn't like get away with stuff because I was working.
That's great.
Yeah.

I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me.

This is Prose Society, the weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for thought daughters, pop culture obsessives, and anyone who thinks Pride and Prejudice and Love Island deserve the same level of discourse.
I'm Eli Rallo and every week we're connecting the dots between books, the internet, and the conversations everyone can't stop having.
I'm going to have to look up this story.
I'm obsessed.
So I'm obsessed.
From bestselling authors and your favorite book talk creators to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table.
It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters,
then that is a Trojan horse.

What I try to do is faux journal.
I don't know. Have you guys heard of faux journaling?
Yeah, it's reading. It's called reading.
So we don't like to use that word anymore.
A panel of New Yorker cartoonists.
Have you guys done Terry Gross's Peloton class?
No! I've been dying too.
I'm so sorry.
I'm seeing a reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Audra McDonald's at the Wonderland Bookstore on 14th.
That's crazy.
I went to the Wonderland Bookstore yesterday and I heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark 30.
No way.
We'll have to come to the last bookstore though.
Kim Cottrell is reading the guitar tabs of yesterday.
A panel of Eurovision participants.

Middle school is a different world than the one we grew up in.
I'm Dr. Joy, and this is therapy for black girls.
We spend real time on it in our surviving middle school run,
bringing in a child psychologist and a psychiatrist who's raising two black girls of his own to talk about what's really going on with our kids right now.
So it's literally physiological and neurological and psychological and psychological chaos happening all this end up.
We got into group chats and gaming, friendships and bullying, and how to tell the difference between healthy monitoring and the kind of surveillance that erodes trust.
There's belonging. You could think of belonging as I can be myself and I can still be accepted.
and then there's fitting in.
Spitting in says I have to change who I am
in order to avoid rejection.
Then we turn the conversation toward the fathers,
sitting down with therapists Keir Gaines on Black fatherhood
and what it means to raise a daughter through this stage.
You don't have on shorts, so you can't do flips,
you have on the dressy, you have to cross your legs.
That's the range of this run,
from screen time to identity to the father's doing the work at home.
We have to get off her device,
but the reality is there's a lot of life out there
that we don't want you as your adults in their lives to miss out on.
This has been our surviving middle school run.
Brought to you by the people who spend their careers thinking about exactly this.
I'm Dr. Joy.
Listen to therapy for black girls on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
And then was that, Nickelodeon, was that like your first job and then it just like lasted for that long?
And you're just still going.
I'm like, yeah.
You know, like, I'm still going to.
You're like, another American fucking horror store.
You know, it's so funny, though, it's like, like I say, I feel younger now than I did then.
Like, when I was 12, I was like, like, I felt like, you know, now I'm like, wow, I'm like, it was a long day.
Like, because, you know, everyone's also like inviting you to things.
And, you know, you have kids.
I have kids.
It's like, you know, everyone's doing stuff and having so much fun.
And you're like, I'm on a soundstage in Brooklyn until 2 a.m., which not complaining.
I love it, but it's just funny.
You realize what you're missing, like, from your real life as you get older.
When I was younger, it's like, what is better?
There's nothing I'm going to be doing than this.
Nothing better.
And when you have kids.
No, nothing's better.
I have your kids, obviously.
No, just hearing.
When you're missing the, like, the milestones and everyone's enjoying it.
Like, then school drop off and you're like having done it in like weeks.
I go to school drop off and everyone's like, hi, what's your name?
I'm like, it's December.
I'm like, sorry.
I know.
I don't say it's like, but.
No, and then I get embarrassed about that, you know, or showing up to, like, the Mother's Day thing at my son's preschool.
And when they write, you know, what does your mommy do?
And he wrote, flies on airplanes.
And I was like, oh, okay.
It's like hung up for all the moms.
I was like, yeah.
That is so fun.
I was like, fly on airplanes.
Like, so cute.
I was like, thanks a lot, Rhodes.
Oh, my God.
Wait, do you have one or two?
Are you two?
You've one.
I said it plural, but I have one.
And he's three.
I'm like, kids.
I have one.
He's going to be six, not to scare me.
Oh, holy shit.
Yeah, he's turning six in December.
I've never felt better or, like, more settled or, like, you know, happier.
Yeah, you're newly married.
I know, newly married.
Wait, you, how long have you been with your partner?
What's his name?
Cody.
Four years.
Four and a half years.
Okay.
And you got married this year?
Well, speaking of age, but so funny is I'm, like, thinking I'm this, like, young bride.
Like, I'm like, oh, my God, I'm like a teenager getting married.
And everyone's like, you're 35.
Like, like, I remember last year.
Everyone's like, are you planning a wedding?
I'm like, oh, you know, soon.
And everyone's like, well, when?
Where did you get married?
We got married in Sun Valley, Idaho.
Oh, fun.
It was so amazing.
It was at his family's house in the backyard.
We put up a tent and had the time of our lives.
And I mean, I had had like, not low expectations, but like, I didn't want to get too
excited about it.
And I, you know, everyone tries to tell you, like, you know, there can be drama and this
and that.
So I was just going into it like it is what it is.
is and it really was one of the best nights of my whole life.
That's so great.
So great.
Big or small?
Medium.
Big small, medium.
It was medium, I would say.
Like, how many people?
Like, 200 people.
Oh, that's pretty big.
For me.
Yeah.
That's like, that's like 400.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I don't know.
Now I feel like people's weddings are very, very big.
So I don't know, that's all medium.
I mean, that's pretty medium.
Mine was 80, but I was in Mexico and I wanted to pair it down.
I didn't allow my wife.
friends to bring their husbands because I didn't know them.
Yeah, see, we also, we definitely, yeah, we wanted, we wanted a bunch of people there to celebrate.
And we all, like, our parents wanted to invite people.
We wanted to invite people.
And I didn't want to be that bride that was, like, rigid with the guest list.
And, you know, everyone's like, oh, you know, I couldn't bring so-and-so.
I mean, granted, we didn't give guests to everyone, sorry.
But, you know, I want to be, like, too rigid.
So, you know, a couple of people last minute were like, can I bring so-and-so?
I was like, sure.
Yeah, fine, fuck it.
Yeah.
But it was, it was so magical.
And my son walked me down the aisle
And that was like
So cute and so sweet
What time of year?
He was so excited
This was in July
Okay so this was a beautiful summer
Mountain town stuff
You just got married
Just got married
And what was your dress?
Have you shown your dress?
Have we seen you?
What was the vibe?
Give me the vibe
The vibe was like vintage
lace form fitting
I said I wanted to look like
A haunted doll
Which people thought was weird
But that was my vibe
It was tea dipped
It was, you know, I wanted to look like a ghost, which people also thought was weird.
But, you know, I loved it.
I loved it.
And I have no regrets.
And it was magical.
And the best part, well, there were two best parts, but one was we had the band at the end.
We had a live band.
They were amazing.
And they played the last song.
I was like, we didn't play Iris by the Goo Goo Goo Dolls.
And everyone's like, really?
And I was like, play it.
I've never seen this many people of all different ages.
Sing a song at the same.
same time at each other.
Especially because everybody's wasted.
Like Google, but Google dolls gets people in a place.
Of course. You were crying.
I mean, it was transcendent.
Yeah, by the way, if you really listen to Goo Goo Doll's lyrics, they're incredible.
I have this thing where I feel like a great song, a hit song, a hit song is a hit song, it doesn't matter what you think of it.
It's so hard to write a hit song.
Yeah.
And, yeah.
He was invited to Taylor and Travis's wedding and you weren't.
He was?
Yeah, she wasn't.
I wasn't either.
The girl girl?
Mr. Gougu.
How do you know that?
Mr. Gugu.
Did you go?
How do you know the guest was?
Tell us.
I did.
Because he.
Like,
such a weird dish.
You're like,
ha-ha, by the way, like,
not.
Yeah, Mr.
Gugu got invited and you did it.
He was on,
he was on a pot.
He was on some sort of a
thing in the reel of Instagram,
and he was
talking about going to their wedding and doing a thing.
So it's like in your hour with them?
The Gooby Dolls is like in your hour of them.
Because you don't want the world to see me.
And you don't think they'd understand.
I think I just didn't.
That is singing that on my instant.
Good dis.
Yeah.
I just love that that was the disc.
Like I was not expecting it.
Oliver loves this dish.
I was like, how are you not invited to Taylor's?
I know.
Like everyone was.
Everyone was.
I wasn't either.
I know.
I wasn't.
No, I know.
I did, but have you, do you have any association with her?
I mean, I've met her.
Right, you've met her.
But I'm anxiously awaiting to see the wedding photos, but I don't think they're coming.
No, no.
It's so funny.
Because I have friends who are invited her.
I'm like, wait, what?
How?
What the fuck?
Even they're like, I don't know.
You know?
Kate's like, Kate's like, I didn't get the nod.
Kate's like, I didn't get the nod.
It's okay.
I get it.
I get it.
List are hard.
Isn't it?
You're obsessed.
Probably the same thing.
They never met Danny, you know, I don't know.
I'm not Danny again.
Danny, Danny, Danny.
The reason why I've never invited to any wedding.
I would have invited both of you guys to mine.
You guys would have been fun.
Oh, hell yeah.
Danny always says that.
Danny's like, I'm the reason you're never invited.
No, I know.
I was the same with the Bezos wedding.
Danny's like, no, it's because of me.
Because of his, because of him or like, like,
Danny's the fucking one of the great humans I know.
Tell me.
You know.
He's just not, he doesn't care.
He's not a social guy.
He's not social.
He's not into the whole thing.
I love that.
He doesn't like feel like he doesn't want to like perform for people or like love.
So then therefore people don't really get to know him.
And so Danny just fine finding someone, no one gets to know.
It would have been a thoughtful cut.
Right.
I would have been a thoughtful cut.
I'm not going to lie.
A thoughtful cut.
It could have like, is doing the list for the wedding is so brutal.
Like when I was doing my list, there's, you know how like some people where you're just like no.
And then you're like, oh God.
You're like, I hope I'm not that person ever on someone else's list where you're like,
how did you do it?
Like, did you have hard cuts where you're like, holy shit, I don't know what to do here?
Well, no, I'm brutal.
What was funny, though, is I was the person because the whole list and seating chart was like,
I mean, you would think we were like saving the world in a movie.
Like, I was like, this is ridiculous.
I had printed out this, like, huge sheet with everything.
And I was getting so annoyed that I just took it where my mom lives to this bar nearby.
And I like spread it out on the table and, like, ordered a drink.
and my mom and sister and husband,
well, future husband were there.
And I'm like, okay, guys.
I'm like, we need to discuss this right now, right here.
And they're like, okay, like, can we do this on the chart online?
I'm like, no.
I'm like, I need to, and I'm like writing it out.
And to this day, the bartender in there, he's like, remember when you brought your seating
chart in here?
I'm like, oh, do I.
It's a good one.
That's a good thing to do those.
Like, get everybody in the room.
Yeah.
So there's no more like, like, this is it.
Yeah.
We're doing it and it's done.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And then you have like one table that's just like the over the overflow table.
Like hey, what's up?
How are you?
My name's Oliver.
You know what we did.
Danny.
Hey, he's a Danny Oliver at the overflow.
By the way, the overflow table is always the best table.
Of course, always.
Like I've been at the overflow table and I'm like, love it here.
Wouldn't want to be anywhere else because it's too much pressure.
By the way, not a bad premise for like a fun movie.
It's called the overflow.
It's about the table at the wedding that is just all like rejects.
Like we're right above.
love the cut list.
Yeah, right about the exactly.
They just made it.
They're all up the same tail.
Well, I want to talk about books real quick because I've, I've texted you a couple
times.
I'm like,
what the fuck I'm going to read?
So I've always loved to read, but only in the last two and a half years I've become
like a voracious reader.
And Katie and I both have just like gone deep into it.
We talk about starting our own little.
Even though everyone has a book club, it's like the brother's sister thing to be fun.
There's never enough book club.
Can I just say that?
I think that, because especially now everyone's like this and this and this and what's better, what's cool?
I'm like, reading is cool period.
And there's never enough book clubs.
Do you have a book?
Do you have a book club?
Yeah.
I have a book club.
You do.
But you've also, you've produced a ton of books, right?
In the movies and TV shows.
I have a book club called Bellatrist.
Right.
I started at like eight years ago.
And it was, it was in earnest, like just on Instagram.
I really live to recommend.
You know this.
Like when I live to recommend, whether it's like books, restaurants, movies, TV shows.
like I just, I love being a concierge to my friends. So I started the book club with my best friend
Kara Price. We just like, we literally were reading books and we started posting it on my
personal Instagram and people were like, we noticed commenting on it so much. And we're like,
what if we started something with this and really like recommended things, but not like the New York
Times best sellers. Like, which love, but like everyone can get those. Like, why don't we recommend
more kind of niche like up and coming or like, you know, I don't know. We just, we wanted to like mix it up
a little bit. So we launched
and now we're a production company
and we had a show on Hulu called
Tell Me Lies. Tell Me Lies. Which just wrapped its third
and final season and that was so great.
No. It's really good. I love that.
I love that you love it. It's really, really good.
That was because Kara literally read this book
like on the beach and was like, you need to read this book
and it was not a new book.
And we just fell in love with it.
And our pitch was
at the time, we hadn't been in a relationship
that wasn't a thriller and why isn't that
depicted on TV as a genre?
relationship. And so that was kind of what sold that. And then we had got an amazing cast,
an amazing showrunner. And it really was like lightning in a bottle. And I got to watch. I've
only seen the first season. I got to watch the other two. I know. And that kind of had us
keep going into what we're doing now. And so we're awesome. What's going on? We're doing a show
called Calabasasus. That's based on a book called If You Live Here, you'd be famous by now.
Right. And I'm producing that with Kim Kardashian for Netflix. And I mean,
we both, she grew up in Calabasas.
I grew up part-time in Calabasas.
And so we were like, why isn't there a show a la like 902 or, you know, about Calabas?
So that's going to be really fun.
And then with Peacock, we're doing, you know, Brought Wars.
I know.
Oh, really?
Yes.
I mean, the IP, just taking the IP in now instead of two brides, it's kind of two dueling
wedding planners.
But that's like one of my favorite movies.
and I died for that movie
and my mom always said that I was very
you in that movie but in real life
she's like you are someone that would spoil
your own engagement and so it was just

I don't know.
Have you guys heard of faux journaling?
Yeah, it's reading.
It's called reading.
So we don't like to use that word anymore.
Okay.
A panel of New Yorker cartoonists.
Have you guys done Terry Gross's Peloton class?
No!
I've been dying too.
I'm so sorry.
I'm seeing a reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Audra McDonald's at the Wonderland Bookstore on 14.
That's crazy.
I went to the Wonderland Bookstore yesterday, and I heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark Thirteen.
No way.
You have to come to the last bookstore, though.

Middle School is a different world than the one we grew up in.
I'm Dr. Joy, and this is Therapy for Black Girls.
We spend real time on it in our surviving middle school run,
bringing in a child psychologist and a psychiatrist
who's raising two black girls of his own
to talk about what's really going on with our kids right now.
So it's literally physiological and neurological and psychological and psychological chaos
happening all this same time.
We got into group chats and gaming,
friendships and bullying,
and how to tell the difference
between healthy monitoring
and the kind of surveillance
that erodes trust.
There's belonging.
You could think of belonging as
I can be myself
and I can still be accepted.
And then there's fitting in.
Spitting in says,
I have to change who I am
in order to avoid rejection.
Then we turn the conversation
toward the fathers,
sitting down with therapist
Keer Gaines on Black fatherhood
and what it means to raise a daughter
through this stage.
You don't have on shorts, so you can't do flips.
You have on the dressy.
You have to cross your legs.
That's the range of this run, from screen time to identity to the father's doing the work at home.
You have to get off her device.
But the reality is there's a lot of life out there that we don't want you as your adults in their lives to miss out on.
This has been our surviving middle school run.
Brought to you by the people who spend their careers thinking about exactly this.
I'm Dr. Joy.
Listen to Therapy for Black Girls on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get
podcast. It's been a movie that my mom and I have loved and so it's so fun that we get so
fun. That's so great. That's so great. So you're reading. Obsessed. Excessive reading has led to
sort of producing some of these great books that you dig. I have this person that I love so much
in England. He's at Daunt Books in England. He's a friend of us. I love Donne books. He's a friend of
and he is one of the great like, like he's giving me so many wrecks. You gave me a great book by
him called Mr. Carew, which was fucking awesome.
I love how elevated your taste is from just starting to read two years ago.
You're like Claire Keegan.
I'm like, oh, my God.
Claire Keegan's great, by the way.
It's short.
And she loses, she's amazing.
But demon, demon, copperhead.
Yeah, Barbara Kingsolver.
Yeah, never read it.
But that's on my shelf.
You should read it now because her next book's coming out.
But it's like, it's such an interesting perspective in the way that she writes this character.
And it's like devastating as well.
Well, one of my biggest accomplishments, speaking of siblings is that,
that I, my sister, she would say, I hate reading.
I don't like to read.
And I'd be like, ah, I'm like, don't, please, no.
And I said, you do like to read.
You just haven't found a book you like to read.
So it was my mission for years, book, after book, after book, after book.
And I was like, I will not give up.
And like the stack would just get bigger.
And finally, the book that broke through was Daisy Jones and the six.
Oh, really?
In like a few days.
I've never read it.
And it was literally like, okay, what's next?
Same author of atmosphere.
is Taylor Jenkins read am I
Bouchering?
Yeah, that's it.
I don't know.
That's right.
And then she wrote
Atmospheres,
which I didn't read.
I didn't read atmosphere.
That was like the big book of last,
one of the big books of last year.
But Daisy Jones and the Six.
And I love that book,
but she loved it.
And then I started giving her like Stephanie Danler,
Joan Didion,
like kind of all these.
I want to read John Dinian.
It's, you know, no.
Oh, I would have brought a book,
a John Didien book for you.
Oh, wow.
too. I'll send you one.
Well, the year of magical thinking, right?
I have blue nights.
Blue nights, I think, might tear you to shreds.
I like crying.
I love crying.
Oh, well, a year of magical thinking, Oliver, I feel like you will like it will be.
It's spectacular.
One of the most devastating books I've ever read is a little life.
You read a little life.
You know, my sister's read it, and I haven't because I know I'm not ready.
I can't read it.
I'm not ready.
It is so gnarly.
I took it on a trip and read like the first thing.
And then I was talking to Nicole Ritchie, of all people.
And she was like, her and I always trade book recommendations.
Are you sure you're ready to read that book?
And I was like, what do you mean?
She was like, it's devastating.
And I was like, no, I can't read this right now.
It's hard.
It's hard.
What are you reading right now?
I'm reading this book called Lives of Saints.
And it's an older book.
And it's actually very New Orleans.
It takes place in New Orleans.
And it reminds me of a Joan Diddyan book called Run River, which is her first novel, which I loved.
And a little Great Gatsby.
Like it's kind of...
It's really great Gatsby is one of my favorite books.
I just reread it like two months ago.
That's what I did my English final one.
Yeah.
It was all of Great Gatsby.
I think so.
I'm going to say that I did.
She's so great.
I was a C plus student.
I would always get a C plus.
And I was stoked, by the way.
I was like, C plus.
Yeah, that's awesome.
Hey, the book you're reading right now.
It's ironic that it's the 13th season of American Horror Stories coming out,
and I filmed there 13 years ago,
and I'm having this weird, like, romance, renaissance with New Orleans.
And so this writer, she writes all these stories that take place in New Orleans,
and the one I'm reading Lives of Saints is, like, just about these kind of people.
Some of them are so deplorable, and some are romantic,
and it's just kind of this time in their life.
I love it.
Like, I read it out loud to myself in the bath by myself.
Isn't it?
Like, I'm a nerd.
I'm reading out loud with like my face mask on, like I've put my son to bed, just, like, loving my life.
Holly and I always say this, like, it's so frustrating because you walk into a bookstore and you're like, I just want to all of it.
I want to read all of it.
It's overwhelming.
And you're never going to get to read all of it.
Do you know that I think about that sometimes where I'm like, I'll never get to read all the books I want?
And that brings me to my niece.
It's like, I can't read all these books.
When you find, I always say like, and I say this to my kids too, it's the same thing because riders now just.
starting to read more. Bing is actually
read, likes to read.
Like Bing just read Slaughterhouse Five.
Come on. Yes, Bing. It was cool.
It was great. It's really great.
Okay, Bing. It's cool.
Bing's book club. I'll join that one.
That's good. Then he just read something on
like quantum physics. I was like, okay, I got a reader.
This sounds like my kind of book club.
Yeah.
He's probably lying.
I'm like, he's an excellent reader.
Like he's a liar.
But yeah, it's just that thing
you want your kids to like get lost in the world of books.
If you are going to tell somebody like someone who's like,
well, what should I read if I love, you know, like to get into reading?
If you were to say someone like, okay, what's like a good digestible book for someone to start
with if they're like, I really want to just a girl?
I'll give you two books.
One is a novel that I read on one plane ride and literally was crying after.
the light we lost by Jill Santa Polo.
I feel like it's such a quick read.
It's romantic.
It's readable.
And the ending, just I had such a great, ugly cry.
Love that.
And then I would say nonfiction is this book called
A Field Guide to Getting Lost by Rebecca Solnit.
And you just talked about longing.
And in it, she talks about longing.
And in the book, I think she quotes Robert Haas, the poet.
And she's like longing because desire is full of endless distance.
And like that, I remember I wrote that down and, like, had it in my planner for like an entire year.
And I thought that was so romantic.
And she writes in this like vignette kind of way where it almost like inspires you to want to write.
And so I feel like that's like a fun.
Oh, fun.
You should read that.
I'm going to send you guys books after.
I love it.
Did you read the correspondent?
You know what?
That's on my nightstand.
And everyone's telling me to read it.
Literally was looking at that this morning.
That's so weird.
No.
I'm sitting on my desk.
It's very good.
It's different and cool.
It's good.
Okay, should we start, should we read that next?
Okay, we should read that next.
Start your book club.
I'm into this.
I really think we should start a book club because it would be really fun.
But I also...
Who make money on?
There's no money on you.
You know what they say.
There's a lot of money in books.
That's what they say about publishing.
They're like, there's so much money in the written word.
Yes.
Okay, wait, we're running out of time.
We digress.
I'll be back for your book club.
Let's talk about American Horror Story.
It's 13.
13.
airs Thursdays.
This season is like truly for the fans.
Ryan has brought back every hit that ever was and has created new hits, dare I say.
And it airs September 24th at 9 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. I was about to say specific.
I'm so bad at 5 p.m. specific.
ESPN.
Specifically 6 p.m.
But September 24th.
Specific.
This is on 6 o'clock ESPN.
You guys, help me help you.
Help me.
We're dropping, we.
They're dropping three episodes.
We're dropping three episodes.
September 24, three episodes.
Fun.
And then after that, is it week by week?
It's week by week, but it's like three episodes the next week and then two episodes every week until 13.
13 is its own week.
So it's really fun how they're releasing them this year.
And like I said, it's every character you've ever loved from any season might be back.
I mean, I don't know.
And do you love doing it?
I love doing it.
I love it. I mean, I also, to get to reprise a role that I played 13 years ago that when I said, when I finished it, I was like, oh, that was fun. I wish I could do it again and then to have gotten to do it again and again and that people still like it. You know how that is when people still love something you did.
So fun. You know, it feels good. So it's characters that we've seen in the different American horror stories who are sort of come together. I play one character. But other people play. What about Paulson?
Paulson plays, I don't know how she does it. She plays a lot of characters.
She does. She plays a lot of characters. She's a lot of hits. We have so much fun with her. She's my most fun. She gave her my head. Golden Glove. The Golden Glove. One of the awards was for her. We had. Her sister like her sister like. Her sister was like, I don't know. She's like, she was going to do great things. I'm like, what keeps telling me? It's true. She was saying, you're going to do great. Maybe you should write a book.
You're like, Sarah, I need this. Why do you write a book?
Hello?
Listen, don't get me started.
Why don't you have a book?
I've already, I've already, it's called Sensitive Stoner.
Sensitive Stoner is a good name for the book.
Oliver and I have already, we're, I already wrote a chapter and you.
Okay.
Haven't.
I have an idea for a book.
All right.
Well.
For both of us.
Okay.
Ready?
Yes.
We're going to do.
We're going to end with our speed round.
Okay.
This is actually good.
God.
Okay.
Who's he picking?
Joan Didian or Patty Smith?
Joan Didian.
Oh, poor bad
Rebecca or the Great Gatsby
Oh, you're evil
Rebecca
Okay, shining or Rosemary's baby
Oh, look or movie
Right now they're both amazing
The Shining, sorry
The Shining, sorry
Nancy Drew or Shrew locked home
Oh, well Nancy Drew
Of course, I could answer that for her
Best book for a cathartic ugly cry
You just said it
The Light We Lost or
I mean,
you're of magical thinking,
Joan Didnian.
Yeah.
Is it a cry book?
Yes.
Okay.
You're ready?
Because it's about her husband?
Yes.
But Blue Knights makes me cry more
because it's like a mother-daughter story
and I'm so close with my mom.
So like that book destroyed me.
I read it on a plane and I was literally like sitting next to a stranger and I was like,
like out the window just like this.
I love ugly crying so much.
I love crying from a book more than anything else.
Me too.
Like when I cry after reading.
it is because I'm reading and I'm like put it down like this and also yeah yeah oh my god
shit is how you look like when you cry yeah well like wait did you finish demon copperhead
I don't know I'm in the middle of it oh I know oh my god I had to sit I had to sit for like an hour
a little life it was multiple times I'm just like I don't know how to do it I also just heard
a script that made me do that I love that really and I read it and then I was like oh I have to
make this this movie okay sexiest book of all time
Sexiest?
Oh, God.
Sexy book.
What's a sexy book?
What is the sexy?
Like VI.
Nine and a half weeks.
Ooh, Lolita.
You said nine and a half weeks.
That is so funny.
Oh my God, sexy book.
I just found what I think is sexy as how what other people think is sexy.
Like, I'm like, let's say something's so lame.
And that's a tough one.
That's a tough question.
I like it, though.
I'm like, I'm like Twilight.
Twilight.
The Twilight series.
Okay.
That's good.
Sexiest character of all time.
I mean...
Book-wise.
Well, Wuthering Heights.
Come on.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like, I was contemplating
getting Heathcliff tattooed on my body.
Yeah.
And I kind of...
I still might.
Yeah.
Number one fictional character
in a book you'd want to hang out with.
Can it be non-fictional?
Yeah.
I mean, Eve Babbitts.
Like, I love her writing,
and I would love to hang out with her in L.A.
in, like, the 60s.
I mean, that would be fun.
Uh-huh.
Do you disagree or do you not know who it is?
I don't know what it is.
I was like, you either don't know who it is.
No, you bet it.
You want to star in the movie version, but it can also have been made.
Oh, it can also.
Like, if you would, like, what is the character?
I'm like, you're getting nicer now.
I would say The Shining.
I love that book.
Shelly Duvall.
And I love that movie.
But the Shelley DeVall character in the book is so much more interesting.
And I've always wanted to do like a,
a limited series of like the Shining from her perspective.
Oh my God.
So that would be my dream to do.
So like my dreams.
Stephen King,
if you're listening,
that's my dream.
That's a great fucking idea.
And I was just in Vancouver working and I put the shining on because it's one of
my favorite movies.
And it's so fucking good.
And the opening shot of that movie in the time that it was made,
his helicopter shot of jack driving up the thing.
You're like, dude, there's no drones.
There's no nothing.
And it was just, I mean,
he was truly one of the great.
of directors of all fucking time.
You gotta read the book though because I have never read the book.
I, when I read it, I was like blown, blown away.
Yeah.
I mean, it's fantastic.
But yeah, so I love and the mom character in it, you know, she also has the shine in the book.
Oh, she died.
Sorry, guys.
Oh, my God, that's a good biggest spoiler.
They allude to that.
Sorry.
You can cut that.
Yeah.
But they allude to it.
And that really inspired me.
She was amazing.
She was amazing.
I love her.
sigh. You're like, kill her. She's killer. She's so annoying. I'm like, I don't know if that
was my takeaway, but yes. I guarantee that's why Kubrick passed her. He said murder her.
Like, what? I guarantee. Kubrick was like, oh, she's perfect. You're like, kill her.
I love her. I know she's the best. I, I, I love, I. If you are going to write a book,
yes. What genre is that book going to be? You know, not non-fiction. You're not allowed to do
nonfiction. Okay. You can't do a nonfiction.
I've been
lately writing poetry.
So I would write a book of poetry.
I love it.
We love you. I love you. I love you.
I love you. I love you. I feel like a poetry book is going to be published
soon. I don't know. I haven't shared
it with anyone. I've like only read a couple to people
and I'm like, I won't email them. I'll just read them off my phone.
Who's your favorite poet? Live readings.
I mean, probably Louise Gluck,
I would say.
Louise Gluck is my favorite.
LG.
LG, baby.
LG.
All right, let's rock.
Love you guys.
Thank you for having me.
Okay.
All right.
Oliver, how well were you listening?
There she goes.
How well were you listening?
I was listening.
Where did she get married?
She got married in Sun Valley, Idaho.
What's her favorite book?
What is the name of the book that she would recommend to somebody?
Oh, I don't know.
Like, like, oh, like the,
way we were
there were so many book titles
being thrown
thrown around
you just got so ADD
I thought about that I'm like Oliver's not remember
any of them no there are too many book titles
and like half of them like oh yeah
like fucking yeah
okay who's her favorite poet
LG
Lawrence Gibbs
Lawrence Gibbs
I knew you wouldn't even
How many?
She's saying that.
I knew you had no idea.
And I was like, I'll heal the L.G.
No idea.
She's not.
But here's what I'm going to say.
That was the best.
She's the best.
She's the best.
And I love that they've been doing that show for so long.
Oh, I know.
And it's so fun.
And she's,
that was great.
What season?
What season?
What season?
