In late 2025, CAFMA crews responded to reports of smoke coming from a backyard shed in Prescott Valley.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a small structure filled with smoke and discovered that a reptile heat lamp had fallen onto bedding,
causing it to smolder. Acting quickly, the crew carefully removed Littlefoot, a pet tortoise,
and extinguished the smoldering materials before securing the shed to prevent further hazards.
Later that evening, firefighters checked on Littlefoot, who was reported to be doing well.
Using heat lamps outdoors exposes them to wind, rain, and temperature fluctuations,
which can create serious fire and electrical hazards and make it difficult to maintain a safe,
stable environment for your pet.
Kauffma emphasizes pet owner safety and offers these key
tips for indoor heat lamp use. Secure mounting, use chains and secure hangers to prevent tipping.
Distance, keep lamps at least 18 to 20 inches from bedding and other combustibles.
Protective cages, choose lamps with heavy-duty metal guards or cages to prevent pets from coming
into contact with the bulb. Inspect regularly, before each use, examine cords for fraying,
bulbs for cracks, and connections to ensure they are secure. No extension cords, plug directly into the wall,
Extension cords pose tripping and fire hazards.
Fire safety, keep a fire extinguisher nearby and have a fire escape plan, as heat lamps pose a fire risk.
Bulbs and wattage, select a bulb with the correct wattage for the size of the enclosure and consider using high-quality infrared bulbs.
Ventilation, ensure good airflow and avoid using in very small, enclosed spaces.
Littlefoot's rescue is a great reminder for all pet owners to inspect their heating devices and use them safely, said Darrell Turpick,
Kafma Fire Marshal. By following these safety steps, you can prevent fires and protect your animals.
We are grateful the incident had a positive outcome. Residents are also reminded,
if you see smoke or flames, call 911 immediately. Learn more about fire safety at www.
