Barbara Nelson, founder and president of the recently renamed Trail Art Project,
is thrilled to announce that Prescott's Civic Enhancement Committee unanimously voted today to recommend.
After the recently imposed 60-day public comment period, the city except Gene Galizan's
three-horse sculpture donation.
The committee thoroughly considered the Galizan offer, carefully examining every issue involved.
applying each of the newly revised public art donation policy elements,
recognizing that this donation will be cited in a suitable location on a berm adjacent to the horse
trailer parking lot at the Pevine Trailhead, and acknowledging that the proposed donation is
consistent with the Western culture in Prescott, the committee voted 5 to 0 to recommend the
city accept the donation.
Gene Galizan himself answered committee questions and assured the committee that as to safety,
any sharp edges would be blunted and that he wants the trio to be safe for the public.
He confirmed that although appearing similar to those located outside the Fippin Museum and on Glassford Hill, each of his horses is unique.
Joe Baines, the Parks and Rec Director, informed the committee of maintenance issues that the same rust was delaying,
although the found objects the horses are made of are already to some extent rusted, and that is one of their features.
Anti-graffiti applications already in use on other outdoor city objects would be employed.
About the artist, Gene Galazan.
Moving from Wisconsin to Arizona in 1995, Jean fell in love with horses and noticed that found
objects might be put together in the form of full-sized metal horses. He has been creating
art since the 1960s and created these unique objects over an 11-year period. He wants to see
these horses, that may well be his last sculptures of that kind, grazing in Prescott at the
Peavine on the berm adjacent to the horse trailer parking area. Catch up with more local news
