Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, everybody. Welcome back to Signal's News podcast. Today, I'm Dylan Nordby, and you are the owner of Prescott Epoxy. Tell us a little bit about your business, because you kind of wear two hats. You do the epoxy and the painting, right? Yes, so I'm the owner of Prescott epoxy and finishing touch painting. We started in 2019 with a vision for bringing a high-quality job to homeowners throughout Prescott and standing behind something that's going to last a long time. quality products and most importantly, good service, because like that's the big thing that separates like a good job from a not good job is like the follow through, the communication, all of that. So we started finishing touch painting in 2019. And several years later, we opened up Prescott epoxy officially in 2024. We separate our two businesses just to position ourselves as floor coding experts, not just painters who come in and do your fire. Who dabble in flooring. But looking at your website, flooring is kind of gives you an opportunity to be a little adventurous, right? Because I mean, the colors I'm seeing, a lot of times homes are, you know, you kind of, a lot of people do a lot of
Starting point is 00:01:15 the neutrals. But the flooring looks like people are getting a little crazy with those. Yeah, there's just so many different applications that you can apply with coatings to concrete. So not only do you have, have your traditional flake epoxy floor. There's also different metallic options. There's stain in seals. There's overlays we can do. And it's really interesting. It just depends on like what your vision is for your space,
Starting point is 00:01:40 what your budget is. And then the condition of the surface. And then with those three things, that's how we help tailor each project to each job to make sure that it's going to be a good fit long term. Yeah, I'm seeing like you don't have to just go with one color. This looks like almost the ocean, but then you've got blues and really pretty, really, really pretty. So with homes, like right now we're going into fall, winter, things are getting a little more chilly out there.
Starting point is 00:02:07 We had a nice hot summer. So I'm glad to see this finally going away. But is now the time to start painting or like to do exterior or does the weather really affect what you should be doing right now? Yeah. I mean, now is definitely the time to do exterior painting when. the winter rolls around and colder temperatures come with that. It makes a little bit more difficult to paint outside and stay within manufacturer guidelines. So I would say like late summer falls the perfect time to get your house painted while it's still warm,
Starting point is 00:02:42 but before we start seeing those winter weather coming through. Now is it still okay to do an epoxy floor or do interior during the winter? Does that hold up okay? Oh yeah, we do tons of interior painting. during the winter and then garage floors. We can do those all year round. We're not quite as temperature sensitive there. It's a different type of product and it cures down very low temperature.
Starting point is 00:03:09 So we can do those year round. Do you notice homeowners going, you know, I'm getting ready to sell? Is house painting kind of top of their list to help with resale value? Paint can really elevate your home and take it from something that looks just okay. is something that looks really good. Depending on the condition of like different surfaces in your home, maybe the trim's a little bit scuffed. Maybe the walls are a little bit faded or there's some nail holes or the garage paint
Starting point is 00:03:38 is really like marred up from all the storage over the years. Sometimes freshening it up, making those surfaces look nice and clean and moving ready can make a really big impact on a homeowner or a future homeowner coming in to look at a house. Because the last thing you want to do is get moved. in because you're excited to move in and then it's like okay now we need to move everything out of the way paint get stuff going is there a colors um are there colors that could actually hurt the resell value of a home there are um neutral colors are always good on an exterior of a home just because like um they're very common and they look very nice they blend in with like the landscape
Starting point is 00:04:21 of prescott interiors of homes lighter colors are definitely better I would definitely stay away from dark colors inside or very vibrant colors inside or outside. Yeah, because you might like them, but you know, you're going to have to find that just that right person and you're trying to sell your house. Exactly. Has there, what's the worst color you've ever painted a house? So we did an avocado green exterior trim with some lighter green stucco on a really nice house in Prescott. And you can only like, we tried to tell the customers, this might not be a great idea.
Starting point is 00:04:57 But ultimately, it's their home. It's their decision to make. And unfortunately, for them, we did end up going back and repainting it to a different color that where the colors were approved by the community. Yeah, I was going to say because even if you don't have an HOA, your neighbors are going to be like, dude, you've got to, how bad did it look?
Starting point is 00:05:20 Is it so bad? Yeah, it was bad. stuck out. It stuck out like a sore thumb, honestly. Like guacamole. That's terrible. So I'm going to ask a couple of questions about kind of what you're seeing with the trends. So accent walls, people still doing them? We see them from time to time, but not as often as we have in years past. Good, because I never knew how to do that. It's like, what accent wall? What color did you do? But so not so much anymore. In lieu of accent walls, we've been seeing a lot of homeowners decorate with like colored furniture, wall hangings, things like that, like the flooring color, kind of just bring some color to the
Starting point is 00:06:00 space, not with the wall colors as much anymore, but with furnishings. Awesome. And then our homeowners, and please say no, but I've got a feeling you're going to say yes, are people moving away from gray interior? Yes, we are. How come everybody painted there? My walls are gray. I know so many people, When did that become a trend? I don't remember. I think it was probably like five to seven years ago. It started becoming a trend. COVID.
Starting point is 00:06:28 COVID definitely had a part to play in that. It's just a trendy color at the time. And we've gone through phases historically. Like I remember growing up, my grandma had a yellow kitchen. And those are very popular. With the fork and spoon on the walls. Exactly. We just go through those trends.
Starting point is 00:06:46 So it's time to repaint. Yes. Okay, and when I asked to have you come out and paint my house, do we do mat, satin, or eggshell? Like, what's the most popular right now? We always recommend at least a satin sheen on the exterior of a home. And then if you're painting inside, majority of the walls are going eggshell these days where it's going to have a little bit of sheen to make it easier to clean, but it's not going
Starting point is 00:07:09 to be super shiny where it's going to reflect too much light off of it either. Okay. So is Matt harder to keep clean? Yes, the flat and mat sheens are definitely harder to keep clean. They don't reflect as much light. So they're actually like preferred by new builders because they're easier to touch up. But actually like the eggshell is what really holds up and makes it easier to clean long term. And then can fresh paint really increase a home value by like 10 grand?
Starting point is 00:07:42 I saw somewhere like 5%. Yeah, it definitely can, especially if, um, The surfaces are due to be coated and on exteriors of homes. Like, we want the houses to look good, but a homeowner coming in, they're going to look at, is this house protected? Does it look nice? And that's really the main job of the paint is to protect the surface and then also make it look good. So having a nice protected house that's like ready for the next homeowner is really important.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Yeah, I've also heard like the front door is important to have like a really nice front door or vibrant color or something that's, is that something that you've noticed with people that are trying to resell or just fix up their home? Yeah, it definitely is. One of our most requested items to paint on houses that are soon to be sold is going to be the front of the house just because it's the first thing that you see when you walk up and also the front door because like you're going in and out of the front door all the time.
Starting point is 00:08:40 It's probably got like some marks on it, maybe faded a little bit. and just having everything look nice with being the first thing that you see as you come up is really important. Do you do kitchen cabinets? Yes, we do. Because what color are my cabinets? Not white. What color do I want them to be?
Starting point is 00:08:59 Bright white with black fixtures. Is that stain or is that going away? Are people still doing white kitchens? White kitchens are still very popular and I think they will be for a long time. It's one of those classic colors. Yeah, you really can't go wrong with white. I love it. I really do.
Starting point is 00:09:16 But it's scary because my husband was a finished carpenter. He's like, I could do those. But how long, how long is it going to take? We're going to be living out of cardboard boxes for a while, not being able to cook in our kitchen. Yeah. That's a big job, huh? It is a big job. And it's more prep work than anything.
Starting point is 00:09:33 And it'll take our crew probably like a week from start to finish. Your crew a week. Yeah. So my husband on part time, we're looking at what, seven years? Yeah. Probably. You might think it'll be done in a couple. days. That's why I tell my wife, it's easy. I'll get it done right away. And then six months later,
Starting point is 00:09:51 is it done yet? Is it done yet? It's like, no, go back to Burger King, grow up with some more burgers because we're not kidding. Not being able to cook in here. If I had one option, paint or epoxy for a quick resell, which one's going to make the biggest difference? That's a hard question to answer. It would depend on if there was anything that like really needed done. If there was like, like we were talking about the front door or the front of a house, like if that was looking like not so great, I would suggest doing that first or if not, everything's in pretty good condition. A garage floor can really be something that elevates a home versus another one when home buyers are looking at that. And can you only epoxy garage floors
Starting point is 00:10:36 or do you see people epoxy and other stuff? So we do garage floors. We do driveways patios. We have quart sand finishes for that so it's extremely non-slip. Oh, perfect. You could also do stain systems so we can stain and then seal concrete and give it a nice high-end finish. And also commercial work as well, like concrete polishing, all of that. And then when you're painting a house, do you take into, you know, it's hot, it's high climate, you know, we're higher elevation.
Starting point is 00:11:09 Does that make a difference than if you're painting a home in the valley or? No, I mean, in the summer, like in the warmer temperatures, we like to work in the shade. Yep. If it's colder, we like to work in the sun. We just want to make sure that our products have enough time, that we have enough time to work with them and that they have enough time to dry within the windows that they need to. So we like to use the weather, the sun, all of that to our advantage. Do you have to use a special paint where, you know, California versus Arizona versus Florida? Is it different type of paint that you would use for your home?
Starting point is 00:11:45 Or is it really just a good quality paint? I wouldn't say a different type of paint. Just maybe a different brand of paint from a manufacturer. Like if we use Sherman Williams paints down in Phoenix, there's not quite as much elevation there. So up in Prescott here where we're at 5,000 feet plus with moisture, we need a good paint that's going to last a long time. So probably more often up here than down in the valley,
Starting point is 00:12:09 we're recommending premium high-end paint options just because they will give that extra lifespan to a job. So instead of like a seven-year Prescott paint job, it might be 10 or more with like two coats of a really good high-quality paint. Yeah. It's time to repaint my house. It's time to repaint my kitchen. I need epoxy flooring.
