Hey, everybody. Welcome back to Signals News podcast. Today I have Caleb Dermert. I've spent a few minutes trying to figure out exactly how to pronounce his last name. But you are the man behind Miracle Man plumbing.
That's right.
Yep. Tell us all about what you do and why you do it.
So I'm a plumber. I've been plumbing for nearly eight years. Miracle Man plumbing was established in 2005 by my dad.
we're all from California, just like everyone else's.
Maybe we'll cut that out.
No, I always make fun of that because everybody's from, but mostly everybody,
what part from, what part of California?
Orange County, yeah.
Yeah, I'm from Glendora, so.
There you go.
But lived here so long that I'm basically native.
Yeah, we don't even really say that anymore.
We don't even, yeah.
But sometimes it's a bonus when you've been trained in different areas and you know what
you're looking out for. That's right. So anyways, yeah, we've been established here since 2005
serving the Quad City area. I took over the business nearly four years ago. It'll be four years in
September. I would say I didn't necessarily choose the plumbing life. The plumbing life chose me.
In a way. So I'm assuming, you got to be honest, summer's kind of sucked, right? Like you're
You just want to play video games.
I want to go hang out with your friends.
And dad's like, Caleb, come on.
Oh, yeah.
This is your job now.
Yeah, I mean, I think what really turned me off the most of plumbing at a young age was going underneath crawl spaces.
And, you know, your dad wasn't doing it.
Yeah, well, he wasn't doing it whenever I was there.
But, you know, there's cobwebs.
There's dead animals.
It's dark.
It's moist.
It smells funny.
Caleb, you got this?
Yeah.
Yeah, I know.
He's just kind of back there, a cheerleader.
You got it.
It's okay. Nope. Pay no attention. If it moves, just try to run away from it. It's all right.
Yeah, pretty much. Sometimes I felt like Lord of the Rings under there, getting to Mortor.
And that's just been exaggerative, but that's kind of how it felt as a kid. And I didn't really, you know, I really did look for other options outside of plumbing.
It's not glamorous, Caleb.
It's not glamorous. And you know what's interesting, too, is people say that plumbers make good money.
And I think that's halfway true.
You know, I think if you think about it for face, well, if you look at face value, maybe we do make good decent money.
It's a trade, right?
Yeah, it's a trade.
Yep.
Maybe we make decent money compared to relative or other industries, maybe fast food or whatever.
Yes, we do make more than, you know, the minimum wage workers.
But, you know, we work hard, you know.
And we're also in a field where we also deal with angry customers.
No one is happy when they call the plumber.
No one's happy.
We're the bear of bad news.
We also have to deal with health problems.
Every day in the field, we get exposed to things that can give us, it can cause.
It can be sometimes be very life-threatening, but most of the time it can be small, minor,
but you can get diseases.
And just long-term stuff too, like on your joints, your back.
So it costs you, too, in a way, being in the trades.
And I think there's no doubt about it.
And it's one of those things like with trades, it's, you know, with AI kind of taking over everything.
It is one of those things, you know, plumbers, carpenters, electricians.
Your jobs are safe for a very long time.
It's going to be a long time before we have, you know, a robot,
coming out to change a toilet or unclog your drains.
I would assume with it being as dangerous in a word and little toxic, messy, you have to love
what you're doing in a sense that what you're doing for these customers and, you know,
especially being a family business, for you to step in and take it over after some pretty
messy summers to be able to say, okay, I'm going to do this.
what do your customers mean to you?
So, you know, I think customers is a little bit of a dirty word when I hear that, you know,
because whenever I think about that, it feels like a transaction.
We're in a community with people that we live in that need a service that we provide.
And we try to make it seem like that versus just a transaction where you call a contractor
and you're expecting a bill and maybe expecting your house to get dirty or maybe even get taken
advantage of.
We're really trying to change things up with Miracle Man plumbing by making it feel like a
relationship rather than a transaction, being able to establish a connection that you can
call us and ask us questions.
You can trust us.
that's what that's what it means being a customer to us is it's it really is a two-way street we want
to be able to trust our customers as well in our community and vice versa what i you said
something earlier to me that you know we were chatting and it was if you wouldn't recommend it to
your grandma don't do it here yeah um i mean that's a basic principle um and i think for face value
when you hear something like that, it's like, okay, don't go over the top.
Don't charge too much.
And while that is true, there's a little bit more of a deeper meaning to that.
Personally, as a plumber, a professional tradesman, my job is to be as thorough as possible.
And it's not to take easy way out, not to say I'm not throwing shade on any other plumbers,
but it can be tempting sometimes for multiple different reasons if the customer's in a pinch.
If maybe the job is hard and we don't feel like doing it.
Maybe it's Friday at 2 o'clock and you're trying to get out of town or something.
And I'm missing dinner with my wife.
You know, it can be hard and frustrating.
But to me, though, that so don't, not recommending things that you want to recommend
your grandma also means serving them to the best you possibly can. And that means giving them
all the options that they can have, whether that's a basic repair, a small investment or a large
investment in their plumbing system. Some people aren't ready to make that large investment.
So that's why we're always offering options. So that way they have that full control to make
whatever decision they want with their plumbing. And with the grandma, you know, she's not checking
underneath her sinks. She's not going out to her garage and checking your water. I'm a grandma. I'm not doing it.
I'm not going to do it. Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, we have to be mindful of that. Sometimes it can feel
a little invasive too. Like, man, I don't want to go check out their personal stuff. But, you know,
really our job is plumbing. You're literally the guy looking under my cabinets, which is, you know,
not all of us are super organized down there. Hey, and that's all right. If you have stuff underneath your
cabinets, don't worry about it. We'll work around it.
So we've established that no one wants to call you because normally it is an issue.
So, and I shouldn't say not want to call you. It's the plumber in general or the handyman, anybody.
But, you know, I was talking to a garage door gal the other day and she's like, oh, you should be having your stuff maintenance every six months.
And I was like, oh my gosh, I'm like 12 maintenance is behind.
Same here.
And, yeah, I was like, who knew?
And then you, you know, your gutter guy, you should be doing this every so many months.
And I was like, who knew?
Tell me about plumbing because I'm, we bought a house about five years ago.
So I'm like, I'm probably way behind on something with you guys too.
So yeah.
If there's not a problem, should I still be calling you?
Yeah, I definitely would.
So Miracle Man plumbing, for one starters, we offer free estimates and free plumbing diagnostics.
That's not a way for us to do like a bait and switch.
It's us offering our customers a free ticket to build a relationship with us as a contractor.
And lots of times we go into homes and their plumbing's fine.
And we end up walking out with a more educated customer that we have a great relationship with,
that they're going to call us whenever they do need plumbing done.
But to kind of go over general maintenance in your plumbing system,
I like to kind of start a little bit further back with what starts plumbing problems.
If you have like a shower cartridge or like a faucet cartridge on the shelf of a supply house,
it's going to be good for 10 years, most likely, you know, if it's packaged right and depending on the cartridge.
If it's in a plumbing system, it's going to have a lot more of a shorter life.
And the reason for that is, you know, it's being used.
and something that can accelerate the damage of that as well is hard water.
It's the minerals and the water.
A lot of the area here has hard water.
Some of it doesn't.
And kind of some facts is we have over 15 different wells here located in Preska Valley.
Not all of them have the same hardness levels and also organic and inorganic chemicals in the water.
So depending on which well you're on, you're going to have different types of water.
So with that being said, you have water as an element that, you know, it damages your plumbing over time.
So the biggest thing that you can do, I would say for a frontline connection is having a water softener.
It really does give you a long-term investment on your plumbing.
there's data and statistics that a water softener can pay for itself in as little as three to five years.
Do you guys install those?
Yes, we do.
Awesome.
Yeah, we get free quotes on those.
We also offer free water test.
So we can test the hardness of your water.
It's like a little lab experiment in your kitchen.
We also do other tests as well for your water to see what else can be treated.
Trust me, if you live here, you have hard water.
Yeah.
Yeah, most of the time you have hard water.
All those nice little calcium deposits everywhere.
You see them that anytime they, we've got one little leak right now, which I'm going to need to call you for because I'm like, look, you can see where it starts kind of discoloring stuff because the water is, it's just so, so hard.
Yeah.
And so you have, you have treating your water that is going to really help extend the life of your plumbing.
And then also a pressure regulator.
Some area, not all areas here in the valley are over 80 pounds.
of pressure, but making sure that it's not over that, because that will also accelerate damage
on your plumbing. So making sure that you have a pressure regulator and your pressure is tested,
if you do have one, we can still come out and test it and make sure.
How do I know?
You know, that's a great question. Yeah. So call us out and let us figure that out. Let us take
away that headache and that stress. I think it's smart if you buy a new home or you've even
lived there a few years and these are things you don't think about. Because either
our parents did it for us or the landlord did it for us and now it's our responsibility.
And again, my garage door is probably going to fall off the hinges one day.
I don't even know.
And then I haven't had, I don't, this isn't making me nervous because we had a water softener.
And then we had a whole bunch of trouble with, I'll get into all this later, but it was a mess.
But we disconnected the water softener because we were having so many.
So now I'm like, oh, shoot, we should probably talk to somebody because there was a reason it was there to begin with.
So, so.
Well, there's that.
And I'd also like to add, with water heaters as well, you know, that's probably one of a lot.
That's probably the most common larger plumbing systems in a person's home that they should
maintenance and they also should look into.
So water heaters, water heater manufacturer specs recommend that you flush your water heater
once a year.
I personally recommend as a plumber, if you don't have a water soft.
to do it twice a year.
How that helps is that helps keep sediment and also mineral buildup inside of your tank
from building up and causing damage to the tank.
And then so there's that.
And then there's also a couple other pieces on your water heater like the expansion tank.
Those can have shorter lifespans to mid to longer,
just depending on how they're installed and maintenance.
But those you don't know they've failed into.
until you check them.
There's a bladder inside of it.
And if that bladder fails,
then it's basically like a pillow for your water heater.
And it's to help take away that pressure from the water heater tank.
So that's something that should be checked as well.
And then also there's a thing that's on your water heater.
It's called the temperature pressure relief valve.
And manufacture specs recommend you have that tested every,
two years to make sure that.
Great.
I'm about three times behind that now.
Yeah.
That's all good.
You know, I'll finish with what it does, but it basically relieves the pressure from your water heater.
If your water heater gets too hot, it has a place to have that pressure to relief.
So that's something you want checked as well.
And I want to acknowledge that, you know, don't feel bad.
If you haven't, if you've neglected your plumbing system, it's all good.
I've neglected everything, Caleb.
I need help.
That's all good.
That's what we're here for.
It's not going to judge.
Yeah, that's not judging us.
Yeah, we're not judging us.
That's what we're here for, is to educate and to also make all this a pain-free, stress-free experience.
And like I said, it's okay that you, if you're listening and you're thinking about,
man, I haven't maintenance my water heater.
I'm not even sure if I want to call them.
That's okay. What our goal is is to actually give you a better investment with your money.
Instead of your water heater not lasting as long as it could, getting that to last longer.
Replacing some of these parts and some of the maintenance that's needed in a water heater will actually give you a longer term better investment in your money and in your home.
And can also help prevent, you know, early failures.
and water damage.
I was telling you before, on average, and this can vary from home to, you know, in class,
but usually most water damage cases are between 3,000 and 15,000.
So it can be, it might not be as much and it can be a lot.
But just proper maintenance on your system can help keep you ahead on that.
That's awesome, because I was going to say, I was looking in my note to roll.
quick. We had Mitch from Get Right mitigation in a few weeks ago, and he was talking about, you know,
people go out of town and didn't realize they had a leak in their water heater. They didn't realize,
you know, there was a slow leak behind the sink or the dishwasher or even the ice winker in
their refrigerator and they come home to standing water and the thousands of dollars worth
of, you know, time and money that it takes to get that going.
And to keep that, have they called you?
And we could have caught that ahead of time or, or, you know,
grandma's on getting down there to check under the sink.
But notices there's a puddle, but it could have just been,
I spilled something.
Right.
And then, yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, no, it can definitely be a headache.
And we actually regularly practice empathy with our customers because everyone has a different.
experience and perspective.
Sometimes it can be hard because we think we, you know, we know what they're thinking and
we understand them.
But truly, I think the right answer is we don't.
So I like to be empathetic with our customers and I'll tell them I can't possibly
understand what you might be going through.
Because it really is, you know, some people, maybe it's their finances.
Maybe they're in between jobs.
Maybe they're going through personal problems.
And we don't know that.
We don't know what somebody's going through in their personal life.
So, you know, treating each other like humans is our goal.
That's awesome.
Yeah, because it is, you know, when you've let something go so long, then it's like,
I don't want to call anybody.
But, you know, I didn't, we didn't have the money to, you know, hire professionals.
So we've done all these little fixes that have now become a bigger problem.
So if somebody would like to call you, because, I mean, it's just to find someone,
you can trust and to, you know, and especially to be in business as long as you have and
for your dad to, you know, trust you to hand the reins over. I think you're a good guy to
call. So I see that on your website, which is super easy, miracleman plumbing.compet.
Free quote. So if you just want, you can just fill it out, you know, you have to talk to
them. You just leave a note on the door. Caleb, you know why you're here. Go check out that faucet.
Yep. What's a, do you have a phone number they can contact as well?
Yeah, so you can call us at 928 8303575.
You can find us on Google.
We just started, we kind of relaunched our social media, so we're also on Instagram and Facebook.
We showcase a lot of our work.
You can also find a lot of our reviews online.
Lots of great reviews.
And that's, yeah, that's what we strive for.
And one thing I like to do is because, you know, we do have some one stars.
And, you know, any growing business, they're always, I think.
think there always will be to a certain extent some one-stars. But I like to personally
have a conversation with every single person that ended up leaving us a one-star review.
Ultimately, it's my goal to, it's my reputation. It's this business is another,
I have a baby, but it's also my baby in this community. I want nothing more to be in good
standing with our customers. I don't care money. I don't care about a headache.
whatever we need to do to make it right in your situation, we will do that. We will never take
advantage of you. We will never charge you for something that you don't need. And if you feel like
you left high and dry, I'm more than happy to call and talk through anything. And I think that's
why we have so many great five-star reviews. I think, you know, it's sometimes you're in the
business where people, you know, leave reviews that they probably shouldn't or they were mad at the
moment and then went, well, I should probably have not said that, but they don't go back and fix it or
whatever. But, you know, that's something to be said about living in a small town. You're going to
see them at the market. You're going to see them, you know, walking around the square or town center.
So, you know, you got to make sure that you're taking care of people and you don't want to be that
guy that's, you know, taking off your hat or putting your head down when you're walking down the
corner. You want to be able to, okay, I can't stop at the store. I got my work clothes on. People are going
recognize me but you wanted to you know it's actually funny right before this i went to t j max and um blue
plumming just pulled up right next to me and i just shook his hand but you know people know me people
people people know people around here um so yeah i mean that's a that's a great it's valid point you
want to make sure you're in good standing that's why we love doing these podcasts because it's i don't
want your business to be just a listing on a google ad or you know when somebody googles who's paying
the most money for the top you know spot i would
want, you know, people to get to know these, you know, the people behind these businesses so that
when they call a guy, they already know the guy. So I appreciate, you know, you coming in and
it's not always easy to make time to come in for a podcast, but I think it's important for
our viewers and listeners to get to know, you know, the guys behind these businesses and
find somebody they can trust and it's important to us. So we appreciate you coming in.
Miracle Man Plumbing. And that phone number was 9-2.
wait, 830.
575.
And 24-7.
Yep.
You're going to answer the phone personally.
Not personally.
He's got a baby.
Come on.
Yep, I got a baby.
We have three trucks and we're looking to get a fourth year soon.
Oh, congratulations.
Yep.
I'll be more in an operations role here soon.
Okay.
No more going under the house.
I still will occasionally, just for the game.
Got to keep sharp.
Yeah, just got to keep sharp.
Caleb, thank you so much for coming in.
And guys, we will see you next time.
Thank you.
Bye.
