Hey, everybody. Welcome back to Signals News podcast. Today we have Tricia Fagelman, and you are, I want to say the brains, because I met your husband. He's pretty smart. So like double brains behind Scoop and Skidaddle?
Yeah. It was, it was his idea. So I will give them credit for that. He's the brains.
Yes. But I was the one that quit my job and like started it for the first year.
Okay. Brains and brains for sure. Yeah. So tell me a little bit about Scoop and Skidaddle, why you guys do it.
it is? Yeah, so we've been in business for six years now. It all started because we had a neighbor who
had broken his hip, and he was able to clean up after his dog poop. And so my husband offered to go
over and do it for him. And then the neighbor across the street was like, hey, can you guys come
do that while I'm on vacation? And then so Jordan was like, hey, babe, we should turn this into a business,
you know? And so we both worked 50-hour jobs that we hated. So I quit mine. And then he was like,
if we get to 50 clients, it'll be a real thing. And then I'll quit mine and we'll do it together.
And it took us a year and then we hit 50 clients.
And six years later, we got our three cars, two employees.
It's great.
I remember talking to your husband a couple years ago maybe.
And, you know, I was talking to him and I said, for real, I'm like, is this a real?
Like you pay your bills.
You know, you pay it.
And he was like, yeah.
And he has a plan.
Like in this many years, this is going to happen.
And I was like, but picking up dog poop, that's like one of the things you make your kids do or something.
And then you realize nobody wants to do it.
It's harmful when it backs up.
And, you know, when our kids were smaller, you're like, go pick up the dog poop
and realizing how unhealthy that is for the kids to be walking around, like picking them dog poop.
They're not being real.
And then as you get older, you're like, well, I don't, we don't have time.
Who's your average client?
Yeah.
So we get a big range of clients, but a lot of our clients are older people, you know.
Maybe they have a bad back where they can't bend over.
A lot of clients have rough terrains where they have like a hill where their dog poops and they just can't get to it.
So we do a lot of those.
We have a few blind clients.
Women that become pregnant that can't do it.
People that have their kids do it, but they're just not doing a very good job.
Or you have the husband and wife that are working 12 hour days and that's just the last thing they want to do.
Where you just love your dog and you hate their dog poop and, you know, you can pay for it.
So, yeah.
Work.
And then is it just dogs that you guys service?
So we do dogs and we do horses.
And we clean chicken coops too, actually.
So, yeah.
All the poop.
So we have a chicken coop and we've got this big tree that's,
my husband was pretty smart when he built the chicken coop.
But big tree, so he builds the chicken coop around this tree.
Yeah.
And that is the greenest tree on the planet because, you know,
it drops the leaves and so we let the leaves kind of sit there.
And then the chickens like scratch the leaves and then they do all their business.
and that tree has just grown.
Yes.
But cleaning out the chicken coop, and we only have five chickens, I hate it.
Yeah.
I hate cleaning out the chicken coop.
And that's where like we kept having clients ask us, we would clean their chicken coops.
And then we're finally like, okay.
And then we had so many people want it.
So then we just added it onto the service.
And what do you do for the, for horses?
So for horses, we will muck out the stalls, we'll muck out the arenas.
And then a lot of clients, when they go out of town, we'll take over like full time and feed them, you know.
And for horses, everyone has a little bit more personalized care what they want.
So we just come in and we do a whole day with them.
And then however they want it done, we just do it just like them.
Tricia, how did this happen?
Like you guys just, you know, I mean, I know it went from helping out the neighbor.
But what a business you guys have created that, you know, and like I said, I remember telling your husband.
And he's like, yeah, we've got, you know, a couple cars now.
And how many you have three now?
We have three now.
I see them everywhere.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, we're up to like 330 clients.
So it's just been amazing.
Yeah.
That's crazy.
That is so exciting.
It's literally the American dream of just, okay, not as if like, oh, we all want to go scoop poop.
But the dream of like, there's no excuse.
If you can, you know, if you want to get rid of your 9 to 5 or in your case, probably the 6 to 5 or whatever it was, and then be able to go and, you know, just let's start this business.
And if we work really hard, we might be able to get to.
50 clients and now, you know, 350 clients.
And are you just servicing like the Quad Cities or where do you guys?
Yeah, just the Quad City.
So Prescott, Prescott Valley, Dewey, Mayor Williamson Valley, Mingus West.
Yeah.
So pretty much anything 40 minutes from Prescott Valley is where we're doing.
Oh, that's good.
When with, I mean, that makes sense.
It doesn't, it's probably not cost effective to go like to the Verdi to service me's
backyard.
Not yet.
Yeah.
And then talk about.
like astro-turfs, stuff like that.
Is that something you guys take care of as well, or at least service that type of?
Yeah, any type of landscape we can work with.
Astro-Turf or like pavers are really great because we have a sanitizing disinfectant spray that we use.
And so it kills the urine smell.
It kills all the bacteria from the waste.
So even if you just have a dog that has loose stools all the time and, you know, it doesn't matter what you do,
you just, there's going to be that smudge there.
That's really nice because it not only cleans it, but it cleans the bacteria from it.
because people don't realize, especially with kids going in and out, like you're tracking all
that bacteria of the waste back into your house. And unlike chicken poop, dog poop is not a fertilizer.
And it takes years and years and years to break down. So, I mean, we've had jobs where people,
they'll be like, I haven't cleaned up my dog poop in five years, you know, and it's still out there.
Yeah. It really doesn't break down.
Yeah, it just kind of turns different colors, but it's still there. Yeah. So, okay, the standard
service, that's usually, how often are people having this done? Yeah. So standard service,
is around once a week. We start off at biweekly cleans and then once a week, twice a week,
three times a week. And we have a lot of clients that use us every single day, just because they
have six or seven dogs and they have a small space. So, but yeah, we can customize it.
So you're like, okay, that's my four o'clock stop every single day. We hit that.
That's awesome. Yeah. So we come in on the same day each week. The time's not always the exact same
because we have about 80 clients a day. So it can kind of fluctuate. You know, some jobs might
take longer. Sometimes the client comes out and talks to the technician for a while. So, yeah.
I can see that happening.
But we always make sure we send on the way text messages like 30 minutes beforehand.
And then we send a completed message and we send a photo of the gate.
That way they know that their gate securely shut because a lot of our clients aren't home and their dogs are outside.
So that way they have that peace of mind and knowing that their dog's not going to get out once we leave.
And I would assume that you guys have to be dog people.
Yes.
Yes.
And everybody we hire, they do like a two week training with Jordan and they just have to love dogs because the dogs will jump on you and play with you.
And, you know, we're their people now.
Yeah.
And that's the thing, especially with their own.
owner's gone all day. Like we try to make it a point to where like we stay and we play with them
and we throw the ball for them and, you know, bring them treats if the owners allow it.
Oh, that's awesome. So you're part of the family. Exactly. Yeah. And that's, and it's nice because we love
dogs. We love being outside. So the poop is just, you know, it's just kind of there.
And I think, too, you know, we are an older population too. And it's like, well, you know,
mom wants to keep her dog or dad wants to keep her dog. But we just can't, you know, they can't clean up
after them anymore. So knowing that there's an option of, you know, we can help.
We can, you know, if we'd send somebody over so mom can keep her dog.
And what about, I was trying to think, I mean, I guess there's accidents in the house.
I mean, if somebody ever asked you to come in and, like, would you mind?
Every once in all, we'll help out, like, if it's already a client.
But for, like, a new one like that, we don't.
We would just recommend, like, a floor cleaner service.
Yeah.
And that's kind of the only time.
Yeah, just going into the house.
We try not to, yeah, I don't even have the equipment for that.
So I'm like, I can pick it up, but I don't have anything to clean your floors.
I'll help you one time.
No, we do.
If someone has like an unfinished basement, we've had those because then we can spray the sprayer sanitizer gun down there, where if like the dog was down there, those will do.
But if there's any type of flooring or anything, we're going to damage with water, then we just won't.
We won't take that on.
So I see scoop and scaddle.com.
So it's S-C-O-O-P-S-E-D-D-D-L-E.
So S-K-E-D-D-L-E.
I was going to say scoop.
Well, it is scoop and skaddle, but for the website.
to Scoopscodaddle.com.
Correct.
And then it looks like you can go right on and get a quote right away.
You can.
Yeah.
And then Jordan goes out and does the quotes usually?
Yes.
It's usually always Jordan.
He goes out, does the first time clean, meets the family, meets the dog.
Because we always like to make sure that the dog is.
Some people have friendly dogs, but they don't like strangers walking into their backyard.
So he always goes and meets them and make sure that that's a good fit.
And I learned that dogs, they're colorblind in a sense where they can see the blues and the
yellows. Was that on purpose or did you guys read that? It actually wasn't on purpose. No, we, um,
we based our uniforms off of when we graphic wrapped our cars. So when we started, um, we had this
bright red truck and we actually did neon colors thinking people will be able to see us in the yard better.
Um, and then when we, when we rebranded the business is to scoop and skedaddle, um, yeah,
we ended up going with sky blue. We wanted to just look clean and they're really nice. Everything sky blue now.
Um, we had the gal from P.B. Bark who does like, um,
dog boarding and dog sitting.
And she said that it's not an accident.
The dogs, you know, those are the colors that they can see really well.
And so I saw yours, I'm like, oh, that must be true.
I wasn't as smart as her now.
Well, hey, somebody else is doing all this stuff.
Yeah.
So if they want to get a hold of you and they go to your website, do you have a phone number
that people call or is it usually at the website?
Yeah, so the phone number is 928-308-9-621.
And then you'll always get me.
I'm the only one that answers the phone.
So, yeah.
And then I love your shirts and everybody comes out dressed nice and take care of your place.
The dogs get to love them.
And just thanks for, I always get my, thanks for doing what you do.
And I always say that.
But really, you make the place so much better.
You keep everybody able to hold on to their dogs or, you know, allow them to just enjoy their dogs and not have to worry about the yucky part of it.
Well, and we like to look at it like we're giving people back their time because, you know, people don't realize how much time they spend outside doing that.
just like that task that just nobody wants to do.
Well, and how many times do you hear dad go, well, forget it?
You know, we'll just get rid of the dog then.
You guys are supposed to be taking care of the dog.
And mom's like, well, we're not getting rid of the dog.
We're just going to call Trisha and they'll come out and take care of it for us.
And some of the seniors, that's like all they have.
And their animals are like their kids.
And so it's really sad if they can't keep them.
Yeah.
Well, this is awesome.
Appreciate that you guys do this.
Give them a call.
Check out scoopscaddle.com.
