Dewey Brown welcomes the Yavapai County Ranch Rodeo and Match Brank riding to the Frontier Days
Rodeo grounds. Sanctioned by the Working Ranch Cowboys Association, WRCA, the event is not your typical
rodeo. The husband and wife team, Logan and Josie Anderson, started the nonprofit company
J and L productions in Arizona eight years ago to support their rodeos. The Andersons tell us,
it's a celebration of the authentic working cowboy in the daily life of real ranches across the
American West. Unlike traditional rodeos that feature individual timed or rough stock events,
WRCA sanctioned rodeos are team-based competitions that highlight real-world ranching skills.
The events will be held August 15th to 17th, 2025, at the Prescott Rodeo grounds.
The Yavapai County Youth Ranch Rodeo begins for,
Friday, August 15th at 6 p.m. with events that include participants 16 years of age and under and
feature. Branding, heel and drag one calf to the fire. Best time wins. Team doctoring, head and heel a steer,
mark the forehead. Best time wins. Team sorting. Pick out three steers from the herd and numerical order.
Fastest time wins. Trailer loading. Sort out a steer. Get him and your horses in the trailer. Team in the
truck. Best time wins. Steer race. Mount a
steer, ride him across the line, best time wins. An additional special event, match Brank
riding, will be held with the youth rodeo. For this event, a selected rider competes against a
specific bucking horse. The goal is for the rider to stay on the horse for eight seconds while
obeying specific rules and demonstrating good form. For the adult events, teams are made up of
full-time working cowboys who represent their ranches and compete in events that reflect the
day-to-day tasks of cattle operations. WRCA round one competition begins
Saturday August 16th at 6 p.m. and round 2 competition will be held Sunday August 17th at 11 a.m.
For all events, the contestants use traditional stock saddles in which the stirrups don't move.
Events include,
Bronk riding, ride a wild bronc in your everyday ranch saddle for eight seconds.
Team sorting, pick out five steers from the herd and numerical order.
Fastest time wins.
Wild cow milking, catch the cow and get milk in a bottle, then run to the judge's circle.
Team branding, a timed event where teams of cowboys compete to brand calves.
Stray gathering, rope and tie two steers, fastest time wins.
The WRCA Ranch Rodeo isn't just about competition, it's about preserving the ranching heritage,
supporting rural communities, and honoring the working cowboy way of life.
