A surge of cold air moving across the southwest is expected to drive temperatures sharply downward in southern Arizona,
prompting the National Weather Service to issue a freeze warning for early Friday morning.
The alert comes as forecasters anticipate a rapid drop in temperatures that could reach the mid-20s in some communities.
The incoming cold front poses concerns for crops, outdoor plumbing and sensitive vegetation across the region.
Sub-freezing temperatures can harm produce, stress local agriculture and damage unprotected water lines.
The cold spell is part of a larger cooling trend moving through western states, adding urgency for residents in vulnerable areas to prepare.
Areas that will feel the cold.
The National Weather Service Office in Tucson has issued the warning for several valleys in low elevation zones throughout southern Arizona.
These include the Upper Santa Cruz and Alter Valley, the Upper San Pedro River Valley, eastern Cochise County below 5,000.
and feet in the Upper Gila River Valley. Communities such as Clifton, Benson, Sierra Vista,
Safford, Nogales, Wilcox and Douglas are expected to experience some of the lowest readings.
The freeze warning will remain in effect from 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. on Friday.
Forecasts call for temperatures between 24 degrees and 30 degrees. Residents are being urged to
take precautions to protect gardens, pets, plumbing and any equipment that could be affected by the cold.
steps residents should consider before the cold arrives. People living in the affected areas can
reduce risk by wrapping exposed pipes, covering or bringing in outdoor plants, and staying up to date
on weather alerts. Those who work outdoors or rely on agricultural operations should plan for
possible disruptions or delays until conditions improve. What the outlook shows for the holiday week
although the short-term forecast includes unusually cold mornings, the longer range outlook from the
Climate Prediction Center suggests that much of Arizona may see slightly warmer than average
temperatures during the period from November 25th through the 29th. Other Western states will
also continue to see winter weather advisories as the broader cold pattern moves east.
